Latest / Early Edition with Ryan Bridge / Ryan Bridge: To Health NZ's new commissioner - Good luck, I think you'll need it
Transcript
- 0:00Speaker 1: The press conference yesterday for Health New Zealand. Boy oh boy,
- 0:03Speaker 1: what a doozy. So they've appointed Lester lev as the commissioner.
- 0:07Speaker 1: The CEO, Margie Arper was there alongside him. She's been
- 0:11Speaker 1: in the job two years. That's how long the organization's
- 0:14Speaker 1: been set up for. And they're over spending one hundred
- 0:17Speaker 1: and thirty million dollars a month. We know that that
- 0:19Speaker 1: can be nothing more than mismanagement. If you take Levy's
- 0:22Speaker 1: word for it, he says they don't need more money.
- 0:25Speaker 1: They basically just don't know how to spend efficiently within
- 0:29Speaker 1: the organization as it stands. So I mean that's mismanagement,
- 0:33Speaker 1: short and simple, start to finish. And the whole thing
- 0:35Speaker 1: for me was a farce. They said, we need to
- 0:37Speaker 1: push into the regions. That's where the decision making is made.
- 0:41Speaker 1: What isn't it that what we said we didn't need.
- 0:44Speaker 1: We needed more centralization, we needed a national service. And
- 0:47Speaker 1: now we're going out to the regions again, apparently hiring
- 0:51Speaker 1: four regional czars. Why did we spend all this money
- 0:54Speaker 1: to set this organization up? It's so frustrating to listen to.
- 0:58Speaker 1: They also said we never going to achieve the proper
- 1:01Speaker 1: transition from the DHBs to this new organization in two years?
- 1:05Speaker 1: Are you serious? Imagine a private business changing its operating
- 1:10Speaker 1: model and two years in saying, oh, the change hasn't worked,
- 1:13Speaker 1: but it's still early days. It just wouldn't happen. And
- 1:16Speaker 1: then there was this Levy who sits on a whole
- 1:18Speaker 1: bunch of boards and knows what he's talking about, casually
- 1:22Speaker 1: said that their spending controls and checks and balances are
- 1:26Speaker 1: not up to scratch.
- 1:27Speaker 2: Internal and management controls are much weaker than I would
- 1:30Speaker 2: have expected. So we have spending problems all over the show.
- 1:34Speaker 1: What an absolute cluster. I hate to be negative, I
- 1:38Speaker 1: really do. I know it's early in the morning. I
- 1:40Speaker 1: hate to be negative, but I just lost all the
- 1:42Speaker 1: will to live yesterday. Just a simple we request from me.
- 1:47Speaker 1: Let's make sure that when we appoint boards and executives
- 1:49Speaker 1: that they actually know what they're doing. They can read
- 1:52Speaker 1: a spreadsheet. Good luck, Lester, I think you'll need it.
