- 0:32What's going on, everybody?
- 0:33Welcome to the Clydesdale Media Podcast.
- 0:35My name is Scott Switch on the Clydesdale.
- 0:38Happy 4th of July to you
- 0:39people in the States.
- 0:40To everybody else, happy Thursday.
- 0:44We are so honored and
- 0:45privileged to have with us
- 0:46one of the CrossFit OG legends,
- 0:49Emma McQuaid.
- 0:50Emma, what's going on?
- 0:52I'm good.
- 0:52I'm good.
- 0:52How are you?
- 0:53I'm good.
- 0:54I'm good.
- 0:55So what's funny is you've
- 0:57been on the show one other
- 0:58time and it has been it was
- 1:00exactly two years ago tomorrow.
- 1:02No way.
- 1:03That's awesome.
- 1:04Yeah.
- 1:06And so when we first had that conversation,
- 1:08I don't you had just built
- 1:11the home gym or you were
- 1:12building the home gym.
- 1:13Yeah, I think I was building.
- 1:15Yeah.
- 1:15Yeah.
- 1:17And it has become like the,
- 1:21the lore of legend of like
- 1:24the greatest home gym ever built.
- 1:27Yeah, we, we put a lot of work into it,
- 1:29so I'm happy.
- 1:30It kind of turned out,
- 1:31it turned out really, really,
- 1:32really well.
- 1:34Yeah,
- 1:34I was doing research and I found
- 1:37Black Box did like a step
- 1:39as you were kind of creating the gym,
- 1:42little mini documentary of
- 1:44you kind of doing it.
- 1:46And then I'm going to pull
- 1:47up on Instagram a couple of
- 1:49videos that kind of show off your gym.
- 1:52It has an outdoor piece and
- 1:53an indoor piece.
- 1:55yep yeah the outdoor gym is
- 1:57like 3 200 square foot and
- 1:59the indoor gym is 3 300
- 2:01square foot yeah so pretty
- 2:03big face so this is a video
- 2:06on your instagram yeah
- 2:08incredible that's the
- 2:09outdoor yeah outdoor gym so
- 2:14so what came first the
- 2:15outdoor or the indoor
- 2:16Yeah,
- 2:17so the outdoor gym actually came
- 2:18because of COVID.
- 2:19So whenever COVID happened in Ireland,
- 2:22they stipulated that you
- 2:24could train with people in
- 2:26an outdoor gym.
- 2:27So I was like straight on to my husband.
- 2:29I was like, we need an outdoor gym.
- 2:31I was like, I need to train with people.
- 2:33So that kind of happened very quickly.
- 2:34And then once we made the new gym,
- 2:37then we kind of extended
- 2:39the outdoor gym a little
- 2:40bit more just to kind of
- 2:41blend in with the new gym.
- 2:44And then the indoor piece,
- 2:45I think this one highlights
- 2:46it pretty well.
- 2:48My goodness, the space you have.
- 2:50Yeah, it's good.
- 2:51Like obviously my husband
- 2:52owning like a structural
- 2:54engineering company.
- 2:55So he obviously designed the freestanding,
- 2:59like the freestanding rig
- 3:01and stuff like that.
- 3:02So obviously we just sort of
- 3:03built the gym to have as much space,
- 3:05floor space as possible.
- 3:07So it was good that he was
- 3:08able to help bring the
- 3:10dream alive as well.
- 3:12Yeah, I don't know if people can tell.
- 3:14Of course, it just went off of that.
- 3:15But you have a freestanding
- 3:16rig with pull-up bars and
- 3:18rings hanging from the
- 3:20center of the ceiling.
- 3:22And so it doesn't come down to the floor,
- 3:24giving you all this
- 3:25tremendous floor space.
- 3:27Yeah, it's so good.
- 3:29You can have so many people
- 3:30working out at the same time.
- 3:31And everyone has all their own space,
- 3:34which is great.
- 3:35No worry about the rig.
- 3:37And then on the one wall,
- 3:40you actually have individual... Yeah,
- 3:46five individual racks where
- 3:48if there's five people squatting,
- 3:50each person has a
- 3:51male-female bar and then
- 3:52one full stack of weights each.
- 3:56And it also looks like you
- 4:00have the plexiglass stuff
- 4:01on the wall for handstand push-ups.
- 4:03Yeah, so again,
- 4:05each of the five bays has the perspex,
- 4:09we call it plexiglass.
- 4:11Again, just to make it like,
- 4:13no one likes to do
- 4:14handstand push-ups up
- 4:15against a brick wall,
- 4:16so just to make it nice and comfortable.
- 4:19Yeah, it is awesome.
- 4:21And if you want to check it
- 4:23out in more detail, go out to YouTube,
- 4:26look for Emma McQuaid Home Gym.
- 4:29And Black Box did this mini documentary.
- 4:31It's like three or four episodes.
- 4:33It's awesome.
- 4:34Showing you as you build it.
- 4:37Yeah, it was good.
- 4:39So it's...
- 4:41What's crazy is I live in Columbus, Ohio,
- 4:43so I live where Rogue is.
- 4:44Oh, yeah.
- 4:46And when you go to their showroom,
- 4:49that's what this looks like to me.
- 4:51Yeah, well, I would,
- 4:55if anyone knows me would agree,
- 4:57I'm pretty like particular
- 4:59about like the gym.
- 5:00So I like to keep it like
- 5:02really clean and tidy.
- 5:03And I kind of like every
- 5:05time someone goes into it,
- 5:07it should just look like a brand new gym,
- 5:09even like a year, year,
- 5:10year and a half old.
- 5:12And every picture I've seen of it,
- 5:14it is spotless clean.
- 5:15Yeah.
- 5:16And you have like a little
- 5:17lounge area too to just
- 5:18kind of relax with like an elk out.
- 5:22Yeah,
- 5:22we did like a little like chill out area.
- 5:24So like obviously your toilet, shower,
- 5:26kitchen area, just like fridge, microwave,
- 5:29coffee machine.
- 5:30And then we also have the
- 5:32big 12 seater sofa for
- 5:34people just to come high and chill.
- 5:37So my family don't even come
- 5:38into my house anymore.
- 5:39When my mum and dad and my
- 5:40niece and nephew come down,
- 5:42everyone's like, oh,
- 5:42can we go out and play in the gym?
- 5:44Well, my niece and nephew,
- 5:45not my mum and dad.
- 5:47So yes,
- 5:48it's quite a nice like social area
- 5:50as well.
- 5:52Yeah.
- 5:53I've been talking to Ariel
- 5:54Lowen and now she's
- 5:55building one and she wants
- 5:57to be like you when she grows up.
- 6:01Oh, I think I'm excited to see hers.
- 6:03I think hers is going to be
- 6:04called the Dan.
- 6:05So I'm excited to see hers finished.
- 6:07It'll be awesome as well.
- 6:08Yeah.
- 6:09On the outside, it looks very similar.
- 6:10Like the structure looks
- 6:12very similar to yours.
- 6:14So I'm excited to see how it
- 6:16all turns out.
- 6:17Yeah.
- 6:17I think they're taking a
- 6:18break from building during
- 6:20games training though.
- 6:22Yeah,
- 6:22I think I'll get divorced if I decide
- 6:24to build anything else.
- 6:29Yeah, it's awesome.
- 6:31And so when you train out there,
- 6:33are you alone most of the time?
- 6:36Do you have training
- 6:37partners that come out there a lot?
- 6:38Is it ever going to be an affiliate?
- 6:40And actually it is an
- 6:42affiliate and I have affiliated it,
- 6:44but it's just like a
- 6:45private affiliate just so
- 6:47basically I could do the
- 6:48open and obviously
- 6:50represent that the CrossFit Games,
- 6:51which is always been a
- 6:53dream to represent like my own gym.
- 6:56So that's pretty cool this year.
- 6:58But yeah, no,
- 6:59I have like a pretty good groups,
- 7:00you know, like I go.
- 7:01I still go to my original
- 7:04like Boundary Belfast like
- 7:06the affiliate down there.
- 7:07I train with a few of the
- 7:08guys that's on like my online program.
