- 1:24Speaker 1: the Favorites, the podcast from the Volume Podcast Network. G
- 1:27Speaker 1: I'm Chad Nolman, Chief Content Officer of the Action Network.
- 1:32Speaker 1: This is a massive, massive show today. Simon Hunter, my bff,
- 1:38Speaker 1: my companion, my co host, Professional Better. It's rare we
- 1:43Speaker 1: get actual real life champions on the podcast. It's true,
- 1:49Speaker 1: especially with my ego. We usually don't have on other
- 1:52Speaker 1: famous people because I can't handle it. My group friend
- 1:55Speaker 1: Shawn Zarrillo, who gave me Cash Warber at one to
- 1:59Speaker 1: lead the m being harm runs like it's like bet
- 2:02Speaker 1: to win nine k On Schwarber feeling pretty good. So Sean, God,
- 2:06Speaker 1: Am I happy to see you. Thank you for everything,
- 2:08Speaker 1: and hold on, Simon, Can I at least introduce all
- 2:11Speaker 1: of our guests first, Seanzarrillo, who is a longtime writer
- 2:15Speaker 1: at the Action Network covering baseball, which I'm in his referencing.
- 2:19Speaker 1: Also m M A, also everything else to do with combat,
- 2:23Speaker 1: also horse racing. Sean is on today because our guest
- 2:27Speaker 1: is former UFC champion Chris Wideman, who's calling in from
- 2:33Speaker 1: South Carolina, even though he is a Long Islander at heart,
- 2:37Speaker 1: born and raised. Former New York State Collegiate wrestling champion
- 2:42Speaker 1: of two time Junior College All American, two time n
- 2:46Speaker 1: C double A D one All American at Hofstra professional fighter,
- 2:51Speaker 1: most famous for being a four time UFC middleweight champion.
- 2:56Speaker 1: Pains me to say the pride of Nassau County, Long Island,
- 3:00Speaker 1: Chris Wideman, Wow, I'm in press forget Bruce Buffer. I
- 3:05Speaker 1: think Chad Millman is where it's at pretty good, right,
- 3:08Speaker 1: you need to get in the authagon started introducing guys.
- 3:10Speaker 1: He isn't I have a long history of of of
- 3:16Speaker 1: shining up UFC champions, as I am the author of
- 3:20Speaker 1: Chuckle Adell's autobiography. True. Oh wow, I actually think I
- 3:24Speaker 1: may have read that book, and I haven't read that
- 3:26Speaker 1: many books in my life. So that's for those people
- 3:28Speaker 1: who had the over under on me mentioning my book
- 3:31Speaker 1: before I actually asked Chris the question at like two
- 3:35Speaker 1: and a half minutes. Uh, and you had the under
- 3:37Speaker 1: Matt Mitchell, congratulations, Chad Milman wrote a book. Oh my god,
- 3:43Speaker 1: can we get some action on that there's always action
- 3:46Speaker 1: on something. I will say that Chris, welcome to the show.
- 3:49Speaker 1: Right off the bat, the UFC used to give new
- 3:53Speaker 1: champions a new belt every time they defended it, but
- 3:57Speaker 1: switched to adding a ruby on the same belt after
- 4:02Speaker 1: each title defense. Do you have four belts for one
- 4:06Speaker 1: belt with four rubies? So interesting story. Um So, when
- 4:12Speaker 1: I was champion at that time, unless you had a
- 4:14Speaker 1: written into your contract, you only get the belt when
- 4:17Speaker 1: you win the when you win your championship for the
- 4:19Speaker 1: first time, and then every defense afterwards they give you
- 4:22Speaker 1: a fake belt. They give you a belt in the octagon,
- 4:24Speaker 1: and then they take it back after afterwards. So I
- 4:28Speaker 1: defended my belt three times, so I won the belt,
- 4:30Speaker 1: so I had my original belt and then my last
- 4:33Speaker 1: title of defense. The third time I was backstage, I
- 4:36Speaker 1: was taking pitches with the belt that they were letting
- 4:38Speaker 1: me borrow, basically, and then I was gonna have to
- 4:39Speaker 1: give it back, and I was like, you know what,
- 4:41Speaker 1: I just I feel like I'm the man. I deserve
- 4:43Speaker 1: more belts. I heard that at that time it was
- 4:45Speaker 1: very rare, but I think came Valaska has got to
- 4:48Speaker 1: keep every belt that he won, and I'm like, you
- 4:49Speaker 1: know what, I'm keeping this thing. So next thing I know,
- 4:52Speaker 1: the UFC sent some you know, pr girl backstage and
- 4:55Speaker 1: it was asking me for the belt. I'm like, no,
- 4:56Speaker 1: Dana said I could keep this one, and she's like
- 4:59Speaker 1: he did. I'm like, I'm like And then next thing
- 5:01Speaker 1: I know, I was gone. I had the belt and
- 5:03Speaker 1: then like Danta like sent me like some laughing emojis
- 5:05Speaker 1: or something, and uh, he let me keep the belt.
- 5:08Speaker 1: So I have two belts. I should have four belts,
- 5:11Speaker 1: four belts, but I have too. Well in theory, in reality,
- 5:14Speaker 1: you should have one belt. But you stole the belt,
- 5:17Speaker 1: and Data said, Data laughed and was like that's the
- 5:20Speaker 1: kind of attitude I love. There's no way I'm taking
- 5:22Speaker 1: the belt back if if you went by the contract,
- 5:25Speaker 1: I only got one. But at the end of the day,
- 5:28Speaker 1: I'm pretty sure everybody now gets to have a new
- 5:30Speaker 1: belt every time. So uh yeah, and I don't have
- 5:33Speaker 1: the gems. As you can see, one of them is
- 5:35Speaker 1: back here, that is the traditional one, and that's enough.
- 5:39Speaker 1: The other one is up there. Um, those belts don't
- 5:42Speaker 1: have the gems, don't have like your you know that
- 5:44Speaker 1: you know the country that you're fighting for and you know,
- 5:47Speaker 1: cool little things that you want to throw in there,
- 5:49Speaker 1: like a high school you know, you like you get
- 5:50Speaker 1: a high school ring, you get to put your football number,
- 5:52Speaker 1: and you know, you know you you're a Gemini. If
- 5:54Speaker 1: you're a Gemini, you have a certain you know, color,
- 5:56Speaker 1: burth stone. You get all those options. Now, it's kind
- 5:59Speaker 1: of weird the older Bells who was just stay handed,
- 6:02Speaker 1: you it and that was it. When you get to
- 6:05Speaker 1: become a UFC champion, this is a serious question. I
- 6:08Speaker 1: don't mean it in a joking way. How much more
- 6:10Speaker 1: confidence does that give you as a human being. You know,
- 6:13Speaker 1: you were wrestling and you had a pretty meteoric rise
- 6:16Speaker 1: to becoming a champion in the UFC. You're obviously a
- 6:20Speaker 1: good athlete, obviously confident in your abilities. But when the name,
- 6:26Speaker 1: the word champion is prescribe to you, how much does
- 6:31Speaker 1: it change your confidence level. It's pretty nice to know,
- 6:35Speaker 1: without any argument, that you are the world champion, that
- 6:38Speaker 1: you are the toughest guy in the world at that
- 6:41Speaker 1: way class of course I thought I was, you know,
- 6:43Speaker 1: pound for pound, at the toughest. It just feels nice
- 6:46Speaker 1: to have, you know, other people recognizing what you already knew.
- 6:50Speaker 1: My big thing is like, you know, I want one fight.
- 6:52Speaker 1: So when I go down to you know, the car
- 6:53Speaker 1: dealership and I'm trying to get something fixed on my car,
- 6:56Speaker 1: the mechanic doesn't give me any attitude, Like I have
- 6:59Speaker 1: some respect because beat your ass. But at the end
- 7:01Speaker 1: of the day, if they don't know who you are,
- 7:03Speaker 1: I still get treated like crap. I hate it. I'm
- 7:05Speaker 1: not scary enough looking, like there's some UFC champs out
- 7:08Speaker 1: there that have the ears. I have this kid that
- 7:10Speaker 1: I'm training now. His name is Tom Lane. He's one
- 7:12Speaker 1: in O pro. He's got a second professional fight coming up. Listen,
- 7:15Speaker 1: I love him, but I throw him around like a
- 7:17Speaker 1: rag doll. But he's got these big, scary looking ears,
- 7:19Speaker 1: and he gets just everyone's scared of him. And I
- 7:21Speaker 1: hate that. Everyone thinks I'm just like this random business guy.
