- 0:00I wonder if you've ever thought about what it means to have a a
- 0:05surefire successful ministry. How would you define that?
- 0:15What would that look like in in your mind?
- 0:19What would a sensational ministry look like?
- 0:26As I was thinking about that this week, I I came up with some
- 0:30some principles that will help you define and articulate a
- 0:37successful ministry. Number one, if you would like to
- 0:46have a, a successful ministry, make sure that you never go to
- 0:56where the people are. You make them come to you.
- 1:02And when they come to you, they they go to the most inconvenient
- 1:10spots possible. In fact, when they come to you,
- 1:16make sure that there are no conveniences.
- 1:22So when they sit, they had to sit on the ground or the asphalt
- 1:27or the grass or the sand or the dirt.
- 1:32Make sure there are no chairs. Make sure there are no umbrellas
- 1:37for when it's hot. You want them to experience the
- 1:39heat of the sun when it's cold. After all, they can always wrap
- 1:44themselves in something warm. After all, you don't want to
- 1:47minister to weak infant and people, You want them to be
- 1:51strong. If it rains, no big deal, they
- 1:54won't melt. Let the rain pour down upon
- 1:57their head. This is a surefire way to have a
- 2:02successful ministry #2 deliberately wear things that
- 2:14are unattractive. Never wear the things that are
- 2:19truly in and cool and everyone adores.
- 2:25Make sure you wear things that are completely out of the
- 2:28ordinary. In fact, the smellier they are,
- 2:32the better they are. Fill your your clothes with with
- 2:39animal skins and the smellier the better.
- 2:44And when you gather people together and you have a potluck,
- 2:48make sure you take insects and you wrap them in pure honey and
- 2:54pass them out to everyone who is hungry.
- 2:57This is a surefire way of having a successful ministry #3 make
- 3:07sure that when you speak, you always speak offensively.
- 3:13Make sure that you assault and insult all of your listeners.
- 3:20Make sure they are greatly offended every time you speak.
- 3:26A perfect sermon would be simply what in the world are you doing
- 3:34here? Why would you even come here?
- 3:38You people who think you're better than everybody else,
- 3:43That's a surefire way of having a successful ministry.
- 3:50And then make sure that you always expose and embarrass
- 3:56every top government official, you know, make sure you expose
- 4:03every hidden sin, everything they're trying to keep away from
- 4:06the public. Put it out there for everybody
- 4:10to hear it and to know how wicked your leaders are,
- 4:14especially in private. And then make sure you only
- 4:23minister for a very, very short time.
- 4:29Don't, don't go beyond 18 months.
- 4:32A year is good, maybe 18 months, but don't go beyond that.
- 4:38And then and then when it's all said and done, when all these
- 4:43people are coming to you, because if you follow these
- 4:46guidelines, you will have a surefire successful ministry.
- 4:52And because all these people are coming to you, make sure that
- 4:55you pass them off to another preacher down the road.
- 5:03That's a, a guaranteed great ministry.
- 5:12And you would think that the elevator in my brain doesn't go
- 5:18to the top floor. You would think that your pastor
- 5:21has snapped the twig, but that's not the case.
- 5:27Because you see, that was the ministry of of John the Baptist,
- 5:34of whom it was said among those born of a woman, there has not
- 5:40arisen anyone greater than John the Baptist.
- 5:47He may have been unconventional, he may have been strange, but he
- 5:56was extremely effective. He wrote the book on successful
- 6:04ministry because there was never a preacher like him.
- 6:11There was never a prophet like him.
- 6:15He was the best ever. And yet we think of those things
- 6:20and say, who in their right mind would ever do what John did?
- 6:26And then we wonder why our ministries are unsuccessful and
- 6:31not successful. Interesting.
- 6:37But what was it that made John great?
- 6:42Was it his methodology? No, no, it was the man himself
- 6:51that made the ministry great. It wasn't the methods that he
- 6:56used. It was the call of God up on his
- 7:00life. So the Bible says, and John one
- 7:07verse number six, there came a man and we're going to stop
- 7:15right there. We're not going to get any
- 7:17further in the verse. Just simply there came a man
- 7:27sent from God. What kind of man was he?
- 7:34He was not an ordinary man. He was an extraordinary man.
