Latest / Mini Scroll / MINI SCROLL: Fishboy vs. 2 million Tinder women, BookTok Kickstarter scandal + Charlotte Tilbury & Huda Kattan influencer drama
Transcript
- 0:00Hi everyone, welcome to Mini Scroll, the daily Internet
- 0:04culture podcast bringing you the biggest stories from social
- 0:07media, the creator economy and the digital space every Monday
- 0:11through Thursday. I'm your host, Lauren Meisner,
- 0:14the founder of the youth digital media brand Centennial World.
- 0:19Welcome back to Mini Scroll, everyone.
- 0:22All right, let's just dive into the stories for today because
- 0:25the stories that I have are kind of big.
- 0:27So the first story that I have for you guys is that a man is
- 0:31going viral all over social media for swiping 2,000,000
- 0:36times on Tinder with only one date over the last five years.
- 0:42This man named Hayden, basically his like failed Tinder
- 0:45experience on Twitter, five years on Tinder and swiped right
- 0:492,000,000 times and got one date.
- 0:51It's time to Thailand Max bro. Then he put a screenshot of his
- 0:57Tinder insights which show he has swiped over 2 2,000,000
- 1:00times. He's had 2053 matches, 1269
- 1:07chats, 1 date, 0 relationships, 0 casual sex.
- 1:12And he also put screenshots of some of his profile.
- 1:15So his photos and stuff like that.
- 1:17So his profile has photos of him for the most part outside and
- 1:22holding fish. He loves being outdoors and
- 1:25being at the lake. And I didn't see this myself,
- 1:29but I saw somebody on TikTok say that his profile also said that
- 1:32he owns 33 snakes. Bro, I don't think you should be
- 1:38advertising that, But OK, I'm going to get into all of this in
- 1:41a minute. So there's been quite a lot of
- 1:44discussion online about what all of this signals.
- 1:47And one of the best takes that I've seen is from a woman named
- 1:50Kath who said that this man has no idea how to market himself to
- 1:55women. And this is a more pervasive
- 1:57problem than just like something that's going on with Hayden.
- 2:00Like women are conditioned and groomed from birth to appeal to
- 2:04men to understand how to market themselves to the male gaze.
- 2:08Because so much of our personhood and our worth is like
- 2:11a society tells us is wrapped up in finding a man and having that
- 2:15male validation and getting married and having children and
- 2:18all of that. Whereas men are taught how to
- 2:22market themselves to other guys. And Jim Bros are such a good
- 2:26example of this. Like women across the board, in
- 2:30surveys, in research studies say that a lot of women like softer
- 2:36male bodies. We know women don't really care
- 2:40if a man is like super super ripped and that's why like dad
- 2:43bods became such a thing, right? But men market themselves based
- 2:48on what they like in other men and they think that women care
- 2:51about those things too. And then the problem goes even
- 2:54deeper because when women tell men these things like what they
- 2:58do and don't like, men tell us that we're lying and we're
- 3:01wrong. I bet if I put this clip up on
- 3:04TikTok right now of me saying that women like softer bodies,
- 3:07we don't care how ripped guys are.
- 3:09The comment section would literally be full flooded with
- 3:12boys and men telling me that I am some vindictive liar.
- 3:16That's just like wanting men to be alone forever.
- 3:18So back to Kath. She suggested that a lot of this
- 3:21has to do with the fact that so many men cannot put themselves
- 3:24in our shoes. Like in any way.
- 3:26They cannot look at women as fully conscious human subjects.
- 3:30They look at us as human objects.
- 3:33And I was like, oh, that was the perfect mostly a succinct way to
- 3:39wrap that up. So case in point with Hayden,
- 3:42back to Hayden, he has taken to the Internet to play victim and
- 3:46claim that something is wrong with women and or Tinder, right?
- 3:50He doesn't seem embarrassed that he has swiped over 2,000,000
- 3:54times and has only gone on one date.
- 3:57He doesn't think that this is his problem, right?
- 4:00But case in .1 of the photos of him on his profile holding a
- 4:04fish red flag. But also, you know, whatever,
- 4:07like we've all gone on dates with men who have been holding
- 4:11fish, OK, in their photos. We don't discriminate that much.
