- 0:00Alright everybody, welcome back ladies and gentlemen to another
- 0:03episode of the Take Two pod with Mom and Dad.
- 0:07I'm dad and I'm mom. The kids are down.
- 0:12It has been a friggin weekend. This weekend has possibly been
- 0:17the worst weekend that we've had in.
- 0:20Months it's just been. Fucking bedlam.
- 0:23It's it's been bedlam. I mean the kids passed his nap
- 0:27phase. So now he wakes up at 6:30 and
- 0:31he's exhausted by noon, and then he sometimes powers through and
- 0:38then he's just a nightmare to deal with.
- 0:39From 3:00 PM till till bedtime, everything's.
- 0:45Nights he was overtired both both nights this weekend and our
- 0:50baby is a literal Angel on. Earth, yeah, but you can't put
- 0:54her down. She's just like.
- 0:55She's a Velcro baby, but she's so.
- 0:57Sweet and take a shit with her around.
- 0:59Like she like, yo, just let me put you down for a SEC.
- 1:03There's six 5600 toys in front of you.
- 1:06Just play with those for a minute.
- 1:07Please. Yeah, she sees me and she, like,
- 1:08needs. Me.
- 1:09Oh my God. Anyway, enough about the kids.
- 1:11OK, seriously, I don't want to talk about them.
- 1:13I'm so done. You good?
- 1:17You gonna be alright? Well, it's just I was watching
- 1:19this couple on Instagram that don't have any kids and I don't
- 1:23regret having kids for a minute. I absolutely love them.
- 1:26But they were like on a trip to Paris.
- 1:29She was wearing beautiful clothing.
- 1:31It just like looked so serene. And I was like just for couple
- 1:35weeks, I'd like that life and then come back to this one just
- 1:37for a. Couple weeks.
- 1:39I was saying this earlier of all the craziness that happened this
- 1:42weekend, there were some sweet little cute moments like when
- 1:46the four of us were playing downstairs and little man was
- 1:50like, I love when we played together like that's, you know,
- 1:55that's what I remember. I'm going to go to sleep
- 1:57tonight. Tomorrow I'm going to go get
- 1:59ready for work. I'm not gonna remember anything
- 2:01that the other crap, and he won't either.
- 2:03It's just gonna be the same new crap later in the evening.
- 2:06Maybe. We'll see.
- 2:07Let's think positive. Hopefully not, yeah.
- 2:09Alright, that's enough. Let's let's get on the show.
- 2:11All right, let's do it. All right, drum roll, mom.
- 2:19Nobody puts baby in the corner. We are tackling the classic
- 2:23Dirty Dancing this week, released in 1987, directed by
- 2:29Emil R Dolino, starring Patrick Swayze, Jennifer Grey and Jerry
- 2:34Orbach. Yes, Sir, Dirty Dancing.
- 2:38Dirty Dancing, one of my favorites.
- 2:40One for the ladies, one for the ladies.
- 2:43This movie had a budget of 4 million and did over 200 million
- 2:48worldwide which is mental for the time.
- 2:51Yeah, it was an instant classic. And the synopsis goes In 1963,
- 2:56Francis, baby houseman falls for resort dance instructor Johnny
- 3:01Castle at a Catskills resort. She steps in as a dance partner
- 3:06substitute for a final show, learning to dance, fighting for
- 3:11their romance, and confronting Class differences.
- 3:14Very accurate. I'm surprised that class
- 3:16differences art is in the synopsis.
- 3:18Well, I'm gonna talk about it quite a bit, yeah.
- 3:21You're gonna talk about. It in this episode.
- 3:24But I do I do like this movie. It's it's you know, it's not my
- 3:30typical movie that I kind of watch, but it has its charms and
- 3:34I know some people like yourself or you know, you're basically
- 3:38die hards of this movie, so. Yeah, like, similar to musicals,
- 3:41it's a little campy, it's a little silly, but it it brings a
- 3:45lot of joy. Like I found myself just like
- 3:48smiling a lot watching this. You're watching the people
- 3:51dancing. It gets you in the mood to move.
- 3:53Yeah, I noticed you had a grin on your face for like 92% of the
- 3:56movie. I was like.
- 3:57I was also just like grin blushing because Patrick Swayze
- 4:00is so sex in this movie. Oh my God he is pretty charming
- 4:04in this and his his outfits are pretty sharp.
- 4:06And his body is ridiculous. All right, let's, let's talk
- 4:12about the first time we watched this.
- 4:14Um, I'll go first because I do recall when you, when I watch
- 4:18this the first time, and it was a time where you showed it to
- 4:22me. You said this is one of my
- 4:23favorite movies and you're like, I'm making you watch this.
- 4:26And this was a like maybe years ago.
- 4:29And yeah, I do recall the first time I was kind of like, oht,
- 4:33you know, OK, it's dance movie. It's kind of like a musical a
- 4:36little bit, maybe not so much musical, but I enjoyed it the
- 4:40first time I watched it. It was, you know, it is exactly
- 4:43what I expected. I wasn't surprised by any of it,
- 4:46to be honest. Yeah, it's literally a feel good
- 4:48movie and. Also, I did finally connect a
- 4:54lot of the references that in popular culture that is made
- 4:58from this movie, so I was able to like make those.
- 5:00Conference, so the ass. Yeah, I was able to make those
- 5:03connections, but when was the first time you watched him?
- 5:06So the first time I watched it actually do remember.
- 5:10So this movie is from 1987. So it had its 20th anniversary
- 5:15in 2007, right? My mom comes home one day and
- 5:18she's holding like the DVD and it had a special sleeve on it.
- 5:23And it was the 20th anniversary version of Dirty Dancing.
- 5:26And it was like current day of that day.
- 5:29Jennifer Grey doing an introduction and talking about
- 5:32the movie. Like there was a whole like
- 5:34where she reflects on the movie and talks about it and
- 5:36everything. So my mom brings us home and
- 5:38she's like, we're going to watch this together.
- 5:40I saw this when I was young. I danced out of this movie.
- 5:44Oh my God, I love it so much. And it was a weekend like
- 5:48morning. I sat on the couch next to my
- 5:51mom. We watched this movie and we
- 5:52bonded so ridiculously. I still remember her commentary.
- 5:56Every time I watch it, I remember what she was saying.
- 5:59So it's like a very special. It was a very special.
- 6:02Experience her voice. Yeah, her commentary, It Stays
- 6:05with Me, is she planted seeds in my mind that I always hear, but
- 6:09this movie specifically, I always hear her voice.
- 6:11Remember what she said? I remember the scenes that she
- 6:13loved. Sure, sure.
- 6:14And. So you this movie is very close
- 6:16to your heart. Very close to my heart.
- 6:18And I I was a young teenager seeing it.
- 6:21I was like 14 or 15. Yeah.
- 6:23So it was the perfect time to see a movie like this, like it's
- 6:27a coming of age story about a teenage girl.
- 6:30It was the perfect time. So can I just say one thing?
- 6:32We have two copies of this movie in our home on DVD.
- 6:36I don't know where that second copy is from.
- 6:38You have, we have opened one and we have one that's never been
- 6:40opened. OK, that's yeah, they never know
- 6:421 I don't know where it's. From none of the copies.
- 6:44Just for the record, none of the copies are mine.
- 6:47OK, they're both your copies. I don't know why I have two.
- 6:51Whatever, we have two copies just in case Apocalypse happens
- 6:54and there's a fight over it. Case one of them breaks, we have
- 6:57the. Back so you mentioned that your
- 6:59mom danced out of this movie. As she said, when your mom
- 7:02dances like not like ice picture this movie.
- 7:07OK, I'm telling you this like I swear to God, and when I see
- 7:11this movie and I see some of the dancers, I'm like, oh, that's
- 7:13your mom's dance move 100%. So I think she's she's like
- 7:18she's based her all her dance moves on like maybe this movie
- 7:22and like two others. You know what I actually think
- 7:24of when my mom says she danced out of this movie?
- 7:27There's an episode of The Simpsons where Marge takes Lisa
- 7:30to a movie where there's dancing.
- 7:31Yeah. And it's like a beautiful busty
- 7:34girl who like, does basically similar, like ballroom dancing
- 7:37with this with this hot Spanish guy.
- 7:38And they do like all these dangerous dance moves.
- 7:40And Lisa Simpson does like some. Of the Brazil 1, it makes 6 look
- 7:44like a church. No, that's a different one.
- 7:46OK. But she does like a few little
- 7:48ballerina spins when she leaves the movie.
- 7:50Yeah. And I just that's that's my mom.
- 7:52I picture Lisa is my mom. Alright, well anyways.
- 7:57OK, so would you like to go first?
- 7:59Why do you love or hate this movie so much?
- 8:02I know you love it. You just told everybody.
- 8:04So I adore it. Just elaborate on it if you want
- 8:09or you kind of said your spiel there.
- 8:11Like I said, I saw it when I was a young teenager, so I saw it at
- 8:14the perfect time. It was a perfect time to just
- 8:17see a love story between this young girl and this guy.
- 8:21And like I said, it's fun, It's joyful.
- 8:25My mom also loved it. So I just like was predisposed
- 8:27to adore this movie. And I'm such a musical.
- 8:30Like I'm a I'm a musical theatre kid.
- 8:33Yeah, you love musicals. I love musicals.
- 8:35This isn't a musical, but it has the same vibe as musical.
- 8:38Yeah. So it like immediately drew me
- 8:40in. Yeah, I know you love this
- 8:43movie. You talk about it like at least
- 8:468 * a year. Well, the weird thing about
- 8:48this, too, is this movie has had a little resurgence in pop
- 8:53culture as of the past couple weeks because, yeah, because
- 8:56Sabrina Carpenter performed at Coachella and she did an homage
- 9:01to Dirty Dancing where there's a guy on the floor when he backs
- 9:04away and she crawls to him just like Baby does with Johnny.
- 9:08And then on top of that, some very popular, like Tik Tokers
- 9:11and Youtubers have been posting at Coachella, and they're doing
- 9:15the beginning narration that babies says and posing at
- 9:20Coachella. I don't know why.
- 9:21Maybe because of the spring Carpenter thing?
- 9:23Maybe. I mean Sabrina Carpenter, she
- 9:25does. I wouldn't call it Dirty
- 9:27Dancing. I would just call it like
- 9:29completely sexualized dancing. No, but it's a specific homage.
- 9:33To the movie that she does. If anybody was gonna do it, it
- 9:35would be her, which she does all kinds of crazy shit, but OK.
- 9:40So you kind of said that you like it, but do you love it?
- 9:45So I don't hate it, OK, and no matter.
- 9:47What you better? Not I don't I don't hate this
- 9:49movie. I don't love it I'm not like
- 9:52obsessed with it like you, I'll mind you, I don't have that
- 9:55connection to it, but I do like it.
- 9:59I find it enjoyable. This movie is a time capsule of
- 10:02the late 80s, early 90s, but it takes place in the 60s and it
- 10:07shows a time of a lot less. You know, I think people, their
- 10:12brains were more innocent. Like things weren't definitely
- 10:16tainted as much because of the news and information.
- 10:19Everybody was kind of like in a box and very sheltered so.
