- 0:03Speaker 1: Well, we got one, and Atlanta's happy, AJ. They get
- 0:07Speaker 1: to sleep in a little bit or go to their jobs,
- 0:10Speaker 1: and then they can watch a game at night. They
- 0:12Speaker 1: didn't find out until late last night.
- 0:13Speaker 2: Matt Olsen got his wish, everybody.
- 0:16Speaker 3: Huh?
- 0:17Speaker 2: Matt Olsen got his wish, everybody. Matt Olsen, he got
- 0:21Speaker 2: his wish.
- 0:22Speaker 1: He did.
- 0:22Speaker 4: He did.
- 0:23Speaker 1: You were a little laggy, but I hear you. Um,
- 0:25Speaker 1: we're going to do a post game show Braves and
- 0:27Speaker 1: Phillies tonight. After that one, you'll have cratch. You'll have
- 0:30Speaker 1: Todd father, Alana Rizzo will be on. So they'll break
- 0:32Speaker 1: everything down for you. There it is. Boom. It is
- 0:35Speaker 1: an eight o'clock game. Everyone take a deep breath after
- 0:39Speaker 1: the game streaming on the FT YouTube channel. We'll have it.
- 0:42Speaker 1: So we're looking forward to that. And I caught this
- 0:47Speaker 1: tweet from Austin Cain reaches the name. I think he
- 0:51Speaker 1: covers the Braves to some degree. In the last 25 years,
- 0:56Speaker 1: the Braves have made the playoffs in 14 of the
- 0:58Speaker 1: 24 normal seasons, excluding 2020 when there were no fans
- 1:03Speaker 1: and 60 games. If they can't win this game three,
- 1:06Speaker 1: they will have failed to advance even one round in
- 1:09Speaker 1: 14 of those 15 seasons. I was shocked, Kratz, to
- 1:14Speaker 1: see the number that crazy. I knew they'd gone through
- 1:17Speaker 1: some struggles, but damn. What a number.
- 1:22Speaker 4: And obviously everybody knows. which one it was, it was
- 1:24Speaker 4: the year they won the world series. So basically what
- 1:27Speaker 4: he's saying from this tweet is the Braves are like,
- 1:29Speaker 4: we're not even going to play with your emotions. We're
- 1:32Speaker 4: either out or we're winning the whole thing. That is
- 1:35Speaker 4: a crazy stack. When I saw that.
- 1:38Speaker 1: AJ, I was shocked to see that. I mean, we'll
- 1:41Speaker 1: get into the White Sox history too, of not even
- 1:45Speaker 1: being there or showing up for post-season series, but the
- 1:47Speaker 1: Braves have had a lot of success, right? White Sox
- 1:50Speaker 1: have been through a lot of losing. The Braves have
- 1:53Speaker 1: had a lot of regular season winning. I'm just surprised
- 1:55Speaker 1: there's been that much postseason losing, like not even giving
- 1:59Speaker 1: your team a little bit of hope.
- 2:02Speaker 2: Yeah, but don't forget, some of this also was back
- 2:05Speaker 2: when there was less playoff rounds, so they lost a
- 2:07Speaker 2: little bit earlier. But, yeah, this surprises me because, man,
- 2:11Speaker 2: if you make the playoffs that much, you'd think there'd
- 2:12Speaker 2: at least be some runs to the World Series, some
- 2:15Speaker 2: deeper runs, but no, going out in the first round. Hey,
- 2:18Speaker 2: like you said, though, Scott, at least– at least they
- 2:21Speaker 2: don't give their fans false hope. It's boom, it's over,
- 2:24Speaker 2: or we're winning the World Series. So at least that's positive.
- 2:27Speaker 4: The other part is, I can't believe, if you would
- 2:29Speaker 4: have told me the over-under is a 10 of years
- 2:33Speaker 4: in the last 25 years that the Braves haven't made
- 2:35Speaker 4: the playoffs, I would have said under. I thought the
- 2:41Speaker 4: Braves had been in the playoffs forever, even in the
- 2:44Speaker 4: last 25 years. I know two years.
- 2:48Speaker 2: They weren't. I know two years. The two years I
- 2:51Speaker 2: was there, we weren't even close.
- 2:54Speaker 4: But you forget about that because they always produced and
- 2:58Speaker 4: have always been in it. They've never just been like–
- 3:02Speaker 4: not never. Rarely are they the seller dwellers, but they're
- 3:04Speaker 4: always producing good pitching. Then they're like, okay, we rebuilt
- 3:08Speaker 4: with this guy. Wow, MVP, rookie– or not MVP, but
- 3:11Speaker 4: rookie of the year candidate type of stuff. That's how
- 3:15Speaker 4: I view the Braves.
- 3:19Speaker 1: Yeah, and then the 90s Braves, that's a whole other topic, too,
- 3:22Speaker 1: where they were dominant. But they at least had some
- 3:24Speaker 1: postseason success in terms of round by round. I know
- 3:27Speaker 1: there was only one World Series title out of it.
- 3:29Speaker 1: It's just the history there was pretty glaring to me.
- 3:32Speaker 1: All right, let's get to some other history that'll make A.J.
- 3:34Speaker 1: a little bit happier.
- 3:37Speaker 4: It's a full count.
- 3:42Speaker 1: It is a full count, and it's fueled by Marathon.
- 3:45Speaker 1: They did it, A.J., They didn't make their fans sweat
- 3:49Speaker 1: too much. The White Sox sweeping the Astros in two
- 3:51Speaker 1: games in Houston. Houston, as a team, has actually really
- 3:55Speaker 1: struggled to win playoff games at home. But for me, AJ,
- 4:00Speaker 1: I knew the history. I had to read it again
- 4:02Speaker 1: in the last 24 hours to really let it sink
- 4:05Speaker 1: in how few victories they've had in postseason series over
- 4:09Speaker 1: the last 125 years. So what was going through your
- 4:14Speaker 1: mind on this one? And then we'll get into the
- 4:16Speaker 1: details of the game.
- 4:18Speaker 2: Game was over in the first inning. No sweat bet,
- 4:21Speaker 2: as you said, Scotty. No sweat bet. They threw up
- 4:23Speaker 2: a big number on Hunter Brown. Hunter Brown couldn't get
- 4:25Speaker 2: out of the first inning. His defense let him down
- 4:27Speaker 2: a little bit. But just quality of bat after quality
- 4:30Speaker 2: of bat after quality of bat. And the Astros are
- 4:33Speaker 2: going home. Honestly, the White Sox were a better team
- 4:35Speaker 2: in these two games. I know it was only two games.
- 4:36Speaker 2: But in these two games, the White Sox were a
- 4:38Speaker 2: better team. And I said it. yesterday and I'll continue
- 4:41Speaker 2: to say this they look like the experienced team and
- 4:42Speaker 2: the Astros look like the team that had never been
- 4:44Speaker 2: in the postseason from the pitching staff to the hitters
- 4:47Speaker 2: to the bats to the defense to everything that you
- 4:50Speaker 2: need to win a postseason series the White Sox had
- 4:52Speaker 2: it all now can they carry that over to face
- 4:54Speaker 2: Cleveland I certainly hope so and I picked them to
- 4:57Speaker 2: beat Cleveland because they did beat Cleveland in the regular
- 4:59Speaker 2: season in the season series so I think the White
- 5:02Speaker 2: Sox are a better team, I think, sometimes that people
- 5:04Speaker 2: give them credit for. They're definitely more fun to watch
- 5:06Speaker 2: than anybody else. And if you didn't see their post-game interviews,
- 5:09Speaker 2: y'all need to get out from under a rock because
- 5:11Speaker 2: the Mike Vassil and the Murakami interviews are A1, top-notch,
- 5:15Speaker 2: whatever you want to call it. Some of the best
- 5:17Speaker 2: interviews you'll ever hear.
- 5:19Speaker 4: I don't care if this team likes each other, doesn't
- 5:21Speaker 4: like each other. They look like they have fun, but
- 5:24Speaker 4: they are exactly what AJ said. Way more fun to
- 5:27Speaker 4: watch than... I'm trying to think of anybody else. I mean,
- 5:30Speaker 4: the Padres are electric when you watch them too, but
- 5:33Speaker 4: to me, like watching the White Sox play, it was
- 5:37Speaker 4: definitely a case, and this is why I think Will
- 5:39Speaker 4: Venable should probably be manager of the year, is the
- 5:43Speaker 4: fact that they've been prepared to play in this spot.
- 5:47Speaker 4: Some teams would have shrunk at the sight of Jordan Alvarez,
- 5:51Speaker 4: Jose Altuve, Christian Walker, Isak Paredes, like all these, Hunter Brown.
- 5:56Speaker 4: They didn't just, they didn't just like, Meet them toe
- 5:59Speaker 4: to toe. Yes, I know the game was close. I
- 6:02Speaker 4: felt like they dominated them and they showed that they
- 6:05Speaker 4: are not afraid of any situation, any spot in these
- 6:09Speaker 4: big games.
- 6:12Speaker 1: They feel young, fratty. I mean, even Venable. I feel
- 6:16Speaker 1: like I just watched him play yesterday. So here's Venable first.
- 6:20Speaker 1: AJ was alluding to some of these awesome interviews and
- 6:24Speaker 1: just bottle popping celebrations. Let's start with Venable and Friends celebrating,
- 6:29Speaker 1: and then we'll get to Murakami and some others.
- 6:32Speaker 4: All right, boys, congratulations. That's sick. When you think about
- 6:42Speaker 4: that series right there, it's exactly what the whole year
- 6:45Speaker 4: has been like. Everyone contributing, every single person doing their job.
- 6:49Speaker 4: I'm kicking it to Vast because... This has been about
- 6:52Speaker 4: the spirit of this club.
- 6:53Speaker 3: It don't matter what we do in the regular season.
- 7:04Speaker 3: So we're going to go on the road. We're going
- 7:06Speaker 3: to kick some ass and we're going to bring playoff baseball.
- 7:12Speaker 4: That's good.
- 7:14Speaker 1: And then also, AJ, you were talking about basketball.
- 7:17Speaker 4: Yeah, he is.
- 7:17Speaker 1: He did some interviews recently. later on too, which we
- 7:20Speaker 1: might show later in the show with, with your boy,
- 7:23Speaker 1: Sean Burke, who made some headlines with not really devoting
- 7:27Speaker 1: himself to anything, but the game.
- 7:30Speaker 4: Smart, smart.
- 7:30Speaker 2: Mike Vass was a hell of a mascot with his
- 7:32Speaker 2: wizard hat and his wizard little, his wizard's wand and
- 7:35Speaker 2: all the things he done. I mean, they need him.
- 7:37Speaker 2: They bring him on the road for one reason. And
- 7:38Speaker 2: that has to be a hell of a cheerleader. And
- 7:40Speaker 2: he does that. He gives great speeches. He's awesome, dude.
- 7:42Speaker 2: And Murakami had some, I mean, this is awesome.
- 7:45Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 7:45Speaker 2: Bring, you know what? They're bringing playoff baseball back to Chicago.
- 7:48Speaker 2: Cause you know who ain't? the team on the north side,
- 7:50Speaker 2: because they got sent home. So once again, the teams
- 7:52Speaker 2: make it to the playoffs the same year. White Sox
- 7:55Speaker 2: play longer than the Cubs do.
- 7:57Speaker 1: AJ, Murakami and Vargas didn't even do anything in this series.
- 8:01Speaker 4: Not much.
- 8:02Speaker 1: I mean, Murakami had the one sack fly that was important,
- 8:04Speaker 1: but there wasn't much. I'm saying that's actually scary if
- 8:08Speaker 1: I'm looking at them and going, okay, look how they
- 8:10Speaker 1: kind of manhandled the Astros. Maidroff had the huge home run,
- 8:14Speaker 1: which we can get to also. But the two guys
- 8:16Speaker 1: that you'd probably look at as– The best player, right,
- 8:19Speaker 1: in Vargas, and then Murakami as the most impactful when
- 8:23Speaker 1: he's feeling it. Didn't really have to do much.
