- 0:18I'm Jessica and this is Tiba K Rambles, where a couple of
- 0:21friends review Korean dramas and welcome back to another episode.
- 0:25We are going to review our Blues today and for this episode I am
- 0:29joined by Curtis from Infatuation Podcast.
- 0:33Hey, Curtis, how are you? Hey, Jess, how's it going?
- 0:36It's going well. Welcome back.
- 0:38Welcome. Back, yeah.
- 0:41And I also have Brandon from the Poacher Playlist podcast.
- 0:45How are you, Brandon? I'm doing well, thank you for
- 0:48the invitation. It's my first time on here.
- 0:50You did an episode with Jenny from Poach a Playlist a few
- 0:53episodes back, maybe one or two years ago.
- 0:56I think that was on Goblin, right?
- 0:57Yeah, we did Goblin and then she came back and we did your
- 1:00beautiful that throwback and that was a lot of fun.
- 1:04So I am so glad that you were keen to join for Our Blues
- 1:08because I'm told that you really love Our Blues.
- 1:11And the same goes for you, Curtis, that you are both fans
- 1:14of this show and could bring a lot to the table, maybe a lot of
- 1:18context. And just we're glad to talk
- 1:21through this show. And this was my first time
- 1:24watching this show. So I was like, I need people
- 1:26who, you know, have been kind of simmering in this already and
- 1:30I'm super excited to get to get going on this really quick.
- 1:35What are you guys watching recently and what are you guys
- 1:38enjoying in the Asian drama world?
- 1:41If if you guys don't mind just kind of sharing what's on your
- 1:45plate right now? Poach a playlist just finished
- 1:48reviewing Midnight romance in Haguan that has we ha Jun in his
- 1:52first leading role in a romance that was great and we are going
- 1:56to be wrapping up a typical family.
- 1:58That's a drama that me and my Co host Andy.
- 2:01We really like that drama for this year.
- 2:03I think we're going to rank it pretty well.
- 2:05Yeah, same. I I just finished an episode on
- 2:09a or an atypical family. I loved it as well and actually
- 2:15currently, for better or for worse, I am watching Miss Day
- 2:18and Nights. Miss day and nights.
- 2:21Some actors from yeah, from our Blues.
- 2:25There's a couple actors from our Blues in there, so yeah, I won't
- 2:28give any opinions on that one just yet.
- 2:30We got a couple more weeks on that one.
- 2:31OK yeah, I did a big poll the other day on my Instagram
- 2:36stories to see what people were feeling.
- 2:37We are just past the halfway mark in 2024.
- 2:41See what people are feeling about the best dramas of 2024.
- 2:44And overwhelmingly people were saying an atypical family was
- 2:49their favorite drama. Was the best drama of 2024,
- 2:52followed by Lovely No no lovely runner I think.
- 2:58Lovely runner, yeah. Yeah, those two were the top two
- 3:01of the year. Pocha Pocha approved that one.
- 3:05Yeah, I know, I know. So this is exciting.
- 3:09I can't wait to get going. But before we do, if this is

- 3:51Thank you so much for being patrons.
- 3:54OK, so we are going to get going on our Blues.
- 3:56This is actually going to be pretty difficult for us because
- 3:59there are so many people in this cast.
- 4:02There are so many storylines that we can talk about.
- 4:05We are going to do our best to talk about as many as we can
- 4:09within a reasonable time frame because we don't we're we don't,
- 4:12we're not made of time. So we're going to get.
- 4:15Comfortable people. Yeah, so here we go then.
- 4:19I put together this like Frankenstein of a Netflix slash
- 4:22Wikipedia synopsis and here it is really quick.
- 4:26Romance is sweet and bitter and life riddled with ups and downs
- 4:30in multiple stories about people who live and work on bustling
- 4:33Cheju Island. The series revolves around the
- 4:35sweet and bitter lives of people at the end, climax or beginning
- 4:39of life and depicts their stories in an omnibus format,
- 4:42which is basically telling stories of diverse characters
- 4:45that are somewhat interconnected in one way or the other.
- 4:48So Our Blues aired from April to June 2022.
- 4:54I kind of feel that this, especially in terms of the
- 4:56international K drama audience, this show was underrated, flew
- 5:02under the radar for everybody. I think people were still
- 5:05reeling from 2521, which had just finished airing in this
- 5:09same time slot. Then Our Blues started.
- 5:12People were still all about 2521 and about the end famous ending
- 5:17on that show. And then after Our Blues
- 5:20finished airing, it was preceded by Alchemy of Souls, which the
- 5:24international audience ate up with gusto.
- 5:28So. And coincidentally, both of
- 5:29those shows have episodes on the 10 box feed if you want to
- 5:32scroll back and listen to those. But I feel really badly about
- 5:36Our Blues, especially when it comes to its reception
- 5:40internationally, because I don't feel like I kind of got a chance
- 5:45to really get there, you know? It's 20 episodes long, so it's a
- 5:50little longer than I think people maybe nowadays,
- 5:53especially new arcade drama fans are used to, but that is
- 5:56traditional format, 20 episodes long, so it's nice to see.
- 5:59Directed by Kim Kitay, he's directed a long list of dramas,
- 6:05including A Love to Kill from O Five.
- 6:08That's with Shimina, Worlds Within, Iris with Eve, Young
- 6:13Gun. When I saw Iris on there, I was
- 6:14like, oh. Yeah, yeah.
- 6:17Iris Bro Padam Padam, which is with Hanjimin.
- 6:21All of these actors are in our Blues that winter.
- 6:26The wind blows with Choin Song and Song Akio.
- 6:29He won best director at the 49th Beck Song Awards on this drama.
- 6:34He directed It's all right, This is love from 2014, which is one
- 6:38of my favorite dramas. Super good drama.
- 6:41Secret love, moon lovers, scarlet heart Rio, which we
- 6:44covered at the end of last season, season 4 bed buck feed.
- 6:49If you want to go back and listen to that, he covered, he
- 6:51directed Liv and he will be directing The Trunk, which is a
- 6:57Netflix show airing sometime this year with Kong Yu as the
- 7:01star. So that's Kim Kyute, I think
- 7:03very, very decorated and well regarded director.
- 7:07He's been around for a minute or two and he's worked with some
- 7:11top talent. Do you guys like this director?
- 7:15Do you like his stuff? I haven't watched a ton of his
- 7:18stuff, to be honest. So yeah, just looking at this
- 7:21list, I don't think I've watched any of these all the way
- 7:24through. Oh, OK.
- 7:25Besides, besides our Blues, yeah.
- 7:28Unfortunately I can't say that I've seen any of these titles,
- 7:31but I do know that like Moon Lover, Scarlet Heart, that's
- 7:33super popular so that's always been on my list.
- 7:36I might have to check it out. OK, Godspeed.
- 7:39The show Our Blues was the show Our Blues was written by Noi
- 7:46Kyung. She's been writing dramas since
- 7:49the 90s, so this is just a few of the dramas that she's
- 7:52written. Her beautiful story from O 4
- 7:56this stars Koh Duchim. She's one of the one of the
- 8:00actresses in our Blues world's within Padam Padam that one of
- 8:04the wind blows. It's all right.
- 8:04This is this is love. Four of the same dramas that the
- 8:09director has directed. So she's worked with the
- 8:11director basically five times before our Blues.
- 8:16And then Dear My friends from 2016, she wrote with Kim Hee JA,
- 8:22which is the terminal mom in our Blues.
- 8:26This show won best screenplay at the 53rd Bexhung Awards.
- 8:30So really, really decorated and and you know, she's been around
- 8:36for a while. Screenwriter pretty well tested,
- 8:40I would say. And in looking at this, I have
- 8:43watched Padam Padam, or at least I watched maybe like half of it.
- 8:48And then I kind of got a little sidetracked with another drama
- 8:51or whatever. And I and I basically dropped it
- 8:54out of like I watched something else and then I never went back
- 8:57to it. But it wasn't like an
- 8:58intentional drop, you know what I'm saying?
- 9:00Like there's a difference between a life happened and I
- 9:03watched something else. And like, yeah, I didn't
- 9:06necessarily hate it. I would say that's a very
- 9:08spiritually, very similar to our Blues.
- 9:13Not that it's the same format, omnibus format with a lot of
- 9:16different interconnected stories, but I would say Eben's
- 9:19character is very similar to the male lead in Padam Padam.
- 9:23So when I heard, when I saw that she had written that, I was like
- 9:26both of the director and writer had worked on that.
- 9:29I was like, oh, that makes too much sense.
- 9:31So if you want something along those lines, check it out.
- 9:35And then we're going to get into this cast.
- 9:37So here we go. We're only going to we're going
- 9:41to talk about a handful of people in this cast at length
- 9:46and then. We're because there's like 50 of
- 9:48them. I want to get this out there.
- 9:50This is an All Star cast. This is a well regarded
- 9:56decorated cast. OK?
- 9:59Every one of these people has been on TV screens, has worked
- 10:04with each other as well as the director and the writer before,
- 10:09and it's all intertwined and there's a lot of history coming
- 10:16into the show and putting together.
- 10:18This is like Avengers Assemble here and going through and
- 10:23making this spreadsheet, I would say for this cast felt like
- 10:30making before End Game. It was like, Oh my God, we had
- 10:34to have watched all this stuff beforehand to get like the
- 10:37gravity of this movie. That's what it felt like making
- 10:40this. My sister called it flash cards
- 10:45when she saw what this looked like in here, 'cause it's like
- 10:47their photo, the name of the character, their name,
- 10:52everything. So here we go.
- 10:54Eviogan plays Idung Sok, a truck merchant who was born in Chechu.
- 10:59He has been in about 36 movies, including most recently Concrete
- 11:04Utopia. He's been in an emergency
- 11:07declaration, the Fortress. He played the T1000 in
- 11:12Terminator Genesis. Matt, you're already laughing
- 11:16Memories of the Sword from 2015, which I really liked that movie
- 11:20for some reason. I watched it and was like, whoa,
- 11:23this is mind blowing. And I tried to get it like in my
- 11:25own personal collection of Blu rays, Masquerade from 2012,
- 11:29which is an excellent, excellent movie.
- 11:31It is the inspiration for the show The Crowned Clown.
- 11:35Again, excellent show. So a lot of movies here going
- 11:40even further back, I saw the Devil from 2010.
- 11:43I recently saw this movie. And then I did experience a
- 11:46little bit of Satan in this movie watching it.
- 11:51He won the Day Song the grand prize in 2011 at the Beck Song
- 11:57Awards for his role in I Saw the Devil.
- 12:00Totally deserved. He was in Iris the movie.
- 12:02This is back when the Cage dramas.
- 12:04If they were so successful, they would do multiple seasons.
- 12:07They made a sequel. Rare.
- 12:09Then they would do another sequel that was a movie.
- 12:12So this was where this was like the High School Musical
- 12:15blueprint where it was like High School Musical, High School
- 12:17Musical two and then High School Musical three was in theaters of
- 12:20theatrical release. That's Iris the movie.
- 12:24So other movies like Joint Security Area, Hero, Good Bad,
- 12:29the weird, tons of things. He's got nearly 26 credits from
- 12:34television. Squid Game is most recent.
- 12:37I think he was frontman Mr. Sunshine.
- 12:41Iris again. I bring up Iris because he won
- 12:43Best actor at the 2010 Beck Song Awards for his role in Iris.
- 12:49I have to be honest, I did not finish Iris when I first watched
- 12:53I. Haven't seen it either.
- 12:55Yeah, but yeah. Love Mr. Sunshine.
- 12:58Love Squid Game. Yeah, he's he's classic.
- 13:01Yeah, he's great. Classic classic K drama and film
- 13:04actor. He I kind of consider him more
- 13:06of a film actor, but how do you guys feel about EBO Nunn?
- 13:09I I just love him but. I I definitely consider him a
- 13:13film actor and I saw The Devil as one of my favorite horror
- 13:16movies. And I have a great memory.
- 13:18My my mom and I were visiting Korea and she was like, oh,
- 13:21there's a new young movie do you want to go watch?
- 13:23And I was like, Are you sure? She's like, yeah, it's young and
- 13:26we got to go watch it. But she doesn't.
- 13:27She didn't know what it was going to be about you.
- 13:29Were like 12? How old were you?
- 13:30You saw this with your mom. Yeah, I was around that age.
- 13:33Yeah, but she, she didn't know what it was going to be about.
- 13:36And and Chiming Chick is one of my favorite actors and hers as
- 13:39well. He plays the the villain in the
- 13:41movie, but her, her, her, you know, her face was in her hands
- 13:45the entire time. But I loved it.
- 13:47I thought it was great. Oh God it's so concerning like
- 13:53the whole movie is. Yeah.
- 13:56Pins and needles. Anyway, highly recommend,
- 13:59definitely highly recommend it. And actually I have a a poll up
- 14:04on the on the Patreon feed because there's a bunch of
- 14:07movies that I've I'm looking to cover maybe, but I can't cover
- 14:10them all for spooky season, which is coming up really fast.
- 14:14And that's one of the movies that's on there.
- 14:16I don't know if people realize like what it is.
- 14:20And I'm really terrified to rewatch it, but I'll do it.
- 14:24I'll do it for the pod. You know what I'm saying?
- 14:26Like I'll brave it again. I'll do it for the pod.
