- 0:02Speaker 1: The dream will destroy you. Let it.
- 0:06Speaker 2: All men are created equal. Some work hard in preseason.
- 0:09Speaker 2: When I went to college, guys were way smarter than me.
- 0:12Speaker 1: 4.0s, 3.0s.
- 0:12Speaker 2: They went to the Ivy League high schools, came to
- 0:15Speaker 2: Oakwood from these great high schools.
- 0:17Speaker 1: Most of them are not doing what I'm doing. Why?
- 0:19Speaker 1: Because it's not about where you come from. It's about heart.
- 0:23Speaker 3: You've got to let your dream destroy you. You've got
- 0:26Speaker 3: to give everything you've got. No excuses.
- 0:31Speaker 1: This is your opportunity to blow up.
- 0:33Speaker 3: If you really want your dream bad enough, if you
- 0:37Speaker 3: really want to go where you say you want to go,
- 0:40Speaker 3: if you really want to do what you say you
- 0:41Speaker 3: want to do, you have to let your dream destroy you.
- 0:45Speaker 4: You have to let your dream break you.
- 0:47Speaker 3: Down because that's the only way that you're going to
- 0:51Speaker 3: be built back up.
- 0:53Speaker 2: The version of you that you are right now is
- 0:56Speaker 2: a blessing, but it won't take you to the next level.
- 0:58Speaker 1: What got you here won't take you there.
- 1:00Speaker 2: So let the dream destroy you, tear you down, redefine you,
- 1:05Speaker 2: build you back up, make you stronger.
- 1:09Speaker 1: The first version of Eric.
- 1:10Speaker 2: Thomas would never be able to stand in front of
- 1:11Speaker 2: you guys. The first version of Eric Thomas, the high
- 1:14Speaker 2: school dropout, that guy would have never been able to
- 1:17Speaker 2: stand here and help you.
- 1:19Speaker 1: I had to destroy that Eric Thomas.
- 1:22Speaker 4: See, your problem is you talk a good game.
- 1:25Speaker 3: But at the first sign of adversity, at the first
- 1:28Speaker 3: sign of a setback, at the first sign of a hiccup,
- 1:31Speaker 3: at the first sign of something not going the way
- 1:33Speaker 3: you thought it should go, you quit.
- 1:36Speaker 1: Let the dream destroy you. Let it strip you. Let
- 1:40Speaker 1: it remake and mold you. Don't be afraid.
- 1:43Speaker 3: Pain is what's going to lead to that future gain.
- 1:47Speaker 3: You got to let your dream destroy you. You got
- 1:50Speaker 3: to give everything you got.
- 1:52Speaker 2: To be able at any moment to sacrifice what we
- 1:56Speaker 2: are for what we could be.
- 1:58Speaker 1: I don't do well in math. You're right. You ain't
- 2:00Speaker 1: never studied.
- 2:02Speaker 2: I'm not good in writing because you have never written before.
- 2:06Speaker 2: But I dare you to fail in writing for a
- 2:07Speaker 2: whole year to see if you can get to the end.
- 2:10Speaker 1: I dare you to fail.
- 2:11Speaker 2: I dare you to take that same class over and
- 2:13Speaker 2: over again. I dare you to stop dropping classes like
- 2:16Speaker 2: you saw. Would a real Eric Thomas please stand up?
- 2:21Speaker 2: Stop being this high school dropout. Stop giving up. Stop
- 2:24Speaker 2: sleeping on the streets and get your GED. Stop being
- 2:27Speaker 2: afraid to take a test. Stop being afraid to go
- 2:35Speaker 2: to college because your.
- 2:36Speaker 1: Daddy didn't go and your mama didn't go.
- 2:38Speaker 2: Stop being afraid and be the best Eric Thomas you
- 2:41Speaker 2: can be. But listen to me, it's going to be hard.
- 2:43Speaker 2: It took me 12 years to get a four-year degree, but.
