Transcript
- 0:00He is racing royalty in the Saint Louis area.
- 0:04He competed in 905 races in NASCAR's top three divisions.
- 0:12What a career for Kenny Wallace, and it'll be punctuated very
- 0:17shortly by going into the Missouri Sports Hall of Fame.
- 0:21He joins us now. Kenny, first of all,
- 0:23congratulations. How did you get the news and
- 0:26what does this one mean to you? Well, hello, my friend.
- 0:31First of all, thanks for having me on your show.
- 0:35Yeah, I got. I got the phone call from the
- 0:37hall and it was it was so strange because you know, I I've
- 0:42always been the third brother, you know, my my great brother
- 0:44Rusty Wallace, my brother Mike. And I'm the youngest and I've
- 0:48always, you know, had a little fun chip on my shoulder.
- 0:52I'm the third child, you know I'm not supposed to be going
- 0:55into the hall, but. We did a lot and they called me
- 1:00up and it was very emotional. Got some goosebumps, shed a
- 1:06tear. It's really weird, Frank, when
- 1:08when something like that happened, you overcome with
- 1:12emotionally and you're like, why am I so emotion, you know?
- 1:16But yeah, that's the way it happened.
- 1:18So if if I remember correctly, even though you're in this
- 1:22incredible racing family, you spent a lot of your time as a
- 1:27mechanic early in your life on your father's race cars, and
- 1:31then you didn't really start competing until you're about 22.
- 1:34Is that correct? 100% correct.
- 1:37You got it right. So you know, I grew up in in the
- 1:42Missouri area right here, basically born and raised in the
- 1:45city of Saint Louis, went to Rolla MO for a little bit, came
- 1:49back and my dad, Russ race. For a hobby.
- 1:53But he won all the time. And you know it just got to be
- 1:57where us boys, you know, my brother Rusty, my brother Mike,
- 2:03my uncle Gary, my mom, we we enjoyed racing around the local
- 2:08area. Well, we started winning a lot
- 2:12and Rusty said, hey, let's go NASCAR.
- 2:14And yeah, so I spent a lot of time helping my family.
- 2:18And that's why I started racing so late, because I spent so much
- 2:22time helping my family. What about the dynamic with you
- 2:26and Rusty? I'm sure you're extremely proud
- 2:29of your older brother, who had a magnificent career also, but was
- 2:33there a rivalry? Was there?
- 2:35What was going on, the dynamics of the Wallace family with the
- 2:38two of you in particular? Yeah, really good question for a
- 2:43lot of reasons, because I get asked that question every once
- 2:46in a while. I absolutely.
- 2:50And I know it sounds a little corny, but it's just the way it
- 2:53is, man. I worship my brothers, my Big
- 2:56Brother Rusty, my brother Mike. They were always good to me when
- 3:01I grew up in Arnold, MO. They are always looking out for
- 3:03me. And when it came time for me to
- 3:06race a little bit, you know, they were there for me.
- 3:08But way before that, man. I mean, I was all in with my
- 3:13dad. I was all in, you know, with my
- 3:16brother. Rusty, my brother Mike.
- 3:19I mean, it got to the point where, you know, if if something
- 3:22happened to Rusty on the track and he wasn't going good, I mean
- 3:26I'd cry. I'm like, Oh my God, you know, I
- 3:28mean, I think that's how bad we wanted it.
- 3:30You know, there's an old saying Father John taught me.
- 3:34Be careful, young man. Competition will kill you.
- 3:37Well, we were a we were very competitive.
- 3:40You know, we if we lost, it was horrible.
- 3:43So. I was always all rusty, all my
- 3:47and I think because I started racing later, you know, I should
- 3:53have been racing at like 12, but I didn't start racing until 22.
- 3:58The only reason I got started really and made it to NASCAR is
- 4:01because of Rusty. Rusty started me a team, he
- 4:05rolled out the red carpet. My brother Rusty spent a couple
- 4:08$1,000,000 on me and but. I started my own racing back
- 4:14here in Saint Louis and and Rusty saw how much effort I was
- 4:18putting into my own career and and he said to me he goes, you
- 4:22know why I'm helping you. And I said no brother, why are
- 4:25you doing all this for me? He said because you helped me.
- 4:29So yes, I love Rusty. There's no civilian rivalry, and
- 4:33I've been all rusty all the time.
- 4:36All right? And here you are at about 6
- 4:39decades of life and you're still getting into the car.
- 4:43Why? Why?
- 4:46You know, I will not be long winded, but I'm going to go
- 4:50somewhere where you you won't. A lot of people won't
- 4:54understand. My grandma.
