Transcript
- 0:13Speaker 1: Yeah, a gang.
- 0:13Speaker 2: I'm Brave from Dear Seattle. Our new album Toys coming
- 0:17Speaker 2: out January seventeen. It's the best record we've ever done.
- 0:20Speaker 2: Go grab it, listen to it.
- 0:22Speaker 1: It's sick.
- 0:25Speaker 3: Better wrap that maybe don't even need to talk about it.
- 0:27Speaker 1: Yeah, it's to be done.
- 0:31Speaker 4: But you do release your third album, Toy this Friday,
- 0:33Speaker 4: January seventeenth. So how you feel and you see me
- 0:36Speaker 4: in boisterous spirits? Yeah?
- 0:38Speaker 1: Good, it's so nice.
- 0:39Speaker 2: We've just done a couple of interviews before this, and
- 0:40Speaker 2: it's like it's so nice just getting to chat about
- 0:43Speaker 2: the album and like kind of let everyone in on
- 0:46Speaker 2: the process of what we've been doing for the last
- 0:48Speaker 2: you know, two years or so.
- 0:50Speaker 1: So yeah, I'm super excited.
- 0:52Speaker 2: All the lead up's been great, the energy is good,
- 0:54Speaker 2: the sentiment at the show has been awesome.
- 0:56Speaker 1: I just yeah, I couldn't be more stoked.
- 0:59Speaker 4: You raise a good point there, write like some of
- 1:00Speaker 4: the fans sit back and look and they go they
- 1:02Speaker 4: haven't done anything about you and a half years what
- 1:04Speaker 4: they've been sitting on their ass And it's like, you
- 1:06Speaker 4: got no idea what goes into this?
- 1:08Speaker 3: Brother?
- 1:08Speaker 2: Yeah, fully, it's a process and like not only is
- 1:12Speaker 2: it like a process like writing the songs themselves, and
- 1:15Speaker 2: you know, going through the process of writing as many
- 1:17Speaker 2: songs as you can and then picking the best. But
- 1:20Speaker 2: like you have to live in between, you know, like
- 1:23Speaker 2: you've got to experience things to then write about them,
- 1:26Speaker 2: you know what I mean. So, like I don't understand
- 1:28Speaker 2: the people who just like you know, like King gives
- 1:30Speaker 2: it in the lizard with it just like chucking out
- 1:32Speaker 2: four albums every year.
- 1:33Speaker 1: It's like what do you write about? It's for breakfast
- 1:37Speaker 1: that morning or something.
- 1:39Speaker 3: They got to eat Big Back Catalog.
- 1:41Speaker 1: Yeah, Yeahully, you bring up.
- 1:44Speaker 4: A good point there, mate, Like you guys do write
- 1:46Speaker 4: a lot of music compared to what goes on the
- 1:48Speaker 4: actual album. So what's the process of elimination? Like is
- 1:51Speaker 4: it diplomatic or is it like I'm winning that argument? Yeah?
- 1:55Speaker 2: Yeah, Honestly, in the past it's been a bit of
- 1:57Speaker 2: like a you know, if someone feels really strongly about it,
- 2:00Speaker 2: then like it'll push it through. But for this record specifically,
- 2:04Speaker 2: like we really set out with the intent of making
- 2:06Speaker 2: it be as strong as possible from start to finish,
- 2:09Speaker 2: and you know, making the singles as good as the
- 2:12Speaker 2: album tracks because we just wanted it to be like
- 2:14Speaker 2: on this other level beyond our last records, and as
- 2:18Speaker 2: a result, we were like, Okay, if there's anyone in
- 2:21Speaker 2: the band who's like not particularly feeling one of the songs,
- 2:24Speaker 2: it doesn't go on like it has to be everyone
- 2:27Speaker 2: across the board being like, yep, that's a jam unanimous vote.
- 2:32Speaker 2: So it was actually quite diplomatic in that sense.
- 2:34Speaker 1: It was really good.
- 2:35Speaker 4: You have any of those jury duty moments where is
- 2:37Speaker 4: that one person dig in the heels and then you
- 2:39Speaker 4: had to talk.
- 2:40Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 2:41Speaker 2: Classically, it was always me kind of being like, there
- 2:44Speaker 2: should be these other like four slow songs that are
- 2:47Speaker 2: really soft and kind of do nothing, and everyone's like,
- 2:51Speaker 2: I don't.
- 2:51Speaker 1: Know, man, I'm like, nah, but just like listen to
- 2:53Speaker 1: it well closely, like I don't know, but yeah, to come.
