- 0:00Happy Saturday morning. Everybody look like the rain.
- 0:08It's just missing St. Louis, MO.
- 0:13It's, it's just missing Saint Louis.
- 0:16Look, look at the legend today. Look at Louis.
- 0:20He finally found his spot. You know, sometimes he gets up
- 0:24and he's a nervous Nelly. He just, he's like me, OK, We
- 0:31have some business to get to before we talk about the new
- 0:34documentary out called Earnhardt Number one across America right
- 0:40now. That documentary, Earnhardt out
- 0:43on Prime, it's number one everywhere.
- 0:47So it must be really good. I have not watched it yet.
- 0:50If you've watched it, respond right here, somebody said
- 0:56Herman, we're going to make some decals as that say respond right
- 1:00here. OK, first thing is I am leaving
- 1:08today at 1:30 and I'm headed to Charlotte, NC OK, no more racing
- 1:14with me nowhere tonight. There's Pevely is not racing.
- 1:20Highland is not racing, Brownstown is not racing, no
- 1:24racing around here in Saint Louis.
- 1:27They, they just feel like the crowds are no good during the
- 1:31Memorial Day week and they give you give you some time off.
- 1:35There will be no swimming in Saint Louis.
- 1:38I got the pool cleaned up for nothing 'cause it's cold.
- 1:42But I was talking to my buddy Billy Smith and that's pretty
- 1:47normal for this time of the year.
- 1:48Always the end of May you're it's either feast or famine.
- 1:53I can remember plenty times it being cold and rain kind of that
- 1:57winter feel. So I am headed to Charlotte, NC
- 2:03for Trackside Live. So I'll see everybody at
- 2:06Trackside Live tomorrow at noon. Let me see we got Ryan Priest,
- 2:12Ricky Stenhouse, we got some good drivers.
- 2:17So come on out to Trackside Live tomorrow behind the main
- 2:20grandstands at the Charlotte Motor Speedway.
- 2:24I sure do enjoy doing that. So we're going to have a good
- 2:26time. All right, I want to talk about
- 2:30Dale Earnhardt Senior now. You know, you already know that
- 2:39Dale Earnhardt Senior was a friend of mine.
- 2:42What I'm doing is I'm giving you the disclaimers.
- 2:47You know, Herman, how can you talk about the man?
- 2:53Well, Big Brother Rusty was good friends with Dale Earnhardt,
- 2:57senior. And if you remember, before I
- 3:00became a race car driver, 1984, I was a crew chief in the Cup
- 3:06series on the Levi Garrett car driver Joe Rutman.
- 3:11So I had no, I've known senior either way and I think I think
- 3:16Dale Senior had a little respect for me because he remembered me
- 3:19doing everything. And my buddy Bobby Labonte,
- 3:23Bobby and me are me and Bobby and McGee.
- 3:29There's that, there's that ADH brain again.
- 3:33By the way, Bobby Labonte called me yesterday.
- 3:36I love Bobby. He is so good to me.
- 3:40He called me and he'll just say, I love you, Herman.
- 3:44And I'm like, Bobby, you're awesome.
- 3:46You know, not, not very many people like me.
- 3:49A lot. A lot of people don't know how
- 3:52to say I love you. Do you remember when Bobby
- 3:55Hamilton died and he did that interview with Wendy Venterini
- 4:00and he knew he was going to pass away when he was talking to
- 4:04Wendy Venterini and he looked at Wendy and he said, you know, I
- 4:08used to not be able to say I love you to people that I really
- 4:10liked. But now that I'm in this
- 4:13position, you know, Wendy, I really love you.
- 4:16So sometimes it's strange. It takes people to go through
- 4:18tough circumstances, you know, take the edge off of them.
- 4:23You know, sometimes people are on defense, you know, they've
- 4:25been roughed up in life and they just feel like everybody's out
- 4:29to get them and and, and they don't have a, you know, they're
- 4:33just, they're just on edge. But anyway, I love Bobby Labonte
- 4:37too. He's such a good guy.
- 4:41But Bobby Labonte and myself, we were crew members, we were
- 4:46fabricators, Then we became race car drivers.
- 4:50But Bobby Labonte and myself were super good friends to this
- 4:53day. Talk all the time.
- 4:55Talk all the time. He called me yesterday.
- 4:58I was in the grocery store. And Herman, of course, I answer
- 5:02the phone right away, you know, and he wanted to talk all about
- 5:06my health because Bobby's into his health too.
- 5:10Bobby Labonte's just like me, except maybe Moore.