- 14:30So his mother in the show is played by Kim.
- 14:34Hey JA, she plays Kangok Thong is the name of her character.
- 14:39This woman is prolific. She's the first and only person
- 14:44to have won the Tea Song four times at the Back Song Arts
- 14:47Awards in 7989, 2009 and 20/19. She was on a recurring Almost
- 14:54Like Days of Our Lives, but the show was called Country Diaries
- 14:58in which she appeared for 22 years.
- 15:01And this is notable because it made her a household name and it
- 15:06cemented her image among the South Korean audience as an
- 15:09iconic, unconditionally loving and self sacrificing mother.
- 15:15Which comes into play because Our Blues that is called into
- 15:20question that whole persona that she has built over the course of
- 15:25her career playing amazing strong mothers.
- 15:30She's been in five move only 5 movies and one of them is mother
- 15:34from 2009. This is a very famous Bong Joon
- 15:37Ho movie that Bong Joon Ho like famously was like I wouldn't
- 15:42have created like I went after her to play this character and
- 15:47it took years for her to agree to do it.
- 15:50And I wouldn't have done it if it if she didn't play the title
- 15:52character. And she was the first because of
- 15:55this movie. She was the first actress to be
- 15:57named best actress by the LA Film Critics Association.
- 16:00It was so impactful I'd highly recommend watching it.
- 16:05Plus one bin plays her son in the movie.
- 16:08She's been in 90 plus TV dramas. If you if you look online I
- 16:14think Wikipedia has it all. Asian Wiki doesn't have it all,
- 16:17but she's been acting since the 60s and some things I know her
- 16:22from are Princess Hours is the number one thing that I know her
- 16:27from. She's the Queen Mother.
- 16:30That's 2006. I loved her in that.
- 16:33I thought she was so precious and she's been in things like
- 16:37Dear My Friends from 2016 and then she was in The Light in
- 16:41Your Eyes in 2019 with Hanji Min.
- 16:43Also in our Blues. She won the grand prize, the
- 16:49song for this role that she did in The Light in Your Eyes at the
- 16:5355th Bexhang Awards. So she is really, really
- 16:56decorated, really well known and I don't think international
- 17:00audiences necessarily get the the big thing of putting her in
- 17:05this role opposite Ebiogan. Yeah, definitely not in this
- 17:10role. Definitely not Mom of the Year.
- 17:12For this. Character that she's playing,
- 17:15but yeah, she's great in this, you know, you feel for her.
- 17:20Yeah, she does a lot to you in this in this one.
- 17:22She does a lot to you exactly like she manhandles us.
- 17:26She, she will make you feel, yeah.
- 17:28She will make you feel something, yeah.
- 17:30Yeah, So following her up, we got Shin Mina.
- 17:33She plays Min so Na, a single parent with a child who came to
- 17:38Jeju and works with Yi Dong Sok. I don't think that's necessarily
- 17:42right. That's one like Wikipedia, but
- 17:45let's keep it vague. That's fine.
- 17:46That's fine, fine. She's been in 15 movies,
- 17:52including A Bittersweet Life from 2005.
- 17:55This is a reunion for her and EB Yungun because EB Yungun and her
- 18:00starred in A Bittersweet Life together.
- 18:02Yes, so very famously. And then she's also been in 15
- 18:07TV shows. Everyone knows her from hometown
- 18:09Cha Cha Cha. In 2021, that was a beloved
- 18:13pandemic show. She's in chief of staff seasons
- 18:161:00 and 2:00 Tomorrow with You, Oh my Venus Arang and the
- 18:20Magistrate. My girlfriend is a Kumio, so on
- 18:24and so forth, but she's had a very long career.
- 18:28She's household name as well, and she famously has also dated
- 18:33chemo bin for I don't know how long.
- 18:36I really don't know how long they've been dating, but it's
- 18:39been a really long time. A long time.
- 18:42Yeah, maybe close to a decade that they've been dating.
- 18:45So what do you guys feel about Shimena?
- 18:48Have you guys seen Bittersweet Life?
- 18:49That was one of the first EB on the movies I've ever seen, no?
- 18:52Kidding. At the time, I didn't know who
- 18:55she was. I knew who, you know, I was just
- 18:57discovering him. But after I rewatched it and I
- 19:00was like, oh, that's Shimena. Yeah.
- 19:05Yeah, she's great. You know, I think she's
- 19:06fantastic. She's great in this role too.
- 19:08We'll talk about it, but yeah, she stole this drama for me.
- 19:11Like she really cared. Really.
- 19:13Oh, that's so nice to hear. So we're going to follow her
- 19:17with E Chungun, who plays Chunguni, the owner of a fish
- 19:22store who has bubbly charm. I didn't write that part.
- 19:27So she's been in 34 movies, including her first movie role
- 19:32was in Mother 2009 with, yeah, the same Fung Jun Ho movie.
- 19:40She was I Chung's relative. I don't know, some bit part in
- 19:43there, I guess. And then she's been in the
- 19:45wailing from 2016. She plays talkies wife.
- 19:50Listen, the wailing. I had to like sit down and like
- 19:55practice meditative breathing after that.
- 19:58Like that movie put me in a state.
- 20:01I don't know why I decided to watch horror movies at like
- 20:04midnight when I'm trying to fall asleep.
- 20:06I'm like, yeah, I can press play.
- 20:08I'm like, these are really scary movies and think I'm going to
- 20:13sleep well tonight. And I don't know what possesses
- 20:18me to do this, but I'm not. It's not just once or twice that
- 20:21I've done this. And this one I think I did in
- 20:23December. I watched The Wailing and I had
- 20:26I, I was wrecked. I mean crazy eyes wrecked after
- 20:30that one I watched. So then she's also been in Okja
- 20:36from 2017. Do you guys remember Okja?
- 20:39Of course, Bung Jung Ho, right? Yeah, yeah.
- 20:43She's in Battleship Island in from 2017, a taxi driver and of
- 20:49course, Parasite from 2019. They did her dirty with a Peach,
- 20:55Peach fuzz in that movie. She's been.
- 20:58Yeah, she's been in 43 TV shows. I can't tell you what they all
- 21:05are. We'd be here all day.
- 21:06But some of them include Weightlifting Ferry Kimbukchu
- 21:11from 20/16/2017 with Jong Nani from the Swag crew.
- 21:17They are both in our Blues. She was in Tomorrow with you
- 21:22alongside She Nina Fight for My way while You Were sleeping.
- 21:26Mr. Sunshine alongside Yves Yungun.
- 21:29She's been in familiar wife the light in your eyes both with Han
- 21:33Ji Min and Kim Kim Hijab when the camellia blooms with Kole
- 21:38Duchim. Like all these all these people
- 21:41have worked together or have like been in the same shows
- 21:44together. Juvenile justice from 2022.
- 21:47She's been in daily dose of sunshine and most recently
- 21:50Curtis Miss Night and day from this year, which I think is
- 21:54currently airing. Yeah, yes.
- 21:56So she's had a very illustrious, long, long life, as you know,
- 22:03people's mothers, people's aunts.
- 22:05And I think she's finally getting the the roles that I
- 22:11would love to see her in that I'm really satisfied seeing her
- 22:15in. And I love her as an actress.
- 22:18I always perk up when I see her in a project.
- 22:23Yeah, she's, she's got a toughness to her, but a warmth
- 22:28and silliness. Yeah, she's she's got a really
- 22:30wide range. She's fantastic in this one too.
- 22:34Yes. So one person we wanted to shout
- 22:37out as well was Chasungun, who plays Hansu, and he's related to
- 22:42her story. He returns to the hometown early
- 22:46on in the show. He's like in the first three
- 22:47episodes, basically, and he masquerades as a perfect urban
- 22:51man. And he is then his first love.
- 22:55He's been in like 30 movies and 14 TV shows, including A Korean
- 23:02Odyssey and The Greatest Love. I remember seeing him in The
- 23:06Greatest Love and I was like, Oh my God, it's that ridiculous guy
- 23:09from The Greatest Love when I saw him in our Blues.
- 23:13He's quite famous in Korea. So how do you guys feel about
- 23:17this guy? Did you have have you guys seen
- 23:18him in other things? Oh, yeah, he's, he's really
- 23:20famous in Korea 'cause he also is a model.
- 23:23I mean, if you just, I mean, just clearly look at him see
- 23:26like Holly is. Yeah.
- 23:28But I, some of my favorite movies recently have him.
- 23:31So Night in Paradise, he plays an amazing gangster in that a
- 23:35really fun action series called Tokjun, also known as Believer.
- 23:39He was in the first and second of those.
- 23:41And then there was another movie recently called Sinkhole, where
- 23:44he plays a great character in that movie as well.
- 23:47So he is. He's a bona fide movie star.
- 23:49He's a movie star. Yeah, Yeah.
- 23:52So to follow him up, we got Kimo Bin.
- 23:55This was oh, he plays PAC Jung Joon, a captain with a direct
- 24:00and warm nature. This is this is his comeback
- 24:06descriptions. I know these descriptions.
- 24:08His comeback show since he was diagnosed with nasopharyngeal
- 24:14cancer sometime in 2017, which was a bombshell back after
- 24:20uncontrollably fond in 2016 came out.
- 24:23Then it was revealed that he was struggling, had been diagnosed
- 24:26with cancer and he was going to be taking a prolonged break from
- 24:29acting. So this is his comeback.
- 24:32This was he hadn't done anything since 2016, so this was a big
- 24:37deal for Kim Woobin to reappear and be healthy and look great
- 24:43and everyone was happy to see him in a show with Shin Min now,
- 24:47which was is his long time love. They were not playing lovers in
- 24:53our Blues and you might recognize him as well from the
- 24:57airs in 2013. We have an episode on the airs
- 25:03as well on the Timber Feed if you want to scroll back and
- 25:06listen. So that that was fun.
- 25:09He's been in Gentlemen's Dignity and most recently he was in
- 25:12Black Knight on Netflix show from 2023.
- 25:15So Kimo Bin, I think everyone loves Kimo Bin, but he doesn't
- 25:21have a long resume like other actors and actresses on that
- 25:25we've discussed so far that we've covered so far, Yeah,
- 25:28yeah. Shoulders for days though, like
- 25:31shoulders from it was coast to coast on this guy.
- 25:34Yeah, he's pretty tall looking and got a good smile on him.
- 25:40And yeah, people seem to really enjoy Kimovin, but.
- 25:44Why not? Yeah.
- 25:45Why not Sure. Sure, I think it.
- 25:50Wait, is he the last one? I think.
- 25:52He's yeah. I think we better.
- 25:54The audience out there was like, Oh my gosh.
- 25:57That we have agreed to discuss at length.
- 26:01OK. There are many, many more.
- 26:03No, there's way more where that came from everybody, but we're
- 26:06just. Don't mention them.
- 26:09Yeah. What did you guys think of our
- 26:12Blues when you first watched it? And if you rewatched it, how did
- 26:17you guys feel after the rewatch this time around?
- 26:20Yeah, I agree with you, Jess, that this flew under the radar
- 26:23from me. I didn't pick it up as it aired.
- 26:26I picked it up maybe a year later, I think cuz Brandon
- 26:29recommended it to me. He Brandon said that he really
- 26:33loved this one and I should check it out.
- 26:34And I was like, well, if Brandon says I should check it out, I
- 26:37should watch it. And so I started it and yeah, I
- 26:40love this kind of drama. I love ensemble casts.
- 26:43I love intertwined stories. I think it may be like we just
- 26:48talked about the cast and there's a lot of stars in it,
- 26:50but the stars are solid and they're prolific, but they're
- 26:55not necessarily the kind of stars that you say, oh, I have
- 26:59to watch that drama because so and so is in it.
- 27:02Like, I don't think for me at least, there's that person for
- 27:07me that makes me say, oh, I have to watch that drama because so
- 27:10and so is in it. But once you get started it, it
- 27:13just sucks you in. The storytelling is fantastic.
- 27:16Yeah. So I, I, I didn't notice it
- 27:18right away, but yeah, I picked it up.
- 27:20It's kind of later after, after hearing other people talk about
- 27:24it. So it's kind of one of those
- 27:25dramas, I think. And you liked it?
- 27:27Absolutely. I liked it.
- 27:28Yeah. OK.
- 27:29I'll talk to you more when we get to the ratings.
- 27:31I'll talk to you more when we. Get to OK, OK, OK.
- 27:33So, Brandon, let me know what do you think of the show?
- 27:37Yeah, so for poach a playlist, we we actually picked this title
- 27:41up. So we watched it from the first
- 27:43day that it came out. And for me, you know, IB young
- 27:45Hon is one of the greatest actors.
- 27:48So there was no way that we weren't going to pick this up.
- 27:51I mean, this was his venture back into another K drama and
- 27:55the ensemble cast, as Curtis mentioned, really drew me in.
- 27:59I loved the format where it's a it's set in Chejo and you have
- 28:05different vignettes, like every two episodes is set on a
- 28:08different relationship and it's all intertwined.
- 28:10It's kind of like a anthology and it all kind of ends
- 28:15perfectly and it just tells this phenomenal story of all of these
- 28:19great characters played by wonderful actors and actresses.
- 28:23I mean, what's not to like for a drama like this?
- 28:25It made me laugh. It made Jenny cry.
