- 1:10Speaker 7: needed a new roof. Yeah, I shopped around and then
- 1:13Speaker 7: I found Shorlty Roofing, and boy, I'm glad I did.
- 1:15Speaker 7: The folks at Shulty guided me every step of the way.
- 1:18Speaker 7: They showed me my options, They told me what my

- 1:23Speaker 7: the complication out of an otherwise very stressful situation. They
- 1:27Speaker 7: took off the damage roof, put on the new roof,

- 1:51Speaker 9: Tomorrow, Kirk Foles, Tony Catalina Young, Ryan Old will in
- 1:56Speaker 9: Monday Writers round Table. We'll be talking about a new
- 2:02Speaker 9: World Series Champion by then. I guess could be talking
- 2:08Speaker 9: about one by tomorrow night. So we got that going
- 2:14Speaker 9: on for us, which is nice. A professor at Idaho
- 2:18Speaker 9: State says he didn't just quote believe that Bigfoot existed,
- 2:26Speaker 9: but found evidence for it. Jeffrey Meldrum, professor of anatomy
- 2:31Speaker 9: and anthropology at Idaho State and Pocatello likes to begin
- 2:37Speaker 9: his scholarly talks with a long and fastidious primer on
- 2:42Speaker 9: human evolution before finally pivoting to his subject, Bigfoot. Meldrum
- 2:49Speaker 9: didn't talk about bigfoot the way supermarket tabloids do, but
- 2:54Speaker 9: as another species, a relic hominid. He calls it a
- 2:59Speaker 9: branch of our own bushy family tree, like Neanderthals, but
- 3:03Speaker 9: one which never went extinct and being rather rare, is
- 3:07Speaker 9: still just lumbering around.
- 3:10Speaker 8: Eluding us. This is a professor.
- 3:13Speaker 9: These people are teaching your children's filding their head full
- 3:18Speaker 9: of mush. Analyzing three D scans of casts of alleged
- 3:22Speaker 9: bigfoot tracks during a lecture in twenty fourteen Yakima Bigfoot
- 3:28Speaker 9: roundup in Washington, Meldrum noted that those footprints were clearly
- 3:33Speaker 9: different from human prints, but all similar to each other.
- 3:38Speaker 9: They shared a very distinct morphology of the forefoot and
- 3:43Speaker 9: a conspicuous flexibility in the middle common in ape. He says,
- 3:48Speaker 9: their expansion cracks is that substrate has heaved up to
- 3:54Speaker 9: relieve pressure that has concentrated on the four foot during
- 3:57Speaker 9: the latter part of his stance.
- 4:00Speaker 8: Sounds like a defensive coordinator.
- 4:02Speaker 9: His contention was that these three footprints discovered on two
- 4:06Speaker 9: continents over three decades were either real evidence of a
- 4:10Speaker 9: Bigfoot or some incredibly long running and almost pointlessly sophisticated
- 4:16Speaker 9: hoax designed with the specificity to trick someone exactly like him.
- 4:24Speaker 9: Meldrum died of brain cancer about six weeks ago. At
- 4:30Speaker 9: sixty seven, was the only and certainly most prominent tenured
- 4:37Speaker 9: academic to study Bigfoot. Well credentialed and disarmingly mild mannerd,
- 4:45Speaker 9: he was both the most straight laced guest on Animal
- 4:48Speaker 9: Planets Finding Bigfoot reality series and one of the most
- 4:53Speaker 9: peculiar on NPR's Science Friday. Jane Goodall, who did believe
- 4:59Speaker 9: in Bigfoot, praised Meldrum's book Sasquatch Legends Meet Science as
- 5:04Speaker 9: bringing a much needed level of scientific analysis to the issue.
- 5:10Speaker 9: Meldrum didn't use the word believe when it came to Bigfoot.
- 5:14Speaker 9: That's unscientific. I'm not out to proselytize that Bigfoot exists.
- 5:20Speaker 9: I place legend under scrutiny, and my conclusion is absolutely
- 5:26Speaker 9: Bigfoot exist. We need I wish this guy would have
- 5:30Speaker 9: studied cheapercabbras. Don Jeffrey Meldrum, born in Salt Lake, oldest
- 5:37Speaker 9: of three children, grew up in Eugene. Accompanied his father
- 5:41Speaker 9: in age ten to the screening of the Patterson Gimlin film,
- 5:46Speaker 9: a sixty seven home movie shot by two ranchers that
- 5:50Speaker 9: captured Bigfoot loping across a dry creek bed. You have
- 5:53Speaker 9: all seen the footage. It's foundational. Captivated by the film,
- 6:00Speaker 9: Meldrum started reading about the creature, typing out passages from
- 6:05Speaker 9: library books on his mother's typewriter to assemble his own
- 6:09Speaker 9: research archive. Gradually, Meldrum moved on to conventional science. He
- 6:17Speaker 9: received bachelors and Masters in zoology at Brigham Young, earned
- 6:23Speaker 9: a PhD in anatomical Sciences from State New York State
- 6:28Speaker 9: University of New York at Stonybrook. Taught Duke University Medical
- 6:34Speaker 9: Center and Northwestern University Medical Center before landing in Idaho
- 6:41Speaker 9: state nineteen ninety three. Bigfoot ambled back into his life
- 6:46Speaker 9: in ninety six when an amateur investigator asked Meldrum to
- 6:50Speaker 9: inspect fresh footprints alongside a muddy road in the Blue
- 6:54Speaker 9: Mountains of eastern Washington. Meldrum arrived prepared to debunk the
- 7:00Speaker 9: whole thing, but examining the tracks thirty five in all,
- 7:04Speaker 9: each about sixteen inches long. He was quote flabbergasted contemplating
- 7:11Speaker 9: those tracks. Meldrum told the Desiree News there was actually
- 7:16Speaker 9: this little moment where this angel sits on my shoulder
- 7:19Speaker 9: and says, do you really want to go down this path?
