- 0:00Hi everyone. Welcome to Mini Scroll, the
- 0:03daily Internet culture podcast bringing you the biggest stories
- 0:06from social media, the creator economy and the digital space
- 0:10every Monday through Thursday. I'm your host, Lauren Meissner,
- 0:14the founder of the youth digital media brand Centennial World.
- 0:19Welcome back to Mini Scroll everyone.
- 0:22Before I get started, I did want to say we have seen, we have
- 0:26noticed that a lot of you guys are starting to recommend us in
- 0:30different podcast threads on Reddit and it helps us so much.
- 0:34So thank you guys so much for doing that for shouting us out.
- 0:38I know there's a lot of people right now who are re evaluating
- 0:41like what kind of pop culture podcast they want to listen to.
- 0:44So it really helps when you guys recommend us.
- 0:47So please keep it going. We always get asked like how you
- 0:51guys can support us best and obviously leaving reviews,
- 0:55Spotify ratings, Apple reviews, and also commenting on Reddit
- 1:00when people ask for recommendations like those are
- 1:02the best ways to support us right now.
- 1:04All right, let's get in to the stories for today.
- 1:07I have four stories for you guys and the first one I imagine will
- 1:11be the only thing I talk about related to the Super Bowl, but
- 1:13we will see. Unless something really crazy
- 1:15happens tomorrow or today. I guess it's happening.
- 1:17Like actually, I think it's happening right now.
- 1:19I don't really know. I'm not a sports girlie and
- 1:21honestly, I don't really care, but this is probably going to be
- 1:26the only Super Bowl adjacent story that I have.
- 1:29So Poppy is going viral yet again for their creative
- 1:33influencer strategy this time around the Super Bowl.
- 1:36So the soda brand particularly thrives in their strategy around
- 1:41specific events like Coachella and now the Super Bowl.
- 1:45As part of their Super Bowl influencer campaign this year,
- 1:48they have been gifting creators with full-sized vending machines
- 1:52filled with poppy delivered to their homes so that they can
- 1:56host I guess, Super Bowl parties with their friends and have tons
- 2:01of poppy available. As Caroline Albro writes for her
- 2:04newsletter, Brand Baby Quote, I think that vending machines are
- 2:08having a moment. Just this morning, good thinking
- 2:11called out that Sephora is putting vending machines on
- 2:14college campuses. Everyone in the comments is like
- 2:17thank God my college campus doesn't have this or else I'd be
- 2:20broke. Vending machines are a fun,
- 2:22nostalgic, accessible way to bring your product directly to
- 2:25the places you want it to be seen.
- 2:27Instead of customers having to go to a store or purchase your
- 2:31products, you can bring your products closer to your
- 2:33customer, whether that be in their home or a university
- 2:36bookstore. It's simple, but I think it
- 2:38works. So this campaign though, it is
- 2:41obviously very over the top and not seemingly sustainable at
- 2:45all. I know there's a possibility
- 2:47that they could be reusing these vending machines or donating
- 2:51them after or something, but I just think in general, like the
- 2:56time, energy, materials, all of that related to this activation
- 3:02probably greatly outweighs the off chance of them like being
- 3:07able to discard of this sustainably.
- 3:10I do think that this activation proves that you can still have
- 3:13this big viral moment around a cultural milestone without
- 3:18actually having to be there. That's not saying that Poppy
- 3:21didn't have to spend a ton of money on this activation.
- 3:24They definitely did, but probably less than sending all
- 3:27of these influencers to the Super Bowl.
- 3:29So it's kind of cool how they brought the Super Bowl hype, the
- 3:32idea of working with influencers and having this campaign kind of
- 3:36like to their homes instead of having to be at the Super Bowl.
- 3:39All right, the next story that I have for you guys is that Charli
- 3:42XCX has pledged to artists access to healthcare alongside
- 3:46Chapel Roan. On Saturday, Charli XCX joined
- 3:49in Chapel Roan's pledge of $25,000 to up and coming artists
- 3:54who were dropped by their labels to help them access healthcare.
- 3:58Noah Khan also recently announced that he would pledge.
- 4:01She wrote on Instagram stories. Hey Chapel Roan, I'm going to
- 4:04match your 25K to support artists access to healthcare.
