- Greg: Good morning. What's up, friends? It is Tuesday, June 16th. I'm your host, Greg Miller, and this is the latest edition of Beliefs, Ballots, and Bulldogs. Not a good day last night. The ⁓ the dogs came up a little short. We'll ⁓ we'll talk about that a little bit later. But the the theme of the day, which actually sort of applies to last night's festivities, is ⁓ you are not entitled to the outcome. ⁓ it's a it's a little different ⁓ and and certainly a different theme than what the world tries to preach today. The world tries to tell us that that you control your own destiny, and for a large part I believe that to be true. But the Bible, ⁓ the Bible may say a little differently from time to time. You know, people ⁓ people get frustrated today because ⁓ we we believe that we deserve certain things, and we believe that if you work hard, you deserve success. And If you do the right thing, you deserve the promotion. And if you raise your kids right, you deserve a certain outcome for their lives. And then we get to the spiritual life. And and it's sometimes we feel like, hey, I I'm praying for this, so so God's gotta make it happen. I I deserve this and and I should get the answers I want, but but scripture repeatedly teaches that that you are responsible for your obedience, but God is responsible for the outcome. The scripture today comes from Ecclesiastes. ⁓ it's chapter nine, verse eleven. It says, I have seen something else under the sun. The race is not to the swift, or the battle to the strong, nor does food come to the wise, or wealth to the brilliant, or favor to the learned. But time and chance happen to them all. This is it sounds like this is not good news, right? This is It's it's a very fascinating verse to me because it it's telling us, hey, the the fastest doesn't always win, the strongest doesn't always prevail, the smartest don't always get rich, and and the most skilled don't always succeed. And you know, we we ask ourselves why. And I mean ultimately, you know, life is not a vending machine. You don't just get to push a certain button and get a certain outcome. ⁓ You know, we are we are always taught to to create certain virtues and certain skills and to certain attributes about ourselves, but but this verse is telling us it's it's not always about perseverance. It's not always about wisdom or discipline or priorities. Sometimes it's about humility. ⁓ you know, sometimes the the the modern mindset teaches us if I do X, then I am owed Y. ⁓ but the biblical mindset is different. It it says, do what is right and trust God with the results. This is something I think, you know, as as parents, we certainly need to hear this because you absolutely you can you can love your children, you can teach your children, you can train your children up in the right way, as the Bible calls you to. You can pray for your children. And at some point, you still have to sit back and watch them make some questionable, if not bad, choices. Doesn't mean you failed. It just means sometimes God has a different plan than you do. And even when you do everything right, it may still end up with an outcome that you don't desire because he has a different plan. We live in a culture that is that is just absolutely obsessed with with control. And everybody thinks that that by their own actions they can engineer certain outcomes, whether it's politics or policy or technology or education or money or family or whatever it is, every, every one of us and and every generation after generation still comes back to the same conclusion. There are there are absolute limitations to human control. ⁓ You know, faithfulness is the assignment. The results are not. And and that is that is really what ⁓ what the the verse here in Ecclesiastes is trying to tell us that That you are responsible for your actions, your faithfulness, and your behaviors. But the outcomes are in God's hands, and you you just have to, you have to deal with that. Let's get into some sports talk. The ⁓ the dogs came up a little short yesterday in Omaha, ⁓ fell to Oklahoma four to three. started off at a three-nothing lead early for Oklahoma. Looked like it was gonna be a shootout, but both pitchers dialed in. You know, we we scored three runs on three solo shots, and that's just not gonna get it done. Gotta have runners on base, but ⁓ Props to props to Oklahoma. The starting pitcher was dialed in all night. You know, Caden Aoki battled after some early starts and tried to keep us in the game. But hey, we lived to fight another day. We are now in the loser's bracket, but we get to rematch with Texas tonight. ⁓ tonight, eight o'clock on ESPN. So y'all tune in and let's pull the dogs through and keep this run going. We are at 81 days until football season. 81 days. ⁓ if you're from my generation, there's a there's a number eighty-one that popped into mind. He was ⁓ he was ahead of his time, big Leonard Pope, number eighty-one, I believe a tight end out of I think Way Cross, Georgia, somewhere down south, or Americas, maybe it was Americas. ⁓ big Leonard Pope was six foot eight, two hundred and fifty pounds, and could actually run a little bit. He was he was Darnell Washington before Darnell Washington was. ⁓ Leonard ⁓ he he graduated. He he he was a difference maker for the dogs in Athens, hung around the NFL for a few years. ⁓ just just a cool guy to watch. It was it was fun to see that six foot eight frame running down the middle of the field at times. ⁓ Leonard Pope was was a damn good dog and and and Leonard Pope is is was a prototypical big jumbo tight end, could block, could run, could catch, could do it all. It was great. As for current players, we got a number eighty one on the roster this year that I think is gonna make a little name for himself. True freshman wide receiver, Craig Dandridge. ⁓ all spring people have been raving about him. I I You know, we are unproven in the wide receiver room. ⁓ but I think there's some young cats that are gonna step up. There's there's no ⁓ there's no Zachariah branches this year, but Talon Taylor and and number eighty one, which is today's countdown number, Craig Danders, I think will ⁓ will open some eyes as we as we roll into the year. ⁓ but ⁓ you know what? They are they are working hard in Athens, they are doing everything they can, ⁓ but it is not ⁓ it is not under their control. That that is, you know, ⁓ the ultimate The determination of what Ecclesiastes is telling us here is that even if you do everything right, and I think Kirby Smart does a lot right in Athens, Georgia, even if you do everything right, sometimes things aren't under your control. And that's that's the the mission of the day is to focus on simply doing your part. Follow the word of God, do your part, do the things you know are right, and trust God with the outcome. Ultimately, that's what faith is really all about. We know what we're called to do and we need to follow that. But the outcome's in his hands. Big picture, little picture, all pictures. The outcome's in his hands. Y'all know how we do it here, baby. We close it up with the same thing every day 'cause it's what's really important and it's what's gonna set us all on that consistent path to get closer to God. Get in your Bible, say your prayers, love one another, and tell the truth. God bless.