- 7:22Speaker 9: And the devils on the other saying could you not
- 7:27Speaker 9: throwing himself into Bigfoot dumb. Meldrum built up a collection
- 7:32Speaker 9: of more than three hundred casts of footprints in his lab,
- 7:36Speaker 9: produced an open source library of three D scans, sent
- 7:43Speaker 9: hair simples that he and other investigators collected to colleagues
- 7:47Speaker 9: for genetic sequencing without definitive results, and conducted his own
- 7:53Speaker 9: field work in remote wildernesses for weeks at a time.
- 7:59Speaker 9: Funded by a private donor, Meldrum taught only conventional science
- 8:09Speaker 9: classes at Idaho State, though the creature became the almost
- 8:14Speaker 9: exclusive focus of his research, creating some embarrassment and friction
- 8:21Speaker 9: at the school. News Day in six described him as
- 8:26Speaker 9: being lambasted by colleagues.
- 8:29Speaker 8: One could do.
- 8:30Speaker 9: Deep ocean research for SpongeBob SquarePants. That doesn't make it science,
- 8:36Speaker 9: a colleague told the paper for the Bigfoot Faithful. The
- 8:41Speaker 9: alleged alienation within academia was a badge of honor, though
- 8:47Speaker 9: Meldrum occasionally insisted that storyline was exaggerated. Janet Lockstromann, chair
- 8:54Speaker 9: of the Department of Biological Sciences at Idaho State, said
- 9:00Speaker 9: he was a well liked member of our department. He
- 9:06Speaker 9: wasn't an in your face argumentative person, and I think
- 9:12Speaker 9: by and large the faculty here felt he was a
- 9:16Speaker 9: very good colleague, even if they may not have appreciated
- 9:21Speaker 9: his research focus. Within the Bigfoot community, of course, he
- 9:27Speaker 9: was revered. This subject has always been a light that
- 9:32Speaker 9: attracts a lot of strange moths, says Cliff Barrickman, an
- 9:38Speaker 9: amateur researcher and founder of a Bigfoot museum in Boring
- 9:44Speaker 9: oregond But doctor Meldrum was such a conservative, sober representative
- 9:50Speaker 9: of the subject. His stature and seriousness legitimized everyone else's passion.
- 9:58Speaker 9: Even his harsh critics could not say that he was
- 10:02Speaker 9: an idiot or a lunatic. They could only say they
- 10:07Speaker 9: thought he was in correct.
- 10:11Speaker 8: So the search for Bigfoot continues. I mean that video
- 10:22Speaker 8: that you have all seen is now close.
- 10:29Speaker 9: To fifty years old. No, that's not right, close to
- 10:34Speaker 9: sixty years old. Nineteen sixty seven with bigfoot loping across
- 10:40Speaker 9: that dry creek. We've all seen it, right, I mean,
- 10:46Speaker 9: good gosh.
- 10:50Speaker 10: We are in Jackson, Wyoming on the Clark Eisenhower Outdoor. Addition,
- 10:54Speaker 10: I'm with guid Ryan Murtau out of Jackson Hole Anglers.
- 10:58Speaker 11: After a day on this river.
- 11:01Speaker 10: Ryan has just absolutely positively ruined trout fishing for us.
- 11:07Speaker 11: I mean.
- 11:10Speaker 10: Two of the last three years we've been on the
- 11:11Speaker 10: Snake with him. I didn't think we could duplicate two
- 11:15Speaker 10: years ago. I never expected to duplicate two years ago,
- 11:18Speaker 10: but my gosh, this was an unbelievable tray riot.
- 11:23Speaker 11: Yep.
- 11:24Speaker 12: I think it seems like you happen to bring the
- 11:26Speaker 12: heat with you, but you also happen to.
- 11:28Speaker 11: Bring the good fishing luck with you. So it's a
- 11:30Speaker 11: good trade off.
- 11:31Speaker 12: It's a good trade off. Yeah, we'll take some heat
- 11:32Speaker 12: if the fish are going to bait.
- 11:34Speaker 10: Well, I told you, it's like, man, we don't come
- 11:36Speaker 10: up here to be ninety three ninety four degrees.
- 11:39Speaker 11: We're trying to get away from that. We were on
- 11:41Speaker 11: the water.
- 11:42Speaker 10: It was the coolest morning we've had since we've been
- 11:45Speaker 10: up here.
- 11:46Speaker 11: I know it's warm this afternoon. It's supposed to be
- 11:48Speaker 11: warm for a couple more days. That did not seem
- 11:52Speaker 11: to affect the fish today. Yep.
- 11:54Speaker 12: It started out nice and chili, which was nice for us,
- 11:56Speaker 12: and the fish were they were a little slow this morning,
- 11:59Speaker 12: but then as heated episode of the fish.
- 12:00Speaker 10: So yeah, I don't know if you could consider that
- 12:03Speaker 10: a little slow. We're in deep trouble here.
- 12:08Speaker 11: Yeah.
- 12:08Speaker 12: Yeah, it was a good day though. I mean it
- 12:10Speaker 12: from start, from start to finish, we were in fish.
- 12:12Speaker 11: So this was only the second day. You told me
- 12:15Speaker 11: that this stretch, you have fished this stretch.
- 12:18Speaker 12: Yeah, So this stretch, it all depends on water level
- 12:20Speaker 12: for us, for safety, and so yeah, the water has
- 12:23Speaker 12: finally come down to a low enough level that we
- 12:25Speaker 12: can start putting drift boats down there, and.