- 8:26Speaker 2: No, because this lineup is deeper. I think, again, if
- 8:28Speaker 2: you don't watch the White Sox a lot, I mean,
- 8:30Speaker 2: Antonacci's a pest at the top of the order, right?
- 8:32Speaker 2: Kyle Teal, as he's gotten healthier and healthier, the bats
- 8:35Speaker 2: have gotten better and better. Vargas is the guy kind
- 8:38Speaker 2: of that makes him go. But then you can go
- 8:40Speaker 2: down to Braden Montgomery had a nice series. Chase Meidroth
- 8:42Speaker 2: is a stud. I love the way this guy plays baseball.
- 8:46Speaker 2: He is just a baseball player. Last night, the game
- 8:51Speaker 2: got to 4-3. Will Venable puts in Acuna to run
- 8:53Speaker 2: for Benatendi. He puts all kinds of pressure. They have
- 8:57Speaker 2: to bring in Abreu. They're stealing second and third. All
- 9:00Speaker 2: kinds of things happen. It hangs the slider. My job
- 9:02Speaker 2: makes it 7-3, game over, series over. So they've pushed
- 9:06Speaker 2: all the right buttons in these two games. Only two games,
- 9:09Speaker 2: but I like what I see from the Chicago White Sox.
- 9:13Speaker 4: They're not looking overmatched, for sure. No, I mean, I
- 9:17Speaker 4: think it's something that they, when that game got close,
- 9:22Speaker 4: I think that's a time, especially if you're a young
- 9:24Speaker 4: team and you're up 1-0 in the series, the game's close,
- 9:28Speaker 4: they bring in a good pitcher. They just kept the
- 9:32Speaker 4: pedal to the metal. I mean, that at bat, to
- 9:35Speaker 4: be able to hit, I love the energy or the
- 9:38Speaker 4: reaction that Mydroth had after he hit that home run.
- 9:41Speaker 4: You see, they put that game out of reach with
- 9:44Speaker 4: that home run. You put that game out of reach
- 9:46Speaker 4: in the first inning when you sent Hunter Brown to
- 9:49Speaker 4: the showers after getting two outs. And then the Astros
- 9:54Speaker 4: start climbing back in. It could have totally swung that
- 9:56Speaker 4: series there had they not gotten that big hit in
- 9:59Speaker 4: the evening. could see, I don't know. Like if you
- 10:02Speaker 4: watch other series, if you watch the other games, just
- 10:05Speaker 4: the energy that these guys bring that youthful, like vigor,
- 10:10Speaker 4: the fact that they don't have any girlfriends, they don't
- 10:12Speaker 4: have any family throughout their entire team. Like it's just, it's,
- 10:17Speaker 4: fun as much as i think you need veterans on
- 10:20Speaker 4: teams i think you need youth on teams too to
- 10:24Speaker 4: give the veterans energy and to just play with that
- 10:26Speaker 4: like i don't even care i'm just gonna i'm just
- 10:29Speaker 4: gonna do what we've done all season and that's enough.
- 10:33Speaker 1: Yeah and it's infectious right even people that come over
- 10:36Speaker 1: and murakami had a personality when he came over but
- 10:40Speaker 1: it's blossoming so let's get a little murakami post hey
- 10:44Speaker 1: you gotta tell me what are you feeling right now
- 10:46Speaker 1: One hundred.
- 10:47Speaker 3: One hundred, not.
- 10:48Speaker 4: A thousand this time? Yeah, one hundred.
- 10:52Speaker 2: I'm Japanese! It's early in Japan. They're celebrating with you.
- 10:57Speaker 4: Anything you want to say to them?
- 10:59Speaker 2: Same, same, same.
- 11:01Speaker 4: Yeah, he's drunk.
- 11:02Speaker 2: He's drunk.
- 11:05Speaker 4: But he's drunk.
- 11:07Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 11:08Speaker 4: You told me you didn't need him. I'm drunk. Yeah, yeah,
- 11:12Speaker 4: maybe hangover.
- 11:13Speaker 2: You know?
- 11:14Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 11:15Speaker 2: Tomorrow hungover. Yes.
- 11:17Speaker 3: No, no, yesterday.
- 11:18Speaker 4: Tomorrow.
- 11:19Speaker 2: Yeah, sorry.
- 11:20Speaker 4: I don't speak English. You don't need the translator.
- 11:23Speaker 1: Congratulations.
- 11:24Speaker 2: Thank you so much.
- 11:27Speaker 1: It's like, what is happening? It's like they're having their
- 11:34Speaker 1: first drinks. It's almost like, I don't know, like high
- 11:37Speaker 1: schoolers sneaking some alcohol and being like, I'm drunk, hungover.
- 11:39Speaker 4: What is going to happen? He's like, he's drunk.
- 11:44Speaker 2: He's drunk. And then he said, I'm going to be
- 11:45Speaker 2: hungover yesterday. And he's like, no, I don't speak English.
- 11:48Speaker 2: Tomorrow I'll be hungover.
- 11:49Speaker 4: That's so awesome. That was my favorite part. Because of
- 11:51Speaker 4: the fact that he didn't do good hitting. He didn't
- 11:53Speaker 4: do well hitting. Like, he was like, I was drunk.
- 11:57Speaker 4: I was hungover yesterday. And it was like, everyone for
- 12:00Speaker 4: a second was like, wait a minute. Is that, wait,
- 12:03Speaker 4: you were. And he's like, no, no, I mean tomorrow.
- 12:06Speaker 4: It's great. Like, they get two days off. They get
- 12:08Speaker 4: to enjoy this. Like, and they're flying. What I loved
- 12:12Speaker 4: about what Vassil said. Mike Vassell said at the end,
- 12:15Speaker 4: and probably couldn't hear it because they were starting to
- 12:17Speaker 4: pop the bottles, he said, we're bringing playoff baseball back
- 12:21Speaker 4: to Chicago. Like, when he said that, like, even, like,
- 12:24Speaker 4: right now, I get, like, I get chills on my neck. Like,
- 12:27Speaker 4: that's that feeling. Like, they're so excited. Yes, they play
- 12:34Speaker 4: these two games, but to bring playoff baseball back to
- 12:37Speaker 4: the city that has supported them the whole year, I'm
- 12:40Speaker 4: juiced for them.
- 12:42Speaker 1: Well, to give you some history, I mentioned it at
- 12:45Speaker 1: the top. This is their first playoff series win since.
- 12:51Speaker 1: I'm going to throw it to my friend to let
- 12:53Speaker 1: everyone know.
- 12:54Speaker 2: Since we won the World Series in 2005. It's amazing.
- 12:59Speaker 2: I know we lost in 2008 when I was there.
- 13:01Speaker 2: And then they didn't make the playoffs for a long time.
- 13:02Speaker 2: They lost in 20. Lost in 21 to the Astros
- 13:06Speaker 2: and the DS. And then, yeah, there we are. It's
- 13:09Speaker 2: been a long time. Listen, there is not a lot
- 13:11Speaker 2: of history of winning in the Chicago White Sox. I'm sorry.
- 13:15Speaker 2: This isn't the Atlanta Braves that make the playoffs every
- 13:17Speaker 2: year and don't win it. This isn't the Dodgers that
- 13:20Speaker 2: have won a bunch. This isn't the Cardinals. There's not
- 13:24Speaker 2: a lot of long, long history of winning in Chicago,
- 13:27Speaker 2: especially on the south side. North side, they suck too.
- 13:32Speaker 2: There's not a lot of history of winning baseball in Chicago, period.
- 13:35Speaker 4: It's a small market. That's why. But AJ, I know
- 13:38Speaker 4: you're not the person that picks out the regalia and
- 13:41Speaker 4: the spirit nights and everything, but going back, I was
- 13:44Speaker 4: watching a highlight of 21 when they had the blackout
- 13:48Speaker 4: in Chicago. I know it didn't go well. Dylan Cease
- 13:51Speaker 4: was on the mound. All that stuff, I get it.
- 13:53Speaker 4: Please tell me your Chicago faithful are going to be
- 13:56Speaker 4: wearing all black and they're going to do another blackout
- 13:58Speaker 4: because that game got me hyped just watching the highlights
- 14:02Speaker 4: of it.
- 14:03Speaker 2: No, that wasn't the game. The 2008 Game 163 blackout
- 14:07Speaker 2: was the blackout game. I've never seen that. We won 1-0.
- 14:11Speaker 2: Ken Griffey Jr. threw me a 7-hopper. Michael Kadir ran
- 14:15Speaker 2: me over at home plate. I saw Griffey yesterday, and
- 14:17Speaker 2: I'm like, remember that time he threw me a 7-hopper
- 14:19Speaker 2: and they made a bobblehead out of it? He's like, man,
- 14:21Speaker 2: don't you know I'm in the Hall of Fame? I'm like, yeah,
- 14:23Speaker 2: but that's because I can catch bad throws from Hall
- 14:26Speaker 2: of Fame players. That's the game. Jim Tomey, we won 1-0.
- 14:29Speaker 2: Jim Tomey hit a home run over the batter's eye
- 14:31Speaker 2: in center field. That's the blackout game. And, yes, I
- 14:34Speaker 2: think they are going to do a blackout at some point.
- 14:36Speaker 2: The problem is if they're matched up on the same
- 14:39Speaker 2: day as the other teams, they're going to be the
- 14:40Speaker 2: day game. So a blackout in the day doesn't really
- 14:42Speaker 2: do much. You need some night games to get the
- 14:44Speaker 2: blackout going.
- 14:47Speaker 4: Okay.
- 14:48Speaker 5: I know.
- 14:49Speaker 4: Sorry.
- 14:49Speaker 2: Not my call. It's not my call. But they're not
- 14:52Speaker 2: going to be– listen, the Yankees and Rays are going
- 14:55Speaker 2: to beat them because they're going to play later because
- 14:57Speaker 2: you want the Yankees to play as late as possible.
- 14:59Speaker 2: Brewers-Padres is going to be later because the Padres are
- 15:02Speaker 2: on the west coast. They'll be in San Diego. And
- 15:05Speaker 2: then the NL, the other two, whether Dodgers and Braves
- 15:10Speaker 2: or Phillies is, sorry, going to be. So you know
- 15:13Speaker 2: what Guardians White Sox is going to be when there's
- 15:16Speaker 2: four games? They're going to be that 1 o'clock, 2
- 15:18Speaker 2: o'clock game. It's just the way it is. Sorry, guys.
- 15:21Speaker 4: As Bregman called it, the suntan lotion game. He's sick
- 15:24Speaker 4: of playing games putting suntan lotion on. Maybe they should have.
- 15:27Speaker 2: Maybe they should have because they got their ass whooped
- 15:30Speaker 2: in San Diego twice. Maybe they should have put some
- 15:32Speaker 2: suntan lotion on their bats because they didn't hit.
- 15:34Speaker 4: Yeah, something. But it's definitely setting up for the White
- 15:39Speaker 4: Sox to be able to get back even or get
- 15:42Speaker 4: back and have a better shot because they can set
- 15:44Speaker 4: their rotation because of the extra off day. But we'll
- 15:48Speaker 4: talk about that another time.
- 15:49Speaker 2: Davis Martin's got to start game one for me.
- 15:52Speaker 1: Okay.
- 15:54Speaker 2: I mean, they'll probably use an opener. But Davis Martin's
- 15:56Speaker 2: got to be the bulk guy. Sean Burke just pitched.
- 15:58Speaker 2: He won't be ready. Anthony Kaye pitched in this game.
- 16:01Speaker 2: He'll probably be ready for game two, I would think.
- 16:05Speaker 4: I don't know.
- 16:05Speaker 2: There's an extra off day. There's an extra off day
- 16:08Speaker 2: built in in the ALDS between one and two. Just FYI.
- 16:11Speaker 2: NL goes back-to-back. AL has an extra off day built in.
