- 0:01Speaker 1: Local news now, a VOCM News Update.
- 0:05Speaker 2: I'm Sarah Strickland. Finance Minister François-Philippe Champagne is defending his
- 0:10Speaker 2: government's decision to drop seafood and fish from Canada's list
- 0:14Speaker 2: of retaliatory tariffs against the United States. Canada's seafood sector,
- 0:19Speaker 2: which is integrated with the industry in the U.S., was
- 0:22Speaker 2: caught by surprise at the proposed tariffs and scrambled to
- 0:26Speaker 2: push for their removal. Champagne says this shows his government
- 0:30Speaker 2: listened to Canadians.
- 0:32Speaker 3: Well, it sent a message to Canadians that we listen.
- 0:35Speaker 3: We have updated the list. The list is in Canada's
- 0:38Speaker 3: best interest. And that happens from time to time that
- 0:42Speaker 3: these lists are updated, you know. And so we made
- 0:45Speaker 3: the update because I think that was the right thing
- 0:47Speaker 3: to do in the interest of Canada.
- 0:50Speaker 2: The Maine Lobsterman Association had warned the tariffs would be
- 0:54Speaker 2: devastating for its industry and coastal communities since Canada is
- 0:58Speaker 2: one of the most important markets for Maine lobster. Well,
- 1:02Speaker 2: the White House may be calling it Lake America now,
- 1:04Speaker 2: but Canadians are being told that Lake Ontario is not
- 1:08Speaker 2: going anywhere. Prime Minister Mark Carney says the lake has
- 1:11Speaker 2: carried its name for more than 400 years, and Ontario
- 1:15Speaker 2: Premier Doug Ford says the original name remains. The dispute
- 1:19Speaker 2: comes during an already strained Canada-U.S. relationship following the collapse
- 1:23Speaker 2: of trade talks and the imposition of new tariffs. Critics
- 1:27Speaker 2: on both sides of the border have dismissed the move
- 1:30Speaker 2: as a distraction, while Trump says Canada wants the advantages
- 1:33Speaker 2: of statehood without actually becoming a state. The area MHA
- 1:38Speaker 2: says every time there is a loss at sea, it
- 1:41Speaker 2: opens wounds for many. A man in his early 40s
- 1:44Speaker 2: lost his life not far from the wharf in Westport
- 1:47Speaker 2: on the Bay of Earth Peninsula Wednesday after his boat overturned.
- 1:51Speaker 2: He was in an open boat with his catch of
- 1:53Speaker 2: squid when something went wrong. People close to the situation
- 1:56Speaker 2: say he was not wearing a life jacket and did
- 1:59Speaker 2: not know how to swim. Bayvert Green Bay MHA Lynn
- 2:03Speaker 2: Paddock says this is a grieving time and he's confident
- 2:06Speaker 2: that people will continue to look out for each other.
- 2:10Speaker 1: It's one of these here now it's about embracing his family,
- 2:14Speaker 1: his friends, the community of Westport. There'll be another day
- 2:20Speaker 1: to look at investigating these types of incidents and how
- 2:25Speaker 1: we collectively improve safety for the fishing industry writ large.
- 2:32Speaker 2: The province's energy minister says an agreement reached with Quebec
- 2:35Speaker 2: on hydro development is not just about getting a better
- 2:38Speaker 2: deal than the original 1969 Upper Churchill contract. It's also
- 2:43Speaker 2: about the benefits that will come, not just to Labrador,
- 2:46Speaker 2: but the entire province. Lloyd Parrott says it was all
- 2:50Speaker 2: part of the consideration that government has given to accepting
- 2:53Speaker 2: the new deal.
- 2:55Speaker 4: This deal is as much about upgrading Churchill Falls, developing
- 2:58Speaker 4: a new resource, as it is about building a new economy.
- 3:01Speaker 4: And when we sat and discussed the magnitude of this
- 3:04Speaker 4: deal and what it meant, we took into consideration certainly
- 3:07Speaker 4: Labrador West, Labrador Trough, our mining operations up around Shefferville,
- 3:11Speaker 4: defense investments that were going to happen in Goose Bay,
- 3:14Speaker 4: and how much communities like Labrador City and Wabush and
- 3:17Speaker 4: Goose Bay and the coast of Labrador were being left behind.
- 3:21Speaker 2: Two air traffic controllers allegedly left work early shortly before
- 3:26Speaker 2: the crash of a Canadian plane in March at New
- 3:28Speaker 2: York's LaGuardia Airport. Their union has acknowledged the allegations the
- 3:33Speaker 2: air traffic controllers clocked out before the Air Canada regional
- 3:36Speaker 2: jet crashed, killing the two pilots. U.S. media reports suggest
- 3:41Speaker 2: the Federal Aviation Administration is looking to fire the controllers.
- 3:45Speaker 2: The pair allegedly clocked out an hour before the end
- 3:48Speaker 2: of their shifts, leaving two colleagues at the LaGuardia Tower
- 3:52Speaker 2: without backup. Air Canada has suspended two employees arrested by
- 3:57Speaker 2: the RCMP over an alleged drug trafficking operation at Montreal
- 4:02Speaker 2: Trudeau Airport. Police say the employees may have helped move
- 4:05Speaker 2: luggage into secure areas to facilitate cocaine imports and cannabis
- 4:10Speaker 2: exports after 62.5 kilograms of cocaine were seized from a
- 4:14Speaker 2: flight from Punta Cana. Investigators also seized 56 kilograms of
- 4:19Speaker 2: cannabis and say more arrests are possible as they continue
- 4:23Speaker 2: reviewing the evidence. The provincial government is providing Ontario-based NordSpace
- 4:29Speaker 2: with $ 4 million to help with the development of a
- 4:32Speaker 2: spaceport in St.
- 4:33Speaker 1: Lawrence.
- 4:34Speaker 2: NordSpace made numerous attempts to get Canada's first commercial rocket
- 4:38Speaker 2: launch off the ground last year from the Buran Peninsula,
- 4:41Speaker 2: but weather, fishing boats and fires hampered their efforts to
- 4:44Speaker 2: compete in the race to space. Funding from the province
- 4:48Speaker 2: consists of a $ 1 million loan and a $ 3 million
- 4:52Speaker 2: forgivable loan contingent on creating 100 jobs over seven years.
- 4:57Speaker 2: The federal and provincial governments made the announcement yesterday, which
- 5:00Speaker 2: included another $ 1 million from Ottawa on top of $ 8
- 5:04Speaker 2: million provided in March. Government says the cash flow will
- 5:07Speaker 2: drive jobs in the region and create more business on
- 5:10Speaker 2: the Burren Peninsula. Ottawa says it plans to spend nearly
- 5:13Speaker 2: $ 2 trillion on the space business by 2040. That's your news.
- 5:19Speaker 2: I'm Sarah Strickland.