- 12:27Speaker 11: So it got fished.
- 12:28Speaker 12: Yesterday was the first day that we got drift boats
- 12:31Speaker 12: down there, and today was the second day.
- 12:32Speaker 10: So well, there aren't many stupid trout, but I love
- 12:35Speaker 10: the fact that they obviously haven't seen a ton of flies.
- 12:38Speaker 12: Yet, right Yeah, yeah, no, those fish, they haven't been
- 12:41Speaker 12: fished too hard, and they're hungry and all those big
- 12:43Speaker 12: fish are starting to come back into the river and
- 12:44Speaker 12: they're done with their spawning for the season, looking for
- 12:47Speaker 12: a place to rest, rest up for the rest of
- 12:49Speaker 12: the summer.
- 12:50Speaker 10: You know, one of the one of one of the
- 12:52Speaker 10: cool things is that at most of them were caught
- 12:56Speaker 10: on top today with the dry fly.
- 12:57Speaker 11: That is so much fun. Yeah.
- 12:59Speaker 12: Yeah, we start with a hopper dropper and we were
- 13:02Speaker 12: getting quite a few fish on the nymph, and then
- 13:04Speaker 12: once they switched over to primarily the hopper, then we
- 13:07Speaker 12: cut that nymph off and didn't have as many tangles
- 13:10Speaker 12: to deal with and all that, and it's just kind
- 13:13Speaker 12: of more fun to catch them on the surface too.
- 13:14Speaker 11: How long will that last?
- 13:16Speaker 12: You know, on that stretch of the of the river,
- 13:18Speaker 12: we'll go probably tell well, they'll still eat drive flies
- 13:22Speaker 12: the rest of the season, but the way they're eating
- 13:24Speaker 12: them today will last another week week and half.
- 13:26Speaker 11: Oh that's it.
- 13:27Speaker 12: Yeah, yeah, that prolific feed unless we get a random
- 13:30Speaker 12: hatch going, which can happen and then they'll turn back on.
- 13:33Speaker 12: But we'll still always fish at hopper dropper to start
- 13:36Speaker 12: to see what's going on and then to kind of
- 13:38Speaker 12: do whatever the fish indicate us to do.
- 13:40Speaker 11: But so I again I want this emphasize.
- 13:44Speaker 10: On tape I was here at the right time of
- 13:46Speaker 10: year for the kind of fishing what we're doing.
- 13:48Speaker 12: That's correct. Yeah, Yeah, you hit the timing just right
- 13:50Speaker 12: for this. Yeah, second day that we fished the stretch.
- 13:53Speaker 12: We're pretty much the only ones that have started fishing
- 13:55Speaker 12: it so far. And yeah, the fish were eager and hungry.
- 13:59Speaker 11: So we're here.
- 14:00Speaker 10: We were on a Saturday. This is always a huge
- 14:05Speaker 10: time for tourists. It's a huge tourist season.
- 14:07Speaker 11: The town is packed.
- 14:09Speaker 10: If I'm down on the river and I'm seeing these
- 14:13Speaker 10: scores a boat, drift boats, whitewater boats, rafts at aft
- 14:19Speaker 10: after raft, I've gone, I just don't think this is
- 14:23Speaker 10: a place that I can fish today.
- 14:25Speaker 12: Yeah, And that's it's interesting because these fish are just
- 14:29Speaker 12: used to seeing all these boats go by, so they're
- 14:31Speaker 12: used to tons of raft because it's a very heavily
- 14:33Speaker 12: raft stretch of the Snake River, probably one of the
- 14:36Speaker 12: heaviest raft stretches even in the United States, and so
- 14:39Speaker 12: the fish seaboats going by all the time, so they're
- 14:42Speaker 12: kind of numb to the fact that boats are floating by.
- 14:44Speaker 12: We are just, you know, one of the boats with
- 14:47Speaker 12: fly rides and flies. So we tricked them pretty good.
- 14:50Speaker 11: There weren't too many of them, Kevin.
- 14:51Speaker 10: How many rafts were on the water today, people whitewater rafting,
- 14:55Speaker 10: one or two other fishing boats while we were on
- 14:57Speaker 10: the waters, about all we saw.
- 14:58Speaker 12: Yeah, yeah, there is one stream from us, but they
- 15:01Speaker 12: never came down past us. So we were the first
- 15:04Speaker 12: boat to fish that stretch through today. And you know,
- 15:07Speaker 12: the hardest part was probably just managing in between the
- 15:10Speaker 12: rafts and not catching rafters as they went by.
- 15:13Speaker 4: Yeah.
- 15:13Speaker 11: Yeah, you kept saying, hey, watch behind you. Yeah. Yeah,
- 15:17Speaker 11: that's never good to catch a rafter on the back cat. Yeah.
- 15:20Speaker 10: We probably could have walked across the river a couple
- 15:22Speaker 10: of times and not gotten our feet wet.
- 15:24Speaker 11: Yeah. Yeah, there is a stretch there.
- 15:26Speaker 12: There are two stretches where you literally could almost walk
- 15:28Speaker 12: bout the boat.
- 15:29Speaker 11: But you know what, it didn't matter.
- 15:31Speaker 10: I mean, if you're not catching fish, I'm going, well,
- 15:35Speaker 10: of course we're not catching fish. There's too many danged
- 15:37Speaker 10: people on the water. But that's not necessarily the case.
- 15:40Speaker 12: Is That's not yeah, not the case down here, because
- 15:42Speaker 12: you know, ninety nine percent of the people that go
- 15:45Speaker 12: down there aren't fishing, so so yeah, it doesn't really affect.