- 4:56My grandpa died of heart attacks, you know, high
- 5:01cholesterol my dad died of. High cholesterol eating sticks
- 5:06of butter back in the day. Born in the 30s, man.
- 5:10I watched my family members die and I said I'm going to do
- 5:14everything I can do. So I'm in really, really good
- 5:18shape. Now listen, I'm not a football
- 5:21athlete, but I live on, you know, good food.
- 5:26I eat good food and I'm in great shape and I'm sixty and I feel
- 5:31like I'm 45. You know, and I I had great
- 5:36advice from great athletes and their their advice to me was man
- 5:42be careful with that big R word. Be careful return.
- 5:48And you know what the reason I'm racing right now is because I'm
- 5:52super competitive. I win.
- 5:54I'm the oldest driver out there. But I mean, I literally kick
- 5:58their ass and I take pride in it.
- 6:01And. I mean, I really do, You know, I
- 6:03mean it it I have people come up to me all the time and they go,
- 6:08man, I want to do as good as you at your age.
- 6:12And I go fast right away. And the real reason I'm doing
- 6:16it, Frank, is because it gives me something to do.
- 6:19You know, the other guys, you know Ozzy Smith, he's golfing.
- 6:23That's fine, Let Ozzy golf. You know I'm going to race.
- 6:27All those, all those, you know, you know what I'm talking about.
- 6:30Your your guys, they all golf. That's all they do.
- 6:33Yeah. So I'm just going to race.
- 6:34I'm I'm going to race, you know, that's that's the deal.
- 6:37You know, Mike Schmidt, the Hall of Fame third baseman, used to
- 6:41say that when he went to the plate, he was really analytical
- 6:46and mechanical and really just analyze things and when he get
- 6:49in the slums, it would just kill him.
- 6:52And then in the field, though, it was completely opposite.
- 6:54It was all instinctual. Just let it happen.
- 6:57And I'm wondering if I could draw a similarity with you as a
- 7:01racer. You know, you are really
- 7:03organized and you, you think out the process and you know exactly
- 7:08what to do. You got a game plan and then you
- 7:10oppose that. Or you contrast that with your
- 7:12broadcasting career and you just let it hang.
- 7:15And it's all instinctual. And I'm not saying it came easy,
- 7:18but it seems like when you're on the air, it came easy for the
- 7:21people don't know it. You had a tremendous career.
- 7:23Fox National doing races. That was all natural.
- 7:27You just let it all hang out, right?
- 7:29Yes, 100%. I I had a there was a really
- 7:33good racer. He's still alive.
- 7:34The great Ned Jarrett. I gave a speech and he said how
- 7:38are you able to do that? You know, he said.
- 7:40I went to Dale Carnegie class and I.
- 7:43I said, man, I was just born like that.
- 7:44You know, I if I walk in a room and it's real quiet, I can't
- 7:48take that. You know, I got a there's got to
- 7:51be happiness involved. Hey, how you doing?
- 7:53And then when when Fox Sports, you know Eric Shanks, the
- 7:58president of Fox out in LA, you know, he, he hired Joe Buck and
- 8:02you know Troy Aikman, he said, you know why we're asking you to
- 8:05come to work for Fox Sports? And I said, I have no idea.
- 8:09And he told me it was funny. He goes.
- 8:12Because you have a lot to say in, in other words, I'm the
- 8:15mouth of the South, you know, I do a lot of talking.
- 8:18But you know, I love the sport that I'm in and it's very easy
- 8:23to talk about the sport that you love because in a in a weird
- 8:27way, Frank and it's kind of like, you know I'm a big fan of
- 8:30yours. I mean, Frank, you know
- 8:33everything. It's and it's not.
- 8:35It's just because you do. You live, eat and breathe all
- 8:38sports. Whether it's Mizzou right now or
- 8:41the Cardinals or, you know, the Blues are local high school, you
- 8:46just know everything. And that's the way I am, man.
- 8:49I know everything about racing and I don't even got to try
- 8:52because I live, eat and breathe it.
- 8:54Yeah, I don't even got to study. So yes, because I live, eat and
- 8:59breathe the sport, it, it becomes second nature to me.
- 9:03I was born hyperactive, you know, they had me on Ritland.
- 9:06They took me off Ritland. So I, you know, I just kind of
- 9:10go hard all the time, you know, And I and I see you the same
- 9:13way. There's no wearing you out.
- 9:15I mean you walk a mile a minute, you're digging all the time.