- 16:15Speaker 4: That's massive.
- 16:16Speaker 1: I think that's bigger for the White Sox. The Guardians
- 16:18Speaker 1: have more pitching depth. It helps for the White Sox.
- 16:22Speaker 2: But it also makes the Guardians back into their bullpen.
- 16:25Speaker 2: Gattis and Sobrowski and Cade Smith, they're like, we can
- 16:28Speaker 2: pitch one, two, three, four, and five. If they need them,
- 16:31Speaker 2: they can pitch them in all five games because of
- 16:33Speaker 2: that built-in off day. Because you go one game off day,
- 16:36Speaker 2: another game two, then you go off day, then you
- 16:39Speaker 2: go three and four off day, and then game five
- 16:42Speaker 2: if you need it. So they can pitch in all
- 16:44Speaker 2: five games. You're making this basically a five to six
- 16:47Speaker 2: inning game every game for the Guardians and the White Sox.
- 16:50Speaker 1: That's true. Yeah, it's fascinating. Two very different ball clubs.
- 16:54Speaker 1: So we'll get into it more as we get closer
- 16:57Speaker 1: to it. That's full count for you. It's fueled by

- 17:20Speaker 1: got like a little, I don't know, Godfather vibe to
- 17:22Speaker 1: it or something. Cut to the chase is the new
- 17:24Speaker 1: one with my draft. One of the best in the

- 17:51Speaker 1: of his articles in The Athletic. You can also listen
- 17:54Speaker 1: to him. He's one half of Philly's Therapy, the podcast. Matt,
- 17:57Speaker 1: great to talk to you and we're excited to dig
- 17:59Speaker 1: into the strategy here coming up in game three. So
- 18:03Speaker 1: how you doing? And what do you think of the
- 18:06Speaker 1: starting pitching decision? Let's start there of Aaron Nola to
- 18:09Speaker 1: begin this one.
- 18:11Speaker 5: I'm good. I watched an unbelievable baseball game yesterday and
- 18:14Speaker 5: I'm pretty sure I'll see another one tonight. It's been
- 18:16Speaker 5: a great series strategy. I think Noah's going to have
- 18:22Speaker 5: to factor in some point at this game tonight. And
- 18:24Speaker 5: I think that's why they're starting him now. It is
- 18:27Speaker 5: an all hands on deck kind of situation. This is
- 18:29Speaker 5: their third elimination game in five days. They've been managing
- 18:33Speaker 5: very aggressively that they've only used five pitchers in the
- 18:36Speaker 5: first two games of the series. They're going to use
- 18:38Speaker 5: Nola tonight to start. I think if you're trying to
- 18:41Speaker 5: script it, it's going to be score dependent. It's kind
- 18:44Speaker 5: of a read and react thing, but I think they'd
- 18:45Speaker 5: like to try to get them through the lineup twice.
- 18:48Speaker 5: You know, and then maybe you see Zach Wheeler as
- 18:50Speaker 5: a reliever on short rest. Maybe see Jesus Lizardo as
- 18:54Speaker 5: a reliever. He pitched in game one. I think he
- 18:57Speaker 5: could be available tonight in game three. One of the
- 19:01Speaker 5: bigger questions is going to be John Duran. Is he available?
- 19:03Speaker 5: He was not available for game two after throwing 27
- 19:07Speaker 5: pitches in game one. That's a big thing to monitor
- 19:10Speaker 5: for the game today. But it is really all hands
- 19:14Speaker 5: on deck. And, you know, Nola, had an unbelievable second
- 19:17Speaker 5: half of the season. I mean, this guy really turned
- 19:19Speaker 5: back the clock. It was vintage Aaron Noah, and that
- 19:22Speaker 5: included two starts in September consecutively against the Braves, one
- 19:26Speaker 5: in Philly, one in Atlanta. He pitched in the seventh
- 19:28Speaker 5: inning at both starts. He was really, really good. He's
- 19:33Speaker 5: on full rest, and I think they're going to let
- 19:35Speaker 5: it rip and see what happens.
- 19:38Speaker 4: You brought up so many things, but I have to
- 19:39Speaker 4: go to Duran. Johan Duran not coming out of the
- 19:42Speaker 4: pen last night. Was there any inclination that that was
- 19:47Speaker 4: going to happen? Was there any definitive inclination answers of
- 19:50Speaker 4: why post-game?
- 19:54Speaker 5: There was some inclination, Kratz. I mean, after game one, Duran,
- 19:57Speaker 5: you know, is a pretty durable guy, and he's pretty honest, too,
- 20:00Speaker 5: and he'll always say, I want the ball. He was
- 20:02Speaker 5: kind of wishy-washy after game one, and even Don Mattingly
- 20:06Speaker 5: was a little hesitant before game two. He's like, we
- 20:09Speaker 5: got to check on him. We got to check on him.
- 20:11Speaker 5: My read on it was that, um, there's not necessarily
- 20:14Speaker 5: an injury. I think it was just that he did
- 20:16Speaker 5: not feel great after, you know, get, you know, going
- 20:19Speaker 5: to innings there, um, in game one, it's a lot
- 20:23Speaker 5: of pitches, a lot of high stress pitches. Um, we'll see, uh,
- 20:28Speaker 5: this guy is taking the ball hot for them. He's
- 20:30Speaker 5: a terrible guy. He's really important. You know, even if
- 20:33Speaker 5: you only have him for an inning game three, uh,
- 20:36Speaker 5: that would be really important.
- 20:39Speaker 2: Matt, you mentioned Aaron Nola and you mentioned they don't
- 20:42Speaker 2: really know the plan for him yet. What combination of
- 20:46Speaker 2: Zach Wheeler's available, right? Would that be one? I can't
- 20:48Speaker 2: believe they would use Lizardo after he was hurt to
- 20:50Speaker 2: come back after one day. I know he threw five innings,
- 20:52Speaker 2: but is it painter available? Do they go to McFarlane again?
- 20:56Speaker 2: I mean, Alvarado, what happened to him? He fell off
- 20:58Speaker 2: the face of the earth, right? I mean, they can't
- 21:00Speaker 2: get through three games with basically using the same two
- 21:03Speaker 2: or three pitchers over and over again. They're going to
- 21:06Speaker 2: at some point have to use, and the Braves are
- 21:07Speaker 2: in the same boat, right? So who do the Phillies,
- 21:10Speaker 2: maybe my question should be, besides Duran, who do the
- 21:13Speaker 2: Phillies trust in their bullpen to give them, let's say
- 21:16Speaker 2: Nola goes one time through and they got to cover four, five,
- 21:18Speaker 2: six innings? I don't know.
- 21:21Speaker 5: I mean, they really don't trust much out there. You know,
- 21:25Speaker 5: Alex McFarlane is a guy they trust, but he's pitched
- 21:27Speaker 5: in both of the games in this series. He's never
- 21:29Speaker 5: pitched on three consecutive days in his life. He only
- 21:32Speaker 5: threw four pitches in game two. So I would think
- 21:34Speaker 5: that he is available. You know, if they need a
- 21:37Speaker 5: left on left situation in the middle of the game
- 21:39Speaker 5: or even later, you know, Tim Mays is a guy
- 21:42Speaker 5: who they do trust, I think. And he's gotten up.
- 21:43Speaker 5: I think he got up at least three times in
- 21:45Speaker 5: game two. He has warmed up a lot this season
- 21:49Speaker 5: and pitched a lot to Alvarado.
- 21:52Speaker 4: You're right.
- 21:52Speaker 5: It is really kind of falling down. His velocity was
- 21:54Speaker 5: down in September. The results really weren't there. The strikes
- 21:57Speaker 5: weren't there. I don't know that he's a guy that
- 21:59Speaker 5: they really trust right now. Jonathan Boland hasn't pitched in
- 22:03Speaker 5: like two weeks, but. He's probably a guy that they
- 22:06Speaker 5: would trust tonight. He was warming up at various points
- 22:09Speaker 5: in game two. You know, big stuff guy, big fastball guy,
- 22:13Speaker 5: but he had a groin injury late in the season
- 22:15Speaker 5: and they had not gotten him. He has not faced
- 22:18Speaker 5: hitters in like two weeks. So that would be a
- 22:20Speaker 5: heck of a gambit to do it in game three.
- 22:23Speaker 5: But yeah, I mean, I think Wheeler, he's never started
- 22:25Speaker 5: on short rest. He has relieved in short rest in
- 22:28Speaker 5: the postseason in 2023 in the NLCS. I do think
- 22:33Speaker 5: that he could be part of this plan tonight if
- 22:35Speaker 5: that scenario arises where you say Nolan only gets him
- 22:38Speaker 5: through the order once or something like that.
- 22:41Speaker 4: Is Jesus Lizardo going to make fun of Andrew Painter
- 22:43Speaker 4: enough that he has to get out there again? Obviously,
- 22:46Speaker 4: I'm talking about the quotes that Jesus Lizardo would make
- 22:49Speaker 4: fun of Andrew Painter, so he had to be ready
- 22:52Speaker 4: out of the pen. Is he 100% shut down? Because
- 22:54Speaker 4: that's the one name you said after throwing two innings,
- 22:57Speaker 4: you didn't say a yay or nay.
- 23:00Speaker 5: I don't know. He ends up throwing three innings, 37 pitches,
- 23:05Speaker 5: first time as a reliever, never pitched on back-to-back days,
- 23:07Speaker 5: and it's like, I'm going to think that he's not
- 23:09Speaker 5: available tonight, but this is an all-hands-on-deck thing, and if
- 23:14Speaker 5: they need it, I'm sure he'll be sitting out there
- 23:17Speaker 5: in the bullpen. So I would think, though, that he's
- 23:20Speaker 5: just given what he did for them in Game 2
- 23:23Speaker 5: and the newness of all of it, I've got to
- 23:26Speaker 5: think that he's lower on their list for tonight.
- 23:28Speaker 2: All right. We're trying to break down their pitching. But
- 23:32Speaker 2: with none of the answers, Matt, you're giving us no
- 23:34Speaker 2: answers other than Nola starting. Let's go to the offense.
- 23:39Speaker 5: They need four runs. That's my answer.
- 23:42Speaker 2: Well, yeah, but unless Schwarber and Harper do something, who's
- 23:46Speaker 2: the guy you could look at in this lineup? Alec Boehm,
- 23:48Speaker 2: I guess, has had two nice games, obviously the go-ahead
- 23:51Speaker 2: home run and the double-off sale. But is there someone else?
- 23:54Speaker 2: Is it Rio Muto that needs to step up? Is
- 23:55Speaker 2: it a Bryson Stott? I mean, who's the guy because–
- 23:59Speaker 2: I just look at this Phillies lineup and I say,
- 24:01Speaker 2: all right, if Harper and Schwarber don't beat you, who
- 24:05Speaker 2: can beat you in this lineup? And I don't know
- 24:07Speaker 2: where the answer lies.
- 24:09Speaker 5: I don't either, but I know that Trey Turner is
- 24:11Speaker 5: an important guy here. You know, I mean, he started
- 24:13Speaker 5: game two with a double. Trey Turner.
- 24:15Speaker 4: Remember him?
- 24:16Speaker 2: Who's that?
- 24:16Speaker 5: Remember him? He started game two with a double.
- 24:19Speaker 2: He was really good at one time, and I don't
- 24:21Speaker 2: know where he went.
