- 0:06Speaker 1: All right, super special episode of Splash Hit. Today, we
- 0:09Speaker 1: have Baseball Royalty join us. Thirty two seasons as a
- 0:13Speaker 1: professional manager, twenty eight in the Big league's four World
- 0:16Speaker 1: Series champions three with the Giants, and six most wins
- 0:19Speaker 1: in Major League history, and the eleventh manager in Major
- 0:22Speaker 1: League history to earn two thousand wins. Bruce Bochie joins
- 0:26Speaker 1: the show today. Boach Man, thanks for coming on.
- 0:28Speaker 2: Of course. Of course, I'm just telling you earlier. There's
- 0:32Speaker 2: not a whole lot I can do here right now
- 0:33Speaker 2: in Nashville, got icy roads, it's below freezing, so we're
- 0:39Speaker 2: all staying indoors right now.
- 0:42Speaker 1: When are you heading the spring training?
- 0:44Speaker 2: I'm going to go with March, the first part of March.
- 0:47Speaker 2: I'll be there the whole month though, so looking forward
- 0:50Speaker 2: to it, looking forward to getting to know these players.
- 0:54Speaker 2: I've seen the younger players as well. I'll shoot over
- 0:57Speaker 2: to watch minor leaguers, to catch up with everybody. Of course,
- 1:03Speaker 2: the staff, you know, Tony and I we we've met
- 1:06Speaker 2: a couple of times. But yeah, it's gonna be, uh,
- 1:09Speaker 2: you know, the exciting time for me. I'm getting back
- 1:11Speaker 2: to Bay Area. I'm looking forward to it.
- 1:14Speaker 1: Yeah, that's My next question, welcome back. How does it
- 1:16Speaker 1: feel to be with the Giants again.
- 1:18Speaker 2: Oh? It feels great. You see me with the orange.
- 1:20Speaker 2: You know, I'm excited. Yeah, And you know what, I
- 1:23Speaker 2: didn't know if I was going to, you know, take
- 1:25Speaker 2: a year or two off, or if I, you know,
- 1:28Speaker 2: would do something like this. But talking to Buster, I
- 1:31Speaker 2: just you know, he had mentioned earlier, you know that
- 1:34Speaker 2: may I'm I'm a Giant, and I feel like that
- 1:37Speaker 2: that's that's my home. It's spent thirteen years there. So
- 1:41Speaker 2: I'm excited to you know, just stay in the game.
- 1:43Speaker 2: I'm in a good place right now.
- 1:45Speaker 1: Go.
- 1:45Speaker 2: I have to make a lot of those decisions that
- 1:48Speaker 2: managers have to make this time of year. But it's
- 1:51Speaker 2: gonna be uh, you know, exciting for you know, the
- 1:54Speaker 2: family too. They're looking forward to it. I have a
- 1:56Speaker 2: son that's a firefighter there. I'll get to see him
- 1:58Speaker 2: quite a bit. Well, that's cool.
- 2:00Speaker 1: We're also glad to have you back. Talk about Buster
- 2:03Speaker 1: a little bit, like what's your guys relationship, like now,
- 2:05Speaker 1: how's it evolved from a player to now president of
- 2:09Speaker 1: Baseball Operations And what do you think about the job
- 2:12Speaker 1: he's doing so far?
- 2:15Speaker 2: Yeah? Yeah, yeah, of course it's going to change from
- 2:18Speaker 2: manager to player to what it is now now he's
- 2:21Speaker 2: my boss. But I think more importantly, you know, we're
- 2:25Speaker 2: just probably closer friends now. You know, you always have
- 2:29Speaker 2: a little distance as a manager. That just comes natural.
- 2:34Speaker 2: I believe this is my second time though, that I've
- 2:37Speaker 2: had a player that ended up being my boss with
- 2:40Speaker 2: Chris Young they're in Texas and now with Buster. But no,
- 2:44Speaker 2: we've been texting, you know when he makes these moves.
