Ep 49 | Keeping the American Dream Alive: Faith, Freedom, and Responsibility · Amazing Life Breakthrough

• 0:05
SPEAKER_00: There are a lot of numbers, anniversaries, years of accomplishments, but what about 250 years?
• 0:12
SPEAKER_00: That is not just a number, that is a testimony.
• 0:16
SPEAKER_00: This week, as America celebrates 250 years since the signing of the Declaration of Independence, we are not only looking back at history, we are looking at a gift that has endured through wars, hardship, division, rebuilding, correction, sacrifice, and generation after generation of people who believed freedom was worth preserving.
• 0:37
SPEAKER_00: America 250 describes this milestone as a time to reflect on our past, honor Americans' contributions, and look toward the future we want to create for the next generation.
• 0:52
SPEAKER_00: And that is exactly where I want to go today.
• 0:55
SPEAKER_00: Not just celebration, reflection, not just fireworks, responsibility.
• 1:00
SPEAKER_00: Not just God bless America, although I believe that deeply, but also God help us steward America well.
• 1:07
SPEAKER_00: Welcome to Amazing Life Breakthrough.
• 1:09
SPEAKER_00: I'm Steve Klein, and today we are continuing our Independence Day week reflection by talking about faith, freedom, responsibility, and what it really means to keep the American dream alive.
• 1:21
SPEAKER_00: If you listen on Tuesday, you may remember I talked about my dad putting out the American flag on major holidays, especially American national holidays.
• 1:30
SPEAKER_00: I talked about how he cared about buying things made in America.
• 1:34
SPEAKER_00: I talked about how on my dad's side, my dad and uncles represented the Army, Navy, and Air Force.
• 1:40
SPEAKER_00: And on my mom's side, my uncles served in the Marines and Coast Guard, and so I had all branches of military represented to me as a youth growing up in America.
• 1:50
SPEAKER_00: That is the kind of patriotism I grew up in.
• 1:52
SPEAKER_00: It wasn't loud or forced, not political theater, just a steady love of country, a respect for the flag, for service, a respect for what America represented.
• 2:03
SPEAKER_00: And in grade school, we said the Pledge of Allegiance every day, hand over heart, facing the flag.
• 2:09
  SPEAKER_00: And it meant something.
• 2:10
SPEAKER_00: It meant we belonged to a nation.
• 2:12
  SPEAKER_00: It meant liberty mattered.
• 2:14
  SPEAKER_00: It meant unity mattered.
• 2:15
SPEAKER_00: It meant we were not just individuals floating around doing whatever we wanted.
• 2:20
SPEAKER_00: We were part of something larger.
• 2:22
SPEAKER_00: And I think America needs that kind of memory right now.
• 2:25
SPEAKER_00: Not nostalgia for nostalgia's sake, but remembrance.
• 2:29
SPEAKER_00: Because a nation that forgets what made it strong can start losing those strengths without even realizing it.
• 2:35
SPEAKER_00: Now let me say this up front.
• 2:37
  SPEAKER_00: America is not perfect.
• 2:38
  SPEAKER_00: It never has been.
• 2:40
SPEAKER_00: No nation is, but the breakthrough of America is that our founding principles gave us a way to keep correcting, keep debating, keep improving, and keep returning to the standard of liberty and justice.
• 2:54
SPEAKER_00: That is one of the reasons our founding documents matter so much.
• 2:58
SPEAKER_00: The Declaration of Independence says that all men are created equal and that they are endowed by their creator with certain unalienable rights, including life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness.
• 3:11
SPEAKER_00: It also says that governments derive their just powers from the consent of the governed.
• 3:15
  SPEAKER_00: That idea is enormous.
• 3:17
SPEAKER_00: Rights are not presented as gifts from government.
• 3:20
SPEAKER_00: They are recognized as gifts from God.
• 3:23
  SPEAKER_00: And that's a big bold statement.
• 3:25
SPEAKER_00: Because if rights come only from government, then government can decide to take them away.
• 3:30
SPEAKER_00: But if rights are endowed by our creator, then government's proper role is not to invent those rights, but to recognize and protect them.
• 3:38
SPEAKER_00: That is a major difference.
• 3:40
SPEAKER_00: And I believe that is one of the most important messages we can pass on during America's 250th anniversary.
• 3:46
SPEAKER_00: Freedom is not just a political arrangement.
• 3:49
SPEAKER_00: Freedom is a moral responsibility under God.
• 3:53
SPEAKER_00: Now, when I say that, I know some people may hear it differently depending on their background.
• 3:58
SPEAKER_00: America has always had religious diversity.
• 4:00
SPEAKER_00: We have Christians of many denominations.
