- 0:00How to make the extraordinary out of the ordinary.
- 0:04There's a story behind that. This is your daily message from
- 0:08Chad #1151 to upgrade your mental game today by telling
- 0:12yourself a better story. Because the most important story
- 0:15you hear is the story you tell yourself.
- 0:18This message is dedicated to Teresa Smith on her birthday.
- 0:22Happy birthday, mom, You get a free copy of my book, The Most
- 0:25Powerful Story in the World, by going to from chad.gumroad.com.
- 0:29The transcript of this message and hundreds of others are
- 0:32always available at www.fromchad.com.
- 0:35Here's your upgrade. Your work may be ordinary, but
- 0:38upgraded thinking knows ordinary is a stage, not a sentence.
- 0:41Here's your story. Dave Vaughn walked the same
- 0:45streets of Pemberton, NJ with the same mailbag for 43 years.
- 0:50Same town, same route, the most ordinary job you can imagine.
- 0:54But he decided the job would be his stage.
- 0:57He started whistling so the neighborhood dogs would get used
- 0:59to him. And then he just kept whistling
- 1:01because he liked it. Soon the whole town knew he was
- 1:03coming by the tune in the air, and he became the whistling
- 1:06mailman. He learned every child's name on
- 1:09his route and every birthday, and on your birthday you'd get a
- 1:12little ring folded out of a dollar bill.
- 1:15Each month he showed up in a rotation of costumes, a Pilgrim
- 1:18at Thanksgiving, red, white and blue for the holidays.
- 1:22He grew out his beard every fall so that by December he'd be a
- 1:25real Santa walking mail up your driveway.
- 1:29Nobody told him to do any of this.
- 1:31There was no bonus for it. He wasn't looking for promotion.
- 1:34He took a routine and decided to fill it instead of just get
- 1:38through it. As the adage goes, if you do
- 1:40what everybody else does, you'll get the same results everyone
- 1:43else gets. In 2004, a neighbor nominated
- 1:47him for Citizen of the Year, and when they handed him the plaque,
- 1:50he kept it simple. I just like to make others
- 1:52smile. The extraordinary wasn't in his
- 1:55title mail carrier. It wasn't part of his salary.
- 1:59It was in the small, almost playful decision he made every
- 2:02single morning to add something extra.
- 2:05A little cheer, recognition, a little theater.
- 2:09Until his retirement in 2012 after 43 years.
- 2:13See, extraordinary is just ordinary with a little extra on
- 2:18it. Most people treat a job as
- 2:20something to survive. Dave treated it as his container
- 2:24that he filled with his own personality.
- 2:26You don't need a new title to do that.
- 2:28You don't need a stage. Anyone would recognize you have
- 2:31a route. Everyone does the same desk, the
- 2:34same commute, the same people you pass every day, the same
- 2:37place as you shop. Orison Sweat Martin said.
- 2:41Don't wait for the extraordinary opportunities.
- 2:43Seize common occasions and make them great.
- 2:47The question is whether you'll just walk it or whether you'll
- 2:51whistle. The better story to tell
- 2:53yourself is I will add a little extra.
- 2:57Tell me a story of ordinary made extraordinary to from
- 3:00chadsmith@gmail.com. Send someone a text and tell
- 3:03them do a little extra.