- 2:47Speaker 2: I get excited about him. I just getting baiter out,
- 2:51Speaker 2: fire off a text, just keep up with everything. So no,
- 2:56Speaker 2: we and that was a big reason why I wanted
- 2:59Speaker 2: to come, because of Buster being there and being the president.
- 3:03Speaker 1: Yeah, I mean we talk about the organization right now.
- 3:06Speaker 1: Boach and a lot of Giants fans are watching this
- 3:09Speaker 1: and maybe they're not happy with all the signs this offseason,
- 3:12Speaker 1: but to me, it's more of a big pitcher thing.
- 3:14Speaker 2: We have the right people in the right place, you.
- 3:18Speaker 1: Dusty, Buster, guys that have won championships before, and maybe
- 3:22Speaker 1: you could just talk about the direction the organization is
- 3:24Speaker 1: heading and your feelings about that.
- 3:27Speaker 2: Yeah. Well, first of all, I think they have a
- 3:30Speaker 2: really good foundation. I mean, you look at the lineup,
- 3:33Speaker 2: I think it's a team that's going to put runs
- 3:35Speaker 2: on the board this year. You know, you don't have
- 3:38Speaker 2: Devors for a full year. You know, you had a
- 3:41Speaker 2: couple of guys, the three guys that could hit thirty
- 3:43Speaker 2: plus home runs in the lineup. It's I think it's
- 3:48Speaker 2: a fairly young lineup, you know, when you're looking at
- 3:51Speaker 2: you know, I don't know what Willie is probably thirty
- 3:54Speaker 2: years old, and Endeavors is around in that area. So
- 3:59Speaker 2: but anyway, I think they've added some important pieces to
- 4:04Speaker 2: the lineup, a guy like Bata. I know they wanted
- 4:06Speaker 2: to improve the defense. I've always been pitching centric. I've
- 4:09Speaker 2: always loved defense, especially in that ballpark. So I like
- 4:15Speaker 2: what they've done to the rotation. Uh, you know, as always,
- 4:18Speaker 2: it's just it's gonna be a key to keep that
- 4:20Speaker 2: rotation healthy because those guys that they're going to throw
- 4:23Speaker 2: out there, you start with Webb and Ray and of
- 4:27Speaker 2: course Maley, you know Adrian Hauser. Uh, you know, those
- 4:33Speaker 2: guys are going to give you a chance to win
- 4:34Speaker 2: when when they go out there, and the bullpen always
- 4:37Speaker 2: plays a huge part of your season. So we'll see
- 4:41Speaker 2: how that goes but they have good arms down there,
- 4:43Speaker 2: and uh so I think they're they're adding some nice pieces.
- 4:47Speaker 2: Uh and you know, some some good pieces of work with.
- 4:50Speaker 2: And as as always, you don't know how the year
- 4:54Speaker 2: is going to go. It takes the life of its own.
- 4:56Speaker 2: But you know, these guys do what you know we
- 4:59Speaker 2: expect them to do. You know, it's gonna be a
- 5:01Speaker 2: nice year. It's a tough division, no getting around it.
- 5:03Speaker 2: But so I can't tell you what's going to happen
- 5:07Speaker 2: from this point to spring or even until the season starts.
- 5:10Speaker 2: But I think they've added some nice pieces.
- 5:13Speaker 1: Let's talk about the bullpen a little bit, like there
- 5:15Speaker 1: was nobody better I don't think in the history of
- 5:17Speaker 1: the game of managing a bullpen, and when you talk
- 5:19Speaker 1: about how important that is in today's game, and maybe
- 5:22Speaker 1: what's going on with the giant situation. A lot of
- 5:25Speaker 1: times you see managers burn a bullpen out early in
- 5:27Speaker 1: the season. They got nothing left. In October, the guys
- 5:29Speaker 1: are all gassed, Like, what was your philosophy on how
- 5:32Speaker 1: to run a bullpen?
