- 0:00Speaker 1: All right, So, Jeff Legwald, we're talking about an ankle,
- 0:04Speaker 1: bo Nix's ankle, and like, follow me on this, all right.
- 0:12Speaker 1: I don't think a player having a broken ankle and
- 0:17Speaker 1: then having it checked and then needing a follow up
- 0:20Speaker 1: procedure is terribly uncommon. I don't think in and of itself,
- 0:25Speaker 1: it's terribly alarming. The weird part is about all of
- 0:30Speaker 1: this has been the messaging starting from the tet a
- 0:35Speaker 1: tet between bo Nix and Sean Payton of anklegate at
- 0:39Speaker 1: the end of the season two and we even joked
- 0:42Speaker 1: about this the greatest rehab in the history of ankle
- 0:46Speaker 1: injuries that the Greg Penner and Sean Payton and George
- 0:49Speaker 1: Peyton were all alerting us to. We asked you about
- 0:53Speaker 1: it when these quotes are made, and of course Jeff
- 0:55Speaker 1: Legwald always gives us his answer of I'll believe it
- 0:58Speaker 1: when I see it, which, uh, that's that's a salty
- 1:02Speaker 1: old reporter right there, knowing how to do his job.
- 1:05Speaker 1: So I guess my question here is, Jeff, and as
- 1:08Speaker 1: you've dug into this, like when did they know about
- 1:13Speaker 1: another procedure?
- 1:15Speaker 2: And and and what did they.
- 1:17Speaker 1: Know about another procedure? Like how how did all of
- 1:21Speaker 1: this news come about for the Broncos and how did
- 1:24Speaker 1: all the messaging get so disheveled?
- 1:28Speaker 3: Well, and I Nate, I think, Uh, the quick answer
- 1:32Speaker 3: is it's pretty convoluted as to you know, who know
- 1:35Speaker 3: what when?
- 1:37Speaker 2: Yeah, what did they know? And when did they know it?
- 1:39Speaker 4: You know?
- 1:40Speaker 3: Now Sometimes and it's very common when you go away
- 1:44Speaker 3: to be checked, like he's going to the Andrews Orthopedic
- 1:50Speaker 3: UH Complex in Birmingham where.
- 1:52Speaker 2: That's where doctor Waldrop works.
- 1:54Speaker 3: Okay, yeah, that's and most of your anybody who has
- 1:59Speaker 3: a successful career, you know, and has an ankle problem
- 2:03Speaker 3: is probably headed there or to Dallas where Cooper, the
- 2:09Speaker 3: Cowboys' team physician, is also one of the big orthopedic
- 2:14Speaker 3: surgeons for players around the league. So when you go away,
- 2:18Speaker 3: you're often checked and sometimes they say as long as
- 2:22Speaker 3: you're here, this needs to be addressed. Yeah, you know,
- 2:25Speaker 3: or the the actual player will bring something to the
- 2:29Speaker 3: attention of the sort of like hey, the other day
- 2:32Speaker 3: I was working out and so yeah, some of that
- 2:36Speaker 3: is is unclear, but you know they given that Nix
- 2:41Speaker 3: has been at the Broncos facility rehabbing every day, I
- 2:46Speaker 3: think everybody probably knew something in the days leading up
- 2:51Speaker 3: before he went to Birmingham, and it was the recheck
- 2:54Speaker 3: was scheduled because they probably said you better go get
- 2:58Speaker 3: that checked out type of thing at some point, whether
- 3:01Speaker 3: it was pain or some kind of issue in his rehab.
- 3:04Speaker 4: So you know, there is a.
- 3:06Speaker 3: Timeframe there between the owner's meetings and when everyone professed
- 3:12Speaker 3: going to be ready for OTAs even was said publicly
- 3:17Speaker 3: until the draft time when he did go. So you know,
- 3:22Speaker 3: I think the messaging part was a lot of Sean
- 3:27Speaker 3: Payton's sort of dismissment, you know, dismissal of the question
- 3:31Speaker 3: after the draft. Yeah, yeah, he went for a retrack.