- 10:23It's specifically baby and her sister because they grew up
- 10:26rich. Yeah, this movie, it has that in
- 10:29its favor, but also it's a detriment as well as time has
- 10:33passed, and I'll talk about that shortly.
- 10:35But I find that like that, that whole mindset that this movie is
- 10:40made under is like, oh, it's a it's a simpler time, it's an
- 10:43innocent time, yadda, yadda, yadda.
- 10:45People were just like realizing that this provocative way of
- 10:49dancing is popularized now in the 60s.
- 10:52Yeah, but by the end of the movie, Max Kellerman, the guy
- 10:56who owns the resort, he literally has a monologue where
- 10:58he's like, kids don't want to come here and learn the foxtrot
- 11:00with their parents. They want to go to Europe and
- 11:03backpack through Europe, 23 countries in three days.
- 11:05Like they talk about it coming to an end in the movie because
- 11:09it it was a time that had to come to an end.
- 11:12The innocence had to end, unfortunately.
- 11:14It's funny because the movie came out in the late 80s, but
- 11:17this movie, if it were to make a huge impact on society, I think
- 11:21it should have come out in the 60s where it was set in.
- 11:25They never would have been able to show that type of dancing on
- 11:27screen though. Yeah, you weren't even allowed
- 11:30to show a husband and wife in bed together.
- 11:32Until like the 60s popular, that's for sure.
- 11:36Yeah, it would have been. It would have been rated not
- 11:39even rated R like rated NC 17 so.
- 11:42You have you watched this movie with like rose coloured glasses
- 11:45because of like your memories and stuff growing up watching
- 11:47it. But if you watch it just more
- 11:50objectively from my point of view, there are really nice
- 11:53things about it, like similar to the movie The Breakfast Club,
- 11:57you know, it's got a similar vibe.
- 11:58There's a lot of coming of age situations happening, but this
- 12:02one's a little. Bit it does address some social
- 12:04issues though. Yeah, I'm going to talk about
- 12:06those shortly, but I'll tell you why I'm saying what I'm saying.
- 12:09But anyway, uh, what's your cringiest moment, Mom?
- 12:12OK so as much as I do love this movie, like I said there is some
- 12:18fucking cringe in this movie. There's a lot of cringy moments
- 12:21and yeah, some of it's intentional, some of it's
- 12:24unintentional. Some of it's unintentional and
- 12:26unintentional cringey moment is the scene where Johnny first
- 12:29dances with Baby at the staff party.
- 12:33She's very awkward and he's like, trying to teach her how to
- 12:36move and he's just like, grinding his crotch into her so
- 12:41aggressively. And it's like this young girl
- 12:43came into the staff party and you like, snuck over to her and
- 12:47started just like, dry humping her.
- 12:50That's the dance move, I mean. I don't like it.
- 12:52Listen, the funny part is I was watching this movie and all the
- 12:56dance moves, I was like, yo, you could just dub this movie with
- 12:58different music and it would still work like music from
- 13:01today. Oh yeah, all kinds of songs.
- 13:03Would like you could put some nice dancehall reggae jams on
- 13:07there to the dance to that the staff party scene and it would
- 13:11still work. Put some Sean Paul in there.
- 13:13You know, you could put all kinds of get busy.
- 13:17The beginning credits. It get was it?
- 13:19The beginning credits are all the staff people dancing, and
- 13:22it's a different song in the opening credits than it is that
- 13:25they're actually. Dancing to I know, I know, but
- 13:26that that whole staff scene, you could have put any, any song
- 13:30like you could put Shaggy in there and it would still work.
- 13:32Yeah, so I don't like the crotch dancing.
- 13:35And then there's also a scene where Johnny goes to find baby
- 13:40and she's like sleeping in like 1 of the staff rooms and he
- 13:44wakes her up and he's like, thank you so much for standing
- 13:46up for me. Like you tried to save me but
- 13:48they fired me anyway. Yeah.
- 13:50And then she she goes, you were right, Johnny.
- 13:53You can't win no matter what you do.
- 13:55And it's. Just some of the acting is very
- 13:58question. It comes off as overly dramatic
- 14:00and it feels like she was unsure of how to deliver that line.
- 14:03So it almost feels like a soap opera and it feels out of place.
- 14:06It doesn't match the. Rest of some cringey acting in
- 14:08this. I'm like that, you know, I'm
- 14:10watching and I'm like, OK, it's bit of its charm, but it's also
- 14:13like, was that the best take that you guys could come up
- 14:15with? What?
- 14:16What was your cringiest moment? So my cringiest moment was right
- 14:19off the bat. It's the opening group dance
- 14:22scene where they get to the resort stop 1234 Let's after the
- 14:30meal. This is sorry for Dry Your
- 14:33Purpose and Shake it loose 123. It is really difficult to watch.
- 14:39You've got all these people that just got to resort the resort.
- 14:43That sets the. Nobody's listen, nobody's
- 14:45drinking. You got one guy with those long
- 14:48ass blue tube socks. It's just so uncomfortable.
- 14:51You have the parents there and nobody looks like they're having
- 14:54a good time. It just really, it looks like
- 14:57summer camp. It's just really.
- 14:58It is. It's like family camp.
- 15:00I'm sorry, it's super cringy and it's, I don't think it was, it
- 15:03was supposed to be funny, but it's just for me, I'm just like,
- 15:05oh, it's hard to watch. And then a close second is the
- 15:09long extended gaze that baby gives Johnny when she first
- 15:14arrives at the staff party. She is just staring at him like
- 15:19way too much. Yeah, she's banging them,
- 15:21basically. Undressing him with her eyes.
- 15:23And it's funny because it's rare in movies for the woman to
- 15:26undress a man. Usually the girl is the one
- 15:28being objectified. Yeah, she's the creep towards
- 15:31him at the beginning. Yeah, she's creeping hard and
- 15:34like she's got like she's not unattractive girl, but she's got
- 15:39smaller eyes, so it looks kind of creepy.
- 15:42She doesn't have baby doll eyes, even though her name baby like
- 15:45her eyes are a little bit you know, she doesn't have.
- 15:49I don't her eyes aren't that pretty.
- 15:50I just got to say that. Well, she was known actually for
- 15:54having like too big of a nose. Like a lot of people criticized
- 15:58her and she actually got a nose job not too long after this
- 16:01movie. And then her acting career dried
- 16:04up. Really.
- 16:05It ruined her career. See, I didn't have a problem
- 16:07with the nose, I just thought her eyes were a little bit
- 16:10beady. Yeah, I didn't think her nose
- 16:12was that big either. I think she was very, very, very
- 16:15cute and could be pretty. Yeah, I mean, she was pretty
- 16:18later on when she stopped, you know, dressing so like, uptight.
- 16:23You know, the movie, she loosens up, starts wearing a little bit
- 16:26of makeup. Yeah, yeah, she's definitely
- 16:28prettier than later. Seeing that opening dance scene
- 16:30with the group dance, Oh my God, I wanted to throw myself.
- 16:33I wasn't even in that room. I wasn't in the gazebo.
- 16:35I just wanted to jump off the gazebo.
- 16:37And she dances with the old lady.
- 16:38Yeah, I. Know it was this is.
- 16:42I love it. OK, most iconic scene.
- 16:45Yeah, I'll do a couple of scenes first so that that staff party
- 16:50dancing scene, OK, It's very iconic.
- 16:53Baby walks in, her eyes are wide, she's carrying the
- 16:57watermelon, she's looking around and you keep a secret.
- 17:02Your parents would kill you. Max had killed me.
- 17:06Everybody's just grinding on each other, everybody's half
- 17:09dressed, everybody's a little drunk.
- 17:11Sweaty. Everybody's sweaty.
- 17:13The the the the lights are a little bit red.
- 17:15Yeah, it's a very sexual. Scene, it's pretty racy actually
- 17:18for the movie that how it starts and it goes immediately to like.
- 17:23Well, that's the thing we're seeing.
- 17:24Like dirty. Part we're seeing young babies.
- 17:26She's she's 17 years old. She's becoming into her
- 17:30sexuality. And this summer kind of is a
- 17:32sexual awakening for her because she sees this dancing.
- 17:35Yeah. And it awakens something and you
- 17:37see it happening. And I don't know if that song
- 17:39was out when this movie came out or it was set in the 60s, so
- 17:41they wouldn't have used that song.
- 17:43But when she walks in there with the watermelon and should have
- 17:45been like when I get that feeling, I need sexual healing
- 17:50sexual. Healing so that that's a great.
- 17:56Scene My most iconic moment and scene is the staff party.
- 18:02I picked the same way. It's very memorable.
- 18:04When Baby helps with the watermelons and goes to the
- 18:06secret dance club and she sees the hot sweaty dancing, I find
- 18:11the whole sequence great. She's creeping on Patrick
- 18:14Swayze. I mean, the guy.
- 18:15He's killing it on the dance floor.
- 18:18Oh my God, when him and Penny danced together, that's another
- 18:20iconic. Scene, He's just cooking up the
- 18:22dance floor and it's the peak of the movie for me because it's
- 18:25the yeah, honestly, it's the only scene that I found that
- 18:28everybody seemed comfortable in their own skin.
- 18:32Like they're scenes where Patrick Swayze's talking and
- 18:34he's, he's delivering lines and you're like, he's like, I, I
- 18:37wish I'd rather be dancing. Like yeah, it feels.
- 18:40Real, it feels. More realistic.
- 18:42It just feels. Shocking that he's actually like
- 18:44a well known actor and he's such an incredible dancer.
- 18:47Well. Because the actors are have a
- 18:50history in dance and theatre, right?
- 18:51Well, the woman who played Penny, though, was a dance
- 18:54instructor. Like, they had to find somebody
- 18:55who was highly skilled dancer. Yeah.
- 18:58Because the scene where they dance for the staff, they're
- 19:00doing a classic like mamba or tango or something, and then
- 19:04they go to the staff meeting, the staff party dance, and
- 19:09they're doing like a much more sexual ballroom dance version.
- 19:12So she had to know how to do all that.
- 19:14And he did, too. But I mean, she's the one who
- 19:17shines in those. Scenes.
- 19:18But it's it's a great scene. It's just it makes the movie for
- 19:22me and it's the peak of the movie.
- 19:24I feel like it's the best part. Well, my other iconic scene is
- 19:28Yeah, both dance montages of baby learning how to dance.
- 19:33Yeah, with Johnny, amazing, particularly when Pennies
- 19:37involved and they do that three-way dance where he's
- 19:40dancing with baby and she's behind baby and they're dancing.
- 19:42Together was a little weird for me.
- 19:44I loved that. It was banging on the door of.
- 19:47And then that one scene where she's dancing with baby panties.
- 19:51Dancing with baby. Yeah, she's showing her.
- 19:52Patrick Swayze's just sitting, watching.
- 19:54I'm like this looks like the beginning of a porno.
- 19:57Job. She did.
- 19:58She's showing her how to be like sexy in front of the.
- 20:00Crowd. I know it just gave like a
- 20:04mattress actress vibes. I'm sorry it did.
- 20:07It she was she was preparing to do.
- 20:08A dance with everybody else thinking I'm just saying that
- 20:11everybody else. No, you're ruining the movie.
- 20:13I'm not. Ruining it, I'm telling you.
- 20:14Like some some scenes were hell asexual.