- 15:48Speaker 10: Us so up until yesterday you have been fishing stretches
- 15:52Speaker 10: of river closer to town.
- 15:54Speaker 11: That's correct.
- 15:54Speaker 12: Yeah, that white water stretch is kind of the last
- 15:56Speaker 12: stretch of the snake south of town that dumps into
- 15:59Speaker 12: Palis Reservoir. And everything that we've been fishing prior to that,
- 16:03Speaker 12: we've been either taken out at that put in for
- 16:05Speaker 12: the white water or fishing stretches higher up.
- 16:07Speaker 10: And this is these are almost entirely native cutthroat trout right, yep.
- 16:13Speaker 12: Yeah, this fishery is a native fishery, and we were
- 16:15Speaker 12: kind of take pride in that, and we protect these fish,
- 16:17Speaker 12: and so we try and keep the natives out of
- 16:19Speaker 12: out of the watershed, and yeah, keep the fish happy
- 16:22Speaker 12: and healthy, not stocked.
- 16:23Speaker 11: They're different.
- 16:25Speaker 10: Species of cutthroat, a couple of different did I hear
- 16:28Speaker 10: you say?
- 16:29Speaker 12: Yeah, there's a bunch of different subspecies of cutthroat trout
- 16:31Speaker 12: in the particular zone that we're in.
- 16:33Speaker 11: Is the Snake River cutthroat or the find spotted cutthroat trout.
- 16:36Speaker 12: And if you go to north a little bit into Yellowstone,
- 16:39Speaker 12: you'd find that Yellowstone cutthroat trout, and then you have
- 16:42Speaker 12: Bonneville cutthroat trout. A bunch of different species, but they're
- 16:44Speaker 12: all in different watersheds.
- 16:46Speaker 10: They're in different watersheds, so they don't necessarily inter breed.
- 16:50Speaker 11: They did, yeah, no, okay, yep, yep, different different rivers, and.
- 16:53Speaker 10: You don't want you don't want rainbow trout at this river, right.
- 16:59Speaker 12: Yeah, on our side, the Wyoming side, we don't necessarily
- 17:03Speaker 12: like seeing the rainbows. They're fun to catch and like
- 17:06Speaker 12: any trout, but they spawn in the spring at the
- 17:09Speaker 12: same time as a cutthroat, and then we can get
- 17:11Speaker 12: a hybrid fish what is called a cut bow, and
- 17:13Speaker 12: we just yeah, we try to keep those out of
- 17:15Speaker 12: the water so that we can keep the breeding fish happy.
- 17:18Speaker 11: Okay, because cut bows don't breed, that's right. Yeah, yep.
- 17:21Speaker 11: It's kind of like a mule or a steril steril fish. Yep.
- 17:24Speaker 10: So you have a pure strain of cutthroat, no rainbows.
- 17:29Speaker 10: Would call it one small brown trout. You said, there's
- 17:32Speaker 10: a few, but but you don't see a.
- 17:34Speaker 11: Ton, right, Yeah.
- 17:35Speaker 12: Usually in the season on the Whitewater stretch, I'll catch
- 17:38Speaker 12: a handful of them anywhere, depending on the season, Six
- 17:41Speaker 12: to twelve total for the whole season.
- 17:43Speaker 11: Yep. So we found one today.
- 17:45Speaker 10: My first fish of the day was a whitefish, explained
- 17:48Speaker 10: to our listeners who may not know what that is.
- 17:51Speaker 12: Yeah, so it's a Rocky Mountain whitefish, which is another
- 17:53Speaker 12: native species here. They're super fun fish as well, but
- 17:56Speaker 12: they mainly feed on nymphs. Their mouths are kind of
- 17:59Speaker 12: on the bottom of their head there, so it's hard
- 18:01Speaker 12: for them to feed on the surface, which they do
- 18:04Speaker 12: surface feed, but they're really hard to catch on dry
- 18:06Speaker 12: flies because they have to actually come.
- 18:07Speaker 11: Up over top of the fly to eat it. They
- 18:09Speaker 11: look like almost like a sucker.
- 18:11Speaker 12: Yeah, kind of like a sucker bone fish combat it's
- 18:14Speaker 12: a scaled fish.
- 18:15Speaker 11: Yeah, yeah, way to put it. We only caught one
- 18:17Speaker 11: today though, Yeah, we only caught one. Yeah. They fairly
- 18:20Speaker 11: prolific in the river.
- 18:21Speaker 12: Yes, Yeah, there's a lot of there's a lot of
- 18:24Speaker 12: white fish in the river, and when you're fishing nymphs
- 18:26Speaker 12: is when you're gonna catch them.
- 18:27Speaker 11: Yeah.
- 18:27Speaker 10: Well, but I had a dropper a lot of the
- 18:29Speaker 10: day on but I think the cutthroat were so hungry
- 18:32Speaker 10: that we're beating them to it.
- 18:33Speaker 11: Yeah. Yeah, and yep, today that's that was good for us.
- 18:36Speaker 12: Some days it's the opposite of that, and you're trying
- 18:38Speaker 12: to beat the white fish off with the stick to
- 18:40Speaker 12: get the nymph to the to the trout.
- 18:43Speaker 10: I know you have people who love to fish, like
- 18:46Speaker 10: September into October fall season. Yeah, the water will the
- 18:50Speaker 10: water will probably cool down even more, and certainly the
- 18:52Speaker 10: weather will cool down.
- 18:54Speaker 12: Yes, Yeah, so we'll get to the point here where
- 18:56Speaker 12: it's the water's getting really hot and the fish become
- 18:59Speaker 12: lethargic and they just don't want to feed as much.