- 7:41He was a man unlike any other man.
- 7:46He was a man that was unparalleled to any other man.
- 7:53And so over this week and next week and the week following, at
- 7:59least, I want to help you understand the identity of this
- 8:03man. And then I want you to
- 8:06understand, understand the ministry of this man, the
- 8:13testimony of this man, and the legacy of this man.
- 8:21After all, of all the men born of a woman, he's the greatest.
- 8:26So best we know his identity, his ministry, his testimony and
- 8:31his legacy. But before we do all of that,
- 8:36there's something else you need to know, and that is the
- 8:42peculiarity of the man. What made him so peculiar?
- 8:50What made him the way he is? And I want to give you 8
- 8:57principles that will help you understand why this man John was
- 9:04so peculiar, so unique, so extraordinary.
- 9:10And then, and then if you're a man in the audience, I want you
- 9:13to match your life against his life.
- 9:19Because after all, of all the men born of a woman, he's the
- 9:23greatest. So if you want to be great,
- 9:25match your life against John's life, the greatest man ever born
- 9:28of a woman. And then you can understand
- 9:31whether or not you are ever going to be great or whether or
- 9:34not you will ever have a successful ministry.
- 9:39Because you see, John is the barometer for greatness and the
- 9:42barometer for a successful ministry.
- 9:47And so you need to be able to compare yourself to the
- 9:50standards of the Scriptures. What does the Bible say about
- 9:54this man? We know what Jesus says about
- 9:57the man, so how does the Bible describe him?
- 10:04So as we look at this peculiarity of the man, we will
- 10:07see eight different principles #1 the man was uncompromising in
- 10:16his message, uncompromising in his message.
- 10:25We get that from John chapter 1, which states these words.
- 10:30In verse number six. There came a man sent from God
- 10:33whose name was John. He came as a witness to testify
- 10:40about the light, said all might believe through him he was not
- 10:45the light, but he came to testify about the light.
- 10:52His whole life was about speaking about the light.
- 11:00In fact, the Bible says in John chapter 10, these words about
- 11:05John, it says while John performed no sign.
- 11:11Isn't that interesting? A successful ministry is defined
- 11:17by the inability to perform a sign.
- 11:22The the opportunity to have a sensational ministry is not
- 11:29based on signs and wonders and the spectacular.
- 11:35We we live in a world today where we want everything to be
- 11:38big and spectacular and awesome. Incredible thinking that that's
- 11:43going to attract people and draw people, but it does not.
- 11:49Oh, it great. Gets a crowd.
- 11:51Yeah, it does. But for John, the sensationalism
- 11:58was gone. That's not what he was about.
- 12:03He was about speaking the truth. So it says in John 1010 verse
- 12:07#41 while John performed no sign, yet everything John said
- 12:12about this man to Christ was true.
- 12:16Everything John said was true. He had an uncompromising
- 12:21message. So his message was absolute.
- 12:26His message was accurate. His message was authoritative.
- 12:29His message was even apocalyptic.
- 12:33He said, said, why are you here? Who, who told you to flee from
- 12:38the wrath to come? I baptize you with water, but
- 12:42there's one coming who's mightier than I, who's going to
- 12:45baptize you with unquenchable fire?
- 12:49He spoke apocalyptically. Because all great messages focus
- 12:54on the judgement, focus on the end, so people know how to
- 12:58escape the judgement of God. That was John.
- 13:03He just came to to testify about the light.
- 13:08He just came to be a witness. He became the person who spoke
- 13:11the truth. He was certainly the last Old
- 13:17Testament prophet and he is now the first New Testament
- 13:24preacher. No wonder he was the greatest
- 13:29man. Whoever lived there hadn't been
- 13:32a prophet who had spoken in over 400 years.
- 13:37And all of a sudden John shows up in the wilderness, coming out
- 13:42of the wilderness like a like a locomotive fast approaching.
- 13:48He came with all kinds of explosive statements.
- 13:56His message was uncompromising. I love, I love what the Bible
- 14:04says in in Matthew Chapter 11 verse #8 when Jesus says this
- 14:12verse #7 what did you go out into the wilderness to see?
- 14:18What were you looking for? A Reed shaken by the wind.