- 20:17It's called Dirty Dancing. Yeah, it was sexual, but they
- 20:20were gonna bang. I know the three of them in
- 20:232026, if this movie came out, they were banging.
- 20:26They were going to have a three-way.
- 20:27That's a quote. OK, so quotes.
- 20:33I got Johnny. Look, Spaghetti arms.
- 20:36This is my dance space. This is your dance space.
- 20:39I don't go into yours. You don't go into mine.
- 20:41You got to hold the frame and he's telling baby to get her
- 20:45shit. Together.
- 20:45Yeah, she did it. And then later he had spaghetti
- 20:47arms. And this, this quote is just
- 20:50like How to ruin the fucking Mood. 101 Baby asked them right
- 20:56after they did it. Have you had many women?
- 20:59Johnny says. What?
- 21:01Have you had many women? Baby?
- 21:03Come on, tell me. I wanna know.
- 21:06Like why would you like this is the problem with some women.
- 21:10Like why are you asking that? Even you were like wow, what a
- 21:13stupid thing to ask. What a terrible mood killer.
- 21:16Yeah, but you have. To start a fight?
- 21:18No. How to start a fight one-on-one.
- 21:20You sure? Remember babies, a virgin and
- 21:22she's in love for the first time.
- 21:24So she's exploring what is appropriate in those, like
- 21:27what's appropriate to ask, what's appropriate to talk
- 21:29about. She's exploring that everybody's
- 21:32had blunders in relationships, said.
- 21:34Or ask something. We're like, oh, I shouldn't have
- 21:36said. My problem with that is the
- 21:37director is like, OK, you're gonna say this line after you
- 21:40guys do it. And now young girls who watch
- 21:43this movie or girls who are like finding themselves in their late
- 21:47teens, early 20s, they're going to watch this.
- 21:49And they're like, oh, that's a question to ask.
- 21:52And just, like, kill everybody's.
- 21:53They're going to know it's not OK because he gets very
- 21:55uncomfortable, gets out of bed and immediately gets dressed.
- 21:58Yeah, yeah. And then I have Johnny saying,
- 22:02yeah, it takes a real St. To ask Daddy when she went and
- 22:06asked for the money for the abortion.
- 22:07No, which is a Dick thing to say because she's helping your
- 22:09friend, dude. Yeah.
- 22:11I'm being a Dick. He's been screwed over quite a
- 22:13bit. And then I've got, I gotta say
- 22:17my my favorite at the end. But why don't you?
- 22:20Why don't you do your quotes though, OK?
- 22:22So I have a few. One of them is just that opening
- 22:26monologue. That was the summer of 1963 when
- 22:29everybody called me baby. And it didn't occur to me to
- 22:32mind. Yeah.
- 22:33So she know, she's letting us know the year.
- 22:35She's letting us know that she goes by baby kind of
- 22:37inexplicably, and she doesn't mind.
- 22:40She doesn't mind being called baby, but she is like a baby
- 22:43when she arrives there and leaves a woman.
- 22:45So I like, I like that. Introduction Madonna.
- 22:49I like, I know you hate the gazebo scene, but Penny is
- 22:52leading all the people to dance and she goes come on lady, God
- 22:55wouldn't have given you maracas if he didn't want you to shake
- 22:58up. My God.
- 23:00And. Shakes her titties.
- 23:02Oh my God. And then when Kellerman is
- 23:08talking to the waiters, he says listen, keep your fingers out of
- 23:11the water, your hair out of the soup and show the God damn
- 23:13daughter is a good time. All the daughters, even the
- 23:16dogs. Yeah, that guy's a Dick.
- 23:20Well, he's encouraging the waiters to hit on and date the
- 23:23daughters, but he's discouraging the entertainment staff from
- 23:26doing. It I know he's a Dick.
- 23:28Fuck you, dude. He's like, I went to Yale and
- 23:30Harvard is because you guys are the best servers.
- 23:32No, it's because I want you to like Thrill.
- 23:35Well, the daughters. Make them fall in love with you
- 23:38and then they go home for the when summer's over.
- 23:40Yeah. And then at the end of that
- 23:42scene, Johnny goes up to Robbie and he says you just put your
- 23:45pickle on everybody's plate, college boy, and leave the hard
- 23:48stuff to me. That is really just cringey
- 23:52lines, but they're good. No, that's a really good line.
- 23:55And then there's a the comedian, he's doing a comedy show, and he
- 24:02goes, you know, I finally met a girl exactly like my mother's,
- 24:06dresses like her, acts like her. So I brought her home.
- 24:08My father doesn't like her. Yeah, it's Newman.
- 24:11It's Newman. Newmans in some iconic movies in
- 24:14this isn't drastic park. Is just Newman.
- 24:17He's basically Newman. No, he was a prequel to Seinfeld
- 24:20before he comes to. Mel, he wasn't new media at.
- 24:22All No, he was very new Mini. And then, of course, my last
- 24:26one, we started the show with it.
- 24:28Nobody puts baby in the corner. Nobody puts baby in the corner.
- 24:37I got a call so I have my favorite all time 1 and I say it
- 24:40at home and it's because it's become a meme now and you're
- 24:46wild. You're wild.
- 24:49Maybe he's yelling at Johnny because he fucking breaks his
- 24:53own window to get into the car and drives.
- 24:55Off, which is absurd. It's bad shit.
- 24:58I know he's really trying to impress her.
- 25:04What? You're what?
- 25:08Also he must give no fucks. But yeah, the reason it's so
- 25:11popular now is because there's like literal memes where you're
- 25:16both parents and you have to work tomorrow and your husband
- 25:19starts another episode on Netflix at like 9:30 at night
- 25:23and she's like, you're. Wild.
- 25:25You're wild. No, the real 1 is when when your
- 25:28husband starts a movie at 8:15. Yeah, it's so funny.
- 25:33Listen, this movie, it has some iconic quotes, but not as many
- 25:38as some of the movies we've done, which is what I noticed.
- 25:41So I took it upon myself to do something kind of a tribute to
- 25:45Dirty Dancing, but with some of the best movies ever.
- 25:48So what I did was I took quotes from other movies and I Dirty
- 25:53Dance defied them just for tonight's episode.
- 25:56So yeah. So.
- 25:57So this is from Taken. I have a very particular set of
- 26:01skills. Skills I've acquired over a long
- 26:04career in the Catskills. Skills that make me a nightmare
- 26:07for people who can't hold their frame.
- 26:10I've got God, I've got the Matrix.
- 26:13You take the blue pill, the story ends.
- 26:15You wake up in your bunk and believe whatever you wanna
- 26:17believe. You take the red pill.
- 26:19You stay in the staff quarters and I show you how deep the
- 26:23mamba goes. I think these are fucking
- 26:28hilarious but I guess tough crowd.
- 26:30The movie has enough iconic quotes that you don't need to do
- 26:33this. So I I do, I must The Dark
- 26:36Knight. You either die a guest, or you
- 26:38live long enough to see yourself become the dance instructor.
- 26:43Alright, hang on, I got a couple more Planet of the Apes.
- 26:48Get your stinking paws off me you and maintain your damn dirty
- 26:52frame. Oh my God.
- 26:55Silence of the Lambs. A census taker once tried to
- 26:58test my rhythm. I danced my ass off all night
- 27:01until his liver gave out after a sip of resort lemonade.
- 27:04And my last one, Fight Club. The first rule of Dirty Dancing
- 27:08is you don't talk about the staff quarters.
- 27:11The second rule is you definitely don't mention the
- 27:13watermelon because she tells him I brought the watermelon.
- 27:16No, she goes. I carried a watermelon.
- 27:18Yeah, I. Carried a watermelon.
- 27:21Anyway, I just wanted to remix it up a little bit.
- 27:24I thought that. Was funny.
- 27:25Those were some dad jokes bro. That was dad coded.
- 27:29Well, I'm the father of two. What do you want?
- 27:31OK, you. I got you to laugh at the The
- 27:34Dark Knight one. Yeah, The Dark Knight one was
- 27:36good. Good.
- 27:38Alright, Is this movie? This is going to be the funniest
- 27:40thing segment, I gotta tell you. Is this movie a classic or
- 27:43cancelled? So there are some issues with
- 27:48this movie, namely, OK baby is 17 years old.
- 27:54Yeah, I did not know this until this viewing.
- 27:57I thought she was 18. Yeah, we looked it up.
- 28:01She was 17. She's a miner and Johnny Castle
- 28:04is playing a 24 to 25 year. Old.
- 28:06I got 25 here. Don't try to show your.
- 28:09Code. Why does this keep happening?
- 28:11Why can't people writing these scripts make everybody involved
- 28:15fucking age appropriate? Why does Hollywood romanticize
- 28:20like straight up being a predator?
- 28:22So the part that's aged really badly about this 25 versus 18,
- 28:27the age thing is she's a minor, right?
- 28:30And then he gets all up in that and then her name is baby, which
- 28:35is really age poorly because of the age.
- 28:38Yeah, the baby part is really in like, it's in really bad taste
- 28:43now when you think about it, but keep going.
- 28:46So yeah, that's disturbing. And then on top of that, the
- 28:50class divide between the entertainment staff and guests
- 28:53is staggering. Same with the entertainment
- 28:56staff and waiters. Like like I said earlier, the
- 28:58waiters are encouraged to date guests while Johnny and the
- 29:01other dancers are told it's against the rules.
- 29:04It's unfair and it just feels like a way for this rich asshole
- 29:08that owns this resort to beat down people with less money.
- 29:14Like he just treats the impoverished like shit.
- 29:17That's why I don't like him, he's a piece of shit.
- 29:19He is, yeah. And just the classified in
- 29:22general, like everybody. It just feels like they the
- 29:25guests feel like they're better than the entertainment staff.
- 29:29It just doesn't sit well. Like baby's dad is angry, like
- 29:32upset when she sees it. She's interested in Johnny not
- 29:36just because of because he thinks that she is pregnant, he
- 29:39impregnated Penny, but also it's like.
- 29:41He's lesser than. Her like he's like oh this guy's
- 29:43a piece of shit why are you interested in him and doesn't
- 29:46like care to get to know him at all?
- 29:48Yeah, I have something similar to that.
- 29:50I said, like this movie, basically it shows a huge
- 29:53disconnect between privileged and sheltered group of people
- 29:56versus the average Joe there. Their issues are all first world
- 30:00issues and I'm all for being successful and elevating
- 30:03yourself and elevating your company, but it makes the
- 30:06characters like all the guests, unrelatable.
- 30:09Like you have nothing in common with these fucking people,
- 30:12Johnny. They all stink of money.
- 30:14Yeah, they just, they just uppity assholes.
- 30:17And then Johnny and his friends are relatable, you know, they,
- 30:20they, they sound like they have real issues, you know?
- 30:23They work hard for their. Money, work hard.
- 30:25They're blue collar people from what it sounds like.
- 30:27And the story focuses on the uptight dad and his relationship
- 30:31with this fucking sheltered kids.
- 30:33And also the resort is just like this diversity free zone
- 30:37ethnically and financially. It's just a bunch of people that
- 30:41are rich and you know, like if you go to Disney World and
- 30:45sorry, there'll be people with boatloads of money and there'll
- 30:47be people with, I can only afford a 2 day pass.