- 4:08I saw Noah Khan music say he would do the same and so I
- 4:11thought I'd follow suit. Your speech at the Grammys was
- 4:14inspiring and thoughtful and from a genuine place of care.
- 4:17Happy to help get the ball rolling too.
- 4:19Money where mouth is XX. Noah Khan wrote something very
- 4:22similar. He wrote.
- 4:23Hey Chapel roan, I'm going to match your 25K to support
- 4:26artists access to healthcare. I'm inspired by you, happy to
- 4:29help get the ball rolling. Money where mouth is.
- 4:33So all of this, like I said, comes after Chapel called out
- 4:36record labels in her Grammy's speech for failing to provide a
- 4:39livable wage and health care to emerging artists.
- 4:42Chapel's speech sparked some criticism in the industry,
- 4:46especially by a former ANR executive, Jeff Rabon.
- 4:50He wrote an op-ed for The Hollywood Reporter, where he
- 4:53called her. Chapel.
- 4:54Groan said she was wildly misinformed and in my opinion he
- 5:00was just like incredibly condescending to her throughout
- 5:03the whole article. Chapel responded to his article
- 5:07writing at Jeff Ribbon. Want to match ME25K to donate to
- 5:11struggling dropped artists? My publicist is at Biz 3
- 5:15publicity. Let's talk.
- 5:17Mr. Ribbon, I love how in the article you said put your money
- 5:20where your mouth is genius. Let's link and build together
- 5:24and see if you can do the same. Halsey also defended Chapel
- 5:30against Ribon's op-ed. She took to Instagram Stories to
- 5:33call out The Hollywood Reporter for running the piece.
- 5:35In general, she said, I hope you're embarrassed of the
- 5:38absolute personal attack that you've ran and disguised as
- 5:41critical journalism. This is so far beneath the
- 5:44standard you should uphold as a publication.
- 5:46Jeff Ribon's ranting, seething tantrum is loaded with
- 5:49assumptions and accusations that generalize the experience of
- 5:52every artist of that of the most successful.
- 5:55Our industry is comprised of thousands of voices, is the
- 5:58elite at the top of the class are not the example of a
- 6:01monolithic experience for all artists.
- 6:04If you want to profit off of someone else's art, that artist
- 6:07should have the basic living means to feel safe enough to
- 6:10create that art. Shame on you boot licking
- 6:13behavior. OK so I love this.
- 6:16However, this kind of leads into my next story because
- 6:21unfortunately it feels slightly hypocritical of Chapel because
- 6:26her stylist, Genesis Web, has responded to accusations that
- 6:31she was requesting free labor from artists for Chapel's looks.
- 6:36Off the back of Chapel's Grammy speech about paying artists a
- 6:39livable wage, nail technician Holly Munez called out Chapel's
- 6:42team for requesting a free nail set in exchange for tagging and
- 6:46credit two days before her tour. So Holly wrote on Instagram.
- 6:50I find it ironic that Chapel Roan called for livable wages
- 6:54for artists at the Grammys but didn't want to pay for multiple
- 6:57nail sets and giving only two days notice to create them.
- 7:00That exposure would be payment. Strange.
- 7:03Moral of the story, pay your artist their worth regardless.
- 7:06Free nails are never free. We spend hours and hours on our
- 7:09craft and exposure pays 0 bills. We deserve to be paid too,
- 7:13that's for sure. As a nail girly myself, you guys
- 7:16know I always have fun nail designs.
- 7:17I go to a private nail artist and the time and care and money
- 7:22and energy that goes into that, they deserve to get paid.
- 7:27So Holly shared both screenshots and a screen recording of her
- 7:30e-mail inbox showing the communication had come from
- 7:34Genesis team. So Genesis has now responded to
- 7:37this situation. She reposted a tile that she had
- 7:42posted during like AQ and A at some point saying like this is a
- 7:46good time to repost this or whatever.
- 7:48Basically someone asked her for advice on getting into the
- 7:50industry and she said work for free.
- 7:54If you think that you are too good to work for free then you
- 7:56will never realize what this is actually about about about.
- 8:01I was willing to live in my car, I didn't care.
- 8:03And then she followed it up saying hi everyone welcome to
- 8:06the industry. Are you new here?
- 8:08Seems so in this field people work harder than what they get
- 8:12paid for because they believe in something.