- 14:24Is that what you were looking for?
- 14:27And around the Jordan, there are all these kinds of reeds that
- 14:32were very bendable and would just go with the breeze and the
- 14:37blow of the wind. They would go to the left and to
- 14:40the right, front and back, always, always bending.
- 14:47And Jesus says what? You go out to see somebody who
- 14:50would bend to the left and and bend to the right who took no
- 14:55stand at all. Is that the kind of guy you were
- 14:56looking for? Oh, that's not John.
- 15:01He says this. But what did you go out to see?
- 15:05A man dressed in soft clothing. Those who wear soft clothing are
- 15:12in King's palaces. But what did you go out to see?
- 15:15A prophet. Yes, I tell you.
- 15:18And one who is more than a prophet.
- 15:25Here was one who came, and when he spoke, he never dumbed down
- 15:31the message. He was a man when he spoke,
- 15:35never backed down from the hard truths of the message.
- 15:43Here was a man who for all practical purposes was not
- 15:47sensational, was not spectacular.
- 15:50But Luke 1 says that when he comes, he will come in the
- 15:55spirit and power of Elijah. Elijah was the great Old
- 16:03Testament prophet. Remember it was Moses and Elijah
- 16:06who appeared on the mountain. Transfiguration.
- 16:08Moses was the great lawgiver and Elijah was the great law
- 16:11protector. And this one, John would come in
- 16:15the spirit of the of, of, of Elijah.
- 16:21He would speak forcefully. He would speak faithfully, He
- 16:27would speak fervently, he'd even speak ferociously because he was
- 16:35the great prophet of God, pointing people to the Messiah.
- 16:41This is a man who's uncompromising in his message.
- 16:48He was He was the one who embodies embodies Proverbs 2323
- 16:54Buy truth and never sell it. Do all you can to obtain the
- 17:00truth because it's going to cost you everything that you have.
- 17:03And once you spend all that you have to obtain that which is the
- 17:07most priceless and valuable commodity this side of eternity,
- 17:11the word of the living God by truth.
- 17:14Never sell it out, never compromise it, never back down
- 17:17from it. Do all you can to obtain it.
- 17:20Wisdom, instruction and understanding.
- 17:22Solomon goes on to say that was John uncompromising in his
- 17:31message number 2. He was unorthodox in his
- 17:42mannerisms. Unorthodox in his mannerisms.
- 17:52Over in Matthew chapter 3 it says this now.
- 17:58Now John himself had a garment of camels hair and a leather
- 18:03belt around his waist, and his food was locusts and wild honey.
- 18:11Then Jerusalem was going out to him and all Judea and all the
- 18:15district around the Jordan, and they were being baptized by him
- 18:20in the Jordan River as they confessed their sins.
- 18:27Very unorthodox in his mannerisms.
- 18:31You see, his whole dress was the antithesis of the religious
- 18:38establishment. His whole mannerism of the way
- 18:43he lived his life spoke against the self indulgence of people in
- 18:50leadership because he lived a life of self denial.
- 18:55Remember, he's the son of Zacharias the priest.
- 19:02So John's in line to be a priest.
- 19:06He could have followed his father into the priesthood.
- 19:08He could have been in the temple, he could have been
- 19:11wearing the robes of a priest, he could have been in the
- 19:14comfort of the temple. But no, not John, Oh no.
- 19:19His whole lifestyle screamed against that because he knew how
- 19:27hypocritical it was in the days of Jesus.
- 19:32So we made sure that everything about his life spoke against the
- 19:37self indulgent society in which he lived in because he lived a
- 19:41life of complete and total self denial.
- 19:47That was John. His whole life was a a visual
- 19:54protest to to the religion of his day.
- 20:00He didn't care about fitting in. You know, today we, we have
- 20:04preachers who wear $1000 sneakers and wear jeans with
- 20:08holes in them. I guess that's still in style.
- 20:09I guess. I don't know.
- 20:10And they those tight shirts that you can see their muscles
- 20:12bulging all the time, you know, and they want to get in front of
- 20:15the audience and be really cool, like, right.
- 20:17That's not John. No, he wouldn't do that.