• 4:02
SPEAKER_00: So we have Catholics, Protestants, people who are Jewish, and people of other faiths, as well as people who may not consider themselves religious.
• 4:10
SPEAKER_00: But historically, faith in God, biblical principles, and a belief in moral accountability helped shape the soil of this country.
• 4:19
SPEAKER_00: And we should not be afraid to say that.
• 4:21
SPEAKER_00: We should not allow history to be rewritten in a way that pretends faith had nothing to do with America's foundation.
• 4:28
SPEAKER_00: Faith mattered and moral conviction mattered.
• 4:31
SPEAKER_00: The idea that there is a higher authority than the state mattered.
• 4:36
SPEAKER_00: And still matters, because if there is no higher authority than government, then government becomes the highest power.
• 4:42
SPEAKER_00: And history has shown us that when government becomes the highest power, freedom is in danger.
• 4:48
SPEAKER_00: That is why socialism is not the answer.
• 4:50
SPEAKER_00: Communism is not the answer either.
• 4:52
SPEAKER_00: The answer is not to hand more and more freedom over to a system and hope it cares for us better than liberty can.
• 4:58
SPEAKER_00: The freedoms we enjoy must endure from now and into the future if we want to keep the American dream alive.
• 5:05
SPEAKER_00: And capitalism, at its best, has helped create opportunity, innovation, generosity, ownership, and upward mobility.
• 5:14
SPEAKER_00: But capitalism also requires character.
• 5:17
  SPEAKER_00: It requires honesty.
• 5:18
  SPEAKER_00: It requires stewardship.
• 5:20
SPEAKER_00: It requires people who do not use freedom as an excuse for greed, corruption, exploitation, or carelessness.
• 5:27
  SPEAKER_00: Freedom without virtue decays.
• 5:29
SPEAKER_00: Capitalism without conscience becomes destructive.
• 5:32
SPEAKER_00: Government without limits becomes dangerous.
• 5:35
SPEAKER_00: Then faith without love becomes hollow.
• 5:38
SPEAKER_00: So the real question is not simply what system do we have.
• 5:42
SPEAKER_00: The deeper question is what kind of people are we becoming inside that system?
• 5:47
SPEAKER_00: That is where America rises or falls, not only in Washington, D.C., not only in courtrooms, not only in elections, but inside homes, inside businesses and schools and churches and in neighborhoods, local communities, families.
• 6:02
SPEAKER_00: The American dream has always depended on more than laws.
• 6:06
SPEAKER_00: It depends on people who believe in work, faith, family, honesty, service, sacrifice, and responsibility.
• 6:13
SPEAKER_00: Now our founders understood something important about human nature.
• 6:17
SPEAKER_00: They understood that power needed limits.
• 6:20
SPEAKER_00: That is why the Constitution begins we the people and establishes a framework meant to secure the blessings of liberty for ourselves and our posterity.
• 6:29
SPEAKER_00: It places legislative power in Congress, executive power in the president, and judicial power in the Supreme Court and lower courts that Congress may establish.
• 6:38
SPEAKER_00: Legislative, executive, judicial, three branches, checks and balances, not because people are always bad, but because people are human.
• 6:46
SPEAKER_00: And human beings, when given unchecked power, can drift toward control.
• 6:52
SPEAKER_00: That was wisdom and foresight.
• 6:54
SPEAKER_00: That was a structure designed to help freedom endure.
• 6:58
SPEAKER_00: And then the Bill of Rights added explicit protections, including freedom of religion, freedom of speech, freedom of the press, the right to peaceably assemble, and the right to petition the government.
• 7:10
SPEAKER_00: Those freedoms are not decorations, they are guardrails.
• 7:14
SPEAKER_00: They protect the citizen from the state.
• 7:16
SPEAKER_00: They protect conscience, they protect truth-telling, they protect worship, they protect dissent, they protect the ability to say something is wrong and to work toward making it right.
• 7:26
SPEAKER_00: And yes, that means freedom can get messy.
• 7:29
SPEAKER_00: Freedom of speech means people may say things we disagree with.
• 7:32
SPEAKER_00: Freedom of the press means media outlets may get things wrong, show bias, or fail to tell the whole story.
• 7:40
SPEAKER_00: Freedom of religion means people may worship differently.
• 7:43
SPEAKER_00: Freedom to petition means citizens can challenge leaders, judges, policies, and institutions.
• 7:49
SPEAKER_00: But the answer to messy freedom is not less freedom.
• 7:52
SPEAKER_00: The answer is more truth, more courage, more accountability, and more citizens willing to think clearly and speak wisely.
• 8:01
SPEAKER_00: That is how problems get exposed and how corruption gets challenged.
