Latest / Hurdle with Emily Abbate / 5-MINUTE FRIDAY: Escaping the Comparison Trap
Transcript
- 0:20Speaker 1: Hey, everyone, Emily Abadi here you are listening to five
- 0:24Speaker 1: minute Friday from Hurdle.
- 0:26Speaker 2: I'm feeling really excited right now.
- 0:28Speaker 1: I'm feeling really excited right now because this morning I
- 0:32Speaker 1: woke up in Brooklyn and I rode a city bike
- 0:36Speaker 1: over to McCarran Park, which is a park in Williamsburg,
- 0:40Speaker 1: and I did a mile time trial. And I did
- 0:42Speaker 1: this time trial because I wanted to get a baseline
- 0:45Speaker 1: of what my mile time is right now where I
- 0:48Speaker 1: am in this phase to design a training plan around
- 0:53Speaker 1: for a ten k that I'm running in June. It's
- 0:56Speaker 1: the mini ten k that New York Roadrunners puts on.
- 1:00Speaker 1: And I ran the mile and it felt hard, but
- 1:04Speaker 1: it felt good and I did it in six fifty two,
- 1:08Speaker 1: and I felt so stoked and excited about that. And
- 1:11Speaker 1: I was doing my little cool down after the mile
- 1:15Speaker 1: that I ran, and I had this moment of great
- 1:21Speaker 1: appreciation because I realized that for the first time in
- 1:25Speaker 1: a long time, I'm like nobs. I was so proud
- 1:30Speaker 1: of Emily as I am in this moment, and I
- 1:33Speaker 1: wasn't comparing that six fifty two to the Emily of
- 1:37Speaker 1: the olden days, like my mile personal best time is
- 1:43Speaker 1: I think. I think it's five point fifty six, it's
- 1:45Speaker 1: sub six, and that is something that I did in
- 1:50Speaker 1: twenty twenty. It's almost it's three and a half years
- 1:54Speaker 1: later now and my mile is nowhere near that time.
- 1:58Speaker 2: And I am not phased.
- 2:01Speaker 1: I'm not phased at all, because how can I expect
- 2:03Speaker 1: myself to do something right now that I haven't been
- 2:07Speaker 1: preparing for. It's not like you wake up one day
- 2:10Speaker 1: and you have your dream job right.
- 2:13Speaker 2: You work toward this point.
- 2:15Speaker 1: You work toward a point where you achieve a certain
- 2:18Speaker 1: amount of status and have a certain amount of accolades
- 2:21Speaker 1: and a crew a certain amount accomplishments to get to
- 2:24Speaker 1: that pivotal moment. And the same goes for running. I
- 2:28Speaker 1: have had moments within running where I have been faster,
- 2:32Speaker 1: and other moments that I've felt really accomplished, like today
- 2:35Speaker 1: that really actually didn't have anything to do with speed.
- 2:39Speaker 1: Today was about a feeling. And so I maybe I'm rambling,
- 2:44Speaker 1: but I think that so often. You know, I'm telling myself,
- 2:49Speaker 1: don't compare yourself, don't compare yourself, don't compare myself.
- 2:52Speaker 2: And I didn't and I'm not and I'm.
- 2:56Speaker 1: Still so stoked that I showed up and I did
- 3:00Speaker 1: this hard thing, and now I can meet myself with
- 3:03Speaker 1: where I'm at and figure out what works right for
- 3:06Speaker 1: Emily as I am in this phase of my journey.
- 3:12Speaker 2: And it feels really nice. And so I'm.
- 3:14Speaker 1: Sharing this story with you today because it happens a lot, right,
- 3:17Speaker 1: It happens a lot that we compare ourselves to past
- 3:20Speaker 1: versions of ourselves. But how cool is it right now
- 3:22Speaker 1: that I have my past self as an inspiration.
- 3:28Speaker 2: Really, I'm looking to my past.