- 20:21That even to be next to him, he'd smell the high heaven that
- 20:26was John. He wasn't looking to looking to
- 20:29impress anybody because he had an audience of 1 the Messiah and
- 20:36he only wanted to please his God.
- 20:40So he wasn't interested in looking like everybody else.
- 20:43Fitting in was not important to him.
- 20:45Being a part of the society was not important to him.
- 20:48That's why I love what what Peter says in First Peter
- 20:51chapter 4. He says in verse #3 for the time
- 20:54I already passed, it's sufficient for you to have
- 20:56carried out the desire of the Gentiles.
- 20:58Having pursued a course of sensuality, lust, drunkenness,
- 21:01carousing, drinking parties, and and abominable idolatries and
- 21:06all this, they are surprised that you do not run with them in
- 21:10the same excess of dissipation and they malign you.
- 21:15That's the believer. You've been saved from all that.
- 21:21You're not interested in fitting in to the world you were saved
- 21:24from. You're not interested in being
- 21:27like the people used to hang around with in your unsafe
- 21:31condition and they see that you don't run with them in the same
- 21:36circles and they malign you. So Peter says.
- 21:41I'm sure that John was, was maligned on many occasions, not
- 21:47just because of what he ate or the way he dressed, how he
- 21:50smelled, but just because he was completely unorthodox in his
- 21:56mannerisms. He wasn't unorthodox just to be
- 22:02that way. No, there was a a, a method to
- 22:07his madness. He wanted to make sure that his
- 22:11life was a total contradiction to everything around him.
- 22:19Today we we love to to be a part of the world.
- 22:28We love to fit in at work. We love to fit in at school.
- 22:33Nobody wants to be on the outside.
- 22:35Nobody wants to be the odd one out.
- 22:37And then we wonder why our lives are not great.
- 22:42We wonder why our lives are the way they are, too busy trying to
- 22:49be like everybody else around us instead of trying to be like
- 22:52Christ and honor him and glorify his name.
- 22:56This is John, John the Baptizer, which leads to the second aspect
- 23:04of what he was unorthodox about, and that was it's so baptism.
- 23:09People were flocking to the wilderness down by the Jordan
- 23:13River, which is about down by the, the city Jericho and and
- 23:17beyond in the wilderness. It was hot, hot people were
- 23:23coming. They were, they were coming.
- 23:25He wasn't going to them. He could have administered in
- 23:27the temple, but he wouldn't have been welcome there.
- 23:30So he administered in the wilderness, the Judean
- 23:33wilderness. And if you've ever been there,
- 23:36it's it's hot, it's barren, it's dry.
- 23:39Oh, it's nasty. People came to him.
- 23:44He didn't go to them. They came to hear John.
- 23:50They came to see John because he was completely, uniquely
- 23:55different than everything and everyone else.
- 23:58Surmount them. They challenged them.
- 24:01Repent. Repent and be baptized for the
- 24:05Kingdom of heaven is at hand and he would challenge them to be
- 24:10baptized. And that's so interesting
- 24:12because we know what baptism is. We know as as believers that
- 24:16that we are baptized because we are identifying with the Christ
- 24:19who was, who was, who was killed, buried and, and rose
- 24:23again. That's why we we going down into
- 24:25the water because we, we are buried with him in the likeness
- 24:29of his death and then we are raised with him in the likeness
- 24:31of his resurrection. Everything about about baptism
- 24:35is symbolic and, and, and it's not what's baptism does because
- 24:41baptism doesn't do anything. It's what baptism says, what it
- 24:47says about your life and your commitment to follow the Lord
- 24:51Jesus Christ. So we understand that about
- 24:54baptism. But Jesus hadn't died and Jesus
- 24:58hadn't been buried and Jesus hadn't been raised from the dead
- 25:01yet. So what is John doing?
- 25:07He's baptizing these people and challenging them to confess
- 25:12their sins. And what he's doing is only done
- 25:16to Gentiles, Gentiles who want to convert to Judaism, Gentiles
- 25:22who realize that they're, they're not a part of the
- 25:24covenant people of God. And they realize that they're
- 25:27separated from the true and living God and they're not
- 25:30descendants of, of Abraham and they're outside the, the
- 25:33national covenant given to the people of Israel.