- 2:45Speaker 1: I got it. And guess what? On a degree, it
- 2:47Speaker 1: don't have dates. So if it took you four and
- 2:50Speaker 1: it took me 12, it don't show up nowhere.
- 2:55Speaker 4: I need you to study like you've never studied before.
- 2:57Speaker 1: I need you up all night long.
- 2:59Speaker 2: Studying getting about three four hours here hour and a
- 3:02Speaker 2: half here two hours here You hear me say this
- 3:04Speaker 2: all the time, but some of you this is it
- 3:07Speaker 2: And even you say Eric look man, you understand if
- 3:09Speaker 2: I put everything.
- 3:10Speaker 1: And I'm still gonna get a 1.0.
- 3:12Speaker 2: I'm telling you to do it anyway Because you know,
- 3:15Speaker 2: I told up flunk English three times like when I
- 3:17Speaker 2: was in college, right?
- 3:18Speaker 1: Flunky the first time and.
- 3:20Speaker 2: I quit when they told me I couldn't pass the
- 3:22Speaker 2: second time She told me you're gonna flunk. I stayed
- 3:24Speaker 2: in there anyway And guess what? As stupid as this
- 3:27Speaker 2: might sound, even though you flunk, you learn.
- 3:29Speaker 1: A new concept, right?
- 3:32Speaker 2: So that's one or two less concepts I got to
- 3:33Speaker 2: learn the next year, right? And finally, that third time,
- 3:37Speaker 2: I clapped it, which means you just take a test.
- 3:40Speaker 4: And I took the test and I passed it. You
- 3:42Speaker 4: don't get it.
- 3:44Speaker 3: You have to give everything you got to get what
- 3:47Speaker 3: you want. You have to give everything you don't even
- 3:49Speaker 3: realize you have to get where you're trying to go.
- 3:54Speaker 3: Don't you get it? When you do what they want,
- 3:57Speaker 3: you will have what they don't. When you do what
- 3:59Speaker 3: they refuse, they won't have the options that you get
- 4:02Speaker 3: to choose. Because those are reserved for those who choose
- 4:07Speaker 3: to move when others choose to stand still. Those are
- 4:10Speaker 3: reserved for those that choose to get up when so
- 4:13Speaker 3: many others couldn't find the strength to lift up and
- 4:16Speaker 3: give more.
- 4:18Speaker 1: And when you get to the point where all you want.
- 4:21Speaker 2: To do is be successful, as bad as you want
- 4:24Speaker 2: to breathe, then you'll be successful. And I'm here to
- 4:26Speaker 2: tell you, number one, that most of you say you
- 4:29Speaker 2: want to be successful, but you don't want it bad.
- 4:31Speaker 2: You just kind of want it. You don't want it
- 4:34Speaker 2: badder than you want to party. You don't want it
- 4:36Speaker 2: as much as you want to be cool.
- 4:38Speaker 1: Most of you don't want success as much as you
- 4:40Speaker 1: want to sleep.
- 4:41Speaker 2: Some of you, you can make sacrifices when Monday Night
- 4:44Speaker 2: Football is not on. You can make a sacrifice. But
- 4:46Speaker 2: when the game come on, for some reason, you just
- 4:49Speaker 2: attach to it. You can make sacrifices on Sunday when
- 4:52Speaker 2: ain't nothing going on. But when your favorite show comes
- 4:55Speaker 2: on Monday, bam, some of you, you focus into the
- 4:57Speaker 2: phone ring.
- 4:58Speaker 1: And then you like, I gotta answer it. If I
- 5:00Speaker 1: don't answer the phone, I'm gonna die.
- 5:03Speaker 2: I'm saying to you today that there are some of you,
- 5:05Speaker 2: if you give up your cell phone, you would be successful.
- 5:09Speaker 1: But your cell phone is more important to you than
- 5:11Speaker 1: your success. You have to give it everything you got.
