- 0:07This is Finding God at Work.
- 0:14Just a reminder that Finding God at Work
- 0:16isn't just a podcast, it's also an online
- 0:18course.
- 0:19Check it out at findinggodatwork.org.
- 0:26Our current series is Meaningful Work, Calling, Formation,
- 0:30Service, and Love.
- 0:33Today in the liturgical calendar, it's Maundy Thursday,
- 0:37which is the day when Christians commemorate Jesus'
- 0:40last meal with his disciples, after which he
- 0:43was arrested and then moving forward into Friday,
- 0:46his crucifixion.
- 0:47And so I wanted to take some time
- 0:50as we're looking at what does it mean
- 0:51to love our teammates at work, to look
- 0:54at how we love people through pain.
- 0:56And when we're experiencing pain and suffering in
- 1:00our personal lives, that definitely affects our energy
- 1:02in the workplace.
- 1:03Or when we're facing pain at work, obviously
- 1:05that's right there in front of us.
- 1:07And how we choose to respond when we
- 1:11face pain makes a world of difference to
- 1:14the people around us.
- 1:15And Jesus is our example here.
- 1:18So as I was thinking about this, I
- 1:21was reflecting back to an earlier season of
- 1:24life that me and Katie were in.
- 1:27We had been married for about three years,
- 1:30and we ended up in the emergency room
- 1:32at Rush downtown.
- 1:35And just some weird symptoms, some pain that
- 1:39Katie was experiencing, we didn't know what was
- 1:41going on, turned into a really long night.
- 1:44And that night was kind of the first
- 1:46night of three straight years of health crisis
- 1:50for Katie.
- 1:51And, you know, the details are more her
- 1:53to share than mine.
- 1:55But we faced one thing after the other.
- 1:59Mental health stuff, physical health stuff, stuff related
- 2:02to earlier stuff she had experienced in childhood,
- 2:04stuff that was new.
- 2:06We joked at some point that she should
- 2:08just get a t-shirt that says comorbidity,
- 2:11which is the technical term when you have
- 2:12a lot of different things going on at
- 2:14the same time.
- 2:16And for me, we were very young, we
- 2:18were still in our early 20s.
- 2:20I was just totally unprepared for this.
- 2:23I did not expect to be in this
- 2:24kind of caregiver role for Katie so early
- 2:27in our marriage.
- 2:28There was this kind of fog of confusion
- 2:30that rolled in.
- 2:31It was really hard for me to pray.
- 2:34It was hard for me to have energy
- 2:36for things like work.
- 2:39Sometimes I would just find myself sitting and
- 2:41staring for a while and kind of have
- 2:43to come back to the moment.
- 2:46And that painful moment in our story became
- 2:51a really spiritually formative time for me.
- 2:55As I learned, rather than running away from
- 2:58the pain that I could actually face into
- 3:01it.
- 3:02I think that's the challenge for us whenever
- 3:04we're in a season of life like that,
- 3:06is not to run away from the pain,
- 3:08but to face into it.
- 3:10And on Monday, Thursday, we have the example
- 3:13of Jesus who can show us how He
- 3:16faced into the pain.
- 3:19And so I want to look at some
- 3:21of the Gospel of Luke and its description
- 3:24of this day in Jesus's life.
- 3:26And I think we see kind of four
- 3:28aspects of how He faced into suffering, and
- 3:32I've phrased them as kind of I statements.
- 3:35This was Jesus's attitude.
- 3:38I'm ready for this.
- 3:40I don't have to fight this.
- 3:42I can love others in the middle of
- 3:45this.
- 3:46And there's something better on the other side
- 3:49of this.
- 3:51Okay, so first I'm ready for this.
- 3:54As Jesus and His disciples are sitting down
- 3:57at the table for what Jesus knows is
- 3:59the last supper He will have with them
- 4:01before His death.
- 4:03He says, I have eagerly desired to eat
- 4:05this Passover with you before I suffer.
- 4:10Jesus knows exactly what's coming.
- 4:14He's ready.
- 4:15He prepares for it.
- 4:18He doesn't run away or avoid the suffering.
- 4:21He's ready for it.
- 4:24Okay, second thing, I don't have to fight
- 4:26this.
- 4:27The difference between Jesus's attitude and the disciples'
- 4:31attitude couldn't be more different.
