- 0:02Welcome to Impact Ready, a show dedicated to helping you elevate
- 0:06your impact in the world. I'm Steph Safra, your host.
- 0:09Let's explore the power of showing up with intention and
- 0:12energy each day. This is for those who seek to
- 0:15make life truly meaningful. Get ready for impact.
- 0:22Hello team, hope you're having a great start to the week.
- 0:25Happy Monday. This episode today of the Impact
- 0:28Ready podcast is going to be all about how we get in the habit of
- 0:32inaction and how it gets in the way of us creating the life we
- 0:35want and having the impact that we want to have.
- 0:39And remember, when I say impact, I mean not only the impact that
- 0:43we have on other people, but also the impact we have on
- 0:45ourselves because that is really something that we're thinking
- 0:49about often. The ability to have the health
- 0:52we want, the relationships we want, the crew we want,
- 0:55etcetera. So to be impact ready is really
- 0:59just the process of learning how to consistently show up and be
- 1:02intentional about the energy that we're putting into the
- 1:05world. And because a lot of people feel
- 1:07like they get stuck or stagnant in this area of creating the
- 1:11life that we want. I mean, think about your life
- 1:15right now. You're trying to create a lot of
- 1:18different things, aren't you? Wealth, health, relationships, a
- 1:23romantic interest, opportunity, travel, whatever it might be.
- 1:27You are often in the process of thinking about how do I create
- 1:31what I want, joy, peace, whatever it might be.
- 1:35But we have to look at what gets in the way of that.
- 1:38And one of the big things that gets in the way is that we stop
- 1:42pursuing things. We get into a habit of inaction,
- 1:47or we get into complacency or we get into fear or whatever it
- 1:51might be, but we stop pursuing things in our life.
- 1:57A couple of years ago, I gave a keynote speech at a financial
- 2:01summit for this organization. And before any type of speech or
- 2:04event, I always ask what the demographics of the group are,
- 2:07what who will be attending, what ages are they like, what are
- 2:11their hopes, what are they focused on, What are their
- 2:13worries. And the organizer came back to
- 2:16me and said, OK, we have a pretty mixed group, some
- 2:19retirees, some young people, some young families, couples
- 2:24starting out. It's going to be kind of a mixed
- 2:27bag. So as I do, I created a speech
- 2:31in line with the theme of the event and it was largely
- 2:34centered around purpose and ownership and and leaning into
- 2:39your impact. When I got to the event, I met
- 2:43with everybody there. I did the sound check, I met
- 2:46with the organizers and I started to see the attendees
- 2:49rolling in. And after about 15 minutes of
- 2:53observing the room, it hit me like a freaking lightning bolt
- 2:57that this was not a group of young hopefuls.
- 3:01These were not young couples or young families just starting
- 3:04out. This group of people attending
- 3:07this event was almost entirely made-up of retirees who are
- 3:10looking to protect their wealth and their assets and enjoy a
- 3:13very specific season of life retirement.
- 3:17And I started to panic a little bit because as I was reflecting
- 3:22on my speech, I realized that there's a lot of stuff that I
- 3:26was talking about that had to do with taking ownership of your
- 3:29situation and your circumstances and examining your outlook and
- 3:33digging into your purpose and really leaning into the things
- 3:36that light you up in your life. All those things that I love to
- 3:39talk about that would have been perfect for a very mixed
- 3:42audience. To top it off, there was this
- 3:45older woman who approached me. I think she was related to
- 3:48somebody who worked at the firm. And she sat down and she said,
- 3:52you're not one of those inspirational people, are you?
- 3:57She goes, I don't really need any motivation or jargon.
- 4:00Like I've lived my life. I'm just here to enjoy my
- 4:03grandchildren and relax. God damn it, that's exactly who
- 4:08I was. I was one of those inspirational
- 4:10people she was talking about. And now I was sweating because I
- 4:14had a 45 minute keynote ahead of me where I had to speak to a
- 4:17room full of people who had completely different objectives
- 4:21than who I was targeting in my speech.
- 4:24So half an hour later, as I took to the stage, I knew I was going
- 4:29to have to think fast about how to make this work for this
- 4:32group. I didn't have time to change any
- 4:34of my content. I didn't have time to make a lot
- 4:37of alterations. I knew I could slant it.
