- 1:53today's episode of the Lineup. This one is called Teacher's Pet. We take
- 2:02you now behind the scenes of a police headquarters in a great American city,
- 2:07or under the cold glaring lights. Will pass before us. The innocent,
- 2:12the vagrant, the thief, the murderer. This is the lineup. It's
- 2:46kind of funny to be on this side of the while at ten it pays
- 2:49off better. Frankie. Yeah, and we can sit here just routine.
- 2:54Frankie, you used to know most of the junkies in town. Maybe you
- 2:57can tip us. Show glad to help. I got a white and kid,
- 3:00you know, and there's nothing to worry about. Yeah, yeah,
- 3:04sure, Hey, I have your attention. Please you people out there on
- 3:07the other side of the screen in the audience room, man, I have
- 3:08your attention, please, thank you. My name is Corger, Sergeant Pete
- 3:13Coager. I'll explain the lineup to you. Each of the suspects you will
- 3:15see will be numbers. I'll call off a number their name in charge.
- 3:19If you have any questions or identification, please remember the number of sign of
- 3:22the prisoners. I call his name at the end of each line when I
- 3:24ask for questions or identifications, called out the number. If you're sure,
- 3:28are not too sure of the suspect, have him out The questions I asked
- 3:31these suspects are merely to get a natural tone of voice, but do not
- 3:34pay too much attention to their answers, as they often lie. All right,
- 3:38bring on the line. Keep it moving, boys, over here at
- 3:42the end of the stage. That's right. To step it up right over
- 3:45here to the end. I'll turn on of you and face the screen.
- 3:49That's it. Stand still, keep your hands at your sides when you answer
- 3:52my questions. Don't mumble. The people out there on the other side of
- 3:53the screen want to hear you, so talk all right. Number one,
- 3:58George Ashaw, are can see your weapons. Step right up there, George,
- 4:02that's it. Where do you live, George? I ain't got one
- 4:05stuck up George in the park, the park before that, same place.
- 4:10How long you've been in town, George? Three or four days? Where'd
- 4:13you come from? Oh? West, somewhere's west? Where George? Que
- 4:17Sam Quentin? One to ten? Armed robbery? Where'd you get the gun?
- 4:21George? Or gun? The gun you were carrying when the officers arrested
- 4:25you didn't have no gun. They found the seven sixty five Lugar automatic in
- 4:29your coat pocket. George, I did that's right? Where'd you get it?
- 4:32Didn't have no gun? Right now? All right, slide down,
- 4:34George. Number two Jeffrey cap Staff Vagrancy. Step right up there, Jeff,
- 4:42that's it. Keep those hands with you side. Sure the dad anything,
- 4:45he's back only I ain't no vega. Where do you live, Jeff,
- 4:49West Hollye Street, Sergeant? And where right out of the street John's
- 4:54fleabag? Oh, I don't know the right It's in the four hundred block
- 4:59on the north side of the street. But I ain't no vaguely, I
- 5:01just said, oh that sub ject. Oh, no, guy, I
- 5:05believe you're doing an honest day's work. And how to do another dollar?
- 5:10I say, what were you doing when the officers picked up Jeff? I
- 5:13was looking for work? What kind of work? Oh? Any kind of
- 5:15a good honest job. You don't make no difference to me, gee,
- 5:19deep sea diving, rain making, just any kind of jobs. You were
- 5:25picked up at one in the morning, Jeff, Oh boy, I was
- 5:28really trying that day, all right. Number three, Gentry DAWs and Narcotics.
- 5:33Step right up there, Gentry all right, face the screen I kept.
- 5:38I finally picked up for so far be a break that so as you've
- 5:44noticed it. Day oh, come in ben to dam fine, says Louis
- 6:05Silvano's den. Though that's right. They picked him up in a routine accident
- 6:10report ran his car into the window of Sables Market eleven forty three last night.