- 3:00Speaker 4: It tells me more about Toy from a musical point
- 3:02Speaker 4: of view and what you're actually going for with it musically.
- 3:06Speaker 2: Honestly, we were trying to just make it something that
- 3:09Speaker 2: like we felt really strongly would resonate both live and
- 3:13Speaker 2: on record, because I think on the last record, yeah,
- 3:16Speaker 2: we didn't really get to experience like the live side
- 3:18Speaker 2: of it too much, and it was.
- 3:20Speaker 1: A COVID record all that kind of stuff, so it
- 3:22Speaker 1: was a bit limited in that sense.
- 3:23Speaker 2: And so coming into this one, especially knowing we had
- 3:26Speaker 2: so much touring last year and even more this year
- 3:30Speaker 2: to come, it's like, you know, what's stuff that's going
- 3:34Speaker 2: to be fun to play live and it's going to
- 3:35Speaker 2: be energetic and you know, gonna have big choruses, but
- 3:38Speaker 2: also these big sentiments that people can really resonate with
- 3:41Speaker 2: and have an emotional response to, rather than just you know,
- 3:45Speaker 2: washing and getting in the pit kind of thing. So yeah,
- 3:49Speaker 2: it was that was kind of what we were focusing on,
- 3:51Speaker 2: just trying to have that balance between the two.
- 3:54Speaker 4: Actually, it's interesting you mentioned like the songs of the
- 3:56Speaker 4: sentiments and stuff like these days it's a disposable society.
- 4:00Speaker 4: People's attentions and let's so do you find the people
- 4:03Speaker 4: are actually still getting into the lyrics and in join
- 4:06Speaker 4: the message, I guess, rather than just getting into the music.
- 4:10Speaker 2: Yeah, I think there gets to be this divide where
- 4:13Speaker 2: it's like, that's where I find like your core fans
- 4:15Speaker 2: are like you can really tell the ones who are like,
- 4:18Speaker 2: you know, say the ones come into like these album
- 4:21Speaker 2: launch parties because they're like limited capacity, small intimate venues.
- 4:25Speaker 2: They're the kinds of people that, like, I love chatting
- 4:27Speaker 2: to and like they tell me about their story of
- 4:29Speaker 2: how they relate to a song and why it connects
- 4:32Speaker 2: with them so much and all that kind of thing.
- 4:34Speaker 2: So there's like your core fan base, and then I
- 4:35Speaker 2: think there's like your more peripheral kind of fan base,
- 4:38Speaker 2: which you know might be the people who are like
- 4:41Speaker 2: they found you through a playlist on Spotify or something
- 4:43Speaker 2: and then just like chucked you in their like everyday.
- 4:45Speaker 1: Playlist or whatever.
- 4:46Speaker 2: They listen to you and they're like, yeah, I like
- 4:48Speaker 2: this band, but maybe don't go to the extent of
- 4:51Speaker 2: like diving deeper into meetings behind songs and things like that,
- 4:55Speaker 2: which is so fair, Like I do that with so
- 4:58Speaker 2: many artists as well, Like it's it'd be ridiculously taxing
- 5:01Speaker 2: to a deep dive on every artist you listen to.
- 5:04Speaker 2: So yeah, I think it's just it's it's the core
- 5:07Speaker 2: fans that really, you know, dive into that, and that's
- 5:10Speaker 2: what I like writing for. Like I like writing for
- 5:12Speaker 2: those people, so they've they've got that extra tidbit to
- 5:16Speaker 2: kind of dig into.
- 5:17Speaker 3: Nice.
- 5:18Speaker 4: Now you've released these singles are counting ours Evergreen, nothing
- 5:21Speaker 4: stopped me. Now stargazz Is say, well you want in
- 5:23Speaker 4: ninety K. So they're good sonic representation, what expresses. There's
- 5:28Speaker 4: a few songs on there.
- 5:29Speaker 1: Yeah, yeah, there's a lot of songs.