- 25:37And they want to come into that covenant relationship and they
- 25:41want to be baptized into all those things and, and confess
- 25:44that they are not a part of what Judaism represents.
- 25:51But John's not baptizing Gentiles, he's baptizing Jews.
- 25:58And Jews weren't baptized, but they were all coming down to be
- 26:02baptized by John because John's telling them, listen, I know
- 26:08that you're a descendant of Abraham.
- 26:09I know that you're into the rituals.
- 26:11I know you're into the circumcision.
- 26:13But none of that saves you. I know that you're the covenant
- 26:16people of Israel. I know that you understand
- 26:18Abrahamic and Davidic covenants. I understand you know all those
- 26:22things. But none of that's going to get
- 26:24you into heaven. You need to be prepared to meet
- 26:28the Messiah and therefore you need to confess your sins.
- 26:33You need to confess the fact that you're outside of a
- 26:35relationship with God. For you to hear that is
- 26:40astounding. That's why he was uncompromising
- 26:44in his message and unorthodox in his mannerisms.
- 26:49See, And people were being confessing their sins, being
- 26:54baptized. Unfortunately, it was only
- 26:57temporary. A lot like people, some people,
- 27:01not all people, but some people get baptized and are baptismal.
- 27:05They'll come and they'll make a profession of faith and they'll
- 27:07get baptized and they'll want to identify with Christ.
- 27:10But next thing you know, they're they're walking away from the
- 27:12Lord. They don't care about the Lord.
- 27:14And their commitment was a temporary commitment because the
- 27:17cares of this world choke out the trueness of their
- 27:21commitment. And the affliction comes and
- 27:23persecution comes. They can't stand it and they
- 27:25fall away. Matthew 13, The rocky soil and
- 27:28the thorny soil, a lot of people were temporary because when they
- 27:34met the Messiah, heard what the Messiah said, they didn't like
- 27:40the message. So they crucified him, see.
- 27:45So unfortunately, it was only a, a temporary, temporary
- 27:49commitment on their part. It was a, it was a commitment of
- 27:52convenience instead of a commitment of conviction.
- 27:56A lot like people today in the church, we we have a commitment
- 27:59of convenience. I'm committed to church as long
- 28:03as it's convenient, as long as it's close, as long as I, I
- 28:06don't spend 550 a gallon of gas to get there, as as long as it's
- 28:11at the right time that I wanted to be there or I'm not on
- 28:14vacation or I'm not doing this or that something else more
- 28:17important on Sunday. I, I have a, a commitment of, of
- 28:21convenience, not a commitment of conviction.
- 28:26These people had to convenience, everybody else getting baptized,
- 28:30everybody else confessing. They said let's do this thing.
- 28:32But then when the Messiah comes, Messiah begins to speak and says
- 28:38if any man came to me, let him deny himself and think of his
- 28:40cross and follow me. You mean like John denied
- 28:45himself? I'm not sure I want to do that
- 28:49really. And they crucified the Messiah.
- 28:54Here is John uncompromising his message.
- 29:00I wonder if you as as a man back down on the message of the
- 29:07Gospel. I wonder if you as a man are
- 29:12ashamed of the Gospel. I wonder if you as a man kind of
- 29:20are like to read down by the Jordan River, sway back and
- 29:25forth depending upon what crowd you're with and what kind of
- 29:28associates you have. And you'll say this in one crowd
- 29:32and that in another crowd, or you always stand strong on the
- 29:36truth, never compromising what Jesus says.
- 29:42John the Baptist was uncompromising in his message,
- 29:47and he was unorthodox in his mannerisms.
- 29:52But not this #3 he was unequalled among men.
- 30:05He was unequalled among men. Turn, if you would, in your
- 30:15Bible to Luke's gospel. As you recall, we spent nine
- 30:20years in Luke's gospel. It was quite a journey, took us
- 30:26a long time. But I want to give you the
- 30:30ultimate gender reveal story. We're all into gender reveal
- 30:37today, right? Everybody wants to do something
- 30:40big on Instagram or on Twitter or some kind of mechanism by
- 30:45which I can get out to the world the gender of my baby.
- 30:53Well, I'm going to give you the ultimate gender reveal.
- 30:55It's in Luke chapter 1. Here it is.
- 30:59Angel of the Lord appeared to Zacharias.