- 28:28There's I don't want to misspeak, but I think this might
- 28:31be one of the dramas that Jenny and I go back to the most.
- 28:34And it's for specific scenes. Jenny and I will say, Oh my God,
- 28:39remember that one scene from our Blues off?
- 28:40We have to go turn it on. And we'll just like, Fast
- 28:42forward to that one scene and we're like, oh, this is an
- 28:44amazing, amazing. This is a masterpiece.
- 28:46And we'll just cycle through that every once in a while.
- 28:49Yeah, I so I didn't pick it up in 2022 when it aired and it
- 28:56really had nothing to do with anything.
- 28:58Like I was just watching other things and watching things for
- 29:02the podcast as well. So, and I have to say, slice of
- 29:06life is not my bag. It takes a lot for me to think,
- 29:11oh, I need to watch this slice of life show and I need to watch
- 29:13it right now. Slice of live shows have a long
- 29:16shelf life and so to me, it's never, there's never a sense of
- 29:21urgency to watch it. And for some reason, like I just
- 29:29never gravitate towards slice of live shows.
- 29:31It's takes something really special to drag me in and hold
- 29:36my attention. And for some I really enjoy it
- 29:41and for others I I don't like for famous ones too.
- 29:46What's a famous slice of life like?
- 29:47The Reply series is a really famous slice of life set of trio
- 29:52of shows and for those I only like one of them.
- 29:57And the most famous one that everyone raves about.
- 30:00I don't really enjoy it that much.
- 30:02It was not an enjoyable experience to watch it.
- 30:05So if there was any hype around our Blues I didn't hear it.
- 30:09And if if there was anybody speaking nice things about it, I
- 30:13was like, OK, another good show that I have to put on my
- 30:16extensive watch list of like, hundreds of shows at this point.
- 30:21Like, it's take a number. You know what I'm saying?
- 30:23Yeah. Yeah.
- 30:25So it wasn't until this, you know, late last year when I was
- 30:29putting together the lineup that I was like, you know what, I
- 30:31kind of do want to press play on our Blues 'cause I took a closer
- 30:36look at the cast and I was like, you know what, I kind of I'm
- 30:40feeling it. I was in the mood.
- 30:42I've said this before, I'm a mood watcher.
- 30:45And later on, after I had already put it on the docket for
- 30:49season five of Tabak, I saw a scene of Shimena in the show and
- 30:56I was like, Oh my God, thank God.
- 30:59I'm already planning on watching this show because this scene is
- 31:03tremendous. And I won't say what it is.
- 31:06I will, I'll say what it is in spoilers, but I was like taken
- 31:10aback by the incredible depth of the scene and the way it was
- 31:15acted and the incredible cruelty from some of the character, the
- 31:21other character that was playing, playing the scene with
- 31:23her and the subject matter of what the character was, what her
- 31:29character was going through. And I was like, well, shit, if
- 31:32that's one character and there's a whole plethora of characters
- 31:37that the show is about, then absolutely like, sign me up.
- 31:42Because I run the risk of getting bored when there's so
- 31:46many characters and it's an ensemble cast.
- 31:48I don't want to be in it for like one or two people.
- 31:51And then the rest I'm kind of like, oh, OK, whatever, that's a
- 31:53fine story. I felt like every story had
- 31:58merit. Every story was important, every
- 32:02storyline was interesting. And even though some are more
- 32:08like favorites definitely and maybe some made me cry and
- 32:13others didn't, but overall I felt like the stories and the
- 32:18show was super well done. I thought it was brilliant and I
- 32:22had a wonderful time. I appreciated getting to know
- 32:26the characters like I was at the end of the show.
- 32:28I was like, it was an honor to like watch this show and
- 32:31experience this little corner of Teju and, you know, be in this
- 32:38in their little slice of life, you know, and I think that's the
- 32:41goal of slice of life. And maybe I'm like, I have too
- 32:44high of a standard for a slice of life where I like want to be
- 32:49so immersed and so honored and in love with every character.
- 32:56Even if I don't like the character, I'm like, I'm happy
- 32:59to be here and watching your story.
- 33:00You know what I'm saying? That so many don't meet my
- 33:05standard and I just get bored or I check out at some point and
- 33:10this one exceeded my expectations.
- 33:13So from everything like from the way it was shot, it was
- 33:17stunning. The location, the vistas,
- 33:20everything about Cheju was so beautifully captured.
- 33:26The music was great, even the stuff that wasn't OST, it was
- 33:30very ratatouille, French music, cooking, playlist type music
- 33:37that was playing and I was like, this is right up my frickin
- 33:39alley. The way it was shot again, like
- 33:43cool handheld shots. They were kind of taking some
- 33:45risks, like they were shots of being in the passenger seat POV
- 33:51alongside characters. Someone opens a door and the
- 33:55camera follows them through the door and stuff like that is
- 33:59really immersive and makes you feel like you're just a family
- 34:02on the wall versus stuff that's a little more static or, you
- 34:08know, immovable things that feel a little more staged.
- 34:12And this felt like you were in it in the action with them and
- 34:17walking through the door with them, going into their house
- 34:19with them, getting in the car with them and things like that.
- 34:23Really, you know, if you're not paying attention, you you just
- 34:26feel the effects of it. But that is really difficult to
- 34:29do, right? Like technically difficult to do
- 34:33over and over again for 20 episodes over so many different
- 34:37stories. So really appreciated that
- 34:40attention to detail in the cinematography and I the acting
- 34:46was so top notch. You know, we have already gone
- 34:49through a handful of actors, but there's even more that we didn't
- 34:53go through their phommography and discuss them at length.
- 34:58But like, honestly, it is a feat just to assemble this amount of
- 35:02talent. Yeah, no weak links at all.
- 35:04No weak links and it's all good. Everyone is solid.
- 35:09Everyone is solid and they covered a lot of themes that K
- 35:14dramas just don't tend to do things.
- 35:18Themes about, you know, disability, themes about mental
- 35:25illness, mental health, fractured relationships between
- 35:32elderly parents, you know, mother and son and teen
- 35:38pregnancy. Like, you name it, it's in this
- 35:41show and they handle it with care.
- 35:44So all that just to say it was a great experience and they they
- 35:50exceeded my expectation. It was really good, really good.
- 35:54Held my attention. Do you recommend this to
- 35:56everyone? Yeah, yeah, I think I would.
- 35:59I mean, caveat not if you're not a slice of life person, if you
- 36:04maybe don't like small town shows, if you've watched a few
- 36:08and you're like, I'm not a small town person.
- 36:10Like take me back to Seoul, maybe don't watch the show.
- 36:13Like sorry to say, like this is not said in the big city.
- 36:16Let me see, if you're not a fan of anthologies and that sort of
- 36:22storytelling, perhaps this isn't the show for you.
- 36:26And especially this one set up per episode.
- 36:31So each episode is focused on a different character and their
- 36:36journey and it pushes their story forward a little more each
- 36:40episode. You'll know who it is the story
- 36:43is about because it is named. This episode title is the
- 36:47characters names. If that's not your bag, perhaps
- 36:52don't watch. So these are very specific, like
- 36:54caveats. Don't watch if you don't like
- 36:56this sort of thing. But overall I think that it's a
- 37:02lovely show, really relaxing at a lot of points and a really
- 37:06stressful in a lot of points. So something for everybody.
- 37:11Yeah, not a light watch. Definitely one that you have to
- 37:15kind of be in the in the mood for and ready for.
- 37:19There's not that one romances several love story arcs, but
- 37:24some of them are messy and there's a lot of messiness, a
- 37:27lot of sadness in this. There's a lot of sad, the themes
- 37:32of loss. And you know, if you're a person
- 37:37that wants instant gratification in your K dramas, this isn't the
- 37:41K drama for you because you're not going to get the perfect
- 37:45love story that's A to B to C You're going to get A to C,
- 37:52maybe to D. To gamma you.
- 37:55Know what I'm saying? Like it like skips around and
- 37:58that's how life is like. You don't get easily digestible
- 38:04content in this. Yeah.
- 38:07So in that case, if you're if you're looking for that and you
- 38:13want that in this Seaside K drama, then no, like that's not
- 38:17what this is. Yeah, I mean, it's intimidating
- 38:21too. Like if you look at 20 episodes,
- 38:24like I don't think if I saw it, I don't know if I would turn it
- 38:27on right away. Like, oh, twenty episodes,
- 38:29that's a lot. But there are no wasted
- 38:31episodes. How long did it take you guys to
- 38:34get through the 20 episodes? Was it easy to binge or did you
- 38:38find yourself needing to just take some breaks and pauses
- 38:41because of how heavy some of the subject matter was?
- 38:44Good question. I think my wife and I did in
- 38:46about two weeks, I think. So we didn't power through it.
- 38:49We, we moved pretty steadily. But you know, one a day, maybe
- 38:53two a day. I'm not going to do six in a
- 38:55row, you know, something like that.
- 38:57Yeah, I did the same thing. And that was mostly because I
- 39:00was working through holiday weekends, family visits, and I
- 39:04could do two to three a day. And then I would do no episodes
- 39:09for like 3 days and then I would come in and do one episode and
- 39:13then two episodes and so on and so forth.
- 39:16So it was really herky jerky my watching, but theoretically, I
- 39:20could get through multiple episodes before I got really
- 39:24sleepy and then had to like, actually go to sleep.
- 39:29But yeah, I think it was really easy for me to watch the
- 39:32episodes. I didn't feel like any of them
- 39:34were a chore at all. And even when I got through a
- 39:39few episodes that were about a favorite character, I really
- 39:42resonated with that storyline. And then the next episode is
- 39:45something new, a new storyline, and we're pushing something else
- 39:49forward. I was like, oh, let's let's look
- 39:51at this, let's see this new thing now.
- 39:53And I was very open to the other stories.
- 39:57And that's something that I think is a testament to the
- 40:01writing. It's a testament to the the
- 40:02acting and the way that the ensemble cast has so much
- 40:07chemistry. And even if you're seeing this
- 40:10character's story, you've already seen that character,
- 40:13like throughout the other episodes.
- 40:16And now you're focusing on like, what's their beef?
- 40:18What is their deal? Why?
- 40:19Why are they mad? Why are they sad?
- 40:21Why are they whatever? Why are they the way they are?
- 40:24And it just goes to show that I think in my mind, you have to
- 40:29have good writing, then a good cast, and then everything flows
- 40:34from there. Yeah, yeah, I agree.
- 40:38This drama was nominated for a Three Pics Song Awards Best
- 40:42drama, Best director and best Actor for EB Young.
- 40:45I was taken aback that he didn't win, but I know.
- 40:51Yeah, but it's OK. This OST.
- 40:54What did you guys think of this OST?
- 40:57I mean, as a big BTS fan, I had to support Chimin, who has a
- 41:00great song on here. I feel bad.
- 41:04I always forget the other singer on that song because it's it's
- 41:06like a duet. Oh yeah.
- 41:08But I I do know. That Chimin is on there Ha Song
- 41:11Moon is the other singer on the song which is called With You.
- 41:18Yep, and I think some of the Espa girls did a song on this as
- 41:23well. But overall the soundtrack
- 41:25really fits this Teju vibe and it's out of some of the dramas
- 41:30that we've seen in the past. I listened to this OST.
- 41:33Maybe top three, Top five most listen.
- 41:38Oh my gosh, that's so cool. So I forgot that Chimin was on
- 41:44the OST because I had in the back of mine, I was like, there
- 41:47was an OST that Chimin was on and everyone was really excited
- 41:51about it. And then the first time I heard
- 41:56the actual song was in the context of the show.
- 41:58And I'm watching it and I hear Chimin's voice and I'm like,
- 42:01holy shit. I think this is the show that he
- 42:04did the OST on. And it was like making
- 42:07connections, but it was like really delayed connect
- 42:09connections, you know what I'm saying?
- 42:11Like, if I was a true BTS fan, I would know exactly like which
- 42:16show he was doing this for and what the song was.
- 42:20I would have already heard the song in its entirety and all
- 42:23this stuff. But yeah, I really enjoyed this
- 42:26OSC as well. All the songs are really good.
- 42:28You have familiar, like, faces, so to speak, on the OSC.
- 42:33You have like Davici is on here at the Yon Mellow Man Stacy
- 42:37Punch Highs is on here. Some of the if you look up these
- 42:43artists, you'll be like, Oh my God, I love this OSC from XYZ
- 42:47other show. So these are really comforting
- 42:51sort of artists that provided a wonderful soundtrack to art
- 42:57Blues and I thought kept kept thinking over and over, this is
- 43:02a really good OSD. Like I got to add some of these
- 43:04songs when I get done with this. I got to circle back on this OSD
- 43:07and add these songs to my playlist for sure.
- 43:09Yeah. Is there anything else you guys
- 43:11wanted to talk about before we get into the spoiler section
- 43:14'cause we're going to give our scores and then spoiler section
- 43:17but. I'm ready to rock'n'roll.
- 43:20OK, let's do it. Let's do it.
- 43:21OK, so before we get into the spoiler section, what would you
- 43:25give our Blues out of fives? Hold your bottles.
- 43:28Five being the best and one or zero being like terrible.
- 43:34I would give it like 4.5 out of five, yeah, 4.5 out of five.
- 43:40Yeah. All right, Curtis.
- 43:43All right, You know, I'm. I'm going to give it.
