- 0:03Speaker 1: Look who's back. Fill in the blank.
- 0:09Speaker 2: Me or him. Look who's back. Back again.
- 0:11Speaker 1: What goes next? Thank you. Are we going to get
- 0:13Speaker 1: Kiss the Flag copyright if we go too deep into
- 0:16Speaker 1: that song?
- 0:17Speaker 2: Maybe.
- 0:19Speaker 3: As long as we don't do any Adele songs, then
- 0:22Speaker 3: we won't get copyrighted because pretty much I sound exactly
- 0:26Speaker 3: like Adele when I sing her songs.
- 0:28Speaker 2: Hello.
- 0:30Speaker 1: Yes. Right, so no Adele and no Frank Sinatra, or
- 0:35Speaker 1: we will be flagged for copyright with Kratz and with
- 0:39Speaker 1: Todd Father. Todd, good to see you. How was Little League?
- 0:42Speaker 2: It was good, man. It was good.
- 0:43Speaker 4: Another fun year, another good series between a bunch of
- 0:49Speaker 4: states and countries, and it's always a fun time, man.
- 0:54Speaker 2: It always is.
- 0:54Speaker 4: Curacao came out on top. They were the best team.
- 0:58Speaker 4: They had the best pitching. They were dynamite, dominant, excuse me.
- 1:01Speaker 4: And yeah, another fun year and another record-breaking year for
- 1:07Speaker 4: some guys too. And Little League, there was a lot
- 1:09Speaker 4: of records broken this year.
- 1:10Speaker 2: It was crazy.
- 1:12Speaker 1: Was there one moment, one exchange, one stat, one player?
- 1:17Speaker 1: Give me something.
- 1:18Speaker 4: I will give you a kid named from Ohio, Hamilton, Ohio,
- 1:23Speaker 4: who's been there six times now. that little league, a
- 1:27Speaker 4: kid named Boone Treadway. He actually broke two records of mine.
- 1:31Speaker 4: One was the most walks in the little league world series.
- 1:34Speaker 4: I had eight or eight. He broke it with 11
- 1:38Speaker 4: and he broke our team record. Their, their team broke
- 1:41Speaker 4: our team record.
- 1:41Speaker 2: And walks too. So they, they lead.
- 1:45Speaker 4: Williams for, I don't think that'll ever be broken. 11
- 1:48Speaker 4: walks in, I mean, what'd he play? Six, seven, eight games,
- 1:52Speaker 4: something like that. So he was, uh, leadoff hitter, and
- 1:54Speaker 4: I think he only got one hit too.
- 1:56Speaker 2: It was crazy.
- 1:57Speaker 3: Boone Treadwell? What a big league name.
- 2:00Speaker 2: Treadway. Treadway, yeah.
- 2:01Speaker 3: Treadway? That's a big league name. Is it different? Was
- 2:04Speaker 3: it different for you this year, Todd? Because you were
- 2:07Speaker 3: coaching your son's team trying to get to this spot?
- 2:11Speaker 2: Definitely. Definitely was.
- 2:13Speaker 4: I mean, now you kind of see all the kids,
- 2:15Speaker 4: you kind of compare them a little bit.
- 2:18Speaker 2: Oh, yeah.
- 2:19Speaker 4: When my son had been out playing against these kids,
- 2:21Speaker 4: most definitely would have. But You know, you got to
- 2:24Speaker 4: have the team. You got to have the town. You
- 2:26Speaker 4: got to have the right pieces to play the part.
- 2:28Speaker 4: And we just, you know, we weren't as deserving to go.
- 2:32Speaker 4: We lost to the same team twice in the sectionals.
- 2:36Speaker 4: We won the districts. But, you know, Bayonne from New
- 2:39Speaker 4: Jersey put on a really good show. And it was
- 2:43Speaker 4: fun to have a Jersey team in there. It's been
- 2:44Speaker 4: a while, but it was fun times broadcasting them.
- 2:48Speaker 2: Not trying to be as biased, but, you know, pretty
- 2:51Speaker 2: cool to see them do what they did.
- 2:54Speaker 1: Blake Treadway. That sounds like a front office darling, too,
- 2:59Speaker 1: with the plate discipline already. Front offices are like, oh,
- 3:02Speaker 1: look at all the walks. Oh, the on-base percentage. The
- 3:07Speaker 1: OPS possibilities. But good for you, Blake.
- 3:11Speaker 2: Good series.
- 3:12Speaker 1: Way to break some records of Todd Fathers. We love that.
- 3:15Speaker 1: All right, let's charge. The battle for the National League
- 3:24Speaker 1: East is on. Kratz, did you think the Phillies were
- 3:27Speaker 1: going to be in this place? They have seven still
- 3:30Speaker 1: to play against Atlanta. That series is getting going, and
- 3:34Speaker 1: it's going to be intense. Well, you're kind of shaking
- 3:37Speaker 1: your head. You did think they were going to be
- 3:39Speaker 1: in this spot? I mean, did you think they were
- 3:41Speaker 1: going to be in this spot a month ago when
- 3:43Speaker 1: they were barely hanging on to a wild card position
- 3:46Speaker 1: at all?
- 3:48Speaker 3: I mean, this spot. What is this spot? Like, to me,
- 3:51Speaker 3: I think we need to set our grounds of like,
- 3:53Speaker 3: what is four games back with seven to play against
- 3:57Speaker 3: the same team? Is it real? Like, are they really close?
- 4:03Speaker 3: I guess, you know, to play the hype train, yeah,
- 4:07Speaker 3: but I just think it's so hard to beat the
- 4:11Speaker 3: top teams to make up four games when you're talking
- 4:15Speaker 3: about the top teams. When you're talking about like, the
- 4:18Speaker 3: Cardinals catching the Marlins or something like that. Yeah. You know,
- 4:22Speaker 3: I think there's that next tier. So are they this close?