- 4:39I knew I could speak to the people in front of me, but I was
- 4:42going to have to really like be tuned in to how this group was
- 4:46responding to me. And what that meant was that for
- 4:50the next three main points of my speech, I did end up talking
- 4:54about addressing ownership. I did talk about purpose and
- 4:58doing the things that light you up.
- 5:00And I did talk about how it's not too late to lean into the
- 5:04things that fuel you and, and give yourself permission to feel
- 5:08joy and excitement and passion, even if you're not in the
- 5:11hustling, grinding stages of your career of your 30s or your
- 5:1540s, even though life might look a little bit different for you
- 5:17right now. The whole speech, I was tracking
- 5:22the room. I was watching people's faces
- 5:24and trying to get a gauge on the energy.
- 5:27But as I closed my speech, I still didn't really have a great
- 5:30idea of how it was all going to be received.
- 5:35See, what most people think is that purpose and passion is for
- 5:40the youth or for a certain demographic of people or a
- 5:44certain industry. You know, we have all these
- 5:46scripts and rules about who we think it should be available to,
- 5:50how stay at home moms should feel versus women in corporate
- 5:54versus young entrepreneurs versus someone in their 60s who
- 5:57has an incredible idea or a dream to build something versus,
- 6:01you know, male, female versus everything.
- 6:04Just endless, endless scripts and rules about what's available
- 6:08and to whom. And the more I work with people,
- 6:12the more conversations I have, the more I start to understand
- 6:16that being human is being human. And we have core desires.
- 6:22We want to feel aliveness. We want to feel like we're in
- 6:26pursuit of something meaningful. We really, truly want to feel
- 6:30like we're doing something that has a purpose and meaning and a
- 6:33significance. It doesn't matter how old we are
- 6:37or where we're from or what circumstances we're in or what
- 6:40age we are, we want to feel like we're creating something
- 6:44beautiful for our lives and that it means something.
- 6:48And there's no limit as to how we pursue that.
- 6:51There's no limit to when and where and what we can do with
- 6:54our lives, even though that's the messaging we often feel and
- 6:58receive in our lives as Oh my God, it's too late.
- 7:01If I didn't achieve all these milestones by 25 or 35 or 45,
- 7:05then well, screw it. Like there's no use.
- 7:08But that's not how it is in reality.
- 7:10People don't stop burning and caring for the things in their
- 7:14life. There's no over the hill.
- 7:17Yes, there may be seasons to energy.
- 7:21There might be goals and desires that shift as we change and we
- 7:25gain wisdom in. Our perspective changes as a
- 7:29result of that wisdom, of course.
- 7:31But that doesn't mean that we stop caring about the quality of
- 7:34our connections and our existence here.
- 7:38I remember as I stepped away from the stage that night, I was
- 7:43bracing myself for whatever was going to happen.
- 7:46And what happened surprised the hell out of me, actually.
- 7:50I was surrounded by the attendees of the conference.
- 7:53A line formed to the side of the stage for people to come and
- 7:55talk to me. And one by one, men and women
- 7:59and couples came up and told me how much they felt like they
- 8:03needed to hear that message. They were saying things to me
- 8:06like I've given up on my own dreams because I thought I was
- 8:10too old or I thought it was too late.
- 8:12I've been putting my own needs aside for years.
- 8:14And I realized that I don't want to be second place to everyone
- 8:16else anymore. One couple came up and told me
- 8:19that they've been living separate lives and trying to
- 8:22find a way to reconnect. And tonight they just looked at
- 8:24each other across the table and they nodded.
- 8:26And they knew that this message was meant to encourage them to
- 8:30keep doing things together and finding their way back together.
- 8:34I mean, it was on and on. 45 minutes later, I was preparing
- 8:38to walk out the door when the same woman from before the
- 8:43speech came up to me and she goes, well, you got me, she
- 8:49said. I'll admit, I was pretty
- 8:50skeptical of you at the at the beginning, but I like what you
- 8:53said about finding something to fulfill your purpose.