- 4:13It's cringe. It's definitely a bit of a red
- 4:16flag, but it is so common. Like you actually cannot avoid
- 4:19it. I bet you've surveyed every
- 4:20single woman in the world. She would say that she has gone
- 4:22on a date. Every hetero woman, you would
- 4:24find out that she has gone on a date with a man who has a photo
- 4:28of him holding a fish. OK, so he's holding a fish in
- 4:31this pic, but the sweater that he is wearing has the silhouette
- 4:35of a naked woman lying down with like her legs basically open
- 4:39with the letters SITYA so Sitya, and then the words underneath
- 4:46Sitya say ass on my face. So all of this is literally
- 4:51front and center on his Tinder profile while he is swiping for
- 4:55women where they can see what kind of humor, what kind of like
- 4:59sexist, misogynistic humor he has.
- 5:02Wearing a sweater like that so loud and proud is such a crazy
- 5:06red flag. But it gets worse.
- 5:08OK so I actually found that this isn't the first time he's taken
- 5:12this experience to the Internet. In September 2023 he posted on
- 5:16Reddit sharing screenshots of his profile saying he had swiped
- 5:19over 1,000,000 times and wasn't having any success.
- 5:22So he's already complained about this when he was at 1,000,000
- 5:26swipes and now he's at 2,000,000 swipes.
- 5:28In this thread people are like check this Reddit users comments
- 5:32and you will see why he gets no dates.
- 5:34It has nothing to do with what he looks like with probably
- 5:37what's on his profile because if you think about the ratio from
- 5:40like he's getting what was it like 2002 thousand matches to 1
- 5:45date ever. That ratio is crazy.
- 5:48So what is happening in those conversations after he matches
- 5:51with them where women are like like I am not fucking going on a
- 5:55date with this guy. So here's some of the comments
- 5:57that his Reddit profile had. Yes I'm sexist as fuck.
- 6:01I just want to give someone my love but nobody wants it.
- 6:04I'm just too fed up at this point.
- 6:05So many shallow women tell me I'm worthless because of my
- 6:08looks and height. I could guarantee you that is
- 6:11not true. Have you guys seen the meme?
- 6:12That's like every single beautiful woman that I know has
- 6:15the ugliest boyfriend ever. If that is not like so
- 6:18indicative of the fact that like women do not care about what you
- 6:21look like, what? I mean height.
- 6:23OK some women do have a height thing but like what you look
- 6:25like if you have like a ripped body.
- 6:28Like this is stuff that men care about.
- 6:30This is men tell themselves this to make them feel better so they
- 6:34don't have to change and become better people and like change
- 6:37their personality because they fucking suck.
- 6:40OK another comment. Most girls are scumbags and will
- 6:43lie straight to your face and not see the issue.
- 6:45Oh my God. And then people found OK so one
- 6:48of his profile pictures when he had this like 1,000,000 Tinder
- 6:51thing. So this was two years ago.
- 6:53One of his photos was from his high school graduation which was
- 6:55six years prior to that which is weird.
- 6:58This person on Reddit said it looks like 2 years ago when he
- 7:00was 22. He was commenting in R slash
- 7:03teenagers. Men want to complain about the
- 7:07male I'll loneliness epidemic and say women are the reason
- 7:12that they have no sex, that they're so lonely, that they
- 7:15have bad mental health. Please fucking spare us.
- 7:19If you are swiping 2,000,000 times on Tinder and you've gone
- 7:23on one date over the course of five years, look inside.
- 7:27It is your fault 2 million women looked at your profile or had a
- 7:31conversation with you and thought this man is not it.
- 7:36There is a reason for that. You don't need to go to fucking
- 7:38Thailand and inflict your disgusting, sexist,
- 7:43misogynistic, creepy ass vibes on the poor women in Thailand.
- 7:48Fix yourself. Oh my God.
- 7:50OK, let's get on to the next story because I hate this man so
- 7:53much. The next word that I have for
- 7:54you guys. So I know a lot of you guys are
- 7:56part of book talk. If there are things that I've
- 7:58missed in this story or if you have opinions or you're part of
- 8:01this Kickstarter or you know people like I would love to hear
- 8:04in the comments because this is so interesting to me.
