- 0:01Speaker 1: Ladies and gentlemen, could I please have your attention?
- 0:05Speaker 2: This is a Patriots Unfiltered emergency podcast.
- 0:09Speaker 3: All of you to stop what you're.
- 0:11Speaker 4: Doing, presented by Toyota's official website.
- 0:15Speaker 5: For deals, buy a Toyota dot com. All right, I'm
- 0:21Speaker 5: not sure it qualifies as an emergency, but I think
- 0:24Speaker 5: it's uh yeah, I think it's enough news where it
- 0:30Speaker 5: warrants a special podcast, you know, so we're not gonna
- 0:34Speaker 5: be talking till tuesday, right, so I didn't want to wait.
- 0:37Speaker 1: No, yeah, this was the right move.
- 0:39Speaker 6: We got coordinators, coordinators here, so coordinate.
- 0:42Speaker 5: It's Deuce at s Evan, it's Paul, it's me, Matt Nabooth.
- 0:45Speaker 5: And uh, of course, what prompted this is the hiring
- 0:48Speaker 5: of Alex van Pelt yesterday as offensive coordinator. And that
- 0:52Speaker 5: rounds out the coordinator positions.
- 0:55Speaker 6: Of well, yeah, I mean all of them are official.
- 0:56Speaker 6: The other two were reported. Yeah, no, it's all official.
- 0:58Speaker 5: Yeah, so that was the release came out, so we're
- 1:01Speaker 5: free to talk freely about that. And also I think,
- 1:06Speaker 5: you know, again it's just a report, but I'm encouraged
- 1:09Speaker 5: that they're looking for a new offensive line.
- 1:11Speaker 6: Coachah that too, And also just right now. News news
- 1:14Speaker 6: out right now that Steve Belichick and and Vinie Sinceri
- 1:19Speaker 6: are interviewing with Washington with Jed Fish and his Washington
- 1:24Speaker 6: Husky Husky the commanders. Okay, a little bit of juggling
- 1:28Speaker 6: going on right now for sure across the board with
- 1:30Speaker 6: all the coaches.
- 1:31Speaker 5: Okay, all right, so let's let's start up. You know,
- 1:34Speaker 5: so the news came so just little insider, we heard
- 1:39Speaker 5: that Alex van Pelt was in the building and apparently
- 1:42Speaker 5: they didn't leave, let him leave until he signed. So
- 1:46Speaker 5: you know when you heard that, yes, what did you think?
- 1:49Speaker 5: And now that they've signed him, what do you think?
- 1:53Speaker 7: Me go first, all right, I like it.
- 1:55Speaker 6: I mean I'm not I'm not blown away by it,
- 1:57Speaker 6: but I like the fact that he's an experienced guy
- 1:59Speaker 6: that he's been around. He seems like he's got a
- 2:01Speaker 6: good reputation for, you know, working with quarterbacks. I mean,
- 2:04Speaker 6: we talked on the show this year about the you know,
- 2:07Speaker 6: admirable job that Cleveland did going through four quarterbacks, so
- 2:10Speaker 6: you know.
- 2:10Speaker 5: He was part of that and he deserves credit.
- 2:13Speaker 6: I'm excited just that it's a new offense, It's something new.
- 2:15Speaker 7: To kind of understand.
- 2:16Speaker 6: And you know, Evan will will jump into, you know,
- 2:18Speaker 6: some of what his impressions are of that offense, but overall,
- 2:22Speaker 6: you know, it's just I think, look, we're we're rebuilding now,
- 2:25Speaker 6: and you know you have to kind of hire the
- 2:27Speaker 6: guys that are willing to come in and take this challenge,
- 2:30Speaker 6: you know, of not really having a lot to work with.
- 2:32Speaker 6: So I like it has He hasn't called plays. There
- 2:35Speaker 6: are certainly he's kicked around a little bit, so there
- 2:38Speaker 6: are some concerns as far as that.
- 2:39Speaker 7: But I mean, honestly, with the end.
- 2:40Speaker 6: Of the day, when you think about what kind of
- 2:42Speaker 6: guys you're going to be getting, you're not going to
- 2:43Speaker 6: get a perfect candidate probably here. So I think I
- 2:46Speaker 6: think it's a good hire, you know, but we'll have
- 2:48Speaker 6: to see how it goes.