- 43:45I'm going to give it five out of five.
- 43:48It's on my it's on my Mount Rushmore.
- 43:50Wait, wait, wait. It's on my downplay because I
- 43:52asked you earlier, you didn't say if you liked it.
- 43:54And then I asked you, did you like it?
- 43:55And you were like, yeah, yeah. And then you come in hot with a
- 43:595 out of five soldier bottles like you like.
- 44:02To you got to add some dramas. We need some tension.
- 44:05We need some tension here. No, I I would put it on my Mount
- 44:08Rushmore. I would say, you know, top five,
- 44:10top four, top five drama for me. Like I really, I, I liked it.
- 44:14I liked everything about it. So I would put it up there.
- 44:17Definitely. I've only watched it twice.
- 44:19I could I could watch it a few more times.
- 44:21There's so much going on. So I would again, I don't know,
- 44:25like it took me a while to recommend it to my wife, but we
- 44:28sat down and we started watching it and, and she loved it as
- 44:31well. It's, it's a slow burn, but it's
- 44:35such a good burn, you know, so it's so like heartwarming isn't
- 44:41the right, it's just, it just hits you, you know, hits you in
- 44:43in some good places. So I I would give it a high
- 44:46rating. I think my .5 deduction is just
- 44:49for some of the storylines that I didn't care that much for, but
- 44:53others I absolutely loved. And so I think that's why I gave
- 44:57it a .5 deduction. But Curtis, I'm happy that a
- 45:00wreck that I gave you made it to your Mount Rushmore.
- 45:02That makes me very happy. Yeah, this is full circle
- 45:06because Brandon recommended our Blues to you, Curtis, and then I
- 45:10think at some point you recommended it to me and then it
- 45:13was floating in the ether. And then I'm sure that that
- 45:16played into my decision. She'll be finally like, hey, I
- 45:18need to watch our Blues. So wow, we're just influencing
- 45:23each other is what I'm saying. Well, where do you put it?
- 45:26You haven't given us your number yet.
- 45:27I think my number is 4.5, maybe five out of five because I loved
- 45:34it. It was, it was really a solid
- 45:37show. I had almost nothing.
- 45:40There's I can't think of anything bad to say about it.
- 45:43It's not, it's not, it's not worth like deducting anything.
- 45:49Like, I don't know. There are some storylines that
- 45:54after seeing the whole body of work, I'm like, OK, that wasn't
- 45:57my favorite. But still in the moment I was
- 46:00like, oh, this is really hitting me like in I don't know.
- 46:05I was still like, it's deep and it's real when I was in it and
- 46:08now after seeing it and I was like, all right, that's so good.
- 46:12It's up. Worth deducting anything.
- 46:15I don't know. I don't know.
- 46:16Five out of five. We'll just give it five out of
- 46:18five, four and a half, five and five and a five out of five
- 46:21soldier bottles. We are going to get into
- 46:24spoilers right after this. Excuse me, I can't try.
- 46:29I can't try, you know. I have no tingles.
- 46:34Oh, sorry. This crossing shit.
- 46:38What? All right, we're on the other
- 46:42side of spoilers, so anything goes.
- 46:44We are going to spoil the storylines in our Blues.
- 46:48If you want to preserve your first watch of our Blues, then
- 46:52stop listening. Watch our Blues and come back.
- 46:55But if you don't care, they keep listening.
- 46:57I think the storyline that nobody particularly likes, for
- 47:02lack of a better word, is the first one, the first three
- 47:05episodes. Am I correct in thinking that
- 47:08that's Unni and Hansu's story? Is that right?
- 47:13I mean, you need it. You need it there to set up the
- 47:15relationships between the other townsfolk.
- 47:20Yeah, yeah. Don't love the actual story.
- 47:22You need all the periphery things and how she interacts
- 47:25with everybody and how she's sort of like the backbone of the
- 47:28town financially because she owns this very successful
- 47:33business. She owns buildings, and she's a
- 47:36very wealthy woman who is still on that grind, you know what I'm
- 47:40saying? Like, it also sets up her
- 47:41character, her persona. But it is a reunion of first
- 47:46loves. And you get Han Soo, who's back
- 47:50in the mix. And I for sure thought he was
- 47:52going to be a bigger part of the show, like he was going to
- 47:55continue living in church. Didn't happen, no.
- 48:00He makes 15 minute appearance at the end.
- 48:03Yeah, they like brought him back for the final lap and I was
- 48:06like, oh, just leave him where he was.
- 48:09Like, he didn't even need to be back here in the episode. 20 He
- 48:12didn't need that, Yeah. But I did like the old, like
- 48:19he's an old banker, burned out, exhausted with life.
- 48:23And they had the scene on the beach where he's reminiscing on
- 48:25their golden youth, and he's overwhelmed with nostalgia.
- 48:30And he runs into the water and floats next to his teenage self,
- 48:36who is so young and carefree. And that visual and the the
- 48:41juxtaposition of his younger self to his current self was
- 48:46something like, I was like, there's something in that.
- 48:49And I really felt that where maybe people can relate to that,
- 48:54where you feel like life has just beat you down.
- 48:58And if you look back on your life and you look back on your
- 49:01youth, you, you miss who you used to be, that naive person
- 49:06who wasn't concerned with working, wasn't concerned with
- 49:09responsibilities, wasn't exhausted all the time, wasn't
- 49:14in debt, so on and so forth. The list goes on.
- 49:17So that part of their story resonated with me.
- 49:23And of course, like the way that it plays out was really
- 49:26heartbreaking. Did you guys like feel any type
- 49:29of way about it or was it just me that it was like kind of in
- 49:31my fields the first three episodes?
- 49:33I thought it was an important story to set the stage for the
- 49:36village and all the characters. I was just bummed because I
- 49:39really like that actor and I thought it would be interesting
- 49:42if he was a recurring member across the other episodes.
- 49:46We really don't see him after Episode 3 until the the last
- 49:49episode. I think when they're playing the
- 49:52friendly soccer game. I think it was a soccer game.
- 49:54It was like a field day that they had.
- 49:56I, I don't even know where they're playing against, like
- 49:59other village people that weren't in the in the ensemble
- 50:02cast. Yeah.
- 50:02Yeah, yeah, yeah. But.
- 50:06I grew to love when he's character across the the
- 50:09episodes and I really wanted her to have some type of love line
- 50:15later on and I was shocked that they didn't give her one.
- 50:18So then I think back and I'm like, oh, it would have been
- 50:21great if she could kind of have some relationship with her first
- 50:25love, but obviously it doesn't work out like that.
- 50:27But I was kind of bummed for in here as well.
- 50:29Yeah, I was so bummed for her. I was so bummed for her,
- 50:33especially when she's talking to him like her first love Han SU
- 50:39about how she's really hesitant to go on 1st dates and stuff
- 50:42like that. She says I think I'm turning
- 50:44into an awful person. I measure the pros and cons even
- 50:47when it comes to love. I'm a horrible person who only
- 50:49cares about my interests. I I think I'll die alone like
- 50:52she's she's so hurt by the fact that she might die alone because
- 50:59she has all of these conditions right?
- 51:02Like for falling in love that she says to him, she rejects
- 51:06people because maybe the guy is sick or he's taking care of
- 51:10someone who's sick and that means that he wants a caregiver
- 51:14wife or he's just interested in me because I'm rich, he's after
- 51:17my wealth or he's the eldest son who has to care for his aging
- 51:21parents. That'll def she'll definitely
- 51:23rejected because that responsibility and burden as she
- 51:26sees it would likely fall on her and put a strain on her and
- 51:30their brand new marriage. So all of these things, the, the
- 51:34responsibility and exhaustion of life and the, all of these
- 51:39societal expectations of women especially, she's like, I don't
- 51:45know. I don't want to fucking deal
- 51:46with that. Like I'm an independent lady.
- 51:47I have my own income, I'm wealthy.
- 51:50I don't need a man. And like, how's he going to make
- 51:55my life better? Basically?
- 51:56I don't want him to make my life worse.
- 52:00And it's like a I'm like, this is serious.
- 52:03Like I don't know how you guys felt about it, but I was like,
- 52:05she's she's preaching something good right now.
- 52:09Like, I don't know. It was, it was a very real
- 52:13lament, I think for her because she she was feeling like she was
- 52:17too picky. But I'm like, you can afford to
- 52:20be picky. You know what I'm saying?
- 52:23Anyway, it was heartbreaking to to see that little story play
- 52:27out, but then we get to, I think it's no, we don't get to Shin
- 52:35Mina yet, it's Yong Oak and Jong UN story do what did you guys
- 52:40think of this story? Wait, refresh my memory on.
- 52:42This So Yong Oak is Hanjiman. She is the Oh yeah, OK, younger
- 52:48hanyo. Yeah, let's give her a nickname.
- 52:51So like she has the sister with the with Down syndrome.
- 52:54I don't know a nickname, Brandon, you got a nickname,
- 52:56but. Just call her Hanyo.
- 52:59Hanyo. Hanyo, OK, the young hanyo.
- 53:02So it's her and Chong Joon Kimobin's character.
- 53:06OK, yeah, it's a it's a cute love story.
- 53:08I mean, it's again, there's it's what I love about this drama is
- 53:13that none of this is super clean.
- 53:15Everyone's, everyone's got some stuff, you know, everyone's got
- 53:19some history, some baggage, secrets.
- 53:25And and yet there's this, there's a love story brewing
- 53:29throughout the whole drama between these two.
- 53:32And you know, he comes through and he's as solid as you can be,
- 53:36you know, basically loving her even through her warts and her
- 53:41flaws. And she's a great character.
- 53:43You know, like she I think she shows some depth in her acting
- 53:47ability as well as the way they wrote her.
- 53:49Like she's got some real depth to her.
- 53:51And I just, yeah, I like this is my second favorite love story in
- 53:55this draw. Second favorite, OK, so we'll
- 53:59well, I'm sure we'll get to the your first favorite at some.
- 54:02Point. So this story was difficult for
- 54:06me, I think because I wanted them to get together.
- 54:09Obviously, I really loved their romance especially.
- 54:13There was such such an effortlessness when they showed
- 54:16them together, like especially after like they got together and
- 54:20started their relationship. Their little vignettes and
- 54:23montages of them spending time together and watching TV and,
- 54:28you know, laughing together and things like that, that I was
- 54:31like, that's a real relationship.
- 54:32Like what is where is Shimena? Because that looks real.
- 54:37I was convinced acting is is incredible in this.
- 54:41So I was like taken aback completely because they sold me
- 54:48on this relationship and their their love, right?
- 54:51That she's catching feelings and he was had already caught
- 54:55feelings like a long time ago. But he like initially this was
- 55:00funny to me initially. He's concerned about her body
- 55:02count and he writes down in his in his bus.
- 55:09Can I date a woman who's already been in so many relationships
- 55:12and all she had shared with him was that she had two past
- 55:17relationships. At this point she just says that
- 55:19there's two past, she has two exes, that he's as tall as one
- 55:24of her exes, and then there's another ex in the mix. 2 guys
- 55:32and I go, my guy, it's two exes. What are you talking so many
- 55:38Like he has made this story up in his mind that she's got like
- 55:42all of these. Guys, they kind of made her.
- 55:45Right, right. They kind of made her out to be
- 55:47a tease though, you know, like she was teasing with that other
- 55:50captain and yes. I wanted to get your.
- 55:52Perspective. It made him wonder.
- 55:53It made him wonder. Right.
- 55:55I wanted to get your perspective on this.
- 55:57Because the other captain, who was problematic by the way, she
- 56:02goes out with him when she goes dancing or something with him.
- 56:05And that escalates, 'cause that guy thinks he has some sort of
- 56:11claim like to her because she went out with him.
- 56:16They have a drunk night out. I have in my notes as the ugly
- 56:19captain, That's my nickname for that guy, the ugly captain.
- 56:26And he starts, he's drunk and he starts demanding they go to a
- 56:29motel and they she won't, he won't take no for an answer.
- 56:35What do you guys think about this whole situation?
- 56:37Because she is just, she's like deflecting, deflecting the whole
- 56:44time and trying to defuse the situation versus outright
- 56:50telling him, no, we're never going to go out.
- 56:55And I think she reads that drunk captain way better than anybody
- 57:00else in the cap in the town does.
- 57:02And she's like, he's good for a good time, but not for anything
- 57:05else. And I want to do what I want to
- 57:07do. And you know, that's that I saw
- 57:14there's I have a hiccup here with like calling her a tease
- 57:18necessarily because the show wants us to think she's a tease,
- 57:24you know what I'm saying? But like, all she did was go
- 57:28dancing with him. Maybe it's my Western lens.
- 57:31I think it's a bit of the, I think it's a bit of the Western
- 57:34lens as well. But you know, Korea is obviously
- 57:37more conservative. But when I was watching the
- 57:39show, in my head, I was thinking Yongl could have been a little
- 57:44bit more clear and a little bit more transparent on certain
- 57:47things. Obviously, she doesn't have to
- 57:49reveal anything she doesn't want to reveal, especially about her
- 57:51younger sister. But I just felt like she could
- 57:54have always kind of put some of the rumors down easily if she
- 57:58chose to. But she would always stay quiet.
