- 0:00Vox Liturgica: The propers of the day according to the Roman Missal before 1955. A votive mass for the dead, June 1 in the year of our Lord 2026. In the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Ghost. Amen. A note on the rubrics.
- 0:34In 1954, Pope Pius the twelfth promulgated the feast of the queenship of the blessed Virgin Mary for May 31 as a second class duplex. The feast of Saint Angela Marici, previously on May 31, was moved to June 1. If a second or first class feast were impeded by a higher ranking Sunday, such as the feast of the most holy trinity, the feast was moved to the next available day, which in this case would be Monday, June 1. However, for today, we present the mass that would be set on this day before the promulgation of the feast of the queenship of Our Lady. Before the promulgation of the nineteen sixty rubrics, on the first day of every month outside of Advent, Lent, and Eastertide, and not impeded by a double or semi double feast, a votive mass of deceased brethren, relations, and benefactors was to be said.
- 1:43Furthermore, on any Monday where there was no feast, it was encouraged that the mass be for the dead. Even if the mass of Monday was that of an impeded Sunday, a commemoration of all the faithful departed was to be said in the collects. In this way, the church further prayed for the souls of those in purgatory. The introit, eternal rest grant unto them, o Lord, and let perpetual light shine upon them. To you, we owe our hymn of praise, o God, in Zion.
- 2:28To you must vows be fulfilled in Jerusalem. Hear my prayer. To you all flesh must come. Eternal rest grant unto them, O Lord, and let perpetual light shine upon them. The Collect, let us pray.
- 2:54O God, who forgives sins and desires to save mankind. We beseech your mercy to grant by the intercession of blessed Mary ever Virgin and that of all your saints that the souls of your servants and handmaids who have departed this life may enter upon the enjoyment of unending happiness through our Lord Jesus Christ, thy son, who liveth and reigneth with thee in the unity of the Holy Ghost, God, through all ages of ages. Amen. A commemoration for all the faithful departed. O God, the creator and redeemer of all the faithful, grant to the souls of thy servants and handmaidens the remission of all their sins that through pious supplications they may obtain that pardon which they have always desired, who liveth and reigneth with God the Father in the unity of the Holy Ghost, God, through all ages of ages.
- 4:14Amen. A lesson from the apocalypse of Saint John. In those days, I heard a voice from heaven say, write thus, blessed are the dead who die in the Lord. Yes, forever henceforward, the spirit says, they are to have rest from their labors, but the deeds they did in life go with them now. The gradual, eternal rest give on to them, O Lord, and let perpetual light shine upon them.
- 4:57The just shall be in everlasting remembrance. He shall not fear the evil hearing. Absolve, O Lord, the souls of all the faithful departed from every bond of sin. And by the help of thy grace, may they be enabled to escape avenging judgment and enjoy the bliss of everlasting light. A continuation of the holy gospel according to John.
- 5:32At that time, Jesus said to the multitude of the Jews, I myself am the living bread that has come down from heaven. If anyone eats of this bread, he shall live forever. And now what is this bread which I am to give? It is my flesh given for the life of the world. Then the Jews fell to disputing with one another.
- 6:07How can this man give us his flesh to eat? Whereupon Jesus said to them, believe me when I tell you this, you can have no life in yourselves unless you eat the flesh of the son of man and drink his blood. The man who eats my flesh and drinks my blood enjoys eternal life and I will raise him up at the last day. The offertory. O Lord Jesus Christ, king of glory, deliver the souls of all the faithful departed from the pains of hell in the deep pit.
- 6:59Deliver them from the lion's mouth that hell engulf them not nor they fall into darkness but that Michael, the holy standard bearer, bring them into the holy light which you once promised to Abraham and his seed. We offer you, O Lord, sacrifices and prayers of praise. Accept them for those souls whom we this day commemorate. Grant them, O Lord, to pass from death to the life which you once promised to Abraham and his seed. The secret.
- 7:48Oh God, whose mercies are without number. Graciously receive our humble prayers and through these sacraments of our salvation, grant to the souls of all the faithful departed to whom thou gavest grace to acknowledge thee, the remission of all their sins. A commemoration for all the faithful departed. Look with mercy, we beseech you, O Lord, upon the sacrificial gifts we offer for the souls of your servants and handmaids, so that to those upon whom you conferred the merits of Christian faith, you will also grant its reward through our Lord Jesus Christ, thy son, who liveth and reigneth thee in the unity of the Holy Ghost, God, through all ages of ages. Amen.
- 8:50The preface of the dead. Just it is and day, everlasting God, in whom the hope of a blessed resurrection hath shown forth unto us, so that those who are saddened by the certain lot of dying may be consoled by the promise of a future deathless life. For to thy faithful people, oh Lord, life is changed, not taken away. And when the home of this earthly sojourn is dissolved, an eternal dwelling place is being prepared in the heavens. And therefore, with angels and archangels, with thrones and dominions, and with all the hosts of the heavenly army, we sing the hymn of thy glory evermore saying, holy, holy, holy, Lord God of hosts.
- 10:05The heavens and the earth are full of thy glory. Hosanna in the highest. Blessed is he who comes in the name of the Lord. Hosanna in the highest. The communion.
- 10:28May eternal light shine upon them, O Lord, with thy saints forever for thou art gracious. Eternal rest give unto them, O Lord, and let perpetual light shine upon them with thy saints forevermore for thou art gracious. The post communion. Let us pray. Grant, we beseech thee, almighty and merciful God, that the souls of thy servants and handmaidens for whom we have offered thy majesty this sacrifice of praise may be freed by the power of this the eth for for with thee the in the unity of the Holy Ghost, God, through all ages of ages.
- 11:36Amen. A commemoration for all the will of the And deliver them from all sins and make them shares in thy redemption who liveth and reignest with God the father in the unity of the Holy Ghost. God through all ages of ages. Amen. In the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Ghost.
- 12:21Amen.