- 7:10I'm sharing with them every
- 7:11monday and then I've got
- 7:12like a couple of people
- 7:13come out and train with me
- 7:14on a tuesday wednesday and
- 7:15a friday so um so yeah it's
- 7:17quite nice I usually have
- 7:18some someone for one
- 7:20session a day no one really
- 7:21wants to do the second or
- 7:22third session but you know
- 7:25I don't blame them um and
- 7:27is it really close to your
- 7:28house or is it like on the
- 7:30I know you have pretty a
- 7:31lot of property too right
- 7:33Uh, yeah, like we, um, David, Steve,
- 7:36his parents were very
- 7:37grateful and to give us, uh,
- 7:39very kind and give us like,
- 7:40I think maybe we live on
- 7:41like three acres.
- 7:42So, um,
- 7:44so like the house is in the middle
- 7:45and literally my gym,
- 7:46I could throw a stone and I'm there.
- 7:50That's awesome.
- 7:52Did I, do I, do I remember right that, um,
- 7:54Peter from coffee pods and
- 7:55what's came out to your, um,
- 7:58your gym during quarters?
- 7:59yeah yeah yeah so he he he
- 8:02did a piece on my my ocd
- 8:04yeah and it was really cool
- 8:07kind of seeing because I
- 8:09think I think quarterfinals
- 8:11is the some of the best
- 8:13programmed portion of the
- 8:16season and most of the time
- 8:18we don't get to see it
- 8:19because it's done at home online yeah
- 8:22So I love these little like
- 8:24documentaries that people
- 8:25are doing with athletes.
- 8:27You can kind of get to see
- 8:28those really cool events.
- 8:30Oh yeah like as soon as
- 8:32Peter messaged me I think
- 8:33he messaged as soon as the
- 8:34dates come out and he was
- 8:35like can I come to yours
- 8:36for quarters I was like
- 8:38always I'm like that's
- 8:39awesome because again as
- 8:41you said like people don't
- 8:43get to see the online
- 8:44stages because you know
- 8:46yeah you don't really have
- 8:48time you can't set up like
- 8:50an extra camera for like a live because
- 8:52You know,
- 8:53you have to make sure you have a camera,
- 8:54a spare camera, and a spare, spare camera,
- 8:56you know?
- 8:57So, yeah,
- 8:59and it just is that little bit
- 9:00more stressful, I find,
- 9:01like the online stages.
- 9:03So,
- 9:03you don't even want people there just
- 9:05in case, like, you know,
- 9:07you want to go at one o'clock,
- 9:08but you don't feel good at one,
- 9:09and then you end up going at three,
- 9:11you know?
- 9:11Yeah.
- 9:13Kenny,
- 9:14this year has worked quite weird
- 9:15because we had such a long
- 9:17time to do them.
- 9:17I think it nearly made it worse.
- 9:19I quite like having a
- 9:21shorter space and it's just like, look,
- 9:22go get it done and get on
- 9:24with your weekend kind of thing.
- 9:25Yeah, yeah.
- 9:30I have conflicting views on
- 9:32the whole thing for events.
- 9:34It has to be so well programmed.
- 9:37Yeah.
- 9:37Um, to be able to make sure, cause you're,
- 9:40you're threading a needle
- 9:41from this big piece of yarn
- 9:43at the quarter kind of
- 9:44level to 40 people in Europe.
- 9:48And that is like a,
- 9:49such a deep pool of
- 9:51athletes and you only get to take 40.
- 9:54Like if that's not programmed, right?
- 9:56Like,
- 9:57you're going to miss on some people.
- 10:01Oh, for sure.
- 10:03My biggest concern this year
- 10:04was that they were going to
- 10:05throw 1RM in or something
- 10:09stupid like double
- 10:11crossover or something that
- 10:13was going to affect judging
- 10:15and counting and stuff, but like
- 10:18hats off to like Castro and balls.
- 10:20Like the walls were great.
- 10:22The minus the step up is
- 10:24probably a wee bit like of
- 10:26a touchy subject.
- 10:27Um, I like, I think,
- 10:29I think they were awesome.
- 10:30It definitely got the best
- 10:31people to the next stage.
- 10:33Um, and they were so well, so well rounded,
- 10:36which is great.
- 10:38The last couple of things on,
- 10:39on the home gym is I
- 10:41noticed a lot of purple accents.
- 10:44Was that intentional?
- 10:46Yeah, so like purple,
- 10:48like growing up would be like,
- 10:49would have been my favorite color.
- 10:52So we just kind of had like
- 10:53a couple of little like
- 10:55sprinkles of it in,
- 10:56but not kind of like overkill.
- 10:58So I wanted to keep everything really,
- 11:00really like just sort of
- 11:02like that dark gray and
- 11:04just like dark gray black.
- 11:07And then I came up with the idea.
- 11:09I was like, oh,
- 11:10the jayhooks would be quite
- 11:12cool with that metallic purple.
- 11:14And that would just be that
- 11:15small touch that would just set it off.
- 11:18It looks awesome.
- 11:20I love the way that purple sends off.
- 11:21And purple is one of my favorite colors.
- 11:23I used to do a job where I
- 11:25signed contracts all day.
- 11:27And so in order to make it
- 11:30look like it's a live signature,
- 11:33you can't use black ink.
- 11:35Yes.
- 11:36It could look like it's copied.
- 11:39And so I would use a purple
- 11:40pen to sign all my
- 11:41contracts so it was obvious
- 11:43it was a real signature.
- 11:45Yeah.
- 11:48And then with it being your
- 11:50space and you get to keep
- 11:51it as clean as you want it
- 11:53and everything in your place,
- 11:55what kind of comfort level
- 11:56does that give you every
- 11:58time you go in there?
- 12:00Honestly,
- 12:01it still doesn't even feel real
- 12:04that I have my own gym.
- 12:07Me and my husband,
- 12:08I would do my programming
- 12:09in there on a Sunday,
- 12:10and I usually clean the
- 12:12whole gym every Saturday,
- 12:14so just full deep clean.
- 12:16And you walk in on a Sunday morning,
- 12:18and it's just like, oh.
- 12:21I get so excited.
- 12:22I'm like, oh, it's still brand new,
- 12:24isn't it?
- 12:24It just makes me proud.
- 12:27Yeah, my gym just put in new flooring,
- 12:30got a bunch of new equipment.
- 12:31Man,
- 12:33there's nothing like the clean floor
- 12:34on a gym.
- 12:35Yeah, it definitely sets it all for sure.
- 12:39Yeah, it's great.
- 12:41So I want to get into a
- 12:42little bit of last year,
- 12:44which didn't end the way
- 12:46I'm guessing you wanted it
- 12:47to end at the games.
- 12:49No.
- 12:50And I heard rumor you were
- 12:52either sick or injured at
- 12:53the games last year.
- 12:55I did four vertebrae in my neck.
- 12:58Oh, that's awful.
- 13:01Yeah.
- 13:01It was, it was terrible.
- 13:03So what I've had,
- 13:05I've had 12 back procedures,
- 13:07but never up in my neck.
- 13:09Yeah.
- 13:10What was that?
- 13:11What was that feeling?
- 13:12Like you made it through the
- 13:14best you could.
- 13:15Yeah.
- 13:15Yeah.
- 13:18Yeah, no,
- 13:19so basically we think it all kind
- 13:22of like came from the rock
- 13:23ring muscle up event.
- 13:24So the so whenever I
- 13:27whenever I practice the
- 13:28rock event the very first
- 13:29time I actually did OK and
- 13:30I was like here we go like you know,
- 13:33because I was I was a little bit nervous.
- 13:35Obviously I don't do a lot of weighted
- 13:38muscle ups um so I was a
- 13:41little bit nervous it went
- 13:42fine I did well I got
- 13:44through it all I was like
- 13:45okay so we'll just refine
- 13:46this refine this and then
- 13:48the second time the
- 13:50following week I jumped up
- 13:51but I literally couldn't do
- 13:53one I was like
- 13:54what has happened in a week
- 13:56you know there was nothing
- 13:57like I didn't I didn't I
- 13:58didn't hurt it well not
- 14:00that I thought um and then
- 14:02we kind of every week
- 14:04leading in the semi-finals
- 14:06I got slightly worse and I
- 14:08was like what is going on
- 14:10but like I wasn't in pain
- 14:12like there was no pain that
- 14:13said like you're injured
- 14:15there just was something
- 14:17not right and so we powered on through
- 14:22And then I think it was I
- 14:25did my week off after semifinals.
- 14:27Then the following week we
- 14:28were doing like a
- 14:30reintroduction to training.