- 9:19And I'm kind of the, I'm kind of cut the same cloth you are.
- 9:23You know, you don't ever give up.
- 9:25And I noticed you don't ever slow down.
- 9:28I'm getting a text from one of my friends who went to Fox High
- 9:30School right about the time you went to Fox High School.
- 9:33And he says he he didn't remember seeing you a lot at Fox
- 9:36High School. So I graduated.
- 9:39I graduated in 1981. I am in the, you know, the Fox
- 9:45High School Hall of Fame. So are a lot of other great
- 9:48athletes. You know, out of Fox came, you
- 9:51know, Chicago Bears players, you know, a lot of great, you know,
- 9:57Olympics. It is shocking, I mean, and I'm
- 9:59sure it's that way all over the city of Saint Louis, but it is
- 10:02amazing. To go to the Fox High School
- 10:06Hall of Fame and and looking at me, there's torches in there
- 10:09from the Olympics. It's like, whoa, you know?
- 10:12But Fox was a part of my path. Listen, I didn't need to go to
- 10:17high school. They made me go okay, because,
- 10:21you know what I mean, Frank? I knew.
- 10:23I knew what I was going to do when I was 12 years old, you
- 10:27know? I mean, you know, they say, they
- 10:30say that. One of the biggest issues in
- 10:33life is a man. A man is 32 years old and he
- 10:37still doesn't know what he wanted to do.
- 10:39Hell, I knew what I was going to do at 9.
- 10:42I'm like, I'm going to be a race car driver.
- 10:44So Fox High School, I'd love it and I do a lot with him.
- 10:49But you know, I could have. I could have.
- 10:52Go to quit school early and then just fine and it was in my way
- 10:57and but I do love everybody at Fox.
- 11:00I helped them financially to this day.
- 11:03But I love Fox and it was it was a good part of my life.
- 11:07All right, you went on your Twitter and by the way, your
- 11:11Twitter is just unbelievable. You give you show you in food
- 11:16contest, all auto racing related, just everything is
- 11:20great and you have 365,365 thousand followers.
- 11:27And the other day you had a really great post about a young
- 11:31man that I met in your garage about six months ago who's got
- 11:35some health concerns. And you have raised a blank ton
- 11:38of money for him to tell our listeners what's going on here.
- 11:43Yeah, Frankie Rollins out of. Farmington, MO.
- 11:47You know, down that way. His nickname is Jughead.
- 11:51Just, you know, we all get nicknames.
- 11:55So Frankie came down with chronic pancreatitis and started
- 12:00losing the enormous amount of weight out of nowhere and really
- 12:04concerned us. So Frankie has been to every
- 12:08chronic pancreatitis. Doctor in the city of Saint
- 12:11Louis, he's been to Saint Louis University, he's been to
- 12:15Missouri Baptist, he's been to Doctor Lang.
- 12:19And we are having one hell of a time.
- 12:22So Doctor, Doctor Lang is well known if you Google top chronic
- 12:27pancreatitis doctors. And if Doctor Lang is listen or
- 12:31anybody knows him, we're begging for help.
- 12:34I mean, we're on. He's on his deathbed.
- 12:37And so Doctor Lang said we cannot do anything for you.
- 12:42We're going to refer you to the Mayo Clinic.
- 12:45Well, Frank Frankie's poor Okay, and that's sad to say, but I
- 12:51help him out all I can and we're we are doing everything we can
- 12:54to get him to the Mayo Clinic and we raised right around 150
- 12:58grand. We can raise way more.
- 13:00I told Frankie, I said, Frankie, we can raise you 1/4 of
- 13:03$1,000,000 right now. But damn.
- 13:05But we got to we got to get you fixed.
- 13:07So. You know, I'm.
- 13:08I'm begging all the doctors right now in the city of Saint
- 13:11Louis. You know, be a hero.
- 13:14Be a hero If you're that damn smart.
- 13:17Help my friend. But right now, Doctor Lang, and
- 13:21you know, they've all given up on Frankie.
- 13:23We don't know what's wrong with you.
- 13:25We got to refer you to the Mayo Clinic and you know, I'm
- 13:28hyperactive and it's going on 2 weeks.
- 13:31My friend's dying. I mean, and he's barely he's
- 13:34going to the race tracks with me to keep him alive.
- 13:37The racing community is awesome. You know they're doing
- 13:41fundraisers. But man, I I need Saint Louis
- 13:44University. I need Barnes Jewish Hospital.
- 13:49You know, if you all are that damn good fix my friend, you
- 13:53know? But unfortunately, it's sad to
- 13:56say, you know, we all know what this is all about anymore.