- 3:30Speaker 1: Accomplishments as motivation to work hard, to pick up the
- 3:35Speaker 1: pace to try something that I haven't done in a
- 3:38Speaker 1: long time, and meeting myself with grace and having compassion
- 3:41Speaker 1: for where I'm at right now, and that it's not
- 3:45Speaker 1: something that happens overnight, getting to this place of compassion,
- 3:49Speaker 1: and I'm so proud. I'm so so proud that this
- 3:53Speaker 1: is where I'm living in this moment. Why do we
- 3:56Speaker 1: rid ourselves of the joy of our accomplishments just because
- 3:59Speaker 1: they've different now than they once did. There's so much
- 4:03Speaker 1: more out there, right, There's so much to be happy about.
- 4:07Speaker 1: And instead of robbing yourself of joy and putting extra
- 4:11Speaker 1: unnecessary hurdles within your journey. I encourage you too to embrace.
- 4:17Speaker 1: What is my listener prompt for you this week? What
- 4:21Speaker 1: is one thing you're looking forward to over the next
- 4:24Speaker 1: three months? What's one thing you're looking forward to over
- 4:28Speaker 1: the next three months? I mentioned I have a ten K,
- 4:30Speaker 1: so I'm curious and also answer this on social tag
- 4:34Speaker 1: me I want to talk now a listener question.
- 4:39Speaker 3: Hi Emily, my name is Megan, and my question for
- 4:42Speaker 3: you is what is your best advice for a recent
- 4:46Speaker 3: college graduate who's still trying to find their place in
- 4:49Speaker 3: the real world.
- 4:50Speaker 2: You have so much runway ahead of you.
- 4:54Speaker 1: I think that when I graduated college, I was so
- 4:56Speaker 1: concerned about feeling as though I needed to have it
- 4:59Speaker 1: all figured out. And it's kind of crazy in retrospect
- 5:02Speaker 1: that at eighteen you go into this institute of higher education,
- 5:06Speaker 1: higher learning, and they want you to choose a major
- 5:09Speaker 1: and choose your path. Like at eighteen, I had an
- 5:13Speaker 1: inkling of what I wanted to do. But it is
- 5:15Speaker 1: so understandable if you are unsure, because there's so much
- 5:21Speaker 1: learning that happens between eighteen and twenty two during college
- 5:26Speaker 1: and then beyond that. I learn every single day and
- 5:30Speaker 1: I'm in my mid thirties and I plan on continuing
- 5:33Speaker 1: that act of learning for the rest of my days,
- 5:37Speaker 1: and so right now I would tell you, a don't
- 5:40Speaker 1: put so much pressure on yourself to have it all
- 5:42Speaker 1: figured out.
- 5:43Speaker 2: You will not, and that's okay.
- 5:45Speaker 1: And be talk to as many individuals as you can
- 5:48Speaker 1: to keep learning, whether or not they are in your field.
- 5:51Speaker 1: When I left Self Magazine, after the magazine folded and
- 5:55Speaker 1: I was freelance writing, I made a point of talking
- 5:59Speaker 1: to as many people as I could in a myriad
- 6:01Speaker 1: of different industries just to learn more about what it
- 6:04Speaker 1: meant to be a banker or someone that worked in
- 6:07Speaker 1: sport marketing or someone that is an architect. I wanted
- 6:11Speaker 1: to learn about all different aspects of so many different
- 6:14Speaker 1: careers and that was not only such a fun time,
- 6:17Speaker 1: but gave me so much insight into the world of
- 6:20Speaker 1: opportunity that is out there. Again, it's okay if you
- 6:23Speaker 1: don't have it all figured out, nobody does. Do you
- 6:27Speaker 1: trust your gut and know that there's a lot of
- 6:30Speaker 1: runway ahead of you.
- 6:32Speaker 2: Make sure you're.
- 6:33Speaker 1: Following along on Instagram at Hurdle Podcast, at Emily Body