- 6:15Hi drunk, just did Doc Gorson's making a routine up topsy. Now
- 6:19it looks like simple cardiac figure. Boys went over the car. They found
- 6:25these statched away in the radiator cells, prescription stuff morphine heroin. By the
- 6:31time the pushers cut it, it'd be worth maybe fifty thousand dollars. And
- 6:35they tried to burn out the numbers. The lab was able to read them.
- 6:39Came from that Adlon pharmacy hold up two weeks ago. Well that's one
- 6:43week. Can write off the books. And that's an interesting sight. Two
- 6:47police department notables dealing with narcotics. Who's the shoving and who the junkie?
- 6:53A friend of yours, captain, never saw him before here you gimes leave
- 6:57me cold, gentlemen. A pleasant change I might have after two hours on
- 7:00the hot lights with the mortal remains of Louis Silvano and what was it do?
- 7:03Cardiac Vidia? Well, there was a little help from a twenty two
- 7:06slug. Ballistics is checking it now. How come it didn't turn it earlier?
- 7:11Solano leaded a haircut. Penetration point was behind the right ear, concealed
- 7:15by hair and the earlob and he flashed burned. No, but the angle
- 7:18says it was fired from inside the car. A muzzle could have been held
- 7:23right against his hand. Could he have done it himself? Dog? Not
- 7:25unless he had a third arm in the middle of his back. I know
- 7:28somebody did the people of this state a good turn. Still, Hamasad Ben
- 7:30your job to get him, okay, but it's a dirty trick to pull
- 7:33on the guy who didn't got anything for his breaker, all right, Savana
- 7:59slug? Yeah, here's the dope. It's a Winchester in a Western Semmer
- 8:07squire soft nose, twenty two short and hunted grain designed for environmut shooting.
- 8:13Yeah that fits. Can you tell us anything about the gun that fired it?
- 8:16Well, the rifling marks are cut sharp and clean. Some microscopic metal
- 8:20particles on it that indicate a new or only slightly used Burrow. The gun
- 8:26is probably new or only test fire, most likely target Crystal in anything else,
- 8:31what do you want me to do? Find the killer for you?
- 8:33You got it? Hell? Good monthy. You're gonna check gun registrations.
- 8:39Nothing else to do. I'll go back a couple of years. I'm can't
- 8:41talk about that needle in a haystack. Nothing else to do. We could
- 8:46have hit that sandwich machine. I'm stop. Yeah, I mus think a
- 8:50person that's got this report in a couple of minutes ago. Maybe it ties
- 8:52in with so I've seen clocked In a twelve or four, a woman by
- 8:56the name of Margaret Benson called and said her husband name of Harriet, the
- 8:58missing two days the night before last, Angley, that's night we picked up
- 9:01Savanah. Yeah, you have a pretty complete description. Fits Sylvana like a
- 9:05glove. I think you'd better see it. What do you think then?
- 9:07We better visit Margaret Benson. We can go right in here, sit down,
- 9:31won't you. That's all right? Miss Benson. You're detective. Yes,
- 9:35I'm Lieutenant Gothrie. This is Sergeant Corgan Corgar k r G I Sergeant
- 9:41Carger, thank you. I got into the habit of getting names correctly.
- 9:45One has to with so many pupils these days. You're a teacher, Missus
- 9:48Benson, Yes, art music at Tracy High School. I suppose you think
- 9:52I'm a bit foolish calling in about Harry. My husband is idea? Why
- 9:56should we think? Then? Well, I suppose I have my imagination run
- 10:01away with me. After all, he's not even ten hours late. But
- 10:05he did say he'd be back early this morning. Mister Benson was away,
- 10:09yes, on a business trip. He's a real estate booker resort properties.
- 10:13He went north somewhere to make an appraisal on a dude branch. He expected
- 10:16to be back this morning. It's the very latest. I see. His
- 10:20name is Harry, Yes, that's right. Does the name Louis Sylvano mean
- 10:24anything to you, Louis Sylvana? Yes, no, I believe so.