- 30:50I'm taking my kids on like the slow lanes and we don't have
- 30:54speed pass and stuff like that. But it's accessible, you know
- 30:58what I mean? Like this resort is just very
- 31:00douchey. I find so are also Patrick
- 31:03Swayze can bust a move, he can dance, but if there was a few
- 31:07other guys that could, you know, give him a run for his money,
- 31:10they would be cooking it up on the dance floor.
- 31:11That's the thing that bugs. Me, but it's it's ballroom
- 31:14dance. No, I know, but he doesn't like
- 31:16every movie like this has a moment where the best dancer, in
- 31:19this case Patrick Swayze, would have a showdown like a dance off
- 31:23with someone. And he doesn't really have a
- 31:25dance off. It would be really cool to see
- 31:27someone else like, you know, like try to show them up and
- 31:31then he's like, oh, I got this and he does some crazy shit and
- 31:35then baby just swoons for him. You.
- 31:36Know yeah, but it's not about that.
- 31:37We see baby like very nervously doing her performance at the
- 31:41other hotel and then she's very and like she's still nervous and
- 31:44then she's very confident at the end dance scene.
- 31:46The modern day version. Of her coming.
- 31:48Into being a modern day version of this movie is step up.
- 31:51Oh yeah, yeah, very much so. Yeah, it's like basically
- 31:54remixed. Well, similar.
- 31:56She's rich, she's poor. Exactly.
- 31:57So on and so forth. Yeah.
- 31:58Special school in this case, I agree.
- 32:01OK, party like it's 2026. So if this movie was made today,
- 32:07if we do the same kind of timeline, it would be set in
- 32:1120/20/2002. Sorry.
- 32:13OK, so that was Johnny 1987. It was set in the 60s for us,
- 32:19would be set in 2002, which is crazy to think about because it
- 32:21doesn't feel like it was that long ago.
- 32:23Yeah, it was. CD's and MP3 players were just
- 32:27coming out. Yeah, but it still doesn't feel
- 32:30like it was that far in the past.
- 32:31So I'm sure people in the 80s didn't feel like the 60s was
- 32:34that long ago. That's true, I don't think they
- 32:37would have had Johnny and baby have such an aggressive age gap
- 32:41and she definitely wouldn't be a minor.
- 32:42Like they would very clearly state that she was 18 because.
- 32:46Or he or he would be like 18. She was 17.
- 32:49Like they're both kids. Yeah, because they say, like
- 32:52babies going to Mount Holyoke in the fall, like she's going to
- 32:55college. Yeah.
- 32:55So they specifically made her a character that has a birthday in
- 32:58like September, October or November.
- 33:00December. Yeah, instead of.
- 33:02They could have had her have a birthday in June and then
- 33:06they're at Kellerman's in July. Like it's whoever wrote the
- 33:08script is a fucking creep. I don't think there was any
- 33:11malice behind it. I think they were just writing a
- 33:14script and the dates and the birthdays and just kind of fell
- 33:17into. Place so she doesn't have to be
- 33:18a minor. It's so creepy.
- 33:20And then for me, I said the location would be different
- 33:23because the nostalgia of these, like family summer camp hotels
- 33:27no longer exists. Nobody's been to those.
- 33:29It would have to be something that's more relatable to the
- 33:32public now. Yeah, yeah, I agree.
- 33:34That's why I'm like, I'm saying these characters not really
- 33:37relatable aside from them being human and they eat and like
- 33:41drink water. They're not really relatable
- 33:43people unless your dad is a doctor and you're going to the
- 33:47Peace Corps and your sister just does fuck all.
- 33:50You know, and just that that type of vacation, like it would
- 33:53make more sense if they were at like an all inclusive resort or
- 33:55something. Yeah, because these family
- 33:57resorts, they don't exist anymore.
- 33:59All inclusives are accessible to a lot of people.
- 34:02Yeah. But like, at that time, I think
- 34:04a lot of people did go to these resorts.
- 34:06And it does kind of feel near and dear to me because it's in
- 34:09upstate New York. Yeah.
- 34:10And that's where we used to go on our annual camping trip.
- 34:12Every year that was just camping, right?
- 34:14And you had all kinds of people showing.
- 34:15Scenery is similar when they're in the lake.
- 34:17It looks very much like the lake we used to swim in.
- 34:20Like it. It looks very familiar.
- 34:22Yeah, that's true. I I thought it was like very
- 34:24familiar as well, but. Yeah, it may have been shot.
- 34:27Yeah, it's just. Near where we went, because that
- 34:29was in upstate New York as well. So for me party like 2026 I I
- 34:34honestly for one thing here I said if it was made in 2026
- 34:38there would be some same sex dancers.
- 34:40Oha 100%. There's none of them though so.
- 34:44Yeah, I think there probably would be.
- 34:45But yeah, I mean, it was the 80s.
- 34:47There was no way they were gonna do that.
- 34:48No, I know. It was still.
- 34:50Very 80s portraying the 60s so. Yeah, both of those times gay
- 34:54was very tight. Yeah, exactly what are you doing
- 34:56for recasting? So I just picked a few
- 34:59characters. Um, I specifically didn't choose
- 35:02Penny because nobody has the dancing chops sure to be here.
- 35:06But for Johnny, I said that I would like Jeremy Allen White.
- 35:12Do you know who that is? The Bear.
- 35:15Oh, that. Could be.
- 35:16Yeah. OK.
- 35:16He has the perfect vibe to be like a dancer from the wrong
- 35:21side of the tracks. But he's also very sexy and he's
- 35:24a great body. So he could definitely be
- 35:26Johnny. I don't know if he can actually
- 35:27dance. Yeah.
- 35:28Yeah. But you can train anyone.
- 35:30Yeah. I mean, Patrick Swayze was very.
- 35:32Gifted a lot of movies where the actors trained for like months.
- 35:35Yeah, so I'm sure you could train him for baby.
- 35:40So they're both fucking radicals.
- 35:41Fucking. OK, so option A is Sabrina
- 35:45Carpenter. OK, why is that radical?
- 35:48Just because the other person I have, OK, so Sabrina Carpenter,
- 35:52cause like she's small, she's a good dancer and she could
- 35:55portray like a very innocent girl, but then also have that
- 35:58like very intense sex appeal or Zendaya.
- 36:03OHS the day is not radical. Zendaya wasn't Shake It Up.
- 36:06She's a phenomenal dancer. Why is she radical?
- 36:09Just because I picked such different people, like very
- 36:12different personalities, different body types, different
- 36:14races, so. I'm being I'm going to be very
- 36:17like cookie cutter because of good.
- 36:20Like I have my reasons, but my recasting would be because
- 36:24they've already done it. They've been in two movies
- 36:26together and they were phenomenal.
- 36:28The chemistry was great. It's believable.
- 36:30I put for Johnny, I put Ryan Gosling and for Baby I put Emma
- 36:36Stone because they did La La Land together.
- 36:39Yeah, but they're way too. Old doesn't matter.
- 36:42He can look 25 and she can look 17 if you add enough makeup.
- 36:47And then if you don't want to put stone, you wanna put
- 36:49somebody younger just to have that age gap, I would put
- 36:53Zendaya. You picked Sundays, Yeah.
- 36:55Yeah, I would put Zendaya because she she can dance and
- 36:59Ryan Gosling has the moves. It's funny you mentioned Ryan
- 37:02Gosling like 2-3 movies ago and I'm like, why would you pick
- 37:05him? He's.
- 37:05Like I've mentioned him in a. Couple mentioned him a couple
- 37:07times but this one I think would fit perfectly.
- 37:09The guy has the moves, he can dance, he's super charming,
- 37:13like. He could, but it would have to
- 37:15be like notebook age Ryan Gosling.
- 37:16You'd have to be a younger Ryan Gosling to carry.
- 37:19It I do Rachel Rachel McAdams cause she doesn't like she
- 37:22looked older than him in that movie too.
- 37:25And I don't think she can dance. She's never danced.
- 37:28Yeah, probably. Not.
- 37:30For Lisa, the sister, I picked Margaret Qualley.
- 37:34Oht that is no. So, you know, Once Upon a time
- 37:37in Hollywood, the girl that Brad Pitt keeps seeing.
- 37:40The dark haired girl defeat. Yeah, her, her.
- 37:44She was just in a music video with Sabrina Carpenter.
- 37:47Yeah, and she was serving sex. But also, she looks just like
- 37:52Lisa. Like her.
- 37:54But she has. Like similar.
- 37:55Colouring she. Doesn't just, she does.
- 37:59I don't know. Yeah, she does.
- 38:00She she could be sexy. She could be in the little hula
- 38:02costume. Should throw Sydney Sweeney in
- 38:04there because she needs to be in A, She needs to be in a B roll.
- 38:07She has the maracas. I OK, I'm just gonna say it
- 38:10right here. I would never cast Sydney
- 38:11Sweeney in any role because she can't fucking act.
- 38:13Yeah, she can play 1 character, she can play her.
- 38:16She can play her character in Euphoria and she was good in
- 38:19White Lotus, but that's it. Everything else I've seen her in
- 38:21has been hot garbage. Yeah.
- 38:23I would never cast her. She has no time.
- 38:25She has fake boobs. She has fake boobs and no
- 38:27talent. Cause I've seen pictures of her
- 38:29like in like 20-17 and. Yeah, I don't like her.
- 38:31She's not a girls girl. I don't like her anyway.
- 38:33And then the last person I have is as Baby's dad.
- 38:36I would put Dennis Quaid just because I have such a deep love
- 38:38for him. Dennis Quaid.
- 38:40I fucking love Dennis Quaid because of the parent trap you
- 38:43got. I would.
- 38:44Love the intimidating. To the dead.
- 38:45I gotta pick somebody. Dennis Quaid could be
- 38:47intimidating. No, you need.
- 38:48Like, yes he could. I don't know, Like I obviously
- 38:51he's not, he's unwell now, but I would pick like Bruce Willis.
- 38:55Poor guys like unwell though. Yeah, but Bruce Willis doesn't
- 38:58give Doctor Dennis Quaid could be a doctor.
- 39:00Bruce Willis gives I'll fuck you up if you yeah, but.
- 39:03Thought the doctor in this movie doesn't give those vibes.
- 39:06He's more of a Dennis Queen type.
- 39:08He's like this, her dad babies, dad gives, I'm gonna drug you
- 39:12and you sleep well. He's just a loving dad and a
- 39:16doctor like Dennis Quaid can easily play that character.
- 39:18Fair enough. Alright, can you watch this with
- 39:20your parents? You go ahead.
- 39:23I just heard know the dancing is hella too sexual.
- 39:27It's really not like I'm shocked that your mom showed you this
- 39:31movie. It's it's it's listening.
- 39:34It's graphic. There's hot, sweaty sexual
- 39:38dancing that can be found at any nightclub.
- 39:41OK, How old were you when she showed you this?
- 39:43I was like 15. Probably 14 or 15.
- 39:46OK, Hot, sweaty, dancing, sexualized dancing.
- 39:50There's a scene about an abortion.
- 39:51There's a whole thing about an abortion in this movie.
- 39:54There's a whole thing about her being like losing her V card to
- 39:58this guy and she's a miner, OK. Yeah, well, we didn't.
