- 0:00Speaker 1: I know him, I know this person. They get closer,
- 0:04Speaker 1: but at the same time I'm gasping for that. I'm like,
- 0:08Speaker 1: I'm dying. I'm literally dying on the spot. They get closer,
- 0:13Speaker 1: they see me, takes me into his arms. Paramedics come,
- 0:16Speaker 1: and you need to know that. When the paramedics left
- 0:20Speaker 1: the spot, and again I'm this fast forward.
- 0:23Speaker 2: When they left the spot, he asked them, and.
- 0:25Speaker 1: This is a movie kind of thing, like they're they're
- 0:28Speaker 1: in the back of the ambulance.
- 0:30Speaker 2: They look back. He asked them, like this guy is
- 0:33Speaker 2: gonna make it.
- 0:35Speaker 1: They're like, no, No, at that moment, I was already
- 0:41Speaker 1: supposed to die.
- 0:42Speaker 3: Yes, were you conscious at that time?
- 0:45Speaker 4: This is Wake Up with Marcy, a space for honest
- 0:48Speaker 4: conversations about healing, recovery, and women's wellness. I'm Marcy Hopkins.
- 0:53Speaker 4: Take a breath, You're safe here.
- 0:56Speaker 3: Let's begin.
- 1:00Speaker 4: What if everything you believed about your life changed in
- 1:03Speaker 4: a single moment. One day you're making plans, you're building
- 1:07Speaker 4: your future, living life at full speed, and the next you.
- 1:12Speaker 3: Are fighting to survive.
- 1:14Speaker 4: What do you do when you're told there's almost no
- 1:18Speaker 4: chance that you'll make it. Do you give up? Or
- 1:21Speaker 4: do you rebuild. Today's conversation is about rebuilding. About my guest, Vincent,
- 1:29Speaker 4: being told he only had a one percent chance to live,
- 1:34Speaker 4: and he chose to live and to rebuild. So today
- 1:38Speaker 4: we're going to learn about that resilience and that purpose
- 1:41Speaker 4: and discovering that sometimes the life that you've never planned
- 1:46Speaker 4: becomes the one you're most grateful to live. So if
- 1:49Speaker 4: you've ever felt like you've been knocked down, if you've
- 1:52Speaker 4: ever wondered if it's too late to start over, then
- 1:56Speaker 4: this episode is for you.
- 1:59Speaker 3: Welcome all to wake up with Marcy.
- 2:01Speaker 4: I'm so grateful you are back, and if you are
- 2:03Speaker 4: new here, welcome. I am always so appreciative to all
- 2:08Speaker 4: of you that are listening or watching.
- 2:10Speaker 3: I'm Marcy Hopkins. I'm your host.
- 2:13Speaker 4: I am an author, TV host, motivational speaker, mental health advocate, and.
- 2:18Speaker 3: I am also in long term recovery.
- 2:21Speaker 4: On this show, we have honest, raw conversations about mental health, healing,
- 2:27Speaker 4: self discovery, and what it really takes to rebuild your life.
- 2:31Speaker 4: And today's guest reminds us that life can change in
- 2:35Speaker 4: an instant. The question isn't whether we'll face adversity, The
- 2:39Speaker 4: question is who do we become because of it. Today
- 2:44Speaker 4: we will meet Vincent van Denbrook. Vincent is an entrepreneur,
- 2:49Speaker 4: founder of the Uid Club, podcast host, and the author
- 2:53Speaker 4: of the upcoming book Everything Feels Impossible until It's Done.
- 2:58Speaker 4: After surviving a near fatal accident that left him with
- 3:02Speaker 4: just one percent chance of survival, Vincent faced the unimaginable
- 3:06Speaker 4: challenge of rebuilding not only his body but his entire life. Today,
- 3:11Speaker 4: he's helping people to stop living on autopilot and start
- 3:15Speaker 4: intentionally designing lives built on purpose, resilience, health, meaningful relationships,
- 3:21Speaker 4: and financial freedom. Now, let's welcome Vincent to the show
- 3:26Speaker 4: and welcome to Wake Up with Marci.
- 3:29Speaker 2: Thank you for having me for real.
- 3:31Speaker 4: I'm grateful that you were here and you had a
- 3:35Speaker 4: life changing experience on October eleventh, twenty twenty four. Everything
- 3:42Speaker 4: changed for you. So what do you remember about that day?
- 3:47Speaker 4: What happened.
- 3:50Speaker 2: About that day? Everything?
- 3:53Speaker 1: But the most important thing I remember in the morning,
- 3:57Speaker 1: getting back to from my wife working during the day,
- 4:01Speaker 1: being at a carring event that we did with the
- 4:03Speaker 1: business with my wife, leaving from that event to go
- 4:08Speaker 1: finish an important file, and that's it, and that's it,
- 4:12Speaker 1: and then afterwards it on my way to the place
- 4:16Speaker 1: I was gonna send the file.
- 4:19Speaker 2: I got her bike.
- 4:20Speaker 3: Car and d is that correct?
- 4:24Speaker 1: An eascouter and like the you know a school thing, Yeah,
- 4:29Speaker 1: scool thing, not like it's not a scooter. Like it's
- 4:32Speaker 1: like an e school you know, the thing that you
- 4:36Speaker 1: like you push with your feet and then you go
- 4:39Speaker 1: and like how do you say it in English? I
- 4:43Speaker 1: think it's an eacuder.
- 4:45Speaker 3: You're not sitting down, you're standing up, okay.
- 4:48Speaker 2: Yeah, and then the thing moves forward.
- 4:51Speaker 1: Okay, I might something that that's called an EA scooter
- 4:56Speaker 1: by the way.