- 14:31So we were like started some
- 14:33strongman stuff and I put
- 14:37the yoke on my back and literally
- 14:41everything shut down like I
- 14:43literally I couldn't I
- 14:44couldn't move I couldn't
- 14:45walk like I could hardly
- 14:46walk I couldn't breathe
- 14:48like I literally couldn't
- 14:49lift my hands any further
- 14:50than like here I was like
- 14:53my husband was there like
- 14:54my camera girl was there
- 14:56and one of my friends were
- 14:57there and they were like
- 14:58What the hell has happened?
- 15:00So we kind of were in panic stations,
- 15:02obviously,
- 15:02because I couldn't drive for
- 15:05nearly 10 days.
- 15:06So everything was just a little bit scary.
- 15:08I stupidly wouldn't get an
- 15:10MRI because I was like, it'll settle.
- 15:13It'll be fine.
- 15:16I got on the flight.
- 15:17I went over to Briggs for
- 15:19the training camp.
- 15:20It was not fine, you know,
- 15:22and I kind of just did what I could do.
- 15:25And then everything started to get better.
- 15:27I was back up to like over
- 15:29an 80 kilo snatch.
- 15:30I was up to 105 clean and jerk.
- 15:32I was back doing muscle ups.
- 15:33I was back doing everything.
- 15:34I was like, all right, we're good.
- 15:37And then obviously, you know,
- 15:38as you kind of taper down,
- 15:40your volumes comes down.
- 15:41So the pain comes down.
- 15:42So I was like, I was like,
- 15:43started the competition in no pain.
- 15:46I was like, here we go.
- 15:48And got onto the bike event
- 15:50and I literally had no legs.
- 15:53And I was like,
- 15:53I couldn't like push the pedals.
- 15:55And I was like,
- 15:56Shit, maybe just first event, nerves, like,
- 16:00we'll ride that off, we'll go again.
- 16:02And then I can't remember
- 16:03what the next event was,
- 16:05but then we did wall balls
- 16:06and the pig flip.
- 16:08And literally the looking up
- 16:11from the wall balls,
- 16:12like completely whatever it did to the C4,
- 16:17the top of my neck,
- 16:19I started to lose all
- 16:20feeling in my left arm.
- 16:23So I was like, this isn't ideal.
- 16:25And then they announced the next event,
- 16:27which was freestanding handstand pushups.
- 16:29So then I started to land on my neck.
- 16:33So that wasn't ideal either.
- 16:36And then I think then the
- 16:38final straw was the sandbag
- 16:40resting on my neck.
- 16:43So it was kind of like a
- 16:44series of let's get a
- 16:46McQuaid out of the games,
- 16:47because it was like wall balls,
- 16:48handstand pushups,
- 16:49and then a 70 or 65 kilo
- 16:52sandbag compressing on my neck.
- 16:53So it was just kind of like
- 16:55the order of each event led
- 16:56into the next one that just made it worse,
- 16:59worse, worse.
- 17:00So yeah, after the sandbag event,
- 17:02I think Sam sort of seen my
- 17:04face and got me straight
- 17:06outside because I had no,
- 17:08completely couldn't move my left arm.
- 17:11I had no power.
- 17:12I couldn't even,
- 17:12I couldn't even have held
- 17:14my phone on my left hand.
- 17:15Like I was completely gone.
- 17:17I was starting to like,
- 17:19wasn't able to bring my
- 17:20feet back up again.
- 17:22So like I sort of like
- 17:25whatever was going on,
- 17:26I was sort of losing the signal.
- 17:28So went to the medic, checked me out.
- 17:31They were like, no, you're done.
- 17:32And sent me straight to hospital.
- 17:35Madison, Wisconsin Hospital got bloods,
- 17:37got CT scan.
- 17:40They were amazing.
- 17:41You know, like the medic team are like,
- 17:43I think no one,
- 17:45hopefully no one needs to use them.
- 17:46But if you do need to use
- 17:48the medic team at the games,
- 17:49like they are incredible.
- 17:51Like they just made sure
- 17:52like there wasn't a pinched nerve.
- 17:55You know, they did all the right things.
- 17:57You know,
- 17:58as soon as I told my physio what
- 17:59they've done, they were like, wow,
- 18:00like that's awesome.
- 18:02you know um then obviously
- 18:04flew home got an mri and
- 18:06then realized I had um
- 18:09like a bone deformity on C4
- 18:12and then I had like C4, 5,
- 18:146 and then down to T1 was all injured.
- 18:21So it's like still taking a
- 18:24bit of time to like get
- 18:26back into full training.
- 18:27And like I've only really
- 18:29got a yoke on my back two
- 18:30weeks ago for the first
- 18:32time from like the games,
- 18:34like from last year from the injury.
- 18:36and so it's a full year
- 18:38nearly to get get myself
- 18:39back to where I am now and
- 18:41that was just through rest
- 18:43no no surgery or anything
- 18:44no we rested so we actually
- 18:47we rested right up until
- 18:48like um sort of like
- 18:49September October and then
- 18:51we started to try our best
- 18:52to like intro training in
- 18:54and that didn't really work
- 18:56so it was nearly like
- 18:56December and then we made
- 18:59the decision I think it was
- 19:02the start of January we went
- 19:03back to the surgeon and we
- 19:05were like right how can I
- 19:06get this season done and he
- 19:09he did four cortisone
- 19:11injections in the each side
- 19:13of the vertebrae just to
- 19:15try and like settle I had
- 19:17like mass inflammation at that point so
- 19:19that's what was continuing
- 19:21to cause the pain and
- 19:22because we've done all like
- 19:23the you know like
- 19:25strengthening that we could
- 19:26do in the area and but the
- 19:28mass inflammation was
- 19:29stopping like me being able
- 19:31to fully lock out my arms
- 19:33and to be able to like
- 19:34press it to do a jerk or do
- 19:36whatever so we got the four
- 19:38cortisone injections either
- 19:39side of the spine and then
- 19:41like the pain started to to
- 19:43ease which then allowed me
- 19:45to help strengthen it even
- 19:46more and get back into training.
- 19:50So as an athlete,
- 19:51when these things are happening,
- 19:52you said you didn't get an MRI.
- 19:54Is it because, like,
- 19:56it's easier to push through
- 19:57when you don't know what it is?
- 19:58Yeah, I think so.
- 20:01I think so.
- 20:01I think if someone told me, like,
- 20:03I kind of, like,
- 20:04chipped a bone in my neck
- 20:05and I was going to be going
- 20:06into a competition with a chipped bone,
- 20:09I would be like, well,
- 20:10that's probably really
- 20:12stupid and I shouldn't do it.
- 20:13But if you aren't told you
- 20:15have a chipped bone in your
- 20:16neck and you're going to do more damage,
- 20:17you're like, well, sure.
- 20:20on not like don't recommend
- 20:24it don't do it but like
- 20:25yeah I did well and your
- 20:27very good friend sam briggs
- 20:29is very known for like
- 20:31pushing through pain is
- 20:33that something you two have in common
- 20:36taught me well I would say
- 20:40like from when I was a kid
- 20:42like obviously racing quad
- 20:43bikes and stuff I was 16 I
- 20:46broke my wrist I skated
- 20:48forward I chipped my
- 20:49tailbone in the same day
- 20:50and two weeks later I was
- 20:52back racing my quad bike I
- 20:53got my dad to cut my cast
- 20:55off so I was like it's
- 20:56either you're cutting it
- 20:57off or I am so he thought
- 20:59it was the responsible
- 21:00thing to do and he did it so you know I'm
- 21:05yeah I'm stubborn I'm gonna
- 21:06keep going until something
- 21:07falls off yeah that that's
- 21:11crazy like it my mom
- 21:12probably would have taken
- 21:13the keys to the quad bike
- 21:14so I couldn't have started
- 21:16yeah there's there was no
- 21:18stopping me I would have
- 21:19got my granddad or someone
- 21:20to take me to the racing so he knows
- 21:24i say that but I was a
- 21:25swimmer growing up and I
- 21:27broke my thumb my sophomore
- 21:29year in high school so 10th
- 21:30grade year and I they put a
- 21:32cast on it I swam three
- 21:34meets with the cast on and
- 21:37it probably ruined my
- 21:39stroke for the rest of my
- 21:40career but yeah but I just
- 21:42I was so stubborn I was
- 21:43gonna swim regardless yeah
- 21:45like it's getting one of
- 21:46those things like
- 21:48if you qualify for the CrossFit Games,
- 21:50you're going to the
- 21:51CrossFit Games and you're
- 21:52going to give it everything you have.