- 8:14Just because someone seems famous doesn't mean they have
- 8:17ample amount of money to spend. You all would be floored if you
- 8:20knew how much budget I had last year for projects.
- 8:23If you don't work in the industry and don't understand
- 8:26how it works then you probably shouldn't be speaking on
- 8:28anything because you're uninformed.
- 8:31You guys, it is so ironic that this Jeff man called Chapel
- 8:35misinformed for calling out asking for artists to be paid
- 8:39well or like a livable wage, not even necessarily well.
- 8:43And then someone on her direct team is calling this nail artist
- 8:47who was being asked to work for free by Chapel's team
- 8:50uninformed. You definitely shouldn't be
- 8:52harassing people on my team who by the way, were interning at
- 8:55the time, meaning working that's right for free.
- 8:58I'm sorry you missed your opportunity because you didn't
- 9:00see the vision that other artists who worked with us did.
- 9:04Enjoy your 5 seconds of feelings.
- 9:07OK this response I cannot get around.
- 9:12I cannot get around. First of all, this is surely not
- 9:15the first time that they have asked for Contra and someone has
- 9:17said no. I understand that Holly brought
- 9:19it public, but she brought it public because of the hypocrisy
- 9:24of Chapel speech. And I do want to say I
- 9:27understand that Chapel fully might have no idea that her team
- 9:32is asking for Contra like this. I mean, honestly, I don't even
- 9:34know if you call this Contra because it's not like they said,
- 9:37oh, we promise that. Let me, I guess they said
- 9:39they'll tag, but like they didn't promise like any press.
- 9:42They said like we expect press, you know.
- 9:44So I guess tagging and credit is like the Contra like what they
- 9:49were going to offer. But yes, she brought this
- 9:50publicly because she felt like it was ironic and hypocritical
- 9:53that Chapel made this big speech, this big thing, you
- 9:56know? And she's like, what the hell?
- 9:58I can't get around this response regardless if Chapel knew or not
- 10:02because I don't understand being OK being in an industry that is
- 10:09adjacent to entertainment, like owning a media brand.
- 10:13Having worked in media prior to owning Centennial, I understand
- 10:16the budgets are much smaller than a lot of you guys would
- 10:19probably expect. I understand having to be
- 10:22scrappy, having to be creative and how you make things come to
- 10:25life and sometimes that does require asking for Contra deals
- 10:30and things like that. However, I also just think one
- 10:33of the best parts of like making it in an industry and I would
- 10:37not consider myself having like made it in, you know,
- 10:41independent media, whatever, but it like I'm in a bit of a
- 10:44position of power much more than I was prior to Centennial world.
- 10:48I can't imagine like having more power and influence in an
- 10:52industry and being like but I want it to stay exactly how it
- 10:57has always been, which is shit for everyone at the bottom
- 11:01because I had to pay my dues like this.
- 11:03Everyone forever should have to pay dues like this.
- 11:07Progress should never be made. Isn't that the point of like
- 11:10time? Moving on is that we want
- 11:13progress, you know? Don't you want to leave in
- 11:17industry better than how you entered it?
- 11:21I don't understand that mentality at all.
- 11:24Like for me, we are absolutely working within very small
- 11:28budgets. Like we are just getting by here
- 11:31at Centennial World. And there's tons of stuff that I
- 11:34wish I could do for my team, for my business.
- 11:37Like there's ways that I wish we could function more ethically,
- 11:40but like we just can't afford to right now.
- 11:44But that doesn't mean that we will always function like this
- 11:47or that we don't have bigger plans, that once we get bigger,
- 11:50we have more funding, all of that kind of stuff, that we will
- 11:53change some of these things. But there are still very small
- 11:56things you can do here and there to make it so that you are
- 12:00making a little bit of progress in your industry.
- 12:03Like for example, one of the things that I always ensure
- 12:07happens, however, like one of the small things that I can do
- 12:10is my team gets a pay rise every single year, regardless of a
- 12:14promotion, regardless of a title change.
- 12:17They don't have to like, you know, put together some like
- 12:19performance review and pitch it to me.
- 12:22They're going to get a pay rise because even though I know
- 12:25growing up our parents were like, you should get a pay rise
- 12:27every year for inflation. Who gets that?