- 24:23Speaker 5: He's had a rough year. Uh, but I mean, you know,
- 24:26Speaker 5: you get a big hit or two in game three
- 24:28Speaker 5: and a winner go home situation. And I don't know
- 24:30Speaker 5: that we remember the rest. So, I mean, they, they
- 24:34Speaker 5: need something from him and they got something early in
- 24:36Speaker 5: game two from him. He didn't have a great at
- 24:37Speaker 5: bat late in game two. He popped out in the
- 24:39Speaker 5: first pitch he saw from Fuentes. Trey Turner. I mean,
- 24:43Speaker 5: obviously yes, Alec Boehm has taken some unbelievable swings on
- 24:46Speaker 5: some 99 mile an hour pitches, both in game one
- 24:49Speaker 5: and game two. Uh, I think there's some question as
- 24:54Speaker 5: to what they're going to do on the infield. Edmundo Sosa,
- 24:57Speaker 5: he's banged up. He had to leave the game. He's
- 24:59Speaker 5: been playing with a groin injury. He said he hurt
- 25:00Speaker 5: his thigh while he beat out an infield single in
- 25:04Speaker 5: Game 2. you know, if he's not in there, what's
- 25:07Speaker 5: the situation? Like, are they going to have Harper at
- 25:09Speaker 5: first base, Boehm at third base? And then you'll see
- 25:11Speaker 5: like somebody, maybe like Brian De La Cruz in the
- 25:14Speaker 5: outfield that remains to be seen. But yeah, I mean, Stott,
- 25:18Speaker 5: especially Grant Holmes is going to be the guy they
- 25:20Speaker 5: face majority of the time. I mean, Stott has taken
- 25:22Speaker 5: some really, really good at bats, especially against righties for
- 25:25Speaker 5: the last few weeks. He's been getting on base with
- 25:27Speaker 5: a little bit of pop.
- 25:28Speaker 4: He'd be a guy.
- 25:29Speaker 5: Yeah. I mean, at, They need some of this stuff.
- 25:33Speaker 5: I actually think that Real Muto's at-bats in this series
- 25:35Speaker 5: have been really good. I mean, he's also taken some
- 25:37Speaker 5: big swings, and he's had some good at-bats. So I
- 25:41Speaker 5: don't know where it's going to come from, but their
- 25:43Speaker 5: best path to getting 27 outs from their pitchers tonight
- 25:46Speaker 5: is that they score a bunch of runs. That's the
- 25:48Speaker 5: best path.
- 25:49Speaker 4: Because they can trust them. They can trust them to
- 25:51Speaker 4: keep going when they're already out there and get maybe
- 25:53Speaker 4: one or two outs out of each guy. Does Don
- 25:56Speaker 4: Mattingly set his lineup different tonight because it's Ray Kerr?
- 26:01Speaker 4: First one out there, Ray Kerr faced him, lefty, inexperienced.
- 26:05Speaker 4: They have Grant Holmes. They know his bulk. Essentially, they're
- 26:08Speaker 4: going to try to get five innings of outs, 15 outs,
- 26:11Speaker 4: the Braves, from those two guys if they're successful. Does
- 26:16Speaker 4: he set their lineup differently? And I know you said
- 26:19Speaker 4: maybe not flexible with Sosa possibly being on the shelf.
- 26:24Speaker 5: Yeah, I think that's the big piece of this is
- 26:26Speaker 5: that if Sosa is available tonight, then maybe you do
- 26:29Speaker 5: set your line up differently. Maybe you don't start Brandon
- 26:31Speaker 5: Marsh because you have a lefty opener and they're thinking, well,
- 26:36Speaker 5: if Marsh is hitting sixth or seventh, they're going to
- 26:39Speaker 5: want the lefty to face Marsh. Um, so maybe they,
- 26:43Speaker 5: they start the game with Marsh on the bench and
- 26:45Speaker 5: then he comes into the game once Kerr is out
- 26:47Speaker 5: of the game. Uh, but you know, you also have
- 26:49Speaker 5: the Braves have Dylan Dodd and Dylan Lee sitting back there.
- 26:52Speaker 5: And I know Lee got hit in game two, but he's,
- 26:54Speaker 5: you know, been a really terrific lefty reliever all year
- 26:57Speaker 5: for them.
- 26:58Speaker 2: There is a lot of.
- 26:58Speaker 5: Strategy, but it may be rendered moot if they're just
- 27:01Speaker 5: like kind of short on the bench tonight, they're already
- 27:03Speaker 5: carrying three catchers in this series. Um, The roster is
- 27:07Speaker 5: not deep. Their pool of minor league position players, even
- 27:11Speaker 5: guys that, you know, to sit on the end of
- 27:12Speaker 5: the bench, a lot of injuries in the minor leagues
- 27:15Speaker 5: late in the season for the Phillies, it really, really
- 27:18Speaker 5: thinned their pool. You know, and then the arise injury
- 27:22Speaker 5: obviously thinned them. So I got to think that it's not,
- 27:26Speaker 5: the opener will not likely affect Don Mattingly's lineup.
- 27:31Speaker 4: Probably not.
- 27:34Speaker 2: I did Colin Cowherd earlier, and he asked me about
- 27:37Speaker 2: Bryce Harper. And he said, has Bryce Harper's career been
- 27:40Speaker 2: a disappointment? I said, absolutely not. He's going to be
- 27:42Speaker 2: a first ballot Hall of Famer. He's got three MVPs.
- 27:45Speaker 2: He gets big hits in big moments. So I'm going
- 27:48Speaker 2: to ask you the same question. Has Bryce Harper's career
- 27:50Speaker 2: been a disappointment? Because I say, absolutely not. What else
- 27:52Speaker 2: do you want? A guy who's going to the first
- 27:53Speaker 2: ballot Hall of Fame. What else can you ask for
- 27:56Speaker 2: from one guy?
- 27:59Speaker 5: I look at Bryce Harper, and I see a guy who–
- 28:03Speaker 5: the expectations have been so high for this guy since
- 28:06Speaker 5: he was a teenager. And has he met all of
- 28:09Speaker 5: the expectations? No, he has not won a world series,
- 28:12Speaker 5: but he's met almost all of them. And that is
- 28:14Speaker 5: a remarkable thing to say about a guy who has
- 28:16Speaker 5: been in the spotlight, who has had this attention for
- 28:20Speaker 5: more than 20 years. I mean, it's just, it's, it's,
- 28:23Speaker 5: it's crazy to me. I mean, this guy has done
- 28:25Speaker 5: some unbelievable things and in game two, it was unbelievable.
- 28:30Speaker 5: I had a little, I was in the press box and,
- 28:32Speaker 5: you know, I don't really, you know, you're not, you
- 28:34Speaker 5: don't really chatter or talk, you know, much loudly. But
- 28:37Speaker 5: when he hit the home run after, you know, 13
- 28:40Speaker 5: minutes after committing what could have been a legacy defining
- 28:43Speaker 5: mistake in the outfield, I just, I like kind of,
- 28:47Speaker 5: I was like, I yelled, I was like, unbelievable, unbelievable
- 28:50Speaker 5: that he rose that moment after what.
- 28:54Speaker 4: He did in the field.
- 28:55Speaker 5: And it's just, Look, I know he is a polarizing guy.
- 28:59Speaker 5: I know there's a lot of people who do not
- 29:00Speaker 5: like him, and I get that. And I think he's
- 29:02Speaker 5: always kind of out of target. But, I mean, the
- 29:04Speaker 5: stuff that this guy has done on the field, and
- 29:07Speaker 5: if he somehow wills them to win in game three
- 29:10Speaker 5: and they go to L.A., it just kind of adds
- 29:13Speaker 5: to the legacy. And it is just really amazing that
- 29:15Speaker 5: he took that swing in that moment.
- 29:18Speaker 4: Is there going to be talk about the defensive play,
- 29:20Speaker 4: the miscue, misread ball in right field? Will there be
- 29:24Speaker 4: a defensive alignment change? Once they start getting more outs,
- 29:28Speaker 4: I'm not saying he's coming out of the game. I'm saying,
- 29:31Speaker 4: is that the best defensive team if everybody's healthy? I
- 29:35Speaker 4: know we already hit that part of it. But also,
- 29:37Speaker 4: there was another base running mistake, kind of base running.
- 29:40Speaker 4: mistake early in the game.
- 29:41Speaker 5: Yeah I mean they've you they've sent Derek Hill out
- 29:45Speaker 5: to right field late in games at times for defense
- 29:48Speaker 5: and either taken Harper out or moved him to first
- 29:50Speaker 5: base Derek Hill is a really good outfielder he's probably
- 29:54Speaker 5: the best defensive outfielder on the team you know he's
- 29:57Speaker 5: he's probably not going to start even though he's you
- 30:00Speaker 5: know he starts against most lefties and they are opening
- 30:03Speaker 5: with a lefty but i gotta think that he's he's
- 30:05Speaker 5: probably not going to start and he gives you the
- 30:07Speaker 5: speed defense option on the bench if you need it
- 30:09Speaker 5: if you need a pinch hit uh later in the
- 30:12Speaker 5: game against a lefty maybe maybe dylan dodd um but
- 30:16Speaker 5: yeah i mean they've they've gone to hill late in
- 30:18Speaker 5: games and they would do it again i think if
- 30:20Speaker 5: he's still on the bench and they have a lead
- 30:21Speaker 5: late he's going to go to right field and that um.
- 30:27Speaker 2: A lot of Phillies fans that I know. Not Eric Kratz.
- 30:28Speaker 2: Eric Kratz is not included in this. They don't like
- 30:31Speaker 2: Alec Boehm. It's like, gosh, what did this guy do?
- 30:34Speaker 2: He's put up some really good numbers at times. In
- 30:37Speaker 2: the first game, he obviously got the hit off sale.
- 30:39Speaker 2: They didn't win it. Austin Riley home run ruined it.
- 30:41Speaker 2: And then yesterday, he hits the home run. He made
- 30:43Speaker 2: a couple really nice plays at first base. The pick,
- 30:46Speaker 2: you know, he's made, you know, the 3-2-3 double play, right?
- 30:49Speaker 2: He's made some nice plays. Is the tight justified for
- 30:52Speaker 2: Alec Boehm? Or is this just Philly fans? Like we've
- 30:55Speaker 2: heard so much hype about Alec Boehm and we, we just,
- 30:58Speaker 2: we want more, we want him to be Bryce Harper basically.
- 31:02Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 31:02Speaker 5: I mean, I think a lot of things, I mean, one,
- 31:04Speaker 5: like no one epitomizes like the roller coaster of this
- 31:07Speaker 5: Philly season more than Alec Boehm. I mean, because for
- 31:10Speaker 5: the first half of the season, he was borderline unplayable.
- 31:13Speaker 5: I mean, he was having a horrendous first three months
- 31:16Speaker 5: of this year. I mean, it was really bad, really,
- 31:19Speaker 5: really bad. And he, since august really i mean he's
- 31:23Speaker 5: been maybe their most consistent hitter and he has come
- 31:26Speaker 5: up in some huge moments for them especially against left-handed
- 31:29Speaker 5: pitching i think he's hitting something like 500 against lefties
- 31:32Speaker 5: since august 1st um and that's huge because he's usually
- 31:35Speaker 5: batting you know in a sea of left-handed hitters around
- 31:38Speaker 5: him so he's getting at bats against lefties because teams
- 31:40Speaker 5: are trying to put lefties on them there you know
- 31:45Speaker 5: what a what a weird career he's had with the
- 31:47Speaker 5: Phillies right I mean I think you look at him
- 31:49Speaker 5: he's a he's a taller guy he's hits in the
- 31:52Speaker 5: middle of the order you're like oh you know he
- 31:54Speaker 5: should be he should hit for more power he should
- 31:56Speaker 5: be more of a prototypical sort of middle of the
- 31:58Speaker 5: order bat and he's not really that he's not a
- 32:00Speaker 5: guy who pulls a lot of balls in the air
- 32:03Speaker 5: he's a guy who yes he drives in a lot
- 32:05Speaker 5: of runs because he bats you know often with runners
- 32:07Speaker 5: on base he's got Harper and Schwarber batting ahead of
- 32:10Speaker 5: him they get on base quite a bit You know,
- 32:12Speaker 5: Boehm has always been known as a decent run producer,
- 32:15Speaker 5: and he still was that this season, even though, you know,
- 32:19Speaker 5: for most of the year he was not productive. But
- 32:21Speaker 5: he still has driven in runs. He has come up
- 32:23Speaker 5: big with runners in scoring position. You know, overall, like he's,
- 32:27Speaker 5: you know, sort of been kind of an average year, right?