- 58:01She would always act alone. I think if I'm remembering
- 58:04correctly, she she acts alone in one scene, which then puts some
- 58:08of the other hanyas in jeopardy I think if I'm remembering that
- 58:12correctly. Yeah, yeah.
- 58:15She starts harvesting. What is it?
- 58:18She starts. They're supposed to resurface
- 58:21every time they get something. They've harvest something.
- 58:25They get one thing and they're supposed to come up for for air.
- 58:29And The thing is, they're diving.
- 58:30They're not diving like 10 feet, they're diving 60 plus feet in
- 58:36the water. That's six stories down.
- 58:39So when they're telling her, hey, you need to do this, this
- 58:42is our procedure. This is our workflow, so to
- 58:45speak. And you're staying down longer
- 58:49just to grab more mollusks and, and, and sea creatures down
- 58:54there. You're harvesting more than one
- 58:56thing at a time. It's putting you at risk because
- 58:59we're supposed to do this together.
- 59:01We're in it all together. And your partner and you are
- 59:05supposed to keep an eye on each other.
- 59:07And if one person is 60 something plus feet above you
- 59:12catching a breath, she can't save you if anything goes wrong
- 59:18on the bottom of the ocean floor, is what they're saying.
- 59:22And so they're saying, they kept saying she was greedy.
- 59:25Right, so I think I think some of her actions definitely made
- 59:29her image in the village kind of worse than it really needed to
- 59:35be. I also don't mind her
- 59:38relationship with the The Ugly Captain as you call him because
- 59:41the scenes with Ki Mubin's character POC Jung Jun and the
- 59:45Ugly Captain were some comedic gold scenes so I didn't mind it.
- 59:51Yeah, like, you kind of want them to butt heads if only to
- 59:55see Kimu Bin, like stand tall next to this dude who thinks
- 1:00:00he's hot shit and it's funny, like just anyway.
- 1:00:06And then he like, busts him for drunk driving.
- 1:00:08Like he's a mess. Like, guy is a mess anyway.
- 1:00:13But the T the tease thing, I had a real hiccup with that.
- 1:00:17It was everything else. About her, that she was really
- 1:00:22mysterious and kept up that mystery and didn't set any
- 1:00:26record straight, was content to like not clear any error when
- 1:00:31people were bad mouthing her and spreading rumors about her.
- 1:00:36And even though she was telling the truth about her parents,
- 1:00:40yes, they were artists, yes, they lived here, yes they did
- 1:00:43this as they own some sort of thing.
- 1:00:45All of these individual things were true at one point in her
- 1:00:49life. Everyone took it to mean she's
- 1:00:53telling three different separate stories.
- 1:00:55She's lying to all of us because all of these three things can be
- 1:00:59true. And I also thought the villagers
- 1:01:01were just. So I guess this goes into like
- 1:01:04the village as a whole was so simple minded, right?
- 1:01:09Like they can't think to themselves, hey, she just wants
- 1:01:14her privacy like she's entitled to.
- 1:01:18Like she doesn't have to share who her parents are, what her
- 1:01:22parents do, who keeps calling her all the time while she's out
- 1:01:26at sea harvesting. Like it's not your business, you
- 1:01:29know what I'm saying? Yeah, I mean, well, they set
- 1:01:32her. They, like you said, they, they
- 1:01:33wrote her a certain way, 'cause there's that one scene, I think
- 1:01:36the first time we see her, they're heading out to sea on
- 1:01:40Wubin's boat, you know, and she's waving to ugly captain and
- 1:01:44like, I love you, you know, like she's yelling to his boat and
- 1:01:47waving to. She's just waving.
- 1:01:49And super. They meet up and sit to.
- 1:01:50See him and everyone's like. Yeah, looking at her like, what
- 1:01:54is she doing? What is she doing?
- 1:01:57And then at the bar, I mean, at, at the, at the little restaurant
- 1:02:01that she helps out at too, you know, he comes in there and
- 1:02:04she's, she's a little friendly, you know, not not being
- 1:02:08scandalous or anything. That's what I need.
- 1:02:10I know I. Know but but you know, in a
- 1:02:12small town where everyone's in everyone's business they're kind
- 1:02:15of setting this up you know this is her this is her role of in.
- 1:02:19The town yeah. So, yeah, so we get this girl
- 1:02:24and I think I was on her side, even though like she has a very
- 1:02:30and I have to preface this by saying this actress, I I like
- 1:02:36her, but I don't like her, if that makes any sense.
- 1:02:41Handyman ever since 1 spring night, I'm kind of like about
- 1:02:46her because she was mean to a single dad who's a very
- 1:02:50precious, like kind soft hearted person and she's being really
- 1:02:56wishy washy with that with that character.
- 1:02:58And I was like, why? Why is she giving this guy the
- 1:03:02run around? And so I dropped that show
- 1:03:05because of her, the way she played that that character in
- 1:03:07particular was so grinding. And I've never recovered from
- 1:03:13from that character. And this character that she
- 1:03:18plays in our Blues is more of that side of Hunji Min, right,
- 1:03:23where she is a slippery character, right?
- 1:03:28You kind of can't get a read on her sometimes.
- 1:03:32And that that aspect of her, it kind of spirals into this
- 1:03:39relationship that she this really fraught relationship that
- 1:03:42she has with her twin sister, the sister with Down syndrome.
- 1:03:49And it was at this point that I thought this story got way more
- 1:03:54complex in a way that no other K drama I've seen has done, where
- 1:04:00you have a, first of all, an actress with downs.
- 1:04:05Yeah. And even the younger version,
- 1:04:08like, they had some flashbacks and stuff.
- 1:04:09And even the younger version of that sister was another actress,
- 1:04:15a younger actress with Downs. And I was like, this is amazing.
- 1:04:17This is so great. Very unique and groundbreaking
- 1:04:24to me. And this relationship is so
- 1:04:28complicated. I don't know if you guys have
- 1:04:32ever done any caregiving for someone who's sickly or or
- 1:04:38mentally incapacitated in any way, but I have.
- 1:04:43And so this relationship, I was like, it was like 2 halves of me
- 1:04:49pulling at each other like taffy.
- 1:04:51Did you guys like feel this way at all with this relationship?
- 1:04:55Yeah, it, I've done a little caregiving and it it's tough.
- 1:04:59It takes a toll on you in so many ways, you know,
- 1:05:01financially, physically, especially emotionally.
- 1:05:06And, you know, the idea of her being out of town, you know,
- 1:05:12while her sister is on, on the mainland is, is complicated,
- 1:05:17right? Like she needs her space, she
- 1:05:19needs to live her life. But there's this constant drain
- 1:05:23on her coming from the mainland. And yeah, it's tough.
- 1:05:27That was, it was rough. It's so well done.
- 1:05:29Like, I don't, I didn't think I would like it.
- 1:05:31You know, when they first revealed it, I was like, I don't
- 1:05:33know if this is going to go over well because you have a real
- 1:05:38act. You have a real person who's not
- 1:05:40acting necessarily in some of the things that she was going
- 1:05:44through, you know, and, and she was, she was great.
- 1:05:47And that the way they handled it was beautiful and heartbreaking
- 1:05:52and but endearing at the same time.
- 1:05:55So yeah, I got super complicated.
- 1:05:57You really felt for her at that point and it was really good.
- 1:06:01Yeah. How did you feel about it,
- 1:06:03Brandon? I thought it was, I think you
- 1:06:06mentioned it in the beginning. The, the, the story was
- 1:06:08delicately told. And you know, I can't say that I
- 1:06:12have experience being a caregiver, but I just can only
- 1:06:15imagine the amount of stress that it must weigh on you.
- 1:06:18And it kind of goes to show why Young Oak was so focused on
- 1:06:23trying to, I don't know, make as much money as she could, even
- 1:06:28though that meant she wouldn't get along with the other hanyas.
- 1:06:30It's because she has to care for her younger sister.
- 1:06:34And I thought that it was a great love story between Young
- 1:06:38Oak and Chung Jun. And one thing that I can't get
- 1:06:42out of my head was this innocent scene.
- 1:06:46I think when Chung Jun first meets her sister, I don't even
- 1:06:50think he realizes what Down syndrome even is.
- 1:06:54And so it was like a learning experience for him in a very
- 1:06:58innocent way. I thought that was great.
- 1:06:59So it was very educational as well.
- 1:07:02So overall, I thought it was a great segment.
- 1:07:05Yeah, I thought they really went there.
- 1:07:08It was really hard to watch in a lot of places, especially when
- 1:07:13she is being super harsh to her sister and you can tell that she
- 1:07:18just doesn't want to be around her.
- 1:07:19She wants almost nothing to do with her.
- 1:07:22And there is this resentment, this deep resentment there, and
- 1:07:26there's also this deep love there.
- 1:07:28And these things, these duality that's within this character was
- 1:07:32really addicting to see them unpack.
- 1:07:35She says in this I think voiceover, she says Yong Hui is
- 1:07:38special. She's especially weird.
- 1:07:40She's especially ugly and she especially makes my life
- 1:07:43miserable. And I was like, we can stop
- 1:07:48right now. Like that's it is really cruel.
- 1:07:53I think the the storyline plays out really in terms of cruelty.
- 1:07:58And do you understand the cruelty?
- 1:08:01Like, can you understand where she's coming from?
- 1:08:04Yeah. And.
- 1:08:05Yeah, there's no winners in this.
- 1:08:07There's no it's like a serial sum game.
- 1:08:09This storyline especially, well, all of them like true, truly.
- 1:08:15She's tries to break up with Kim Woobin.
- 1:08:19He won't have it. He's taken aback by the by the
- 1:08:22twin with downs. He says yes, no hesitation when
- 1:08:27she reveals that they're orphans.
- 1:08:29They lost their parents when they were 12 years old.
- 1:08:31That's a strike against them in Korean society.
- 1:08:34There's a stigma around orphans. And then she throws it in his
- 1:08:40face. She'll have to care for her, for
- 1:08:42her sister for the rest of her life.
- 1:08:44And that is a really sad, brutal reality that she has this person
- 1:08:50that has to, she has to care for them.
- 1:08:53They're family, They're all they have.
- 1:08:56And it's super sweet of him. But I understand where she's
- 1:08:59coming from when she tries to break up with him, when she's
- 1:09:02like, why don't you just save yourself?
- 1:09:03Like you don't understand what the gravity of it is.
- 1:09:08This is a lifelong commitment. You're not just committing to
- 1:09:11me, you're committing to the both of us.
- 1:09:14Like you, we are a package deal. And I think the show really gets
- 1:09:20across the burden of being a caregiver, the sacrifice of
- 1:09:24giving up your life, the expense of living for someone else.
- 1:09:29That is not just monetary. It's time, it's energy, it's
- 1:09:34mental load, and in this case, the threat of becoming a social
- 1:09:38pariah because they start going in public, the three of them,
- 1:09:43and it is a shit show. They get stares, there's
- 1:09:46rudeness, people are inconsiderate, and society at
- 1:09:49large is cruel. You have a child that's like
- 1:09:51actively making fun of the sister in public and the parents
- 1:09:55are unconcerned about correcting that behavior and apologizing
- 1:10:01for on behalf of their child. And that is really jarring to
- 1:10:08see in the show. And I don't think that it's
- 1:10:12necessarily far off the mark, you know what I'm saying?
- 1:10:15For. It's realistic.
- 1:10:16Yeah, yeah, yeah. Korea society.
- 1:10:18So that was really tough. It's a tough.
- 1:10:22They're holding up a big mirror to Korean society and they're
- 1:10:25saying look at what what this is and it's provocative.
- 1:10:31Later on. I think the sister of the Peno
- 1:10:36has, like, a little hissy fit at the house later when the sister
- 1:10:41is outside drawing in the cold, It's freezing outside, and she's
- 1:10:46drawing outside. No one knows how to act around
- 1:10:50people with disabilities, how to treat them with dignity because
- 1:10:53they are so removed from society.
- 1:10:56And she says this, they're sent to care facilities instead of
- 1:10:59being cared for at home. And if they're with family,
- 1:11:01they're clearly a burden. And any public outbursts are a
- 1:11:05shameful embarrassment that draws the attention of a society
- 1:11:08that has no compassion. There is no ADA compliance in
- 1:11:11Korea. There is, you know, no laws
- 1:11:16prohibiting discrimination of people with disabilities in
- 1:11:20Korea. This is a serious thing.
- 1:11:24You know what I'm saying? Almost feeling like it's
- 1:11:28sanctioned. And she is devastated and at the
- 1:11:32same time really angry at the whole situation.
- 1:11:36And despite people with downs having developmental delays and
- 1:11:41and intellectual disability, they have high emotional
- 1:11:44intelligence. And so the sister is outside and
- 1:11:46she understands everything. She is crying because she knows
- 1:11:53what the sister is saying. She hears her and she completely
- 1:11:57understands that her sister borderline hates her.
- 1:12:01And this whole thing, I mean, it's rough, man.
- 1:12:05It's so rough, that whole thing, unbelievable, unbelievable.
- 1:12:11The end of that storyline when she sees all of the hand drawn
- 1:12:14portraits, the whole thing of the sister saying like, you
- 1:12:18can't draw, you're not an artist, I don't know why you're
- 1:12:20doing this. And then she sees the obscene
- 1:12:23amount of of art that she has created while she was in Cheju
- 1:12:29for that week and she. They did it really well, you
- 1:12:33know, like she doesn't, she doesn't come across as like, you
- 1:12:36know, an amazing, amazing artist.