- 4:57Speaker 4: Okay, So but what happened? So you were traveling and
- 5:04Speaker 4: someone hit you with their car? What happened they from behind?
- 5:10Speaker 4: And what happened? Like what was the next thing you remember?
- 5:15Speaker 2: So you have to know.
- 5:16Speaker 1: So in Brussels we have shared EA scudas which he
- 5:21Speaker 1: can only stop at certain spots in the city. In
- 5:25Speaker 1: front of the Hucks and the hotel I was going
- 5:28Speaker 1: to is when you look at the hotel, it's on
- 5:31Speaker 1: the right side. So I was driving on the right side.
- 5:35Speaker 1: I crossed the street this way and what happened is
- 5:39Speaker 1: a car came driving by from the other way and
- 5:43Speaker 1: so I was supposed to give priority to the car.
- 5:48Speaker 1: But what I learned afterwards is the car hit me
- 5:53Speaker 1: with a breaking speed of fifty five kilometers an hour
- 5:56Speaker 1: in a thirty zone, which means that he was probably
- 6:01Speaker 1: driving at ninety one hundred, which is pretty fast. And
- 6:07Speaker 1: also because when I was already conscious and pretty awake,
- 6:13Speaker 1: like getting more and more to being me, I was
- 6:18Speaker 1: like thinking, impossible that I see a car coming to
- 6:22Speaker 1: me at a certain speed and I just stay.
- 6:27Speaker 2: Yeah, and I and.
- 6:29Speaker 1: I just freeze, and possibly because I've always had good reflexes.
- 6:33Speaker 2: Yeah, and then also.
- 6:36Speaker 4: The danger coming to you, and that's one of the
- 6:39Speaker 4: things that we do.
- 6:40Speaker 3: We can freeze.
- 6:42Speaker 2: No no, no, wait, no no. That was the thing I
- 6:44Speaker 2: was asking myself.
- 6:46Speaker 1: I do not have any memories of seeing him come
- 6:50Speaker 1: in my way.
- 6:52Speaker 2: And then also the.
- 6:53Speaker 1: Expert wrote down in her report that the accident was inevitable,
- 6:59Speaker 1: he came driving so fast. And then another fun fact
- 7:06Speaker 1: is the driver in itself at the moment then I
- 7:09Speaker 1: have his driver's license, it already had been taken away
- 7:12Speaker 1: from him. So the moment that he so, the moment
- 7:16Speaker 1: that it hit me driving way too fast, it did
- 7:19Speaker 1: not even have his driver's license, and so that's where
- 7:22Speaker 1: it gets disgusting.
- 7:23Speaker 2: So what happens is I fall.
- 7:26Speaker 1: On the front window on the roof, and then the
- 7:30Speaker 1: person that found me, which is another long story, found
- 7:33Speaker 1: me eleven meters further than a car eleven.
- 7:35Speaker 2: Meters, so you had been thrown. I had thrown and
- 7:39Speaker 2: the things. I wasn't wearing any helmets.
- 7:41Speaker 1: And what happened is I fell on my head first thing, oh,
- 7:48Speaker 1: skull open, suffocating on the spot. Yeah, it was, if
- 7:54Speaker 1: I have to believe again, people that found me, it
- 7:58Speaker 1: was disgusting to see.
- 8:00Speaker 3: Oh my god, what a blessing they found you? And
- 8:03Speaker 3: were you Were you in a ditch? Were you hidden?
- 8:05Speaker 3: Is that why it was difficult to find me?
- 8:09Speaker 1: Oh no, no at all. That's that's another funny, crazy story.
- 8:13Speaker 1: So you need to know that my accountant since a
- 8:19Speaker 1: couple of years already. So he's on his way to
- 8:23Speaker 1: his aunt who lives in the center of Brussels, and
- 8:27Speaker 1: he takes a route that he never takes usually mm hmmm,
- 8:32Speaker 1: from Afar so and at the same time, his cousin
- 8:37Speaker 1: who worked with us as a student back then, was
- 8:40Speaker 1: sitting next to him, and from Afar he sees a
- 8:43Speaker 1: couple of Cosmede two cars. I think making new terms,
- 8:46Speaker 1: few terms. He gets closer, he sees a person laying
- 8:53Speaker 1: on the floor on on the on the street, and
- 8:57Speaker 1: he's like he's he's looking at like, how come there's
- 9:02Speaker 1: a person in danger and these guys are making YouTube.
- 9:05Speaker 2: So they stop the car.
- 9:07Speaker 1: They get out of the car, and you need to
- 9:09Speaker 1: know that since my sixteen years old, I've been wearing
- 9:15Speaker 1: Nike Air Forces white every single day, like I have
- 9:19Speaker 1: hairs of them at home.
- 9:22Speaker 2: They get out of the car.
- 9:23Speaker 1: They walk closer to the person laying on the floor,
- 9:26Speaker 1: and they see the person is wearing Nike air Force White,
- 9:31Speaker 1: and so my kind of has like this feel like
- 9:36Speaker 1: I know him, I know this person. They get closer,
- 9:40Speaker 1: but at the same time I'm gasping for that.
- 9:43Speaker 2: I'm like I'm dying.
- 9:46Speaker 1: I'm literally dying on the spot. They get closer, they
- 9:49Speaker 1: see spin. He takes me, he takes me into his arms.
- 9:54Speaker 1: Paramedics come, and you need to know that when the
- 9:57Speaker 1: paramedics left the spot, and again, uh this fast forward.
- 10:02Speaker 1: When they left the spot, he asked them and this
- 10:06Speaker 1: is a movie kind of thing, like they're there in
- 10:08Speaker 1: the back of the the ambulance.
- 10:11Speaker 2: They look back. He asked them, like, is this guy's
- 10:14Speaker 2: gonna make it?