- 7:24Speaker 1: That's kind of the look I think I give off.
- 7:27Speaker 1: And uh, I wish I looked tougher. You could shave
- 7:30Speaker 1: your head and tattoo your skull like without and then
- 7:33Speaker 1: you'll always be recognizable and nobody's gonna sunk with you. Yeah,
- 7:37Speaker 1: I might have to go that way. Your problem is
- 7:39Speaker 1: you like a really good look at norm McDonald. I
- 7:41Speaker 1: don't know how you're gonna get away from him. Man,
- 7:43Speaker 1: Oh my gosh, I appreciate that. Man. Thanks for giving
- 7:46Speaker 1: me the one up on Norm McDonald. By the way,
- 7:48Speaker 1: he's a decent looking guy, but he killed. What I
- 7:53Speaker 1: know is that you mentioned sort of fighting with guys,
- 7:55Speaker 1: and like you grew up as a wrestler and that's
- 7:58Speaker 1: your expertise, you know, technically, sound grappling, all that kind
- 8:03Speaker 1: of stuff. When UFC first started outside of the Brazilians,
- 8:08Speaker 1: this was a sport that was a place where people
- 8:11Speaker 1: who just like to throw down could find a way
- 8:14Speaker 1: to make a little money. You know, Chuck Lidell, he
- 8:16Speaker 1: just liked to fight. Like he was a good restaurant.
- 8:18Speaker 1: He was a good football player, but mostly he just
- 8:21Speaker 1: liked to get in fights. It's like that was his
- 8:23Speaker 1: athletic enjoyment. He's doing in bars and alletes. Right, But
- 8:27Speaker 1: did you like fighting when you started doing this or
- 8:30Speaker 1: was it just a way to maintain your ability to
- 8:33Speaker 1: perform as a wrestler. And this was the next thing
- 8:35Speaker 1: that was the opportunity. I'm gonna say it was a
- 8:38Speaker 1: mess for both those things. I was training for the
- 8:40Speaker 1: two thousand eight Olympics. I got injured before the trials,
- 8:43Speaker 1: and then you know, if if you're going to stay
- 8:45Speaker 1: on and try the two twelve Olympics, you try the
- 8:47Speaker 1: world teams. In between, I was making twelve tho dollars
- 8:50Speaker 1: as a coach at um at House University and training,
- 8:53Speaker 1: and it wasn't the best living or another option is
- 8:58Speaker 1: you know this m m A was going on and
- 9:00Speaker 1: he sold these wrestlers doing really good with it. And
- 9:03Speaker 1: at the same time, I'm from a small town called
- 9:04Speaker 1: Baldwin and New York and a lot of people that
- 9:06Speaker 1: grew up with me. You know. I had a tougher
- 9:09Speaker 1: older brother who made me fight his friends all the time.
- 9:11Speaker 1: And the people that grew up around me, they were
- 9:13Speaker 1: always they always knew I was tough, and they always knew,
- 9:16Speaker 1: you know, I wasn't scared to fight. Like if someone
- 9:19Speaker 1: was gonna, you know, try to pick on me, I
- 9:20Speaker 1: was gonna fight back and you're gonna have to kill me.
- 9:23Speaker 1: And um when I started having, you know, creating these
- 9:26Speaker 1: accoldes for myself with wrestling and people started watching m
- 9:29Speaker 1: m A, They're like, you know, Chris, you need to
- 9:31Speaker 1: do this. This is like perfect for you. The way
- 9:32Speaker 1: you grew up and plus you know, you're wrestling, you
- 9:35Speaker 1: crush it. And so when you have enough people telling
- 9:37Speaker 1: you that and and you know, it kind of helps
- 9:40Speaker 1: give some positive reinforcement on me talking to my wife
- 9:43Speaker 1: and letting her know, hey, I'm gonna become a pro fighter. Now,
- 9:47Speaker 1: that's always the conversation. It's like, how can I convince
- 9:50Speaker 1: the person I'm married to that I'm going to take
- 9:53Speaker 1: a shot on this thing that you know is a
- 9:56Speaker 1: little bit of a gamble, Oh my god, a huge gamble.
- 9:58Speaker 1: Especially at that time they were was really nobody making real,
- 10:01Speaker 1: real money, you know, and if there were, it was
- 10:03Speaker 1: very very select few people in the whole world. But
- 10:07Speaker 1: you know, I really believe in myself. I had a
- 10:09Speaker 1: coach very long ago. I walked into the gym, I
- 10:11Speaker 1: you know, after a bunch of workouts with him. He
- 10:13Speaker 1: just had so much faith in me, and that helped me,
- 10:16Speaker 1: you know, really believe in myself and thought I had
- 10:18Speaker 1: a chance at this. And again, of course it's about
- 10:20Speaker 1: going home and explaining this to your wife and having her,
- 10:23Speaker 1: you know, be on the same page. Which that was tough,
- 10:25Speaker 1: you know, because you know, for at least two years
- 10:29Speaker 1: you're not making any money, you know, so you're gonna
- 10:31Speaker 1: go from making you know, I was making twelve thou
- 10:33Speaker 1: dollars a year at Hashtra to making no money and
- 10:36Speaker 1: you know, really no guarantee of anything. Meanwhile, she's you know,
- 10:41Speaker 1: getting her accounting degree and getting a job at price
- 10:44Speaker 1: Warehouse Cooper and I'm going to like Christmas parties and
- 10:47Speaker 1: I'm being introduced as her husband. And I'm a professional
- 10:50Speaker 1: fighter with like one fight, uh, with not much of
- 10:52Speaker 1: a future. People forget. It wasn't on ESPN. It was
- 10:55Speaker 1: on Fuel TV when I first started the UFC. Before that,
- 10:58Speaker 1: I mean, I guess Spike started Spike. It was a
- 11:01Speaker 1: very small sport, it was. It didn't cross over. It
- 11:04Speaker 1: was illegal in my home state. You know. I had
- 11:06Speaker 1: to fight in New Jersey on my fights to come up,
- 11:10Speaker 1: and uh, it was not looked at as a thing
- 11:13Speaker 1: that most you know, people would want to do. She
- 11:15Speaker 1: eventually supported me. I remember she made a deal with me, like,
- 11:17Speaker 1: if you ever come home with a black eye, that's
- 11:19Speaker 1: it and we're done. So I made sure I didn't
- 11:21Speaker 1: come home with a black guy. She actually remember my
- 11:23Speaker 1: first professional fight. I wanted everyone, all my family and
- 11:26Speaker 1: everybody that knew me to think it's just like wrestling.
- 11:29Speaker 1: I didn't want to like hurt the guy or bloody
- 11:31Speaker 1: them up. I wanted them to just think that this
- 11:33Speaker 1: is just a sport. It's not crazy, it's not brutal,
- 11:36Speaker 1: you know, so I did. I just took the guy
- 11:38Speaker 1: down really fast, and I and I arm mocked him
- 11:40Speaker 1: with a camera and messed up his should a little bit,
- 11:42Speaker 1: but it was very clean. Eventually my family realized this
- 11:46Speaker 1: is a tough sport. Your wife is like, I'm married
- 11:49Speaker 1: the best looking version of Norm McDonald Baldwin Long Island.
- 11:53Speaker 1: If you come home messed up, I am going to
- 11:55Speaker 1: be so pissed. Oh my god, I look like Norm McDonald,
- 11:59Speaker 1: like crazy right out. I just buzzed my face down,
- 12:01Speaker 1: I think, and I'm a little puffy in the cheeks.
- 12:04Speaker 1: I don't know. I don't know what's going on to lighting,
- 12:06Speaker 1: but I agree with you. I do look like normandonald
- 12:08Speaker 1: right now. This is weird. I can't get over this.
- 12:10Speaker 1: So obviously I'm at the biggest UFC. I'll be up
- 12:12Speaker 1: front with you. I gamble on it. But you know
- 12:14Speaker 1: what out is, It's just like it's usually you're out drinking.
- 12:17Speaker 1: I was out when I was in Vegas. So it
- 12:18Speaker 1: is crazy to think that your first UFC fight was
- 12:22Speaker 1: in and then you became a superstar in July. Obviously
- 12:26Speaker 1: you were a dog of plus two hundred against Silva,
- 12:29Speaker 1: which is crazy to think. Again, this is all coming
- 12:31Speaker 1: back to me. I had a copious amount of money
- 12:35Speaker 1: on Silva at this time for this fight against you.
- 12:38Speaker 1: Didn't stop it, dude. I loved him like the Spider.