• 8:05
SPEAKER_00: That is how bad ideas get debated and how injustice can be confronted.
• 8:09
SPEAKER_00: It's not perfect and it's not instant and it's not always easy.
• 8:13
SPEAKER_00: But it's usually done openly for all American citizens to see, and that is a gift.
• 8:19
SPEAKER_00: We have the ability in this country to speak up, organize, vote, contact representatives, attend school board meetings, talk to local leaders, write, publish, build businesses, worship God, raise families, and pursue a life of meaning.
• 8:33
SPEAKER_00: That is not normal in every place in the world, and we should not take it for granted.
• 8:39
SPEAKER_00: Now I want to touch lightly on something that many families feel deeply right now.
• 8:44
SPEAKER_00: The American dream can feel harder than it used to.
• 8:48
SPEAKER_00: For a lot of people, the idea that one income could support a household feels almost impossible now.
• 8:54
SPEAKER_00: Housing feels expensive, groceries feel expensive, insurance feels expensive, families are stretched.
• 9:02
SPEAKER_00: Young people wonder how they will buy a home.
• 9:04
SPEAKER_00: Parents wonder how to help their kids launch into adulthood.
• 9:07
SPEAKER_00: And when people feel that pressure, it can create fear, it can create frustration, it can make people wonder whether the American dream is still alive.
• 9:17
SPEAKER_00: I believe it is, but I also believe we have work to do.
• 9:20
SPEAKER_00: We need to ask hard questions about stewardship.
• 9:23
  SPEAKER_00: Are we protecting families?
• 9:24
SPEAKER_00: Are we encouraging work and ownership?
• 9:27
SPEAKER_00: Are we building homes and communities in wise ways?
• 9:30
SPEAKER_00: Are we caring for the land we have been given?
• 9:32
SPEAKER_00: Are we allowing corporations, institutions, or government systems to treat people like numbers instead of human beings?
• 9:39
SPEAKER_00: Are we rewarding short-term profit while ignoring long-term consequences?
• 9:44
  SPEAKER_00: Those are fair questions.
• 9:46
SPEAKER_00: And asking them does not mean we hate America.
• 9:49
SPEAKER_00: It means we love America enough to want her to be healthy, because love of country is not blind.
• 9:56
  SPEAKER_00: Love sees clearly.
• 9:57
SPEAKER_00: Love honors what is good and corrects what is wrong.
• 10:01
SPEAKER_00: Love protects what is precious, and that is the tone I believe we need in this next chapter in our American history, not despair and certainly not constant outrage, but awake, engaged, grateful, courageous citizenship.
• 10:15
  SPEAKER_00: Because here's the truth.
• 10:17
SPEAKER_00: Every generation receives an inheritance and decides what to do with it.
• 10:22
SPEAKER_00: Some generations squander it, some generations strengthen it, some generations forget the cost, some generations remember, and as America turns 250, we have a choice.
• 10:32
SPEAKER_00: Will we pass down freedom as something sacred or treat it as something casual?
• 10:37
SPEAKER_00: Will we teach our children that liberty comes with a responsibility?
• 10:41
SPEAKER_00: Or will we let screens, noise, cynicism, and division teach them instead?
• 10:46
SPEAKER_00: Will we tell them the truth about America, both the greatness and the struggles, or will we let others rewrite the story into something unrecognizable?
• 10:55
SPEAKER_00: I believe we have to tell the truth.
• 10:57
SPEAKER_00: America was founded on principles of freedom.
• 11:00
SPEAKER_00: America was shaped by belief in God.
• 11:03
SPEAKER_00: America has been defended by sacrifice.
• 11:06
SPEAKER_00: America has corrected many wrongs through the very freedoms built into its system.
• 11:11
SPEAKER_00: America has provided opportunity unlike almost any nation in history, and America still needs people who will steward that opportunity and steward it well.
• 11:22
SPEAKER_00: That means faith matters, as well as family, work, and truth all matter.
• 11:27
SPEAKER_00: Local community is important as well, including having the courage to speak out when things aren't right.
• 11:32
SPEAKER_00: And here's the other big thing.
• 11:34
SPEAKER_00: It matters that we see clearly and not have our vision clouded by something that isn't true, that looks to be true.
• 11:43
SPEAKER_00: In other words, we need to be wise and think critically.
• 11:47
SPEAKER_00: You may remember my episode a few months ago about critical thinking.
• 11:50
SPEAKER_00: Well, this is one of those things that we definitely need to think critically about, because if you aren't careful, you will blindly believe whatever media source is feeding you.
• 12:01
SPEAKER_00: And it may not be truthful because freedom does not preserve itself.
• 12:05
SPEAKER_00: A flag does not raise itself, a family legacy does not carry forward by accident.