- 31:01This is verse 11, chapter 1, standing at the right of the
- 31:04altar of incense. Zacharias was troubled when he
- 31:07saw the Angel and fear gripped him.
- 31:09But the Angel said to him, do not be afraid Zacharias, for
- 31:12your petition has been heard and your wife Elizabeth will bear
- 31:15you a son. Wow can have a boy, she's just
- 31:21not going to be pregnant. She's going to have a boy and
- 31:27you will give him a name. John.
- 31:30They didn't have to even go to a baby book and forgot a good
- 31:33name. They didn't have to even even
- 31:37try to figure out what what kind of name fits with with our
- 31:40family. No, the Angel.
- 31:42Gabriel named him the Angel and Abriel told him that it's going
- 31:45to be a boy. This is the ultimate gender
- 31:47reveal. You're going to have a boy.
- 31:51His name is John, and it says this.
- 31:56You have joy and gladness, and many will rejoice at his birth,
- 32:00for he will be great in the sight of the Lord, and he will
- 32:02drink no wine or liquor, and he will be filled with the Holy
- 32:05Spirit while yet in his mother's womb, unequalled among men.
- 32:13No other man was filled with the Holy Spirit while in their
- 32:16mother's womb, but John was, and he will turn many of the sons of
- 32:23Israel back to the Lord their God.
- 32:25It is he who will go as a forerunner before him in the
- 32:27spirit and power of Elijah, to turn the hearts of the Father's
- 32:31back to the children, and the disobedient to the attitude of
- 32:34the righteous, so as to make ready of people prepared for the
- 32:39Lord. This man is unequaled among men.
- 32:46He had a very privileged calling, like Jeremiah, like
- 32:55Paul, he was set aside in his mother's womb for unique and
- 33:02special ministry. He would be the personal herald
- 33:07of the Messiah. He'd be the one that would point
- 33:11to the Messiah so that all would know who the Messiah is.
- 33:19Nobody else had that privilege, but John did.
- 33:27He came in the spirit and power of Elijah.
- 33:30No one else did. He was set apart personally by
- 33:37the Messiah. He would hear this later in
- 33:48life. First Father said these words.
- 33:52You child, will be called the prophet of El Elian, the Most
- 33:57High God. Wow.
- 34:01For you will go on before the Lord to prepare His way to give
- 34:04to His people the knowledge of salvation by the forgiveness of
- 34:08sins. Wow, that was John's ministry.
- 34:14So we lived his, his life. It was so unique, so peculiar.
- 34:23It was unequaled among men. He would see the Holy Spirit
- 34:30descend upon Jesus, That is baptism.
- 34:33He was the one who baptized Jesus.
- 34:36Talk about unequaled among men, seeing the Holy Spirit descend
- 34:40upon the Messiah and then to hear the voice from heaven.
- 34:45This is my beloved Son with whom I am well pleased, unequaled
- 34:52among men. This is John the Baptist, very
- 34:58peculiar person, very unique in his ministry.
- 35:04So he was uncompromising in his his message.
- 35:08He was unorthodox in his mannerisms.
- 35:13He was unequalled among men. He was unlimited in his mission.
- 35:22His mission had no limits. Over Luke chapter 3 verse #18
- 35:29These words were spoken. So with many other exhortations,
- 35:37He preached the gospel to the people.
- 35:41He didn't pick and choose what people because his message was
- 35:45unlimited to everybody who came to him.
- 35:49Didn't pick and choose whether they were the religious elite or
- 35:53whether they were they were poor blind people made no difference.
- 35:59It was the same message, same gospel about the same person all
- 36:03the time. It was unlimited.
- 36:07He was unlimited. His mission, verse 19 of Luke 3.
- 36:10But when Herod the Tetrarch was reprimanded by him because of
- 36:16Herodias, his brother's wife, and because of all the wicked
- 36:19things which Herod had done again unlimited in his mission,
- 36:25he was willing to speak to an Idumean, a descendant of Esau,
- 36:31people who hate the Jewish nation.
- 36:35He would speak to Herod, he would reprimand Herod, he would
- 36:38exhort Herod, he would reprimand Herod the king because his
- 36:45mission was unlimited. He wanted everybody to hear the
- 36:51message. Which leads me to our our fifth
- 36:56point, and that is this. John was peculiar because he was
- 37:04uninhibited in his ministry. Uninhibited in his ministry.