- 5:35Speaker 2: Yeah, and Tony asked me that question. That was one
- 5:38Speaker 2: of the questions he asked me when we get together
- 5:40Speaker 2: here in Nashville, and you know, I like to say
- 5:42Speaker 2: there's a secret sauce, but every year is different. You
- 5:45Speaker 2: got to adapt to the bullpen that you have. You
- 5:48Speaker 2: may have a frontline closer like a Hoffman or Wilson,
- 5:53Speaker 2: and then you know, we kind of piece it together
- 5:55Speaker 2: when we didn't have that one closer, cause see I
- 5:58Speaker 2: did probably the lying share of it, but we had
- 6:01Speaker 2: to adjust there with him. And so it's just, you know,
- 6:06Speaker 2: hopefully you get the arms that you can get the
- 6:08Speaker 2: matchups that you want, Guys that are I call them men,
- 6:13Speaker 2: and you know, guys that they're winners because they're coming
- 6:16Speaker 2: in with the game on the line, and so you
- 6:19Speaker 2: want the type of player that wants to be out
- 6:21Speaker 2: there then. And so I think this bullpen has some
- 6:24Speaker 2: really good arms. They got some nice lefties and rightings,
- 6:28Speaker 2: you know, to get the matchups that they want. Games
- 6:31Speaker 2: change a little bit with that three battered minimum, where
- 6:34Speaker 2: I had Romo and Lopez and I you know, i'd
- 6:37Speaker 2: move those two around quite a bit. But so now
- 6:41Speaker 2: they have some good arms and you're getting Folly who
- 6:44Speaker 2: has a really nice arm. Hopefully he'll be back I
- 6:48Speaker 2: think in May, so he'll make that bullpen even better.
- 6:52Speaker 1: Bach was just in fantasy camp in Scottsdale and Jeremy
- 6:55Speaker 1: I felt had a team. He was one of the coaches.
- 6:56Speaker 1: So there was a lot of boat stories.
- 6:58Speaker 2: Going on in the coach his room.
- 7:01Speaker 1: I mean, he was telling me about how influential you
- 7:03Speaker 1: were on his career.
- 7:05Speaker 2: Yeah, he was a lot of fun. He's he's a
- 7:08Speaker 2: lot of fun to get on, to have some fun with,
- 7:12Speaker 2: and he takes it well. But he was so valuable
- 7:15Speaker 2: in that bullpen. You need a guy like that, a
- 7:18Speaker 2: guy who can go multiple innings face left. He's some
- 7:20Speaker 2: rioting's who's resilient. Uh. You know, I didn't give him
- 7:25Speaker 2: a lot of days off. He could handle it. Had
- 7:28Speaker 2: it had you know, his ups and downs, like all
- 7:31Speaker 2: bullpen guys, but he handled it well. And uh that's
- 7:34Speaker 2: the key to a team. That's the key to the player,
- 7:38Speaker 2: every individuals you're is being resilient. So, but he just
- 7:42Speaker 2: had a great way of about, you know, not making
- 7:46Speaker 2: baseball his his sense of significance. You know, he took
- 7:50Speaker 2: the game seriously, but he didn't take himself so seriously,
- 7:53Speaker 2: and he kept everybody loose down there, and a lot
- 7:56Speaker 2: of fun, a lot of and I still you know,
- 7:59Speaker 2: we still take all the time. We stay close. Fact,
- 8:02Speaker 2: I must see him here a couple of weeks here
- 8:04Speaker 2: at this Safari Club.
- 8:07Speaker 1: Yeah, that relationship you have with all your players, I
- 8:09Speaker 1: mean you talk about when you win a world championship
- 8:12Speaker 1: that just brings everybody so close together, and you guys have.
- 8:15Speaker 2: A bond for life.
- 8:15Speaker 1: I'm sure you stay in touch with a lot of
- 8:17Speaker 1: your players.
- 8:18Speaker 2: Yeah, yeah you do. I mean's face it, I mean
- 8:24Speaker 2: you've been there. You're together for one hundred and sixty
- 8:26Speaker 2: two all count spring training, over two hundred games. You
- 8:29Speaker 2: do become like a family, probably, you know, as years ago.
- 8:33Speaker 2: Not I should keep in touch a little bit more.