• 12:11
SPEAKER_00: And a nation's moral foundation does not remain strong unless people are willing to protect it, teach it, and live it out.
• 12:18
SPEAKER_00: That responsibility falls to all of us parents and grandparents, teachers and pastors, business owners, workers, veterans, and everyday citizens who still believe this country is worth loving, correcting, and carrying forward.
• 12:31
SPEAKER_00: It falls to you, it falls to me, ordinary people living with extraordinary responsibility.
• 12:37
SPEAKER_00: Now I want to bring this back to something simple.
• 12:40
SPEAKER_00: My dad putting out the flag.
• 12:42
SPEAKER_00: That image stays with me because he probably did not realize he was teaching me something big.
• 12:48
SPEAKER_00: He was just doing what he believed was right.
• 12:50
SPEAKER_00: But that is how values are often passed down, not always through lectures, but rather through habits and through visible signs, even through what a child sees repeated, a flag on a porch, a prayer before a meal, a hand over the heart, a thank you to a veteran, a family choosing to buy American when they can, a parent explaining why freedom matters, a grandparent telling a story about service, a business owner choosing integrity over shortcuts, a citizen speaking up respectfully at a local meeting, a family gathering around the table saying grace before meals, and talking about what is true.
• 13:28
SPEAKER_00: These are not small things, they are the threads that hold a country together, and I think that is part of the breakthrough.
• 13:36
SPEAKER_00: We often think the future of America is only decided by powerful people far away.
• 13:41
SPEAKER_00: But the future of America is also decided by what we normalize at home.
• 13:45
SPEAKER_00: It is shaped by the values we teach, the things we honor, the behavior we tolerate, the wrongs we correct, the prayers we pray, and the legacy we choose to pass on.
• 13:56
SPEAKER_00: If we want America to endure, then we must become people who are worthy of liberty.
• 14:01
  SPEAKER_00: That doesn't require perfection.
• 14:03
SPEAKER_00: It requires humility, gratitude, truthfulness, hard work, faith, and the understanding that freedom is not permission to do whatever we want.
• 14:14
SPEAKER_00: Freedom is the opportunity to do what is right.
• 14:17
SPEAKER_00: That is how the American dream stays alive.
• 14:19
SPEAKER_00: It stays alive when we are honest about our problems without losing gratitude for our blessings.
• 14:25
SPEAKER_00: It stays alive when we protect freedom instead of trading it away for false promises of security.
• 14:32
SPEAKER_00: It stays alive when we remember God, respect faith, tell the truth about history, and have the courage to rebuild what is broken instead of simply tearing things down.
• 14:41
SPEAKER_00: But by returning to the foundations that still work, faith in God, freedom of conscience, rule of law, limited government, personal responsibility, free enterprise with moral stewardship, strong families, local community, truth, courage, gratitude, and hope.
• 14:58
SPEAKER_00: That is the America I believe is worth celebrating.
• 15:01
SPEAKER_00: That is the America I believe is worth correcting when needed.
• 15:05
SPEAKER_00: That is the America I believe is worth protecting, and that is the America I believe can still bless future generations.
• 15:13
SPEAKER_00: So here's your listener challenge for this Independence Day week.
• 15:17
SPEAKER_00: Take one step as a citizen and one step as a family member.
• 15:20
SPEAKER_00: As a citizen, read the Declaration of Independence or the First Amendment.
• 15:25
  SPEAKER_00: Not just quickly, slowly.
• 15:27
  SPEAKER_00: Think about the words.
• 15:29
SPEAKER_00: Think about what they cost.
• 15:31
SPEAKER_00: Think about what they protect.
• 15:33
SPEAKER_00: As a family member, tell a child, grandchild, niece, nephew, or younger person why freedom matters to you.
• 15:41
SPEAKER_00: Tell them a family story.
• 15:42
SPEAKER_00: Tell them about someone who served.
• 15:44
SPEAKER_00: Tell them why you put out the flag.
• 15:46
SPEAKER_00: Tell them what America has meant to your family.
• 15:49
SPEAKER_00: Tell them that rights come from our Creator, and that freedom must be protected with responsibility.
• 15:55
SPEAKER_00: Because if we do not pass these things on, we should not be surprised when they fade.
• 15:59
SPEAKER_00: But if we do pass them on with humility and conviction, then there is still great hope.
• 16:05
SPEAKER_00: America is 250 years old.
• 16:08
SPEAKER_00: Still standing, still imperfect, still blessed, still free, still worth loving, still worth praying for, and still worth building and worth carrying forward.
• 16:20
SPEAKER_00: If this episode encouraged you, share it with someone who loves this country and wants to see the American dream kept alive for the next generation.