- 10:16Speaker 1: Like no, no, so at that at that moment, I
- 10:23Speaker 1: was already supposed to die.
- 10:25Speaker 3: Yes, were you conscious at that time? Or this is
- 10:28Speaker 3: something they shared with you?
- 10:30Speaker 2: Now they all shared, They all shared this.
- 10:32Speaker 4: For me, I think it's incredible, your accountant, it must
- 10:37Speaker 4: be pretty interesting to hear the story of why he
- 10:40Speaker 4: went that way, right, because I believe in the higher power,
- 10:44Speaker 4: and there's no mistakes that he was sent there to
- 10:47Speaker 4: save you. But what's so incredible is that you were
- 10:53Speaker 4: given a one percent chance to live?
- 10:58Speaker 3: Is that correct?
- 10:59Speaker 2: To at least live the way I'm talking to right now?
- 11:04Speaker 1: Like the the percentages were like one of one out
- 11:08Speaker 1: of a ten survives these kind of accidents, and then
- 11:14Speaker 1: of that one out of a ten, only one out
- 11:17Speaker 1: of a ten survives the way I did without any
- 11:21Speaker 1: I major damages.
- 11:22Speaker 2: Like yeah, if you look at me.
- 11:26Speaker 4: Put open and you But were you in a coma
- 11:31Speaker 4: for any amount of time?
- 11:32Speaker 2: Three weeks?
- 11:34Speaker 3: Three weeks?
- 11:35Speaker 4: So you wake up and what happens, like what happened
- 11:39Speaker 4: when you came to and do you remember anything when
- 11:42Speaker 4: you were in the coma?
- 11:44Speaker 2: Nothing?
- 11:45Speaker 1: Nothing, Unfortunately, apparently that's the thing too, but unfortunately I
- 11:50Speaker 1: did not have that opportunity.
- 11:52Speaker 2: I was just sleeping for three weeks.
- 11:54Speaker 4: You out, yeah, yeah, you you were recovering right, your
- 11:59Speaker 4: brain with your brain, your body were healing.
- 12:01Speaker 3: So what happened? You awoke and was your wife next
- 12:06Speaker 3: to you? What happened?
- 12:08Speaker 1: The things what I tell people a lot is the
- 12:12Speaker 1: coma in itself took three weeks, but it was like
- 12:16Speaker 1: five weeks were taken away from you because those first
- 12:19Speaker 1: two weeks after me waking up, I was in a
- 12:21Speaker 1: bad place, very few memories. I hallucinated a couple of times,
- 12:28Speaker 1: and then there was also this This is also a
- 12:31Speaker 1: funny story, So you need to know that the day
- 12:34Speaker 1: of the accident itself, was supposed to call my best friend,
- 12:38Speaker 1: who was back then living in New York about the
- 12:41Speaker 1: business I had to call him, which of course then
- 12:45Speaker 1: didn't happen. In that first week, when after I woke up,
- 12:49Speaker 1: my wife called him on FaceTime. I completely forgot this.
- 12:53Speaker 1: He reminded me of it months after. We're already in
- 12:59Speaker 1: twenty twenty five, so last year he reminded me of
- 13:01Speaker 1: this story, and so when we were calling I looked
- 13:05Speaker 1: at him and said, oh, bro, I'm so sorry I
- 13:07Speaker 1: didn't call you. But I was a bit busy, so
- 13:10Speaker 1: I never realized how bad this situation for me. There
- 13:14Speaker 1: was a couple of days that passed while it was
- 13:17Speaker 1: three weeks. There's this crazy thing about how the brain
- 13:20Speaker 1: works and what the brain.
- 13:22Speaker 2: Is capable of, and I think that's also what.
- 13:25Speaker 1: Made me, what made me recover the way I recovered,
- 13:30Speaker 1: like the delusional part of not being conscious about how
- 13:35Speaker 1: serious this situation because need to know, like after me
- 13:39Speaker 1: waking up, I wasn't able to talk, I wasn't able
- 13:44Speaker 1: to walk by myself. I wasn't able my wife had
- 13:48Speaker 1: to wash me. My wife, I wasn't able to eat.
- 13:53Speaker 1: So everything I had.
- 13:54Speaker 2: To relearn again.
- 13:55Speaker 1: But for me, it was like, come in a bad place,
- 13:58Speaker 1: but let's do this.
- 14:00Speaker 3: What was it like depending on somebody else for everything?
- 14:04Speaker 2: The worst that was.
- 14:07Speaker 1: Now, literally, Marci, literally the worst for someone that has
- 14:15Speaker 1: always been not only the fact about being independent, but
- 14:20Speaker 1: just being proud of being independent.
- 14:24Speaker 3: Death.
- 14:26Speaker 1: I cannot even I could not even go back to
- 14:30Speaker 1: the way I was feeling. But I was in a
- 14:33Speaker 1: bad place. I was complaining all the time. Everything was
- 14:38Speaker 1: too much. I was so.
- 14:41Speaker 2: Not patient. I was, I was delusional, I was.
- 14:47Speaker 5: Using excuses and and at the same time, there was
- 14:53Speaker 5: super funny situations and we even talked about it, my
- 14:57Speaker 5: wife and I a couple of days ago, like when
- 14:59Speaker 5: she was washing in the world, a couple of funny
- 15:02Speaker 5: things that happened.
- 15:03Speaker 1: But I can tell you, when you're thirty two years
- 15:06Speaker 1: young and your own wife needs to literally with a
- 15:11Speaker 1: forcare for shooting your mouth, tying your laces, putting on
- 15:18Speaker 1: your shirt, while you have literally built your whole personality.
- 15:24Speaker 2: On being.
