- 0:00Hey guys, back for another episode of Trump's
- 0:02The Art of the Deal, TrumpCard's Elements of
- 0:04the Deal. Deliver the goods, Trump says. You
- 0:07can't con people, at least not for long. You
- 0:09can create excitement, you can do wonderful promotion,
- 0:12and get all kinds of press, and you can throw
- 0:14in a little hyperbole, but if you don't deliver
- 0:16the goods, people will eventually catch on. So,
- 0:20of course, Trump here is talking about the business
- 0:23world where you better deliver a quality product
- 0:26and back up the fancy marketing with an equally
- 0:31promising service and goods. But here he's going
- 0:35to apply it first to the realm of politics. And
- 0:37what I want you to keep in mind is that this
- 0:39book is written in 1987. Trump is still a younger
- 0:44man. This is how he characterizes the presidencies
- 0:48of Jimmy Carter and then of Ronald Reagan. So
- 0:51you'll see that he always says things as they
- 0:55are or as he sees them. I think of Jimmy Carter
- 0:58after he lost the election to Ronald Reagan.
- 1:00Carter came to see me in my office. He told me
- 1:03he was seeking contributions to the Jimmy Carter
- 1:05library. I asked how much he had in mind. And
- 1:08he said, Donald, I would be very appreciative
- 1:10if you contributed $5 million. I was dumbfounded.
- 1:14I didn't even answer him. But that experience
- 1:17also taught me something. Until then, I'd never
- 1:19understood how Jimmy Carter became president.
- 1:21The answer is that as poorly qualified as he
- 1:24was for the job, Jimmy Carter had the nerve,
- 1:26the guts, the balls to ask for something extraordinary.
- 1:30That ability above all helped him get elected
- 1:33president. But then, of course, the American
- 1:35people caught on pretty quickly that Carter couldn't
- 1:38do the job, and he lost in a landslide when he
- 1:41ran for re -election. So job seeking at Jimmy
- 1:44Carter, then in there in 1987. Now he adds, you
- 1:48see it's not about partisan politics. Here it
- 1:53is purely about what he observed. Look what he
- 1:56says about Ronald Reagan. Ronald Reagan is another
- 1:59example. He is so smooth and so effective a performer
- 2:02that he completed that smile. So when Trump publishes
- 2:06these sentences, Ronald Reagan is still in office.
- 2:12you see that he is really speaking his heart
- 2:16and is relating what his eyes see. What he realizes
- 2:21is that, yes, after eight years of Ronald Reagan,
- 2:23the country still has issues and that the promises
- 2:27or the promise of the Ronald Reagan presidency
- 2:30wasn't achieved at the end of the eight years.
- 2:34So he's a little disappointed. What we get from
- 2:37this is that Jimmy Carter was a salesman. But
- 2:40unfortunately didn't have the goods and that
- 2:42Ronald Reagan was also a salesman, but didn't
- 2:45deliver the goods. For me, the mission of his
- 2:46life is to be the salesman and to deliver the
- 2:49goods. And this is how long Trump has been thinking
- 2:52about politics. So a good, we can say 40 plus
- 2:56years ago, he was already having thoughts on
- 2:59politics and on the presidency. If we see earlier
- 3:05videos of his interviews, then all of his views
- 3:08have been extremely consistent. And also what
- 3:11I mean here is his criticism of leadership has
- 3:15not changed. He likes leaders who back words
- 3:18with action and he doesn't like leaders who don't.
- 3:22Although he, of course, is an expert salesman,
- 3:26he backs it up. And I think this is really what
- 3:29he means here by deliver the goods. Now he's
- 3:31going to go more on the business side and say,
- 3:34that in his business the real estate development
- 3:36business is full of people who talk a good game
- 3:38but don't deliver when trump tower became successful
- 3:41a lot of developers got the idea of imitating
- 3:43our atrium and they ordered that their architects
- 3:45to come up with a design the drawings would come
- 3:47back and they would start costing out the job
- 3:49what they discovered is that the bronze escalators
- 3:52were going to cost a million dollars extra The
- 3:54waterfall was going to cost $2 million. And the
- 3:57marble was going to cost many millions more.
- 3:59They saw that it all added up to many millions
- 4:01of dollars. And all of a sudden, these people
- 4:04with these great ambitions will decide, well,
- 4:06let's forget about the atrium. The dollar always
- 4:08talks in the end. I'm lucky because I work in
- 4:11a very special niche at the top of the market.
- 4:14And I can't afford to spend top dollars to build
- 4:16the best. I promoted the hell out of Trump Tower,
- 4:19but I also had a great product to promote. Needless
- 4:21to say. The luxury business can be expensive,
- 4:24but Trump carved out a niche for himself where
- 4:27he was only selling really the top notch, top
- 4:31of the line assets. And so he could afford to
- 4:35add in very expensive elements like if you go
- 4:38to Trump Tower, the fully marbled out walls.
- 4:43For another developer that doesn't sell as much
- 4:46of a dream would be harder to justify. And so
- 4:50as good as your promise is, make sure that you
- 4:52deliver the goods. And this is the lesson from
- 4:55this mini chapter.