- 1:12:39But the drawings she did are so endearing and you know, they're
- 1:12:45they're beautiful and they they capture more than just the
- 1:12:48accuracy of of what these people look like.
- 1:12:51She captures the heart. And I thought they did that
- 1:12:54really good. Like whoever was the actual
- 1:12:56artist who did all these, like they did a really good.
- 1:12:59Job, I can tell you who the actual artist was.
- 1:13:01It was the actress Jungle who plays the sister with dance Yung
- 1:13:05Hui. Oh, really?
- 1:13:07Yeah, all hand drawn portraits that were displayed in episode
- 1:13:1015 were sketched by Jung. Oh wow.
- 1:13:13Her Wow. Yeah, the actual artist.
- 1:13:16The actual actress, I should say.
- 1:13:18Yeah, no, I mean, 'cause it can't, it came out across as
- 1:13:21really good, you know, 'cause I was like, I was wondering, you
- 1:13:24know, was she gonna be super amazing, you know, like, like.
- 1:13:27Really. Detailed, but they the way they
- 1:13:30did it, they were simple. But yeah, so that's perfect.
- 1:13:33That's perfect. So that was another storyline.
- 1:13:38What were other storylines that you guys wanted to bring up?
- 1:13:42I think we maybe want to leave the Ibiungun one for the one
- 1:13:46with him and his mom, I guess for last maybe.
- 1:13:48But what were the other other ones that you guys want to bring
- 1:13:52up? Some some that I really
- 1:13:55appreciated. So the little girl and I, I, I,
- 1:14:00I'm blinking on her name. Maybe I can find it.
- 1:14:02Oh, Ungi her her father is a childhood friend to the village
- 1:14:08and he is getting surgery. And so they all climb to the top
- 1:14:12of the mountain the the 1000 moons and they get all the
- 1:14:15sailors. I thought that was one of the
- 1:14:18most. Oh my God.
- 1:14:19Heartwarming scenes ever. It made Jenny cry so much.
- 1:14:24And then my personal favorite storyline for this show is the
- 1:14:27the not just the teen pregnancy, but then also their father's
- 1:14:32relationship. So then for I that that was my
- 1:14:35my favorite storyline of the show.
- 1:14:38Mm hmm. What was What made it your
- 1:14:39favorite? Well, it's definitely a topic
- 1:14:43that we casually don't see teen pregnancy in in Kane dramas.
- 1:14:46And I just thought they truly captured how realistic and how
- 1:14:54how accurate they depicted how people would make decisions in
- 1:14:57those in that situation. So do we, do we try to get the
- 1:15:02abortion or, or I can, or hey, we can do it.
- 1:15:05We can raise the kid or can we? Can we?
- 1:15:07Not them telling their parents. I thought like those two scenes
- 1:15:12in that night. It was amazing.
- 1:15:15Amazing in the sense that that is exactly how most Korean
- 1:15:19parents would react. If I told my father, I'm sure it
- 1:15:23would have been the exact same situation as that young kid.
- 1:15:28Same for the daughter. And so I just felt like this was
- 1:15:32the realist depiction for such a harsh topic.
- 1:15:35And they did it on AK drama. They weren't afraid to really go
- 1:15:38there. And I appreciated that.
- 1:15:40And not to like generalize, but I remember like me, my mom, all
- 1:15:45all my friends who are Korean, we're watching this show.
- 1:15:49When we got to this segment of episodes, everyone was like, Oh
- 1:15:54my God, these episodes were amazing.
- 1:15:56Like everyone has to go watch our Blues like the storyline
- 1:16:00before. And we already mentioned like
- 1:16:02the first three episodes and then kind of the love line was
- 1:16:04building. So up until that point, it was a
- 1:16:07decent show. We weren't sure how crazy it was
- 1:16:09going to go, but when it got then you.
- 1:16:11Hit like episode 5 and that's when you hit the teen teen
- 1:16:16pregnancy and you're like, yeah, you don't know where to look.
- 1:16:19You're just like, Oh my God. Right.
- 1:16:21And so Curtis, you mentioned your, I think you mentioned that
- 1:16:25Kimubin's love line was your second favorite, is that right?
- 1:16:29Yeah, yeah. So my favorite love line was the
- 1:16:33two kids. OK, OK.
- 1:16:35Oh. That's so cute.
- 1:16:38Oh. Yeah.
- 1:16:40I love. Them, the dads are amazing, the
- 1:16:42dads, you know, the, the characterizations of the dads,
- 1:16:47they just went with it. They're so committed to who they
- 1:16:49are playing, the actors and the you just the, when the kids are
- 1:16:54like, well, if I tell my dad, he's going to cry for days.
- 1:16:57And if I tell my dad, he's going to break a lot of things, you
- 1:17:00know, and, and then it exactly plays out exactly that way they
- 1:17:03thought it would because they knew their their dads so well
- 1:17:06and their dads are well known in the community for being those
- 1:17:08things too. And it's just the whole town was
- 1:17:12feeling what they were feeling and it and then just their beef
- 1:17:15that goes back 20 years. It was it was so well done.
- 1:17:20Yeah. The beef.
- 1:17:23The beef killed me. So I agree completely that the
- 1:17:27teen pregnancy was surprising and well done.
- 1:17:32And again, another taboo subject, right?
- 1:17:36It was very emotional cheese. I I was caught up from the very
- 1:17:42like she goes to the an OBGYN who was awful and condescending
- 1:17:47to her. He tells her it's your fault for
- 1:17:49not using contraception and like they're the condom failed or
- 1:17:52something like that. And so they did use
- 1:17:54contraception. It was like she she was gagged
- 1:17:57like by this doctor and it's super frustrating to see her in
- 1:18:04that environment. I don't know if you ever you've
- 1:18:06ever had someone in your life tell you horror stories about an
- 1:18:09OBGYN and they're like, I don't never want to see that person
- 1:18:12again. But like, honestly, I, I've
- 1:18:15experienced something similar to this, not with a pregnancy,
- 1:18:18thank God, but like with, you know, just a regular visit where
- 1:18:23I'm like, I hate that doctor. I need to report that doctor to
- 1:18:26look bored. And this was tough to watch,
- 1:18:31especially because it's a teenager.
- 1:18:33They're helpless. She's helpless, right?
- 1:18:35Like she doesn't have a guardian with her.
- 1:18:36She doesn't have any person to advocate for her.
- 1:18:40She's never gone to an OBGYN before and he's out here telling
- 1:18:44her telling her things like all you teenagers are the same.
- 1:18:47When she suspects she's she tells the doctor, I think I'm
- 1:18:50three weeks, 3 months pregnant and she's actually 22 weeks
- 1:18:53pregnant, which is 6 months. So she's been pregnant for six
- 1:18:57months, twice the amount of time she thought she was.
- 1:19:00He demands that she get parental consent and they, I think I've
- 1:19:03misread the subtitles, but she was, I think she said earlier
- 1:19:08that it's not needed by law anymore, but the doctor was
- 1:19:11being a Dick basically and saying like, you know, you need
- 1:19:13parental consent or whatever. It was like this whole like shit
- 1:19:17show. So ever since that doctor's
- 1:19:20visit, I was like, this is going downhill fast, you know what I'm
- 1:19:25saying? And then we get the beef between
- 1:19:27the dads and I mean, it was bad like the IT culminates in this
- 1:19:33jail cell. To me it culminates when they
- 1:19:36get arrested together. For fighting each other, it's.
- 1:19:40For fighting, Yeah. And he said her dad tells his
- 1:19:45dad, how did it feel to get beaten by her son?
- 1:19:49He says that's how he felt the night that he went to him in
- 1:19:53desperate need and said I need, I need money.
- 1:19:58Like my child is hungry. My wife has left me.
- 1:20:01And he called him a dirt poor loser.
- 1:20:05Yeah, and and he said that that's fine.
- 1:20:08He goes. Yeah, I know I was, but you just
- 1:20:10don't do that in front of my daughter.
- 1:20:12You. Know you don't do that in front
- 1:20:13of my daughter. And he called him a dirt poor
- 1:20:16loser and made his daughter beg for money.
- 1:20:19Yeah. And he was cruel and degrading
- 1:20:23when he was most vulnerable. And he went to him because he
- 1:20:27was the only friend he could rely on.
- 1:20:29He was all he had and that is to go to someone with all of your
- 1:20:34heart and for them to like to humiliate you.
- 1:20:38That is what stuck that that is the beef that stuck.
- 1:20:43And so to see that play out and to see how the kids were just
- 1:20:49pummeled by the the two dads in various ways, emotionally and
- 1:20:54physically. I mean, it was bad.
- 1:20:56But then the reconciliation was was like sad and beautiful.
- 1:21:03Yeah, and realistic to a point. You know, where it didn't, it
- 1:21:07didn't happen over one, one episode.
- 1:21:10You know, it did took some time. And yeah, there, there needed to
- 1:21:15there, there needed to be a lot of steps in between.
- 1:21:17But the the arc was great. Yeah.
- 1:21:19I thought the arc was really great.
- 1:21:22Demanding apologies for things like he like he said shit about
- 1:21:26his daughter that she was sleeping around and she was like
- 1:21:30he dragged her out of the hotel, the motel room at one point and.
- 1:21:35Yeah, that's. Literally take her to the
- 1:21:37hospital to get an abortion. It was like wildness, wildness.
- 1:21:42So that whole thing was was great.
- 1:21:44I had this moment ingrained into my brain was episode 6 when the
- 1:21:50the two kids decide to keep the baby and they said promise.
- 1:21:56She said, promise me you won't change.
- 1:21:58And it starts raining on them. She covers her, her tummy like
- 1:22:04it starts to rain and she's like this covering her forehead.
- 1:22:06And then she's changes and covers her little tummy.
- 1:22:11And then he comes over and like covers her and I Oh my God, it
- 1:22:14was so adorable. Do you remember this moment?
- 1:22:19No. I don't actually.
- 1:22:21No, then they start kissing in the street and that's when Ani
- 1:22:24drives by in her truck and she sees them and she's like, what
- 1:22:28the fuck is going on? Like she's like, didn't know
- 1:22:31they were dating. Anyway, all this stuff, these
- 1:22:36set of episodes were really, again, super powerful.
- 1:22:40Curtis, what was your number one?
- 1:22:42Then what was your number one? OK, so my number one was the
- 1:22:46Shimena. I I thought, you know the Dong
- 1:22:50suck and sauna that one, it spans what at least 1520 years
- 1:22:57goes back to when they were kids and they had nothing but each
- 1:23:01other and they were just drowning in misery.
- 1:23:04But they had each other for a week or two.
- 1:23:07It wasn't even that long of a time.
- 1:23:09But it just, they, the, IT started there where they of
- 1:23:13course they loved each other, but they kind of got separated
- 1:23:15and didn't see each other for 15 years or something like that.
- 1:23:18And they met randomly on Seoul, at Seoul or in Seoul.
- 1:23:23And then that lasted a month or so and they were just hanging
- 1:23:28out and having fun. But then she, she dumps them on
- 1:23:30the beach when he tries to kiss. He's the worst.
- 1:23:33He has the worst timing ever of when to kiss someone, but he
- 1:23:37tries to kiss her on the beach and she's like, OK, Take Me
- 1:23:41Home. I'm done.
- 1:23:42And he's like, well, what what I do, what I do.
- 1:23:45And then they meet up later in life and he's super mad about
- 1:23:48everything, but mad about her too.
- 1:23:51And then they slowly and then so in your notes, you have, you
- 1:23:56know, what's your favorite scene?
- 1:23:57The, the way they portrayed her depression of just symbolically,
- 1:24:03everything gets dark for her and she's drowning, you know, in
- 1:24:08those moments, just covered in water and, and emotionally
- 1:24:13drowning, maybe even physically drowning and dying.
- 1:24:16She's literally dying or figuratively dying.
- 1:24:20And he gives her a little light. You know, like that, that stupid
- 1:24:24little soundtrack he does on the island that that's my favorite
- 1:24:27scene where he said, here's something to, to make you laugh.
- 1:24:30And he sends it to her and, and it's not again, it's not like
- 1:24:34fairy tale where it's like, oh, everything's, everything's
- 1:24:37cured. He sent me this crazy little
- 1:24:39tape and now I'm cured from depression.
- 1:24:41But it wasn't like that. It was a slow burn where she's
- 1:24:45coming out of it and it's just the and and it didn't even end
- 1:24:50where it was, you know, wedding bells or anything necessarily.
- 1:24:53Like she's still digging herself out of her hole, right.
- 1:24:56And he's, he's got some issues too, got a ton of issues too to
- 1:25:00dig out from. But they, they've had each other
- 1:25:03for a couple decades and then they kind of meet up again when
- 1:25:08they need each other most. And it kind of works for me.
- 1:25:11I, I really like that I picked that as my number one romance
- 1:25:14when we did our Valentine's show.
- 1:25:16Jess, where you, you submitted your answer to that was mine,
- 1:25:20that I picked this, this romance as the Oh yeah, Brandon, you
- 1:25:23were on that episode too. But yeah, this is the one I
- 1:25:27picked for my it. It's it's a really ugly, messy
- 1:25:31relationship, but I I really like the way they did it.