- 4:25Speaker 3: I mean, did I think these two teams would be
- 4:27Speaker 3: the best two teams in national league East?
- 4:29Speaker 2: Yes.
- 4:30Speaker 3: When they had a 10 game lead, when the Braves
- 4:33Speaker 3: had a 10 or 11 game lead earlier in the season,
- 4:35Speaker 3: did I think the Phillies were going to catch them? No,
- 4:37Speaker 3: I don't think the Phillies have actually caught them. I
- 4:40Speaker 3: think they've just made it closer and, you know, water
- 4:42Speaker 3: levels out.
- 4:44Speaker 2: I would have to agree with him.
- 4:46Speaker 4: And, Ultimately, look how many games are left, 22 games,
- 4:50Speaker 4: four games. It seems like you can get there, and
- 4:54Speaker 4: I'm not saying they can't, but the ebbs and flows.
- 4:57Speaker 4: They got close one time, kind of fizzled off a
- 5:00Speaker 4: little bit. Everything really has to go right for this
- 5:04Speaker 4: to happen. I think, honestly, the biggest thing is when
- 5:09Speaker 4: they play against each other, they have to find a
- 5:12Speaker 4: way not only to win that series but win it,
- 5:14Speaker 4: you know, three to one, not, it can't, it can't be,
- 5:18Speaker 4: or a two to one or three to one, whatever
- 5:20Speaker 4: it is. And their last final games they have, they
- 5:22Speaker 4: need to game two games just to be like, all right,
- 5:25Speaker 4: so now we need help. And that's the worst part
- 5:28Speaker 4: about the whole thing. When, when you need other teams
- 5:32Speaker 4: to help you out and you look back on the
- 5:34Speaker 4: end of the year and be like, man, there was
- 5:35Speaker 4: four to six games where we probably should have won
- 5:38Speaker 4: those games. If it wasn't for this happening or that happening.
- 5:42Speaker 4: And there's, there's always a handful where you can look
- 5:44Speaker 4: back and say, well, Darn, we're up four in the
- 5:46Speaker 4: ninth inning.
- 5:46Speaker 2: What happened? Or, you know, just to give an example.
- 5:51Speaker 1: Braves have won five of six in the series so
- 5:53Speaker 1: far this season. It starts on Friday, by the way.
- 5:56Speaker 1: And the pitching is lined up really nicely. It's going
- 5:59Speaker 1: to be fun. The matchups are good. Sale against Sanchez
- 6:04Speaker 1: to kick off the series on Friday. I mean, you're
- 6:07Speaker 1: going to put your big boys out there. So, hey,
- 6:10Speaker 1: we're just saying. Is there a chance that the Phillies
- 6:12Speaker 1: continue this? They were just 21-7 in August.
- 6:17Speaker 2: Yes.
- 6:18Speaker 1: Best record in the month of August. How far can
- 6:22Speaker 1: you carry momentum like that? We'll see. I mean, this
- 6:24Speaker 1: is the series, right, Kratz? They take three out of four.
- 6:27Speaker 1: We start to talk about the possibilities.
- 6:30Speaker 2: Call me.
- 6:31Speaker 3: Call me Monday.
- 6:33Speaker 1: Yeah, but all Monday they play again. It's a wraparound.
- 6:35Speaker 2: I know.
- 6:35Speaker 3: It's a four-game wraparound, John.
- 6:38Speaker 2: Their schedule. I mean, you see Atlanta's.
- 6:41Speaker 4: Finishing schedule who they play i mean they're no slouches
- 6:45Speaker 4: so this i mean yeah i agreed but oh man
- 6:53Speaker 4: philly's got washington they got the mets in there um
- 6:58Speaker 4: oh man every team they're playing you know it it's
- 7:02Speaker 4: gonna be very interesting it's gonna be very interesting.
- 7:05Speaker 1: Okay, I'm going to read it. Keep it up there
- 7:07Speaker 1: just so I can tell the podcast crowd because we're
- 7:09Speaker 1: at the point where you can go through a schedule.
- 7:10Speaker 1: It takes 20 seconds. That's how many games are left.
- 7:13Speaker 1: So after this Phillies-Braves series, the Braves are home against
- 7:17Speaker 1: the Rays, and then they welcome in the Phillies. Again,
- 7:20Speaker 1: that will end the season series with Philly at that point.
- 7:23Speaker 1: Then they hit the road to the Cubs and the Astros,
- 7:27Speaker 1: and then they're back home for three against the Reds,
- 7:30Speaker 1: and then they hit the road for three against the Marlins.
- 7:32Speaker 1: Marlins are usually pesky at the end of a season, too.
- 7:35Speaker 1: They're into that. And then for the Phillies, we can
- 7:39Speaker 1: show you what they have going on, too, to compare
- 7:41Speaker 1: and contrast after they play Atlanta. There's a lot of
- 7:44Speaker 1: similarities here. I mean, they're home hosting Houston. Then they've
- 7:48Speaker 1: got that Atlanta series again, right? So we talked about that,
- 7:51Speaker 1: sandwiching the Houston series with the Phillies and the Braves.
- 7:54Speaker 1: Then the Phillies are in D.C. Then they're in Queens
- 7:59Speaker 1: against the Mets. And they finish all home. Against good teams,
- 8:03Speaker 1: but teams that could be prepping for the playoffs. That's
- 8:06Speaker 1: Milwaukee and Tampa Bay. Now, when I say prepping for
- 8:10Speaker 1: the playoffs, yes, maybe your foot is a drop off
- 8:13Speaker 1: the pedal. But if you're Milwaukee and Tampa Bay, those
- 8:17Speaker 1: are the last competitive games that you're going to play
- 8:19Speaker 1: for a bit. Those are two teams in the buy.
- 8:22Speaker 1: So just throwing all of that out there. When you
- 8:24Speaker 1: look at it, do you feel like there's much of
- 8:26Speaker 1: an edge for one side or the other? Technically, by
- 8:29Speaker 1: strength of schedule, the Braves have it. a little bit tougher.