- 8:57I just, I haven't known what that was for a really long time,
- 9:00but I'm really excited to figure out what it is.
- 9:04And I, I didn't say much. I just said I was so excited for
- 9:08her. And I walked out the door.
- 9:11I, I really couldn't believe it. I was smiling ear to ear as I
- 9:13walked to my car. The organizers were stoked.
- 9:16They were getting messages all evening about how the attendees
- 9:19were appreciative of a message that was different for an event
- 9:22like a financial summit. And so All in all, I think it
- 9:25was a success for them. But the thing that stuck out to
- 9:28me the most is that a message that I thought wasn't going to
- 9:33land opened the door to dozens of conversations and hopefully a
- 9:38lot got a lot of people thinking about it for days or or weeks to
- 9:41come. And this has happened to me a
- 9:44couple times more since that day, delivering speeches that I,
- 9:48I really wasn't sure we're going to land because the topic
- 9:51material isn't your typical strategic or technical subject
- 9:56matter. You know, I talk about purpose
- 9:59and energy and ownership and creating the life that you want,
- 10:03but what always stands out to me is that I always have
- 10:07conversations like that after every speech.
- 10:10And what's so clear is that even if we don't know the way
- 10:13forward, even if we can't see more than two steps in front of
- 10:17us on our path, just keep pursuing it.
- 10:21Keep going. I've been there, trust me.
- 10:24I've been in so many stages of my life where I can't even see
- 10:27anything in front of me. I feel like I'm in dense fog
- 10:29walking forward and I'm just praying that I'm moving in the
- 10:32right direction. But action beats anxiety every
- 10:36time. And while I'm someone who can
- 10:39historically get caught up in the details and stuck in the
- 10:42process of getting something going, the lesson that I've been
- 10:46learning more and more is to just pursue it.
- 10:50Just go take the action and keep poking at that passion that
- 10:55lives within you. When we can create more than we
- 10:59consume, we get this net positive on progress and where
- 11:04we want to go. And so my challenge to you this
- 11:07week is to pursue it. Whatever it is for you, keep
- 11:11going. Keep taking action.
- 11:14Keep getting frustrated and putting the hours into figuring
- 11:17out solutions to the little problems.
- 11:20Keep slogging through the tech stack or figuring out sales and
- 11:23marketing. Keep writing the book.
- 11:25Keep painting on the canvas. Keep working to believe in
- 11:29yourself. Keep working on that
- 11:31relationship. Just keep pursuing it.
- 11:35You know, the people who are successful are not the ones who
- 11:38are the smartest people or the most skilled people in the room.
- 11:41Always. They're the people who don't
- 11:43quit. They're the people that just
- 11:45keep freaking going. And that is my lesson right now
- 11:49in this season of my life is to keep going, keep pursuing the
- 11:53things that call to me. And, and I hope that you can
- 11:57hear that call too, is to think about what it what are you
- 12:00passionate about? What is calling you?
- 12:02What are your gifts? And even if you don't fully know
- 12:04what your gifts are, just start to think like, what do I love to
- 12:07do? What lights me up?
- 12:09And whatever that is, push on it, pursue it more, keep going.
- 12:15And I hope that this can inspire you.
- 12:18I'm going to keep going on my side of things, even when the
- 12:21path is a little bit foggy and I can't see more than a couple
- 12:24steps ahead. I hope that this episode can
- 12:27inspire you to keep going in your own life.
- 12:30I know that this is a a time where we're getting into holiday
- 12:33season and things can start to feel like they're slowing down a
- 12:35little bit, and that's OK. But I don't want you to forget
- 12:38that every day you have this opportunity to have an
- 12:41incredible impact on your family and your friends and the people
- 12:45in your lives. Like you make a difference.
- 12:47Your energy. It has an effect whenever you
- 12:50step into a room. So however you want to use that
- 12:53this season, just pay attention and pursue it.
- 12:57I'm really excited for you. I'm so glad you're here.
- 12:59Thank you for listening. And as always, thank you for
- 13:01being ready to impact. Thanks for listening to Impact.
- 13:05Ready, I hope. Today's episode inspired you to
- 13:07own your impact and recognize. That you are powerful.