- 8:36Speaker 2: But you know, we have some group techs with all
- 8:38Speaker 2: the teams I've been with, so I try to keep
- 8:41Speaker 2: track of everybody, and I look forward to the reunions
- 8:45Speaker 2: things like that. And like I said, I'm looking forward
- 8:48Speaker 2: to just getting back to bear A and seeing a
- 8:50Speaker 2: lot of these guys. I talked to Wodas a couple
- 8:52Speaker 2: of days ago, just touch base with him, and you know,
- 8:56Speaker 2: these guys meant so much to me, Righetti, Wotas, Flannery,
- 9:00Speaker 2: and but we do keep in touch.
- 9:03Speaker 1: You talk about all the teams you managed, and you
- 9:05Speaker 1: mentioned Trevor Hoffman, and I played against you guys in
- 9:07Speaker 1: nineteen ninety eight and I know you've won four World Series,
- 9:11Speaker 1: but that had to be one of the most talented
- 9:13Speaker 1: teams you ever managed. I mean there were superstars everywhere
- 9:16Speaker 1: on that San Diego Padres nineteen ninety eighteen.
- 9:20Speaker 2: Yeah, it really was. You know, it's probably one of
- 9:23Speaker 2: my biggest disappointments that we didn't win the World Series
- 9:26Speaker 2: because we were talented. I remember going to spring training
- 9:30Speaker 2: and thinking, this team's going to do something special. I
- 9:34Speaker 2: mean we, as I said, we had men all around
- 9:37Speaker 2: that field. Came an Eddie vond and Walie Joiner, I mean,
- 9:43Speaker 2: Tony Gwynn. These guys were a close knit group too,
- 9:47Speaker 2: and we got to the World Series. Of course we
- 9:50Speaker 2: ran in a juggernaut Yankees. You know, that's that's the
- 9:53Speaker 2: year they had that incredible season, and but it was
- 9:57Speaker 2: a special year in that group. The group texts and
- 10:00Speaker 2: they all stay close together, and it just shows you
- 10:04Speaker 2: how important you know the culture of the chemistry that
- 10:07Speaker 2: you create, what the team is and you see why
- 10:11Speaker 2: you know that team won or our giant teams, they
- 10:14Speaker 2: were very close knit group.
- 10:17Speaker 1: What would Bruce Bochie after twenty eight seasons and all
- 10:22Speaker 1: your accomplishments, and tell a young Bruce Bochi, excuse me,
- 10:26Speaker 1: tell a young Bruce Bochie maybe in nineteen ninety five,
- 10:29Speaker 1: when you first started managing, with all your experience, what
- 10:31Speaker 1: would you tell the rookie manager in nineteen ninety five, Well, ninety.
- 10:36Speaker 2: Five, I'll tell you what I want. I told myself
- 10:39Speaker 2: is to delegate a little bit more. When I first
- 10:42Speaker 2: started in ninety five, I did everything. I ran the meetings,
- 10:47Speaker 2: you know, talk about how we were going to pitch
- 10:49Speaker 2: the hitters, where we were going to play them. And
- 10:52Speaker 2: then after a couple of years of that, I said,
- 10:54Speaker 2: well this is I'm not going to last long doing
- 10:57Speaker 2: everything here. And you know, if you're the smartest guy
- 11:01Speaker 2: in the room, then you're in the wrong room. Because
- 11:03Speaker 2: you know, these these staff, the staff that you hired
- 11:06Speaker 2: at pitching coaches and and uh base coaches. You know,
- 11:09Speaker 2: they all all have their expertise, and uh so I
- 11:12Speaker 2: would have told myself use those guys. I had Davey
- 11:15Speaker 2: Lopes for example, first base, you know, so I let
- 11:18Speaker 2: him run to the base run and hey, if you
- 11:21Speaker 2: think they can steal it, uh you got something on
- 11:23Speaker 2: these pitchers, send them so uh that's where it would
- 11:27Speaker 2: have started. Uh. After that, probably uh you know, maybe
- 11:31Speaker 2: be a little bit more patient, you know, And I
- 11:33Speaker 2: know I would show frustration to doug out and things,
- 11:36Speaker 2: and uh, you know, a couple of snaps you feel
- 11:39Speaker 2: bad about because a lot of people look at me
- 11:40Speaker 2: and they say, ah, you know, he just seems so calm,
- 11:43Speaker 2: but don't don't let that bly what's going on underneath?