- 8:06Britt Andrews is a popular reverse harem author and she is
- 8:10under fire after she raised $95,000 via Kickstarter for
- 8:14special editions of her unfinished book series through
- 8:18social media and has failed to deliver.
- 8:20So she started the Kickstarter in September 2000, 1023 and the
- 8:26goal was $5000 and she raised $95,000.
- 8:29This situation was brought to the attention of users online
- 8:32when a Book Talk creator Randy Nicole Reads posted a video on
- 8:35TikTok about it recently, which got some traction.
- 8:38I'm sorry, what do you mean? An indie author has had $95,000
- 8:44worth of readers money locked up in a Kickstarter from August of
- 8:492023. What do you mean?
- 8:51The book still has not been written?
- 8:54No one has received anything. No one has received refunds,
- 8:58even though said refunds have been requested for months
- 9:02$95,000. There's now been a lot of
- 9:05discussion online about this and it turns out apparently a lot of
- 9:08the people who pledged to Britt's Kickstarter have been
- 9:11requesting their money back for like a year and some have even
- 9:14filed complaints with their banks and then Britt is
- 9:17disputing those claims. This is from a thread from 2024.
- 9:22Somebody said wait, what's going on?
- 9:23I love Britt Andrews and someone responded she did a Kickstarter
- 9:27for a duet and it's totally in shambles for the backers.
- 9:31Long story short, she had a goal of $5000 and surpassed it by
- 9:34about $94,000. Then crickets.
- 9:37Next thing we know she's opening a restaurant which can only be
- 9:41assumed our money funded that venture.
- 9:43Her update in January stated we are still on track for summer
- 9:47fulfillment of boxes slash orders.
- 9:49Sorry I should have specified there were like a bunch of tiers
- 9:51of the Kickstarter so it was like certain books and stuff but
- 9:54then they were also like collabs.
- 9:55So like she was doing a candle collab, which would include like
- 9:58if you pledged to that tier of the Kickstarter, then you would
- 10:01get a candle collab as well as, you know, the special editions.
- 10:05So we're updating. Jan stated we are still on track
- 10:07for a summer fulfillment. Again, if you think about US
- 10:10summer. So right now it's May.
- 10:12So this was like a year ago basically of boxes slash orders,
- 10:16a few months later, personal issues leading to writers block
- 10:19and then the update last night. Long ass diary entry and then
- 10:23until next time. I do believe it is the fact that
- 10:26she launched a restaurant with her sister and made that public
- 10:30that has brought this to the forefront.
- 10:32Because again, as this commenter said, like where did our $95,000
- 10:36go? People really do believe that it
- 10:38went to helping them fund this restaurant.
- 10:40But when you do a Kickstarter, once the pledge period is over,
- 10:44like you can no longer receive money.
- 10:46So even though she said all of this stuff she was doing, the
- 10:50special edition, the candle collabs, whatever, were a
- 10:52Kickstarter exclusive, she actually started a Jot forum
- 10:57where she is raising money again for basically the same stuff.
- 11:01I guess people are like, I thought that everything that was
- 11:04like said on the Kickstarter was like a Kickstarter exclusive.
- 11:07Like surely this is a breach of contract.
- 11:08Like give us our fucking money back.
- 11:10There are some people who did receive their money back.
- 11:13I saw somebody on Reddit say they were one of the few like
- 11:15lucky ones that did get their money back last year when it
- 11:17first kicked off and there were some high profile people
- 11:20complaining. And so she did like a round of
- 11:22refunds to people that had complained.
- 11:24And this person was like, I was just like in that round luckily.
- 11:27But since then, it doesn't seem like most people have received
- 11:30any refunds. But back to the candle collab.
- 11:33So this candle collab, it was a $35 tier with Bright Side
- 11:37Candle. So you would get a candle as
- 11:39well as whatever else was part of the Kickstarter.
- 11:41And once all this started kicking off, Bright Side Candles
- 11:45made an announcement that they are not working with her
- 11:48anymore. They said.