- 8:32Speaker 1: It's a top five toughest schedule down the stretch than Philadelphia.
- 8:37Speaker 1: I mean, Philly has the Nats and the Mets in there.
- 8:41Speaker 1: I mean, the Mets are playing better lately. The Nats
- 8:44Speaker 1: are not. So there's an opportunity here. That's all.
- 8:48Speaker 3: There's an opportunity, but it happens exactly like Todd said,
- 8:51Speaker 3: this series. I'm not saying it has to be must-win
- 8:55Speaker 3: game one, but you can't say– yeah, we got four
- 8:59Speaker 3: games set. You know, if we could, if we could
- 9:01Speaker 3: split this, you know, no, that that's why the Braves
- 9:05Speaker 3: four game lead is such a massive lead. It's such a,
- 9:10Speaker 3: it's so tough to take three or four from a
- 9:13Speaker 3: first place team that has beaten you five of six
- 9:15Speaker 3: times this year. I think it's so tough even with,
- 9:19Speaker 3: I mean, the four starters, the edge for the Braves,
- 9:23Speaker 3: for the Phillies is definitely with the starting rotation, nothing
- 9:26Speaker 3: against Tyler Malley, what he's done. Martin Perez has had really,
- 9:30Speaker 3: really good starts. Bryce Elder has had his moments. And
- 9:34Speaker 3: Chris Sales, probably the runner-up Cy Young Award winner in
- 9:38Speaker 3: the National League. But to go Christopher Sanchez, Zach Wheeler,
- 9:42Speaker 3: Aaron Nola, and Jesus Lizardo, you're honestly, right now, in
- 9:47Speaker 3: their last five to seven starts, depending on who I
- 9:50Speaker 3: selectively choose, Christopher Sanchez and Zach Wheeler are the two
- 9:54Speaker 3: worst pitchers of those four recently. Lizardo's been lights.
- 10:00Speaker 1: Out.
- 10:00Speaker 3: Nola has, his last five starts have been like vintage Nola.
- 10:05Speaker 3: So you have to come out and beat this team.
- 10:08Speaker 3: The tough part for the Phillies is, even if you
- 10:11Speaker 3: get to those starters, that bullpen is suffocating.
- 10:16Speaker 2: Agreed.
- 10:17Speaker 4: And there's seven games. These two teams got to play
- 10:19Speaker 4: seven games. Philly, in order to be into this, they
- 10:24Speaker 4: have to go five and two in those games.
- 10:26Speaker 3: I have to be.
- 10:27Speaker 4: And I don't know if they can. It's going to
- 10:30Speaker 4: be very critical. Four and three, you gain one game.
- 10:36Speaker 4: You know what I mean?
- 10:37Speaker 2: Yes. I would say a five and two to make it, okay.
- 10:43Speaker 4: Here we go. Like, this is going to be awesome
- 10:45Speaker 4: to watch. So, and yes, four games in a row
- 10:48Speaker 4: starts now. So put your best foot forward.
- 10:51Speaker 2: Buckle up. This is where baseball becomes really fun.
- 10:54Speaker 3: I think this is also like what is each team
- 10:57Speaker 3: focusing on. The Braves are a game back, I think.
- 11:00Speaker 3: Either a game or a game and a half back
- 11:02Speaker 3: of the Dodgers. This is a team that plays every
- 11:05Speaker 3: single one of their starting position players every game that
- 11:10Speaker 3: they're healthy. I mean, Blake, Drake Baldwin played hasn't played
- 11:15Speaker 3: every game this year because he was hurt. But when
- 11:17Speaker 3: he's been healthy, he's out there DH and catching, whatever
- 11:19Speaker 3: it is. Like these guys play every single day. I
- 11:22Speaker 3: think they're focused on catching the Dodgers. And sometimes when
- 11:27Speaker 3: you focus on something that's out of your control, something
- 11:31Speaker 3: that's not what's right in front of you, then you
- 11:35Speaker 3: miss out on that. So if the Braves say, we
- 11:38Speaker 3: got to catch the Dodgers, we're catching them, what are
- 11:40Speaker 3: the Dodgers doing? All of a sudden, the Phillies are
- 11:43Speaker 3: going to be like, swoop in there and take a
- 11:47Speaker 3: few phone. So you got to keep your focus on
- 11:49Speaker 3: the right things at this time of year.
- 11:51Speaker 1: So after sale against Sanchez, Martin Perez faces Zach Wheeler.
- 11:56Speaker 1: Prez actually has the edge in ERA. I know there's
- 11:58Speaker 1: plenty of other stats to dissect. Sale has the edge
- 12:01Speaker 1: in ERA over Sanchez, but Perez on Saturday, 305 ERA.
- 12:05Speaker 1: Wheeler had that hiccup for a bit and then the
- 12:07Speaker 1: bounce back, but he's at a 3-3-1 on the season.
- 12:09Speaker 1: Then it's Tyler Molle who's been much better with Atlanta
- 12:12Speaker 1: than he was before. going up against Nola. That should
- 12:15Speaker 1: actually be an advantage Braves pitching matchup. And then on Monday,
- 12:19Speaker 1: Elder faces Lizardo, and that should be advantage Phillies. Lizardo
- 12:23Speaker 1: has been ridiculous. We're going to talk more about the Phillies, too.
- 12:27Speaker 1: We have Tom McCarthy joining us on the show soon.
- 12:30Speaker 1: So that's your series. It's going to be fun.
- 12:32Speaker 2: Buckle up.
- 12:33Speaker 1: Eric Kratz lives in Pennsylvania, so he gets last word.
- 12:36Speaker 3: All I got to say is the Phillies' new approach
- 12:40Speaker 3: of not striking out as much will be very interesting
- 12:42Speaker 3: to see how they face this entire Braves pitching staff,
- 12:46Speaker 3: bullpen and starters. Yeah.