- 5:15Speaker 2: No more TV, no more parties, no more playing. If
- 5:18Speaker 2: you don't have a 4.0, what you need to be
- 5:20Speaker 2: doing is studying.
- 5:22Speaker 1: Get off the phone. I'm sorry, I'm not available until
- 5:25Speaker 1: the end of this year. No, I'm for real.
- 5:29Speaker 2: You've reached the right number, but you called me at
- 5:31Speaker 2: the wrong time. Call me back January 1st. I'm about
- 5:37Speaker 2: to get busy now. Every time you ever got in trouble,
- 5:45Speaker 2: somebody in your house got you out of it. Every
- 5:49Speaker 2: time you've done something you're not supposed to do. People say, Eric,
- 5:52Speaker 2: your mother's a tyrant.
- 5:53Speaker 1: You're right. She kicked me out. You're right. She's mean,
- 5:56Speaker 1: but she developed a man.
- 5:57Speaker 2: Because she put me out there and said, you're going
- 5:59Speaker 2: to have.
- 5:59Speaker 1: To grow up. And some of you have never learned
- 6:01Speaker 1: to grow up. And so every time something get hard,
- 6:04Speaker 1: you quit.
- 6:05Speaker 4: You call mama. I dare you to take a little pain.
- 6:09Speaker 1: I dare you. I dare you not to go home.
- 6:13Speaker 1: Somebody said, I got to go home. I feel bad.
- 6:15Speaker 1: Go through it. You ain't going to die at the end.
- 6:19Speaker 4: Of pain and success.
- 6:21Speaker 1: You're not going to die because you're feeling a little pain.
- 6:25Speaker 4: So let this be.
- 6:26Speaker 3: The time that you lift yourself back up. You did
- 6:30Speaker 3: it over and over again. Why stop now?
- 6:33Speaker 4: You're too close.
- 6:35Speaker 3: Success is right around the corner. And even if it
- 6:38Speaker 3: takes a little bit longer to get there.
- 6:41Speaker 1: It's okay, it's coming.
- 6:43Speaker 2: I gotta commit my very being to this thing. I
- 6:47Speaker 2: gotta breathe it, I gotta eat it, I gotta sleep it.
- 6:49Speaker 2: And until you get there, you'll never be successful in life.
- 6:53Speaker 2: But once you get there, I guarantee you, the world
- 6:55Speaker 2: is yours.
- 6:56Speaker 3: You already know sometimes you got to disappear for three months.
- 6:59Speaker 3: Sometimes you got to disappear for six months. Sometimes you
- 7:01Speaker 3: got to disappear for nine months. Sometimes you got to
- 7:04Speaker 3: disappear for a whole year, two years, and then emerge.
- 7:07Speaker 4: The new you.
- 7:09Speaker 3: The new and improved you. On an entirely different level. See,
- 7:14Speaker 3: your dream is like a muscle. And sometimes you got
- 7:18Speaker 3: to let that muscle get broke down.
- 7:21Speaker 1: The greats?
- 7:22Speaker 3: They don't even start counting the reps until it hurts
- 7:26Speaker 3: because they understand that pain is what's going to lead
- 7:29Speaker 3: to that future gain.
- 7:31Speaker 4: So from this day forward, excuses are for the weak.
- 7:34Speaker 3: So starting right now, not tomorrow, not next.
- 7:37Speaker 4: Week, I need you to vow to keep going.
- 7:40Speaker 1: It's when you have nothing left.
- 7:42Speaker 2: It's when you depleted all your money, when all your
- 7:44Speaker 2: energy gone, when you have nothing left, that's when it's showtime.
- 7:49Speaker 2: When you want this thing as bad as you want
- 7:51Speaker 2: to breathe, that's when you find a way. Listen to
- 8:00Speaker 2: me very closely. You got to change that mindset.
- 8:14Speaker 1: Thank you.