- 19:01Speaker 12: And then as the temperatures drop off, then those fish
- 19:04Speaker 12: will get back into a feeding cycle. And so in
- 19:06Speaker 12: September and October and in the brown trout spawn in October,
- 19:09Speaker 12: and so.
- 19:09Speaker 11: That's actually a good time to be fishing for brown trout.
- 19:11Speaker 10: It's a little like Texas and that August is a
- 19:14Speaker 10: little bit of the dog days.
- 19:16Speaker 11: Yeah, yep.
- 19:16Speaker 12: It could be windy, it can be hot, it can
- 19:18Speaker 12: be smoky out here, especially this year it's probably gonna
- 19:21Speaker 12: be pretty smoky. So it's been dry, it's been dry
- 19:24Speaker 12: and hot. Yeah, so in the whole Rocky Mountain West.
- 19:26Speaker 12: So it doesn't necessarily mean we have to have fires nearby,
- 19:29Speaker 12: but they could be in California and we'll get the
- 19:31Speaker 12: smoke over here.
- 19:32Speaker 10: You have gotten you had a pretty good snowpack, did
- 19:36Speaker 10: you not this year?
- 19:37Speaker 12: Yeah, we had a good snowpack, pretty average year for us,
- 19:41Speaker 12: over four hundred inches of snow.
- 19:43Speaker 11: And what was kind of.
- 19:44Speaker 12: Nice for the fishery is it it was cold really
- 19:47Speaker 12: late into the spring, and so it prolonged that runoff,
- 19:50Speaker 12: which is good for the fish. It's hard on us
- 19:52Speaker 12: as fishermen because that makes the runoff season much longer,
- 19:56Speaker 12: but it kept the water temperatures down for us.
- 19:58Speaker 10: So you were tell tell me you had a little
- 20:02Speaker 10: experience with some saltwater fish recently.
- 20:06Speaker 11: Yep, yep.
- 20:06Speaker 12: I headed down south and was kind of on the
- 20:09Speaker 12: Florida Alabama line fishing just off the coast, and yeah,
- 20:13Speaker 12: it was a good experience, yep, being with those guides
- 20:16Speaker 12: down there, and we got on some fish on the
- 20:18Speaker 12: fly and might have turned a circle hook fisherman into
- 20:22Speaker 12: a fly fly fisherman. We'll see if he ends up
- 20:24Speaker 12: buying a fly ride or not.
- 20:26Speaker 10: So you had to kind of talk the guide into,
- 20:30Speaker 10: first of all, believing that you actually could catch a
- 20:33Speaker 10: couple of fish on the fly, because I'm sure he
- 20:36Speaker 10: probably had never had a fly fisherman in his pope before.
- 20:39Speaker 12: Yeah, No, I think I was maybe the first fly
- 20:41Speaker 12: fisherman he's ever had. And you know, I talked to
- 20:43Speaker 12: him prior and told him I had to ride with me,
- 20:45Speaker 12: and he said it was all right to bring it
- 20:47Speaker 12: on the boat. And I think it was just kind
- 20:48Speaker 12: of more amusing me than anything at first. And then
- 20:52Speaker 12: once we got out on a we were fishing like
- 20:54Speaker 12: a man maids.
- 20:55Speaker 11: It was like an old chicken semi truck that they
- 20:57Speaker 11: sunk out there.
- 20:58Speaker 12: There was a bunch of Spanish mackerel out there, feeding
- 21:02Speaker 12: off near to the surface, and we'd see him coming
- 21:04Speaker 12: by and just get in position and cast out to
- 21:07Speaker 12: him and strip it as fast as I could. And yeah,
- 21:09Speaker 12: we got a decent number of Spanish mackerel and a
- 21:11Speaker 12: king mackerel.
- 21:12Speaker 11: And you caught a thirty pound king mackerel. That's a
- 21:14Speaker 11: heck of a mac Yeah, thirty pound king on an
- 21:17Speaker 11: eight eight way fly ride. Yeah. Yeah, he took a
- 21:19Speaker 11: little line up about it, took a little.
- 21:20Speaker 12: Line and took a little time to get him in
- 21:22Speaker 12: and we couldn't just like couldn't pull him into the boat. Yeah,
- 21:25Speaker 12: went down to the backing, almost to the backing, Yeah,
- 21:28Speaker 12: almost as the backing, but not.
- 21:29Speaker 11: All the way to the back now, Mike scorching runs.
- 21:31Speaker 11: As you very well know. When you first you're thinking, man,
- 21:34Speaker 11: I'm not gonna a line love. Yeah, yeah, No.
- 21:36Speaker 12: I think I was lucky you had the metal leader
- 21:39Speaker 12: tip on there, and otherwise that fish would have been gone.
- 21:41Speaker 10: I'm also fascinated with your second job around here. You
- 21:44Speaker 10: were talking about it on the way back.
- 21:47Speaker 11: Tell our listeners what else you do.
- 21:50Speaker 12: Yeah, So in the winter time, I'm a back country
- 21:53Speaker 12: ski guide. So we ski primarily in grant Teeta National
- 21:56Speaker 12: Park and it's none of it's lift access, so it's
- 21:58Speaker 12: all human access skiing, so we'll spend most of the day.
- 22:03Speaker 11: It's called skinning. When you use your skis to get
- 22:06Speaker 11: up the hill.
- 22:06Speaker 12: We put a special mohair fabric on the bottom of
- 22:09Speaker 12: the skis and it allows us to go uphill and
- 22:11Speaker 12: your heel is disconnected from the ski and then once
- 22:13Speaker 12: you get to the top, you click in and then
- 22:15Speaker 12: take those skins off and then you ski down.