- 15:27Speaker 1: This, being the guy who is there who takes care
- 15:31Speaker 1: of stuff, oh my god, it was. And it took,
- 15:34Speaker 1: by the way, a very very long time, because even
- 15:38Speaker 1: when I was already in rehab, I was telling my
- 15:40Speaker 1: wife all the time, oh my god, I feel so shitty,
- 15:43Speaker 1: like I cannot help you. I'm just far away from everything.
- 15:51Speaker 4: And I think, as a man, right, you are raised
- 15:54Speaker 4: and you feel that you have to be the caretaker
- 15:57Speaker 4: and to have somebody else caring for you. I'm sure
- 16:00Speaker 4: that was difficult, and obviously it was very difficult, and
- 16:04Speaker 4: I can only imagine I've never gone through anything like that.
- 16:08Speaker 4: Did you or your wife have any support during that time?
- 16:13Speaker 4: Like maybe someone outside of the two of you that
- 16:18Speaker 4: could help you physically, or did you have any mental support?
- 16:24Speaker 2: All the time, you cannot do it. And then that's
- 16:27Speaker 2: why I never talk about my This has never been
- 16:31Speaker 2: my victory.
- 16:32Speaker 1: This has always been our victory. You cannot do, by
- 16:38Speaker 1: the way, this thing called life, especially when you're going
- 16:42Speaker 1: through difficult situations. But this thing called life, we're not
- 16:45Speaker 1: supposed to do this alone. It's very cliche, like show
- 16:51Speaker 1: me your best friends, I'll tell you who you are.
- 16:55Speaker 1: But it's a real thing, like when you have people
- 16:58Speaker 1: around you that complain all the time, that always see
- 17:02Speaker 1: the worst in situations, that never dream, Yeah, you're probably
- 17:09Speaker 1: gonna find a way.
- 17:10Speaker 2: And I always tell this like.
- 17:13Speaker 1: I was lucky enough that I was already thirty two,
- 17:18Speaker 1: and so I had already built life experience.
- 17:21Speaker 2: I already built a support system around me.
- 17:24Speaker 1: I was lucky with with the medical self and all that,
- 17:28Speaker 1: but I had people around me that even when I
- 17:34Speaker 1: was at my lowest, and Mary, I can tell you
- 17:37Speaker 1: I was complaining all the time. And I'm, by the way,
- 17:41Speaker 1: someone that never complains. I never do that. I'm the
- 17:45Speaker 1: most high energy, the most optimistic person. And you can
- 17:49Speaker 1: ask around. How will they will tell you? And I
- 17:53Speaker 1: was just so bad and they will never And I
- 17:56Speaker 1: was and I was missing a part of my skull,
- 17:59Speaker 1: like the top of that, I was missing a part
- 18:01Speaker 1: of my skull.
- 18:01Speaker 2: My cervicles were fractured.
- 18:04Speaker 1: I was in the hospital and I got people around
- 18:06Speaker 1: me that weren't afraid to tell me, Hey, this and
- 18:09Speaker 1: this isn't you.
- 18:11Speaker 2: Are you going to keep on complaining? Are you ready
- 18:16Speaker 2: to become better?
- 18:17Speaker 1: Because you need to know that even walking ten meters
- 18:22Speaker 1: physically felt like running American? Yeah, and they told me,
- 18:27Speaker 1: like ten meters, pleas the twelve, that's the fifteen. No,
- 18:32Speaker 1: but now that what I want to So you want
- 18:35Speaker 1: to stay here? This is wake up a bit, please
- 18:39Speaker 1: on touragi.
- 18:41Speaker 4: It's everything create change is very hard work, right of course. Yeah,
- 18:48Speaker 4: So what did this teach you about humility and trust
- 18:53Speaker 4: and receiving help?
- 18:56Speaker 2: That is a strength.
- 18:58Speaker 1: Being ask just asking for help, especially as men, because
- 19:05Speaker 1: we've been thought social media the past movies that asking
- 19:12Speaker 1: for help is the week. Now it's a strength, or
- 19:15Speaker 1: at least being open to it. Not necessarily asking.
- 19:21Speaker 4: For me, but just.
- 19:23Speaker 2: Be open to it.
- 19:25Speaker 4: Yeah, accept it, accept it. That's a great way to put.
- 19:30Speaker 2: It right, Yeah, just accept it.
- 19:35Speaker 4: Well, from this, you have written a book called Everything
- 19:39Speaker 4: Feels Impossible Until It's done. Yes, tell us about tell
- 19:44Speaker 4: us about your book. What was that like writing your book?
- 19:50Speaker 2: Oh, I've learned so much by the way.
- 19:51Speaker 1: I told so many people, like, one thing I would
- 19:55Speaker 1: suggest you to do is write a book about your story,
- 19:58Speaker 1: not to necessarily publish it, but you'll learn so many things.
- 20:03Speaker 1: And for me, it was like when I was in
- 20:06Speaker 1: coma still, so many people told my wife, if there's
- 20:10Speaker 1: someone that is going to survive this, it's Vincent. And
- 20:15Speaker 1: then after me waking up, there were so many people
- 20:18Speaker 1: telling me like medical staff, friends, stranger that told me
- 20:22Speaker 1: like there but your mindset made the whole difference.
- 20:24Speaker 2: And I was like, where do these two things come from?
- 20:29Speaker 1: And then there was a second thing where my Auntie,
- 20:32Speaker 1: when I was still in rehab, she told me so
- 20:34Speaker 1: many times, you should write a book on all the
- 20:37Speaker 1: It was the most difficult period of my whole life,
- 20:41Speaker 1: but not the worst. We left so much and she
- 20:44Speaker 1: told me so many times like you should write a
- 20:46Speaker 1: book about all this. And then it was a thirteen
- 20:49Speaker 1: way twenty nineteen. So until twenty nineteen, it was considered
- 20:58Speaker 1: physically in power to run a marathon under two hours.