- 10:30Are you sure, Missus Benson? Yes, I'm certain. I've never heard
- 10:33it before. Why do you were, miss Benson? How long have you
- 10:37been married? Why? It'll be six months Friday. How long had you
- 10:41known Harry Benson before that? Oh, just a couple of weeks. Was
- 10:46what you might call a burrow in courtship. I met him while I was
- 10:50on a vacation, Lieutenant Guthrie, Yes, Miss Benson, my husband's dead,
- 10:58isn't me? Sure? We have some pictures with us? May I
- 11:01see them? Please be sure? Billie? Thank you, sir. Yes,
- 11:13I'm sorry, Lieutenant. Yes, my husband's real name wasn't Marry Benson,
- 11:20wasn't no? And that business of his real estate proper? He was
- 11:26a criminal, wasn't he? Yes? Was it? Did he meet with
- 11:31a violent day? He was shot? Missus Benson murdered. I see,
- 11:37I suppose there's something you want me to do, something official. We'd like
- 11:41to take a statement from your headquarters. No hurry, though, that's all
- 11:45right. I have no more classes today. I can go with you,
- 11:48if you'll excuse me moment while I get rid, of course, Miss Benson,
- 11:56sometimes this is a lousy job. Tomorrow night, The Ben Crosby Show
- 12:15returns from vacation, making the fall parade of stars back to CBS Radio just
- 12:18about complete. Thing's guest will be lovely Jane Wyman. Another big musical event
- 12:24of tomorrow evening will be the arrival of the Doris Day Show, moving in
- 12:26to occupy her new CBS Radio time. Remember arriving tomorrow night, the Bing
- 12:31Crosby Show and The Doras Day Show. Then Mano was hap. He ran
- 12:52into this Margaret Yates was it former married name. She was a widow and
- 12:58a respectable school teacher, her own home and a respectable neighborhood. Ind a
- 13:01perfect cover up. So he married her under the phony of Harry Benson.
- 13:05Swell guy, yep, but somebody murdered him. Ben, I remember,
- 13:09so I'll try to get him. Okay, what's wallaw? Say Ben,
- 13:24We've still got a job to do. You're gone through the gun registrations.
- 13:28Yeah, just finished. How'd you make a You've ever gone through those things?
- 13:31Looks like everybody in town owns a twenty two? How about the one
- 13:33we're after? I think I got, Oh, what's the dope? The
- 13:37Colt Woodsman Master Target, purchased two days ago from Saunder's gun shop. What
- 13:41makes you think it's the one we're after. It's registered in the name of
- 13:45Blanket Bence and be right with it in justice sight, No, Harry s
- 14:07try that rack second from the window. I got some new thirty eight and
- 14:11the police Positives office is special as you're a righter. Nice guns, Ben
- 14:18Saunders carries the best. Yeah, I bought my last one here must be
- 14:22eight years ago. Hasn't seen that long though, and sometimes it seems twice
- 14:24as long. Ah, I guess that'll yeah. As your real guns,
- 14:33all right, I guarantee seven nights group of fifty feet in any room on
- 14:37a turn. Not today's it. We're a job I knew you would be,
- 14:41and never come in here to buy anything. Just ask questions who you
- 14:43after this time? You sold a Colt Woodsman Master target two days ago.
- 14:46Remember, I don't forget my guns. I never believe you're after her though?
- 14:52After who that woman who bought it? Missus Benson, real nice lady,
- 14:56and she was the one who bought it. Well, you got it
- 14:58down your register occasions. I just told you why I waste my time?
- 15:01Asked anybody with her? She bought it along? What's the mat u saage
- 15:05and your death? I said nobody was with him. Did she say why
- 15:09she was buying it? Yep? Well what did she say? Yeah?