- 32:29Speaker 5: And sort of an average career with the Phillies. He's
- 32:32Speaker 5: a free agent at the end of the year. I mean,
- 32:34Speaker 5: he was, you know, maybe three outs yesterday away from
- 32:37Speaker 5: his Phillies career ending. And then he authors a signature
- 32:41Speaker 5: moment with the Phillies. It's just an unbelievable game for
- 32:44Speaker 5: a lot of reasons. That is just one of them.
- 32:48Speaker 4: We'll have an off-season discussion about Alec Bowman, what he
- 32:50Speaker 4: should get in free agency and not. You said the
- 32:53Speaker 4: 3-2-3 double play. I know you know Jason Stark, but
- 32:58Speaker 4: do you know the history of the last 3-2-3 double
- 33:02Speaker 4: play that the Phillies turned? I don't. 13 years and
- 33:09Speaker 4: one day in Atlanta. Kevin Franzen was playing first base,
- 33:14Speaker 4: threw it home to me, and I threw it back
- 33:17Speaker 4: to first for the last 3-2-3 double play. It was
- 33:22Speaker 4: in Atlanta, and it was 13 years almost to the day.
- 33:25Speaker 4: It was September 29th, last day of the season.
- 33:29Speaker 5: I mean, I'm sure I was there, but Kratzy, I just,
- 33:32Speaker 5: you know, I don't remember that.
- 33:34Speaker 4: Two historic first base catching combos in Phillies history.
- 33:40Speaker 5: This one a little more chattier you and you and
- 33:42Speaker 5: Franzen than the, the real Muto bone one.
- 33:46Speaker 4: Much better, much better hair from those two guys though, too.
- 33:49Speaker 4: So I guess there's that.
- 33:51Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 33:53Speaker 1: You can tell too, the chatty part. I mean, they
- 33:56Speaker 1: both talk all day, every day in their current jobs.
- 34:00Speaker 1: So nailed it. Matt does a lot of talking.
- 34:03Speaker 2: Can you tell who I'm picking to win tonight? I don't,
- 34:05Speaker 2: could you?
- 34:06Speaker 5: I'm surprised Kratz is not wearing his Phillies gear.
- 34:09Speaker 2: He's a fake fan. He said he was an Eagles fan.
- 34:13Speaker 2: Bears whooped that ass. Fake fan. Didn't watch. Fake fan.
- 34:17Speaker 4: I'm definitely an Eagles fan. I'm definitely an Eagles fan.
- 34:21Speaker 4: Whoever I pick tonight.
- 34:22Speaker 2: You're not a Philly fan? You're not a Phillies fan?
- 34:25Speaker 4: I'm not a Phillies fan. I don't know how else
- 34:29Speaker 4: to say it.
- 34:30Speaker 2: What?
- 34:32Speaker 4: This is not news. Breaking news. This is not new.
- 34:36Speaker 4: You just jumped off the bandwagon on TV. This is
- 34:39Speaker 4: not new news. No, I have jumped on the Sixers bandwagon,
- 34:42Speaker 4: Matt Gelb. I have jumped on the Sixers bandwagon. I
- 34:45Speaker 4: can say I didn't watch a single game last year,
- 34:47Speaker 4: but I'm going to watch this year.
- 34:50Speaker 5: Yeah, I'm a Sixers sicko. So, I mean, everyone's jumping
- 34:52Speaker 5: on the bandwagon, which is great. But, you know, that
- 34:55Speaker 5: would be great. I can't wait for that. But also,
- 34:58Speaker 5: I just– Tonight's game, I mean, like, everyone's been asking me, like,
- 35:01Speaker 5: what do you think is going to happen? I'm like,
- 35:03Speaker 5: I've given up, you know?
- 35:04Speaker 4: I really have.
- 35:05Speaker 5: I've given up. I mean, the Phillies this year, I've covered,
- 35:09Speaker 5: you know, I've covered this team for quite a few
- 35:11Speaker 5: years now, and there's ups and downs every season. You
- 35:13Speaker 5: guys know that. But, like, the extremes of this season,
- 35:17Speaker 5: I cannot figure it out. And, you know, you could
- 35:20Speaker 5: tell me a million things happened tonight, and I would
- 35:22Speaker 5: probably say, yeah, sure. I believe every single one of them.
- 35:26Speaker 2: Did the Sixers sign the GOAT, by the way? They
- 35:28Speaker 2: signed MJ? is that why is that why they're is
- 35:33Speaker 2: that why they're on the is that why you're so
- 35:35Speaker 2: happy they signed they signed mj oh sorry.
- 35:40Speaker 1: Speaking of mj steve kerr is starting tonight for the
- 35:42Speaker 1: braids i'm kidding rake her but that story is wild
- 35:47Speaker 1: too uh jesus cano you're Colleague, I encourage everyone to
- 35:50Speaker 1: check that out. 7-11, movie theater, working at all these
- 35:53Speaker 1: different spots, being like careers done. Now he's starting game
- 35:56Speaker 1: three for the playoffs for the Braves now. The only
- 35:58Speaker 1: critical part is why is he starting game three? He's
- 36:01Speaker 1: a reliever, and the Braves should have a starter in
- 36:03Speaker 1: that spot. They had time to load up for that,
- 36:05Speaker 1: but that is another story.
- 36:07Speaker 2: Where's Grant Holmes?
- 36:10Speaker 1: He'll be there, just not starting.
- 36:12Speaker 2: They don't want to start him. I don't understand. We
- 36:15Speaker 2: don't have time. Actually, I want to get your thoughts
- 36:18Speaker 2: on this. So they're going to say, Grant Holmes, we're
- 36:20Speaker 2: going to need you to give us three to four innings.
- 36:22Speaker 2: We just can't have you start because you're not good
- 36:24Speaker 2: enough to start, but we need you to give us
- 36:26Speaker 2: the most innings in a game. Like, doesn't that seem counterintuitive?
- 36:29Speaker 2: I don't know, Krause. Didn't you always think that? Like, wait,
- 36:31Speaker 2: this guy's not good enough to start the game, but
- 36:33Speaker 2: we need him to pitch the most important innings of
- 36:34Speaker 2: the game?
- 36:38Speaker 5: I mean, I think they're trying to match up. You know,
- 36:40Speaker 5: they want to get lefties on Warburton Harper at the top,
- 36:43Speaker 5: and I– I don't blame them. I mean, you look
- 36:46Speaker 5: at Harper's numbers and like, of course, you know, like
- 36:48Speaker 5: both of them hit a home run off of a
- 36:49Speaker 5: lefty in game two, a lefty who, by the way,
- 36:51Speaker 5: had not given up a home run to a single
- 36:53Speaker 5: left-handed hitter the entire season. Again, you know, good luck
- 36:56Speaker 5: trying to figure this out, but yeah, I mean, they,
- 36:58Speaker 5: I think they, I, I expect Holmes to pitch quite
- 37:01Speaker 5: a bit tonight. I think the Phillies do too, but
- 37:03Speaker 5: they've seen lefty openers all season. I mean, this is
- 37:06Speaker 5: something that teams have done against them a lot.
- 37:10Speaker 1: Oh, it's going to be fascinating. Strategy 101 here. Matt,
- 37:13Speaker 1: good stuff. Appreciate it. Thanks for the time on a
- 37:15Speaker 1: busy day. Also, just a reminder, I mentioned The Athletic,
- 37:18Speaker 1: but don't forget to check out Matt's podcast, Philly's Therapy.
- 37:22Speaker 1: He's been doing plenty of episodes in between here. So
- 37:25Speaker 1: you can have positive or negative therapy sessions depending on
- 37:27Speaker 1: where you're at and how this game three goes. So
- 37:29Speaker 1: there it is. You can also scan the QR code
- 37:31Speaker 1: to follow the show. Matt, appreciate you.
- 37:33Speaker 4: Thanks, man.
- 37:34Speaker 1: Have fun tonight.
- 37:35Speaker 4: See you guys.
- 37:36Speaker 5: Can't wait.
- 37:37Speaker 1: Yes, same here. All right, so that's your Game 3
- 37:40Speaker 1: preview of the Braves and the Phillies. And then NLDS
- 37:44Speaker 1: coming soon, and that's where Fox 1 will take over.
- 37:47Speaker 1: Of course, you can catch the games on Fox or FS1,
- 37:50Speaker 1: but then Fox 1 is your app option. Live or
- 37:53Speaker 1: on demand, never miss a moment. Stream now. Start your
- 37:55Speaker 1: three-day free trial today at fox1. com. One more little bit
- 38:00Speaker 1: of info, a reminder to everyone, post-game show, after Phillies
- 38:05Speaker 1: and Braves will be live right after the game. Whatever happens, happens.
- 38:08Speaker 1: We'll talk about it. Hey, so the game ends on
- 38:11Speaker 1: an ABS challenge, which was epic. JT real Muto is 81%
- 38:15Speaker 1: ABS accurate.
- 38:17Speaker 5: Kratz.
- 38:17Speaker 1: This is the tweet from Mike Petriello. Also minus four
- 38:20Speaker 1: runs versus average, because he's very conservative about when he
- 38:23Speaker 1: challenges the average catcher attained 40% of the runs available
- 38:26Speaker 1: to him through ABS real Muto 30%. So he doesn't
- 38:28Speaker 1: challenge enough, but when he does really rarely misses. I, I, I.
- 38:34Speaker 4: Guess that's good. Should he be challenging more of those
- 38:38Speaker 4: borderline pitches, I guess would be the question, the naysayers.
- 38:42Speaker 4: Or if you only ever shoot layups in basketball, you
- 38:46Speaker 4: rarely miss. So I think it's one of those things
- 38:50Speaker 4: that if he's only called challenging the layups, then it
- 38:53Speaker 4: gives his team the chance to challenge a little bit
- 38:56Speaker 4: more aggressively in other situations. I think he should challenge more, but.
- 39:03Speaker 4: He's really good at it. I guess you can't deny that.
- 39:06Speaker 1: Also, AJ, if you blow a challenge early in a game, like,
- 39:08Speaker 1: I don't know if that's satisfying everything that has to
- 39:11Speaker 1: go through someone's head on a pitch, say in the
- 39:14Speaker 1: second inning of a regular season game, is this worth
- 39:17Speaker 1: it with, you know, this particular batter up, right? Like
- 39:20Speaker 1: there's a lot that goes into it. So I'll take
- 39:22Speaker 1: that number. And I think he's a positive with that
- 39:25Speaker 1: kind of correct percentage. The fact that there's a stat
- 39:27Speaker 1: that's bringing him down, I need to do more digging
- 39:30Speaker 1: on that one in the off season.
- 39:32Speaker 2: Yeah, I have no problem. He challenges when he knows
- 39:34Speaker 2: the umpire made a mistake. Isn't that what this is
- 39:36Speaker 2: supposed to be for? And by the way, the, the
- 39:38Speaker 2: 10th of an inch ones, like, which is like, by
- 39:40Speaker 2: the way, I mean, that's like a 10th of an inch.
- 39:42Speaker 2: That literally is a coin flip. They, they, no hitter goes,
- 39:46Speaker 2: that was a 10th of an inch off. I'm just
- 39:48Speaker 2: going to try this or catcher. I'm just going to
- 39:50Speaker 2: try this and see what happens. That's a coin flip.
- 39:52Speaker 2: And so a lot of times the teams that challenge more,
- 39:55Speaker 2: their numbers might be lower. They also challenge more because
- 39:57Speaker 2: a lot of times you're just hoping and praying that
- 39:59Speaker 2: the coin flip lands their way. They're like heads or tails. Okay.
- 40:02Speaker 4: Tails never fails. Let's try it. Yeah. They had one left.
- 40:08Speaker 4: They had one left at the end of the game.
- 40:10Speaker 4: I've seen some emotional head taps. in the first or
- 40:13Speaker 4: second inning, because one went your way, the wrong way, whatever.