- 2:49Speaker 1: Evan.
- 2:50Speaker 3: Oh, we can get into the scheme stuff. Just in general,
- 2:53Speaker 3: you do hear a lot of good things about his culture,
- 2:56Speaker 3: that he's a culture builder, a guy that players really
- 2:59Speaker 3: like gravitating towards and playing for. And I know that
- 3:02Speaker 3: people in Cleveland were a little bit taken aback and
- 3:05Speaker 3: maybe even disappointed that him and Stunt Mitchell and some
- 3:08Speaker 3: of the other staff was let go. I think that's
- 3:10Speaker 3: a big part of it that we should discuss as well.
- 3:12Speaker 3: They're running backs coach Stumpt Mitchell is one of the
- 3:14Speaker 3: best in the business and he's a free agent, so
- 3:17Speaker 3: it's a potential guy that could come here. They also
- 3:21Speaker 3: parted ways with their tight ends coach that was on
- 3:23Speaker 3: Van Pelt's staff, so maybe those two guys end up
- 3:26Speaker 3: here in New England in the same roles with the Patriots.
- 3:29Speaker 3: So I love the experience. I think when you look
- 3:31Speaker 3: at the other three coaches really, including Girodmeo, there wasn't
- 3:35Speaker 3: a ton of experience. There wasn't a ton of guys
- 3:38Speaker 3: that have been in the league a lot. I'm not
- 3:40Speaker 3: like too worried about the play calling. I think that
- 3:42Speaker 3: gets a little bit overrated at times. I think the
- 3:45Speaker 3: one thing that worries me is that they made a
- 3:47Speaker 3: decision to move on from him because of the usage
- 3:50Speaker 3: of Deshaun Watson in the offense. And they're married to
- 3:53Speaker 3: Deshaun Watson. They have to make Deshaun Watson work and
- 3:57Speaker 3: it wasn't a good fit for the things that they
- 3:58Speaker 3: were doing schematically with Watson. So I look at the
- 4:02Speaker 3: draft and say, is Jaden Daniels really a fit now
- 4:06Speaker 3: for what they're going to be doing. Is Caleb Williams
- 4:09Speaker 3: really a fit for what they're going to be doing.
- 4:10Speaker 5: Well, we'll get out, we'll get into that. You know,
- 4:13Speaker 5: there's no time limit here, but you know, a week.
- 4:16Speaker 1: Yeah, no, And I would agree with the boys. I
- 4:19Speaker 1: like the experience factor. We've made a lot of a
- 4:24Speaker 1: lot of these guys hadn't really ever worked with quarterbacks.
- 4:27Speaker 1: He has, So I like those kinds of elements. Eighteen
- 4:30Speaker 1: years in the NFL, so yeah, And I do like
- 4:36Speaker 1: his reputation. I heard some of the same stuff that
- 4:39Speaker 1: Evan did about players coach. You know, he was well
- 4:43Speaker 1: liked and talked to some media guys, and evidently in
- 4:50Speaker 1: Cleveland it wasn't necessarily a Stefanski decision. It was high
- 4:55Speaker 1: above you know, so it was more from the ownership GM.
- 5:01Speaker 1: I like him even more now, well, yeah, because it's
- 5:04Speaker 1: not necessarily like Kevin Stefanski. I think he's done a
- 5:07Speaker 1: pretty good job as a football coach. He didn't say
- 5:09Speaker 1: I got to get rid of this coordinator. He's not
- 5:12Speaker 1: doing the job. It was, you know, above him. So
- 5:14Speaker 1: I do feel better about it.
- 5:16Speaker 5: I mean, one of your guys. Paul was on the
- 5:18Speaker 5: radio this morning, Albert Breer from the MMQB, and you know,
- 5:23Speaker 5: he was saying the same thing. He said, people in
- 5:25Speaker 5: Cleveland loved him, you know. So this wasn't like a
- 5:27Speaker 5: performance driven decision over there.
- 5:31Speaker 1: No, because if you look at the performance, it's exactly
- 5:33Speaker 1: what Mike said. I mean, he said he won games
- 5:36Speaker 1: with four different quarterbacks, forced to use five, and they
- 5:39Speaker 1: lost Nick Chubb, who was by far and away their
- 5:41Speaker 1: best player. On offense, they went through a litany of
- 5:45Speaker 1: offensive lineman, which is a big time strength of the team. Now,
- 5:50Speaker 1: those are all the pluses, I would say. The minuses
- 5:52Speaker 1: for me are stylistic. I think he runs the ball
- 5:55Speaker 1: more than I like.