- 4:34They are not ready for Jesus to suffer,
- 4:36and they've resisted the idea of Jesus suffering
- 4:39earlier in His ministry, and then that's also
- 4:41what happens at the moment that Jesus is
- 4:43arrested.
- 4:44So this is Luke chapter 22, verses 49
- 4:47through 51.
- 4:48When Jesus' followers saw what was going to
- 4:51happen, they said, Lord, should we strike with
- 4:53our swords?
- 4:54And one of them struck the servant of
- 4:56the high priest, cutting off his right ear.
- 4:58But Jesus answered, no more of this.
- 5:00And he touched the man's ear and healed
- 5:02him.
- 5:04If this wasn't such a serious and poignant
- 5:07scene, the disciples' response would be comical.
- 5:10It's so the opposite of what Jesus has
- 5:13been calling them to.
- 5:14They think that, you know, violence is the
- 5:18answer here.
- 5:19And some of them think to ask Jesus.
- 5:20But then one of them, who we know
- 5:22from other accounts is Peter, he just goes
- 5:24ahead and tries to, apparently tries to kill.
- 5:28I mean, you're swinging a sword at somebody's
- 5:29head, that's a lethal move.
- 5:31This soldier, this servant of the high priest,
- 5:33whose ear gets cut off.
- 5:36And yet Jesus, He stops them.
- 5:40He says, no more of this.
- 5:42And then He heals this servant.
- 5:45That posture matches His readiness.
- 5:48Instead of feeling like He has to do
- 5:50whatever He can to avoid suffering, even hurting
- 5:54others, He embraces suffering.
- 5:57He goes willingly with those who are arresting
- 5:59Him.
- 6:02Okay.
- 6:04So, so far, Jesus' attitude, I'm ready for
- 6:07this.
- 6:08I don't have to fight this.
- 6:11And third thing, I can love others in
- 6:14the middle of this.
- 6:17And we know from our reflections on love
- 6:20that to love is to seek the good
- 6:21of the other.
- 6:24But that requires paying attention to others, as
- 6:26we looked at in our last episode.
- 6:28And suffering, if you're like me, when you're
- 6:30suffering, you can be tempted to just really
- 6:33focus on yourself.
- 6:35The suffering draws you away from looking at
- 6:37others, and you just look at what you're
- 6:38going through.
- 6:41But Jesus, in the midst of His suffering,
- 6:45was able to persist in focusing on others,
- 6:48their needs, their desires.
- 6:52He was present to them in the moment,
- 6:55even while He was going through that pain.
- 6:58And so we see this with three particular
- 7:02cases on this night in Jesus' life.
- 7:04First, the high priest servant, the one who
- 7:07got his ear cut off, right?
- 7:08Jesus does a miracle.
- 7:12This is His final miracle before His death
- 7:15and resurrection, is this miraculous healing of His
- 7:19enemy.
- 7:21Unlike many other miracle stories, there's no description
- 7:24of the high priest putting his faith in
- 7:27Jesus here.
- 7:28Since he's taking part in His arrest, we
- 7:30could probably imagine he probably doesn't believe Jesus
- 7:32is the Messiah.
- 7:33Although I wonder what happened to him after
- 7:35this encounter.
- 7:39But Jesus would have been totally within His
- 7:41rights to oppose this enemy, and yet instead
- 7:45He looks at what He needs.
- 7:47He's like, oh, He just got wounded by
- 7:50my hot-headed Peter.
- 7:52He needs healing.
- 7:54Jesus is still moving for the good of
- 7:57others, even at this moment.
- 7:59It's totally unmerited love for this servant of
- 8:03the high priest.
- 8:06As the story goes along toward Jesus' crucifixion,
- 8:09there are other people who, like those soldiers,
- 8:12like the servant of the high priest, are
- 8:14opposed to Jesus.
- 8:16And there's this mixed crowd of Jews and
- 8:18Gentiles who begin mocking Jesus in different ways.
- 8:22So Luke writes, this is in the next
- 8:23chapter, 23, starting on verse 35, Now, the
- 8:35typical response that human beings have when they
- 8:39face this kind of abuse from others is
- 8:41to just wilt in the face of it,
- 8:43or to return it in kind, to condemn
- 8:45those who condemn you, to return contempt with
- 8:48contempt, in kind of angry defiance.