- 3:34Speaker 3: You know, everything was great. Nothing to report Now he
- 3:38Speaker 3: often says nothing to report to me, I don't want
- 3:42Speaker 3: to want to talk about it. Not that there's actually
- 3:45Speaker 3: nothing to report. He's hoping nobody looks for things to
- 3:50Speaker 3: report after that. So the nothing to report is often
- 3:55Speaker 3: his go to well when he does not want to
- 3:59Speaker 3: speak to do an injury. So you know, I think
- 4:03Speaker 3: some of the nothing to report wasn't him saying there's
- 4:06Speaker 3: nothing going on. It was more him saying I don't
- 4:09Speaker 3: want to talk about it. So some of that messaging
- 4:12Speaker 3: is just him and how he does things. But you
- 4:17Speaker 3: know the real thing is is you know, likely to
- 4:20Speaker 3: do nothing in the June work of substance, you know,
- 4:25Speaker 3: like in eleven on eleven and all of that. I
- 4:27Speaker 3: think it will be very surprising if he makes any
- 4:30Speaker 3: sort of appearance, substantial appearance in any of that stuff,
- 4:35Speaker 3: and then they're still in house planning for him to
- 4:38Speaker 3: be ready for training camp. Now does that mean one
- 4:41Speaker 3: hundred percent full go, you know, start of training camp.
- 4:46Speaker 4: I don't think we know the answer to that yet.
- 4:48Speaker 5: All right, what will this do? Will they look to
- 4:51Speaker 5: bring in another arm had they already done that? I mean,
- 4:53Speaker 5: what are we talking about with one less quarterback in
- 4:56Speaker 5: the rotation for these reps you talked about during the
- 4:58Speaker 5: summer or spring sum We're here in.
- 5:02Speaker 4: Yeah, and I think, uh, I think some of this
- 5:05Speaker 4: will be seen.
- 5:06Speaker 3: You know, they're having a rookie mini camp next weekend,
- 5:09Speaker 3: not this week, not this weekend, but Mother's Day weekend.
- 5:13Speaker 3: They're having a rookie mini camp.
- 5:15Speaker 4: So uh, if.
- 5:17Speaker 3: There is a tryout, tryout quarterback in for that, you know,
- 5:21Speaker 3: that may show some things. But there's still time for
- 5:26Speaker 3: them to worry about training camp.
- 5:29Speaker 4: They can get through OTA's and mini camp with you know,
- 5:35Speaker 4: with what they have.
- 5:36Speaker 3: So I don't I don't think that will take anything
- 5:38Speaker 3: training camp. Uh, they may need another arm if he's
- 5:42Speaker 3: not you know, full full go, just to get through
- 5:46Speaker 3: some of the practices and things.
- 5:47Speaker 4: So but we don't.
- 5:49Speaker 3: I don't think we know the answer to that yet, Andy,
- 5:51Speaker 3: you know, I think long term, we don't. You know,
- 5:53Speaker 3: this is this is not this is at least three
- 5:57Speaker 3: ankle surgery since he joined the Broncos, and he had
- 6:01Speaker 3: multiple ankle surgeries in college, and it is believed he
- 6:05Speaker 3: had one in high school as well. So, but some
- 6:10Speaker 3: of that is not available information to be verified one
- 6:15Speaker 3: thousand percent correct.
- 6:17Speaker 1: And he doesn't believe Sean Payton should be talking about
- 6:20Speaker 1: how many ankle surgeries he has had. He doesn't even
- 6:22Speaker 1: know how many ankle surgeries Bo has had.