- 11:46Speaker 2: And you know, kicking the buckets and they would have
- 11:49Speaker 2: some last one time I put that stuck in the bucket,
- 11:51Speaker 2: and you know, it's just it's just uh, you know,
- 11:55Speaker 2: it's just something that I probably would have told myself,
- 11:57Speaker 2: which I think that's why I you know, the way
- 12:01Speaker 2: I end up managing the last three four or five
- 12:03Speaker 2: years was just being a little bit more more patient
- 12:05Speaker 2: and realized how hard the game is.
- 12:09Speaker 1: Well, what's your impressions of Tony so far and what's
- 12:11Speaker 1: going to be his biggest challenge?
- 12:14Speaker 2: Yeah, No, he's very impressive. Man, He's gonna be fine.
- 12:19Speaker 2: He's got a great way about him. He's smart, he
- 12:21Speaker 2: understands baseball. You know, he's been doing this long time. Yeah,
- 12:25Speaker 2: you know, been you know, coaching, wearing different hats, and
- 12:29Speaker 2: so he has a great feel for the game. Obviously,
- 12:33Speaker 2: the biggest challenge is all the games that you're playing.
- 12:36Speaker 2: And I don't think he's ever lost sixty seventy games
- 12:41Speaker 2: in a season, so you know, you've got to deal
- 12:43Speaker 2: with that, you know. Of course, you know the workload
- 12:48Speaker 2: on the players college. You can run him out there
- 12:51Speaker 2: every game, but those guys are need the rest, particularly
- 12:56Speaker 2: the bullpen. You know that those guys that you got
- 12:59Speaker 2: to just keep an eye on. Well, he's got two
- 13:02Speaker 2: nice pitching coaches there that will help him. Of course, Tingler,
- 13:05Speaker 2: he's managed, he's going to bring that experience, and Washington
- 13:09Speaker 2: to be there to help him out, and of course
- 13:11Speaker 2: the Dusty and I were there to help. We're there
- 13:14Speaker 2: any anything he wants to ask or talk about. You know,
- 13:19Speaker 2: we're there for him and we want to help him succeed.
- 13:23Speaker 2: I want to see the Giants win another championship. That's
- 13:26Speaker 2: that's the biggest reason why I'm here.
- 13:29Speaker 1: That's awesome Giants fans. I love to hear that. Butach
- 13:31Speaker 1: I managed an a ball in San Jose and the
- 13:34Speaker 1: game was moving so.
- 13:35Speaker 2: Fast for me.
- 13:36Speaker 1: I'm coaching third base I'm putting on signs I got
- 13:38Speaker 1: to get a guy up in the bullpen. Is the
- 13:41Speaker 1: speed of all that and maybe the speed of the
- 13:42Speaker 1: major league game going to be a big challenge for
- 13:44Speaker 1: Tony or is it just baseball's Baseball's baseball?
- 13:48Speaker 2: You know what it could be? You know, again, not
- 13:51Speaker 2: ever coaching college, but I'm sure moves were made in
- 13:56Speaker 2: the college game too. But you know, the biggest thing
- 14:00Speaker 2: is just being prepared, don't be surprised, and so that's
- 14:05Speaker 2: what you have to tell yourself, and you do that
- 14:07Speaker 2: before the game, so you know you're you're ready for
- 14:10Speaker 2: any anything that comes up. And that's uh, you know,
- 14:15Speaker 2: that's where a guy like Tingler is going to help
- 14:18Speaker 2: out too. H even the pitching coach. Uh, you know,
- 14:21Speaker 2: I started relying on coaches more too. Just give me
- 14:24Speaker 2: my options, you know. I you know, I did my
- 14:26Speaker 2: own thing, but I want to woe to say, Okay,
- 14:28Speaker 2: well I'm missing something here. This is what I'm going
- 14:31Speaker 2: to do. And Ronnie was great, Rags was great, and
- 14:34Speaker 2: so that's that that will be an important part of
- 14:37Speaker 2: the game.