- 12:42Speaker 1: I go way back with him, just because I used
- 12:43Speaker 1: to really into Brazilian jiu jitsu, so I was obsessed
- 12:47Speaker 1: with him the whole thing about it, like the Silent Killer,
- 12:49Speaker 1: his technique, everything about him was cool as shit. Little
- 12:52Speaker 1: I know you're the guy he's talking ship, you're mocking you.
- 12:55Speaker 1: You knock him out in the second round, you get
- 12:58Speaker 1: your own holiday and nasall count. Uh. Your own holiday
- 13:01Speaker 1: is July seventeen, It's about to be the ninth, the anniversary.
- 13:05Speaker 1: What do you have planning? Like, do you have anything
- 13:06Speaker 1: especially doing that day or anything going on? Does the
- 13:09Speaker 1: Action Network need to make this an official holiday? Well,
- 13:12Speaker 1: they definitely do. Chris Wyman Dave is coming up. But
- 13:14Speaker 1: let's let's put back a second here. So you put
- 13:16Speaker 1: money on Anisi silver A guess with Big mon I
- 13:19Speaker 1: was listening to the pro I work with. He was
- 13:21Speaker 1: just like, but you know, it's craz white kid coming in.
- 13:23Speaker 1: You're getting really good short odds of silva. So that
- 13:28Speaker 1: was the closest odds Anes and Silvera had in the
- 13:30Speaker 1: UFC at that point. And what brought the odds down
- 13:34Speaker 1: to be that close for a guy who never lost
- 13:37Speaker 1: in the UFC and never even looked like he had
- 13:38Speaker 1: a chance of losing, was because a lot of the
- 13:41Speaker 1: m m A guys I would train with, Like so
- 13:42Speaker 1: George St. Pierre, who was, you know, one of the
- 13:44Speaker 1: other goats at the time that people really believe in
- 13:47Speaker 1: every word that will come out of his mouth. Him,
- 13:49Speaker 1: along with a lot of other pro fighters that trained
- 13:51Speaker 1: with me, We're like, this is the guy who's beating
- 13:53Speaker 1: in his silva. And then after these interviews came out
- 13:55Speaker 1: and people started realizing, oh, no, Wyman is different because
- 13:58Speaker 1: they see and he had weaknesses with wrestling, and then
- 14:01Speaker 1: with my accolades and jiu jitsu on top of it,
- 14:03Speaker 1: people started putting it together. Just match up wise, it
- 14:05Speaker 1: was gonna be. It was. It was a tough one
- 14:07Speaker 1: for him yourself, Well, I did in some ways because
- 14:11Speaker 1: that was the last fight of my contract. I was
- 14:12Speaker 1: making many four thousand hollars to show twenty four thousand
- 14:15Speaker 1: dollars to win to fight the greatest of all time
- 14:18Speaker 1: in my non professional fight, which is not a lot
- 14:20Speaker 1: of money. But they tried to renegotiate with me right
- 14:23Speaker 1: before that fight, and I said no. I was like, no,
- 14:25Speaker 1: I'm good because I knew after talking a couple of
- 14:27Speaker 1: the guys that had done well and became champions, is
- 14:30Speaker 1: that the way to make real money in the UFC
- 14:33Speaker 1: is to is to become champion. That's how you get
- 14:35Speaker 1: a percentage of pay of views and all that. So
- 14:37Speaker 1: I just bet on myself. So I made show win,
- 14:40Speaker 1: and then they paid me a whole lot more to
- 14:42Speaker 1: have me sign a new contract afterwards. So I did
- 14:44Speaker 1: bet on myself, probably more than anybody else. And then
- 14:48Speaker 1: July seventeen, Chris Wyban Day. I just tell everybody you know,
- 14:51Speaker 1: drink responsibly, uh and UH have a good time. And
- 14:55Speaker 1: it's like another fourth of July. This baseball season turned
- 14:59Speaker 1: kays into hash and big hits into big wins. With

- 16:33Speaker 1: We haven't asked you how you're feeling, how your leg
- 16:37Speaker 1: is progressing. How's your rehab going? He closes a slight
- 16:41Speaker 1: plus one oh five betting under dog right belod right below,
- 16:49Speaker 1: and in immediately spe stops like, oh god, so it's going. Well,
- 16:54Speaker 1: it's not as good as I would have liked it
- 16:56Speaker 1: to be. You know, I thought, you know, one surgery
- 16:58Speaker 1: and I would be good. It's been multiple surgeries now.
- 17:01Speaker 1: And just to put it out there so you, ESPN
- 17:04Speaker 1: is doing this big documentary on me. It's in sixty
- 17:06Speaker 1: It's the same people that did Alex Smith's documentary. Uh,
- 17:09Speaker 1: and they have the rights to my story. So all
- 17:13Speaker 1: the ups and downs, everything I've been through with this
- 17:15Speaker 1: layoff is it's it's been pretty extent and there's been
- 17:19Speaker 1: a lot of not a crap. But they have the
- 17:21Speaker 1: rights to tell a story. I trust them to do
- 17:23Speaker 1: a good job with it, so I can't say too much.
- 17:25Speaker 1: All I could say is I am coming back. I'm
- 17:27Speaker 1: gonna come back. This is the last chapter in my
- 17:30Speaker 1: book as M M. A fighter for sure is my
- 17:32Speaker 1: comeback and what I'm gonna do with it, and I'm
- 17:34Speaker 1: super excited about it. You know, the opportunity to inspire
- 17:37Speaker 1: you know, millions of people, especially they after what they've
- 17:40Speaker 1: seen me go through, from the ups to the downs
- 17:43Speaker 1: to what's going on with my leg, you know, breaking that,
- 17:46Speaker 1: you know, the compound for actually having the bones go
- 17:48Speaker 1: through the skin and everything like that on World by Television.
- 17:51Speaker 1: So for me to come back and come back in
- 17:53Speaker 1: a big way, I think it's gonna be super inspiring
- 17:55Speaker 1: and a cool story. Excited about it. I can't tell
- 17:58Speaker 1: you guys much. You guys gonna have to watch the
- 17:59Speaker 1: document entreaty, which there is probably gonna come out about
- 18:01Speaker 1: two or three weeks before I fight. I plan on
- 18:04Speaker 1: fighting at the towards the end of the year this year,
- 18:06Speaker 1: so well, listen, you're in good hands. The East sixty
- 18:09Speaker 1: folks having done many many projects with them, are amazing,
- 18:14Speaker 1: so we'll all look forward to it. I like that
- 18:16Speaker 1: Simon brought up you were a plus two hundred dog
- 18:20Speaker 1: against Anderson Silva. He bet in, he bet on Silva.
- 18:24Speaker 1: Because m m A and UFC specifically, for as long
- 18:28Speaker 1: as I'm doing betting coverage, which is a long time now,
- 18:30Speaker 1: both at ESPN and here, it was always one of
- 18:33Speaker 1: those things that got a ton of professional action, but
- 18:38Speaker 1: a lot of times it was almost always on the
- 18:40Speaker 1: favorites because the favorites were almost always winning. There just
- 18:44Speaker 1: weren't that many upsets. And so now as sort of
- 18:48Speaker 1: the sport has become more popular, I want to ask
- 18:51Speaker 1: Sillo when you're thinking about mm A betting. Your write
- 18:55Speaker 1: ups are amazing. The way you handicap the cards for
- 18:58Speaker 1: UFC fights. What is it like to handicap the fight
- 19:02Speaker 1: now versus say when Chris was first coming up and
- 19:06Speaker 1: first one is title in two thou well, there's so
- 19:08Speaker 1: many more fights. I mean, you don't just have UFC fights,
- 19:11Speaker 1: you have belts or almost every weekend PFL, l f A.