- 21:53And, you know,
- 21:54obviously it's so hard going
- 21:56out and knowing like, well,
- 21:58obviously every time I went out,
- 21:59I was like, you know, God, Chris,
- 22:01this one, like, I'll be fine.
- 22:02I'll be fine.
- 22:02And my body was just like, no, you're not,
- 22:05you know,
- 22:05but I went in with the mental
- 22:08attitude that I was going to,
- 22:10I was going to do well.
- 22:12So you talk about the medical team,
- 22:13which I started my CrossFit
- 22:16life in the sport as a volunteer.
- 22:19Those guys, the medical volunteers,
- 22:23I don't think people
- 22:23realize what high-end
- 22:25doctors give up a week of
- 22:27their vacation to go just
- 22:29hang out at the CrossFit
- 22:30games and help on the medical team.
- 22:34Yeah, it's incredible.
- 22:36Yeah, like hats off,
- 22:38obviously CrossFit have to
- 22:39organise all that as well.
- 22:41So hats off to them for
- 22:42making sure that obviously
- 22:44the athletes have the best
- 22:46possible like service of like of a team,
- 22:51you know, like.
- 22:52the um I don't know I can't
- 22:54remember the the guy that
- 22:55looked after me but like he
- 22:57was so on the ball like he
- 22:58was texting me like the
- 22:59next day he was like how
- 23:01are you can I come and see
- 23:02you or come over to the
- 23:04coliseum because they're in
- 23:05the coliseum um you know
- 23:07and like they have like
- 23:08they have an x-ray
- 23:10backstage in the coliseum
- 23:12as well which is like like
- 23:14what the frick like I never
- 23:16knew they had an x-ray
- 23:16machine that you know over
- 23:17there so like if someone
- 23:19like straight away
- 23:20obviously the x-ray you
- 23:22know just to make sure um
- 23:23and like it was it was an
- 23:26eye-opening experience
- 23:28obviously to be able to say
- 23:30like we're in good hands if
- 23:31something goes wrong yeah
- 23:34and you so you were
- 23:35medically withdrawn from
- 23:36the competition once yeah
- 23:38let's go numb that's scary
- 23:40yeah it was it was getting
- 23:42it was getting scary for sure
- 23:44what,
- 23:45so there's been a lot of talk over
- 23:46the last couple of years with,
- 23:48with Roman going back out
- 23:49on the floor with a broken foot and,
- 23:51you know, my gosh, Sam legendary going,
- 23:55playing through so much pain.
- 23:57What are your thoughts about
- 23:59medical withdrawals?
- 24:00Do you think it should be
- 24:00left up to the athlete or
- 24:02should medical have the
- 24:03authority to pull you from
- 24:05the competition?
- 24:06Um,
- 24:09At the end of the day, like, obviously,
- 24:11they're the professionals.
- 24:12I think, like, you're also an adult.
- 24:14So it's, like, a conversation is best had.
- 24:19And, like,
- 24:20as long as you're not going to
- 24:22damage yourself further for later life,
- 24:25you know, it's sort of 50-50.
- 24:28You know, if you're not... Like, for me,
- 24:31like, they were just like,
- 24:32you can't feel your hand.
- 24:34Like, you know,
- 24:35how are you meant to lift the barbell,
- 24:36et cetera, et cetera.
- 24:37So it's, like, the most...
- 24:39Like, how could I have competed?
- 24:41You know, kind of thing.
- 24:42But, you know,
- 24:43if I broke my finger and I'd be like,
- 24:45look, here, I'll be fine.
- 24:48You know, it's my finger kind of thing.
- 24:49You know,
- 24:50I think it's just like the injury
- 24:54will dictate whether the medical staff,
- 24:57you know,
- 24:57they'll know when to withdraw you.
- 24:59But I think like with Roman...
- 25:01You know, it was a night goal.
- 25:03I think like Briggs has,
- 25:06she competed one of the
- 25:07years at the regionals with it.
- 25:09Maybe it was like 2014 or 15 or something.
- 25:14She competed one of the
- 25:15years and she had done the
- 25:17exact same bit that Roman
- 25:19had done before.
- 25:21So like it was,
- 25:23it was significant at the time,
- 25:24but it wasn't like a, you know,
- 25:26a long-term threat for him to continue.
- 25:31I've talked to Emily Rolfe a lot.
- 25:33We documented her, her case where she was,
- 25:37she was pulled from medically,
- 25:39but she fought right up
- 25:40until the bitter end to get
- 25:41back out on the,
- 25:42on the competition floor.
- 25:43Yeah.
- 25:44And when the color started
- 25:45coming back in her arms, she's like, see,
- 25:47I'm good.
- 25:47I'm good.
- 25:48And finally they did an ultrasound,
- 25:51found out there was no
- 25:51blood flow and they're like, no, you,
- 25:54you can't.
- 25:55Yeah.
- 25:56It's a conversation.
- 25:57Yeah.
- 25:58Yeah.
- 25:59you know I think like the
- 26:00conversations had like
- 26:04uh-oh hopefully it's just
- 26:07her getting a call and
- 26:10she'll be back here in a
- 26:11second um but yeah love
- 26:19love that x there she is
- 26:21sorry that's okay that's my
- 26:23car ready oh my god where's the signal
- 26:29I've been doing this long enough.
- 26:31I can't hear you.
- 26:32Uh-oh.
- 26:38Can you hear me?
- 26:39I can hear you fine.
- 26:41I've lost the... There's no sign.
- 26:51So, Emma, can you go out and come back in?
- 27:05Can you hear me now?
- 27:06Can you hear me?
- 27:07I can hear you.
- 27:08Can you hear me?
- 27:09I can't hear you.
- 27:09Oh no.
- 27:10Whatever's happened.
- 27:12Oh no.
- 27:29I just sent you a, I sent you a message.
- 27:32Okay.
- 27:35Oh, we're back.
- 27:37Can you hear me?
- 27:38Yeah.
- 27:39Sorry.
- 27:39They were ringing up by my car.
- 27:43I've done this enough.
- 27:44I know like when someone's on a phone, if,
- 27:46if a call comes in,
- 27:47it like takes you out of our view.
- 27:50So your screen just goes
- 27:51black for a second.
- 27:53But I could see you and hear you.
- 27:55It just must've done
- 27:55something to your settings.
- 27:57Yeah.
- 27:58So yeah,
- 27:59I'm just ringing my car as in for
- 28:00service.
- 28:01So they're probably just
- 28:01telling me now it's ready.
- 28:04Okay.
- 28:06So,
- 28:07so you have that disappointing year at
- 28:09the games, how much,
- 28:13then what is the off season?
- 28:14Like you want to get back to it, right?
- 28:15You want to kind of erase
- 28:16the memory of that year and
- 28:19get back to a new season.
- 28:21How tough is the off season
- 28:22after that occurs?
- 28:25I think I really struggled
- 28:26quite a lot because there
- 28:27was so much uncertainty.
- 28:30There was no, like, you know,
- 28:31my physio was puzzled.
- 28:33My coach was puzzled.
- 28:34You know,
- 28:35we've never really dealt with
- 28:37this kind of injury before.
- 28:38There was no protocol.
- 28:42You know, it's not like, say,
- 28:44your shoulder.
- 28:45You know, it's like, okay, we're going to,
- 28:47six weeks we'll be able to do this, this,
- 28:49this, this, this,
- 28:50where I was just like waking up
- 28:53was like can I move my head
- 28:55oh today's a good day you
- 28:57know like can I do my hair
- 28:59oh that's a good day you
- 29:00know so um obviously it was
- 29:03like super stressful and
- 29:05annoying probably like my
- 29:07coach definitely earned his
- 29:08money this year um you know
- 29:10because like we we really
- 29:12had to speak nearly every
- 29:14day to every other day and
- 29:16like I have to admit training
- 29:19sucked because we couldn't
- 29:21really make changes to the
- 29:22program because we were trying to be like,
- 29:25OK, we can do this, this, this and this.
- 29:28So then it was nearly like
- 29:30you added one exercise a week, you know,
- 29:32just to make sure it wasn't this and this,
- 29:36you know, so like my strength was very,
- 29:38very, very, very the same,
- 29:40very repetitive, very boring.