- 14:38Speaker 1: So open lines of communication. You mentioned Tyler Mallee earlier
- 14:42Speaker 1: newest Giant pitcher one of the newest Giants pitcher.
- 14:44Speaker 2: You managed him.
- 14:45Speaker 1: What can you tell Giants fans about Tyler Malley.
- 14:47Speaker 2: Yeah, I love the guy, you know, I was. I
- 14:52Speaker 2: was behind this move. Leave me. He was so good
- 14:56Speaker 2: before we got hurt key up. We're got to keep
- 14:59Speaker 2: this guy. Hell the uh he's a really good competitor.
- 15:02Speaker 2: He's like a number one or two when he's on
- 15:04Speaker 2: the mound and he's healthy, throwing well, we had you know,
- 15:08Speaker 2: Valdi and de gram on that staff, and he was
- 15:11Speaker 2: thrown as well, not even a little better than them
- 15:14Speaker 2: before his injuries. So he's got he's a four pitch guy.
- 15:18Speaker 2: You know. He's hit that riding fastball. He's got great command,
- 15:22Speaker 2: he's got a nice split to work with, and he'll
- 15:24Speaker 2: mixing the breaking ball and good poy. He's uh just
- 15:29Speaker 2: sounds away, getting tougher with men on base, good teammates,
- 15:33Speaker 2: a lot of good qualities. Yeah, he's he's he made
- 15:37Speaker 2: this better staff when he when he joined us.
- 15:39Speaker 1: He said, riding fastball, that's awesome. That's old school. Everybody
- 15:43Speaker 1: says spin right right now. In the videos I've seen
- 15:45Speaker 1: of Tyler Mally, he's throwing like ninety one and ninety
- 15:48Speaker 1: two pass guys late in the county, elevates the fastball
- 15:51Speaker 1: and it looks like it's playing up to like ninety
- 15:53Speaker 1: seven ninety eight.
- 15:54Speaker 2: Yeah, it's actually right. And don't look at him, you know,
- 15:57Speaker 2: coming in throwing harder than that. You know he'll bump
- 16:00Speaker 2: ninety two ninety three. But you know that's he just
- 16:04Speaker 2: got you know, that good ride extension all that, It
- 16:08Speaker 2: just jumps on them. And uh, he'll use it too.
- 16:11Speaker 2: He's got a lot of confidence and uh, but the
- 16:13Speaker 2: biggest thing is this command. He can pitch on it.
- 16:16Speaker 2: I had all four quadrants as well as anybody.
- 16:19Speaker 1: All right, switching gears a little bit to the Hall
- 16:21Speaker 1: of Fame. What does that mean to you? Getting into
- 16:24Speaker 1: the Hall of Fame based on all the hard work
- 16:26Speaker 1: you put in, everything you've done in the game of
- 16:28Speaker 1: baseball for so many years.
- 16:30Speaker 2: Well, I'll start with I'm not into Hall of Fame. Uh.
- 16:34Speaker 2: Well you know that that.
- 16:35Speaker 1: That I meant getting into the Hall of Fame?
- 16:37Speaker 2: What what would that means? You would be a better
- 16:40Speaker 2: That's that decision will be made by people. But you
- 16:43Speaker 2: know what it's it's just hard to wrap my head
- 16:45Speaker 2: around that. You know, I just see the Hall of Fame,
- 16:48Speaker 2: you know, for the great players, you know, the benches
- 16:50Speaker 2: and and Willie Mays and those guys. Of course, I'm
- 16:54Speaker 2: not going in as a player, I get that. Uh,
- 16:56Speaker 2: as a manager, it's kind of it dis blows your
- 17:01Speaker 2: way when when that comes up. The question comes up
- 17:04Speaker 2: to me a lot, and uh it's it's just horror
- 17:08Speaker 2: for me again to you know, to think that that's
- 17:10Speaker 2: a pulse the possibility, because that's such a high pinnacle
- 17:16Speaker 2: that I never even thought about that when I started managing.