- 40:17Speaker 4: They don't have that at the end of the game.
- 40:19Speaker 4: You have no idea what happens at the end of
- 40:21Speaker 4: game two. He used it. He gone. They win.
- 40:26Speaker 2: Painter also was doing this, by the way, if you
- 40:28Speaker 2: didn't see. Painter was last.
- 40:36Speaker 1: Well, that was not particularly close. Hot corner time. The Padres...
- 40:41Speaker 1: Completely manhandled the Cubs over a two-game span. AJ, we
- 40:44Speaker 1: did a good post-game show late last night to go
- 40:47Speaker 1: over everything. I felt like the momentum already just amped
- 40:51Speaker 1: up in the first at-bat. PCA, burning a challenge, having
- 40:56Speaker 1: a tough series, him and Bregman not really doing anything.
- 40:59Speaker 1: First at-bat, head tap, fans are all over that. To me,
- 41:04Speaker 1: that is how you just ignite a crowd that didn't
- 41:07Speaker 1: need igniting, and it was all downhill play. from there
- 41:11Speaker 1: the night before, even more crazy with Tatis and Machado
- 41:14Speaker 1: homering in that first inning. So how lopsided was this matchup?
- 41:20Speaker 2: They couldn't hit and they couldn't hit. And by the way,
- 41:22Speaker 2: if you think that crowd was crazy, wait until the
- 41:24Speaker 2: Brewers walk into Milwaukee in a few days, that place
- 41:27Speaker 2: is going to be, I mean, incredible. They couldn't hit,
- 41:33Speaker 2: you know, the biggest thing was the starting pitching difference.
- 41:37Speaker 2: Obviously Matthew Boyd gives up a home run the first
- 41:39Speaker 2: time to, first pitch to Tatis and he gives up
- 41:42Speaker 2: the home run, but Michael King going out there, setting
- 41:45Speaker 2: a tone and just the office. It just looked like
- 41:48Speaker 2: it was too, it was two different teams playing in
- 41:51Speaker 2: different leagues. I don't know how else to explain it.
- 41:53Speaker 2: It was crazy. Cause the Cubs have a really good
- 41:55Speaker 2: lineup and the Padres just absolutely mowed through them. Now
- 42:00Speaker 2: people are going to say, Oh, it's a travel. They
- 42:01Speaker 2: were in Boston and they had to fly to Tampa.
- 42:03Speaker 2: Then they had to fly to San Diego. It's a playoffs.
- 42:05Speaker 2: It's a playoffs. You get hype, you get hype. Okay. Um, but,
- 42:10Speaker 2: It was just amazing. Again, it's the two games. Same
- 42:13Speaker 2: as the Yankees and the Red Sox and even the
- 42:15Speaker 2: White Sox and the Astros. When you get swept and
- 42:18Speaker 2: you don't hit, it just makes you look like you're
- 42:21Speaker 2: not on the same level. The Cubs were really good
- 42:23Speaker 2: this year, but the Padres, as hot as they were
- 42:26Speaker 2: in that environment, if you don't jump on them early,
- 42:29Speaker 2: you're not getting to them. Sorry, you're just not because
- 42:32Speaker 2: with that atmosphere and that team, they just feed off
- 42:35Speaker 2: that energy, man. The energy in Petco Park is.
- 42:38Speaker 4: One of the best. flying across country, all that stuff, stop.
- 42:43Speaker 4: You can sleep in November. And you probably sleep, anybody
- 42:47Speaker 4: ever been with that played deep in the postseason, you
- 42:51Speaker 4: sleep for like two days. So yes, you will be
- 42:53Speaker 4: tired later. You're never tired in the moment. To me,
- 42:57Speaker 4: it looked like Padres versus the Cubs was one team
- 43:01Speaker 4: that was trying to have professional at-bats, trying to work things,
- 43:04Speaker 4: trying to do what we did in the regular season.
- 43:07Speaker 4: And another team in the Padres who said, We're going
- 43:10Speaker 4: to come out and take this, John, and we're going
- 43:12Speaker 4: to run with it. I get it. First pitch, you know,
- 43:15Speaker 4: Tatis hits a dinger. You know, that really, like, sways
- 43:18Speaker 4: my decision. But it just seemed like the whole time
- 43:21Speaker 4: we're going to go out and do it. And it
- 43:23Speaker 4: looked like the Cubs were trying to make stuff happen,
- 43:26Speaker 4: trying to, like, work it together. I mean, it just
- 43:30Speaker 4: looked like two completely different energies because I'm not going
- 43:34Speaker 4: to say the Cubs weren't good. The Cubs were a
- 43:36Speaker 4: very good team, really good lineup. that put together really
- 43:39Speaker 4: good at bats two years ago, Max Muncy came on
- 43:42Speaker 4: here before they won the first of their back-to-back championships.
- 43:44Speaker 4: And he said, you know what? There are differences in
- 43:47Speaker 4: regular season at bats and post-season at bats. And it
- 43:51Speaker 4: talked a lot about like working counts and all that stuff.
- 43:54Speaker 4: There's times for that, but there's also times where you
- 43:57Speaker 4: got to be like, I'm gonna go out and get
- 43:59Speaker 4: something and get the boys on the board.
- 44:03Speaker 1: I mean, the Cubs had one edge, AJ, in terms of,
- 44:08Speaker 1: season stats in my mind I guess you could point
- 44:11Speaker 1: to two like I'll give you the examples I'm talking
- 44:13Speaker 1: about the Cubs had the best offense from start to
- 44:16Speaker 1: finish this season but if I'm going into this series
- 44:18Speaker 1: I'm like the Padres were a top three offense in
- 44:21Speaker 1: the second half of the year and we know watching
- 44:23Speaker 1: baseball especially on offense like that matters just as much
- 44:26Speaker 1: as what you did in April May June like I
- 44:29Speaker 1: don't care as much about that right I'd rather take
- 44:30Speaker 1: which team was better in the second half so I
- 44:33Speaker 1: didn't feel like there was much of an offensive edge Defense,
- 44:35Speaker 1: the Cubs have been an elite defensive team. The Padres
- 44:37Speaker 1: are a really good defensive team too. So not much
- 44:39Speaker 1: of an edge there. And then when it came to pitching,
- 44:41Speaker 1: I mean, the Cubs have been through a ton of injuries.
- 44:44Speaker 1: They haven't signed some big arms that they've looked to
- 44:47Speaker 1: over the past few years. They've gotten a lot of
- 44:49Speaker 1: criticism for that. They've instead traded prospects and there was
- 44:51Speaker 1: people complaining, many fans complaining about prospects. They've traded for
- 44:55Speaker 1: guys like Edward Cabrera and Clay Holmes, but yeah, they
- 44:58Speaker 1: put themselves in that position between the pitching injuries and
- 45:00Speaker 1: not signing guys in the off season that they need.
- 45:03Speaker 1: They went the trade route.
- 45:04Speaker 4: Okay.
- 45:04Speaker 1: So, You're missing starting pitching arms. Their bullpen was in shambles.
- 45:08Speaker 1: And then you look at San Diego and you're like, oh,
- 45:10Speaker 1: they've got good starters and their bullpen is the best
- 45:12Speaker 1: in baseball.
- 45:14Speaker 4: Here's the thing, Scott.
- 45:15Speaker 2: When you're comparing offenses, you have to look at who
- 45:17Speaker 2: they're facing. Michael King with the stuff he's throwing, he
- 45:20Speaker 2: could have faced anybody. 27 Yankees, they weren't hitting that
- 45:23Speaker 2: stuff he was throwing in game one, right? And then
- 45:26Speaker 2: even Pavetta. But then after Pavetta, then you get the
- 45:29Speaker 2: cavalcade of power arms from Pavetta. from the Padres and
- 45:33Speaker 2: more hone Adam and Mason Miller.
- 45:34Speaker 4: Right.
- 45:35Speaker 2: So you've got to look at who you're hitting. You
- 45:37Speaker 2: can say, yeah, they had the best offense in baseball,
- 45:40Speaker 2: but then they didn't face the Padres pitching every day.
- 45:43Speaker 2: That's where things get different. If you want to compare
- 45:45Speaker 2: those two, I mean, the Padres faced the Dodgers 13
- 45:48Speaker 2: times who have really good pitching, you know, they, they
- 45:51Speaker 2: face whatever, but if you know, the Cubs faced the
- 45:56Speaker 2: Brewers and they struggled against the Brewers, good pitching at times.
- 45:59Speaker 2: So you have to look at it and say, Who
- 46:01Speaker 2: are they facing? You can't just say, all right, well,
- 46:03Speaker 2: they had a better offense. Well, okay, but then again,
- 46:06Speaker 2: who are you facing?
- 46:09Speaker 1: Well, now let's look at who they are facing. Time
- 46:12Speaker 1: for Cap It, presented by Lids. And here's what we're
- 46:21Speaker 1: going to do. Predictions, and then tell me why. So, AJ,
- 46:25Speaker 1: you're up first. Lids has great hats. You have them.
- 46:29Speaker 4: Explain. They do.
- 46:30Speaker 2: They do. First of all, this Padres hat is fire.
- 46:32Speaker 2: It's white, though, so it kind of is hard to see.
- 46:34Speaker 4: Oh, there you go.
- 46:36Speaker 1: I got it good.
- 46:36Speaker 2: And then I have a Brewers hat, which is a classic.
- 46:38Speaker 2: I'm one of the kids, Kratz. I keep the sticker
- 46:40Speaker 2: on my hat most of the time. But great logo,
- 46:45Speaker 2: great logo, great logo, great logo. Guess who I'm going
- 46:47Speaker 2: to predict is going to win? Neither team because I'm
- 46:50Speaker 2: calling this series, so I think it would be unethical
- 46:53Speaker 2: to pick a team to win. Here's the thing. Brewers
- 46:56Speaker 2: have been the best team all year. They can really pitch.
- 46:58Speaker 2: If Jacob Mizorowski goes out in game one and absolutely shoves,
- 47:02Speaker 2: it's going to be really hard for the Padres to win.
- 47:04Speaker 2: They have to find a way to get to Miz
- 47:06Speaker 2: and get into the bullpen early for the Brewers. I
- 47:08Speaker 2: don't know who's starting game one for the Padres yet.
- 47:10Speaker 2: They haven't named that guy. But the same thing for
- 47:13Speaker 2: the Brewers. They have to figure out a way to
- 47:15Speaker 2: get into the Padres' bullpen. And I'm not talking Adam
- 47:18Speaker 2: Miller and Morihona. I'm talking about some of the other guys,
- 47:20Speaker 2: Matt Sui and If they have to get Musgrove or
- 47:22Speaker 2: whoever it is, they have to. And whoever does a
- 47:25Speaker 2: better job of getting the starting pitchers out earlier is
- 47:28Speaker 2: going to win this series. I think the offenses are
- 47:30Speaker 2: pretty equal. They do it in different ways. I think
- 47:32Speaker 2: the defenses both are pretty good defensively. Both have really
- 47:35Speaker 2: good bullpens. But the one advantage I still believe the
- 47:39Speaker 2: Brewers have is in starting pitching. If the Padres can
- 47:41Speaker 2: get to there, the Brewers, they'll win. If the Brewers
- 47:44Speaker 2: get to the Padres starting pitching, they'll win. For me,
- 47:46Speaker 2: that's the breakdown that it matters.
- 47:49Speaker 1: All right.
- 47:50Speaker 4: I'm going to go Brewers also. I don't think you've chose,
- 47:53Speaker 4: but I know we chose before when we have to
- 47:55Speaker 4: make our predictions, but I'm wearing my Padres shirt that
- 48:00Speaker 4: I got when I was in spring training with the Padres.