- 19:14Speaker 1: There's all these organizations that are now having odds available,
- 19:17Speaker 1: and it's widely available where you still almost have to
- 19:20Speaker 1: call your way to find where odds were available just
- 19:23Speaker 1: for the one you have C card a month that
- 19:25Speaker 1: was popping up. And then on top of that, you
- 19:27Speaker 1: have twelve to fifteen fights a card. You could bet
- 19:29Speaker 1: every fighter money line total, like you could for any sport,
- 19:32Speaker 1: but you also could bet props fight to go to
- 19:34Speaker 1: a decision or to end, buy a finish, either fighter
- 19:37Speaker 1: will win by decision, knockout, submission, and then on top
- 19:40Speaker 1: of that to win in specific rounds, to win by
- 19:42Speaker 1: specific method in specific rounds. So there's literally a hundred
- 19:45Speaker 1: two hundred ways to bet on each individual of the
- 19:48Speaker 1: twelve to fifteen fights on every card. Multiply that by
- 19:51Speaker 1: two or three cards across different organizations each weekend. So
- 19:54Speaker 1: for Chris, one thing I really focus on and try
- 19:57Speaker 1: to focus on is particularly with live betting, because at
- 19:59Speaker 1: the you can find a big advantage with live betting
- 20:02Speaker 1: is samina and cardio fighters who typically finished early in
- 20:04Speaker 1: their fights. I'm thinking particularly guy you obviously know, Mora
- 20:08Speaker 1: Dvosh Reilly fought Marlin Mariah's a few months ago. Murrab
- 20:12Speaker 1: going into that fight very obvious cardio advantage. Marlin tends
- 20:15Speaker 1: to gas out after five to seven minutes. He's the
- 20:17Speaker 1: first round finisher. So when I handicap a fight like that,
- 20:21Speaker 1: I'm going into the fight not really is interested in
- 20:23Speaker 1: the Morab side of the money line. If I'm gonna
- 20:25Speaker 1: bet something pre fight, it's probably gonna be the early
- 20:27Speaker 1: first round finisher to win in round one or his
- 20:30Speaker 1: money line pre fight, and then I'm gonna look to
- 20:32Speaker 1: roll that into a live bet on the guy I
- 20:34Speaker 1: think has the cardio advantage after round one could be
- 20:37Speaker 1: a little difficult to handicap cardidio. Obviously you can improve
- 20:40Speaker 1: your cardio over time, but some guys really can't. So
- 20:43Speaker 1: I'm curious, from the inside of a fighter's mind, what
- 20:46Speaker 1: do you think the general public kind of overvalues are
- 20:49Speaker 1: undervalues because it's it's difficult for us to gauge what
- 20:52Speaker 1: a game plan might be, right, whether you as a
- 20:54Speaker 1: wrestler going to look to drag somebody to deep waters
- 20:56Speaker 1: and tire them out, and maybe I want to bet
- 20:58Speaker 1: your round three props because I know you're planning on
- 21:00Speaker 1: tire a guy out late and then on top of that,
- 21:03Speaker 1: you know, knowing how I'm sure you've noticed how scoring
- 21:05Speaker 1: is sort of changed recently, how judges are emphasizing damage
- 21:09Speaker 1: over control. You know, it may not have been as
- 21:11Speaker 1: friendly to you trying to wrestle guys and hold onto
- 21:14Speaker 1: them or just gained top position. For I've never only
- 21:18Speaker 1: just wrestled guys in helped the top position. No, no,
- 21:20Speaker 1: but what I'm saying, I'm a finisher kid, you know,
- 21:25Speaker 1: just you know how you might go about handicapping a
- 21:27Speaker 1: fight differently as you sort of see the way judges,
- 21:30Speaker 1: you know, approach it differently too. You know, the the
- 21:32Speaker 1: cliche saying is you can never leave it in the
- 21:34Speaker 1: hands of the judges, which is obviously easier said than done.
- 21:37Speaker 1: But that is obviously always the goal what the coaches
- 21:39Speaker 1: want to tell their students. But things have changed a
- 21:42Speaker 1: lot over the years. Like betting on fights was way
- 21:44Speaker 1: easier back when I was, you know, up and coming.
- 21:47Speaker 1: There was way less people that knew what they were
- 21:48Speaker 1: talking about. Now we've got guys like you who really
- 21:51Speaker 1: know what they're doing or just educated on the sport.
- 21:54Speaker 1: They understand. You know, you're we're watching PFL, you're watching
- 21:57Speaker 1: l f A. These are things that really weren't hapending,
- 22:00Speaker 1: you know, a few years back. It's just crazy how
- 22:03Speaker 1: us going mainstream, you know, coming over to ESPN just
- 22:06Speaker 1: one of the things that it has done for it.
- 22:08Speaker 1: I'm with you. Cardio is is king. You watch someone
- 22:11Speaker 1: fight like ma Rob Morob, it's not just that his
- 22:14Speaker 1: cardio is outstanding, it's his mentality. So when you see
- 22:17Speaker 1: a guy who's known for their cardio, would they usually
- 22:20Speaker 1: also bring a different mental mindset that usually should make
- 22:24Speaker 1: them a favorite. I think having a having a guy
- 22:26Speaker 1: that you know is not gonna get tired is the
- 22:29Speaker 1: worst thing you could know going into a fight. If
- 22:31Speaker 1: you're fighting somebody and you know that no matter what
- 22:34Speaker 1: you do to them, they're gonna still be going, that's
- 22:37Speaker 1: a freaking nightmare with you on that. If you could
- 22:39Speaker 1: find guys who have good cardio, you want to go
- 22:41Speaker 1: with them. The other thing wrestlers. I think wrestlers are
- 22:44Speaker 1: the highest percentage chance of winning, the ability to dictate
- 22:47Speaker 1: where the fight goes. You know, if you're uncomfortable on
- 22:49Speaker 1: the feet, you can dictate it and bring it to
- 22:51Speaker 1: the ground. If you're comfortable on the feet, you can
- 22:52Speaker 1: keep it standing. So I think having that available. Uh.
- 22:56Speaker 1: And then also wrestling gives a mindset just from wrestling
- 22:58Speaker 1: since you're a little kid being screamed that by coaches,
- 23:01Speaker 1: they're not making money off of you. Uh, they're gonna
- 23:04Speaker 1: tell you to get the hell out of the room
- 23:05Speaker 1: if you're not working hard, as opposed to every other
- 23:07Speaker 1: martial art. You know, you go to a CREDI school,
- 23:10Speaker 1: you go to a kickboxing school, you go to Brazilian
- 23:12Speaker 1: jiu jitsu. If you're not working hard, just staying because
- 23:16Speaker 1: you're paying. It's it's a little different than you know,
- 23:19Speaker 1: you go into you know, the high school wrestling room
- 23:21Speaker 1: that the kids are gonna get screamed that they're out,
- 23:24Speaker 1: Just get out of here. You're wasting my time. Obviously
- 23:26Speaker 1: I'm biased, but I just think it's factual. Statistically at
- 23:28Speaker 1: this point, wrestlers win most of the champions of wrestlers,
- 23:31Speaker 1: most of the guys. If you got a you know,
- 23:33Speaker 1: a fight where it's kind of even on the odds,
- 23:36Speaker 1: I would always tilt towards the wrestler, and usually it
- 23:39Speaker 1: means they have meant mentally stronger and probably have better
- 23:41Speaker 1: cardio for the most part, But cardio and wrestling are
- 23:44Speaker 1: the two things that I would probably focus on when betting.
- 23:47Speaker 1: It's easier to look as like a big favorite in
- 23:49Speaker 1: hindsight if you're the superior grappler than it is if
- 23:52Speaker 1: it's just gonna be a straight up striking match on
- 23:53Speaker 1: the feet. You know, the margins in the grappling tend
- 23:56Speaker 1: to be a bit wider than in terms of just
- 23:57Speaker 1: a straight up striking match, because there's a chance, say,
- 24:00Speaker 1: you know, take you down, just hold onto you, you know,
- 24:02Speaker 1: and then there's a chance they take it down and
- 24:04Speaker 1: some mit you so, or they could also knock you out.
- 24:07Speaker 1: There's just more ways to win. It's amazing how what
- 24:10Speaker 1: wrestling does to the cardio. A striker starts getting taken
- 24:13Speaker 1: down all of a sudden, they don't have power anymore,
- 24:14Speaker 1: so there goes that knockout win. So if you had
- 24:16Speaker 1: an under thinking that the you know, the guy was
- 24:18Speaker 1: going to get a knockout and he got taken down
- 24:20Speaker 1: a few times, those live odds are definitely gonna change.
- 24:23Speaker 1: Do you bet a lot of m M a UFC
- 24:25Speaker 1: and the fights that you're watching not as much as
- 24:27Speaker 1: I used to do do. I used to do it way more.
- 24:29Speaker 1: It's a tough game. Man, it's it's really hard to predict,
- 24:33Speaker 1: even if i've inside info, you know. I remember there
- 24:35Speaker 1: was this time I knew one of these guys that
- 24:38Speaker 1: I had trained with just a little bit, he had
- 24:39Speaker 1: a terrible injury. The whole camp. He did nothing. He
- 24:42Speaker 1: did nothing, he was even confident who he was gonna win.