- 29:41And then we just tried to add like, OK,
- 29:44that didn't aggravate the neck.
- 29:46So we'll continue that for a week.
- 29:47we'll add something else in.
- 29:49That didn't annoy it,
- 29:49we'll add something else in.
- 29:51You know, so it was just, it was crap,
- 29:55to be honest.
- 29:56Like, it wasn't enjoyable.
- 29:59I've honestly had probably
- 30:00the worst nine months of
- 30:01training of my life.
- 30:03But it's kind of one of those things that,
- 30:04like, it needed done.
- 30:07so yeah uh off season it
- 30:10wasn't it wasn't good but I
- 30:11was very good this year
- 30:13usually I would just block
- 30:14myself off go full dark not
- 30:18speak to anyone just be
- 30:20like look I can't share
- 30:21with you guys so you just
- 30:23go and have fun and but I
- 30:25was better at like trying
- 30:26to bring people in and
- 30:29even just do something with them,
- 30:31but I'm still doing my boring stuff.
- 30:34So I did,
- 30:35I did rely a lot more on people
- 30:38this off season,
- 30:40obviously to keep me sane.
- 30:41That's a, that's a big step.
- 30:43I know that I still struggle
- 30:44with that and I'm,
- 30:45I'm much older than you are.
- 30:46And I struggle when I'm,
- 30:49when I'm in those dark
- 30:49places of like not feeling
- 30:51good or not being injured,
- 30:53it's hard to ask for help
- 30:55and at hard to like be
- 30:56around people who are capable of
- 30:59Yeah,
- 30:59it's it's being around people because
- 31:01like they're getting to do fun.
- 31:03You know I I love I love
- 31:05going to an affiliate on a
- 31:06Saturday and doing like
- 31:07their class workout and
- 31:09just being a part of the
- 31:10community and throwing down
- 31:12and not be able to do that
- 31:13for nearly like nine months was hard.
- 31:16And so I just tried to make
- 31:18sure that I made the best out of my week.
- 31:21You know,
- 31:21like having even if it's just
- 31:22like one cardio session
- 31:24with this group of friends and.
- 31:25another cardio session with
- 31:26this group of friends.
- 31:27And then it didn't make
- 31:29Saturday feel as bad that I
- 31:31couldn't join in the community.
- 31:32Cause I kind of got a little
- 31:33bit of it during the week.
- 31:35Yeah.
- 31:36Yeah.
- 31:36Yeah.
- 31:36That makes sense.
- 31:37Um,
- 31:38so where was there ever a part where
- 31:40like the open comes and you're like,
- 31:42please don't have this movement or were,
- 31:46because I,
- 31:46you'd said earlier that there
- 31:47was some things you've just
- 31:49started doing a couple of weeks ago.
- 31:51Yeah, for sure.
- 31:53Yeah,
- 31:53well obviously like we knew like the
- 31:55sandbag and the yoke and
- 31:59you know weighted moss
- 31:59slops wasn't coming in the
- 32:01open so there wasn't that stress.
- 32:04Kind of the next stress was
- 32:06I was hoping there was no
- 32:071RMs again because I kind
- 32:09of hadn't got my numbers back up yet.
- 32:12I was very shocked that how
- 32:15bad the burpee over the dumbbell actually
- 32:19was for me because a bar
- 32:21facing burpee you can kind
- 32:23of like laterally step and
- 32:26it put my spine in a
- 32:27different position so I
- 32:28didn't realize I was weak
- 32:30um but the the burpee over
- 32:32the dumbbell where I had to
- 32:33go into like more of a
- 32:34hunch to get over that way
- 32:36so it was more in a hunch
- 32:37position was so weak for
- 32:40that part of my spine um so
- 32:43the first work I was actually very very
- 32:45humbling and an eye opener to realize, huh,
- 32:49we're still really weak in that position,
- 32:50you know, but again,
- 32:51I kind of think that it all
- 32:53kind of came at a nice stage, you know,
- 32:55so I was able to be like, okay,
- 32:57so we need to address this weakness.
- 32:59We started to work on that there,
- 33:00building that strength and
- 33:01that hunch position, that mid-back.
- 33:05the second workout then I
- 33:06was like right okay I have
- 33:07to express that I'm still
- 33:09fit I'm still capable so
- 33:11then that was actually
- 33:12quite a nice workout for me
- 33:13to then start to showcase
- 33:14like I'm still good enough
- 33:16to make the crossfit games
- 33:17again and then that for me
- 33:19was like the momentum that
- 33:21I needed so when you're
- 33:23when you're in the open you
- 33:24only need to make top 25
- 33:25which you can probably do
- 33:28at 50% or 70% or whatever, but,
- 33:32but you're getting data
- 33:33back to whether it's going
- 33:35to be a good season or bad season.
- 33:37Yeah, for sure.
- 33:37And so how much, and so week one,
- 33:40you get data back that, Ooh,
- 33:42we got to get better here.
- 33:43Week two though,
- 33:45you explode and you start
- 33:47feeling better and get some confidence.
- 33:49Did, did confidence once week two happened,
- 33:52keep growing over the
- 33:53season or did you have other setbacks?
- 33:56And no, we didn't have any setbacks,
- 33:58thankfully.
- 34:01No, like, yeah,
- 34:02I think it was just that week on week,
- 34:04just kept building that confidence,
- 34:06but also trying to like,
- 34:08you're building confidence,
- 34:09but you're like,
- 34:09don't get too far ahead of yourself,
- 34:11you know,
- 34:12because obviously once you start
- 34:13like building confidence,
- 34:15sometimes you can like, be like,
- 34:17I'm superhero, I can do everything again.
- 34:19So it was like still trying
- 34:20to hold yourself back.
- 34:21It's like, we're only started legs,
- 34:24rope climbs, muscle ups, et cetera.
- 34:26I don't even think I've done
- 34:28a handstand pushup.
- 34:30So I was just like,
- 34:31Just calm down, calm down,
- 34:33do what you can do and just
- 34:34keep building safely into the season.
- 34:38So then you get to
- 34:38semifinals and we've talked
- 34:40about already.
- 34:41Europe is so deep.
- 34:43So how much, I don't know how to,
- 34:50how much confidence do you
- 34:51have now in this deep field
- 34:53in Europe that you are
- 34:54going to make the games or is it,
- 34:56do you have to work your
- 34:58ass off to do it?
- 35:00As soon as the workouts
- 35:02actually came out and I tested them all,
- 35:04I was just like, like I was like, yeah,
- 35:07we're going back to the CrossFit Games.
- 35:08You know, like I was,
- 35:10I was just like really
- 35:11excited and they were all like pretty,
- 35:14like I wouldn't say there
- 35:15was any like home run workouts,
- 35:17but there were,
- 35:17there was no like real big
- 35:19bottleneck workouts for me.
- 35:21So I was really excited
- 35:23until Wednesday before and
- 35:25I took a tummy bug.
- 35:27Which wasn't good.
- 35:29So I actually ended up in
- 35:30bed for 18 hours sleeping
- 35:33on the Wednesday before semifinals.
- 35:36Wow, yeah, but.
- 35:39One of my lovely clients, I think,
- 35:41gave it to me because the week after,
- 35:44every single one of them were sick.
- 35:46So thanks to them,
- 35:48that nearly ruined my season.
- 35:51There's this unfortunate bug
- 35:52that has actually hit the
- 35:54whole of Northern Ireland.
- 35:57People were going down left,
- 35:59right and centre.
- 36:00So it was a really
- 36:01aggressive 48-hour tummy bug.
- 36:04And you had a very consistent semifinal.
- 36:08Yeah, it just was survival.
- 36:13Other than event four,
- 36:14and was it because you were
- 36:16sick or have you not been inverted a lot?
- 36:18Because that was the row handstand walk,
- 36:20right?
- 36:21Yeah,
- 36:22at that point I panicked because
- 36:23that's what I said to my coach, Joyce.
- 36:26I was like, I was so flat.
- 36:31The last meal I had was
- 36:32Tuesday night and this was
- 36:34obviously Sunday.
- 36:35So by Sunday, I felt great,
- 36:39but I had nothing in me.