- 40:02I didn't know she was a minor the first time I.
- 40:03Watched I know, but I'm just saying like.
- 40:06She's 26 in this movie playing. 17 it's just and it's about
- 40:09rebelling against your parents as well, which is something I'd
- 40:13be shocked that your parents would be like yeah, let's watch
- 40:15this you know what I. Mean no you don't understand the
- 40:18relationship between a mom and daughter that are really close
- 40:21like I am with my mom. OK, you can watch stuff like
- 40:23this and it's not weird. It gets weird when my dad enters
- 40:27the room. OK, then that's what I'm like.
- 40:29So. So I said you can, but baby and
- 40:32Johnny. 'S make sure your dad's the door
- 40:33is locked. Baby and Johnny's dance scene
- 40:36that turns into a sex scene is very sexual.
- 40:40Yes, it is. And if you were watching this
- 40:43with our daughter and I walked in, I'd be like, what the fuck
- 40:46are you watching, dude? That's what I would say.
- 40:49Yeah, but I'm gonna watch it with our daughter when you're
- 40:52not home. No, you're not.
- 40:53We're going to bond over how amazing it.
- 40:55Is I'm gonna put something called Less Dirty Dancing on the
- 40:58TV? No, you're gonna put clean
- 41:00dancing. It's gonna be Haram dancing,
- 41:03that's what it's called. It's just gonna be people like
- 41:05leaving room for Jesus 6 feet apart.
- 41:07Yeah, alright, Favorite and least favorite supporting
- 41:11character? Can I go first?
- 41:13Yeah, go ahead. OK, I like Billy Kostecki.
- 41:17He's a Johnny's cousin. He's like a He helped me get
- 41:20the. Job resort, he's great.
- 41:22He's a nice guy. He usually sees the good people.
- 41:24He tries to help other people. He doesn't judge books by their
- 41:28cover. Yeah, he lets baby come to the
- 41:31party. She never would have.
- 41:32The movie would never would happen without him.
- 41:35So I, I really like him. I think he's like, he's not in
- 41:39it enough. And when he is, he's awesome.
- 41:41He's like. He has a presence for sure.
- 41:44He's definitely the audience being like, come on, come on.
- 41:46Like, you know, like, let him let her hang out.
- 41:48Let her hang. She's knocked out, baby.
- 41:52Yeah, my favorite character is Lisa, the sister.
- 41:58She's like kind of ditzy, but she also has a lot of really
- 42:01funny moments, like when she sings the hula song.
- 42:03Like both times I die laughing. I love that and I also think
- 42:19it's. That scene needed more crowd
- 42:21reactions being disgusted to make it even funnier, but they
- 42:24didn't. Have it.
- 42:24Everyone's just ignoring her and just like, wanna hula, wanna
- 42:29hula. And her voice is really
- 42:32beautiful. Yeah.
- 42:34I also think it's hilarious that she doesn't know what a towel on
- 42:37the door knob means. Ohe yeah.
- 42:39I was like, Oh no. Yeah, like there's clearly a
- 42:42towel on the doorknob. Don't go in there.
- 42:43And she's so that rich guy's wife is just getting it in with
- 42:45all these young guys like yo, calm down.
- 42:48You're. Gonna catch syphilis bro.
- 42:49She's Vivian is horny. Yeah.
- 42:52She's she's looking for it, but yeah, Lisa, it's just like
- 42:55Robbie, I'm here, it's time. And like pushes the door open
- 42:57and nailing somebody else. So she may not be the most
- 43:01likable character and she's very sheltered, but she ends up being
- 43:04a good sister to baby. And the hula song is what makes
- 43:06me love. Her.
- 43:07Fair enough. My least favorite the resort
- 43:11owner is a Dick. He hires Dicks and treats them
- 43:14like Dicks and in turn they become Dicks.
- 43:18But Robbie is the worst. Fuck that guy.
- 43:20Robbie is the absolute worst. I can't stand him.
- 43:23Yeah, he fucking sucks. He knocks somebody up and just
- 43:25left. He's the worst in the thing, but
- 43:27my least favorite is the Kellerman's Resort owner.
- 43:30Same. Yeah, he's the worst guy.
- 43:32Ever. Max Kellerman, he's so mean to
- 43:34the entertainment staff. The only reason people come to
- 43:37your dumb ass little hotel is because of the dancing.
- 43:41And he's also, like, horny to fire Johnny the whole movie.
- 43:44He wants to fire him. Yeah, he is.
- 43:48And he gets all the women because this guy has no moves.
- 43:51He's old. He's old and probably married
- 43:53year. Old people have charm, they can
- 43:56be charming, they can they can reel it in.
- 43:58Yeah, But like, what really ran me the wrong way about him is
- 44:00like, Johnny and Dan and Penny are dancing up a storm and
- 44:04making baby and all the other guests be like, oh, I want to
- 44:07learn how to dance like that. And there everybody's watching
- 44:09them. Everybody's clapping, cheering,
- 44:10enjoying. And then he just comes in the
- 44:12side of the screen and does the cut throat motion, like cut it.
- 44:15Out. Yeah, Knock it off.
- 44:16Why? Everyone's enjoying it.
- 44:19He's a killjoy. Yeah, why is it fucking worse?
- 44:22He's the. Worst stuck up little bitch
- 44:24killjoy and I hate. Him.
- 44:25I don't think I've put the word Dick in so many in such a short
- 44:28span of sentences before because of this guy, but I did.
- 44:31Yeah, he's a Dick. Yeah, he hires Dicks who become
- 44:34Dicks. It's true.
- 44:38Cultural impact. This movie is has pop culture
- 44:41immortality. Yeah, the line nobody puts baby
- 44:43in the corner has become a lasting cultural shorthand, for
- 44:47sure. But it doesn't.
- 44:50Like. It's such a weird thing to say.
- 44:52Well, did you know that Patrick Swayze actually really hated
- 44:55that line? I did not know that.
- 44:57He hated it and he felt very awkward and had to muster up his
- 45:02strength to even say it. And that's why in the scene he
- 45:05kind of says it in a throwaway way.
- 45:07He goes, nobody puts baby in the corner.
- 45:09Like he doesn't really cause you could go in there.
- 45:12You could be like nobody puts baby in the corner and grab her.
- 45:15He doesn't, he doesn't give it that gusto.
- 45:18He's embarrassed. He doesn't like that line, so
- 45:21keep going. But that line has become so
- 45:24impactful and it's kind of a shorthand for defiance and
- 45:29breaking free from limitations, which in that case are Baby's
- 45:32parents. The colouring resort.
- 45:34He's like, we're going to do our dance.
- 45:35We're going to show you people like our love, basically.
- 45:39The movie explored class barriers in the case of Johnny
- 45:42and Baby. Her dad wasn't just unhappy that
- 45:45Baby was with Johnny due to his age, but class as well.
- 45:49He imagined her ending up with a doctor, her lawyer, so he could
- 45:53simultaneously spout that his baby was going to change the
- 45:56world. And that hypocrisy was common in
- 45:58that age and still crops up today.
- 46:00Like he he's so proud of his daughter, she's going to make a
- 46:02real difference, but he wants her to make a difference by
- 46:06marrying somebody who's going to take care of her and give her
- 46:08the cushy life that she's used to.
- 46:10Yeah, it's classic, right? Yeah, I'm surprised you didn't
- 46:13use the M word for that. I actually this movie is not
- 46:17misogynistic at all. I mean, she's a strong female
- 46:19character. Who has?
- 46:21No, you got the guy who won't help her.
- 46:23He impregnated Penny and he's not helping.
- 46:27The dad is all about control and my daughter this and my daughter
- 46:30that. Yeah, that but it it honestly
- 46:32broke the molds of the female lead characters at that time
- 46:36because she's intellectual and sexual rather and and she talks
- 46:41about social issues rather than just pursuing a romantic
- 46:44partner. Like baby has a brain and we all
- 46:46know she wants to go into the peace.
- 46:47Corps. She cares about other people as.
- 46:51Yeah, but that could more just be protecting his child and not
- 46:55have to do so much with her actual gender.
- 46:58OK. I just wanted to see where you
- 47:00land on that cause you went off from your.
- 47:02Last. Podcast.
- 47:03Well, yeah, cause sometimes it is.
- 47:05Alright, so for me I the infamous lift at the end, the
- 47:09dance move is parody parodied all the time.
- 47:13It's synonymous with this movie like that.
- 47:15Sonic moment is synonymous with this.
- 47:17However, I've noticed this movie has become quite problematic as
- 47:21time has passed in certain areas.
- 47:25You can look at it. That's why I called it a time
- 47:27capsule. You have to look at it is a
- 47:30movie in a time capsule, otherwise it can seem very, very
- 47:33problematic. But you have to look at it with
- 47:36the right lens. And if you watch it with the
- 47:39correct lens, you can enjoy it still.
- 47:40Yeah, But Even so, like, it highlights social issues of the
- 47:45time. Like abortion in the 1960s in
- 47:48New York State was illegal and there was nowhere safe for women
- 47:51to go and they had to resort to dangerous back alley abortions
- 47:54which risked their lives and the issues still very prevalent
- 47:58today because Roe V Wade was overturned.
- 48:01No, I know. I'm just saying like it's
- 48:02problematic. Now, a lot of the things that
- 48:04happen in this movie, well, you got the resort, you got the
- 48:07sheltered people. I mean, we talked about all of a
- 48:09lot of it. It's just not.
- 48:10Aging. I'm just saying there were
- 48:11social issues that were touched on that are still prevalent
- 48:13today. Yeah, I agree.
- 48:15And lastly, it just it inspired movies like Save the Last Dance,
- 48:19Step Up and Take the Lead, which are all dance movies also
- 48:22include class barriers. So it has become a little bit of
- 48:26a subgenre. And honestly, all those movies
- 48:29slap. Give me a give me a dance
- 48:31montage of ballroom dancing or any kind of dancing and I'm here
- 48:34for. It save the last dance is good,
- 48:36but some of the dance moves are really cringy to watch now.
- 48:40Yeah, well, that's a similar thing.
- 48:42She's like a ballerina who needs to learn how to St.
- 48:44Yeah, but it's like all they they let that happen.
- 48:47Come on. At the time, it was cool.
- 48:49Yeah, there's there's like a montage of the cringiest moves
- 48:51on YouTube. It's really bad.
- 48:54Time. So soundtrack I I just wrote the
- 48:58soundtrack of this is fucking amazing.
- 49:00Did you know what actually went platinum?
- 49:02When I'm not surprised, I'm not surprised.
- 49:04Every song in this movie is a banger.
- 49:06It's amazing, it went, like I said, it went platinum when it
- 49:10was released because it blended nostalgic 60s oldies with
- 49:13current hits, making it unique and very memorable.
- 49:17I've had The Time of My Life, Hungry Eyes and She's Like The
- 49:20Wind are just a few of the hits that add to the films
- 49:22atmosphere. And I really do like that.
- 49:25Have the oldies like Big Girls Don't Cry is playing.
- 49:27It's setting the the mood, Yeah, but then there's also like
- 49:30montages where they brought in current songs.
- 49:33Hungry Eyes is very, very accurate because she looks like
- 49:37she's eating him with her eyes. Her little beady eyes.
