- 0:00Hello everyone, and welcome back to the Letterbox podcast, the

- 0:10someone to hear. If you're joining us for the
- 0:14first time, thank you for being here.
- 0:17And if you're one of our regular listeners, welcome home.
- 0:23Today's letter is a little different.
- 0:26Mary, the writer, has directed her words to politicians past
- 0:30and present. The letter you're about to hear
- 0:32is both deeply personal and profoundly important.
- 0:37It tells the story of her son Daniel, whose life changed
- 0:41forever after a tragic medical event in childhood, and of the
- 0:4444 years she has spent loving and caring for him.
- 0:50It's also the story of millions of underpaid carers who quietly
- 0:54hold families, communities and our society together at an
- 0:57enormous personal cost. Mary has recently launched A
- 1:02petition calling for meaningful change for unpaid carers.
- 1:05The link to her Instagram page where you'll find the petition
- 1:09is in the show notes. If after hearing her words, you
- 1:14feel moved to do so, we will be so grateful if you would
- 1:17consider signing it. It's a simple action that could
- 1:20help amplify a voice that deserves to be heard.
- 1:24Before I read you Mary's letter, I also need your help to help
- 1:28more people find out about the podcast and hear these letters.
- 1:32So please press the follow button, whatever you are
- 1:34listening, and then share your favourite episode with someone
- 1:38who you think might like to listen.
- 1:41And now, with gratitude to Mary for her story and for doing all
- 1:45she can to raise awareness, let's read today's letter to
- 1:54every politician, past and present, who could have made a
- 1:58difference but has chosen to ignore the plight of unpaid
- 2:03carers. My son Daniel was born a healthy
- 2:08£9. He was my first baby.
- 2:13I was just 19 when he was born. When he was about nine months
- 2:18old he started losing weight. I was told he was just a fatty
- 2:23feeder and I was being an anxious first time mum.
- 2:27I was sent away from both health visitors and later my then GP's
- 2:31office with the same conclusion but both were wrong.
- 2:37Just after Daniel's first birthday I decided to override
- 2:41these so-called experts and took him to A&E.
- 2:45After five days in hospital his legs stopped working and a mast
- 2:48was found in his abdomen. A biopsy was carried out and
- 2:52they found a neuroblastoma, childhood cancer.
- 2:57This would have been bad enough but he suffered lack of oxygen
- 3:01while they were doing the biopsy and he was severely brain
- 3:04damaged. But our lives changed that day.
- 3:09Daniel was changed beyond recognition.
- 3:12He could no longer even suck a bottle.
- 3:15His body was stiff as a board and contorted due to
- 3:17convulsions. He couldn't move any part of him
- 3:21voluntarily. We had an uphill battle but with
- 3:25hours, weeks, months and years of physio we now have a 44 year
- 3:32old man who can bum shuffle around the floor independently.
- 3:36A man who can talk incessantly. Mostly it's repetitive and a bit
- 3:42hard to understand but it's always funny and mostly rude.
- 3:46He is such a character, everybody loves him and he's a
- 3:51big hit at the day centre he attends near our home in
- 3:54Enfield. They told us Daniel was blind
- 3:59six weeks after they brain damaged him.
- 4:02I was heartbroken for him and us.
- 4:04He uses a wheelchair while at the centre but at home we have
- 4:08clear pathways so he can bum shuffle from his room to the
- 4:11sitting room. So he has choice where he wants
- 4:14to be. He's not safe to leave alone and
- 4:18I'm on duty all night for any personal care he might need.
- 4:23I care for 138 hours a week. The only time Daniel is out of
- 4:31my care is the 30 hours when he goes to the day centre.
- 4:36That's hours of 395 jobs. Karen's allowance is 86 lbs and
- 4:4345 PA week. Break that down into an hourly
- 4:47pay for what I do. It's 63 P.
- 4:51You people can't call it a wage because then you'd have to at
- 4:55least pay the national living wage.
- 4:58The second I try to earn more than £204.00 a week, no matter
- 5:03how I do that, EG making stuff to sell on Etsy or holding a 2
- 5:07hour painting class, DWP will strip me of my entire carer's
- 5:12allowance. This effective pay drops a wage
- 5:16of 205 lbs to 118 lbs and 55 pence.
- 5:22Why do you want to keep us in poverty?
- 5:26This hasn't come about by accident.
- 5:29Somebody designed it this way. What kind of person does that?
- 5:37No other benefit has this Cliff edge.
- 5:41PIP has no limit at all. Disabled people can earn any
- 5:47salary and keep their PIP and rightly so.
- 5:53No other workforce is limited like us.
- 5:56Care as to how much we can earn? Did you know that when I get my
- 6:00state pension in two years again my parents allowance will be
- 6:05stripped away from me even though as before I will still be
- 6:09caring. 138 hours a week huh? You didn't know?
- 6:15Well shame on you. You should know US unpaid carers
- 6:22save the UK taxpayer £185 billion a year.
- 6:30That's another NHS. I can't understand how anyone
- 6:36thinks it is right or fair to treat us with such disdain.
- 6:40You all can go and get second and third jobs.
- 6:44Nobody is taking away from you except for tax.
- 6:48You call carer's allowance a basic benefit and tell me you
- 6:53can't have two basic benefits, State pension being another.
- 6:59Why don't you just change the category these benefits sit in
- 7:02and then we won't be quits out when we try to get ahead.
- 7:08We are undervalued, under appreciated and not recognise as
- 7:15assets to the economic or social workforce.
- 7:21Please do the decent thing and when my government petition gets
- 7:28100,000 signatures and gets in front of the House for debate,
- 7:32please vote to change the model it currently uses.
- 7:37This one is not fit for purpose in 2026.
- 7:44Sincerely, Mary Gryphon Porter, Mary, thank you.
- 7:53Thank you for your courage, for your honesty and allowing us to
- 7:56share not only your experience but your unwaving love for
- 8:00Daniel. Your letter is reminded that
- 8:03behind every statistic is a family, a lifetime of sacrifices
- 8:08and her letter directed to politicians to serves to be
- 8:12seen. If her words resonated with you
- 8:16today, please do visit Mary's page in the show notes.
- 8:19It will also be linked on our Instagram page and you'll sign
- 8:22the petition she mentioned in her letter.
- 8:24If you're able to, please do consider signing it.
- 8:28When I last spoke to Mary, she had just over 1300 signatures.
- 8:33She has until the end of October to reach 100,000.
- 8:39She also told me that of the petitions that actually get
- 8:43through, she thought it might be 0.1 that actually get actioned
- 8:47and those are the ones that have well over 100,000 signatures.
- 8:53If you're able to, please consider signing it.
- 8:57Every signature is another person saying we've heard you
- 9:01and we believe this matters. Thank you for spending time with
- 9:06us and with Mary's story. Your willingness to listen is
- 9:09what gives these letters life beyond the page.
- 9:13Until next time, take care of yourselves, take care of one
- 9:18another, and keep finding the courage to say the things that
- 9:22matter.