- 24:45Speaker 1: So I'm like, all right, listen, I'm gonna throw some money,
- 24:47Speaker 1: no disrespect him with do some money on this other
- 24:49Speaker 1: guy makes some money and next day, no, the guy
- 24:51Speaker 1: who was injured the whole time goes out there and
- 24:53Speaker 1: gets the first round knockout just you know, throws caution
- 24:55Speaker 1: to the wind, that connects and boom, there goes my money.
- 24:58Speaker 1: So it's just a very tough with the gauge, you know,
- 25:00Speaker 1: even if you have inside infot you have to just
- 25:02Speaker 1: bet consistently. You know, if you're going for just one bet,
- 25:05Speaker 1: it's a big risk. Like it seems like Sean is,
- 25:07Speaker 1: you know, pretty consistent handicapper. He's playing the percentages. He's
- 25:11Speaker 1: gonna take his lumps, you know, but you just gotta
- 25:13Speaker 1: stick with those percentages on you know what, you believe.
- 25:16Speaker 1: Sean has made more than six thousand, six hundred bets
- 25:19Speaker 1: on baseball alone. Two geez bro, Like Chris said, you're
- 25:25Speaker 1: trying to grind out that percentage. So I know every
- 25:27Speaker 1: time I'm putting a hundred hours down, I'm getting between
- 25:29Speaker 1: one oh three and one oh four back on average.
- 25:31Speaker 1: So one bet, you know, I may lose, may lose
- 25:34Speaker 1: an excruciating fashion, but over time, you're just trying to
- 25:36Speaker 1: grind out that three percent. Are you usually like a
- 25:39Speaker 1: small favorite guy? Is that what you're going for? Like
- 25:41Speaker 1: the tiny favorites and just take money line. It depends
- 25:44Speaker 1: on the fight, the dynamics of the fight. You know,
- 25:46Speaker 1: if I expect a fight to go to a decision
- 25:48Speaker 1: and I also show value on one fighter's money line,
- 25:51Speaker 1: typically I'm gonna end up betting on their prop to
- 25:53Speaker 1: win by decision because you just get that juice here
- 25:55Speaker 1: plus money. But a lot of the times, especially now
- 25:58Speaker 1: with judging being so wonky, I made just to eat
- 26:00Speaker 1: the jews and bet the fight to go to a
- 26:01Speaker 1: decision instead of betting the plus money on the fighter
- 26:04Speaker 1: to win by decision, just to kind of save myself
- 26:06Speaker 1: some out. So usually do you always watch the fights
- 26:09Speaker 1: when you're when you're betting? I do, And you know,
- 26:11Speaker 1: betting those fights. You have to bet the things that
- 26:13Speaker 1: nobody wants to watch, right, Nobody wants to sit there
- 26:16Speaker 1: and root for fifteen minutes for nothing to happen. But
- 26:18Speaker 1: that is where you're going to find the most profit. Typically,
- 26:21Speaker 1: betting on bets is walking around the house hoping nobody
- 26:24Speaker 1: dies for fifteen minutes or nobody gets submitted for fifteen minutes.
- 26:27Speaker 1: It's the most uncomfortable thing you could bet in sports.
- 26:29Speaker 1: Probably it's like watching hockey overtime hoping nobody scores. But yeah,
- 26:33Speaker 1: it could be bit excruciating. But you definitely have to
- 26:36Speaker 1: find the things to bet that nobody else wants to
- 26:38Speaker 1: another thing just because we're you know, stick with the
- 26:40Speaker 1: m M A betting. One thing that I know is
- 26:42Speaker 1: that you could there's some good value in when betting
- 26:44Speaker 1: on fights. Is a lot of times the bigger name
- 26:48Speaker 1: guy is not always the best guy and the most
- 26:50Speaker 1: and most the guy who's most likely to win, And
- 26:53Speaker 1: a lot of times you'll see them as a betting
- 26:55Speaker 1: favorite over a guy who really should be the favorite.
- 26:58Speaker 1: But just because this guy has a bigger name, you
- 27:01Speaker 1: know he's getting all the he's getting all the juice.
- 27:03Speaker 1: Uh So, I always I think that's there's always value
- 27:06Speaker 1: and when you see that, and usually like one on
- 27:08Speaker 1: each fight card, there might be one fight like that
- 27:11Speaker 1: where the odds are a little off and there's some
- 27:12Speaker 1: there's some definitely money to be made. Yeah, I would
- 27:15Speaker 1: say a lot of the guys I know that the
- 27:16Speaker 1: pros that do UFC, their favorite thing is betting against
- 27:20Speaker 1: the champ. Like the champ. It takes, it's a grind
- 27:23Speaker 1: to get up there. What do you do once you're there? Right,
- 27:26Speaker 1: Like a lot of these guys might lose their edge,
- 27:28Speaker 1: Like they might start partying, they might not start training
- 27:30Speaker 1: three months early. Maybe the only start two months early.
- 27:32Speaker 1: And you talk about the time, that little bit of difference,
- 27:35Speaker 1: that's what pros are looking for, Like they're looking for
- 27:37Speaker 1: that info about a guy. Maybe he's out too late,
- 27:39Speaker 1: maybe he's not taking it serious, or he's gonna think
- 27:41Speaker 1: he's gonna walk over his next opponent. So and the
- 27:43Speaker 1: Connor McGregor, I think we all can agree he was
- 27:46Speaker 1: never as great as he was portrayed. He kind of
- 27:48Speaker 1: did that himself though his mouth and people love Bettingham
- 27:52Speaker 1: like he had that whole Irish movement, even Americans that
- 27:54Speaker 1: are Irish, like half Irish or you know their ancestors.
- 27:58Speaker 1: They were all about everything and went straight I Ireland.
- 28:01Speaker 1: That was it. Everybody was Irish right like and the
- 28:04Speaker 1: whole thing too of like him running around the Irish
- 28:06Speaker 1: flag and people following him and like like you would
- 28:09Speaker 1: see some stupid video of him posted how he's feeling
- 28:11Speaker 1: online and it's odds to move like another minus twenty
- 28:14Speaker 1: and it's like, Okay, someone just put another six figure
- 28:16Speaker 1: bet on Connor. So that was one of the things
- 28:19Speaker 1: where I did take lessons and learning like the hard
- 28:21Speaker 1: way too, because again I like betting favorites mm A,
- 28:24Speaker 1: Like I felt safe at betting these favorites just because
- 28:26Speaker 1: of the proven track record where I've learned some of
- 28:30Speaker 1: these champs. Man, they get up there, they get the
- 28:32Speaker 1: money and they don't grind like they used to before.
- 28:35Speaker 1: So Chris, I'm interested to hear your view about how
- 28:37Speaker 1: you got into betting, because that's kind of cool. Man.
- 28:39Speaker 1: You're doing the m m A because you, like you said,
- 28:40Speaker 1: you have the inside info and you know, me and
- 28:43Speaker 1: Sean we talked about all the time we die for
- 28:44Speaker 1: this info, like we love inside info. You've been burned
- 28:48Speaker 1: plenty of times, like when you start to get into it.
- 28:51Speaker 1: Did you start winning early on or were you like
- 28:53Speaker 1: one of those guys where it's like you're losing a
- 28:55Speaker 1: little bet and you were thinking yourself, you know what,
- 28:56Speaker 1: I can grind this out. I can get better at
- 28:58Speaker 1: betting as I go along. Here I was, I was
- 29:00Speaker 1: pretty good. I'm not saying I was, you know, the
- 29:02Speaker 1: best of all time, but I did. I did good.
- 29:04Speaker 1: I made a lot of I made a lot of money.
- 29:06Speaker 1: I lost money too, but I was definitely up when
- 29:09Speaker 1: I was doing it. Uh, pretty you know frequently, Um,
- 29:13Speaker 1: it's a you know, it's a tough game, it's a grind.