- 49:41Saying should be the eyes. She does they're.
- 49:44Little. Yeah, she does.
- 49:47But it's a good soundtrack. Amazing.
- 49:48Yeah, good. Soundtrack.
- 49:49Amazing soundtrack. Location, location, location.
- 49:52So what's your favorite locations?
- 49:55The dance studio. OHS really when they're
- 49:57training. So they have to go like upstairs
- 49:59and saw little dance studio. It just, it has like a, it has a
- 50:02vibe. It's like sweaty up there cause
- 50:03it's summer. Yeah, yeah.
- 50:05Has the, the vinyl music playing.
- 50:08It has like the little area where you can change wardrobes
- 50:12and there's the iconic baby singing scene in it.
- 50:14They're practicing their dancing and they're crawling on the
- 50:17floor towards each other. And that was never intended to
- 50:20be part of the movie. Jennifer Grey and Patrick Swayze
- 50:23were just messing around and being silly, and they were
- 50:26warming up to do the real. Scene Where's my pleasing arc?
- 50:30Spaghetti arms? Could you give me some tension
- 50:33please? You're invading my dance space.
- 50:37This is my dance space. That's yours.
- 50:40Let's cha cha. The director liked it so much
- 50:42that he kept it with the film. Sometimes it real stuff, you
- 50:45can't even write it, it's just. Because they were just being
- 50:47silly and like singing to each other and being flirty and it's
- 50:51a, the chemistry was great. So it came off really well.
- 50:54So my favorite location was when Johnny teaches baby how to
- 50:58balance, he takes her to the log above the water.
- 51:01That's my favorite location in the movie because you can really
- 51:05like feel the fresh air and the sound of the water.
- 51:08It feels like they're in the great outdoors and it just, it
- 51:11kind of neutralizes both of them.
- 51:14Now most important thing to remember in lifts is balance
- 51:21well. I got it now because there's no
- 51:30music. It's you and me.
- 51:32There's nobody else around. It just seems very, very nice.
- 51:35And like we said, it's it's set in upstate New York.
- 51:38And upstate New York has some of the most beautiful, like Woods.
- 51:42But a funny thing about that scene is actually Patrick Swayze
- 51:46was very insistent on doing that stunt himself.
- 51:49And he fell several times and hit his knee so many times that
- 51:53he had to go to the hospital and have fluid pain from it.
- 51:55Ouch. In a dancing movie.
- 51:58Well. Where he needed his knees.
- 52:00He he likes to go ham and I have a little comment about that
- 52:04shortly, so I'll bring that up in a bit.
- 52:06But OK, who gets spin off? So I wanna show about the
- 52:10entertainment staff working at Kellerman's for the summer.
- 52:14An ensemble. TV show stage kind of thing.
- 52:16Well, like an ensemble TV show, there could be like 6 or seven
- 52:19of them that are main characters.
- 52:21We follow them on their day-to-day.
- 52:22They have romances. They could be going to other
- 52:24hotels and doing performances. There could be a lot of dancing.
- 52:27Yeah, there could be conflicts between them and the waiters,
- 52:30interactions with the staff. You could have like several
- 52:33seasons. Didn't think of that at all, but
- 52:37that would be good. Like just a different storylines
- 52:40for different. People.
- 52:40Yeah, because we see a little bit of it.
- 52:42With it, it would. It seems like it'd be like
- 52:44oranges and new, that kind of thing.
- 52:45Just a bunch of different storylines.
- 52:47It's obviously not in prison, but you know, working at resort.
- 52:51Yeah, I think it would be really interesting.
- 52:52Like we get little glimpses of it throughout the movie, but I'd
- 52:55like to focus on the entertainment stuff the most.
- 52:57They're the most. Interesting.
- 52:58Yeah. One of them got somebody
- 52:59pregnant. Yeah.
- 53:00Hell yeah. How about you?
- 53:02I wrote Johnny Castle sequel. I wanna see more of this guy
- 53:06because he's a really interesting character.
- 53:09You root for him. You want him to succeed.
- 53:12Does he get his own dance studio?
- 53:14Does he, you know, become a famous dancer?
- 53:18Does he become big on television?
- 53:20Yeah, they'd have to have something cool like that
- 53:22happened to him because in the movie he's like, my dad was able
- 53:24to get me into the union of the house painters and plasterers.
- 53:27Yeah, he doesn't want that for his life.
- 53:30It's boring. And he has such a beautiful gift
- 53:32like doing that, it feels like it would be such a waste.
- 53:35That's why I want to see the Johnny Castle sequel.
- 53:37Like what happens? Does he do house calls?
- 53:39Does he go, does he go to like rich women's homes and dance,
- 53:43teach them how to dance, You know, like.
- 53:45Yeah, Realistically though, he probably just get my house
- 53:47painter, which really sucks. That's kind of rude.
- 53:50Why would you say that? Because he has no money and he
- 53:53has no way of making his dreams come.
- 53:55True, and he has talent in his drive.
- 53:57Yeah, talent. Talent is only half of it.
- 53:59Yeah, but you just need drive. That's true.
- 54:02Double feature what you got. So I think flash dance
- 54:07Flashdance is actually became out, came out before this.
- 54:10Yeah, I think it came out in 1983 and 1984.
- 54:13Yeah. And it's also a very iconic
- 54:15dance movie. She's.
- 54:17It's racy. It's racy.
- 54:19She's a welder, but she wants to be a dancer and she is applying
- 54:22to a dance school and goes and dances for them and shows them
- 54:25how talented she is. Yeah.
- 54:27So it's a similar thing. Like she's in kind of.
- 54:29She has a class barrier in her way.
- 54:30And she couldn't. Do that.
- 54:32Well, it could be, Yeah, it could be a very similar story.
- 54:35But The funny thing about flash dance is I went on a Girls Again
- 54:38to my moms and my mom showed us the movie.
- 54:42Yeah. And we loved it, and we talked
- 54:45about it after how much we loved it.
- 54:46And then just recently, I was at my mom's house and I was like,
- 54:49yeah, you showed me flash dance. I loved it.
- 54:50And she's like, no, no, you didn't like it.
- 54:52And I was offended and I was like, no, I I loved it.
- 54:55And she's like, no, no, no. Like she wouldn't.
- 54:57She, she's trying to tell me that I didn't like it.
- 54:59She wouldn't accept it. She's like, no, no, you offended
- 55:01me and you didn't. You didn't like it enough.
- 55:04I. Was like OK shit because my mom
- 55:08this is another movie that my mom adores.
- 55:10Yeah, clearly. I'm guessing her dance moves
- 55:12come from that and from Dirty Dancing.
- 55:14Yeah, So what about you? My double feature is Ghost.
- 55:18I'm watching Dirty Dancing 1st and then Ghost with Patrick
- 55:21Swayze. Yeah.
- 55:22Because I kind of feel like it's a secret sequel, so.
- 55:26It's really sad. Dirty Dancing ends, Baby goes to
- 55:31the Peace Corps, they never get back together and then Patrick
- 55:35Swayze falls into like this really bougie Rob and then he
- 55:39meets some shitty people that betray him and then he dies and
- 55:43then ghost happens. You just fall in love with the
- 55:46other girl. First, yeah, I know he meets
- 55:48somebody else. Secret sequel.
- 55:50The funny thing about Ghost, yeah, is whenever I think of
- 55:55that movie, I think of building that little orange car that our
- 55:58son got for his 1st birthday. Yeah, because as we were
- 56:01building it, we were listening to a movie podcast about ghosts.
- 56:05We were. Yeah.
- 56:06I don't remember that. Well, you know, we sometimes
- 56:08listen to podcasts. Yeah, but I don't think it was
- 56:10that movie. Yes, it was.
- 56:11I was building the car and you were building his little table
- 56:15OHS and we listened to a podcast about that movie and which is so
- 56:18random cause I don't know that movie very well.
- 56:20Oh, OK. Yeah.
- 56:22So whenever I think that, I think.
- 56:23Is Laurence car cause I was putting the car together and
- 56:26then I don't remember. The no, I put the car together.
- 56:28You were putting the table together.
- 56:29Listen, yeah, he needed a lot of help, but they.
- 56:31Needed a little bit of help with with the tires and that's it, I
- 56:35did the rest. Massage and he kicked in and I
- 56:36had to help. You that tired that that that
- 56:38little car still it's still in, still in working order.
- 56:42Yes. Laughing at a funeral.
- 56:44Do you have anything for this? No.
- 56:46So the emotional scenes, they're they're a little bit shitty
- 56:49acting. There's some scenes where
- 56:51between baby and her dad were sitting in the gazebo and he's
- 56:54like, he's so fucking sad, he's so depressed that his daughter
- 57:00lied to him. Bro your daughter lied to you to
- 57:04help somebody who was in desperate need and.
- 57:08Yeah, but it was illegal and he asked her if is this illegal
- 57:10baby and she said no, she lied. About that, No, no, I know.
- 57:14I'm just saying like the the acting is not believable.
- 57:17Like he's talking to her and she's talking to him and it's
- 57:20just it's very pedestrian acting a lot of the scenes that way,
- 57:24but it has a little bit of charm to it.
- 57:27So it's it's pass, but it's some of the acting is very cringy.
- 57:32I'll give you that. But I, I think it is believable
- 57:34because he she's his golden child.
- 57:36And she really disappoints. And she turns out to not be the
- 57:39person he thought she was. Yeah.
- 57:41So he's like having a hard time accepting the person that she
- 57:44truly is. Yeah, I mean, parents need to
- 57:47fucking chill out. They need to understand that
- 57:49your kid is a person. They're going to do their own
- 57:52thing. And it's a hard pill to swallow,
- 57:53but you know, it's a fact of life.
- 57:56Unfortunately, it will come across that she's.
- 57:59A real daddy's girl with the. Beginning come across that one
- 58:01day as well. So I have a kiss, marry, kill
- 58:04for you. Sure.
- 58:06So kiss, marry, kill baby's mom. OK, Lisa, her sister and Penny.
- 58:15I have to kiss, marry or kill one of these people.
- 58:17Have to kiss one, marry one and kill 1.
- 58:20OK, it's gonna. Be kill this fucking harsh.
- 58:25I'll probably kiss Penny. OK.
- 58:29I'll kill the sister, OK, And I'll marry the mom.
- 58:33OK, good, I do. Nice.
- 58:34I do want you to kill Emily. Gilmore, the sister, is really
- 58:37fucking annoying. The mom actually is chill.
- 58:41Near the end of the movie, she actually speaks out.
- 58:43She says I'm fucking lying at the end of the movie.
- 58:45And then Penny's probably the one that would like give up a
- 58:49kiss and wouldn't be weird about it.
- 58:52So as you. Can probably give her a kiss mid
- 58:54dance. Yeah, she wouldn't mind.
- 58:57Like I've said several times on the mom, Yeah, Yeah, Baby's mom
- 59:00is Emily Gilmore and the Gilmore.
- 59:01Girls I know. Fucking amazing.
- 59:04Yeah, you mentioned that like 7 times.
- 59:06She's such a treasure. I love her so much.
- 59:08OK. Did I mention it while we were?
- 59:09Watching it, yeah, but she sucks.
- 59:11She sucks in Gilmore Girls. Isn't she awful?