- 17:21Speaker 2: When I started managing minor leagues, I didn't know if
- 17:22Speaker 2: I was going to manage in the major leagues. And
- 17:24Speaker 2: now you know, this talk, this Hall of Fame talk
- 17:27Speaker 2: has been coming up in the last couple of years,
- 17:29Speaker 2: and uh so it is. It's it's very humbling, and
- 17:33Speaker 2: we'll see what happens.
- 17:34Speaker 1: From Spokane to the Hall of Fame. That'd be pretty cool.
- 17:37Speaker 1: I saw your first year you were like, I don't know,
- 17:40Speaker 1: ten or fifteen games over in Able. What was that
- 17:42Speaker 1: like going from I mean I did a too quick boach.
- 17:44Speaker 1: I jumped out, retired and then got right into coaching.
- 17:47Speaker 1: And I wasn't ready for that transition. I was still
- 17:50Speaker 1: taking in deal with the guys jumping into groups at
- 17:52Speaker 1: batting practice. What was that transition like for you?
- 17:55Speaker 2: I loved it. I absolutely loved it. And if I
- 17:59Speaker 2: if I was to the minor leagues manager, I would
- 18:02Speaker 2: have been fine. Spokane especially was a great way for
- 18:08Speaker 2: me to start because of these young kids coming in
- 18:11Speaker 2: and you have to deal with so many different things
- 18:13Speaker 2: in the minor leagues, as you probably found out, you know,
- 18:16Speaker 2: anything from you know, family issues, homesick things like that.
- 18:22Speaker 2: So it just teaches you how to deal with the
- 18:25Speaker 2: different personalities, you know what, learned how what makes guys tick.
- 18:30Speaker 2: You got to look under the hood at all these
- 18:32Speaker 2: players and see how you have to adapt to coaching them.
- 18:37Speaker 2: So it was just a great experience for me. I
- 18:40Speaker 2: loved it. Now you brought up the you know, coaching
- 18:44Speaker 2: the minor leagues, you brought up some good things too.
- 18:47Speaker 2: You did everything in the minor leagues. You coach third,
- 18:50Speaker 2: you had to make the moves, you had to think
- 18:51Speaker 2: about the pitching, you had to you know, keep make
- 18:54Speaker 2: sure the lineup card was straight in the dugout and all.
- 18:57Speaker 2: And and that really helped her pair of me for
- 19:00Speaker 2: managing them in the major leagues. Actually it was easier
- 19:04Speaker 2: to major leagues when once I was up there as
- 19:06Speaker 2: far as the game, because you know, you you don't
- 19:09Speaker 2: get a chance to drift mentally as a minor league
- 19:12Speaker 2: manager because you get so many different things you got
- 19:15Speaker 2: to do, and you might be out in that third
- 19:17Speaker 2: base coaching box and so you're trying to communicate your
- 19:20Speaker 2: pitching coach whatever. But yeah, that's you know, just a
- 19:25Speaker 2: special time my years in the minor leagues. Yeah.
- 19:28Speaker 1: Yeah, who broke the lamp in the hotel room. You
- 19:30Speaker 1: don't have to worry about in the big leagues.
- 19:33Speaker 2: Stuff like that.
- 19:34Speaker 1: Felipe gave me some great advice. He was managing the
- 19:36Speaker 1: Giants at the time, and he said, Frankie, make sure
- 19:39Speaker 1: that your players get there before you. The biggest mistake
- 19:42Speaker 1: minor league coaches make is they want to climb that
- 19:44Speaker 1: ladder and get to the big leagues as coaches and
- 19:47Speaker 1: and and they they lose focus. And he said, make
- 19:51Speaker 1: sure your guys get there before you. And when you
- 19:53Speaker 1: walk into that major league clubhouse someday, obviously I transition
- 19:56Speaker 1: to broadcasting, all those guys will be thankful that you
- 19:59Speaker 1: helped them get to the big leagues.