- 48:03Speaker 4: I'm wearing my sick Padres hat that AJ just showed you,
- 48:06Speaker 4: but I'm going to go with the Brewers hat. And
- 48:09Speaker 4: the reason I'm going to go with the Brewers hat
- 48:11Speaker 4: is because I think this team has figured out what
- 48:16Speaker 4: they didn't have the years before in the postseason, what
- 48:19Speaker 4: they're what they're able to do to keep this team
- 48:23Speaker 4: from having an early exit out of the playoffs. I
- 48:27Speaker 4: think the thing that they're going to go up against
- 48:29Speaker 4: that's tough is the fact that the Padres are coming
- 48:32Speaker 4: in riding that high. They're coming in riding that, hey,
- 48:36Speaker 4: you know what? We're hitting. We're hitting. We have this
- 48:39Speaker 4: electric environment. I think they're going to come into Milwaukee
- 48:42Speaker 4: where the crowd is going to be just as electric
- 48:45Speaker 4: but against them. I know Brewers fans do not like
- 48:48Speaker 4: Manny Machado, so that will give Manny a little bit
- 48:51Speaker 4: extra juice to want to do well. But I also
- 48:54Speaker 4: think that exactly what AJ said is where this team,
- 48:58Speaker 4: if the Padres can figure out how to beat Miz
- 49:01Speaker 4: or even be in the game when Miz gets out
- 49:04Speaker 4: of the game, I think they're going to have a
- 49:07Speaker 4: vote of confidence that they already have, but they're going
- 49:09Speaker 4: to see on the field. And I think that's where
- 49:12Speaker 4: they could take the Brewers down. But I think the Brewers'
- 49:14Speaker 4: understanding that their approach as a team and their lineup
- 49:18Speaker 4: is enough to be the best of the best. And
- 49:21Speaker 4: that's what they're going to be facing with the Padres
- 49:24Speaker 4: pitching staff, in my opinion, after they're starting pitchers.
- 49:29Speaker 2: Kratz. Kratz. Can we get a.
- 49:34Speaker 4: That's what I look like. I feel like... I like it.
- 49:37Speaker 4: The hat?
- 49:38Speaker 2: I love the hat. You know what it has? It
- 49:41Speaker 2: has a military profile to it. So it looks like
- 49:43Speaker 2: Kratz is going into the Navy SEALs and Coronado over
- 49:46Speaker 2: there to lead the squad.
- 49:49Speaker 4: I'm holding it. So obviously I have to wear it.
- 49:51Speaker 4: You're supposed to wear it lower. But if I do that,
- 49:54Speaker 4: then you see, you know, you got like shadow over
- 49:56Speaker 4: the eyes. So I have it high. The new brim,
- 49:59Speaker 4: I'm going to show, unfortunately, another hat. But like the brim,
- 50:03Speaker 4: I mean the brim, the top, the crease, so fresh.
- 50:07Speaker 4: So fresh. Maybe not for the light shining here, but
- 50:11Speaker 4: it is so fresh with the snapback and everything. Oh,
- 50:19Speaker 4: the Rays.
- 50:21Speaker 1: Can I finish with a question for you guys? You're
- 50:23Speaker 1: jumping ahead to a different segment, but can I finish
- 50:26Speaker 1: with a question for you guys? Do you think that
- 50:29Speaker 1: the Padres are a tougher test than what the Dodgers
- 50:37Speaker 1: will have in either the Phillies or the Braves based
- 50:39Speaker 1: on how they're playing right now. Me too.
- 50:44Speaker 2: Also, I think because the pitching is way different for,
- 50:48Speaker 2: for the Phillies or Braves. I mean, the Padres have
- 50:51Speaker 2: better pitching and I think the Phil geez, depending on
- 50:54Speaker 2: how the, I mean, this game goes, I guess game one,
- 50:56Speaker 2: you're going to have Wheeler for the, depending if he
- 50:58Speaker 2: pitches in this game, right. For the Phillies and Chris sale,
- 51:01Speaker 2: can't pitch game one. He's going to probably have to
- 51:03Speaker 2: pitch game two, I guess. So, Then who pitches game
- 51:06Speaker 2: one if the Braves win? It's like, oh, man, we
- 51:09Speaker 2: might only have to face Sale one time in a
- 51:11Speaker 2: five-game series. That's pretty nice. But I think the Padres
- 51:17Speaker 2: are a tough matchup, man. Plus, the Phillies or Braves
- 51:20Speaker 2: have to fight cross-country. We all know how that affected
- 51:22Speaker 2: the Red Sox so much. I think this is a
- 51:25Speaker 2: tough matchup for both Padres and Brewers.
- 51:29Speaker 4: I think it is huge that the Padres got through
- 51:33Speaker 4: that first round in two games. I'm not saying that
- 51:37Speaker 4: Mason Miller was going to get tired or that, that
- 51:41Speaker 4: Adam was going to get tired of Maury hole. And
- 51:42Speaker 4: those guys are gonna get tired. But the fact that
- 51:44Speaker 4: they get two days off is huge because the national
- 51:47Speaker 4: league doesn't have that extra, doesn't have that extra built
- 51:51Speaker 4: in between game one and game two. I think that
- 51:54Speaker 4: could possibly, if that's what the case was, I could
- 51:57Speaker 4: swing a series for the Padres. If they had that,
- 52:01Speaker 4: extra extra off day built in to there because they
- 52:04Speaker 4: already pitched through this and they could have Michael King
- 52:07Speaker 4: throw in earlier, all that stuff.
- 52:11Speaker 1: Well, you heard it from Kratz. We understand he did
- 52:14Speaker 1: play for the Brewers. Some Padres fans don't love him.
- 52:19Speaker 1: That's been well documented in the past, but he is
- 52:21Speaker 1: wearing a little Padres.
- 52:23Speaker 2: Is Kratz a Brewers? Is he a Brewers fan? Because
- 52:25Speaker 2: he just, you already said on the show, he's not
- 52:26Speaker 2: a Phillies fan. So are you, are you a Brewers fan?
- 52:28Speaker 2: Are you a Padres? What fan are you? I, I
- 52:32Speaker 2: explain this to so many people. It's hard.
- 52:34Speaker 4: I'm not a fan of a team. I'll watch a
- 52:36Speaker 4: team that somebody will say I'm a fan of and
- 52:39Speaker 4: I'll enjoy watching that guy. I'm a fan of the
- 52:42Speaker 4: game and I'm a fan of who is in the
- 52:45Speaker 4: box or who is on the mound. I don't, I
- 52:48Speaker 4: don't cheer. I don't have like, Ooh, I got to
- 52:50Speaker 4: wear my whatever gear. I don't, I got, I am truly,
- 52:54Speaker 4: I lost my ability to have fan this. I don't know,
- 52:58Speaker 4: somewhere in like 2011, 2012.
- 53:03Speaker 1: That's why Kratz wears a variety of gear every day. Hey,
- 53:08Speaker 1: there's a lot of this that I see online. I mean,
- 53:13Speaker 1: for a while now, but it's heating up, right? So KP,
- 53:16Speaker 1: Kevin Pillar, our guy, responded to someone yesterday. Like we
- 53:20Speaker 1: posted a Bluebird territory clip. They're talking about, you know,
- 53:22Speaker 1: what the team needs to do and how they didn't
- 53:25Speaker 1: feel like they put the best roster together, blah, blah, blah, right?
- 53:27Speaker 1: And then you've got some random dude being like, talks
- 53:29Speaker 1: like he's a legend, man. I hate it. And Pillar
- 53:32Speaker 1: is like, I talk like I've been in a major
- 53:34Speaker 1: league clubhouse for a bunch of different teams and understand
- 53:36Speaker 1: the way front offices think and operate. No ego here.
- 53:38Speaker 1: Just sharing my opinion and some insight. I'll let you
- 53:43Speaker 1: guys handle it. I mean, I get this too. If
- 53:44Speaker 1: I drop a comment to somebody's tweet, it's like, oh, well,
- 53:49Speaker 1: glad you're chiming in. I'm like, oh, so I'm not allowed?
- 53:52Speaker 1: What do you want?
- 53:54Speaker 2: When has it been cool to challenge somebody that has
- 53:56Speaker 2: been in this situation, Krautsy? Been in a clubhouse, been
- 54:00Speaker 2: in a Been in the batter's box. I did a
- 54:08Speaker 2: radio interview today in Atlanta, and they were asking me questions.
- 54:10Speaker 2: And I said, until you've stepped into the batter's box
- 54:15Speaker 2: or the pitcher's mound and the game is on the
- 54:17Speaker 2: line or the playoffs are on the line, you don't
- 54:19Speaker 2: know how you're going to react. And people react differently,
- 54:22Speaker 2: and there is a clutch gene. And then people sitting
- 54:25Speaker 2: on the couch, sitting there watching the game, and I
- 54:27Speaker 2: know this as an announcer now, the game looks really
- 54:30Speaker 2: easy as an announcer. I know it's really hard. So
- 54:34Speaker 2: it's really easy when you're sitting on the couch like, gosh,
- 54:36Speaker 2: how do you miss that slider? But until you're in
- 54:37Speaker 2: that box, feel the emotions, feel the adrenaline, feel your heartbeat.
- 54:41Speaker 2: It's indescribable. That's the only word I can come up with.
- 54:44Speaker 2: It's indescribable because you don't know until you've been there.
- 54:48Speaker 4: And everybody wants to give their opinion on what our
- 54:51Speaker 4: opinion is. The reason we have this show, the reason
- 54:54Speaker 4: people tune in to X Players is because we've had
- 54:57Speaker 4: that experience. So KP comes from a spot where he
- 55:01Speaker 4: grinded through part of his career and was a really
- 55:04Speaker 4: good player. AJ is a better player, had a better
- 55:07Speaker 4: career than KP, and I had a worse career than
- 55:10Speaker 4: both of them. Because of being in those spots, you
- 55:14Speaker 4: just understand the emotions and the opportunity is rare. And
- 55:22Speaker 4: so when people call you out online and they're like,
- 55:24Speaker 4: what do you know? You weren't a Hall of Famer.
- 55:27Speaker 4: You are correct. And the way I say it, when
- 55:29Speaker 4: I talk to people, I was never better than many
- 55:33Speaker 4: of the people I played against, but I'm way better
- 55:36Speaker 4: than everybody in this room. So that's how, that's how,
- 55:40Speaker 4: you know, and people are always going to compare everybody
- 55:43Speaker 4: to everybody. LeBron to MJ, you know, Tiger to Tiger
- 55:47Speaker 4: and Phil, you know, everybody's always going to be compared.
- 55:53Speaker 1: Let's hit another series prediction with Capit presented by Lids. AJ, ALDS,
- 56:00Speaker 1: Yankees and Rays, heavyweight showdown.
- 56:03Speaker 2: Bro, come on, bro. Come on, bro. We already know.
- 56:08Speaker 2: I'm going with the Tom Brady hat, bro. Come on,
- 56:12Speaker 2: Tampa Bay. Tampa Bay, let's go. You know I'm rooting
- 56:14Speaker 2: for the team from Florida.
- 56:15Speaker 4: Come on, y'all.
- 56:16Speaker 3: Why?
- 56:16Speaker 2: Because they're the best record in– In the AL this year,
- 56:22Speaker 2: and I picked him to go to the World Series. So, yeah,
- 56:24Speaker 2: I'm riding with my boys. They're doing it the Ray way.
- 56:30Speaker 1: Do you think, I mean, Judge is a factor in this.
- 56:33Speaker 1: If he's back, would it change anything for you? Doesn't matter.
- 56:37Speaker 2: I just think the Rays have something this year. I
- 56:39Speaker 2: think they figured something out. I think Caminero, Aranda. Liam
- 56:44Speaker 2: Hicks in the middle of the lineup, Chandler Simpson, Yandy Diaz.
- 56:47Speaker 2: I forgot. I meant to look up the record versus
- 56:50Speaker 2: the Yankees this year. Do we know what it was?
- 56:54Speaker 2: The season series this year. The Rays won it. I
- 56:56Speaker 2: know that, but what was it?
- 56:57Speaker 1: I don't know.
- 57:03Speaker 2: But they got to play three games in the trough.