- 21:04Speaker 2: A human body.
- 21:05Speaker 1: A human body is not able to run a marathon
- 21:08Speaker 1: under two hours. Elliott Kipchoggi comes around, he's already rund
- 21:13Speaker 1: comes around and decides to run a marathon. This is
- 21:18Speaker 1: not an official a marathon, so it never got registered,
- 21:21Speaker 1: but you can look it up. By the way, runs
- 21:24Speaker 1: a marathon in one hour fifteen nine minutes. Wow, okay,
- 21:30Speaker 1: fifteen nine minutes forty seconds.
- 21:35Speaker 2: Twenty nineteen.
- 21:36Speaker 1: A couple of months ago, we're twenty twenty six, a
- 21:40Speaker 1: couple of months ago. There's a London marathon. Two marathon
- 21:44Speaker 1: runners in the same marathon run the marathon under two hours.
- 21:50Speaker 1: It always And so this all came together in because
- 21:57Speaker 1: the present, the DS were there. I was not supposed
- 22:03Speaker 1: to talk to have this conversation with you right now.
- 22:05Speaker 1: They were telling my wife, like, start preparing the funeral
- 22:08Speaker 1: because your husband it's not gonna make it. Every like,
- 22:15Speaker 1: when you're going through something difficult, it always seems it
- 22:21Speaker 1: is always the worst.
- 22:23Speaker 2: Thing in the whole world for you, which is okay,
- 22:27Speaker 2: And it.
- 22:28Speaker 6: Always seems feels impossible to go through and it could
- 22:36Speaker 6: be whatever, Okay, I got hit by a car.
- 22:40Speaker 2: It could be running a marathon under two hours.
- 22:43Speaker 1: You just went through a divorce, you feel an exam,
- 22:48Speaker 1: you try to lose weight, you try to do you
- 22:52Speaker 1: try to.
- 22:53Speaker 2: Earn more money. It always feels im possible until do it.
- 23:00Speaker 2: And so the book is for kee. It's just like
- 23:05Speaker 2: a means to an end for people to ask themselves
- 23:08Speaker 2: the question why not mean? And set up why I mean?
- 23:13Speaker 2: Because unfortunately for twenty six we.
- 23:15Speaker 7: Got so good at victimizing, and it's always something or
- 23:22Speaker 7: someone else, and then it's a society, and then it's government,
- 23:26Speaker 7: and then it's our friends, our family, our husband, wife.
- 23:32Speaker 3: Not writing your book.
- 23:34Speaker 4: So one of the things I was thinking of what
- 23:36Speaker 4: thinking it was impossible. I'm almost eleven years sober, and
- 23:41Speaker 4: I thought I would never live life without alcohol. I mean,
- 23:44Speaker 4: it was what I knew. And then I wrote my
- 23:48Speaker 4: memoir and it's so true, Like writing your book, it
- 23:51Speaker 4: was one of the most cathartic things for me to
- 23:54Speaker 4: ever do, like going back and reliving the story over
- 23:59Speaker 4: and over, but in a different way. Uh, the abuse
- 24:03Speaker 4: and such that that formed me and you know, took
- 24:09Speaker 4: me to coping with.
- 24:10Speaker 3: Alcohol, right, But.
- 24:13Speaker 4: It's it's so healing if you approach it in the
- 24:17Speaker 4: right way right and then you then you find from
- 24:21Speaker 4: that the miracles throughout it, and then how you can
- 24:25Speaker 4: turn that around and then help other people.
- 24:28Speaker 2: Always always bottle.
- 24:30Speaker 3: Once mm hmm. Yeah. So how are you helping people today?
- 24:36Speaker 2: Not only today? The only thing I did reacting, I
- 24:40Speaker 2: just filter everything.
- 24:42Speaker 1: I've been helping people since as long as I can remember,
- 24:46Speaker 1: which was again, by the way, proven when I was
- 24:49Speaker 1: in Coma.
- 24:49Speaker 2: You, Marcy, you need to know there was crazy things and.
- 24:54Speaker 1: Unfortunately I wasn't able to live it because I was sleep.
- 24:59Speaker 2: I was in came But you need to know.
- 25:01Speaker 1: When I was in ICU, there were lines outside of ICU.
- 25:08Speaker 1: Hundreds of people wanted to just visit. My wife had
- 25:13Speaker 1: to put up a word document for people meant to register.
- 25:18Speaker 2: Marcy. It was crazy. There were.
- 25:24Speaker 1: From all over the world, all over Belgium, people that
- 25:29Speaker 1: I did not even know that I just crossed ones
- 25:32Speaker 1: wise three times. People from the businesses that we owned, friends, families, strangers,
- 25:40Speaker 1: even clients from the business caving like big companies.
- 25:46Speaker 2: All because you try to.
- 25:49Speaker 1: Be someone to people around you and you hope that
- 25:55Speaker 1: people see you in the same way. And then there's
- 26:00Speaker 1: this one thing like what what would you like people
- 26:03Speaker 1: to tell about you when you're not there anymore at
- 26:07Speaker 1: your funeral? And and it even gives me goose first
- 26:10Speaker 1: right now, like my family bought my family, my wife,
- 26:13Speaker 1: they bought me books when I was telling coma black
- 26:16Speaker 1: books where doctor's therapist, friends, family could write in it.
- 26:23Speaker 1: And in the beginning it was sort of like a
- 26:25Speaker 1: goodbye word because again the narrative was like, this guy
- 26:28Speaker 1: is not going to survive. And the most amazing thing
- 26:34Speaker 1: I was able to witness is reading all that while
- 26:39Speaker 1: still being in life. These were things people were going
- 26:42Speaker 1: to tell about me when I was dead, And I
- 26:46Speaker 1: was able to read all that while still be until
- 26:50Speaker 1: today and a couple of weeks ago i read it
- 26:53Speaker 1: for the last for the last time.