- 15:13I said she wanted to do some hunting. I didn't believe it. He
- 15:16why, No, she didn't know nothing about hunting or guns. I'd tried
- 15:18to talk drew another gun that was kind of heavy for a woman thirty six
- 15:22and a half hounds is too heavy and she wouldn't listen to me. Maybe
- 15:26she wanted to give it to somebody as a present. That's not what she
- 15:28said that she wanted it for a hunting. Did she live? Looks like
- 15:33it's on her I had think, what a rain? Sticky? Enough?
- 16:00Hit it again? You there? You looking for miss Benson. Yes,
- 16:07that's right, you won't find her dad. She ain't home last about an
- 16:11hour ago. Well where did she go? You know? I didn't get
- 16:14a chance to ask. Probably out of town to visit a daughter though.
- 16:18Anyway, stop a cab and had some lovees with her. Got a call
- 16:19him. Yeah, you think missus Benson was going to visit her daughter.
- 16:29Yes, Natalie's her name from her former marriage to mister Yates. That was
- 16:33pretty little thing she is nailing. Hasn't been too well past three or four
- 16:37months though, And Natalie lives out of town that she Oh no, no,
- 16:41she lives at home with her mother. Only seventeen, you know,
- 16:44goes to Tracy High. But she's out of town now. Yes, but
- 16:47about ten days now it's been in relative somewhere in the east. I understand.
- 16:51I imagine miss Benson's going to join her, you know, any idea
- 16:53of wearing the east? And now Miss Benson never did say she thinks she'd
- 16:57mentioned something like that to a good neighbor once in a while, wouldn't you.
- 17:00But she never did say, Oh, Captain All will send how to
- 17:03pick up on her? Ben wants us to come in. Okay, Well,
- 17:07thanks for your trouble. I'm sorry we bothered you. Oh bother.
- 17:10I don't know that I've been of any help to you, though. The
- 17:12principal of mine not to talk about my neighbors to strangers. Well, Ben,
- 17:33she's blown down, looks like it. There's a lot of traveling for
- 17:36a school teacher. Who the Lexington, Kentucky ten days ago. That was
- 17:40on the fifth book, two seats one of the name of Natalie Benson.
- 17:42Yeah, who's she? A daughter? She left her there then came back
- 17:48alone on the twelfth, that's to day Silvana was shot. Yeah, who's
- 17:52coming the airport? Twine? Do you think she'll try for Lexington? I'm
- 17:56pretty sure the daughter the best part of her. What do you think,
- 18:00Ben? Well? There are two federal hospitals where narcotic addicts, ones at
- 18:06Fort Worth, the others at Lexington. You want to relieve clan. He
- 18:11gave me the job. Well that's Jake Keeth and I and Marvin Winters reports
- 18:32the reservation de ja yeah, yeah, right over there filling out one of
- 18:37those insurance farms on the machine. So yeah, yeah, that's right.
- 18:41Came in about five minutes ago. It's cleared to ticket through the Lexington,
- 18:45Kentucky in the name of Margaret Yates. Quite two or one slowing out gate
- 18:48the departure times in six months. That gives us plenty of time. I'll
- 18:52report you and then okay, plan, she's almost through. All right,
- 18:57let's go you all one for Saint Louis, Nordelle, Sharleston and Washington.
- 19:03Now loading head Kathy, Oh god, plea, Miss Benson. Why it's
- 19:11Lieutenant Guthrie and Sergeant carg You see I did remember your name, sergeant.
- 19:17That's right, missus Benson. How nice to see you again. Are you
- 19:18down here to meet someone? Not exactly. I'm leaving myself for Lexington,
- 19:23going down to visit my daughter there. Yes, sir, we know.