- 22:17Speaker 11: So that sounds like a really lot of work to me.
- 22:21Speaker 12: It's a lot of work, but big reward as well,
- 22:24Speaker 12: so you don't you don't see a lot of people
- 22:25Speaker 12: out there and you usually get to ski some fresh powder.
- 22:27Speaker 11: Which is pretty fid You do search and rescue as well.
- 22:30Speaker 12: That's correct, Yep, that's that's twenty four to seven, three
- 22:33Speaker 12: sixty five.
- 22:34Speaker 11: You're always home call, always on call.
- 22:35Speaker 12: We actually got a call out while we're fishing today,
- 22:38Speaker 12: but luckily there's thirty six of us on the team
- 22:41Speaker 12: and at any given point, you know, hopefully fifteen to
- 22:44Speaker 12: twenty people were actually able to respond to that incident
- 22:47Speaker 12: and help the person out.
- 22:47Speaker 10: Okay, so this time of year, I'm just guessing these
- 22:51Speaker 10: are people who say, Hey, I'm gonna go clog a
- 22:53Speaker 10: Grand Teton today that don't know what they're doing.
- 22:56Speaker 12: Some we do get some climbing accidents. The vast majority
- 22:59Speaker 12: of this time of year a mountain bikers and horseback riders. Okay, yeah,
- 23:02Speaker 12: so yeah, we get a lot of bike crashes and
- 23:04Speaker 12: a lot of horse wrecks that are going on.
- 23:08Speaker 11: Tell me about the helicopter trading you did yesterday.
- 23:11Speaker 12: Yeah, so yesterday we're doing a special special teams training,
- 23:14Speaker 12: which is the short Haul team. And short haul basically
- 23:18Speaker 12: is a team where we fly under the helicopter on
- 23:21Speaker 12: a rope. It could be one hundred and fifty foot
- 23:22Speaker 12: rope or two hundred and fifty foot rope and short
- 23:25Speaker 12: haul stands for like it's a short distance that we
- 23:28Speaker 12: haul someone, So we'll pick them up at point A
- 23:30Speaker 12: and haul them a short distance to point B, and
- 23:32Speaker 12: that's usually to an ambulance.
- 23:34Speaker 11: You're not breaking them up into the helicopter.
- 23:37Speaker 12: Correct, Yeah, yeah, So usually they're in terrain that we
- 23:39Speaker 12: can't land the helicopter at. So we'll come in on
- 23:42Speaker 12: the bottom of the line and the helicopter pilot will
- 23:45Speaker 12: set us down as close as possible to the patient
- 23:47Speaker 12: and then we'll get them packaged, and then we also
- 23:49Speaker 12: clip them into the line with us, and then we'll
- 23:51Speaker 12: fly them out under the helicopter to a location.
- 23:55Speaker 11: What's the most serious incident you've had so far this.
- 24:02Speaker 12: We had a pretty bad bike accident on Tee Time Pass.
- 24:06Speaker 12: There's some really kind of intense downhill biking runs on
- 24:11Speaker 12: the pass and they require a high level of skill
- 24:15Speaker 12: and if you mess up, there's pretty high consequence for it.
- 24:17Speaker 12: So we had an individual that messed up on a
- 24:21Speaker 12: probably like a thirty foot mandatory air jump, landed very poorly,
- 24:25Speaker 12: and we ended up happening that we got two helicopters
- 24:28Speaker 12: involved with him, so we helicoptered him to a life
- 24:31Speaker 12: flight helicopter. So we don't offer like a medical service
- 24:34Speaker 12: at all. So we short hauled him to a location
- 24:37Speaker 12: where another life flight helicopter was waiting. They loaded him
- 24:39Speaker 12: in the helicopter and then flew him to Idaho Falls,
- 24:43Speaker 12: which where they have a higher care facility.
- 24:45Speaker 10: All right, So I'm not going to tell you that
- 24:48Speaker 10: if you fish with this guy, you're gonna have two
- 24:51Speaker 10: days like we.
- 24:52Speaker 11: Have had with him.
- 24:53Speaker 10: I won't do that, but I will tell you when
- 24:57Speaker 10: we come back, if we have another day life like this,
- 25:01Speaker 10: you're you're in deep trouble.
- 25:02Speaker 11: That's I mean, let's get out. I'm gonna move in
- 25:05Speaker 11: with you.
- 25:06Speaker 12: Yeah, it's gonna be hard to keep replicating what you
- 25:08Speaker 12: guys have done, but if you can, if you keep
- 25:11Speaker 12: coming at the same time of year and keep bringing
- 25:13Speaker 12: the hot weather with.
- 25:14Speaker 11: You, I think the fishing might keep doing what it's doing.
- 25:17Speaker 10: And how good would it have been today if you
- 25:19Speaker 10: had people who actually knew how to fly fish?
- 25:21Speaker 12: Well, I think I think I did have people that
- 25:23Speaker 12: knew how how how to fly fish on my boat.
- 25:25Speaker 12: So we missed a few hook sets but we got
- 25:28Speaker 12: a lot of hooks ats.
- 25:30Speaker 10: This was an unbelievable day again on the Snake River.
- 25:34Speaker 10: What's the best way to folks uh to get in
- 25:37Speaker 10: touch with you if they want to come up here
- 25:39Speaker 10: and float the Snake and and fish with you.
- 25:42Speaker 11: The best way is probably to go online and you can.
- 25:44Speaker 12: You can just google Jackson Hole Anglers and then you'll
- 25:48Speaker 12: you'll have contact information on there. You'll you'll end up
- 25:50Speaker 12: talking to Dave and then yeah, if you're interested in
- 25:54Speaker 12: fishing with me, you can just request me as a guide,
- 25:57Speaker 12: and then all of our guide staff are super profess
- 26:00Speaker 12: and well trained fishermen.