- 12:50Speaker 1: Oh, nice shirt. Bryce Harper animated shirt.
- 12:53Speaker 2: Very good.
- 12:54Speaker 1: The Phillies acquired Louisa rise. He hasn't been great with them,
- 12:59Speaker 1: but they also just acquired his aura and they're making
- 13:04Speaker 1: more contact striking out less. Bryce Harper's on fire too,
- 13:08Speaker 1: by the way. Oh, they're pretty. We got new Animated shirts.
- 13:13Speaker 1: You're looking at some of them. Tristan Peters, who comes
- 13:15Speaker 1: from Banana Ball, hence the banana on there. Pete Alonzo
- 13:18Speaker 1: and the crab from Baltimore. This is a personal favorite.
- 13:22Speaker 1: The Magician. I love the nickname for Esmeralda Valdez. So,
- 13:25Speaker 1: new animated shirts. FoulTerritoryShop.com. There's a Jackson Merrill one. Kratz
- 13:29Speaker 1: is wearing the OG Bryce Harper animated shirt. I've got
- 13:33Speaker 1: the Ben Orozco Pollo.
- 13:36Speaker 2: Ben Rice.
- 13:37Speaker 5: Boom.
- 13:38Speaker 2: There it is.
- 13:38Speaker 3: And chicken. With chicken.
- 13:41Speaker 4: Mm-hmm.
- 13:41Speaker 3: Just Bryce Harper just giving him this one with the
- 13:46Speaker 3: perma beard too. Permanent beard. I want to see players
- 13:50Speaker 3: make their own shirts too. I think that would be
- 13:52Speaker 3: a cool line where they're like, I want a little
- 13:54Speaker 3: input on this. I think this is legit. I like that.
- 13:59Speaker 3: I like that Arose one.
- 14:02Speaker 1: Kratz, you have a little piece of paper anywhere around
- 14:04Speaker 1: the house? You just write it down and then drop
- 14:07Speaker 1: it into the suggestion box.
- 14:09Speaker 3: Into the comment box. because there's definitely some artistic players
- 14:13Speaker 3: that could definitely create their own.
- 14:16Speaker 1: Like thoughts draw it no but think of hey something
- 14:21Speaker 1: that i connect with yes and then we can make
- 14:24Speaker 1: that happen i like the idea while we're on the
- 14:27Speaker 1: topic of players todd father stat name pronunciation whatever kind
- 14:33Speaker 1: of change from the top of the show on a
- 14:35Speaker 1: future major league player.
- 14:37Speaker 2: Yeah, I said Blake Treadway. It was Boone. His name
- 14:40Speaker 2: is Boone Treadway. Even better name. Wow. The name that
- 14:44Speaker 2: you will want to remember. Boone Treadway.
- 14:45Speaker 3: I thought you said Boone. I thought you said Boone.
- 14:48Speaker 1: He might have said it once, and then it might
- 14:49Speaker 1: have transitioned to Blake. And in fairness, Todd, there's a
- 14:52Speaker 1: Blake Frazier.
- 14:55Speaker 2: That's true. And then you kept saying Blake, so we
- 14:58Speaker 2: stuck with Blake.
- 15:00Speaker 1: Once I heard Blake, I just ran with it.
- 15:02Speaker 2: All good. Boone.
- 15:03Speaker 3: Big league name.
- 15:05Speaker 2: Not only a good ball player, even a good person, too.
- 15:09Speaker 3: Were you a good person when you were in the
- 15:11Speaker 3: Little League, Todd? When you gave the interviews, were you like, yeah,
- 15:15Speaker 3: I just like to play and my team is fun
- 15:18Speaker 3: and does anyone have any jolly ranchers?
- 15:20Speaker 2: No, I was jolly, man.
- 15:22Speaker 4: I would answer with full sentences and they might not
- 15:26Speaker 4: have been the longest like I do now, but they
- 15:28Speaker 4: were fine.
- 15:33Speaker 2: But you liked it.
- 15:33Speaker 1: You liked the limelight. You had fun with it.
- 15:36Speaker 2: Loved it. Loved it. It was good times there at
- 15:39Speaker 2: Tom's River.
- 15:44Speaker 1: Hot corner time. The Miz actually gave up a career-high
- 15:47Speaker 1: five earned runs. His team still won. But the slippery
- 15:51Speaker 1: mound issues continue for the Miz, right? He finishes in
- 15:55Speaker 1: a different spot from everyone else. So let's get his
- 15:58Speaker 1: thoughts post-game on what he thought happened. And for us
- 16:02Speaker 1: to dissect... Could this be a problem in the playoffs
- 16:06Speaker 1: where everyone will start talking about it and it's mound gate?
- 16:09Speaker 1: Here's Miz.
- 16:11Speaker 5: You know, I mean, didn't feel wonderful.
- 16:13Speaker 2: Didn't feel great.
- 16:14Speaker 5: You know, obviously the felt soggy the whole time, you know,
- 16:17Speaker 5: weather played a factor in that. So lost grip, but
- 16:21Speaker 5: you know, had to make it work.
- 16:23Speaker 4: Can you explain the challenge of that when the mound
- 16:24Speaker 4: gets soft, when it's wet and that leg starts to slip,
- 16:28Speaker 4: how difficult it is to feel comfortable?
- 16:31Speaker 5: Yeah, I mean, you start second-guessing everything. You start trying
- 16:34Speaker 5: to make pitches too big. You know, it's trying to
- 16:38Speaker 5: make things too spot on. So, you know, start leaking
- 16:41Speaker 5: places and, you know, you got to calm yourself down
- 16:43Speaker 5: and figure out a way to get through it.
- 16:45Speaker 6: Miz, this seems like something that has come up now,
- 16:47Speaker 6: your last couple road starts. And we saw you throw
- 16:51Speaker 6: a bullpen on the actual mound at Monday. Is there
- 16:53Speaker 6: anything else you're able to do on these road starts?