- 11:49We've recently become aware that the Kickstarter campaign
- 11:51launched by Britt Andrews in 2023, which included the Bright
- 11:54Side candles as an add on tier has not been fulfilled.
- 11:57Like many of you, we were excited to support this project
- 12:00and looked forward to contributing something special
- 12:02to the experience. However, we want to clarify a
- 12:05few important details. We were never provided product
- 12:07details, shipping lists or compensation to begin
- 12:10production. No candles were ever made or
- 12:13delivered by us for this campaign.
- 12:16We, like many of you, pledged in good faith and hoped this would
- 12:19be a positive collaboration. So again, people are like, OK,
- 12:22so I've paid $35 for this candle plus, you know, whatever else is
- 12:27going to happen with the Kickstarter.
- 12:29And now they're saying like, we're not doing this collab with
- 12:31you anymore. Where the fuck is my money?
- 12:33Like, what am I going to get now for pledging $35 if I'm not
- 12:37going to get this candle? OK I'm going to read some
- 12:39comments from read it about this.
- 12:42So somebody says I'm low key livid about it and I bought one
- 12:47of the smaller tiers. She has a clear pattern.
- 12:49Basically ghost the Kickstarter and all of her social media for
- 12:52months. Pop up with an update that
- 12:54things are hard and she's working on it.
- 12:56Sit back and watch as her fans tear anyone up who speaks up.
- 13:00Rinse and repeat. It's this Kickstarter, a special
- 13:03edition Emerald Lakes and pre-order signed books that were
- 13:06for a book con. Maybe other things too.
- 13:09And I get it, I really do. Sometimes life throws so many
- 13:12bricks at you it's impossible to stand.
- 13:14But you took nearly $100,000 of people's money.
- 13:17The very least you can do is show any kind of proof that you
- 13:19are working on the project. Yeah, I think that's exactly it
- 13:22is like of course things happen. Your mental health can go
- 13:25downhill. Life happens if you can't
- 13:28fulfill the work that you are required there to do.
- 13:31People have spent so much money on you, then you have to just
- 13:34say, I'm really sorry. I'm in over my head.
- 13:36I cannot complete this and refund everybody.
- 13:40And I think that's one of the problems with Kickstarter is
- 13:42that they don't have to have a specific date on when everything
- 13:46has to be delivered. So that's part of this problem
- 13:49is people are like, OK, well, you know, she can just keep
- 13:51posting these updates. So her most recent update was
- 13:54May 14th. And she basically said that like
- 13:56she's struggling and stuff but that she's still working on it.
- 13:59And so it's like, yeah, she could just say this though for
- 14:02the next like 5 plus years, you know, like for as long as she
- 14:06wants in theory. There's also a lot of people
- 14:08that say they've had other shady situations with her.
- 14:11Like somebody said, no joke, I want to give away on her
- 14:14Facebook page years ago and got the runaround over and over
- 14:17again until almost three months down the road I get cussed out
- 14:20by not only her friend but her and her mod for daring to
- 14:23question them. Someone else wrote.
- 14:25She's also known for signing up to conventions, getting
- 14:28pre-orders and either canceling last minute or not showing up.
- 14:31She's banned from Beventi. Yeah, Beventi.
- 14:34I don't know what that is, but I'm assuming it's the convention
- 14:36due to this. But yeah, that's basically a
- 14:38very high level recap of what's happening with book talk.
- 14:41And this author, like I said, she did post something on May
- 14:4614th and just kind of said like, here's what I'm going through
- 14:50and like, sorry, essentially, but I'm still going to do it.
- 14:53So I guess we'll see. But I feel really bad for all of
- 14:55her fans that have paid their money.
- 14:57I cannot handle when people scam their followers, their fans.
- 15:02I think it's so disgusting because that is people's like,
- 15:04own personal money. It just feels so fucked up when
- 15:07it's people's like, actual money, especially in this
- 15:10economy. Like, no, we can't even waste
- 15:13like $5 on this economy, OK? Like, things are not well.