- 5:57Speaker 5: But that's just a job.
- 5:58Speaker 1: That's just a me thing. Yeah no, but that's the
- 6:01Speaker 1: way they play.
- 6:01Speaker 3: Yeah, yeah, that was what I was getting at as well.
- 6:04Speaker 1: There.
- 6:04Speaker 3: Their scheme, their run scheme is fantastic. It's diverse, it's
- 6:08Speaker 3: one of the best in the league. They run zone,
- 6:10Speaker 3: they run man schemes, they run everything under the sun,
- 6:14Speaker 3: which they do they do. That's actually one of their
- 6:16Speaker 3: favorite bil it one of their favorites out of the
- 6:19Speaker 3: gun and at on their se zone blocking scheme, little
- 6:21Speaker 3: zone blocking. So they when they started with when they
- 6:24Speaker 3: started with Stefan Ski early on the first couple of years,
- 6:27Speaker 3: they were a wide zone team. That was what they did.
- 6:30Speaker 3: And then, like a lot of these wide zone teams,
- 6:32Speaker 3: teams started to adjust to that system and that scheme,
- 6:35Speaker 3: so they started running it down hill more and to
- 6:38Speaker 3: try to combat that. So I think the biggest concern though,
- 6:41Speaker 3: is that they want to play under center. They want
- 6:43Speaker 3: to play out a heavy personnel groupings, and when you
- 6:45Speaker 3: start to think about where they go personnel wise, to
- 6:49Speaker 3: Paul's point, it's just that's the type of offense that
- 6:52Speaker 3: they're gonna be. They're gonna be a run offense that
- 6:54Speaker 3: runs play action off of all the run action, and
- 6:57Speaker 3: that's how they're going to try to generate their big
- 6:58Speaker 3: plays is off of play act, which is not a
- 7:00Speaker 3: bad thing. It just fits a certain type of people
- 7:03Speaker 3: and a certain type of person So.
- 7:04Speaker 5: Now this guy, before he was at Cleveland, he was
- 7:06Speaker 5: at Green Bay for a little bit, and at that time,
- 7:08Speaker 5: Elliott Wolf was at Green Bay. So is this an
- 7:11Speaker 5: Elliott Wolf.
- 7:12Speaker 1: Could influence tiring they did?
- 7:15Speaker 6: They touched, Yeah, Well, he's got a couple of connections
- 7:18Speaker 6: Paul for Flacco. Obviously you're a big Flaco fan. And
- 7:20Speaker 6: then he backed up Ledsoe in Buffalo a little bit,
- 7:23Speaker 6: so you got you know, you have some connections to him.
- 7:25Speaker 5: Yeah, hey Alex so yeah, you know Drew.
- 7:31Speaker 1: I know Drew. I don't need him.
- 7:32Speaker 7: Yeah, so isn't too awesome?
- 7:34Speaker 5: Yeah, so I know that.
- 7:35Speaker 1: Again, I don't need him.
- 7:38Speaker 5: Okay, So you think Evan he comes in with a
- 7:42Speaker 5: certain philosophy.
- 7:44Speaker 3: Yeah, I think that Schematically, when you watch their their film,
- 7:47Speaker 3: the best thing that they do is run the ball
- 7:50Speaker 3: and then mary play action off of the run. They
- 7:52Speaker 3: run a lot of bootleg, and they run a lot
- 7:55Speaker 3: of different pullers where they'll they'll pull lineman, get that
- 7:57Speaker 3: to influence linebackers to step up the run gaps and
- 8:00Speaker 3: then hit David Njoku for a cross or behind it
- 8:03Speaker 3: or something like that. So when you look at personnel
- 8:07Speaker 3: under center, being able to be a little bit nimble
- 8:10Speaker 3: to bootleg is a big thing. And just in general,
- 8:14Speaker 3: those are the types of things that a lot of
- 8:15Speaker 3: these college quarterbacks that are coming in don't have a
- 8:18Speaker 3: ton of experience with. I think I saw a stat
- 8:21Speaker 3: that there's a combined maybe sixty snaps under center between
- 8:25Speaker 3: the top five quarterbacks in this draft, because the college
- 8:28Speaker 3: game is all spread, right, It's all gun, spread, air
- 8:31Speaker 3: raid like all that kind of stuff. So marrying a
- 8:34Speaker 3: quarterback like I'm not putting Jayden Daniels under center twenty
- 8:37Speaker 3: five times a game. It just doesn't make any sense
- 8:39Speaker 3: for his skill set. And I think that's what Cleveland
- 8:42Speaker 3: ran into with Deshaun Watson, that it just didn't make
- 8:44Speaker 3: sense to run this type of offense to a t
- 8:48Speaker 3: at least with a guy like Deshaun Watson who wants
- 8:50Speaker 3: the field spread, that wants to be able to run.