- 16:56Speaker 5: Yeah, I mean, there's a lot we can do. You know,
- 16:58Speaker 5: there's stuff that I can't tell you guys and I
- 17:00Speaker 5: really don't want to, that fact. But no, I mean,
- 17:05Speaker 5: our guys over here are trying their best and trying
- 17:07Speaker 5: to make everything come out the best, back in better.
- 17:10Speaker 2: So it's fun.
- 17:12Speaker 1: Well, they're having fun in Milwaukee. That's a loud clubhouse.
- 17:14Speaker 1: Usually it's kind of quiet when the media is in there.
- 17:17Speaker 1: And it sounded like someone was having a doozy of
- 17:19Speaker 1: a conversation about something in life. But I digress. Kratz,
- 17:24Speaker 1: if you're the Miz's catcher, what do you have for
- 17:28Speaker 1: me here?
- 17:29Speaker 3: I mean, if I'm the Miz's catcher, I'm trying to
- 17:32Speaker 3: pump this guy up. I'm trying to make him feel
- 17:34Speaker 3: as good as he can every day, no matter where
- 17:36Speaker 3: he's at. But the reality is, I don't think, like,
- 17:41Speaker 3: the more this comes to light, the more that this
- 17:43Speaker 3: is like a thing. We talked about it the other day. Like,
- 17:48Speaker 3: when he goes into wherever they're going to go into,
- 17:51Speaker 3: do you think Major League Baseball is going to go
- 17:53Speaker 3: to the Dodger stadium grounds crew and go, Hey, you
- 17:58Speaker 3: guys need to add one more foot of clay in
- 18:03Speaker 3: the landing area. They're like, what, why would we have
- 18:06Speaker 3: to change our field to, you know, help or enable
- 18:11Speaker 3: another pitcher? So I think this is something that for him,
- 18:14Speaker 3: for hooky, his pitching coach, they have to figure out
- 18:18Speaker 3: what it takes sometimes to, you know, the conditions make
- 18:23Speaker 3: you make adjustments and he's going to have to do
- 18:25Speaker 3: that because unless he's pitching in Milwaukee, clearly he's slipping
- 18:29Speaker 3: wherever he's going.
- 18:32Speaker 4: Well, have they like talked about maybe changing his socks,
- 18:36Speaker 4: maybe putting on new cleats? Like you can, your feet
- 18:40Speaker 4: can be absolutely drenched just from warming up. Like people
- 18:43Speaker 4: get sweaty feet and it can leak into your cleats
- 18:46Speaker 4: and all of anything else.
- 18:46Speaker 2: I mean, I don't know.
- 18:47Speaker 4: I mean, is there, anything else they've thought of because
- 18:50Speaker 4: this it's just, it's weird. It's a weird situation. I'm
- 18:53Speaker 4: not saying it's not the dirt. I'm not saying they
- 18:57Speaker 4: can't fix.
- 18:58Speaker 2: It either, but maybe it's the cleat. I don't know.
- 19:02Speaker 2: I don't know.
- 19:02Speaker 4: Maybe where he's landing all of a sudden, the cleats
- 19:05Speaker 4: not there. I mean, people are like, Oh, you're crazy.
- 19:08Speaker 4: This and that, but there's been crazier things. So have
- 19:11Speaker 4: they had conversations about that? And also, you know, If
- 19:16Speaker 4: it doesn't get fixed, they've got to find a way.
- 19:18Speaker 4: And if he's the only one, then we've got a
- 19:19Speaker 4: big problem. I don't know what's going on.
- 19:22Speaker 3: I mean, he clearly is the best pitcher in the
- 19:24Speaker 3: National League this year. He's going to win the Cy
- 19:26Speaker 3: Young unless something crazy happens. And to me, I think
- 19:30Speaker 3: if you're a freak among freaks, like Major League Baseball
- 19:34Speaker 3: is the best players in the world. And he's the
- 19:38Speaker 3: best pitcher right now. And he's doing something that's out
- 19:41Speaker 3: of the boundaries of what– you know, we're used to
- 19:45Speaker 3: as far as a pitcher. Like if you if you
- 19:47Speaker 3: were somebody that really steps way cross body and the
- 19:51Speaker 3: other pitcher creates a hole that is like right where
- 19:55Speaker 3: your foot's going to be kind of landing but you're
- 19:58Speaker 3: you know it kind of rolls your ankle you would
- 20:00Speaker 3: make the adjustment so he has to make the adjustment
- 20:02Speaker 3: somehow I doubt it's his sweaty socks but But what
- 20:06Speaker 3: you said before, Todd, I could 100% get behind. When
- 20:11Speaker 3: you're playing like the Premier League, if the field isn't
- 20:14Speaker 3: soaking wet, they wear different types of cleats. If it's
- 20:18Speaker 3: soaking wet because they wet the field in soccer like excessively,
- 20:23Speaker 3: they put in huge long studs to be able to
- 20:27Speaker 3: get better grip and they like playing on a wet field.
- 20:30Speaker 3: Maybe there's a different cleat, like you said, that– he
- 20:34Speaker 3: could start using because when he's slipping like that, it's
- 20:37Speaker 3: clearly not just physically making his pitches not be able
- 20:42Speaker 3: to be executed as perfectly as he feels like he can,
- 20:46Speaker 3: but it's also what he said mentally. You're like, I'm
- 20:49Speaker 3: kind of second-guessing. Am I going to slip? Do I
- 20:51Speaker 3: know where this is going to be? So, yeah, I'm
- 20:54Speaker 3: sure they're trying a bunch of different stuff.
- 20:56Speaker 2: Yeah, for sure.
- 20:59Speaker 1: Well, they have a month to figure it out. That's
- 21:02Speaker 1: the important part for Milwaukee. They're not playing for nothing, right?
- 21:07Speaker 1: But the division's over.