- 5:31Speaker 2: I think, yeah, there's Oh it's kind of interesting because
- 5:36Speaker 2: like the record has a lot of different flavors to it,
- 5:40Speaker 2: and in my mind, like every song kind of has
- 5:42Speaker 2: its own personality and it it sits in like its
- 5:46Speaker 2: own kind of like sonic realm. And I think you
- 5:47Speaker 2: can kind of hear that across all of the different singles,
- 5:50Speaker 2: Like they all have a very similar feeling to them
- 5:53Speaker 2: in terms of like what makes it feel like Dear Seattle,
- 5:57Speaker 2: But I think they all kind of touch on different
- 6:00Speaker 2: sonic palettes and like flavors in a different way. And
- 6:04Speaker 2: so yeah, I think the rest of the record kind
- 6:05Speaker 2: of follows that trajectory of like it has the thing
- 6:08Speaker 2: at its core which is so true to us, but
- 6:10Speaker 2: then we just like explored with the production or explored
- 6:13Speaker 2: with the sonics of you know, how stylistically we wrote
- 6:18Speaker 2: the guitars or what like, since we overlaid on top
- 6:20Speaker 2: of choruses and things like that just to give it
- 6:23Speaker 2: that different flavor.
- 6:25Speaker 3: I was recking my brains with the song.
- 6:27Speaker 4: I DC trying to come up with something witty to
- 6:29Speaker 4: say what You've caught it, But it's not as simple
- 6:32Speaker 4: I don't care, is it?
- 6:33Speaker 3: You guys are more in depth in that I.
- 6:36Speaker 1: It is, literally I don't care.
- 6:40Speaker 2: It's funny you say that, though, because because that song,
- 6:43Speaker 2: like the point behind that song is like not overthinking
- 6:47Speaker 2: shit and not trying to like I think, like I
- 6:49Speaker 2: realized in a lot of things that I do, like
- 6:52Speaker 2: in life as well as artistically, I try and like
- 6:56Speaker 2: imbue all of this meaning and everything has to have
- 6:58Speaker 2: like a bigger picture to it, a bigger story, and
- 7:01Speaker 2: I kind of like deprive myself of like doing shit
- 7:04Speaker 2: just for fun and just for the sake of like
- 7:06Speaker 2: enjoying yourself and nothing else. And like that song was
- 7:10Speaker 2: really an experiment in that being, Like you know, all
- 7:14Speaker 2: of us when we were writing that song were sitting
- 7:15Speaker 2: in the studio just like wetting ourselves, laughing, coming up
- 7:18Speaker 2: with the lyrics and just like it's like it's so crazy,
- 7:22Speaker 2: like you would never really expect to do a song
- 7:24Speaker 2: and have the lyrics that it does, but it's a
- 7:26Speaker 2: part of us like we we're like dumb fun boys
- 7:29Speaker 2: who like having a giggle, so like, why not have
- 7:32Speaker 2: that as a part of the record as well.
- 7:35Speaker 4: I deliberately didn't listen to the song because I didn't
- 7:37Speaker 4: want to know what it what it meant till I
- 7:38Speaker 4: spoke to you and ah.
- 7:39Speaker 1: Yeah, yeah mate, thank you, yeah, enjoy it. Yea, I
- 7:44Speaker 1: understand no.
- 7:45Speaker 4: Song on the album called Toy, which means the title
- 7:47Speaker 4: is gonna have a greater significance.
- 7:49Speaker 2: Yeah, I think, funnily enough, Like again, it was one
- 7:54Speaker 2: that we just like kind of said and it felt right,
- 7:56Speaker 2: just because I think so much of what this record
- 7:59Speaker 2: is about is like this transitional period of moving from
- 8:03Speaker 2: almost like adolescents into like adulthood and working out you know,
- 8:07Speaker 2: all of your mistakes and your pitfalls and things along
- 8:09Speaker 2: the way and the lessons that you learn. And I
- 8:14Speaker 2: think it kind of felt like Toy had this nice
- 8:16Speaker 2: like nostalgia to it. Like you think about toys and
- 8:19Speaker 2: like everyone has that one toy that they think of
- 8:21Speaker 2: as soon as you say it, like this one thing
- 8:24Speaker 2: that you grew up with that you know is maybe
- 8:25Speaker 2: a Teddy Bear or a you know, Transformer or whatever,
- 8:28Speaker 2: but like the one that has this special sentiment to it,
- 8:31Speaker 2: and I think, to me, like all of the stories
- 8:35Speaker 2: in this record, they have a lot of nostalgia to
- 8:38Speaker 2: it and a lot of self reflection, and it's kind
- 8:40Speaker 2: of looking at a period in my life and now
- 8:44Speaker 2: being older and reflecting on it how I feel about
- 8:46Speaker 2: it and how I feel about how I acted in
- 8:47Speaker 2: those moments, and so I think, yeah, like I think
- 8:51Speaker 2: a toy was just so nicely representative of that throwback
- 8:55Speaker 2: and that nostalgia and the like reflection on the past
- 8:59Speaker 2: and where you come from.