- 29:15Speaker 1: But when you actually sit down and you look at
- 29:17Speaker 1: the fight cards and you go through each guy and
- 29:20Speaker 1: you look at their styles and maybe watch some older videos,
- 29:22Speaker 1: and you do it the right way, you take notes
- 29:25Speaker 1: you do. It's funny how like, you know a little
- 29:28Speaker 1: bit of that extra work pays off, you know, as
- 29:31Speaker 1: opposed to just opening up up your app as the
- 29:33Speaker 1: fights are about to turn on and just like I
- 29:35Speaker 1: don't never heard of this guy, I'm gonna go with
- 29:37Speaker 1: the other guy, and you know, just kind of take
- 29:39Speaker 1: guesses based on the odds, uh, and you might do
- 29:42Speaker 1: all right. You might hit some cards. You might you
- 29:44Speaker 1: know when all right here and there, but I think,
- 29:46Speaker 1: you know, for longevity purposes, sitting down and actually doing
- 29:49Speaker 1: your homework and really believing in the pics that you're
- 29:51Speaker 1: making is important. And for me, like understanding the fight game,
- 29:55Speaker 1: knowing guys styles, you know, seeing knowing guys you know
- 29:58Speaker 1: what maybe going through and amp watching guys fight week,
- 30:02Speaker 1: you know, from their interviews to their weight cuts, um
- 30:06Speaker 1: and their press conferences, all these things. There's there's small
- 30:09Speaker 1: little things that you could see inside each one of
- 30:12Speaker 1: those that you know might swing the odds a little
- 30:15Speaker 1: bit in your in your mind. And I saw your
- 30:18Speaker 1: you're a Jets fan? Is that still true to their
- 30:20Speaker 1: Have you switched the Carolina Panthers now that you've moved
- 30:22Speaker 1: down south? No? So I was never like a big
- 30:24Speaker 1: Jets fan. I was. I'm more of a New York fan,
- 30:27Speaker 1: you know, like whoever was doing good in New York,
- 30:29Speaker 1: I'd start, you know, rooting for them. You know, Chris
- 30:31Speaker 1: Martin when he was on the Jets. Okay, I was
- 30:33Speaker 1: a Jets guy. But you know, two thousand and twelve,
- 30:35Speaker 1: you know, Giants, you know, all right, I'm a Giants fan,
- 30:37Speaker 1: they're making the playoffs. I'm with them, and you picked
- 30:40Speaker 1: a good time to leave New York because I don't
- 30:42Speaker 1: think they've been relevant any football team in New York
- 30:44Speaker 1: since that. Now, look it's now looking good over there. Yeah,
- 30:47Speaker 1: so now near the you know, now by Charlotte, you know,
- 30:50Speaker 1: I went to a couple of Panthers games there. I'm
- 30:53Speaker 1: excited for what they're looking like this year coming up
- 30:55Speaker 1: man Baker Mayfield and you know, Christian McCaffrey against some
- 30:58Speaker 1: offensive linement. Would you take their over that six and
- 31:00Speaker 1: a half? I would definitely take their that over and
- 31:03Speaker 1: a couple of suckers, a couple of lemons. Did you
- 31:06Speaker 1: guys throw that in already? Listen, I'm not doing it
- 31:08Speaker 1: as a sucker bet. That's a legit line is six
- 31:12Speaker 1: and a half. Six and a half game wins for
- 31:14Speaker 1: next year. That's a fair number for Carolina in a
- 31:16Speaker 1: weak division. And I feel like seven wins for Carolina.
- 31:20Speaker 1: Their defense will get better just by the virtue of
- 31:23Speaker 1: having Baker on the field because they will not be
- 31:25Speaker 1: on the field as much, which levels out their stats,
- 31:30Speaker 1: which puts them in a next higher tiers. Relo is
- 31:33Speaker 1: looking at me like I've got four heads right now.
- 31:36Speaker 1: That's a pro better, dude. My whole life's negative. Like
- 31:38Speaker 1: I'm just a negative guy. Like I'm on the under,
- 31:41Speaker 1: on the under, on the dog. That's that's how I
- 31:43Speaker 1: make my money bet NFL unders and dogs. How about
- 31:45Speaker 1: you showan I am a jazz fan, Chris, and I'm
- 31:48Speaker 1: very disappointed to hear your answer, which is an answer
- 31:50Speaker 1: that my dad or my uncles would give about just
- 31:52Speaker 1: being a New York fan and switching allegiances because I
- 31:55Speaker 1: know you're also an Islanders fan, and I would hope
- 31:58Speaker 1: that would weren't rooting for the Rangers. I wouldn't. That's
- 32:01Speaker 1: different that I would never root for the Rangers ever.
- 32:05Speaker 1: I don't care who they're playing. They are the team
- 32:07Speaker 1: I want to lose. I always had an issue with
- 32:09Speaker 1: anybody in like elementary school growing up and they were
- 32:12Speaker 1: a Long Island guy and they were fans of the Rangers.
- 32:14Speaker 1: I'm like, what are you doing? We have one team?
- 32:16Speaker 1: Are you freaking joking me? And so that would piss
- 32:18Speaker 1: me off. I would never go that way. I'm gonna
- 32:20Speaker 1: own the guy. Can we go back to I have
- 32:22Speaker 1: two questions to One is about Cardio. One is about quotes.
- 32:27Speaker 1: Can you tell me your resting heart rate? So wrestling
- 32:31Speaker 1: heart rate right now is like fifty six. You know,
- 32:33Speaker 1: I'm like I said, I'm focused more on strength and condition.
- 32:35Speaker 1: I mean on strength and physical therapy right now. So
- 32:39Speaker 1: cardio is not really king right now. But during my
- 32:42Speaker 1: training camps, I've had it in the thirties, which is
- 32:44Speaker 1: pretty good. Yeah. Yeah, when I'm going hard hard, diets
- 32:48Speaker 1: on point, getting the right sleep because I wear the
- 32:51Speaker 1: Whoop band, you know, not to just plug. You know,
- 32:53Speaker 1: I'm plugging Whoop. It's great. I wear this thing all
- 32:56Speaker 1: the time. I wear it throughout my sleep, so I
- 32:57Speaker 1: get my wrestling heart rate every night. It's it's amazing.
- 33:00Speaker 1: I know when I'm getting sick. I know when i'm
- 33:02Speaker 1: you know, not recovered enough the thirties, thirties that what
- 33:06Speaker 1: are you doing to get into the thirties? Killing myself,
- 33:09Speaker 1: absolutely killing myself every single workout, getting to the point
- 33:12Speaker 1: where I feel like I'm gonna die, and then continuing
- 33:14Speaker 1: and doing that multiple time. Today, Let's say I'm overweight,
- 33:18Speaker 1: I smoke weed constantly. I rest in heart rates thirty eight.
- 33:23Speaker 1: You're a freak. Yeah, I used to be an athlete
- 33:26Speaker 1: many moons ago. Maybe that helps. That's what I did.
- 33:29Speaker 1: Man rate, yours is thirty eight because you're barely human
- 33:34Speaker 1: and probably don't have a hurt wit. Hang on a second,
- 33:36Speaker 1: We're not kidding. You have a thirty eight resting heart rate,
- 33:39Speaker 1: I swear brother. Yeah, shout out to Apple if you
- 33:41Speaker 1: want to sponsor the number one game in podcasts in
- 33:43Speaker 1: the world, Apple Watch, I mean more free ship. Hang
- 33:46Speaker 1: on a second. This is this is this is dirty.
- 33:48Speaker 1: I don't want to take down Apple, but it's are
- 33:50Speaker 1: you sure that's doing it right? I need to see
- 33:52Speaker 1: on your phone right now you're resting heart rate if
- 33:54Speaker 1: it's if it's if it's not in the fifties right now,
- 33:57Speaker 1: it's not gonna be good right now because I got COVID.
- 34:00Speaker 1: I'll pull it up though. Now you got the COVID, yeah,
- 34:03Speaker 1: and afterwards we'll never see it. That there again, you're
- 34:05Speaker 1: gonna have long COVID. Can I just say that my
- 34:07Speaker 1: resting heart right is forty four. I'm just gonna say it,
- 34:10Speaker 1: are you Yeah? I'm hyped up though, all right? I
- 34:15Speaker 1: believe you before right now and it doesn't help, and
- 34:19Speaker 1: you're definitely sweating. That's got you got a good heart, bro,
- 34:23Speaker 1: here's my next question, or you're dying. I don't know, possible. Uh.
- 34:29Speaker 1: The other question is you just mentioned something really interesting
- 34:32Speaker 1: because I know Zarillo Simon both. When any of us
- 34:35Speaker 1: are doing our handicapping for something, we don't discount what
- 34:40Speaker 1: coaches say, what players say, what kind of signals they're
- 34:43Speaker 1: giving to the market during a press conference, or how
- 34:45Speaker 1: they're answering a question. And you just said something. You
- 34:49Speaker 1: will see the way fighters are responding to comments. Do
- 34:53Speaker 1: you think as a fighter yourself that strategically about what
- 34:57Speaker 1: you're going to say in the run up to a
- 35:00Speaker 1: fight in pre fight interviews, press conferences, things like that.