- 37:12In other words, nothing kept him from fulfilling his call, even
- 37:21when it came to reprimanding the king.
- 37:23Herod remember Herod, he was Herod the tetrarch.
- 37:27He was a ruler over 4 aspects of the of the king or one of four
- 37:31rulers and and he would build Tiberius on a on a, a graveyard.
- 37:38He would honor it, give honor to it by naming it after Caesar
- 37:43Tiberius. Caesar Tiberius is on the Sea of
- 37:46Galilee. Jesus, by the way, never went to
- 37:48that city because it was built over a a graveyard.
- 37:54But Herod was a man who was wicked and Herod had had married
- 38:02his brother's wife, who was really his half sister.
- 38:08And Herod knew that. I mean, John knew that and
- 38:11confronted him on that and listen to what it says in in
- 38:16Matthew's Gospel, in Matthew chapter 14.
- 38:23At that time, Herod the tetroarch heard the news about
- 38:25Jesus. John's gone off the scene now
- 38:28and Jesus is is is preaching, he said to his servants, this is
- 38:34John the Baptist. He thinks Jesus is John the
- 38:37Baptist. He was risen from the dead and
- 38:41that is why miraculous powers are at work in him.
- 38:45Herod is fearful of John. Remember what it says over in in
- 38:50Mark's Gospel and in the 6th 6th chapter of Mark it says this
- 38:57Herod was afraid of John verse 20 knowing that he was a
- 39:00righteous and holy man. Herod the king knew that John
- 39:06the Baptist was a righteous and holy man separated unto God
- 39:11living a righteous and pure life and he kept him safe.
- 39:16Remember John was in prison down in Macarius which is 7 miles
- 39:20northeast of the of the Dead Sea.
- 39:23It was the palace of Herod. It was his summer palace.
- 39:28He had two dungeons in it and that's where he kept kept John
- 39:33the Baptist kept him safe. But note this.
- 39:38And when Herod heard John, he was very perplexed.
- 39:44But he used to enjoy listening to him.
- 39:48That's just a an incredible verse.
- 39:51Herod was perplexed. Herod was was attracted,
- 39:59attracted by the message that John would give.
- 40:04Until the message attacked the way Herod lived.
- 40:11And then it was a different story.
- 40:13It's like people in the church, they're very, they're attracted
- 40:16to the message until, until the pastor says something about
- 40:19their personal lives and, and they're very offended by that
- 40:22and confronted by that. And they no longer want to go to
- 40:24that church because their, their, their life has been
- 40:27exposed. Not that the pastor knew
- 40:28anything, it's just that they didn't like what he said.
- 40:32That was Herod. He was taken back.
- 40:36He was, he was moved by John because of the message.
- 40:41But when the message attacked Herod's relationship, his
- 40:47incestuous relationship with his brother's wife, well, they
- 40:53didn't go over so well. So back in Matthew's Gospel it
- 40:58says these words, When Herod had John arrested, he bound him and
- 41:01put him in prison because of Herodias his wife, the wife of
- 41:06his brother Philip. For John had been saying to him,
- 41:09It is not lawful for you to have her.
- 41:11Although Herod wanted to put him to death, he feared the crowd
- 41:15because he regarded John as a prophet.
- 41:18But when Herod's birthday came, the daughter of Herodias danced
- 41:21before them, and pleased Herod so much that he promised with an
- 41:25oath to give her whatever she asked.
- 41:27Having been prompted by her mother, she said, Give me here
- 41:32on the platter the head of John the Baptist.
- 41:35Although he was grieved, the king commanded it to be given
- 41:39Because of his oaths and because of his dinner guests, he sent
- 41:43and had John beheaded in the prison.
- 41:47His head was brought on a platter and given to the girl.
- 41:51She brought it to her mother. His disciples came and took away
- 41:55the body and buried it, and he went and reported it to Jesus.
- 42:05Here's a man who was uninhibited in his ministry.
- 42:12He had no inhibitions about anything, who he talked to, what
- 42:17he said, because he was interested in righteousness and
- 42:22holiness and godliness. He only spoke the truth.