- 12:30I don't know. I don't think I know anybody
- 12:32that gets a pay rise every year just for inflation, but I
- 12:36strongly believe that that is like something a very small
- 12:39thing that is well, it's not it's not small, but you know, it
- 12:43is something that's in my control as a business owner.
- 12:46And that is something that I want to do to help make the
- 12:49industry more ethical that to help make media and to show
- 12:52people like to show these like media conglomerates.
- 12:55There's only like fucking three in all of Australia and they
- 12:58have like all of the budgets and they get all the advertising
- 13:01dollars. And I want to show that you can
- 13:04do it better. Like you can do it more
- 13:05ethically and working for independent media is better and
- 13:09you will get treated better. And you know, I want that to
- 13:13encourage brands to spend with us instead of always putting
- 13:16their budgets with like 9 or whatever, all the big guys.
- 13:18Like, I just, I think that there are ways that you can influence
- 13:23the industry on like this smaller level while you're still
- 13:26working towards the bigger things, you know?
- 13:28And I think it's a crazy mentality to have that like, oh,
- 13:33because I had to work for free and live in my car.
- 13:35And that's what I have known most stylists have had to do of
- 13:38my generation. Like, you know, I wanted to
- 13:41always be like that for people. It's giving that boomer
- 13:45mentality of like, I don't believe in getting rid of or
- 13:49like excusing student debt because like, I had to pay my
- 13:52student debt. OK, Well, when you were trying
- 13:53to survive in your 20s and 30s after university, after racking
- 13:58up that debt, like the cost of living was significantly lower.
- 14:02Houses were like, what was it like 4 times your income instead
- 14:06of 10 times or whatever? Right.
- 14:07It's like, don't you want progress?
- 14:10I I don't understand. Like in my media job before a
- 14:13Centennial, I was making like just above minimum wage in my
- 14:17last role and I was in my like, mid to late 20s.
- 14:20And you know, like, that is not an experience that I want my
- 14:24staff to have. Like, I don't want my staff to
- 14:26be like, I cannot believe that I have gone through this many
- 14:30years of my career. You know, I got my degree in
- 14:34journalism or whatever and I'm 28 years old just struggling to
- 14:40get by. Like, I would never want my team
- 14:43to feel like that. I don't understand why you don't
- 14:46want to be like the example of what we want the industry to be.
- 14:50And I also think the last thing I'll say about this response is
- 14:54even being able to work for free by living in your car and couch
- 14:59surfing and not requiring a salary.
- 15:02That is a privilege in and of itself and that keeps Hollywood
- 15:07and styling in this entire industry, the creative industry.
- 15:10It keeps it elitist. That keeps it exclusive.
- 15:13It keeps it elitist. It means that only a very small
- 15:16percentage of creatives can actually pursue that.
- 15:20I cannot get around this response.
- 15:23It is so short sighted. OK.
- 15:28And the last word that I have for you guys is that Emilia de
- 15:31Muldenberg is reportedly dating Adam Faze.
- 15:35So chicken shop dates Amelia de Muldenberg is reportedly dating
- 15:40Adam Faze, according to an exclusive by the Daily Mail,
- 15:44Adam is a former film and television producer who now runs
- 15:47a content studio focused on social media, and he became
- 15:50publicly known. You guys might remember his name
- 15:53because he started dating Olivia Rodrigo in 2021.
- 15:57They split in 2022 and there is speculation that her single
- 16:01vampire is about him, though sources who are apparently
- 16:05sources, quote UN quote, who are apparently close to Olivia have
- 16:08denied this. I really hope that we see more
- 16:13and more of Amelia's like influencer life.
- 16:16I mean, I understand wanting to keep your private life, you
- 16:20know, private and sacred. And I understand that her role
- 16:23in the public eye doesn't really have anything to do with her
- 16:25personal life, but like, I just love her and I want to know more
- 16:28about her. I want to develop a parasocial
- 16:31relationship with Emilia de Muldenberg.
- 16:34All right, guys, that's it for today.
- 16:36Thank you so much for listening. Please rate, review and
- 16:39subscribe. Please recommend us to a friend
- 16:42or on Reddit or whatever Facebook groups, I don't know,
- 16:45whatever you guys use, I love you guys and I will talk to you
- 16:48tomorrow. Bye.