- 36:43like I literally was living
- 36:45on Coca-Cola and uh Imodium
- 36:49for the for the three days
- 36:52so like there was just
- 36:53nothing in my body so like
- 36:55I actually was so flat on
- 36:56the Sunday morning but
- 36:58thankfully we had like I
- 36:59think we had like maybe two
- 37:00and a half hour gap we went
- 37:02straight back to the hotel
- 37:03I went straight to bed um and then
- 37:07I force fed like a bagel
- 37:08with like jam because I
- 37:10knew we had the snatch
- 37:11workout so I was thinking
- 37:12about fueling for the next
- 37:13workout for the final so I
- 37:15like force fed bagel jam
- 37:17banana and I think my
- 37:20sister went and got me like
- 37:22more like fruit so like I
- 37:24actually had some solids in
- 37:25me then for the rest of the
- 37:27Sunday um were yeah the
- 37:29Sunday morning I I was dead no I was yeah
- 37:34So with the snatch workout,
- 37:36was there any worry there
- 37:37with your neck or have you
- 37:38been snatching?
- 37:39Oh,
- 37:40there was worry because I've only hit
- 37:4280 kilo snatch once from
- 37:45last year's games training
- 37:47from I hurt my neck.
- 37:48So there was,
- 37:49but thankfully the way Europe lanes were,
- 37:54my coach was actually able
- 37:56to be quite close because I
- 37:57was on the outer lane and I
- 38:00told him to walk along the
- 38:01lane and just shout, go.
- 38:04want me to lift and that's what I did.
- 38:06I just went complete zombie mode.
- 38:08You know,
- 38:08like obviously just not usually
- 38:10like I don't need anyone
- 38:11because I'm like so focused,
- 38:13but I just was a bit like
- 38:15foggy so I just literally
- 38:17shut off and I was like all
- 38:19I have to do is snatch as
- 38:20soon as I hear go.
- 38:22Go and that's what I did.
- 38:25So I just I didn't even
- 38:26think I didn't think about the weight.
- 38:27All I heard was go.
- 38:30I'm so envious of the
- 38:32European semifinal because
- 38:34I think because there's so
- 38:35many different countries
- 38:36represented in one event
- 38:39and there's national pride
- 38:42along with like your
- 38:42favorite CrossFitter.
- 38:44It gets so loud and so insane.
- 38:48I'd love to go to one someday.
- 38:51It's just so cool.
- 38:53Yeah, like this year,
- 38:55like I just remember being
- 38:56on the floor with Andrea
- 38:58Soulsberg and the whole
- 39:00crowd like clapping,
- 39:03shouting for her to get
- 39:04that final snatch bar.
- 39:06I mean, it was, it was mental.
- 39:10It was so, so good.
- 39:11Like I haven't seen a
- 39:12semifinals with the
- 39:14atmosphere that we had this year.
- 39:17When any French athlete took the floor,
- 39:19it was insane.
- 39:20Oh, wow.
- 39:21The drums going was crazy.
- 39:24Yeah.
- 39:25Yeah.
- 39:25I wish we had that in the United States,
- 39:27but because we're all one country,
- 39:30it's really just you're
- 39:31rooting for your favorite athlete.
- 39:32Yeah.
- 39:33Yeah.
- 39:34It's different.
- 39:35Yeah.
- 39:35It just doesn't have that same intensity.
- 39:39So the last event, I don't think...
- 39:42I think Boz has been asked, like,
- 39:44did you test this,
- 39:46the length of that lunge?
- 39:47And he said no.
- 39:48Okay.
- 39:51But yet it was like the
- 39:52perfect length that some
- 39:54people were going to make it,
- 39:55some people weren't,
- 39:57and it devastated some people.
- 40:00oh my God, like that, it was just like,
- 40:03you didn't know who was going to get in,
- 40:05you know, it did leave it quite exciting,
- 40:07you know,
- 40:08but it was also very scary for
- 40:10an athlete.
- 40:10You're like, am I going to make it?
- 40:12Yeah.
- 40:13Yeah.
- 40:13Did you have a strategy to that?
- 40:15Because like when we're calm
- 40:18on the sidelines as media people,
- 40:20you're like,
- 40:20all they have to do is finish
- 40:22like top 15 and they're in
- 40:24just set the dumbbells down.
- 40:27shake it out and go and
- 40:28you're only costing
- 40:29yourself a couple seconds
- 40:30but if you drop them and
- 40:32then have to pick them up
- 40:33and take them back that's
- 40:35like a 20 second minimum yeah
- 40:39Yeah, no, I had a plan.
- 40:40You know, I knew my bike PSI.
- 40:43I knew I was going 10 and
- 40:44five on the rings and yeah,
- 40:46I knew I was going on
- 40:47broken on the on the lunch.
- 40:50We did kind of think before
- 40:53I watched the previous heat
- 40:55we were just like forget
- 40:56what we just take a risk
- 40:57and go for blow going
- 40:58broken and then I seen
- 41:00multiple athletes feel the
- 41:02lunch and I was like 10 and five.
- 41:04We're not taking no risks.
- 41:06Don't need to be a superhero.
- 41:07Let's just get the job done.
- 41:09You know,
- 41:09because obviously like it was a
- 41:10good workout for me and my gymnastics.
- 41:12And even though it's not as
- 41:14strong as what it was previously,
- 41:16the neck injury,
- 41:17it's still getting back to where it was.
- 41:20And week on week we're getting stronger.
- 41:23So like I would have been fairly confident,
- 41:25you know, I could have went unbroken.
- 41:26But then I was like,
- 41:27for just that last section
- 41:30would have been would have
- 41:30been getting Bernie.
- 41:31So I was like,
- 41:31there's no point taking a
- 41:34risk when I know I can finish this,
- 41:36you know, sub four.
- 41:38Yeah.
- 41:38Yeah.
- 41:39It was so much fun to watch, but it,
- 41:42my heart broke for some of
- 41:43the athletes that just,
- 41:44they went from a qualifying
- 41:46position to out.
- 41:48Yeah.
- 41:49Some people went from like a
- 41:52good bit out to like jumping in.
- 41:54Like that was the craziest bit.
- 41:57Yeah.
- 41:57It was crazy.
- 41:58And in Europe and North America,
- 42:00both they're so deep that
- 42:02like that can happen.
- 42:04Yeah.
- 42:05Oh, it's crazy.
- 42:06But it, you know, obviously it keeps,
- 42:09it keeps it,
- 42:10it keeps the excitement as well, you know,
- 42:11right to the end.
- 42:12Like the, it wasn't,
- 42:14nothing was confirmed until,
- 42:16till that final event, you know,
- 42:17for most sort of people.
- 42:20So I want to dive in.
- 42:21You're going back to the CrossFit games.
- 42:23You've, you've made it through the year.
- 42:25You're,
- 42:26you're getting back to full
- 42:27strength again.
- 42:28How excited are you to go to
- 42:30the new venue in Texas?
- 42:32Yeah, no, I'm absolutely buzzing.
- 42:35I go out on the 24th, 25th of July now,
- 42:39out to Fort Worth.
- 42:40So I'll be out there sort of like, what,
- 42:43two and a half weeks leading in.
- 42:44So yeah,
- 42:45I'm really excited to see the venue,
- 42:48see around it,
- 42:49like just get familiar with Texas.
- 42:52Yeah, it's going to be awesome.
- 42:54Not looking forward to the heat, but like,
- 42:56yeah,
- 42:56it's going to be a scene for everyone.
- 42:58Are you doing anything to
- 42:59try to acclimate to the heat?
- 43:01like I bought sauna so like
- 43:04I'm in the sauna every
- 43:05night like that's all I can
- 43:06do like we live in we live
- 43:08in Northern Ireland we've
- 43:09got like a freaking storm
- 43:12coming back in it's cold
- 43:13again we've got jumpers
- 43:15back on again it's it's
- 43:17yeah unfortunately living
- 43:18living here where we've got
- 43:20more rain and then we do
- 43:22sunshine it's it's hard to prep
- 43:25Yeah.
- 43:25I heard, um,
- 43:27yellow host to say in an interview,
- 43:29I think yesterday he puts
- 43:31his biker in the sauna.
- 43:33Yeah.
- 43:34My coach is on about doing that next week.
- 43:36So yeah,
- 43:37we're going to give that a go just
- 43:39to kind of, you know,
- 43:40work out somewhat in the,
- 43:42in a hot environment.