- 5:14Bobby, you know, he was a he would ride that that bicycle and
- 5:19you know, he would do his deal do to keep his health going.
- 5:22Maybe that's why Dale Senior took a liking to me, because he
- 5:26remembered me from 1984. He also remembered me from St.
- 5:31Paul, MN when he ran his ASA car.
- 5:35That's right, Dale Earnhardt, Senior, had an ASA car, popped
- 5:39me in the ass, moved me. I saved it.
- 5:41I told you that story before, he said, Herman, I like you.
- 5:45I said why you like me, Earnart. He said, 'cause when I hit you
- 5:49in the ass, you had two choices to save it or spin out.
- 5:53I say that son of a bitch. St.
- 5:56Paul, MN turn 1-2. Then I made it to the Cup Series
- 6:02and he was good to me. I remember when I drove that
- 6:06deal #40 Dirt Devil Cup car, I was trying to get going at
- 6:10Bristol and I was bottoming out and Earnhardt come flying down
- 6:14and looked at Jeff Hammond. He and he said, Hammond, get
- 6:17this damn thing off the ground so that me and Herman can race
- 6:20each other. And Earnhardt's driving the
- 6:23number three GM Goodridge Chevrolet.
- 6:26But you know, Earnhardt knew I was pretty good at Bristol
- 6:28because he'd watch me in in the Bush series.
- 6:30Back in those days. I said Bush series used to make
- 6:34you all happy. Today it's the Xfinity series.
- 6:38What is the mystique of Dale Senior?
- 6:42What is the mystique of Dale Senior?
- 6:47Respond right here. Tell me, but I'm going to tell
- 6:49you this movie come out and I'm going to tell you now.
- 6:54This is about the 3rd or 4th movie.
- 6:56It ain't like this is a new movie, but this one is a true
- 7:00documentary, is what Chocolate Meyer said on X.
- 7:05I haven't watched it, but Chocolate Myers had a lot of
- 7:09heart. On Friday night I looked on X as
- 7:13I was going to bed and I'm strolling, Chocolate Myers said.
- 7:18My favorite documentary of my life was on any Sunday and I'm
- 7:23old enough to know what that was.
- 7:25That was a really kick ass movie slash documentary of a
- 7:29motorcycle rider. It was real.
- 7:31It all real documentary of real film.
- 7:36No actors. You know, they did like that.
- 7:39They did a documentary like that with Ayrton Senna where it was a
- 7:42movie slash documentary. So I'm taking it that this
- 7:49Earnhardt movie is a real documentary with real, real
- 7:54time, you know, film. They searched around and they
- 7:59found real film and put together a nice movie.
- 8:02I'm here, I'm hearing raved reviews.
- 8:05I'm here and everybody really likes it.
- 8:08But but kind of like Elvis. How can you make respond right
- 8:12here? I'm thinking this is the third
- 8:14or fourth Earnhardt movie. It's hard for me to watch
- 8:19because it's very sad to me. Earnhardt was so good to me.
- 8:24It's it's a moment in life where just damn it, you know, Superman
- 8:29died. How can how can Superman died?
- 8:33He had all the kryptonite. Earnhardt ain't supposed to die.
- 8:37He's the man. Just goes to show you that we
- 8:41all ain't so tough, are we? But what is the mystique?
- 8:46What is the deal with Dale Senior?
- 8:49Well, one thing, He was a man's man.
- 8:52One of the biggest things about seniors.
- 8:54Every man wanted to be him because he was so badass.
- 8:59Earnhardt defied everything. I'm going to keep my full face
- 9:03helmet on while all you kids wear these full face helmets.
- 9:09Let me say that again, Earnhardt.
- 9:12I'm going to keep my open face helmet on, Earnhardt said.
- 9:16I'm going to keep my open face helmet on and my bubble goggles
- 9:21while you all wear your full face helmets.
- 9:27He said that he told NASCAR. I'm going to keep my old
- 9:31Corvette seat while you all were use the safer seats.
- 9:37I remember Dale Junior saying I'm going to wear, I'm going to
- 9:40keep wearing my open face helmet like my daddy did.
- 9:44So Earnhardt defied everybody because he was a badass.
- 9:51He he he raced in an era where Jeff Burton was the one that
- 9:57said, let's run these seat containments, Let's run a Hans
- 10:01device, let's put all the safer walls up.
- 10:06And during that time, Earnhardt said, drop the rag, let's race.