- 26:57Speaker 2: I still cry. You know what people tell about you?
- 27:00Speaker 1: Yeah, you know what's beautiful things like? And again it
- 27:05Speaker 1: all goes back to the and you can call it whatever.
- 27:08Speaker 1: You can call it God, you can call it energy,
- 27:11Speaker 1: you can call it luck, you could call it destiny.
- 27:15Speaker 2: But there was never a plan.
- 27:17Speaker 1: B Vincent was supposed to survive what was considered impossible.
- 27:25Speaker 4: Well, that's what I wanted to ask you. What is you?
- 27:28Speaker 4: What is your spiritual connection today?
- 27:32Speaker 1: Oh my godness, that's an amazing question, because I had
- 27:35Speaker 1: a tough time, because I'm somemo'st I'm super rational, Like
- 27:42Speaker 1: I had such a hard time believing or being convinced
- 27:47Speaker 1: that there's like a God somewhere out there looking down
- 27:54Speaker 1: on October the eleventh and telling him some.
- 28:00Speaker 2: Today, this guy's gonna say that I had a hard time.
- 28:04Speaker 2: I couldn't.
- 28:05Speaker 1: I could not wrap my head around it impossible. And
- 28:09Speaker 1: then I was walking through Brussels. This is already more
- 28:13Speaker 1: than a year ago. I was walking through Brussels and
- 28:16Speaker 1: I was like, Hey, no, a lot but todd life. Hey,
- 28:22Speaker 1: maybe God lives through.
- 28:24Speaker 2: All of us.
- 28:25Speaker 3: Thank you, that's what I believe.
- 28:27Speaker 2: Yeah, he might lifts through Marcy lives to Vincent.
- 28:34Speaker 1: And I'm having, by the way, a lot of this
- 28:37Speaker 1: conversation with a lot of people nowadays, and I tell them,
- 28:42Speaker 1: he already did his work in He already puts you
- 28:46Speaker 1: on this earth. He already put thoughts in your head.
- 28:51Speaker 1: Information is out there. We live in a society where
- 28:56Speaker 1: life is by definition.
- 29:00Speaker 2: Pretty easy for you.
- 29:02Speaker 1: It must for you for me, it's pretty easy for
- 29:06Speaker 1: a lot of us. It's a bit more difficult, but
- 29:10Speaker 1: for us it's pretty easy. What what do you expect
- 29:16Speaker 1: when you pray that he pays your rent, that he
- 29:20Speaker 1: pays your salary, Like, come on, yeah, I know, come on,
- 29:26Speaker 1: Like everything you need is out there. It's not supposed
- 29:32Speaker 1: to be easy. It is going to be difficult, and
- 29:35Speaker 1: we're going to make a lot of mistakes.
- 29:38Speaker 2: But you complaining.
- 29:40Speaker 1: About not getting whatever you want to get while not
- 29:44Speaker 1: doing the work, it's gonna one day lead up to regret.
- 29:49Speaker 1: Please stop it. He already did this work.
- 29:53Speaker 4: So with that, what matters to you now that perhaps
- 30:00Speaker 4: didn't matter to you before.
- 30:03Speaker 1: I even posted on it a couple of months ago.
- 30:07Speaker 1: It's funny how ambition can change from opening I've always
- 30:12Speaker 1: been in hospitality, from opening more restaurants to just being helping.
- 30:16Speaker 2: I can tell you right now what matters to me is.
- 30:20Speaker 1: Living as long as I can in the best shape
- 30:25Speaker 1: that I can.
- 30:26Speaker 2: I'm going harder.
- 30:28Speaker 1: Yeah, I'm not negotiable anymore, And unconsciously I was already
- 30:33Speaker 1: before the accident. But I'm detailed and I went deep
- 30:37Speaker 1: into the research on supplementing, on movement and nutrition, on
- 30:43Speaker 1: chronic stress. All that I'm going hard I'm trying to
- 30:47Speaker 1: prove everyone, first of all myself, but everyone around me.
- 30:52Speaker 1: From afar and from very close, you can go a
- 30:57Speaker 1: very long way while enjoying life to the fullest. By
- 31:02Speaker 1: the way, and this is my ultimate goal, being able
- 31:07Speaker 1: to tell myself and I encourage everyone to do. Everyone
- 31:10Speaker 1: that is listening, by the way, right now, the last
- 31:14Speaker 1: moment on this earth, you being able to stare yourself. Wow,
- 31:22Speaker 1: what an amazing life that I have. I did everything
- 31:26Speaker 1: I wanted to do, and I said everything I wanted
- 31:29Speaker 1: to say. Whatever that looks like right now today, Marci,
- 31:34Speaker 1: for you, as for me, might look different than five
- 31:37Speaker 1: years ago, and will look different in five years or
- 31:40Speaker 1: in ten years and fifteen years. And you just need
- 31:44Speaker 1: to be all the time. And that's where it gets tricky,
- 31:47Speaker 1: because you need to be honest towards yourself every single moment.
- 31:52Speaker 1: And we got so good in twenty twenty six I
- 31:56Speaker 1: lying to ourselves and prepening and stop all that, please.
- 32:02Speaker 3: Yeah, one hundred percent. Hi.
- 32:06Speaker 4: Let me tell you when I stopped lying to myself
- 32:08Speaker 4: and lying to others, and life changed tremendously.
- 32:13Speaker 3: And there's like this weight that just comes.
- 32:16Speaker 2: Off your shoulders, right yep.