- 15:16OK. The last word that I have for
- 15:17you guys is there is some drama right now in kind of like the
- 15:21influencer marketing space between Charlotte Tilbury and
- 15:25Huda Katan. So this started because a TikTok
- 15:28creator made a comparison person video of Charlotte Tilbury's
- 15:32setting spray and Huda Beauty's easy bake setting spray.
- 15:35And the premise of this video was basically testing like quote
- 15:38the strongest setting spray ever.
- 15:41In the documents online, the influencer is not named.
- 15:44But if you search on TikTok, there is a video with a lot of
- 15:47views that comes up literally right away.
- 15:49And it is by a creator named Alexandra.
- 15:52And in it, she swatches makeup on the back of her hand and then
- 15:55sprays it with one of the setting sprays and shows how
- 15:58easily it wipes off or it doesn't wipe off.
- 16:01And in the video, the Huda Beauty makeup setting spray
- 16:05didn't wipe off. And in the Charlotte Tilbury
- 16:08one, she said it with the setting spray and it did still
- 16:11smudge. So that video was from March.
- 16:15It was from a while ago. Huda Beauty posted this on their
- 16:18Instagram page. So they saw the video on TikTok
- 16:20obviously and reposted it on their Instagram.
- 16:23Charlotte Tilbury didn't appreciate this repost.
- 16:26She reported it to the better Bureau's national advertising
- 16:30division or NAD Huda Beauty took the post down after this report
- 16:36and then Huda Katan herself went to the creator's page.
- 16:39So this creator, Alexandra, I assume it's her again, don't
- 16:42know, but I assume it's her, posted it on TikTok and then she
- 16:44reposted on her Instagram as well.
- 16:46So Huda herself went to the Instagram page of this creator
- 16:52on that video and said like thank you for this video.
- 16:55Like we love it, but we had to take our repost down because of
- 16:59Charlotte Tilbury. Okay, so keep in mind this was
- 17:02not a paid influencer post. I guess the creator apparently
- 17:06has received PR from Huda Beauty and the setting spray has been
- 17:11in that PR at some point, but this was not like a paid post,
- 17:15right? So that does make things a
- 17:17little bit murky here. According to the NAD, which
- 17:20claims that when a creator and a brand have a long standing
- 17:23informal relationship, even if there was number compensation
- 17:27for that specific post, the advertiser must sometimes like
- 17:31comply by certain regulations and basically just like keep an
- 17:34eye on the creators that they're sending PR to and stuff and
- 17:37making sure that everything's like a bit above board.
- 17:39And so I guess because who to remove the post and commented on
- 17:42the creators post, the NAD has dropped the complaint.
- 17:45OK, but you guys, this is crazy. This is crazy.
- 17:51This was not like a campaign. This was not a paid post.
- 17:55Like this was literally just like a regular creator doing a
- 17:58comparison video. How many of those videos have we
- 18:00seen over the years? Like those were bread and butter
- 18:03of early beauty YouTube comparing different viral
- 18:06products or different products that were like, you know,
- 18:09similar from different brands and stuff.
- 18:10Like it's so wild that Charlotte Tilbury was trying to like
- 18:13basically control the narrative around her brand.
- 18:16This much like you cannot control if an influencer posts a
- 18:20native tutorial product review, any type of comparison video.
- 18:26Like it's not your fault that this video allegedly showed that
- 18:32Huda beauty setting powder or setting spray works better than
- 18:35yours. You can't control that.
- 18:37Was it a bit shady for Huda to repost it because it obviously
- 18:41showed the brands in it? Like I don't know maybe?
- 18:43But to file a formal complaint is insane.
- 18:48That is so far, it's literally just business.
- 18:52And to drag this influencer into that, like, I feel so bad.
- 18:56I'm glad that none of this had anything to do with her.
- 18:59But you know, if creators start to be concerned about posting
- 19:03content like this because they're worried about their
- 19:05content getting flagged or getting like official complaints
- 19:08drawn against their content, like that's going to be even
- 19:11worse for these brands. So yeah, it's it's it's kind of
- 19:16wild that this happened. I don't think anything's going
- 19:19to go any further, but it's a little bit of insight into
- 19:22influencer marketing beauty tea for you guys.
- 19:25All right, that is it for today. Thank you so much for listening.