- 9:00Speaker 3: And that's why the covers in black and white.
- 9:02Speaker 1: It is absolutely exactly exactly, but I.
- 9:05Speaker 3: Couldn't stop looking at it.
- 9:06Speaker 1: Oh that's awesome.
- 9:07Speaker 2: Yeah, Funnily enough, like that photo is it's not staged
- 9:11Speaker 2: in the slightest is literally our old drummer, Josh we
- 9:15Speaker 2: I think we went to go see Rolling Blackouts Coastal
- 9:18Speaker 2: Fever at the vic In Maracle and once we.
- 9:22Speaker 1: Left it was just there like that.
- 9:25Speaker 2: How it is set is exactly how the phone booth was,
- 9:28Speaker 2: And it's a phone. It's sorry, it's a photo taken
- 9:31Speaker 2: on an iPhone and I just like took it into
- 9:35Speaker 2: light room and like edited it and touched it up
- 9:37Speaker 2: and obviously made it look like an album cover, but yeah,
- 9:41Speaker 2: it just felt you know, it had such a nice
- 9:43Speaker 2: connection again to that concept of like this is actually
- 9:45Speaker 2: a memory of a night out from my past, like
- 9:48Speaker 2: we're all there together at the time when it was taken,
- 9:51Speaker 2: Like it just felt so right and it's still captivating
- 9:54Speaker 2: to look at.
- 9:54Speaker 3: So how drunk did that Teddy Ba get by the
- 9:56Speaker 3: end of the night.
- 9:59Speaker 2: Oh yeah, we I think we like tied it to
- 10:01Speaker 2: a hills hoist and started swinging it around.
- 10:05Speaker 4: Next album pictures. I was halfway through a tour that
- 10:11Speaker 4: started in Hobart back on December twelfth. Mate, you got
- 10:13Speaker 4: Hambridge this Thursday, then Wollongong City Newcastle over consecutive night
- 10:17Speaker 4: so have until I've been going and people can getting
- 10:20Speaker 4: into the new music.
- 10:21Speaker 2: Yeah, honestly, it's it's been hectic what the response has been.
- 10:24Speaker 2: And it's been so nice doing these shows because like
- 10:27Speaker 2: we've been playing a whole bunch of the record and
- 10:30Speaker 2: it's so nice to see how people are reacting and
- 10:34Speaker 2: like I distinctly remember I think it was the day
- 10:37Speaker 2: of maybe Hobart or I can't remember which show, but
- 10:41Speaker 2: counting hours had come out that day or maybe like
- 10:44Speaker 2: within twenty four hours before the show, and there was
- 10:47Speaker 2: people at the show singing every word to.
- 10:49Speaker 1: It, and I was just like, are you kidding me?
- 10:52Speaker 1: Like you can't ask for more, You can't ask for
- 10:55Speaker 1: more than that.
- 10:55Speaker 2: And you know, I think for us as a band,
- 10:59Speaker 2: like as you start to and you move on to
- 11:01Speaker 2: bigger venues and stuff, you don't really get to have
- 11:04Speaker 2: that like pub feeling where like you hang out after
- 11:08Speaker 2: the show and you get to like chat to people
- 11:10Speaker 2: and hear you know, why they're connecting with the music
- 11:14Speaker 2: and what songs they're loving, and even just chatting about
- 11:17Speaker 2: music in general, like what other bands they love. And
- 11:20Speaker 2: I think that to us is like it's really special
- 11:22Speaker 2: and it makes us feel really connected to the community
- 11:25Speaker 2: of people that we've been building because we really have
- 11:28Speaker 2: a big focus on that like community.
- 11:30Speaker 1: We think it's it's.
- 11:31Speaker 2: Really important to make sure that music is a place
- 11:34Speaker 2: where people feel like connected to other people. And so yeah,
- 11:38Speaker 2: it's the perfect way. Like if we're not out there
- 11:40Speaker 2: chatting with people, then like what's the point.
- 11:43Speaker 4: M's right, brother, Now, before I let you go, We've
- 11:45Speaker 4: got a new segment I've introduced called Photo bombs. So basically,
- 11:48Speaker 4: I've trolled your social media before we spoke that I
- 11:52Speaker 4: want you to tell me a bit more about Yes,
- 11:55Speaker 4: first of one, like no, I only you album's pretty good, mate,
- 11:58Speaker 4: but I've heard that the vinyls of the bit better.