- 8:51But Jesus doesn't do either of those things.
- 8:53He doesn't wilt in response to others' hatred,
- 8:56and He doesn't return hatred for hatred.
- 8:59Instead, He takes an interest in what's going
- 9:01on in these people's souls.
- 9:04Again, He's seeking their good.
- 9:06He prays for them.
- 9:08Father, forgive them, for they do not know
- 9:11what they are doing.
- 9:13That's Luke 23, 34.
- 9:15In His own pain, Jesus takes time to
- 9:18make excuses for the people who are mocking
- 9:20and murdering Him.
- 9:24And then finally, there's the disciple who we've
- 9:28come to know as the thief on the
- 9:29cross.
- 9:30So this is another crucified prisoner right next
- 9:33to Jesus on one of the three crosses
- 9:34there.
- 9:35And he says, Jesus, remember me when you
- 9:38come into your kingdom.
- 9:39That's Luke 23, 42.
- 9:42And Jesus responds, Truly, I tell you, today
- 9:45you will be with me in paradise.
- 9:48Again, Jesus is mustering the attention and the
- 9:52energy needed to love even at His lowest
- 9:55point.
- 9:57And the historical research about crucifixion has shown
- 10:00it was very difficult to speak while you
- 10:02were crucified.
- 10:03It would require pushing yourself up painfully on
- 10:07your nailed feet in order to speak.
- 10:11So Jesus actually embraces that a little bit
- 10:15more suffering in order to respond to the
- 10:18faith of this man next to Him, in
- 10:20order to reassure him that his faith is
- 10:23well-placed, that he will be with Jesus
- 10:26in paradise.
- 10:29So we see these three different cases, the
- 10:32high priest-servant, the soldiers and the mockers,
- 10:35the thief on the cross.
- 10:36Jesus is still focused on loving others in
- 10:40the middle of His suffering.
- 10:43Okay, so those are the three parts so
- 10:45far.
- 10:45Jesus' attitude is, I'm ready for this.
- 10:48I don't have to fight this.
- 10:50I can love others in the middle of
- 10:52this.
- 10:52And then the fourth part, there's something better
- 10:55on the other side of this.
- 10:58Jesus' statement, today you will be with me
- 11:00in paradise, shows that Jesus is still confident
- 11:03in the power of God.
- 11:05Jesus knows that the story is not over
- 11:07on Good Friday, but that God's life will
- 11:11still have the final word, that resurrection Sunday
- 11:14is coming.
- 11:16He trusts himself, he entrusts himself to God,
- 11:19who he knows will vindicate him.
- 11:23That's really important.
- 11:25Jesus would not be able to have this
- 11:28attitude of readiness, of not having to fight,
- 11:33of loving others, unless he was confident something
- 11:37better is coming.
- 11:41So now let's think about how we can
- 11:44practice this.
- 11:45When you face pain, maybe it's in your
- 11:47personal life and that's sapping your energy in
- 11:49the workplace, or maybe it's a challenge right
- 11:52there at work, maybe a work project that's
- 11:56going the wrong way, maybe a relationship at
- 11:59work that just doesn't have the trust it
- 12:01needs, maybe a boss or superior who's treating
- 12:04you unfairly.
- 12:06While you're facing that pain, what would it
- 12:10look like to adopt the attitude of I'm
- 12:13ready for this, I don't have to fight
- 12:16this, I can love others in the middle
- 12:20of this, and there's something better on the
- 12:24other side of this.
- 12:30Take some time this week, meditate on Jesus'
- 12:34life, his death, the hope of his resurrection,
- 12:38and ask him to show you how you
- 12:39can live that out, even in the midst
- 12:42of pain in the workplace.
- 12:48Thank you, Jesus, that you went to the
- 12:49cross for us.
- 12:51Thank you that you draw us into a
- 12:53life like yours, a life of love, even
- 12:56when it hurts.
- 12:59Give us that power beyond normal human attitudes
- 13:05to choose what we didn't choose, to love
- 13:11you and love others, even in the midst
- 13:13of pain.
- 13:16Jesus, do your work in us as we
- 13:18do our work with you.
- 13:24Thanks for listening.