- 6:25Speaker 3: Right, and he may, you know, the team can track
- 6:30Speaker 3: often at the combine. I hear of players medical histories
- 6:36Speaker 3: from high school being discussed. That information is available at
- 6:41Speaker 3: times to teams, but it's not always one hundred percent
- 6:46Speaker 3: with every player involved, so some of that comes to
- 6:51Speaker 3: light later sometimes only if the player himself, you know,
- 6:56Speaker 3: surrenders that information. So again, it's uh with like all
- 7:01Speaker 3: of us, the medical histories are uh, you know, it's
- 7:04Speaker 3: a it can be a touchy business. Uh for anybody,
- 7:09Speaker 3: including us, you know out there in the world. Uh,
- 7:12Speaker 3: it's no different for NFL players. But I just think, uh,
- 7:17Speaker 3: you know, again, he had an ankle surgery after his
- 7:19Speaker 3: rookie season. He's now had two for this injury. So
- 7:24Speaker 3: that's that's three in his two years as an NFL quarterback.
- 7:28Speaker 3: I think that bears watching, you know, could mean nothing
- 7:32Speaker 3: eight years from now. Sure he may not have he
- 7:34Speaker 3: may not have another one. So uh, I think all
- 7:37Speaker 3: of that just remains.
- 7:39Speaker 4: To be to be looked at.
- 7:40Speaker 1: But in the meantime, he's attacking surgery. It's a special
- 7:43Speaker 1: Avalanche playoff ticket Friday. We're giving away tickets to the
- 7:46Speaker 1: first game of Round two against the Wild. The keyword
- 7:48Speaker 1: is harbor text harbor h A R B O R
- 7:51Speaker 1: TOO three oh three, five oh four O nine to
- 7:54Speaker 1: two five along with your name and you are entered.
- 7:56Speaker 1: We'll announce a winner at five fifty five. Jeff with
- 8:00Speaker 1: the with the with the latest update on another procedure
- 8:04Speaker 1: for bow knicks. It's not as though I think Sean
- 8:07Speaker 1: Payton was clamoring for validation or anything else like that.
- 8:10Speaker 1: But upon re examination of the initial ankle gate controversy, uh,
- 8:17Speaker 1: the predisposed versus not predisposed, and what Sean Payton revealed
- 8:23Speaker 1: when he talked to the media after the AFC Championship,
- 8:26Speaker 1: and then what bow Nicks contradicted the next day when
- 8:31Speaker 1: he talked on Zoom. Looking back on it all now,
- 8:38Speaker 1: like what to make of all of it? Was Sean
- 8:42Speaker 1: Peyton too honest or was he just being forthright and
- 8:48Speaker 1: the quarterback didn't want the information out? Like, really, all
- 8:53Speaker 1: we have to go off of, Jeff, is what they've
- 8:55Speaker 1: all said, and what they've all said doesn't add up
- 8:59Speaker 1: to much.
- 9:01Speaker 4: Right, and it may not. Yeah, we we may.
- 9:04Speaker 3: We may be frustrated, you know, just in a general sense.
- 9:07Speaker 3: We can't get to the bottom of this. You know again, it's.
- 9:11Speaker 1: We are frustrated in a general sense about a lot
- 9:14Speaker 1: of Yeah.
- 9:15Speaker 3: No, well, today's a good day to be frustrated. Yeah, no,
- 9:19Speaker 3: it's but you know again, it's it's medical issues can
- 9:24Speaker 3: be touchy in the NFL. Players players see their teammates
- 9:30Speaker 3: moved on, they don't get signed. You know, if if
- 9:33Speaker 3: there's this medical uh, you know, cloud over them. So
- 9:39Speaker 3: you know, players are always going to be sort of
- 9:42Speaker 3: reluctant to get too deep into that.
- 9:46Speaker 4: Yeah.
- 9:46Speaker 3: No, I've had guys not even want to tell me
- 9:49Speaker 3: if it was, you know, the right knee or the
- 9:51Speaker 3: left knee, you know, for for something. So, uh, you know,
- 9:55Speaker 3: there is just that general sense about it. I think
- 9:58Speaker 3: Bo is like some young players in the league. I
- 10:04Speaker 3: think he struggles with having like part of his life
- 10:08Speaker 3: that's just his and you know the rest of it
- 10:11Speaker 3: is your Broncos quarterback Bonix.
- 10:13Speaker 4: You know what I mean.
- 10:14Speaker 3: I think some of that is his nature about those things.