- 12:03Speaker 3: Look at it.
- 12:04Speaker 1: That's look, that's the feeling that it gives.
- 12:06Speaker 2: Once you listen to it, you'll know that's that's it.
- 12:10Speaker 1: Summed up perfectly. Picture says that thousand words ignore.
- 12:13Speaker 3: The moving on.
- 12:16Speaker 4: From this here, mate, Like it looks like a great
- 12:18Speaker 4: venue and how cool is it playing places like that
- 12:21Speaker 4: where the people can sweat on you.
- 12:23Speaker 2: Yeah, that was actually the crazy story behind that one.
- 12:26Speaker 2: So that was our show in Paris on our most
- 12:27Speaker 2: recent Europe tour, and I think like a week before
- 12:31Speaker 2: we were supposed to play, we were supposed to play
- 12:33Speaker 2: a different venue, and they, like the promoter got fired
- 12:36Speaker 2: and the venue decided to cancel all of the shows
- 12:39Speaker 2: that the promoter had been putting on, and so they
- 12:42Speaker 2: were just like, yeah, we'll try and find you another venue,
- 12:46Speaker 2: but we can't guarantee it's going to be good, And
- 12:48Speaker 2: so they ended up finding us this and it's like
- 12:51Speaker 2: it's a basement of like a Cafe slash Bar, and
- 12:56Speaker 2: you walk down these stairs and it is tiny, like
- 12:58Speaker 2: that's a really wide angle lens. They're taking a photo,
- 13:01Speaker 2: but they said it was seventy capacity, and with you know,
- 13:06Speaker 2: fifty people in there, it was like sardines, absolute sardines.
- 13:09Speaker 2: And there's people who like couldn't get in the door.
- 13:11Speaker 2: They were sticking their head through the little doorway on
- 13:14Speaker 2: the left there, and it was sick, Like it felt
- 13:17Speaker 2: so unique and like, I don't know, I kept thinking
- 13:21Speaker 2: at the time, I'm not equating us to this band,
- 13:24Speaker 2: but like you know when people say, like, oh, I
- 13:27Speaker 2: remember seeing Nirvana in like this friend's garage in whatever year,
- 13:32Speaker 2: and like it felt like one of those shows where
- 13:34Speaker 2: it's like if you were there, it felt special.
- 13:36Speaker 4: So it was sick and if there's any judice in
- 13:38Speaker 4: the music world, you'd be then those pricks Navanna one
- 13:41Speaker 4: day and I.
- 13:42Speaker 1: Like you, let's do that.
- 13:45Speaker 3: You don't be an absolutely pleasure.
- 13:46Speaker 4: The album Toy is out this Friday, January seventeen, and
- 13:49Speaker 4: a really good quality slam of music.
- 13:51Speaker 3: Make Congratulations, Thank you so much.
- 14:16Speaker 5: Goot soon Last Seed and you're trying to run with
- 14:19Speaker 5: the snow skin on your knees looking up at the
- 14:22Speaker 5: sun sinking days like these come second and none tending
- 14:27Speaker 5: hours a weeks.
- 14:29Speaker 6: Then it's sober and done. You seevent seen no one
- 14:34Speaker 6: cares pade the streets with all your friends. You swear
- 14:39Speaker 6: any three and all for riends, spend all nice.
- 14:44Speaker 7: Scream and that dumb cap that fucks up bringing in
- 14:48Speaker 7: the summer steal a jet scape, playing on your brother.
- 14:54Speaker 6: That fucks up.
- 14:55Speaker 8: Doing what you wanna second cap. Yet by the very
- 15:00Speaker 8: rush up that late me.
- 15:18Speaker 5: You've been fucking up Teddy.
- 15:22Speaker 9: Patty streets signs in the sunshine because the world's gone crazy,
- 15:30Speaker 9: you said, and seen no chess parade the streets with
- 15:36Speaker 9: all your friends. You swear any three and all forspend
- 15:42Speaker 9: all night screen and back up get fucked up, bringing
- 15:47Speaker 9: in the summer steal a jet.
- 15:50Speaker 7: Skin pointing on your brother that fucks up doing a
- 15:55Speaker 7: Douana second cap. Yet by the berry Russia that fights
- 16:01Speaker 7: up bragging in the song id as down tocing dolsona
- 16:07Speaker 7: that fights up doing what do you want to ride?
- 16:11Speaker 8: A cars run up with the banna that that Doc's
- 16:42Speaker 3: Robot about like