- 26:01Speaker 10: Look, it's not a coincidence. Okay, it's not a coincidence.
- 26:06Speaker 10: So two of the top three or four trout fishing
- 26:08Speaker 10: days I've ever had have been with this guy in
- 26:10Speaker 10: the last three years. I can't thank you enough for
- 26:13Speaker 10: your patients and taking care of it.
- 26:15Speaker 11: You're very welcome. It's a pleasure fishing with you.
- 26:17Speaker 10: Ryan Murtau from Jackson Hole Anglers here on the Clark
- 26:21Speaker 10: Eisenhower Outdoor Edition.
- 26:24Speaker 11: I know you have.
- 26:25Speaker 9: Heard me talk about Ryan and the Snake River and
- 26:29Speaker 9: Jackson Hole before because we have fished it twice now
- 26:34Speaker 9: in the last three to four years, and just both unbelievable.
- 26:41Speaker 9: Both trips just outrageously successful. If you determine success by
- 26:49Speaker 9: having any fish you catch. I can't send you up
- 26:53Speaker 9: there and say you're gonna raise sixty seventy cutthroat trout
- 26:58Speaker 9: today on the Snake River.
- 27:00Speaker 8: I mean, that's you just can't do that.
- 27:03Speaker 9: But we have had two extraordinary days on the river,
- 27:09Speaker 9: and very different. The first one, as we've discussed before,
- 27:15Speaker 9: it was really hot, really warm, and Ryan was expecting
- 27:19Speaker 9: nothing and we had an all time day. This one
- 27:25Speaker 9: a year and a half or so ago, wasn't quite
- 27:28Speaker 9: as warm. We did a stretch of river that had
- 27:35Speaker 9: just been opened because of the runoff and the rapids.
- 27:44Speaker 9: There were tons of people that day.
- 27:47Speaker 8: It happened.
- 27:48Speaker 9: I think it happened to be a Saturday. I didn't
- 27:50Speaker 9: think about it. Tons of people on the river floating,
- 27:53Speaker 9: not fishing, you know, rafting on the rapids. And I'm
- 28:01Speaker 9: just asking Ryan, and you know, like we just did.
- 28:04Speaker 9: It's like, hey, why are these fish biting when all
- 28:09Speaker 9: of these rafts are just everywhere. I guess they get
- 28:13Speaker 9: used to them. So, like I said, I can't send
- 28:17Speaker 9: you up there and promise you that kind of day
- 28:21Speaker 9: on the Snake River. But it's uh, it was fun.
- 28:31Speaker 9: I gotta tell you we will do it again. I mean,
- 28:35Speaker 9: and I can't expect that. I mean, you just you
- 28:37Speaker 9: can't expect that. Loco Ranch Pond Management, locally owned. John

- 32:24Speaker 9: On Thursday, a coyote attacked and chased a nine year
- 32:29Speaker 9: old Portland, Oregon child while playing hide and seek in
- 32:38Speaker 9: their own yard. The attack occurred last week in the
- 32:43Speaker 9: neighborhood of Alamede in Portland, where a nine year old
- 32:45Speaker 9: and a three year old were playing hide and seek
- 32:47Speaker 9: when a coyote approached a nine year old bit him
- 32:50Speaker 9: on the foot. The nine year old, wearing socks, was
- 32:54Speaker 9: able to shake their foot out of the sock and
- 32:57Speaker 9: run away.
- 32:59Speaker 8: The seeded to chase the nine.
- 33:01Speaker 9: Year old until the child's father, who was on the
- 33:04Speaker 9: front porch, began yelling at the animal. Child taken to
- 33:10Speaker 9: local hospital treated for minor injuries. The vast majority of
- 33:19Speaker 9: encounters with coyotes, and I know you've heard this before,
- 33:25Speaker 9: are entirely benign, said a spokesperson for the Department of
- 33:33Speaker 9: Fishing Wildlife. Yeah, entirely benign. Tell that to the poor child.
- 33:49Speaker 9: And of course this is Portland. They don't have guns
- 33:51Speaker 9: in Portland. Guns are evil, so can't shoot the coyote
- 33:58Speaker 9: If you did, you'd go to Jay. We all know
- 34:03Speaker 9: what's going on in Portland. Several people sent me this
- 34:10Speaker 9: this week.
- 34:12Speaker 8: Great story.
- 34:15Speaker 9: In Mississippi, several monkeys used for animal testing were shot
- 34:22Speaker 9: and killed while a truck carrying them overturned on a Mississippi.
- 34:28Speaker 8: Road Tuesday afternoon.
- 34:31Speaker 9: According to the Jasper County Sheriff's Office, the crash happened
- 34:34Speaker 9: on I fifty nine near mile marker one seventeen north
- 34:38Speaker 9: of Heidelberg, Mississippi. The truck was carrying Reese's monkeys to
- 34:45Speaker 9: a testing facility in Florida from Tulane in New Orleans.
- 34:56Speaker 9: Initial information from the Sheriff's office said the monkeys were
- 34:59Speaker 9: said to be carrying hepatitis, C, herpes, and COVID, described
- 35:08Speaker 9: as forty pounds, an aggressive.
- 35:12Speaker 8: And sick. Now, i'll put that part in.
- 35:17Speaker 9: Tulane University disputed that information about the diseases, issuing a
- 35:24Speaker 9: statement non human primates at the Tulane National Biomedical Research
- 35:27Speaker 9: Center provided to other research organizations to advance scientific discovery.