- 20:01Speaker 2: Yeah, I'd love for Lebay. First of all, I got
- 20:04Speaker 2: to start there. You're talking about Hall of Fame. I
- 20:06Speaker 2: think this guy should go into Hall of Fame with
- 20:09Speaker 2: what he did as a player. What he did is
- 20:10Speaker 2: a manager, broke barriers for the Latin players coming from
- 20:14Speaker 2: the Dominican. But yeah, we're very close, and he was
- 20:19Speaker 2: kind of he was like a mentor to me. I
- 20:22Speaker 2: would pick his brain, you know him, He's got that
- 20:24Speaker 2: great wisdom, these great sayings, and in fact, in San Francisco,
- 20:29Speaker 2: he's in my office all the time. In spring training,
- 20:32Speaker 2: he was there every day. And still keep in touch
- 20:34Speaker 2: with him. But yeah, the special Man.
- 20:38Speaker 1: Yeah, I would be talking to you if it wasn't
- 20:40Speaker 1: for him. He was a guy that called me up
- 20:41Speaker 1: to the big leagues and he's one of the biggest
- 20:43Speaker 1: influences of my life. I'm sure there's a lot of
- 20:45Speaker 1: players that feel the same about you. Okay, we'll end
- 20:47Speaker 1: on this one A fun one. Your six all time
- 20:51Speaker 1: in managerial ejections with eighty nine. Tony's Italian. He's kind
- 20:55Speaker 1: of fiery, like we both get that, right, you give it? Tony,
- 20:58Speaker 1: any advice about how he answer umpires, I don't. I
- 21:01Speaker 1: don't think there's a lot of ways to get ejected now,
- 21:03Speaker 1: especially with the ABS coming next year. But like you know,
- 21:06Speaker 1: you talked about kicking buckets in the dugout. You were
- 21:09Speaker 1: pretty famous for snapping on umpires.
- 21:13Speaker 2: Yeah, you're right, though, great point. It's gonna be hard
- 21:16Speaker 2: for anybody to get thrown well, Bobby Coxon never get approached.
- 21:21Speaker 2: But even you know, if you get eighty nine, I mean,
- 21:25Speaker 2: that's I mean, it's not crazy, but that's a lot.
- 21:28Speaker 2: I don't see that happening now. I mean, we're there's
- 21:32Speaker 2: no argument anywhere because you can replay everything. You know,
- 21:35Speaker 2: the ABS, that's that's going to change. That was your
- 21:38Speaker 2: last chance get thrown out on pitches and if you
- 21:42Speaker 2: use them up with shame on you. That's your fault.
- 21:44Speaker 2: And and so I don't see guys getting thrown out
- 21:48Speaker 2: anymore now, you know, occasionally you have, they'll do it,
- 21:51Speaker 2: replay and they'll reverse it, and the manager, you know,
- 21:54Speaker 2: still go out there and argue, which I never never did.
- 21:57Speaker 2: That never understood it. I did want to. And I
- 22:00Speaker 2: take that back. Jonah Hine. They got they got him
- 22:03Speaker 2: for blocking the plate against the White Sox. He wasn't
- 22:06Speaker 2: even in front of the home plate. They overruled. You know,
- 22:10Speaker 2: the blocking the plate deal, but yeah, that's that's pretty
- 22:13Speaker 2: much gone. So you know the Billy Martin's and Losorda's
- 22:17Speaker 2: and you know those Panela was the best, but those
- 22:21Speaker 2: those acts, you know, I think baseball will miss.
- 22:24Speaker 1: Yeah, we're sterilizing the game a lot right now. All right, Bach,
- 22:27Speaker 1: I'll let you go. Man, Thank you so much for
- 22:29Speaker 1: coming on. I really really appreciate the podcast is new,
- 22:31Speaker 1: it's just starting out. A lot of Giants fans are
- 22:33Speaker 1: paying attention. We're all so happy that you're back in
- 22:36Speaker 1: the Orange and Black, and I know you're such a
- 22:38Speaker 1: valuable resource to Tony and the whole organization. I look
- 22:41Speaker 1: forward to seeing in Scottsdale, Boach.
- 22:43Speaker 2: Hey, back at you. I look forward to it. See
- 22:45Speaker 2: you soon.