- 57:05Speaker 4: Wait, what was it?
- 57:06Speaker 1: 7-6.
- 57:06Speaker 4: 7-6 Yankees.
- 57:08Speaker 2: I mean, sorry, 7-6 Rays.
- 57:09Speaker 4: 7-6 Rays. My bad. So tight.
- 57:13Speaker 2: But they've got to play three of those five games
- 57:15Speaker 2: in the trop, and we all know the trop is
- 57:17Speaker 2: not fun to play. They're not playing in Steinberger Field anymore.
- 57:22Speaker 2: And Schlittler can't pitch until game two.
- 57:26Speaker 4: That means Schlittler can pitch in game two and in
- 57:31Speaker 4: game five. And I think the depth of the Yankees'
- 57:37Speaker 4: starting rotation– is going to beat out what the Rays'
- 57:42Speaker 4: depth is. And I also think what I saw from
- 57:45Speaker 4: this last series against the Red Sox, I think Chad
- 57:49Speaker 4: Tracy made a few myth moves. I don't think they
- 57:52Speaker 4: would have scored as many runs had they kept Peyton
- 57:55Speaker 4: Tolley and Sonny Graham, but they outlasted the other guys.
- 58:01Speaker 4: They outlasted that team, and then they finally got to
- 58:04Speaker 4: somebody in their rotation or in their bullpen that they
- 58:08Speaker 4: were able to do damage. And I just think it's
- 58:10Speaker 4: coming from different places. They did all of it against
- 58:13Speaker 4: the Red Sox without Judge, without using Stanton off the bench.
- 58:19Speaker 4: And I think the Yankees are going to the World Series,
- 58:24Speaker 4: but I think this series will determine who wins the
- 58:28Speaker 4: American League.
- 58:29Speaker 1: Very different manager experience matchup here, too. Chad Tracy had
- 58:36Speaker 1: not done anything like this. Kevin Cash has been managing
- 58:38Speaker 1: for a long time.
- 58:40Speaker 4: Oh, Cash versus Tracy. I thought you meant Boone versus Cash. No, sorry.
- 58:44Speaker 1: Cash versus Tracy. I mean, man, Kevin Cash has been
- 58:47Speaker 1: doing this for a long time. And yeah, he's lockstep
- 58:50Speaker 1: with the front office, but he'll do his own thing.
- 58:53Speaker 1: He has learned from past mistakes too. Kevin Cash is
- 58:55Speaker 1: not perfect, right? He's got something sitting on him. That
- 58:59Speaker 1: Blake Snell story will come up if one of the
- 59:02Speaker 1: starters are dealing and there's a decision to make. There's
- 59:04Speaker 1: some big boy starters on the race that have put
- 59:07Speaker 1: up numbers this year. Drew Rasmussen. nick martinez unfortunately his
- 59:14Speaker 1: hands hurt he's not going to pitch in this series
- 59:16Speaker 1: their bullpen's really good well that's what makes things interesting
- 59:19Speaker 1: aj is how you're going to balance this now i
- 59:22Speaker 1: don't know if uh starter's going to have whatever snell
- 59:25Speaker 1: was doing But if they do and they're dealing like
- 59:28Speaker 1: that and one guy gets on, that flashback is going
- 59:33Speaker 1: to pop up.
- 59:34Speaker 2: The Rays have DJ Kitty, too, so let's not forget that.
- 59:37Speaker 4: That's like their rally monkey.
- 59:40Speaker 1: It's a better mascot than what the Yankees have. The
- 59:42Speaker 1: Yankees don't have a mascot.
- 59:44Speaker 2: I mean, they got a Ray out there in right center.
- 59:45Speaker 2: I mean, they got new ownership. I mean, the Rays
- 59:47Speaker 2: are doing it right now.
- 59:49Speaker 4: They got gimmicks. They got gimmicks. It's going to be
- 59:52Speaker 4: the ultimate. Besides Junior Caminero and the fact that Aranda's
- 59:56Speaker 4: hitting more home runs, it's going to be the ultimate
- 59:59Speaker 4: what plays. Is it the home runs? Is it the contact?
- 1:00:04Speaker 4: Because Yankee pitching strikes out a lot of guys. They
- 1:00:08Speaker 4: thrive on striking dudes out. And I don't care if
- 1:00:11Speaker 4: it's the playoffs or not. I don't see this lineup
- 1:00:14Speaker 4: striking out a ton. I don't see them doing a
- 1:00:16Speaker 4: lot of damage in the air. So are they going
- 1:00:20Speaker 4: to be able to run on Austin Wells? To me,
- 1:00:26Speaker 4: I think the big X factor in this series for
- 1:00:28Speaker 4: pitching is going to be Max Freed. How does Max
- 1:00:31Speaker 4: Freed match up against your Nick Martinez or your Ian Seymour,
- 1:00:36Speaker 4: whoever their second, third starter is going to be for
- 1:00:38Speaker 4: the Rays? Because Max Freed controls some things that the
- 1:00:44Speaker 4: Rays really excel at doing. It's that small ball game,
- 1:00:49Speaker 4: and I think that's where That's where it will be
- 1:00:52Speaker 4: interesting to me. And I think they hit lefties a
- 1:00:54Speaker 4: little bit better, the Rays do.
- 1:00:57Speaker 1: And there will be more heat on the Yankees' bullpen, right?
- 1:01:00Speaker 1: That will be an interesting test.
- 1:01:04Speaker 2: It comes down to this. When you play the Yankees,
- 1:01:06Speaker 2: can you keep them in the park? That's it. If
- 1:01:09Speaker 2: you keep the Yankees in the park, you beat them.
- 1:01:11Speaker 2: Can you keep the Yankees in the park? If you
- 1:01:12Speaker 2: do that, you'll win most of the time. Seriously, that's
- 1:01:17Speaker 2: the key. If the Rays can keep the Yankees in
- 1:01:19Speaker 2: the park, The Red Sox couldn't keep the Yankees in
- 1:01:22Speaker 2: the park. They lost two games. If the Rays can
- 1:01:24Speaker 2: keep them in the park, you usually beat the Yankees.
- 1:01:27Speaker 2: That's been the story for the last few years of
- 1:01:30Speaker 2: the Yankees. When they hit home runs, they win. When
- 1:01:31Speaker 2: they don't, they don't win.
- 1:01:35Speaker 1: That's how they're built. It's a power organization, right? They
- 1:01:39Speaker 1: look for velocity. They look for exit velocity, all of that, right?
- 1:01:42Speaker 1: You see it from their starting pitchers. You see it
- 1:01:44Speaker 1: from their bats. Relievers, it kind of depends on the year,
- 1:01:48Speaker 1: but this is what the brand of baseball looks like
- 1:01:52Speaker 1: for the Yankees. On the offensive side, it's as power-reliant
- 1:01:57Speaker 1: as it gets.
- 1:02:00Speaker 4: It's not creative. It is power baseball. If you hit
- 1:02:04Speaker 4: the ball the hardest, the Yankees want you. At one point,
- 1:02:07Speaker 4: they had three of the top four average extra velocity
- 1:02:10Speaker 4: guys in baseball. That's who they go after. That's who
- 1:02:13Speaker 4: they want. They want velocity out of the bullpen. If
- 1:02:16Speaker 4: they have it, they want the guys where the Rays,
- 1:02:19Speaker 4: they're going to have They're going to have six guys
- 1:02:22Speaker 4: out of the bullpen that throw anywhere from this arm
- 1:02:24Speaker 4: slot to this one to this one over here to
- 1:02:27Speaker 4: the left side where your lineup is going to have,
- 1:02:30Speaker 4: you know, against Max Breed, they're going to have Ryan Valade.
- 1:02:34Speaker 4: Who knows who Ryan Valade is outside of Tampa Bay
- 1:02:37Speaker 4: Rays fans? Like he's going to probably be hitting third
- 1:02:40Speaker 4: or fourth in that lineup. So they do a ton
- 1:02:43Speaker 4: of different things.
- 1:02:44Speaker 1: Yeah, you'll learn Mesa Jr. too. There's some guys to
- 1:02:46Speaker 1: learn about with the race that'll get national attention. Hey, Cap,
- 1:02:50Speaker 1: it is presented by Lids, your home for all postseason

- 1:03:01Speaker 1: Do apply and let us know who you think is
- 1:03:03Speaker 1: going to win this series. Hey, let's slap. While we
- 1:03:20Speaker 1: have 40 seconds here, Padres owner Jose Feliciano was wearing
- 1:03:24Speaker 1: shoes that honor Peter Seidler with PS on the back.
- 1:03:27Speaker 1: I thought that was really cool. Hey, there are presents already, AJ.
- 1:03:32Speaker 1: His wife, Kwanza Jones, was partying and dancing with Tatis.
- 1:03:36Speaker 1: They had a little dance routine number. It's fun. I
- 1:03:39Speaker 1: like the fandom. I would say the party power rankings...
- 1:03:43Speaker 1: have the White Sox first and the Padres second, and
- 1:03:47Speaker 1: then everybody else is in another tier below. And they
- 1:03:51Speaker 1: party in different ways, but those two have a lot
- 1:03:53Speaker 1: of viral moments, those two teams. And then the rest
- 1:03:56Speaker 1: of the teams have more of a regular party going on.
- 1:04:01Speaker 2: I'll tell you one thing, 2005 White Sox, nobody can
- 1:04:05Speaker 2: party with that team. And I ain't just talking in celebrations.
- 1:04:09Speaker 2: And I ain't talking about just in celebrations. Not even close.
- 1:04:13Speaker 2: I'll put that team up against the 86 Mets.
- 1:04:17Speaker 4: Party hard, play hard, win hard. I've never seen it
- 1:04:23Speaker 4: not work that way.
- 1:04:26Speaker 1: Well, I mean, in some ways the White Sox are wild, right?
- 1:04:31Speaker 1: In other ways, it's celibate for Sean. They're all going
- 1:04:35Speaker 1: to be sporting those shirts. So they're kind of– you've
- 1:04:39Speaker 1: got like celibate for Sean and the Pope. And then
- 1:04:41Speaker 1: the other side is Murakami yelling everyone's drunk. They really
- 1:04:47Speaker 1: have something for everyone.
- 1:04:49Speaker 2: How do we not have a wizard Mike Vassel shirt
- 1:04:51Speaker 2: out there for everyone to buy too?
- 1:04:53Speaker 4: We can do that.
- 1:04:54Speaker 1: I feel like that's so a few months ago. Celebrate
- 1:04:58Speaker 1: for Sean is like a thing out in the South.
- 1:05:01Speaker 2: He still wears, he still wears the hat. He still
- 1:05:03Speaker 2: has the wand. I mean, he's still, he's still doing
- 1:05:05Speaker 2: his mascot as a, as a magic, magic guy, magician. So,
- 1:05:10Speaker 2: I mean, listen, I love Mike Vassell. He is funny
- 1:05:12Speaker 2: as hell.
- 1:05:13Speaker 4: Sean better check his DMs. Let's put it that way.
- 1:05:19Speaker 2: Are you DM'd him?
- 1:05:21Speaker 4: Not me. Not me.
- 1:05:22Speaker 2: I was like, I can just send you his number.
- 1:05:25Speaker 2: I can just call. I can just text him if
- 1:05:26Speaker 2: you want.
- 1:05:27Speaker 4: Yeah, I mean, his phone's blown up enough, AJ. Don't
- 1:05:30Speaker 4: bother him. He sent out the bat signal, and it
- 1:05:33Speaker 4: is being seen all over Chicago right now. He's got
- 1:05:37Speaker 4: a family.
- 1:05:38Speaker 1: No girlfriend, but he's got a family.
- 1:05:40Speaker 2: No kids.
- 1:05:42Speaker 4: No kids.
- 1:05:44Speaker 2: Ain't got no job.
- 1:05:46Speaker 4: It's Friday.
- 1:05:53Speaker 1: There are odds boost tokens flying around those BetMGM apps.