- 35:33Speaker 9: The primates in question belong to another entity and are
- 35:36Speaker 9: not infectious. We're actively collaborating with local authorities and we'll
- 35:42Speaker 9: send a team of animal care experts to assist as needed.
- 35:49Speaker 9: The Sheriff's office initially said all the monkeys escaped the
- 35:52Speaker 9: truck and all but one were shot, but in an
- 35:57Speaker 9: updated post, authorities reported three monkey were still on the
- 36:03Speaker 9: loose and in fact remained on the loose yesterday as
- 36:08Speaker 9: searchers with masks, face shields and other protective gears scoured
- 36:15Speaker 9: fields along the rural highway. Still remains unclear who the
- 36:23Speaker 9: monkeys belonged to. Authorities say most of the twenty one
- 36:31Speaker 9: monkeys were killed. Reese's monkeys are typically about sixteen pounds,
- 36:43Speaker 9: among the most medically studied on the planet. The truck
- 36:51Speaker 9: wasn't at the scene yesterday, Searchers and gear were seen
- 36:56Speaker 9: still going through the grass. The facility, according to Tulane,
- 37:08Speaker 9: made changes in its procedures, retrained staff. Tulane made a
- 37:14Speaker 9: slight change to the name of the facility, replacing primate
- 37:19Speaker 9: with the word biomedical.
- 37:26Speaker 8: Earlier this year. So there you go, now.
- 37:37Speaker 11: More.
- 37:40Speaker 8: This is in a New Jersey. I believe.
- 37:46Speaker 9: Police able to capture a cat at the scene, but
- 37:51Speaker 9: were shocked by the absolute carnage it had wrought. Animal
- 37:57Speaker 9: control officer Robert Lago in a Facebook post says the
- 38:02Speaker 9: amount of blood on this couple's driveway was absolutely shocking,
- 38:09Speaker 9: though it had all came from a cat attack. Blairstown
- 38:14Speaker 9: Police Chief Scott Johnson telling a newspaper the couple were
- 38:17Speaker 9: sliced up, quote pretty much from head to toe. They
- 38:23Speaker 9: had been feeding it for like five years. This particular day,
- 38:31Speaker 9: they went out to their driveway and the cat just
- 38:34Speaker 9: viciously attacked them. Photos show the orange cat was suffering
- 38:43Speaker 9: from its own intense injuries, indicative of a run in
- 38:49Speaker 9: with a raccoon. The cat tested positive for RABIS, meaning
- 38:55Speaker 9: this poor couple is going to have to go through
- 38:57Speaker 9: those series of painful shots. Look, I'm very sorry for
- 39:04Speaker 9: this couple. I'm very sorry they got hurt, they got attacked.
- 39:10Speaker 9: But people, why are you feeding cats? Why are you
- 39:17Speaker 9: feeding stray cats? Why are you feeding any cats? Why
- 39:22Speaker 9: are you even near a cat? Why aren't you doing
- 39:28Speaker 9: your part to make this world more cat free? Not
- 39:37Speaker 9: cat friendly? Cat free? And I don't like them. I'm
- 39:46Speaker 9: going to tell you that right now. I think you
- 39:47Speaker 9: should probably already know that I don't like them. The
- 39:53Speaker 9: Cowboys Report is brought to you by SHILTI Roofing and
- 39:56Speaker 9: The Decker financial group.
- 39:58Speaker 7: It was after a hailstorm a few years back. I
- 40:00Speaker 7: needed a new roof. Yeah, I shopped around and then
- 40:02Speaker 7: I found Shorlty Roofing, and boy, I'm glad I did.
- 40:05Speaker 7: The folks at Shulty guided me every step of the way.
- 40:08Speaker 7: They showed me my options, They told me what my
- 40:10Speaker 7: out of pocket cost would be after insurance. They took
- 40:13Speaker 7: the complication out of an otherwise very stressful situation. They
- 40:16Speaker 7: took off the damage roof, put on the new roof,
- 40:19Speaker 7: did all the clean up, and I had my new
- 40:20Speaker 7: roof in one day, the whole by the roof.
- 40:30Speaker 16: The Dallas Cowboys are coming off one of their worst
- 40:32Speaker 16: performances of the season after their twenty point loss at
- 40:34Speaker 16: the hands of the Denver Broncos. But it's time to
- 40:36Speaker 16: turn the page up. Next to the Dallas Cowboys, they
- 40:38Speaker 16: will face Kyler Murray and the Arizona Cardinals at home
- 40:41Speaker 16: on Monday Night Football this upcoming week. And fun fact,
- 40:43Speaker 16: Kyler Murray has never lost a game at and T

- 40:50Speaker 17: No, I don't think so. Hopefully, it means he's due
- 40:53Speaker 17: to lose one.
- 40:54Speaker 6: Kyler.
- 40:55Speaker 17: Yeah, a few want to help, but no, I think
- 40:58Speaker 17: you know, obviously, you can't speak about Kyler Murray without
- 41:01Speaker 17: talking about what incredible player he was at Allen and
- 41:03Speaker 17: in high school and you know, one of maybe the
- 41:05Speaker 17: greatest high school quarterbacks of all time. He's in that discussion.
- 41:08Speaker 17: But you know, I'm sure he'll be excited to come
- 41:11Speaker 17: back here and very comfortable playing here. But again, you know,
- 41:15Speaker 17: whether you play at AT and T State and you
- 41:17Speaker 17: play out in Arizona, you play in a neutral site,
- 41:19Speaker 17: he's still a damn good football player. They're a good
- 41:21Speaker 17: football team and we're gonna have to play well to.
- 41:22Speaker 16: Be Cowboys and Cardinals. Monday night football kickoff is set