- 21:09Speaker 2: Okay?
- 21:11Speaker 1: Done. Seeding matters. You need to maintain what you've got. Ideally,
- 21:16Speaker 1: you'd like to have the number one seed. But you
- 21:19Speaker 1: need to figure out what's going on here. Because if
- 21:22Speaker 1: what we saw yesterday happens in October, it could be
- 21:27Speaker 1: the difference of the Brewers advancing in a playoff round.
- 21:31Speaker 1: I mean, this is their guy.
- 21:34Speaker 3: And it can't be the excuse. It can't be the excuse.
- 21:38Speaker 3: It would be like a team going into the first
- 21:40Speaker 3: round of the playoffs and saying, we steal more bases
- 21:43Speaker 3: than any other team. It is the most elite stolen
- 21:47Speaker 3: base team of all time. You know what the team
- 21:50Speaker 3: that you're playing is going to do? They're going to
- 21:52Speaker 3: have that track so wet. It is going to be
- 21:55Speaker 3: so wet running the bases that it's going to slow
- 21:59Speaker 3: you down. Whoa, man, it was so wet. How are
- 22:00Speaker 3: we supposed to? How are we supposed to steal bases? Like, oh,
- 22:05Speaker 3: I'm slipping on every pitch. How am I supposed to
- 22:08Speaker 3: pitch my best? And look, he's slipping at a lot
- 22:11Speaker 3: of these places and he's still going to win the
- 22:14Speaker 3: Cy Young. So he is a freak. It's not that
- 22:17Speaker 3: he's not good enough to get through it. It's when
- 22:20Speaker 3: you're in the playoffs, you can't allow, you can't give
- 22:26Speaker 3: any advantage to the other team to diminish your superpowers.
- 22:30Speaker 3: And right now, I think the Milwaukee Brewers, even though
- 22:34Speaker 3: they score more runs than anybody in the league, win
- 22:37Speaker 3: or lose on Jacob Mizorowski's back.
- 22:43Speaker 1: I have a tactical question for you guys. And this
- 22:48Speaker 1: is going to sound a little bit dirty, but I
- 22:49Speaker 1: just want to throw it out there. How much does
- 22:52Speaker 1: the grounds crew impact all of this? You can obviously
- 22:57Speaker 1: call for the grounds crew to help you out, but
- 22:59Speaker 1: you know how some grounds crews will set up the
- 23:02Speaker 1: infield a certain way for a team that likes to
- 23:04Speaker 1: bunt or a team that wants a hotter infield and
- 23:07Speaker 1: hotter as in the ground balls will fly. Does any
- 23:10Speaker 1: of this apply to a mound when we get to
- 23:12Speaker 1: the playoffs? Is there a conversation that says, Hey, you
- 23:15Speaker 1: can't rig anything, but they're like, Hey, let's make the
- 23:18Speaker 1: mound this way. Cause we got the maze coming and
- 23:20Speaker 1: he slipped.
- 23:24Speaker 2: I don't think so.
- 23:26Speaker 3: Oh, really?
- 23:28Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 23:29Speaker 3: Todd, what was your first year?
- 23:30Speaker 2: Wait, wait, wait.
- 23:32Speaker 4: The only thing I agree with is in front of
- 23:35Speaker 4: home plate, they went in that thing like nobody's business
- 23:38Speaker 4: on a sinker ball or something like that. Other than that,
- 23:40Speaker 4: they're not going to tiptoe with the mound. I think
- 23:44Speaker 4: that's Bush League in my opinion.
- 23:46Speaker 3: Really?
- 23:47Speaker 5: Why?
- 23:49Speaker 4: Because they're trying to get another advantage and all of
- 23:52Speaker 4: a sudden somebody slips and actually hurts themselves.
- 23:54Speaker 2: I don't think that would be very smart.
- 23:56Speaker 3: No, I'm not saying– they're not tinkering with it. They're
- 23:59Speaker 3: not doing anything that's like– they're just not doing the extra.
- 24:04Speaker 3: From what I've heard, the grounds crew in Milwaukee adds
- 24:07Speaker 3: extra clay. When I say extra clay, they just take
- 24:10Speaker 3: it out farther so that he has a solid place
- 24:14Speaker 3: to land. Now when he's going into other places, you
- 24:18Speaker 3: see the grounds crew come out. I think it's been–
- 24:20Speaker 3: the one game it was two or three times the
- 24:21Speaker 3: grounds crew came out in– I want to say Oakland,
- 24:25Speaker 3: but it may have been Anaheim. Don't quote me on that.
- 24:28Speaker 3: They're extending the clay because the part where he's landing
- 24:33Speaker 3: is either too wet or it's not that tacky clay.
- 24:37Speaker 3: So why would– if he goes in to play the Braves,
- 24:39Speaker 3: why would the Braves take a call from Major League
- 24:42Speaker 3: Baseball and be like, hey, Major League Baseball says we're
- 24:45Speaker 3: supposed to extend how far we put our clay out there? Like–
- 24:49Speaker 3: To me, I think it definitely is a gamesmanship. I
- 24:53Speaker 3: don't know if it's Bush League or not. They're not
- 24:56Speaker 3: shortening it because they're like, well, the Miz is coming in,
- 24:59Speaker 3: so we're going to shorten the clay area. I just
- 25:01Speaker 3: don't think they're extending it out. Like, for instance, Derek
- 25:06Speaker 3: Jeter's last year, when we went in to play the Yankees,
- 25:09Speaker 3: the grass in the infield– Because Jeter's range was not
- 25:13Speaker 3: like it was before. The grass in the infield was
- 25:16Speaker 3: like playing on Notre Dame's football field. It was like
- 25:19Speaker 3: this long. And they were like, well, it's because of
- 25:22Speaker 3: all the wear and tear. And you would hit a
- 25:24Speaker 3: ground ball in there and you couldn't get a ground
- 25:27Speaker 3: ball through the infield because it was so thick. So
- 25:31Speaker 3: I think teams would do it.