- 32:18Speaker 4: So I'm going to take just a quick break and
- 32:22Speaker 4: share about my new book, wake Up You're Not Broken.
- 32:25Speaker 4: Are you in the first thirty days of sobriety or
- 32:28Speaker 4: wondering if now is your time to start?
- 32:31Speaker 3: Hi?
- 32:31Speaker 4: I'm Marcy Hopkins and I wrote wake Up You're Not
- 32:34Speaker 4: Broken just for you.
- 32:36Speaker 3: It's a real.
- 32:36Speaker 4: Raw guide to those first thirty days, what no one
- 32:40Speaker 4: tells you, what you will feel, and how to keep going.
- 32:43Speaker 4: This isn't about perfection, It's about progress. Or to your
- 32:48Speaker 4: copy now on Amazon. Remember, You're not alone, You're not broken,
- 32:53Speaker 4: You're waking up. Hello all, Welcome back, Vincent. It's just
- 32:59Speaker 4: incredible that you are here with us today after what
- 33:03Speaker 4: you went through, and you've shared some incredible insights and
- 33:09Speaker 4: how things have changed for you. But as you've created
- 33:15Speaker 4: these changes in your life, in your life, and one
- 33:18Speaker 4: of the things that you've talked about is taking action, right,
- 33:20Speaker 4: we have to take action to create the change. So
- 33:26Speaker 4: what are some consistent actions that you've taken to help
- 33:30Speaker 4: you daily habits that have helped you to change your
- 33:35Speaker 4: outlook in life and the trajectory of your life.
- 33:40Speaker 2: I hope you're ready, Marci.
- 33:45Speaker 1: First of all, what you just said is literally the
- 33:48Speaker 1: most important thing everyone could should realize and should accept.
- 33:57Speaker 2: Big change is done in the big moments. It's always done.
- 34:03Speaker 1: And the small daily habits and the small decisions, and
- 34:09Speaker 1: it's oh there's a lot, Oh my god, there's a lot.
- 34:13Speaker 1: First of all, keep word to yourself you were gonna
- 34:18Speaker 1: wake up at seven or six or eight whatever. Second,
- 34:23Speaker 1: follow your own happiness, not your parents, not your family,
- 34:28Speaker 1: not your friends. And again it always goes back to
- 34:33Speaker 1: the you know, let me make it easy. There's these
- 34:36Speaker 1: three questions I encourage everyone to ask themselves at the
- 34:40Speaker 1: end of every day, not just one, but every day.
- 34:44Speaker 1: First did I do everything I had to do and
- 34:49Speaker 1: wanted to do today?
- 34:51Speaker 2: Yes? And no? And why? Two? Am I truly happy? Yes?
- 35:00Speaker 3: No?
- 35:01Speaker 2: And why? And three was that better today than I
- 35:07Speaker 2: was yesterday? Yes?
- 35:09Speaker 1: No?
- 35:10Speaker 2: Why?
- 35:11Speaker 1: If you're able to tell me, Because again, there are
- 35:15Speaker 1: days life is life. There are days that you'll be
- 35:18Speaker 1: less happy. There were days that you were not able
- 35:20Speaker 1: to do everything. But if you're able to chase yes,
- 35:23Speaker 1: to answer yes to those three questions as much as
- 35:27Speaker 1: you can, for as long as you can, I can
- 35:29Speaker 1: tell you, Marcy in your life is going to be
- 35:31Speaker 1: pretty amazing. Yea, and whatever that, whatever that looks like
- 35:36Speaker 1: for you, as for me today, as for everyone that
- 35:40Speaker 1: is listening right now, will be different than.
- 35:44Speaker 2: In five years, ten years.
- 35:46Speaker 1: And you just need to be conscious about it, intentional
- 35:50Speaker 1: about it.
- 35:52Speaker 2: We need to be like we live.
- 35:58Speaker 1: Life automatic pilot, every every single one of us. And
- 36:05Speaker 1: ask everyone that already flew a plane automatic talot goes
- 36:13Speaker 1: for so long you cannot land a planet plane on
- 36:17Speaker 1: automatic talent?
- 36:19Speaker 2: Yes, or we got so good like we Marcy, look
- 36:23Speaker 2: at this, we wake up. By the way, Wait where
- 36:28Speaker 2: do you live right now? Wait? Wait you are right now.
- 36:31Speaker 3: I'm in New Jersey.
- 36:33Speaker 2: New Jersey, of case of New York. Go to Central station.
- 36:36Speaker 2: Go to Central Station at eight a m.
- 36:39Speaker 1: In the morning, and look at people how they're walking around.
- 36:44Speaker 3: Mm hmm yeah, aimlessly.
- 36:49Speaker 2: Yeah, automatic talent.
- 36:52Speaker 1: They woke up in the morning just because they have
- 36:54Speaker 1: to do a job for a certain paycheck that is
- 36:58Speaker 1: going to afford their lives, start hopefully mm.
- 37:02Speaker 3: Hmmm, doing the same thing over and over again, right by.
- 37:06Speaker 2: Which, by the way, is good, which, by the way,
- 37:08Speaker 2: is good.
- 37:09Speaker 1: But where it gets funny is you have a lot
- 37:14Speaker 1: of people that do a job that they actually hate
- 37:20Speaker 1: for a paycheck that doesn't afford the lifestyle they built
- 37:25Speaker 1: for themselves, with colleagues.
- 37:28Speaker 2: That they hate and management that they hate.
- 37:31Speaker 1: To then complain about that same job too, friends that
- 37:37Speaker 1: they do not really like neither, And then we all
- 37:42Speaker 1: ask ourselves how come we're burned out in the depression?
- 37:47Speaker 1: Come on, please, But when you wake up every single
- 37:54Speaker 1: day excited about your day?