- 8:53Speaker 3: So that's gonna be interesting in Cleveland if that's the
- 8:55Speaker 3: direction that they're.
- 8:56Speaker 5: Going to move it. So what I'm getting at is,
- 8:58Speaker 5: do you think now that now that we've got Alex
- 9:01Speaker 5: van Pelt, that's going to strongly influence who they want
- 9:07Speaker 5: as quarterbacks?
- 9:08Speaker 6: I mean, so Ian Rappaport was on the radio or
- 9:10Speaker 6: it was on TV, you know, within the last hour
- 9:14Speaker 6: basically saying that he's going to be heavily involved with
- 9:17Speaker 6: the development of whoever the next quarterback.
- 9:19Speaker 1: So I didn't listen to it.
- 9:21Speaker 5: I saw the quotes, but the selection who they select, right, Okay.
- 9:27Speaker 1: Right, you know, and I do agree with what Evan's
- 9:30Speaker 1: talking about now, the things that we don't know, like
- 9:32Speaker 1: just as a we're writing this stuff up. As you said,
- 9:36Speaker 1: you know, we sort of got word that Alex Vappelt
- 9:38Speaker 1: was in the building yesterday, so you try to get
- 9:40Speaker 1: a little prepared. And I just did you know elementary
- 9:44Speaker 1: Google search, just like you know Kevin Stefanski's offense, you know,
- 9:48Speaker 1: like what and you get all kinds of like uh,
- 9:51Speaker 1: you know, Reddit kind of stuff, and you get different
- 9:54Speaker 1: and everything that stack. Yeah, well Evan just talked about
- 9:59Speaker 1: is like, you know, the heavy play action misdirection. I
- 10:02Speaker 1: kind of thought back to the old Denver, you know,
- 10:06Speaker 1: in towards the end of like Elway and then into
- 10:08Speaker 1: like Jake Plummer with under center, the hard you know,
- 10:12Speaker 1: play action we're going to show with the half boot
- 10:15Speaker 1: and throw it back. And I remember, just anecdotally, I
- 10:18Speaker 1: Knowduce you always get amazed by this, but Flacco hit
- 10:22Speaker 1: a bunch of these in December, you know, these these
- 10:24Speaker 1: balls downfield, you know, hitting Nadjoku who's basically uncovered at
- 10:29Speaker 1: the opposite hash. So that you can make big plays
- 10:32Speaker 1: in the passing game with that if you have a
- 10:33Speaker 1: big arm. And the question that I don't know is
- 10:38Speaker 1: is that Stefanski's offense that Van Pelt adapted to or
- 10:42Speaker 1: is that the way Van Pelt wants to play? Also,
- 10:44Speaker 1: how heavily involved was he in game planning? I know
- 10:47Speaker 1: he wasn't calling the plays, but kind of agree with
- 10:50Speaker 1: Evan on that's that individual element's a little overrated. But
- 10:54Speaker 1: I wonder if he wants to play a different way
- 10:56Speaker 1: or if that's his style. If that's his style, I
- 10:59Speaker 1: don't love that stuff. I think that's kind of a
- 11:01Speaker 1: hit or miss thing, Like if you don't hit those plays,
- 11:03Speaker 1: your offense kind of bogs down.
- 11:05Speaker 6: Well, especially where you got just Rmandra Stevenson. So what
- 11:07Speaker 6: kind of run game are you going to be play
- 11:08Speaker 6: actioning out of? You know, like I mean that that
- 11:11Speaker 6: have to be rebuilt.