- 10:13We all like that. He was rough around the edges,
- 10:17although that now that you look back, respectfully, this is very
- 10:22hard for me to say, but I'm going to say it.
- 10:25Dale Senior was wrong about all that.
- 10:28Dale Senior was wrong about all that.
- 10:30He should have had it all in his car.
- 10:33But he was the John Wayne. He was the James Dean.
- 10:37Because I'm going to wear my open face helmet.
- 10:40I'm going to run my seat the way I want to run my seat, He told,
- 10:45he told NASCAR. He said if I get hurt, I'm going
- 10:49to sue you. Well, he didn't get hurt.
- 10:52He got killed. What was it about Earnhardt?
- 10:57The pass through the grass where his car went into the grass and
- 11:02he didn't wreck for that All Star race against Bill Elliott?
- 11:07What was it about Earnhardt? Was it that everything was
- 11:09black? His car was black, His pants
- 11:11were black, always wore black pants.
- 11:14He was the man in black. He was in control of his car.
- 11:20Most people weren't in control of their car.
- 11:23They thought they were Big Brother Rusty.
- 11:27My brother Rusty Wallace would say, Herman, I can't do anything
- 11:31that Earnhardt does. When he wrecks a person,
- 11:34Earnhardt would wreck a person. The rest of us, when we would
- 11:37try to wreck somebody, we'd wreck ourselves trying to wreck
- 11:40that person. Earnhardt could pick a point out
- 11:44the wall and he'd say, I'm going to make you wreck right there.
- 11:46And Earnhardt would wreck and you'd land right there where he
- 11:49said Earnhardt was a badass. He wore cowboy boots.
- 11:54He listened to Lynyrd Skynyrd. Punchy Whitaker told me that,
- 11:59ah, I lived 27 years in Charlotte, NC, I know everybody.
- 12:07Punchy Whitaker, did you know that Dale Senior, when he was
- 12:11getting going, Dale Senior lived above a garage and I believe
- 12:15Punchy Whitaker rented him that little garage.
- 12:19Punchy loved Senior because he goes.
- 12:21I know, he says, I know that Dale Senior came from nothing.
- 12:26He had nothing. Dale Senior came from nothing.
- 12:28Is that what it is? Dale Senior came from nothing.
- 12:32He's the man in black. He direct you because you was in
- 12:36his way. That's why when I saw Senior
- 12:40coming, I moved out of the way because I didn't want to get
- 12:42wrecked. He wouldn't give you a half a
- 12:44straightaway. He would not give you a half a
- 12:47straightaway even though he said he might.
- 12:50That's where he learned in the Intimidator nickname.
- 12:54How did Dale Senior get the nickname Intimidator?
- 12:58I just told you he got the nickname The Intimidator because
- 13:01when you looked in your mirror, you moved the hell out of the
- 13:03way 'cause he wasn't going to spend no time with you.
- 13:07If he got to you and you didn't move out of the way, he, he, he,
- 13:10he'd bump you. And if you wrecked, it was your
- 13:13fault 'cause you didn't save it. Remember, for all these reasons,
- 13:18I, I still think he's ultra famous.
- 13:22I'm going to leave you with this.
- 13:25Dale Earnhardt senior is a man's man.
- 13:28You want wanted to be him? He wore cowboy boots.
- 13:34He wore black pants. Johnny Cash.
- 13:38He was like Johnny Cash. He was like James Dean.
- 13:44He was like Elvis. He was simply America a badass.
- 13:48He raced and he, he was just so cool.
- 13:53I'm a wreck. You man Can't believe he's gone.
- 13:58Cannot believe Dale Senior's gone.
- 14:00He was so good to me. He took an interest in me and
- 14:04maybe that's why I it's hard for me to watch the movies.
- 14:07Dale Senior let me drive my very first NASCAR race car, he said.
- 14:12Herman, come down and drive my GM Goodrich Chevrolet, the
- 14:17number 8. I finished 12th at Martinsville.
- 14:22Big Brother Rusty Wallace and Earnhardt were so close.
- 14:26I'll never forget that day at Martinsville.
- 14:30I hope you all enjoy the Earnhardt documentary.
- 14:35And by the way, they made that so you would watch Prime.
- 14:40I'm not getting prime. I'm 60 years old.
- 14:44I'm not paying another dime for prime.

- 14:53Did you know that if you order Amazon or you're buying all that
- 14:58stuff Amazon or, or you are a Prime member, you get it free.
- 15:03So if you get a lot of Amazon packages delivered to you and

- 15:18Prime. You've already got it.