- 1:25:34Yeah, this relationship is pretty different than a standard
- 1:25:39romance, right, where you have a lot of time in between when they
- 1:25:44were kids and they were each other's first loves.
- 1:25:47And she has a really bad home life.
- 1:25:50He has a horrible home life as well.
- 1:25:53And they kind of find each other in the madness and they are each
- 1:25:59other's safe haven. And then she leaves.
- 1:26:02Like she just, it's just the one that got away, you know what I'm
- 1:26:04saying? And the moment that I remember
- 1:26:09seeing on TikTok after I had already decided to watch Our
- 1:26:12Blues was in episode 4. The episode starts, it's not
- 1:26:17about the episode is not about Dong Sok or Shin Mina's
- 1:26:21character, but it starts with Shin Mina.
- 1:26:24And I was like whoa, this scene of her and intro ING her
- 1:26:29depression and her husband being completely over it.
- 1:26:37Exasperated with her. He screams at her to go to the
- 1:26:39hospital to get treatment and they say depression can be
- 1:26:44cured. He complaints about the laundry
- 1:26:47and the cleaning of the state of the house.
- 1:26:50She counters why doesn't he do it himself?
- 1:26:53Why does she have to do all the household chores?
- 1:26:55He fires back. She wants him to work and do all
- 1:26:58the housework. My blood was boiling like this
- 1:27:02scene and then particularly the part where he says she reeks,
- 1:27:08that she stinks. And the passage of time thing,
- 1:27:14we're just time is this amorphous thing to her.
- 1:27:17She's unreachable and she didn't.
- 1:27:20She thinks that it's still the morning and it's actually the
- 1:27:24evening and she didn't pick up her kid from preschool.
- 1:27:26It's the middle of the night. It is a sucker punch, this
- 1:27:31introduction to Shimena, and then poof, we don't see her or
- 1:27:36hear from her for several episodes as we go into other
- 1:27:40storylines and the pregnancy, the teen pregnancy and things
- 1:27:44like that crop up. Shimena did an incredible job, I
- 1:27:49thought, playing this character and playing a character who
- 1:27:57loves her son. Right, like the Depression, she
- 1:28:00doesn't take away the fact that she loves her son and wants to
- 1:28:06provide for her son and be there.
- 1:28:09It is impeding her ability to do that.
- 1:28:14And her husband is like the worst.
- 1:28:20I, like, couldn't get over the fact that he was so, so cold
- 1:28:29toward her and almost, like, wouldn't pick up the slack, you
- 1:28:33know what I'm saying? Like, if she's struggling and
- 1:28:36she's at 10%, OK, you got to do 90, you know what I'm saying?
- 1:28:41Like, that's all there is to it. Yeah.
- 1:28:45But, you know, it's pretty realistic, though.
- 1:28:47Honestly, I-20 you got to do 80 like I sorry, like that's how
- 1:28:51life works. So he just was not willing to, I
- 1:28:55don't know how. How did you?
- 1:28:57If I was to play devil's advocate, because Jenny and I
- 1:29:01talked about this a lot and we have some experience with
- 1:29:04depression and anxiety disorder, one thing that the show doesn't
- 1:29:09clarify for us is how long she has been in that state of
- 1:29:13depression. And so I want to be, I, I try to
- 1:29:17be sympathetic to the husband's character if this had happened,
- 1:29:22you know, initially and he just wasn't willing to pitch in.
- 1:29:25Totally understand he's being unhelpful.
- 1:29:28But they're obviously parents to this young child.
- 1:29:32And what happens when it goes six months, one year, you know,
- 1:29:35two years? And he does make the comment,
- 1:29:37like, can you at least go get treatment?
- 1:29:39So it seems like she wasn't taking the necessary steps to
- 1:29:43get better, at least how that's how I took it.
- 1:29:46And so I kind of understood his frustrations.
- 1:29:51If you're not going to pick up, if you told me you're going to
- 1:29:53pick up the kid and you did it, like now you're putting our son
- 1:29:57in danger. And I'm obviously happy that she
- 1:30:00goes on her mental health journey and she goes to the
- 1:30:03countryside and, and finds her shine her her light, as you
- 1:30:07mentioned, Curtis and Yi Byung on.
- 1:30:09But you know, she also had to have been a, a, a parent to her
- 1:30:15son. And I think the dad was thinking
- 1:30:17for the sun's safety first, so I I wanted to just give him a
- 1:30:22little bit of slack when I watched the.
- 1:30:25Show and I think there were two things that didn't let me take
- 1:30:28my foot off his neck. So the one thing was he knew.
- 1:30:33Sorry, maybe there's a better way to say that.
- 1:30:34But one thing was he knew about her depression from the jump
- 1:30:40before he even married her when they were dating, he knew knew
- 1:30:44about her depression. That's true.
- 1:30:46And I don't know if that played into their breakup initially,
- 1:30:50because when he she met Ebogan's character however many years ago
- 1:30:54and they went joyriding, they were on the outs.
- 1:30:58They had broken up. So who knows?
- 1:31:00They don't say like why they broke up, but to me that says,
- 1:31:05OK, I'm signing up. You know, I'm for better, for
- 1:31:11worse, You know what I'm saying? Like, that is a promise and he
- 1:31:16knew it's not like it this cropped up later and he's got
- 1:31:20to, you know, adjust. And second of all, I think that
- 1:31:26what played into her losing custody was the accident, the
- 1:31:32traffic, the car accident that happened.
- 1:31:34And he blamed her for that accident.
- 1:31:36When I watch it back, I don't think she was at fault at all.
- 1:31:40Like she got cut off and ran into the car and I was like, how
- 1:31:46is that her fault that she got cut off in traffic?
- 1:31:51Like, you know what I'm saying? Like I'm like, where's where's
- 1:31:53the fault that she was like, how is this playing into like she
- 1:31:57was depressed and like ran into a car that didn't scream.
- 1:32:02She needs to lose custody because she picked up the kid.
- 1:32:05She was being responsible. The kid was strapped into the
- 1:32:08sea. If there were other
- 1:32:09circumstances, like it was a different kind of accident and
- 1:32:14she was at fault where the kid wasn't in a seat belt or
- 1:32:17something like that, like that would have signaled to me, yeah,
- 1:32:22the kid is unsafe with her. But for all intents and
- 1:32:26purposes, this was a pretty bad traffic accident that she was
- 1:32:30not at fault for. And then he takes it upon
- 1:32:33himself to initiate this really ugly custody battle.
- 1:32:36Jess, did you rewatch the episodes recently 'cause I, I, I
- 1:32:40didn't. So your memory might be better
- 1:32:42than mine on the show. So I just watched them.
- 1:32:45Wasn't there a scene where they ask the son like his opinion on
- 1:32:50the mom and the dad and I forget the answers he gives and I
- 1:32:53forget what he says about the? Mom, do you remember?
- 1:32:56He says he calls his dad. Oh, my dad's like a friend.
- 1:32:59He calls him friend and then he's they ask him his opinion on
- 1:33:05the mom and he says, oh, mom is sick.
- 1:33:10So he just thinks that she is sick, not that she is, you know,
- 1:33:15mom, she's great. Whatever.
- 1:33:17Some other verbiage that would have passed in the courts for
- 1:33:22her to get custody. Just him knowing that she was
- 1:33:26struggling was I guess a strike against her.
- 1:33:31So and what was terrible again, was during that custody battle,
- 1:33:35she the husband was bringing up. It was like us mini microcosm of
- 1:33:40marriage story. Have you seen that movie story
- 1:33:44with that ugly custody battle between Scarlett Johansson and
- 1:33:47No No. I haven't seen it about the
- 1:33:50other story, yeah. There's the other one too.
- 1:33:54Kramer versus Kramer. Yeah, so good.
- 1:33:57Right, the original. Yeah, so it's the same thing
- 1:34:00basically where it all comes out, but it's not the whole
- 1:34:04truth. So the husband and saying, oh,
- 1:34:07she didn't pick up the kid, she didn't do this, she didn't do
- 1:34:09that. And she's like, OK, I didn't
- 1:34:11pick up the kid on one day, but I pick him up 364 other days out
- 1:34:15of the year. Like I'm doing well all the
- 1:34:20other times. And I didn't play with him maybe
- 1:34:23three or four times out of the month, but I play with him all
- 1:34:26the other days, like out of the month and so on and so forth.
- 1:34:30Like all of these strikes against her are like a small
- 1:34:34percentage of the time that she is full time caregiving for her
- 1:34:39son that she is out of Commission or unable to care for
- 1:34:44him. So it was enough.
- 1:34:46Well, you know, honestly, though, I, I, I think the courts
- 1:34:51probably made the right call in this case, like just purely
- 1:34:55speaking, safety of the child. I, I think they probably made
- 1:35:01the right choice. Even though we like Shima, you
- 1:35:03know, we, we know she's going through a lot.
- 1:35:05We like her, you know, we like her character.
- 1:35:07There's obviously some room for compassion, but the bottom line
- 1:35:12is like, which parent? Which would he be more safe
- 1:35:14with? And it isn't about emotion.
- 1:35:17At that point. The court has to make a decision
- 1:35:19on the welfare of the child physically, you know, just keep
- 1:35:24the kid alive. And so they probably made the
- 1:35:27right choice, though we could all see that in the long run,
- 1:35:31you know, who's who's going to love him more?
- 1:35:33We know the mom would, but. I also thought it was funny that
- 1:35:36they were asking the dad like, OK, who's going to do this?
- 1:35:40Who's going to cure a gift while you're at work?
- 1:35:42And he's like, oh, my parents are.
- 1:35:43And they're, So she's like, OK, so you're not going to cure a
- 1:35:46gift for him. Your parent, your elderly
- 1:35:48parents are going to be raising him while you're working and
- 1:35:52who's going to pick him up from school and all this stuff.
- 1:35:54And it was never him. It was always his parents.
- 1:35:58No. But in Korean culture, that's in
- 1:36:01Korean culture, that's very, that's the standard, almost like
- 1:36:06my generation of kids, like there's AI have a lot of friends
- 1:36:10who are closer to their grandparents than their parents
- 1:36:11just because that was the all families live together and the
- 1:36:15parents help out. So I I didn't think that was
- 1:36:17that weird. That's pretty common in Korea.
- 1:36:20And and shame and I had no one. You know, she has no parents.
- 1:36:23I'm not. Saying it's weird because I got
- 1:36:25picked up every day after school for my with my grandparents.
- 1:36:28What I'm saying is if it's between aging grandparents or
- 1:36:33his mother, like you know what I'm saying?
- 1:36:36Like they were asking questions. Have to work full time though.
- 1:36:38Pointed questions about like, who is going to raise him, who
- 1:36:42is going to be caregiving? And it was not him.
- 1:36:46Yeah. So it it was hard.
- 1:36:49But they asked her too and and she didn't have anyone.
- 1:36:51She was like, I was going to. She's going to have to work full
- 1:36:53time, so someone else. I can do this and pick him up
- 1:36:56and all this stuff. So yeah, it was going to she was
- 1:36:59going to be single mom in it. Anyway, Long story short, this
- 1:37:03storyline was harsh. And then you add in the love
- 1:37:09story that she like, doesn't love him Ebiungun's character at
- 1:37:14first, but she grows to love him and need him.
- 1:37:21So I really like that. And her meeting his mom at the
- 1:37:24end, I was like, like, I was like in tears.
- 1:37:29Yeah, they just, it is written so well, you know, like it just
- 1:37:32at that moment, he has to make up with his mom just in time,
- 1:37:36just within a day, right. To to make it.
- 1:37:38Work what I liked about their relationship and especially when
- 1:37:42Thong Suk is there for when she loses custody, right?
- 1:37:46Which is devastating for any parent, I'm sure.
- 1:37:49Yeah. She sobs uncontrollably for
- 1:37:52hours, she won't eat or drink and she and he gets fed up.
- 1:37:55Like he tells her she should do her best to gird up, prepare
- 1:38:00herself for the appeal and not wallow in self pity.
- 1:38:05And she's devastated at the this horrible thought that her son
- 1:38:10might hate her and probably doesn't want to be around her
- 1:38:14etcetera. And she basically says that she
- 1:38:17just can't help it. It's how she is.
- 1:38:19And instead of criticizing her like her husband did, just leave
- 1:38:23her be, leave her to her own devices and how she processes
- 1:38:27things. He ends up asking her questions
- 1:38:31about her depression. What does it feel like?
- 1:38:34And he starts consoling her. When did it start?
- 1:38:37And she says it started when her dad committed suicide by driving
- 1:38:41himself into the ocean. Like wildness, more wildness for
- 1:38:45these back stories. It's trauma upon trauma.
- 1:38:49You could say it's generational trauma.
- 1:38:52And the next morning, he ponders more about his own circumstances
- 1:38:59and his own relationship with his mom, meaning he's wondering
- 1:39:03if his mother struggled with depression.
- 1:39:06He wonders if she ever loved him because she neglected him.
- 1:39:10And just as he told Shimena's character to just call up her
- 1:39:14son and ask him how he feels about her, Shimena tells him he
- 1:39:18should ask his mom outright. Instead of avoiding the problem
- 1:39:23and burying your worries by ignoring the person scared of
- 1:39:28what they'll say, he should talk to her.