- 13:59Hospitals. All they do is refer you to, you
- 14:04know, Sweet 2A over here, some specialist.
- 14:07And I'm pissed off. I really am because the health
- 14:10industry is so specialized now and I I need help and I need to
- 14:16save my friend's life. It's extremely hard to watch my
- 14:20friend die and he's dying. And the Mayo, you know, they got
- 14:25thousands of people in line. There's thousands of people, you
- 14:28know, everybody's slashing $1,000,000.
- 14:31Hell, I'm talking to the Mayo Clinic.
- 14:33I might dude, I got 100 grand cash right now.
- 14:36You know, it's sad as all get out, but if there's anybody in
- 14:40Saint Louis, you know, Doctor Lane says I can't do no more.
- 14:43And he's super famous just Googling.
- 14:46So I hate to do this, but you know, you started it.
- 14:49And I appreciate you doing that for me, Frank, but my buddy's
- 14:53dying. He feels like he's got six
- 14:55months left to live. Oh boy.
- 14:57Super hard. Super hard for me to watch him
- 14:59go dying. Well we wish you luck with that
- 15:02and anybody wants more information go to Kenny
- 15:04Wallace's Twitter at Kenny under score Wallace.
- 15:08One more thought before we let you go NASCAR this week.
- 15:12They go to Texas for the they go to the Texas Motor Speedway.
- 15:17Kyle Larson, Tyler Reddick and Denny Hamlin have been the
- 15:20winners. How do you break down this race
- 15:23on Sunday, which will broadcast on Channel 5?
- 15:27Yeah, awesome. Yeah, NBC doing a great job.
- 15:30You know, Dale Junior and they got a great group there, you
- 15:34know. So I'll be going down there.
- 15:35I'm going to be leaving tomorrow.
- 15:36My plane leaves at 5:00. We'll be doing our prerace show
- 15:39on the front, straight away in front of all the fans.
- 15:43You know what's exciting, Frank? There's 12 people left in the
- 15:46playoffs. Every three races we get rid of
- 15:50four and all this comes to an end, you know, right around
- 15:53early November. So it's exciting because there's
- 15:58so many great races and race car drivers that there's not a
- 16:02favorite. We just had a big shocking blow.
- 16:05We just kicked out, you know, Kevin Harvick, our champion, and
- 16:10of course Joey Legano, our two time champion because they have
- 16:14some bad luck. So my point is this.
- 16:17They're all really good. The 12 that are left are all
- 16:21winners and they're all really good.
- 16:23And then it's going to come down to the finale in Phoenix.
- 16:27And you just got to watch. And you know, we, I do a YouTube
- 16:30show. I follow up.
- 16:31I let everybody know what's up. But I think right now, Denny
- 16:35Hamlin, to answer your question, he's on a hot streak.
- 16:39Denny Hamlin is hot. He's the guy to watch out for.
- 16:43All right, I lied. I got one last one.
- 16:45Somebody love it. Somebody asked me to ask you
- 16:48about this, and I'm glad they did.
- 16:52You are still madly in love with your bride, Kim.
- 16:56We got a lot of husbands out there listening to this.
- 17:00Tell me the secret to your success and why you love her in
- 17:0360 seconds. Well, I'm 60 years old.
- 17:06The key my success is I go do my deal.
- 17:10She goes and does her deal. And we meet in bed at night and
- 17:15we truly love each other. You got to you got to stay away
- 17:18from each other a little bit so you can love each other more.
- 17:21The key, the key to marriage and the key to loving each other is
- 17:25you cannot stay glued to each other.
- 17:28You got to give each other a little space so you don't get on
- 17:31each other's nerves all the time.
- 17:32That that whole that whole deal of being glued to each other,
- 17:36that's that's a false narrative. I I love my wife right now more
- 17:40than I did. When I met her in 1980 at Fox
- 17:44High School. That is awesome.
- 17:46Boy, I got to tell this to Monique because she she's all
- 17:49over me like a cheap suit 24 hours a day.
- 17:52Yeah, well, you know, dinner should be exciting.
- 17:54You know. She does her deal.
- 17:56I do my deal. Hey, honey, I want to go to
- 17:58dinner. I haven't seen you all day.
- 18:02Yep. You are the best.
- 18:04Congratulations on the Hall of Fame.
- 18:06That's great stuff. Well deserved.
- 18:07We'll talk soon, Sir. Thank you so much.
- 18:09Thank you, Frank. All right, Kenny Wallace.