- 59:13No, I am Emily Gilmore. Excuse me?
- 59:16She's Lorelei's mom, and she's the most reasonable one in the
- 59:19show in. Most episodes.
- 59:20But they're rich assholes, aren't they?
- 59:22They're portrayed that way, but to be honest, Lorelai Gilmore is
- 59:26a Dick to her mom a lot and doesn't tell her about big life
- 59:29events. Sure, and the mom understandably
- 59:31gets upset. OK.
- 59:33And people judge her for that. Emily Gilmore is the best
- 59:36character on that show. And I'll go, I'll go to bat on
- 59:37that. Alright, alright, I'm not
- 59:39arguing, I'm just asking. Lazy Sunday vibes.
- 59:43I said yes for the music and the dance numbers.
- 59:47I'll do it. The first time I watch it with
- 59:49my mom, it was a Sunday morning. It was like, more like, like,
- 59:53like 11. Yeah.
- 59:54Yeah. Like brunch time.
- 59:55Yeah. And it's a perfect time to watch
- 59:57that movie, especially on a summer day.
- 59:59Fair enough. And then?
- 1:00:00You go for like a little bike ride laughter.
- 1:00:01Or something. OK, really.
- 1:00:03And bike ride after Dirty Dancing?
- 1:00:05Yeah, OK. Or you take a long shower.
- 1:00:09Why? Because Patrick Swayze is so
- 1:00:12hot. That's gross.
- 1:00:16We're cutting that out. That's gross.
- 1:00:21OK, movie. Alias, What did you write?
- 1:00:25So I just said baby. Just baby.
- 1:00:29That'd be a good movie. Cause of the abortion too.
- 1:00:31Like it's it's all connected. Yo.
- 1:00:34She's underage, her names baby. There's a baby that gets
- 1:00:38aborted. You take that back?
- 1:00:40What? That's fucking offensive as
- 1:00:42fuck. It's called baby because that's
- 1:00:43the name of the. Man just saying like there's
- 1:00:46there's a correlation between the the name and what's
- 1:00:50happening in the movie. Cancelled why you picked the
- 1:00:53name? I also had Kellerman's Resort,
- 1:00:58which could also be the name of my show.
- 1:01:00OK. And I have summer dancing
- 1:01:03instead of Dirty Dancing. Ohk OK I got Haram dancing
- 1:01:09because it's funny because it's really Dirty Dancing.
- 1:01:12Also really Dirty Dancing, Dirtier Dancing, which would be
- 1:01:18a really neat good name for a sequel.
- 1:01:19Yeah. And then Baby's Choice.
- 1:01:23Oh my God. Because.
- 1:01:27Fucked up. It's connected to pro-choice and
- 1:01:31also baby's decision as to what she wants to do.
- 1:01:33Follow her dad's bullshit or dance her ass off.
- 1:01:37That's what you can decide if you want to keep that.
- 1:01:40It's fucked up. What's that?
- 1:01:43Why is baby's choice? It's her choice.
- 1:01:46OK, best performance. I wrote Patrick Swayze too.
- 1:01:54Yeah, he feels like a real true blue collar guy.
- 1:01:57Yeah, he's very believable. He's trying to do something else
- 1:02:00and something good with his life.
- 1:02:02Yeah, you root for him. I don't even give a fuck about
- 1:02:04baby, no offence. Not to mention he's a phenomenal
- 1:02:07dancer. Like he really is the one doing
- 1:02:09all that crazy. Movies about him.
- 1:02:11In my opinion, it's not about her.
- 1:02:14I mean, it's more about baby than Johnny, but we get to know
- 1:02:18Johnny through the movie. But he's way more relatable.
- 1:02:22He's. Way like because he's working
- 1:02:24hard, he's got a chip on his shoulder.
- 1:02:25He's figuring. Out he's going through the
- 1:02:27struggles he's struggling he's trying to make it he's trying to
- 1:02:30make something of himself. She's basically got everything
- 1:02:33ready for her. Oh, you want to go to
- 1:02:35university? Her her dad, he's about to hand
- 1:02:38out letters for other fucking guys at the resort to get their
- 1:02:42them into medical school. Like she's got a clear path.
- 1:02:46This guy's trying to make it on his own steam.
- 1:02:48It's really commendable. Yeah.
- 1:02:51I mean, that's just my thing. What do you think?
- 1:02:53Yeah, Patrick Swayze gives the best performance.
- 1:02:56I mean, I do think Baby's performance, like I was saying
- 1:02:59earlier, yeah, it is. It is good because she does have
- 1:03:02like, this silver spoon lifestyle.
- 1:03:04But she's still like, I wanna go into the Peace Corps.
- 1:03:06I wanna do something good with my life.
- 1:03:07I wanna make a difference. Yeah, well, also growing up very
- 1:03:13pampered, Yeah, in the lap of luxury.
- 1:03:16She is trying to do something positive with her.
- 1:03:19Life, She's a good person. Yeah, no, I didn't say she's bad
- 1:03:22ones, just he's his character is way more relatable and just
- 1:03:27you're rooting for the guy from the the moment he starts.
- 1:03:31Going to shower, thoughts. Alright, so I said this while we
- 1:03:34were watching it, but the romantic lake lift was shot in
- 1:03:4040°F. Sure, 4°C weather or water in
- 1:03:44October, and it left the actor shivering in blue, defying the
- 1:03:50summer setting. You can't tell they're cold, so
- 1:03:52they're really fighting through it.
- 1:03:53But Jennifer Grey, I heard her talk about it once and she was
- 1:03:56like I I wondered if my nipples could explode, I was so cold.
- 1:03:59Such a weird thing to say. Also you could see her nipples
- 1:04:01right through her shirt and that scene.
- 1:04:03Yeah, because the water was ice cold.
- 1:04:04You know, and she's not wearing a bra.
- 1:04:07That's a very provocative. I think she's wearing a sports
- 1:04:09bra. We saw a miner's titty.
- 1:04:11She's 26. We're 2 movies into our we're
- 1:04:14we're we're 13 movies into our podcast and we've seen 2 minor
- 1:04:18titties. She's 26 IRL.
- 1:04:20He's yeah, she's 26 IRL. Was this movie a commentary on
- 1:04:24anti abortion laws? Characters are left to make
- 1:04:27their quote UN quote choices, but it seems like they're being
- 1:04:30pushed into, you know, whatever direction they want to, either
- 1:04:33by parents or by society. There's a lot of.
- 1:04:36Well, in Penny's case, she doesn't have the money or the
- 1:04:38ability to care for a child by herself, so she feels trapped
- 1:04:41and she's like, the only option is an abortion and it's illegal.
- 1:04:45Yeah. So she has to go and get a back
- 1:04:47alley abortion. No, I I get that part, but also
- 1:04:50like you have baby, she's not pregnant, but she's trying to
- 1:04:54make her own choice. And then people, society is
- 1:04:57telling her, no, you gotta do this.
- 1:04:58You're not allowed to dance. You're not allowed to do this
- 1:05:01with this guy. You have to follow this path.
- 1:05:04Like, is this a commentary? Like the whole movie?
- 1:05:07Is it a commentary? Being pro-choice?
- 1:05:10No, I don't think I think you're reading too much subtext.
- 1:05:12I mean, there is some commentary about it in Penny's decision,
- 1:05:15but baby, it's more so talking about like breaking free of
- 1:05:18shackles and defying limitations.
- 1:05:20Such as anti abortion. Laws, yeah, but it's not
- 1:05:23particularly talking about abortion.
- 1:05:25It's just talking about. I know, I know.
- 1:05:27It's kind of like they're both fighting their own battle in a
- 1:05:30certain way. Yeah, fair enough.
- 1:05:32As the dancing scenes progress, we see babies slowly starting to
- 1:05:35wear more makeup and less clothing to the point where
- 1:05:38she's just dancing with him in undies in a thin white T-shirt.
- 1:05:42So the movie is really a sexual awakening for Baby and for all
- 1:05:46the young girls watching it. And that's why you don't show it
- 1:05:48to your daughter. Just saying.
- 1:05:52Does the baby go back to join the Peace Corps after this
- 1:05:54bullshit? What happens?
- 1:05:55Like what's the fallout? Does does Johnny become a famous
- 1:05:58dancer? Like do they continue dating?
- 1:06:00Do they exchange numbers? Listen, I'm gonna be an asshole
- 1:06:03right now and say baby goes home with her family.
- 1:06:06And forgets all about him. Forgets all about him.
- 1:06:08Goes goes to Mount Holyoke in the fall, goes into Peace Corps.
- 1:06:12Johnny goes and buys a house painter.
- 1:06:14Why that's so shitty? Well, this was their This was
- 1:06:17their last chance to have a good summer.
- 1:06:19What the fuck? So bleak.
- 1:06:22That's terrible. I mean, realistically, but like,
- 1:06:25my hope is that like, he went on to be a famous dancer.
- 1:06:28She went to the Peace Corps and they kept in touch.
- 1:06:29Then they got married. OK, so that kind of goes into
- 1:06:31what my next thing is here. I think this movie, most of it
- 1:06:35was just a dream because it's narrated OK Baby's telling us
- 1:06:41her story. Narrated in the very first.
- 1:06:42Scene though, no, but she's narrating and she's telling the
- 1:06:46whole story, the narrations, the part she let me tell you the
- 1:06:50story of that and then the ending is very much like a
- 1:06:53daydreaming like she's sitting in the chair with her parents
- 1:06:57and her sister in the corner right.
- 1:06:59And then Johnny just walks in, tells her parents off basically
- 1:07:04and picks her up takes her to the stage and grabs the mic and
- 1:07:09just starts talking like they would have escorted this guy out
- 1:07:13of the place. He's been fired.
- 1:07:15Like they just let him talk and then he's like, we're gonna
- 1:07:17dance and you're going to fucking much and they're just
- 1:07:20let it happen. It's a complete fallacy.
- 1:07:23Like there, it's a Daydream. She's sitting there daydreaming
- 1:07:26about. I wish this happened to me.
- 1:07:28I wish Pat Patrick Swayze, Johnny Castle would come back
- 1:07:32and take me and show everybody our beautiful dance routine.
- 1:07:36It's a. It's a.
- 1:07:37It's a dream leaving anticlimactic too because he
- 1:07:40leaves like 1 scene before that and it's like she's like the
- 1:07:43wind is playing and it's like oh Johnny's leaving and then like
- 1:07:45literally the next scene is back.
- 1:07:47I think it's a it's a Daydream like.
- 1:07:50It could be. She's sitting there and she's
- 1:07:52embarrassed and she's watching her sister fucking with her
- 1:07:55boobs out, doing the the terrible.
- 1:07:58Dance. Yeah, I.
- 1:08:00Think it's all a? Dream.
- 1:08:02Yeah, I think Johnny, Johnny Castle gets told off by the dad
- 1:08:07and they say goodbye at the car and then he he pieces out.
- 1:08:12Yeah, but I mean that and. Especially if you're telling me
- 1:08:15that she just goes to the Peace Corps and he becomes a painter.
- 1:08:19I'm I'm not saying that that's what happened.
- 1:08:21I'm saying realistically that's probably what happened, but I
- 1:08:23hope for something more joyful. But anyway, moving on.