- 43:44Um,
- 43:46it's going to be horrible
- 43:47but yeah that's the plan
- 43:49next week we're going to
- 43:49give that a go so I've been
- 43:51in the sauna now every day
- 43:52for two weeks just trying
- 43:54to do like 20 minutes and
- 43:56then next week for two
- 43:57weeks we'll do we'll try
- 43:59and do you know at least at
- 44:01least 10 minutes of like
- 44:03exercise in the sauna yeah
- 44:06I think have you scheduled
- 44:08your interview with Dave
- 44:09Castro yet no not yet so
- 44:12have you watched any of them
- 44:14Yeah, yeah.
- 44:15They're really good.
- 44:16Yeah,
- 44:17I think he's leaking information in them,
- 44:19which is making them almost
- 44:20essential to watch.
- 44:22I think he said with Danny
- 44:23Spiegel yesterday that the
- 44:25full kind of overall
- 44:26picture of inside-outside
- 44:29will be released within the next week.
- 44:31Okay.
- 44:32Yeah.
- 44:34Which then will tell us how
- 44:35much is truly out in the
- 44:36heat and how much is inside the arena.
- 44:39Yeah.
- 44:40And I think as an athlete,
- 44:42that's something I'd really want to know.
- 44:44Yeah, like, you know,
- 44:47it's more worrying for the
- 44:48athletes that don't live in
- 44:50America where they've got, like, you know,
- 44:52good weather.
- 44:53Obviously,
- 44:54a lot of the Europeans do suffer, like,
- 44:57you know, with the heat stroke or,
- 44:59you know,
- 44:59just being able to actually
- 45:00perform in the heat.
- 45:01So it would give you a bit more confidence,
- 45:04you know, when you're training that,
- 45:05you know, like, okay,
- 45:06it's three events outside.
- 45:08All right, like...
- 45:09if you need to that's the
- 45:10three events where you kind
- 45:11of have to go or just be a
- 45:13little bit more careful you
- 45:14know that you can't redline
- 45:16and potentially ruin the
- 45:17rest of your weekend or
- 45:18something yeah yeah that
- 45:20makes complete sense and I
- 45:22think the other big news he
- 45:23announced over the weekend
- 45:24was uh possibly a workout
- 45:27will be announced today today today
- 45:32I didn't hear that.
- 45:34I can't remember who's there.
- 45:36There's so many of them now.
- 45:37It's harder to remember
- 45:38which one was which, but I think that,
- 45:41and the,
- 45:41what I heard is the last time
- 45:43they announced a workout on
- 45:44the 4th of July for here in
- 45:46America is it was Murph.
- 45:51Murph ran that wrong track
- 45:53on the Friday night.
- 45:55I can't see them doing Murph in that heat.
- 46:00in 2015 with Annie and Cara
- 46:03and all of that I can't see
- 46:06them doing that again yeah
- 46:08it would be it would be
- 46:09hard but like a like a
- 46:10swimming version of like
- 46:11Murph would be pretty cool
- 46:15that would be pretty cool
- 46:16that might be on the cards
- 46:18800 meter swim from the
- 46:18side of the pool 800 meter
- 46:20swim or 400 meter swim probably yeah
- 46:28That would be sweet.
- 46:30So that's my prediction.
- 46:33Yeah.
- 46:34I like it.
- 46:35I like it.
- 46:35I love swimming events.
- 46:37Um,
- 46:38so it was also announced that Dave has
- 46:40primarily done the
- 46:41programming for this year.
- 46:43Yep.
- 46:43I think not primarily.
- 46:45He has done all of the
- 46:46programming for individuals this year.
- 46:48Boz is doing the teams.
- 46:50Yeah.
- 46:50So does that give you a
- 46:52playbook as to what you may see or, um,
- 46:57I kind of like, I think Boz's style,
- 47:00everyone agrees,
- 47:00very different to Dave's.
- 47:03Boz likes a lot more like
- 47:05party tricks kind of thing
- 47:06is the only way I can describe it.
- 47:08Like he likes more like the
- 47:10pirouettes and the
- 47:12pullovers and double
- 47:13crossovers and kind of all that stuff.
- 47:15And I kind of felt like it
- 47:16was nearly taken away from
- 47:19showcasing the athletes
- 47:21versus like he was trying
- 47:22to nearly expose the athletes.
- 47:24Yeah.
- 47:25But with Dave,
- 47:26Dave's all about the show
- 47:28and Dave loves to showcase the athletes.
- 47:30And I think that definitely
- 47:31reflected the programming
- 47:33in the likes of the
- 47:34semifinals because it was a show.
- 47:38And even like the
- 47:38quarterfinals and the Open.
- 47:40So it makes me more excited
- 47:43to go back to the games
- 47:44knowing that Dave is programming.
- 47:47Yeah,
- 47:48I think the programming has been very
- 47:49good this year.
- 47:50That quarterfinal workout
- 47:51with the Clean and Jerks.
- 47:53That was so good.
- 47:55that's the one I wish we
- 47:57could see like that's one
- 47:58that like would be really
- 48:00fun to see side by side oh
- 48:02like it it was so much fun
- 48:05I'm like I did that by
- 48:07myself in the gym like I
- 48:08would love to be in the
- 48:09race doing that workout you
- 48:11know like ascending the bar
- 48:13forward every 10 reps you
- 48:14know like wow so so good
- 48:17yeah it would have been
- 48:18awesome live um yeah
- 48:20I, I, with everybody, like,
- 48:23I'm sure you've seen it.
- 48:24Like Savan did the thing
- 48:26with the four athletes
- 48:27where they did
- 48:28quarterfinals live every
- 48:30workout and they got prize
- 48:32money for that.
- 48:33$5,000 to $1,000.
- 48:34And yeah,
- 48:36you know,
- 48:36there's the kill Taylor and
- 48:38there's reps ahead now.
- 48:40And there's all these little
- 48:41shoot offs now coming where
- 48:43athletes can earn prize
- 48:45money and do like head to
- 48:46head competitions.
- 48:47Do you think that's the way
- 48:49the sport's going to grow going forward?
- 48:52Um,
- 48:53like it's definitely going to help the
- 48:55sport grow, you know,
- 48:56because it's getting more exposure, um,
- 48:59online so it's getting an
- 49:01online presence that people
- 49:03can actually watch it and
- 49:04say like oh what is that
- 49:05kill Taylor you know and
- 49:07they go on and they talk
- 49:08about it they do the
- 49:09workout you know like
- 49:11anyone can ring in that's
- 49:12so cool you know it's not
- 49:14just for the elite athletes
- 49:15so it's making it so that
- 49:17you can people can
- 49:20showcase their fitness maybe
- 49:21they don't know how good
- 49:22they are and they're like
- 49:23oh you know what I'm gonna
- 49:24ring into that show one day
- 49:25and then they get like the
- 49:27urge to start competing or
- 49:28sign up for the open or you
- 49:30know whatever I think I
- 49:31think the more the more
- 49:33crossfit's out there the
- 49:34more people's talking about
- 49:35the sport more people's
- 49:36getting involved in the
- 49:37sport the bigger it's gonna
- 49:38be yeah I think anytime where we can like
- 49:43package it smaller to show
- 49:45people that don't know what it is.
- 49:47Yeah.
- 49:48When you look at the semifinals or games,
- 49:49it's a long weekend and to,
- 49:51to get someone to invest in
- 49:53three or four days who have
- 49:54never seen it before is hard.
- 49:56Yeah.
- 49:57Or kill Taylor.
- 49:58It's an hour on a Saturday.
- 49:59Yeah.
- 50:00We'll check it out.
- 50:01Right.
- 50:02Or,
- 50:02or reps ahead was done in an hour and a
- 50:05half with five events.
- 50:07Yeah.
- 50:08You know, that's pretty cool.
- 50:10Yeah,
- 50:11and I think you know like that's
- 50:13that's more like what
- 50:14people want now because you
- 50:16know no one really has the
- 50:18time or the money to be
- 50:20away from work for three days.
- 50:23you know, if, if,
- 50:24if they're working person,
- 50:25which 98% of the world is, you know,
- 50:29so it's like to go and say, Oh,
- 50:31I'm going to do a competition.
- 50:32It's three days.
- 50:33You're like three days.
- 50:34Like I have to take a Friday
- 50:35off work and potentially a Monday,
- 50:37you know, like financially,
- 50:38it's not really possible for most people.
- 50:39So it's like, Oh,
- 50:41I'll go and do something else.
- 50:43Yeah.
- 50:44Let's go.
- 50:45We beast.
- 50:46Thank you.