- 25:33Speaker 1: You're saying they were trying to counter Derek Jeter's lack
- 25:37Speaker 1: of range at that point?
- 25:38Speaker 2: Yes. Yep.
- 25:40Speaker 3: Yes. And so you're making the field conducive to exactly
- 25:45Speaker 3: what you said. Sinker baller. Brandon Webb would come in
- 25:49Speaker 3: with his massive sinker baller. It was like a puddle
- 25:52Speaker 3: in front. Your first hit, you would bang, hit it
- 25:55Speaker 3: right into the dirt. It would go nowhere.
- 26:00Speaker 2: Where.
- 26:01Speaker 3: I remember teams on the Astro turf, Minnesota Twins, Christian Guzman,
- 26:05Speaker 3: he would just go, boom, and the ball would bounce
- 26:07Speaker 3: over the third baseman's head off the turf. I think
- 26:12Speaker 3: it is fully within the realm, and you're asking, does
- 26:15Speaker 3: it happen? I saw pitching coaches tip groundskeepers very well
- 26:23Speaker 3: to manipulate what the field looks like for certain guys' starts.
- 26:28Speaker 2: Wow, I've never heard of that. That's interesting to me.
- 26:33Speaker 2: God bless.
- 26:35Speaker 3: And you're like, Todd's like, wait, what could I have done?
- 26:38Speaker 3: Could I have asked them to mow third base a
- 26:41Speaker 3: little bit longer? Like leave it go a little bit longer?
- 26:45Speaker 3: Slow the ball down a little bit for you? Get
- 26:48Speaker 3: that DRS up a little bit?
- 26:51Speaker 4: I always used to mess with the guys when they
- 26:52Speaker 4: come in between every three innings. Like, yo, man, you
- 26:55Speaker 4: missed a spot here. It'd be like that big.
- 27:02Speaker 2: We would have a few left.
- 27:03Speaker 3: You had the opposite. They were screwing you because... No,
- 27:08Speaker 3: they weren't.
- 27:09Speaker 2: I just didn't. I was not good at third. I
- 27:12Speaker 2: was okay.
- 27:13Speaker 1: All right, let's roll through all of the already fun
- 27:17Speaker 1: that we have here. First of all, there was a
- 27:19Speaker 1: tweet that went viral of somebody who bought tickets for
- 27:23Speaker 1: Dodgers Angels in 2025, and then they were saying they
- 27:26Speaker 1: won't buy any more Angels tickets as long as Artie
- 27:28Speaker 1: Moreno's owner. So one of the ticket reps goes right
- 27:31Speaker 1: after the sale with an email to this person and says, hello,
- 27:34Speaker 1: Artie has officially sold the team. Please let me know
- 27:36Speaker 1: if you'd be interested in attending games in the future.
- 27:38Speaker 1: They're working off commission, Kratz. That's brilliant.
- 27:41Speaker 3: That's brilliant. My guy's on the hustle. He is hustling
- 27:45Speaker 3: to get some extra sales, but... Good for that person.
- 27:49Speaker 3: Whoever sent the email, good for them. They're like, you
- 27:51Speaker 3: know what? Hey, you said this. Now the person's like,
- 27:56Speaker 3: maybe I will come to a game.
- 27:58Speaker 1: I wish the title was Ding Dong, the witch is gone.
- 28:00Speaker 1: Here we go. Come back to the ballpark.
- 28:03Speaker 2: Go for it.
- 28:03Speaker 1: If you're going to go for it, go for it.
- 28:05Speaker 2: Get his attention.
- 28:06Speaker 1: Next up, Danny Vietti pointing out the contracts given out,
- 28:09Speaker 1: the largest ones during Marino's tenure, right? It's not like
- 28:12Speaker 1: he never spent, but 426.5 over 12 years for Trout. Rendon,
- 28:16Speaker 1: 7245 was a buyout. Pujols, 10240, DFA'd. Josh Hamilton, 5125 traded.
- 28:22Speaker 1: 5106 for Upton, released. And then some others below $ 100
- 28:27Speaker 1: million that did not work out too well. Torrey Hunter
- 28:30Speaker 1: was fine. And Weaver had his moment. CJ Wilson got hurt.
- 28:34Speaker 1: That was a while back. Lastly, Joe Pompliano, who we'll
- 28:37Speaker 1: probably talk to a lot this offseason. He's a biz dude,
- 28:40Speaker 1: biz reporter. Posting about what the Angel Stadium lease looks like.
- 28:44Speaker 1: Zero dollars in rent paid annually. $ 415, 000 in net revenue
- 28:49Speaker 1: sharing over 30 years. No right to inspect the stadium
- 28:52Speaker 1: for upkeep and multiple extension options at no additional cost.
- 28:55Speaker 1: Talk about the worst deal of all time. And remember,
- 28:58Speaker 1: Artie Moreno got in trouble for trying to bribe some
- 29:00Speaker 1: past mayor who got in trouble. I mean, the way
- 29:02Speaker 1: that deal looks means to me that someone else was
- 29:05Speaker 1: bribed a long time ago. What is in it for
- 29:07Speaker 1: the city? You own the thing and you don't make
- 29:09Speaker 1: a dime off of it? I don't get it.
- 29:12Speaker 3: It's crazy. 30 years, $ 415, 000. Just so people know, that's
- 29:17Speaker 3: a great deal for Angels ownership. The city of Anaheim
- 29:22Speaker 3: is like, dang it, we're cooked. And I think that
- 29:26Speaker 3: area is an awesome area. So $ 415, 000 in 30 years
- 29:33Speaker 3: is what they've made.
- 29:35Speaker 1: That is wild.
- 29:36Speaker 2: Wow.
- 29:37Speaker 1: That's wild.
- 29:39Speaker 2: That's insane.