- 1:08:27Jennifer Grey was so ticklish that she and Patrick Swayze had
- 1:08:30to redo the arm stroking scene like 20 times.
- 1:08:33So in the dance montage, it shows her laughing from her
- 1:08:36armpit being stroked, basically. Yeah, that's real.
- 1:08:39Maybe she just lied and liked it.
- 1:08:41She's like do. It again.
- 1:08:42Well, she really couldn't handle it.
- 1:08:43There's there's a point where she's like smiling when he takes
- 1:08:45her arm because she knows she's gonna laugh.
- 1:08:47Yeah, that was real. She really was about that
- 1:08:49ticklish. So they had to redo it like 20
- 1:08:51times before they got her not laughing.
- 1:08:53Speaking of Patrick Swayze and Jennifer Grey, did you know that
- 1:08:56they had a beef before the starting of this movie?
- 1:09:00Yeah, that's from their movie Red Dawn.
- 1:09:01They hated each other. Yeah, she had a real problem
- 1:09:05with him because kind of like what you were saying, he wanted
- 1:09:08to do the stunts on his own. He was like a workaholic
- 1:09:12professional perfectionist. And she was just very chill and
- 1:09:15happy go lucky. And he fucking hated it.
- 1:09:17He's like, I need, you know, he's like, why?
- 1:09:19Like he he was Mamba mentality and she wasn't and he didn't
- 1:09:23like it. And they, they butted heads on
- 1:09:25Red Dawn. And then at the beginning of
- 1:09:27this, they were butting heads. And then he apologized.
- 1:09:30To her actually had to convince her to do this movie.
- 1:09:33Well, he apologized to her. She wasn't going to do it.
- 1:09:35And he convinced her. He said that our chemistry is
- 1:09:37really good. You have to do it.
- 1:09:38Yeah. And yeah, they, they also butted
- 1:09:40heads on this. And then he apologized, and then
- 1:09:42they got. Along he apologized, they got
- 1:09:43along, but you can tell that I saw some of the scenes.
- 1:09:46He's fucking fed up with her shit and I'm like, is that real?
- 1:09:50It's gotta be real because it's it's too.
- 1:09:52It's too realistic. Now that I know what I know what
- 1:09:56else you got? Do you think Penny was in love
- 1:09:59with Johnny? Yeah, of course, 100%.
- 1:10:02Lean, of course. She's supposed to not be
- 1:10:04interested in him. No, she is.
- 1:10:06You don't dance with somebody like that all the time and
- 1:10:09they're your main dance partner and you're both attractive and
- 1:10:12yadda yadda yadda and not grow feelings.
- 1:10:15Yeah, and she tells him, like to cut it off with baby.
- 1:10:18Yeah. And every time she sees him,
- 1:10:19she's like Johnny. Yeah.
- 1:10:21Like in her room. Like, it's like.
- 1:10:22Why so? Member when?
- 1:10:23Remember when she found out? Like she looked at them and the
- 1:10:26she figured out that they were a thing?
- 1:10:28Yeah, she was in bed. She was like, you could tell
- 1:10:30there was this like bittersweet look to her.
- 1:10:32Face, That's what I'm saying. Is she like, jealous in that
- 1:10:34moment because she's in love with her?
- 1:10:35Yeah, I wouldn't say jealous, just kind of like, you know,
- 1:10:39kind of wish it was her without the envy part.
- 1:10:43Yeah, Robbie, this fucking guy. So in a lot of movies there's a
- 1:10:49happy ending. The couple, you know, they get
- 1:10:51away, they do their own thing, whatever, yada yada.
- 1:10:54Robbie should have gotten his companions.
- 1:10:56He doesn't. This fucking guy at the end of
- 1:10:59the movie, Johnny punches him a couple times, beats him up a
- 1:11:02little and says you're not worth it.
- 1:11:04And then the dad's about to give him a a letter of recommendation
- 1:11:09to the medical school. For Yale Medical.
- 1:11:11Yeah, and then he finds out that I guess this Robbie guy just
- 1:11:15tells him, basically, and he finds out that he's the one who
- 1:11:19impregnated Penny and did nothing to help and he didn't
- 1:11:22care what happened to the baby. And he takes the letter back.
- 1:11:26Nothing happens. That rich asshole kid Robbie is
- 1:11:30gonna leave that job and go to whatever school he wants and
- 1:11:35become whatever he wants because he's got a silver fucking spoon
- 1:11:38in his mouth. He never gets his comeuppance.
- 1:11:41Well, he does get beat up. He doesn't.
- 1:11:43He doesn't get his letter of recommendation.
- 1:11:45That he wanted. And he doesn't get to bang Lisa.
- 1:11:48But he doesn't have an arc, he's just a shithead.
- 1:11:51He doesn't need to have an arc. He's he's just like side.
- 1:11:53Character that we're supposed to be there in these movies.
- 1:11:56Think him getting beat up is supposedly his comeuppance?
- 1:11:58It's not because he's an arrogant Dick to the dad at the
- 1:12:01end when he's getting his letter.
- 1:12:03He's not. Yeah.
- 1:12:04You know what I'm saying? Like these characters need their
- 1:12:07come uppance. They need, you know, your your
- 1:12:09Dick, you're gonna get karma. Karma comes back to you.
- 1:12:12Like, what the fuck, man? Weird.
- 1:12:15It's it's that happens in Movies Now where somebody does some bad
- 1:12:19shit. It comes up like later in the
- 1:12:21movie, but this, it's just like Nana.
- 1:12:24I'm a rich kid. I'm good, we're good to go.
- 1:12:26Well, sticking on the on the Robbie, just because you brought
- 1:12:28it up, what do you think he did to Lisa at the golf course?
- 1:12:31What do you mean? Like she's hobbling away from
- 1:12:33the golf course and she goes, I don't hear an apology, Robbie.
- 1:12:36And he goes, why don't you go back to your mommy and daddy?
- 1:12:38Maybe you'll hear one of your dreams.
- 1:12:41He probably fucking hit her with a Golf Club.
- 1:12:42Who knows? The guy's nuts.
- 1:12:44She hit her with a Golf Club. He obviously like somehow
- 1:12:46sexually assaulted her, but do you think he did?
- 1:12:49You think he grabbed a booby? Ohe I didn't go there.
- 1:12:51I think he just physically harmed her, like with something.
- 1:12:54I don't think he sexually assaulted her.
- 1:12:55Why would you think he hit her with a Golf Club?
- 1:12:58I don't know cause he's a fucking weirdo.
- 1:13:00No, I think he was trying to get it in and she was like, get away
- 1:13:03from me. And it got like he did.
- 1:13:05And then she was like hobbling away on her broken heel.
- 1:13:07Another reason why this guy never got his comeuppance he
- 1:13:10should have got. So it's little rapey.
- 1:13:12Yeah, he should have. You know what?
- 1:13:13It should have happened at the end.
- 1:13:14Penny should have embarrassed him in front of everyone and he
- 1:13:18should have got a public shaming.
- 1:13:20Yeah, alright. So does this movie hit different
- 1:13:23as a parent? It does because of a few
- 1:13:26reasons, like just showing it to your kids.
- 1:13:30I mean, it's not a movie for kids, in my opinion.
- 1:13:36It's not a movie for your teenage daughter.
- 1:13:38And my opinion is no, seriously. Stop being so uptight.
- 1:13:42No, I'm saying it's it's called Dirty Dancing.
- 1:13:44You don't think a teenager can watch that A.
- 1:13:47Teenager, a malleable teenager? Probably not.
- 1:13:51But yeah, that's the thing. Like there's things in this
- 1:13:53movie that happen and the reason I find that it hits different as
- 1:13:57a parent is not because of what happens.
- 1:14:00Like, yeah, the scene where the girl, like pennies you gets
- 1:14:03pregnated and she has to have an abortion, like does it off the
- 1:14:06box and it's like really shady. But you feel like this movie is
- 1:14:10it's manipulative. And if your kids watch at a
- 1:14:14young age, I feel like they can. The characters aren't real.
- 1:14:18They're not. Relatable, I told.
- 1:14:19Just a campy, soapy movie. I'm showing it to our daughter.
- 1:14:24And you're going. To have to deal with that
- 1:14:25because it was a very special experience that I had with my.
- 1:14:28Mom, when she turns 37, you can show it to her no problem.
- 1:14:35For me I said oddly when I watched this movie I still feel
- 1:14:39like I'm baby's age and I relate to her much more than the
- 1:14:42parents which I think is by design because they don't
- 1:14:46develop the parents characters very much.
- 1:14:48So I think you're supposed to kind of side with baby but it
- 1:14:52doesn't really hit different for me as a parent.
- 1:14:53Like I I feel the same as I did as that 14 year old girl on the
- 1:14:56couch with my mom watching for the first time.
- 1:14:59That being said, if my young minor daughter was having sex
- 1:15:02with and dating a 24 year old, good, I would be pretty upset
- 1:15:06about it. Yeah, I mean, don't get me
- 1:15:09wrong, it's a fun movie, but my thing is that it's kind of got
- 1:15:13this twisted sense of reality because it's a fun romp and
- 1:15:17whatever, you know, it's like summer time and there's dancing
- 1:15:21and it's provocative and things like that.
- 1:15:23But I have literally seen people watch movies like that of
- 1:15:27different kinds of different languages, and been manipulated
- 1:15:32into thinking that that's how people work.
- 1:15:35And you're smiling at me, but you don't understand what I'm
- 1:15:39talking about. Babe, you're allowed to show a
- 1:15:41teenager a movie like this. There's a lot worse things you
- 1:15:44could show a teenager. No, I know, I know.
- 1:15:46But this movie is, it's masked. It's like people will take it
- 1:15:50and be like, oh, this is OK. Like I can do this.
- 1:15:53I can be a fucking asshole and impregnate a girl and then just
- 1:15:58peace out and everything. Will be fine.
- 1:15:59Nobody thinks that watching this.
- 1:16:01That's ridiculous, that. You're there are some twisted
- 1:16:03people are ridiculous. There are some twisted people.
- 1:16:06How many, how many watermelons out of 10 do you give this
- 1:16:08movie? Watermelons.
- 1:16:10Yeah, cause he was. I was gonna say merengues.
- 1:16:14No Pechanga's. You guys.
- 1:16:16How many Pechanga's at a time do you give this?
- 1:16:18Movie. So I no, I'm gonna give
- 1:16:20watermelons. Fucker Pachanga.
- 1:16:22I'm gonna give this movie for what it is.
- 1:16:27I'll give it a A8 and eight out of 10 K, 8 out of 10
- 1:16:31watermelons. I gave it a nine watermelons out
- 1:16:33of 10. Yeah, it's a great dancing,
- 1:16:36really intense, like Patrick Swayze the movie if you had
- 1:16:41somebody who was slightly less good as the male.
- 1:16:45Has a great. President it would have because
- 1:16:48babies pretty good, but Patrick Swayze's fucking top notch in
- 1:16:51this movie. Just saying he's the Swayze.
- 1:16:54The Swayze is on on like he's on.
- 1:16:56It crazy Swayze honestly. Yeah, I call them the sways.
- 1:17:04Oh, I'm going to end the podcast with our baby crying.
- 1:17:07Yeah, so that is it for Dirty Dancing, Haram dancing, really