- 19:26Oh I don't remember telling you about I'm sorry, Miss Benson. We can't
- 19:33let you go on that plane. You can't. Why not. I think
- 19:37we better talk about it down that headquarters. Oh, we's leaving in a
- 19:40few minutes. My daughter's expecting me in the morning. I'm sorry. Is
- 19:44it about my husband's day? That's right, but I told you all I
- 19:48knew about that before, and my plane's leaving in a minute. I can't
- 19:52possibly disappoint my daughter. It's no good, missus Benson. We know about
- 19:56the gun. Do you mind if we go out to the concourse entrance for
- 20:02few in its? That'll be okay, thank you? Huh. I'm forty
- 20:19five years of age, Lieutenant. My pupils think of me as an old
- 20:23lady, but I don't feel old. Strange is me that a woman of
- 20:29forty five can have the same emotions desires as a girl of twenty. Needs
- 20:37to be loved, wanted, Yes, ma'am, I had all at once
- 20:44with Natalie's father. I thought after he died that I'd never wanted again.
- 20:49I was wrong. Not enough for a woman to have just a job as
- 20:53a child wasn't enough for me. It's the final call of black for all
- 21:00one. But maybe I asked too much, and I don't know when I
- 21:07met him, final call that man, I knew was Harry Benson. God
- 21:12forgive me. I didn't know what would happened to Natalie. I didn't know
- 21:22Miss Benson. Is she in the Federal hospital at Lexington. She's there.
- 21:29I took her there myself. She was a lovely child. I took her
- 21:36to that hospital myself for narcotic addicts and left her there. The day I
- 21:45came back here, I bought that gun and killed him. She was a
- 21:51lovely child, Mally, I'm sure she was. Day I came back,
- 21:57I killed him. Talking to man do a thing like that, sell drugs
- 22:04to children, turn them into what Natalie turned into. Have you ever seen
- 22:11what it does to the lieutenant. I've seen them. I saw it in
- 22:15my own home. Saw my own daughter fly at me like a wild animal.
- 22:23When I found then she was using, she clawed at me, shrieked
- 22:30like a wild animal. That's when I learned what he was doing. My
- 22:37husband selling drugs to the children at Tracy High School, to my own daughter.
- 22:49I don't remember actually planning to kill him. Natalie, it was a
- 23:02lovely child, that's plain. I was going to take it, the one
- 23:15for Lexington, Yes, that's him. I'd hoped I could take it to
- 23:22be with her for a little while to help her. You've both been very
- 23:30kind. I'm ready to go now. M The line up, starring Bill
- 24:00Johnstone as Lieutenant Ben Guthrie with Jack Moyles a Sergeant Pete Carter, was written
- 24:04by Sidney Marshall with music by Eddie Dunsteedder. Featured in tonight's cast were Herb
- 24:10Butterfield, Raymond Burr, Howard mcneer, Benny Rubin, high ever Back,
- 24:14Ted Bliss, Jeanette Nolan, and Virginia Gregg. The line up is produced
- 24:17and directed by Himde del Vayer. If you like your ladies youthful, full

- 24:47these same stations, presented by CBS Radio, Dan Coverly speaking this the CBS
- 25:00Radio that word welcome back. Wow. This one was a very moving episode.
- 26:03Rarely is it that the lineup gives us a sympathetic killer or even a
- 26:11sympathetic criminal. Draw It tended to do that more. But really, the
- 26:18criminals in the lineup mostly are kind of pathetic. This one really that I
- 26:25thought the final scene in this was just very moving, very well done,
- 26:30and you can understand why she did it, and you can kind of agree
- 26:36with Pete Carker that this is one of those times the job stank. I
- 26:41should mention that there was one lost episode here. We cannot find the Poker
- 26:47Party killings that were broadcast on October the first of nineteen fifty two. This
- 26:53episode was from October eighth. I thought I had it, but when I
- 26:57listened to it it was a pre episodes. So if we find it,
- 27:03will play it for you. But yeah, we had to skip it this
- 27:07time. But that's I think the only lost episode during this stretch. All
- 27:12right, Well, that will do it for today. Join us on Sunday
- 27:17we'll have a video theater special. This one's an episode of the nineteen sixties
- 27:21TV show Checkmate. It's one of only three of the episodes of that series
- 27:26to enter the public domain, and I've seen two of them, and this
- 27:30one's the better one. And then join us back here on Monday for yours