- 50:47Um,
- 50:48and I think it's a way for people to
- 50:50start to know, um,
- 50:52not just the top 10 athletes,
- 50:54but the rest of the field, right?
- 50:57To get these opportunities
- 50:58to call in to kill Taylor
- 50:59or to do a reps ahead and
- 51:02do a head-to-head with a games athlete.
- 51:05I think that's pretty cool.
- 51:06And it gives them the
- 51:08exposure that they wouldn't
- 51:09get otherwise.
- 51:10yeah oh definitely like it's
- 51:12it's so so good um you know
- 51:14obviously watching watching
- 51:16savant uh obviously put on
- 51:18that quarterfinal I was
- 51:18like that was that was
- 51:19brilliant because I had on
- 51:21the big tv in the gym you
- 51:22know in between our
- 51:23workouts and stuff so um
- 51:26like I just think stuff
- 51:27like that's awesome the
- 51:28more we can get the sport
- 51:29out there the better would
- 51:31would you ever do that
- 51:35like go on to one of those
- 51:37yeah obviously it's just
- 51:39crap because obviously I'm
- 51:41here so the availability to
- 51:44go and do that you know
- 51:46it's going to be so much
- 51:47easier for like the
- 51:48Americans you know to
- 51:48travel to do that but if
- 51:50they ever came like Europe
- 51:52side like and did something
- 51:53like that like I would be all for it
- 51:56And it could even be done
- 51:57like Rogue did back in COVID, right?
- 52:00Like everybody just has a
- 52:01camera in their gym and
- 52:03there's like a split screen
- 52:04of four people going.
- 52:05Yeah, yeah, yeah.
- 52:07You know?
- 52:07Because that worked so well.
- 52:09You know,
- 52:09like Rogue did a fantastic job of that.
- 52:12Yeah, I actually was a judge during Rogue.
- 52:14And I was with Saxon Pancheck.
- 52:17And the production behind that,
- 52:19they were so freaking good.
- 52:22yeah like it was it was so
- 52:24good to watch you know like
- 52:26the definitely put on a
- 52:27show yeah like every judge
- 52:29had an earpiece in with the
- 52:31head judge like being able
- 52:34to whisper in your ear
- 52:35saying hey watch this or
- 52:36watch that or it was
- 52:39phenomenal yeah that's so
- 52:41good rogue are just like
- 52:43another level now another
- 52:44level up on everyone else to be fair now
- 52:47Yeah, it was.
- 52:49The reason I asked if you'd
- 52:50be willing is Carolyn
- 52:51Prevost does a show with me
- 52:52on Sunday nights.
- 52:54She didn't think women would
- 52:57be as inclined to do quarterfinals.
- 52:59Did they like to keep their
- 53:00scores closer to the vest than men do?
- 53:04I don't really think that's the case.
- 53:07I would say I would talk to
- 53:10a lot of the girls and a
- 53:12lot would share scores.
- 53:14Probably a lot more than
- 53:16A lot more like probably Americans.
- 53:20Americans and the Canadians
- 53:21I speak with during quarterfinals.
- 53:24I would say probably the
- 53:25Europe may hold their cards
- 53:27a bit closer to their chest.
- 53:28But again,
- 53:29it's because Europe's so
- 53:30freaking stacked.
- 53:32Yeah.
- 53:32You know,
- 53:33you can't really give a point away,
- 53:34you know.
- 53:34Yeah.
- 53:36Yeah,
- 53:36I'd love to do something with
- 53:37quarterfinals next year.
- 53:38I'm just trying to figure
- 53:39out how to do it.
- 53:40Like,
- 53:41could we do it rogue style or could
- 53:42we do it, you know,
- 53:44not have to make people
- 53:45travel yet and still get to
- 53:47do their workouts at their home gym?
- 53:49Yeah, definitely.
- 53:50That could be really cool.
- 53:52Yeah.
- 53:53Well, to finish up,
- 53:55you're heading back to Texas.
- 53:57You are heading to the games in Texas.
- 53:59What is your goal this year?
- 54:01And is it results-based or
- 54:02is it just how you want to perform?
- 54:05Yeah, no, for me,
- 54:06it's literally just going
- 54:08and like bringing it back
- 54:10to like that first year,
- 54:12just go have fun.
- 54:14Soak it all up, like actually taking,
- 54:18walking out onto the floor again,
- 54:20you know,
- 54:20like here in the crowd and just
- 54:23be there and enjoy it.
- 54:25And I think the results will
- 54:27take care of themselves
- 54:28when I'm having fun.
- 54:29So I'm not, I'm not impressed on myself.
- 54:32I don't care.
- 54:32I genuinely like it sounds so bad,
- 54:35but in a way I don't care
- 54:37if I finish like first
- 54:39place or 40th place,
- 54:41I've made my goal for the
- 54:42year of making it back to the game.
- 54:44So I want to go now and just,
- 54:46just perform on people to be like,
- 54:49that's a happy McQuaid back
- 54:50out in that floor again.
- 54:52Cause last year I wasn't
- 54:53happy cause I was in pain.
- 54:56The arena's double the size of Madison.
- 55:00They have a cool Jumbotron
- 55:02that has screens inside and outside.
- 55:05So if you're under it,
- 55:06you can look up inside and
- 55:08see the screens.
- 55:10It was built in 2019, I think.
- 55:13Yeah, so it's fairly state-of-the-art.
- 55:17Yeah.
- 55:18Heather Lawrence told me
- 55:19it's basically plug-and-play.
- 55:20They pull up a truck, plug in a cord,
- 55:23and they're good to go.
- 55:24Amazing.
- 55:25Yeah.
- 55:26It's, it's, it's going to be awesome.
- 55:27Like I'm, I'm so excited.
- 55:29Like all the little tasers,
- 55:30the Friday night venue, like, Oh,
- 55:32it just gives you goosebumps.
- 55:33Do you have,
- 55:34do you have any ideas of what
- 55:35that Friday night thing is?
- 55:37I think what should be
- 55:39really cool would be like a
- 55:41running strongman medley so
- 55:44it's like you get to use
- 55:45like the running track but
- 55:47then you also get to use
- 55:48the football field so it's
- 55:50like maybe like a yoke
- 55:51carry one lap run a farmers
- 55:54carry one lap run it could
- 55:57be like farmers handles
- 56:00whatever a pig flip you
- 56:02know like you have to do a
- 56:02strongman medley but you
- 56:04have to be fit yeah
- 56:06well I like that idea my I
- 56:09volunteered at the games
- 56:10and worked out the outdoor
- 56:11park when strongman's fear
- 56:13was done with the yoke and
- 56:15the big viking yeah and the
- 56:19sled um and that was a
- 56:21blast to watch and if you
- 56:23added a run in between that
- 56:25because they were handstand
- 56:26walks between handstand
- 56:27walks as well so it's like
- 56:28take the handstand walk and
- 56:30make our lungs bleed
- 56:32Yeah, yeah.
- 56:33I've heard someone say a
- 56:35repeat of the 2010 Double Helen.
- 56:38Double Helen Pyramid.
- 56:43It was actually done on a track.
- 56:44It was done on a track and
- 56:46they put pull-up bars out.
- 56:48Oh, yeah.
- 56:49And then it was instead of kettlebells,
- 56:51it was like, uh,
- 56:52dumbbells or shouldered
- 56:53overhead or something like that.
- 56:56Yeah.
- 56:57It'd be cool to incorporate
- 56:58the run on track, you know,
- 56:59because it is the exact distance,
- 57:02you know, where obviously you're like,
- 57:03you know, sometimes it's like $400,
- 57:05actually a 350, you know, or 420,
- 57:07you know,
- 57:09so you can't cheat a run on track.
- 57:12Yeah.
- 57:12And we haven't been on a
- 57:13running track since 2010.
- 57:14Yeah.
- 57:14It'd be so cool.
- 57:17Yeah, and it's right there.
- 57:19Well, this has been a blast, Emma,
- 57:20as always.
- 57:22Let's not make it two years
- 57:23before we chat again.
- 57:24Yeah.
- 57:25But it's cool that we did it two years,
- 57:27almost to the day of your first time on.
- 57:30It's been awesome.
- 57:31Thank you to everybody in
- 57:32the chat for being here.
- 57:33And with that,
- 57:35we'll see everybody next
- 57:36time on Clydesdale Media Podcast.
- 57:39Bye, guys.
- 57:40Bye.