- 1:39:31And she says she went through a whole crisis of hating her
- 1:39:34father, wondering why he never said that he was having a hard
- 1:39:38time, wondering if he loved her at all.
- 1:39:41And she concluded that he did love her, but life is just
- 1:39:47terrible and it beat him down. And then she felt guilty for
- 1:39:51seeing him Rage Against life, being a violent alcoholic and
- 1:39:55never asking him what was wrong, why was he so mad or sad.
- 1:40:01And she tells him to talk to his mom or risk living in regret.
- 1:40:05That you could have done more, said more, probed more so.
- 1:40:10That circles back. That's like an earlier episode.
- 1:40:13Then we hit episodes like 18/19/20 and this circles back
- 1:40:19around right with his relationship with his mom and
- 1:40:23him finally asking some tough questions to her.
- 1:40:29And I guess we can wrap, we can wrap up with this story.
- 1:40:34Is that does that sound good? I think so.
- 1:40:37The last storyline that we're going to talk about is Thong
- 1:40:39suck with his mother. And I mean, this relationship
- 1:40:44and these set of episodes is tough because you, I mean, I
- 1:40:50keep saying it's tough, but I felt.
- 1:40:53Look the mom. Is so freaking detached and
- 1:40:58disassociated like she's just spaced out.
- 1:41:01And I thought I kept thinking like maybe she has something
- 1:41:04like maybe he's right like maybe she has some sort of mental
- 1:41:06illness that she's struggling with.
- 1:41:09And I could never like put my finger on it.
- 1:41:12I was like, she's the way she is looking around like I was, I was
- 1:41:18like, where is she? She's not there.
- 1:41:20Like I couldn't figure it out, couldn't get past it because the
- 1:41:25flashbacks were so visceral. We're super visceral of her
- 1:41:31slapping him multiple times because she needs she he he
- 1:41:34needs to call her aunt instead of mother and her getting
- 1:41:36married within a month of the husband dying and all this stuff
- 1:41:41like it's. Or not even married, right?
- 1:41:43Just. Becoming a YEAH and taking care
- 1:41:45of care of a sickly woman for 515 years, the wife for 15
- 1:41:51years. I was livid for him and I could
- 1:41:55see why he was so angry. Yeah.
- 1:41:59No, it's it's. So rough, it's so rough.
- 1:42:03So how did you guys feel about this and did you guys have
- 1:42:06thoughts on the mom and his reaction to her and the final
- 1:42:12moments with him and the trip that they take?
- 1:42:15Well, yeah, I mean, she, she comes across as so frail and so
- 1:42:19weak. And everyone's like, why are
- 1:42:20you? Why are you so mean to her?
- 1:42:22You know, why don't you take care of her?
- 1:42:24She look at her, she's so little.
- 1:42:26And then you find out why. And it's like, oh, it's, it's,
- 1:42:31it's, yeah, there's layers upon layers in this drama.
- 1:42:34And they do a good job of. And like, again, there's no
- 1:42:37winners. You know, it's just like, yeah,
- 1:42:39you're not totally wrong to hate this person, but you know, you
- 1:42:43gotta do what you need to do sometimes to, to mend these
- 1:42:47relationships. So.
- 1:42:49There's a shit show that happens in Mokpo because they go to the
- 1:42:51step dads memorial service. I was like going like this, like
- 1:42:57I wanted to flip a table and I wanted to not go to that
- 1:43:02memorial service as much as he did or did not want to go
- 1:43:05because why the fuck would he? Would you want to go to that
- 1:43:09guy's memorial service and see the brothers again?
- 1:43:12And it ended up being even let like only one brother was there
- 1:43:16was that brother was there. None of the grandkids, step
- 1:43:20grandkids were there even. And yeah, EB Young's character
- 1:43:25is indignant. He's crass.
- 1:43:27It ignites this fight between him and the abusive stepbrother
- 1:43:30who beat him to bits when they were younger.
- 1:43:33And the and the mom comes through.
- 1:43:36Actually says. Shame him.
- 1:43:38Finally. Finally.
- 1:43:41Finally that he because the stepbrother starts blaming him
- 1:43:46for the death of the dad. And I was like, whoa, whoa,
- 1:43:48whoa, whoa. Then the mom comes through.
- 1:43:51Yeah, the dad was a knuck. 30 years too late.
- 1:43:54She's defending him and saying no, your dad was an alcoholic
- 1:43:59who got drunk and hurt himself after you sold off his boats and
- 1:44:03basically lost his fortune. Wasn't we're in the process of
- 1:44:07losing his fortune? Not that measly $20,000 that my
- 1:44:13son stole that had nothing to do with why he ended up basically
- 1:44:18bedridden for the rest of his life or something and died.
- 1:44:22So the mom sticks up for him and sets things straight with facts
- 1:44:26and tells the fan that there's nothing her son should be
- 1:44:29apologizing for. And she's super agitated all of
- 1:44:33a sudden because she's so passive the rest of the show.
- 1:44:37And you're so surprised. You're thinking at this point
- 1:44:40you're thinking we're going to get some more When he confronts
- 1:44:42her and our starts asking her shit, she's going to apologize
- 1:44:46or she's going to say something really profound.
- 1:44:50Brandon and Curtis when he asked her why didn't you ever
- 1:44:56apologize to me? It seemed like you were aware of
- 1:44:59how difficult my life was because of you.
- 1:45:02Do you even feel sorry? Do you really feel sorry about
- 1:45:06how you mistreated me and hurt me?
- 1:45:09She says Why should I feel sorry about you?
- 1:45:16And I nearly shut off the TVI was like, Oh no, no, no, no, no,
- 1:45:21we're back to square one. We're back to square one.
- 1:45:23Because I genuinely still can't understand why she wouldn't
- 1:45:29apologize. He's asking for it.
- 1:45:32He's confronting her directly and she's still like, I can't
- 1:45:38think of anything I need to apologize for.
- 1:45:40She just said all that shit in front of those people.
- 1:45:45It was mind boggling. It was mind boggling to me.
- 1:45:49It was bothering me. I think maybe, maybe in her mind
- 1:45:54she's like, well, I kept you alive.
- 1:45:56Look, you're still alive. You know, a bare minimum of
- 1:46:00mothering is keep your kid from dying.
- 1:46:03And she did that. I think that's right, Curtis.
- 1:46:07And, you know, not everyone becomes a mother by because they
- 1:46:10want to for some people it it that that's the the cards that
- 1:46:15they're dealt. And she, I think you mentioned
- 1:46:18this earlier, Curtis, she did what she had to do to get
- 1:46:22herself by and make sure that her son had a roof over his
- 1:46:27head. Yes, I'm sure it hurt her.
- 1:46:29Maybe, maybe not seeing her kid get beat, but at least he got
- 1:46:33some meals, you know, had a house and and she is not
- 1:46:39educated, right. I don't think she even went to
- 1:46:42school. So honestly, how can you really,
- 1:46:46you know, she she did what she could.
- 1:46:48I think. I, I thought that was a really
- 1:46:50raw moment because between IB Young on and the mom, they're
- 1:46:55saying, I don't owe you any apologies.
- 1:46:58But externally she still defended him against the
- 1:47:02brothers, which I thought was nice.
- 1:47:04I was confused because she still has this feels this pull toward
- 1:47:10this family that did not appreciate her, did not love
- 1:47:15her, treated her like shit, treated her son even worse.
- 1:47:19And she's still like, let me go over there and run this memorial
- 1:47:23service and bring them food and go to their weddings and and I
- 1:47:27was like, she treated that family so well.
- 1:47:32And in my mind, I'm like for what?
- 1:47:35Like to what end? Like there was nothing there, no
- 1:47:39blood like there, You know what I'm saying?
- 1:47:42Like I was confused about their sure loyalty to them and her
- 1:47:47lack of loyalty to her son. And absolutely I felt way less
- 1:47:54angry at her when you put it in perspective that she was a
- 1:47:58simpleton. She had no education, she was
- 1:48:00illiterate, literally into her. She was imminently dying of
- 1:48:04cancer and she was still learning her AB CS, very
- 1:48:08infantile of a personality. And she had this survivalist
- 1:48:11mentality where she was just like, I just need to eat.
- 1:48:15I just need a roof over my head. I just need this.
- 1:48:17I just need that. And despite all that, I was
- 1:48:21like, OK, but now he's an adult. You don't need to do shit for
- 1:48:26him. And he is.
- 1:48:28You know he's hurt. He went no contact for years.
- 1:48:32You know he's hurt. That's your blood, Sun.
- 1:48:37Why would you not say I'm sorry like I did the best I could?
- 1:48:43Yeah. I know.
- 1:48:46She's just said why would I feel like it was such the wording as
- 1:48:50well? Like I'm sure it was a
- 1:48:52translation but I was like, this is the worst thing you could
- 1:48:55possibly say. Yeah.
- 1:48:57As well, so it was a lot of things at play.
- 1:49:02Yeah, unless there, unless her, her unless her long game was OK,
- 1:49:06let me show up at this memorial service and finally tell these
- 1:49:08people off in front of my son. Unless that was her long game,
- 1:49:11which I don't know if that was. I mean, it worked out that
- 1:49:15that's how it turned out. But yeah, I don't know why she
- 1:49:18would it. Literally made no sense to me.
- 1:49:20OK, anyway, well. I think Korea is just very big
- 1:49:24on tradition, especially when it, you know, there is the the
- 1:49:31mothers doing air quotes, you know, responsibilities.
- 1:49:34And I think there's also a concept in Korea called Chung.
- 1:49:38It just means that when you've spent enough time with someone,
- 1:49:42even if you're not related, you just develop some type of bond.
- 1:49:46And so my thought was she just spent so many years with this
- 1:49:50family and she was technically the, the matriarch, I guess of
- 1:49:57that immediate family. You know, she still needed to do
- 1:49:59her, her duties every year. And so I, I didn't think too
- 1:50:05much of that to be honest. OK, Yeah, I don't think I've
- 1:50:09spoken about Chung. Maybe in the My Mr. episode
- 1:50:12Chung came up, but yeah, I again, this is the level one of
- 1:50:19Chung versus level 10. Maybe because there I they hated
- 1:50:24her like they they were like, why are you here?
- 1:50:27Why did you call like, Oh my God, it was the worst.
- 1:50:31It was the worst. I she was so unloved and then
- 1:50:35she still went back to it was like bad habit.
- 1:50:38It was like a bad habit. Anyway, she dies.
- 1:50:42It is awful. The no music when she passes was
- 1:50:46a powerful choice to me. And then he decides to lie next
- 1:50:50to her and hugs her body and cries and calls her mom over and
- 1:50:53over again. Something that he refused to do
- 1:50:55throughout the show was call her mom.
- 1:51:00And the voiceover just like is like a nice little bow.
- 1:51:04Wraps it up real nicely. She never said she loved me or
- 1:51:07that she was sorry. My mom, Kangak Song, made a bowl
- 1:51:10of my favorite food, Donjiang soup, a Sue.
- 1:51:14Then she returned to where she used to be.
- 1:51:16I hugged my dead mom's body and cried.
- 1:51:19That's when I realized something.
- 1:51:21I had never resented her my entire life.
- 1:51:23I just wanted to embrace and reconcile with her.
- 1:51:26I just wanted to hug her for a very long time and cry as much
- 1:51:30as I wanted. And I was like, he just wanted
- 1:51:33his mom. And she was always like, I'm not
- 1:51:35your mom. I'm your aunt.
- 1:51:36And I'm like, we're not going to unpack this like this.
- 1:51:40You know what I'm saying? Like.
- 1:51:42She. Wanted it, but didn't want it.
- 1:51:45Yeah, well, so he's got, he's got time.
- 1:51:49He was. He's heartbreaking faggot.
- 1:51:52The next heartbreaking 70 years. Anyway, I love the show and I'm
- 1:51:57so glad that both of you love the show and we're into doing
- 1:52:01this episode with me and covering, I think most of the
- 1:52:05storylines, if not, no, I think a couple of them were left off,
- 1:52:08but that's fine. We did pretty.
- 1:52:10Good. I think we did pretty good.
- 1:52:12Yeah, we did most of that. Two hours later, but.
- 1:52:15That's fine. Thanks, Lee.
- 1:52:17If listeners, if you're still listening, thanks for sticking
- 1:52:19it out man. We appreciate it.
- 1:52:21Do you guys? So real quick the storyline that
- 1:52:23I hate, I've not hated, but that I disliked the most was actually
- 1:52:28the umjong and unis storyline. I thought that one was the
- 1:52:31weakest but I'm curious like which one did you guys like the
- 1:52:34least? So that one hit me like a ton of
- 1:52:37bricks because I was the unni in a relationship when I was
- 1:52:41growing up and I had a friend who looked like Pocahontas and
- 1:52:47she was the in the relationship and it it hit me like a ton of
- 1:52:53bricks. I I felt deeply for that
- 1:52:56relationship. So it's personal to you.
- 1:52:58Yeah, so I. I mean, it wasn't bad, but it
- 1:53:02yeah, it wasn't this, no. Compared to everything, you're
- 1:53:04kind of like, but yeah, it's deep.
- 1:53:06It was deep and it's real for for me, maybe for a lot of
- 1:53:09people. But yeah.
- 1:53:11So thank you guys again for coming on and for coming on for
- 1:53:15a really long time to talk about this show.