- 42:27In fact, he did the most loving thing he could do, confront,
- 42:31inherit on a sin. The most unloving thing he could
- 42:36do was just allow him to live in sin without ever being
- 42:39confronted on it. That's the most unloving thing
- 42:42anybody can do. But the most loving thing you
- 42:46can do is to call out the sin, call it what it is, and demand
- 42:53that they repent of their sin and follow the Lord.
- 42:57That was John uninhibited in his ministry, so he was beheaded.
- 43:11That the voice of John could be silenced.
- 43:17But the truth that John spoke would carry on through Jesus,
- 43:25through the apostles and all those who would hear the Gospel.
- 43:32So here is John the Baptist. He was the kind of person who
- 43:39was uncompromising in his message, unorthodox in his
- 43:44mannerisms, unequaled among men, unlimited in his mission.
- 43:50He was uninhibited in his ministry.
- 43:55Number six, he was unpopular before the multitudes.
- 44:04The Bible says in Luke chapter 3 verse #20 these words.
- 44:18Herod also added this to them, and he locked John up in prison.
- 44:28John was antisocial, he was politically incorrect, he was
- 44:36insensitive, he was bothersome, he was irritating, he was an
- 44:43outcast. He had no wealth.
- 44:47He had no social prominence, he had no education, he had no
- 44:58worldly status, no achievements, backed by no organization, wrote
- 45:04no books, held no office, had no physical prowess.
- 45:10That we know of all the things that are completely different
- 45:18than what we would determine as a great and successful man.
- 45:23He would never win a Pulitzer Prize.
- 45:27He would never win an Oscar. He would never win an Emmy.
- 45:33He would never win a People's Choice Award.
- 45:38He would never win a lifetime achievement award.
- 45:42He'd be no MVP. He'd have no All Star honors,
- 45:46He'd have no military medals, He had no literary honors, He would
- 45:51have no educational honors. But he was the greatest man ever
- 45:57born of a woman. Not because I said so, not
- 46:04because the Jerusalem Post said so, but because Jesus said so.
- 46:13And #7 He was unforgettable as a man.
- 46:19He is written in the annals of Scripture, in the eternal Word
- 46:24of God, be remembered forever. He truly lived out Ecclesiastes
- 46:297, one that the day of 1's death is better than the day of 1's
- 46:33birth. And everyone rejoiced at his
- 46:36birth. The Angel Gabriel said so
- 46:40they'll be filled with joy and everyone will rejoice.
- 46:44But the day he died, talk about heaven's rejoicing.
- 46:50Talk about his home and glory, his reward in heaven, an
- 46:56unforgettable man. The Bible tells us the book of
- 47:01Proverbs, the memory of the righteous will last forever.
- 47:09And yet there is one more point. I told you I had eight.
- 47:16I've given you 7, that there's one more point that is extremely
- 47:24relatable to everyone in the room that you need to understand
- 47:30about John. It's a point that is
- 47:34unimaginable because it was John who had an unimaginable moment
- 47:43unlike any other moment in his life that marked him, that
- 47:49caused Jesus to say there's never been a man born of a woman
- 47:56greater than John in that unimaginable moment, which is
- 48:04point #8 I'll talk to you about next week.
- 48:10Let's pray. Father God, we thank you for
- 48:13today and thank you for the ministry of John the Baptist.
- 48:18Matthew records it. Mark records it.
- 48:21Luke records it. John records it. 4 Gospels
- 48:26highlight the ministry of this man.
- 48:32Extremely peculiar, extremely different.
- 48:38Nothing that we would deem successful in this day and age
- 48:41for sure. Nothing that we would want to
- 48:44put up as a model for others to follow.
- 48:47But you did. And I pray that we would look at
- 48:54John and realize the impact that he made in just an 18 month
- 49:05ministry. That's it.
- 49:09And then you took him home. And yet, Lord, the man's life
- 49:17was incredible. Maybe learn from him.
- 49:21Maybe learn to model him because you said he was the greatest man
- 49:27born of a woman. And so, Father, we just ask that
- 49:30you go before us. You help us to live in light of
- 49:34your word until you come again, as you most surely will, in
- 49:38Jesus name, Amen.