- 35:05Speaker 1: Do do it? Does the fighter like consciously prepare to
- 35:10Speaker 1: do you? Because because you just said you're you can
- 35:13Speaker 1: see what fighters are saying and get a sense for
- 35:16Speaker 1: how training is going or things like that. So take
- 35:19Speaker 1: me inside how the prep goes. Just for that part
- 35:21Speaker 1: of it. I mean, you know what, you know what
- 35:24Speaker 1: to say as far as the basics, but you also
- 35:28Speaker 1: know when someone's being genuine or not. For the most part,
- 35:30Speaker 1: you know, and you know, guys could say I had
- 35:32Speaker 1: the best fight camp in my of my career, or
- 35:34Speaker 1: they could say it in a way they really mean it,
- 35:36Speaker 1: and I think it's kind of reading in between the lines.
- 35:39Speaker 1: It's not really like the words that they're saying, it's
- 35:41Speaker 1: the way they look um and the way they're saying it.
- 35:44Speaker 1: I think, you know, you know, I got my bachelors
- 35:46Speaker 1: degree from psychology and psychology from Hasha University School of Greatness.
- 35:50Speaker 1: So there's things that I could do that maybe some
- 35:52Speaker 1: of you guys aren't educated enough to do, like reading
- 35:54Speaker 1: people's you know, body language, well, genius read our body
- 35:59Speaker 1: ling signmon is barely alive. You guys are all dying, yeah,
- 36:03Speaker 1: or we're an incredible shape, incredible shape. Here's another question
- 36:07Speaker 1: for you. So you were once on a sitcom. I
- 36:11Speaker 1: believe you played Adam Sandler's Nasau County police partner on
- 36:17Speaker 1: four episodes of Kevin James Kevin Kinwait. And the critiques
- 36:22Speaker 1: were that you looked like you belong to a network
- 36:25Speaker 1: show and not just because you're a handsome version of
- 36:28Speaker 1: Norm McDonald r I P. Would you have traded one
- 36:31Speaker 1: of your middleweight titles to star in your own sitcom?
- 36:36Speaker 1: A lot of work, but yeah, I think I give
- 36:38Speaker 1: up one of them. I give up my V tour
- 36:40Speaker 1: Belfort Defense. As long as we could get the syndication
- 36:44Speaker 1: guarantee to get those residuals over like the rest of
- 36:47Speaker 1: your life like Kevin James has from Kam Queen's, then
- 36:49Speaker 1: you're good for the rest of your life pretty much.
- 36:51Speaker 1: And I wanted it to be the same character I
- 36:53Speaker 1: was on the Kevin Kevin Kawait Show. I was Adam
- 36:56Speaker 1: Sandler's partner. Kevin James was Adam Sandler's used to be
- 37:00Speaker 1: Adam Salmon's partner, and Kevin retired, and I was the
- 37:04Speaker 1: new guy who was better at everything, everything that Kevin
- 37:08Speaker 1: James was ever good at. I was just I was
- 37:09Speaker 1: just a little bit better. I had some good times,
- 37:12Speaker 1: didn't we. It was great man, ten years together. That
- 37:15Speaker 1: squad car's gotta feel a little lonely without me. Well,
- 37:18Speaker 1: you know I get by go Jimmy, let's roll man. Hey,
- 37:22Speaker 1: this is my new partner, Nicky Dawson. Nick this is
- 37:24Speaker 1: my old partner, Kevin Gable. I'm the guy now. You
- 37:28Speaker 1: gotta face to go with all the stories and stuff.
- 37:31Speaker 1: So stories Christmas Eve, me chasing that crazy deer through
- 37:36Speaker 1: the mall. It was epic. That sounds awesome, but no,
- 37:41Speaker 1: it was awesome. Was this your first day working with him? No,
- 37:45Speaker 1: it's been a few months now since the last guy retired.
- 37:47Speaker 1: That's me, that's the guy he's talking about. So they
- 37:50Speaker 1: went down to the you know, batting cages. I was
- 37:52Speaker 1: just crushing every ball, big boy, that's my coule of spas.
- 37:57Speaker 1: Get it, baby, you need some bad gloves, no good. Yeah,
- 38:04Speaker 1: it's pretty self evident that the kid's got some hand
- 38:07Speaker 1: eyed coward age. Okay, but I gotta tell you something.
- 38:12Speaker 1: That one one to the kave. He tried to every
- 38:14Speaker 1: every sport we played. I was just the man. And
- 38:16Speaker 1: then at the end that was like the best singer
- 38:18Speaker 1: of all time as well. They were always singing together,
- 38:21Speaker 1: but I was like way better I sung, I like
- 38:22Speaker 1: sing opera and I was like unbelievable. And if I
- 38:31Speaker 1: could just be that character forever, just be the guy
- 38:34Speaker 1: that's better than everybody and everything and everybody loves besides
- 38:38Speaker 1: Kevin James, that would be awesome. Did you ask Kevin
- 38:41Speaker 1: James what is resting her rate? Was? I'll tell you was.
- 38:44Speaker 1: I hope it's not as low as you guys, because
- 38:48Speaker 1: it's not. That would be a good thing. She I mean,
- 38:50Speaker 1: he's not in great shape as far as like you know,
- 38:52Speaker 1: weight goes. But he is an athlete. Trained with him
- 38:56Speaker 1: countless times actually at this point, not to you know,
- 38:58Speaker 1: name drop, Like you know, we've hung out a lot
- 38:59Speaker 1: of done a lot of training with him. He's like
- 39:02Speaker 1: an exceptional athlete. He played football a Courtland University. He
- 39:05Speaker 1: was a running back and then got in a comedy.
- 39:07Speaker 1: Definitely gained some weight, but he's still that athlete. Don't
- 39:10Speaker 1: needs some of that fat. And he's been training mixed
- 39:12Speaker 1: martial arts for like almost twenty years. He could throw
- 39:15Speaker 1: down if you needed needed to. His wrestling heart race
- 39:17Speaker 1: probably all right, it's probably alright. Not as good as mine,
- 39:20Speaker 1: definitely not as good as Simons and yours. Opportunities like that,
- 39:24Speaker 1: being on a sitcom, hanging out with Sandler and James.
- 39:28Speaker 1: How crazy was that when those things first start happening
- 39:32Speaker 1: to you After you he become a UFC champion, That
- 39:36Speaker 1: happened when I wasn't UFC champion. I had lost my
- 39:38Speaker 1: belt there any but that was crazy for me. You know,
- 39:40Speaker 1: I was friends with Kevin for a while. He's from
- 39:42Speaker 1: Round and him and Adam were close friends. So he
- 39:45Speaker 1: got him on the episode and it was gonna be
- 39:47Speaker 1: my first time acting, and so Kevin knew, like me
- 39:50Speaker 1: and Kevin were friends. So I'm just I could tell
- 39:52Speaker 1: him listen, I suck helped me out, tell me, you
- 39:54Speaker 1: know everything I need to do, and he'll he'll tell
- 39:56Speaker 1: me it's not like, you know, I have to feel
- 39:57Speaker 1: embarrassed about that. But now you're bringing an Adam Sandler
- 40:00Speaker 1: the first time I'm ever acting, and it's in front
- 40:03Speaker 1: of a live audience. He's gonna look at me like
- 40:05Speaker 1: why am I wasting my time with this newbie actor
- 40:08Speaker 1: and just kind of be like a dick. So I
- 40:10Speaker 1: was super nervous and when he came in, I didn't
- 40:12Speaker 1: know what to expect. The only request he had on
- 40:15Speaker 1: that show was to have a basketball hoop around so
- 40:18Speaker 1: he could practice basketball, because that's what he does for exercise.
- 40:20Speaker 1: You know. He flew in, you know, into the airport
- 40:22Speaker 1: and by himself, he went to some random basketball park
- 40:25Speaker 1: in Brooklyn to play some pickup basketball, Like how do
- 40:28Speaker 1: you do that? Everyone knows who you are, Like, like
- 40:30Speaker 1: what's that like? And he's like, you know, I kind
- 40:32Speaker 1: of just wait for one guy to be like, you know, hey,
- 40:34Speaker 1: leave him alone, let's play basketball and usually you know,
- 40:37Speaker 1: he doesn't and that's what usually happens. He's just such
- 40:39Speaker 1: a down to earth dude. He was awesome to hang
- 40:42Speaker 1: out with. You know, obviously Kevin's the man and uh
- 40:45Speaker 1: And to have my first acting experience to be with
- 40:46Speaker 1: those guys and I had a bunch of lines. It
- 40:50Speaker 1: was nerve wracking. But the whole key with acting, not
- 40:53Speaker 1: that I'm a pro, is that you want to sound comfortable.