- 29:40Speaker 1: Yeah, if you rent it, you don't own it. Yeah,
- 29:43Speaker 1: you pay some rent, millions of dollars. $ 415, 000 for 30 years. Hey,
- 30:04Speaker 1: newsy stuff. Ken said, next homestand, we might get Aaron
- 30:09Speaker 1: Judge back. That was on Fair Territory today, and then
- 30:12Speaker 1: Ken will be on the show on Friday. That's very soon.
- 30:15Speaker 1: That actually gives you a good chunk of time to
- 30:18Speaker 1: get right.
- 30:21Speaker 2: Love that.
- 30:22Speaker 3: Swings in.
- 30:22Speaker 2: Love that. Fingers crossed. Oh, we got video.
- 30:27Speaker 1: Oh, we got video.
- 30:28Speaker 3: This is great for me.
- 30:30Speaker 2: Oh, my God. Look at what they're doing.
- 30:33Speaker 3: Look at all the– we got cameras. We got track man.
- 30:37Speaker 3: We got two rehabbing Yankees. We got– They're in the
- 30:41Speaker 3: mountains right there.
- 30:41Speaker 2: They found a spot in the mountains.
- 30:42Speaker 3: Oh, wait, wait. For people who don't know because they
- 30:49Speaker 3: don't watch games because the team's been irrelevant, oh, that
- 30:51Speaker 3: was Anaheim. What a beautiful backdrop, by the way.
- 30:55Speaker 2: Mm-hmm.
- 30:58Speaker 1: That looks like a movie shoot.
- 30:59Speaker 2: It looked like Judd was snoring in a movie.
- 31:00Speaker 1: I thought it was in one of the.
- 31:01Speaker 2: Spring training games. Yeah. Mm-hmm. Spring training backfield.
- 31:05Speaker 1: Aaron, we're doing a commercial. Actually, just kidding. We're just
- 31:08Speaker 1: tracking our pitchers.
- 31:11Speaker 3: He's going to need those at-bats. He's going to need
- 31:14Speaker 3: those at-bats. You can do track man all you want,
- 31:17Speaker 3: but I bet he's standing in on other people's bullpens too.
- 31:21Speaker 3: Just get that timing. I know I needed that timing.
- 31:24Speaker 3: Very few hitters. I'm still looking for that timing, but
- 31:28Speaker 3: you need it. You need it.
- 31:35Speaker 1: Still here for a few.
- 31:36Speaker 2: Stay awake.
- 31:37Speaker 1: Give me three minutes. Dodgers territory live in three minutes.
- 31:40Speaker 1: And actually, you know what they're going to talk about.
- 31:43Speaker 1: What's up with Otani? So is he going to pitch?
- 31:47Speaker 1: And now he doesn't look right at the plate. They're
- 31:49Speaker 1: definitely going to give him a little blow, a little break.
- 31:52Speaker 1: Is it going to be a couple days? Is it
- 31:55Speaker 1: going to be an IELTS stint? Anything can happen. I
- 31:58Speaker 1: think there's a lot on the table here. Because we've
- 32:01Speaker 1: gotten past the point of, hey, how much of a
- 32:03Speaker 1: factor can he be on the mound in the postseason?
- 32:07Speaker 1: And they still do think he can do that. But
- 32:09Speaker 1: Dave Roberts, this is from Fabi Nardia from The Athletic yesterday.
- 32:13Speaker 1: Doc said he noticed Otani looking off physically, called it
- 32:16Speaker 1: the tip of the iceberg with what he's seen out
- 32:17Speaker 1: of him lately. Said he expects to talk to him tomorrow,
- 32:20Speaker 1: which is today, about how he's feeling and downplayed the
- 32:22Speaker 1: idea of an ILL stint with Shohei. Well, that's also
- 32:27Speaker 1: Kratz because he's going to downplay it. Otani's going to
- 32:29Speaker 1: be like, nah, Trick, I'm not doing that. And Andrew
- 32:32Speaker 1: Friedman said Tuesday he believes Otani is going to pitch
- 32:35Speaker 1: again this season, but no update on when his next
- 32:38Speaker 1: bullpen session will be. And Friedman said, we will get
- 32:42Speaker 1: him in a game at some point.
- 32:43Speaker 2: When?
- 32:43Speaker 1: I don't know exactly yet. And it's not September 20th.
- 32:47Speaker 1: I mean, it's September 3rd.
- 32:52Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 32:53Speaker 2: Interesting.
- 32:56Speaker 3: I see him. I see him. Let's get the guy ready.
- 32:58Speaker 3: to throw an inning as an opener for the playoffs. Like,
- 33:03Speaker 3: that's it. That's the only way it works. There's no
- 33:05Speaker 3: way they stretch him back out to be a full-blown starter,
- 33:09Speaker 3: but maybe he can come back. But, I mean, Dave
- 33:11Speaker 3: Roberts is the guy. He's got to look at his body,
- 33:13Speaker 3: his mannerisms, the way he's walking around, the way he's moving.
- 33:17Speaker 3: He's got to be the one to say, we've got
- 33:19Speaker 3: to sit you down. I don't think Otani wants to
- 33:21Speaker 3: sit down. He wants to be out there.
- 33:23Speaker 2: He needs the offseason quicker than a lot of people.
- 33:26Speaker 1: Mm-mm.
- 33:28Speaker 4: I don't want him to, but I'm saying he needs it.
- 33:32Speaker 3: Everybody's gassed right now. A dude that does everything has
- 33:36Speaker 3: to be gassed.
- 33:37Speaker 4: I got kids that are dying to play fall baseball,
- 33:40Speaker 4: and I told them, no, stop. Go play a different sport, please.
- 33:45Speaker 4: Not big on playing hundreds of games for kids, too, either. Sorry,
- 33:49Speaker 4: Shohei and 12- and 13-year-olds are the same.
- 33:55Speaker 2: They don't get it. You need time off.