- 37:59Speaker 2: Were you excited about when you woke up this morning?
- 38:01Speaker 2: Where you're excited?
- 38:03Speaker 3: I'm always excited about a new day.
- 38:05Speaker 1: Yeah, of course, you know, you know, you see you
- 38:09Speaker 1: seem like it, but like exactly that whatever it looks like. Again,
- 38:14Speaker 1: it might be you going to your job because you
- 38:16Speaker 1: really love it, or you're going on vacation and you
- 38:19Speaker 1: have something to do, and you just when.
- 38:21Speaker 2: You wake up every most of your.
- 38:23Speaker 1: Days excited, and then you go at the end of
- 38:29Speaker 1: the day too bad, feeling at peace, like.
- 38:35Speaker 2: It was amazing.
- 38:37Speaker 1: Imagine Wait and that, because a year is pretty long.
- 38:41Speaker 1: A year is three hundred and sixty five days. Imagine
- 38:44Speaker 1: let's let's let's say not every single day, but let's
- 38:48Speaker 1: say you do at least three hundred days like this,
- 38:53Speaker 1: life all of a sudden becomes.
- 38:56Speaker 2: Exciting, easier, mm hmm. That's what's been even changed.
- 39:03Speaker 1: And that is and that is one decision, that is
- 39:07Speaker 1: you deciding like, hey, what does Martian like when you're
- 39:13Speaker 1: able to look at yourself in a mirror, and you'd
- 39:15Speaker 1: be like, what does Martian.
- 39:18Speaker 2: Really like doing today?
- 39:21Speaker 4: Yeah, I mean listen, it's it's your mindset and how
- 39:25Speaker 4: you think about things and the practices that you incorporate
- 39:29Speaker 4: in your day make a huge, huge change in the
- 39:33Speaker 4: way you live your life. I mean, I lived as
- 39:36Speaker 4: a victim for so very long because of trauma of
- 39:40Speaker 4: my childhood, and once I made that decision, it was
- 39:47Speaker 4: a very difficult decision, but it was life changing.
- 39:50Speaker 3: But it was a decision.
- 39:51Speaker 4: I mean, we have choices every single day and they're
- 39:55Speaker 4: not easy.
- 39:56Speaker 3: These things are not.
- 39:57Speaker 4: Easy, but there's so right, so rewarding, And that's one
- 40:04Speaker 4: of the things that you do. You encourage people to
- 40:06Speaker 4: build their lives around their health and their mindset and
- 40:09Speaker 4: their relationships and their financial freedom. So if someone out
- 40:15Speaker 4: there is feeling overwhelmed, right, we're talking about these things, but.
- 40:20Speaker 3: Where can they begin? Where can they start with? Which
- 40:24Speaker 3: is one small action today?
- 40:27Speaker 1: I always like to use examples that are easier to understand.
- 40:32Speaker 2: Look, the World Cup was literally two three months ago.
- 40:37Speaker 1: Ask any athletes, literally, any athletes worldwide. It could be
- 40:44Speaker 1: a football player, rugby player, or soccer player, potato potato athlete,
- 40:51Speaker 1: hockey player, why.
- 40:53Speaker 2: They do what they do? Why you do all this?
- 40:58Speaker 1: They will all tell you, literally on the spot, what
- 41:03Speaker 1: else would I do? I love this for them, It's
- 41:06Speaker 1: obvious if you ask the same question to every day people,
- 41:14Speaker 1: they will not even be able to start their second thing.
- 41:18Speaker 1: And this is probably the most important thing for this question.
- 41:23Speaker 1: There is not a single football okay, yeah, football player,
- 41:29Speaker 1: a soccer player after the World Cup that got eliminated.
- 41:37Speaker 1: World Cup was done for them, lost the final, go
- 41:41Speaker 1: for it.
- 41:41Speaker 4: There.
- 41:42Speaker 1: You can ask any one of them if they're gonna
- 41:46Speaker 1: quit their job, meaning stop playing football. Not a single
- 41:51Speaker 1: player will tell you why. For them, if you're playing
- 41:56Speaker 1: at that level, losing it's part of the game. But
- 42:01Speaker 1: for us as regular human beings, losing, falling down is
- 42:09Speaker 1: the word that can happen. And by the way, they
- 42:11Speaker 1: hate it. That's why they're crying on the field. They
- 42:14Speaker 1: hate it.
- 42:16Speaker 2: But okay, losing is part of the game.
- 42:19Speaker 1: Roger Federer, by the way, who's considered at least top
- 42:23Speaker 1: three tennis player in the whole world. The stats were
- 42:27Speaker 1: out a couple of months ago lost I think it
- 42:30Speaker 1: was games of points fifty four percent while still being
- 42:34Speaker 1: considered one of the best tennis players out there, Like,
- 42:38Speaker 1: come on, please, why are we so obsessed or so
- 42:42Speaker 1: focused on losing?
- 42:44Speaker 3: So absolutely, losing is part of our learning.
- 42:49Speaker 4: That's where we learn the most, and we don't even
- 42:53Speaker 4: start in life a lot of times because we're so
- 42:55Speaker 4: fearful of losing, of failing. That is where the most
- 43:00Speaker 4: important lessons are learned. So Vincent, thank you so much
- 43:05Speaker 4: for coming on wake up. If you can just tell
- 43:06Speaker 4: us really quick where we can find your book and
- 43:09Speaker 4: also your group ui D.

- 43:38Speaker 4: needs to know that they can start over, that it
- 43:41Speaker 4: is possible, because sometimes it just takes hearing one story
- 43:47Speaker 4: or one conversation like we had today, which shares a
- 43:51Speaker 4: message of hope to change the direction of someone's life.