- 40:56Speaker 1: It's like me and you're talking right now. Besides, you're
- 40:58Speaker 1: doing in front of these cameras and lives, and you
- 41:00Speaker 1: just want to like, you know, you could do the
- 41:02Speaker 1: US and you could stumble because that's normal, that's normal
- 41:05Speaker 1: day life. And so because they were so like chill
- 41:09Speaker 1: with each other and they weren't nervous, and it just
- 41:11Speaker 1: they were so relaxed, it helped me become more relaxed.
- 41:14Speaker 1: I had a good performance, I think because just because
- 41:16Speaker 1: of that they were so relaxed, I was able to
- 41:18Speaker 1: relax and just have fun. Acting is super hard. Man,
- 41:20Speaker 1: remember your lines and then being able to spume out
- 41:23Speaker 1: the right way is not easy. It felt like I
- 41:26Speaker 1: was getting ready for a fight. Kevin James would be
- 41:28Speaker 1: like I would be that guy. If I had a
- 41:30Speaker 1: fight that we're going to the octagon and Bruce Bucker
- 41:33Speaker 1: would be like, are you ready? And are you ready?
- 41:35Speaker 1: And he'd be like, no, I'm actually I'm not ready.
- 41:36Speaker 1: I'm not not ready. Can we get kind of get
- 41:39Speaker 1: a minute? And he just like jumped out. He's like,
- 41:41Speaker 1: I don't know how you guys do that. They were
- 41:43Speaker 1: laughing at me being because I was so nervous for
- 41:46Speaker 1: that and they just didn't understand why or how like,
- 41:49Speaker 1: and I'm like, man, this is different. Are you the
- 41:50Speaker 1: reason Kevin James did that fight movie? No, No, that
- 41:54Speaker 1: was that that was before we were friends. That I
- 41:58Speaker 1: wish I was friends with him at point all do Man,
- 42:01Speaker 1: I would have loved have been in that movie. Here
- 42:03Speaker 1: comes to Boom, by the way, That's what it is, right, Chris.
- 42:06Speaker 1: I have to ask you about Ray Longo because we've
- 42:07Speaker 1: talked about a lot along Island Legends on this podcast,
- 42:10Speaker 1: but I need more Ray Longo in my life. Not
- 42:12Speaker 1: only is he trained yourself and two other UFC champions
- 42:16Speaker 1: Matt Sarah, who closed as I believe still the biggest
- 42:19Speaker 1: underdog and UFC history to win in a title fight
- 42:21Speaker 1: anyway against GSP Algermaine Sterling one is an underdog and
- 42:25Speaker 1: then defended his belt as an underdog against Pieter Jan.
- 42:28Speaker 1: So all three of you have won his underdogs. What's
- 42:31Speaker 1: it like to have Ray as a coach. What's it
- 42:33Speaker 1: like to have him is in your corner? What's like
- 42:35Speaker 1: some of the best advice he's ever given you? Because
- 42:38Speaker 1: he's just a complete character for people who haven't observed
- 42:41Speaker 1: him at least on TV, I'm curious, but he's like
- 42:43Speaker 1: in real life. But he I mean, he reminds me
- 42:45Speaker 1: of a cross between like Ray Romano and all of
- 42:47Speaker 1: my uncles from Queens. So I'm just curious what it's
- 42:50Speaker 1: like to be around let Ray Longo and how inspirationally
- 42:53Speaker 1: is let's go keep that jam moving out. He's the man.
- 42:56Speaker 1: I mean, I think he's gonna go down as one
- 42:58Speaker 1: of the best coaches of all time. To have three
- 43:00Speaker 1: guys from Long Island and a local area, but you
- 43:03Speaker 1: know Baldwin East, Baldwin, East Meadow and Uniondale. You know
- 43:06Speaker 1: old within like I don't know, five miles of each other.
- 43:09Speaker 1: Take three kids from scratch and turn them into the
- 43:12Speaker 1: UFC World champion. It's on precedent that no one's ever
- 43:16Speaker 1: done it. You know, other coaches have had a bunch
- 43:17Speaker 1: of you know, they've had other champions like Happier Mendez
- 43:20Speaker 1: at a K, but it's all it's not guys from
- 43:22Speaker 1: that area. You know. He took local talent and turned
- 43:25Speaker 1: them into you know, world championship, which is unbelieable. And
- 43:28Speaker 1: it's because how much he cares, like he becomes friends
- 43:31Speaker 1: with you. It's not like you know, coach where you know,
- 43:33Speaker 1: hay Straw up for an hour, we're gonna hit pads,
- 43:35Speaker 1: I'm gonna put you through a workout. You're gonna pay
- 43:37Speaker 1: me and go home. It's he's there literally every day
- 43:40Speaker 1: of the week anytime you want uh, and he's you know,
- 43:43Speaker 1: he's pushing you, he's pulling you back when you you
- 43:46Speaker 1: need to get pulled back. He's not afraid that. You know,
- 43:48Speaker 1: there's times I've came to the gym also you know
- 43:49Speaker 1: I'm having you know, I'm fighting with my wife or
- 43:51Speaker 1: you know, I got something going on with my kids,
- 43:53Speaker 1: and he's like, yeah, we're not working out today, we're
- 43:54Speaker 1: chilling and we just chill. And so he was really
- 43:57Speaker 1: he's really good with that, and that would be like
- 43:59Speaker 1: on a Sunday, he's wasting his time coming in and
- 44:01Speaker 1: he'd be like, you know, all right, we're just chilling today,
- 44:03Speaker 1: let's play guitar. And Uh So he's just a good
- 44:07Speaker 1: dude who really cares. He gets to know his fighters
- 44:09Speaker 1: if he likes it, He's gonna get to know you
- 44:10Speaker 1: on a real personal level. He's gonna know what's going
- 44:12Speaker 1: on in your life. You know, you're gonna know what's
- 44:13Speaker 1: going on his life. Become like best friends. And his
- 44:17Speaker 1: faith in us, like just is at the ultimate level.
- 44:19Speaker 1: And a guy who is as good of a coach
- 44:22Speaker 1: as him, for him to have, you know, confidence and
- 44:25Speaker 1: you just gives you such confidence in yourself to where
- 44:27Speaker 1: you just don't think. You just don't feel like you
- 44:28Speaker 1: could lose, and you don't want to lose. You don't
- 44:30Speaker 1: want to let him down. Uh, he's really such he's
- 44:34Speaker 1: a great coach. That's that. You asked me a few
- 44:37Speaker 1: questions in there, and one of them was best advice.
- 44:41Speaker 1: Best advice? Um, I mean the infamous one was in
- 44:44Speaker 1: between rounds when I was fighting in silver the first time,
- 44:47Speaker 1: and and in between the first and second round, you know,
- 44:50Speaker 1: I took down Anderson, I was ground and pounding him.
- 44:52Speaker 1: He got back up, he started, you know, showboating, doing
- 44:54Speaker 1: the normal thing that Anderson does, you know, trying to
- 44:56Speaker 1: mock me and make him feel like, you know, I
- 44:58Speaker 1: have no chance to beat him and h and so
- 45:00Speaker 1: in between rounds, I come back, I sit down on
- 45:02Speaker 1: the stool and he's like, I want you to punch
- 45:04Speaker 1: a hole through his fucking chest. And now was technical
- 45:14Speaker 1: advice because when a guy so Innton Silva was leaning
- 45:18Speaker 1: back with his head and moving his head, but he
- 45:19Speaker 1: wasn't moving his body. When you're not moving your feet,
- 45:22Speaker 1: you want to go through their body first, hit him
- 45:24Speaker 1: strong there and then come up into the head. And
- 45:26Speaker 1: so that's what the that's really what he was trying
- 45:29Speaker 1: to get out. But he said it's in such an
- 45:31Speaker 1: emotional way that like got me going, like I sucked
- 45:33Speaker 1: this guy up and then I ended up knocking him
- 45:35Speaker 1: out that round. So yeah, that's probably the most memorable
- 45:38Speaker 1: memorable advice, but there's been a lot over the years.
- 45:41Speaker 1: That's what I say to our team too, Hi, Simon Sean,
- 45:46Speaker 1: I just want you to punch a hole in their
- 45:48Speaker 1: fucking chest. That gets you amped up, Hit people in
- 45:53Speaker 1: the fucking mouth, run it up, there fucking throat. That's it.
- 46:00Speaker 1: Cut it in, baby, Chris Wideman, Long Island's Finest Chris
- 46:05Speaker 1: Wideman Day coming up. Don't miss don't don't miss it.