- 10:19Speaker 3: And you know, again, I think Sean Payton has is
- 10:23Speaker 3: briefed by the team's medical staff every day about players status.
- 10:29Speaker 3: So he could have heard something and you know, expressed it.
- 10:36Speaker 3: You know, you know, both parts can be true. He
- 10:39Speaker 3: could have expressed part of something or what he heard
- 10:42Speaker 3: all of what he of what he heard in sort
- 10:45Speaker 3: of a casual, ah, you know, media moment, and you
- 10:50Speaker 3: know it wasn't maybe exactly syllable for syllable what.
- 10:54Speaker 4: Bon Nicks believed it was.
- 10:59Speaker 3: And I've said all when Bo spoke to a few
- 11:01Speaker 3: of us on that call, I took it as.
- 11:06Speaker 4: I am.
- 11:07Speaker 3: You know, this isn't gonna change me from the player
- 11:11Speaker 3: I am. That's that's how I took it in that moment,
- 11:15Speaker 3: and I was later told that was correct. You know,
- 11:18Speaker 3: he wasn't. He has told people in the building he
- 11:21Speaker 3: wasn't taking a shot at Sean. He just didn't want
- 11:24Speaker 3: people to think he was going to be impacted by this.
- 11:27Speaker 4: But obviously he's because.
- 11:28Speaker 1: He would like two hundred and fifty million dollars in
- 11:31Speaker 1: a couple of years, which again is very understandable.
- 11:34Speaker 3: And you're at the quarterback, you're the alpha, You're it's
- 11:37Speaker 3: just not your mentality to say, I'm you know, this
- 11:40Speaker 3: is a struggle for me, you know right now or
- 11:43Speaker 3: you know that's just not in the in the DNA
- 11:46Speaker 3: of the position. So I just I've said, I just
- 11:51Speaker 3: think it will bear watching. It might not meet anything,
- 11:54Speaker 3: you know, a season from now, two seasons from now.
- 11:58Speaker 3: But all we know is that he's had three ankle
- 12:01Speaker 3: surgeries since he started playing for the Denver Broncos.
- 12:06Speaker 4: So we go from there with that information.
- 12:09Speaker 5: Hey, you may not have asked this because maybe you
- 12:10Speaker 5: don't care, but you do have connections in Pittsburgh. You
- 12:14Speaker 5: covered that team extensively once upon a time. Why did
- 12:17Speaker 5: Pittsburgh put the designation on Aaron Rodgers that they did.
- 12:22Speaker 3: I think part of it is, you know, to sort
- 12:24Speaker 3: of protect themselves a little bit and to spur it
- 12:31Speaker 3: along a little bit too. Art Rooney has said publicly
- 12:39Speaker 3: that he believed they would they would have known something already,
- 12:43Speaker 3: so he has said that publicly.
- 12:45Speaker 4: So that's not like a secret.
- 12:48Speaker 3: So they're obviously sort of trying to get an answer
- 12:52Speaker 3: from him. And you know, it's intriguing that this is
- 12:56Speaker 3: how sort of Brett Faire.
- 12:57Speaker 4: Did things at the end of his career.
- 13:00Speaker 3: Uh, you know, and that's the guy Aaron replaced, oh
- 13:04Speaker 3: so long ago. So but I think it was more
- 13:07Speaker 3: or less the Steelers trying to sort of protect themselves
- 13:11Speaker 3: and and get an answer at the same time.
- 13:14Speaker 1: Jeff Legwald, everybody ESPN dot Com get his Broncos coverage
- 13:17Speaker 1: right there.
- 13:18Speaker 2: Leggy, you're the best in the BIS man. We appreciate it.
- 13:21Speaker 1: And uh and and much like two other alums at
- 13:24Speaker 1: the University of Illinois, Uh, you absolutely crushed it today.
- 13:28Speaker 2: So nice job.
- 13:30Speaker 4: Thanks Pallas. We'll see you all right.
- 13:32Speaker 2: There he goes, there's Jeff Legwald