- 11:12Speaker 5: They kind of have to have the threat of the
- 11:13Speaker 5: run before that works work to be done there. So
- 11:17Speaker 5: throw me a name that sin Alex Van Pelt pick
- 11:20Speaker 5: at quarterback Drake May.
- 11:23Speaker 3: If I was the Patriots, I would run the card
- 11:25Speaker 3: up to the podium. If Drake May is at the table,
- 11:27Speaker 3: if this is the way that they're going to play,
- 11:29Speaker 3: he's the only guy out of those top three quarterbacks
- 11:31Speaker 3: that I feel really good about.
- 11:32Speaker 5: It and to get Drake May. Is that going to
- 11:34Speaker 5: require making a move to number two?
- 11:37Speaker 3: It could? It could. I mean Daniel Jeremiah's on TV.
- 11:40Speaker 3: He said, Patriots guaranteed that you would lock it in
- 11:44Speaker 3: quarterback commanders, he said he wouldn't guarantee that they're going
- 11:47Speaker 3: to take a quurt.
- 11:48Speaker 5: So let me ask a strategy question. If you're at
- 11:50Speaker 5: number three and you're trying to move to two, but
- 11:53Speaker 5: there's other people below you that want to move to
- 11:56Speaker 5: two the person at too, isn't it better to do
- 11:58Speaker 5: the deal with the people that are behind the Patriots
- 12:00Speaker 5: because I'm gonna get more because they have to move up.
- 12:02Speaker 3: Further depends on who you want. Like if the commanders
- 12:06Speaker 3: are sitting there saying that they need to leave with
- 12:08Speaker 3: Marvin Harrison Junior.
- 12:10Speaker 5: Okay, so they have to have the three spots.
- 12:11Speaker 3: Then you have to have the three spot. I just
- 12:14Speaker 3: I look at Drake May and I see the mobility
- 12:17Speaker 3: to run some of these bootleg actions. I see the
- 12:19Speaker 3: arm strength to push the ball down the field that
- 12:21Speaker 3: they want in this offense. You know a lot of
- 12:24Speaker 3: Joe Flacco's throws were vertical throws. He threw the ball
- 12:27Speaker 3: down the field on vertical players a ton, and so
- 12:30Speaker 3: that's that's something that they need to do. And you
- 12:32Speaker 3: look at this offense and you look at the splits
- 12:35Speaker 3: with Flacco with Watson. Flacco off his couch was better
- 12:39Speaker 3: than Deshaun Watson was in this offense, which is crazy
- 12:42Speaker 3: to think about, but that was the reality for Cleveland.
- 12:45Speaker 3: And so that type of quarterback, big arm, a little
- 12:48Speaker 3: bit nimble to get out of the pocket on the bootlegs,
- 12:51Speaker 3: sell play action fakes, that sort of thing. That's that's
- 12:54Speaker 3: the guy. That's the guy that fits this up.
- 12:55Speaker 5: On how much does it cost to go from two
- 12:57Speaker 5: to three? I mean from three to.
- 12:59Speaker 3: Two depends on what's for sale, Like if you have
- 13:02Speaker 3: other teams that also want Drake May, then it becomes
- 13:06Speaker 3: a bidding war, and then it can be a lot.
- 13:08Speaker 3: Some years it's not that much. It depends on what's
- 13:11Speaker 3: for sale.
- 13:13Speaker 5: Okay, all right, Now, I also heard that Van Pelt
- 13:18Speaker 5: has connections with Callahan, who is a renowned offensive.
- 13:22Speaker 3: So he's going to Tennessee. But yeah, so he That's
- 13:28Speaker 3: a big part of it too, is that Bill Callahan
- 13:31Speaker 3: is like Dante Scarneki a level, right, So how much
- 13:34Speaker 3: of their run game success and their blocking success was
- 13:38Speaker 3: due to both talent on the offensive line and the
- 13:40Speaker 3: fact that they had like a scar coaching the offensive line.
- 13:43Speaker 3: So that's why it's a really I know, Andy Dickerson,
- 13:46Speaker 3: they've they're really interested in. According to Reese, who's with
- 13:49Speaker 3: the Seahawks, been with the Rams a little bit like that,
- 13:52Speaker 3: that's a really important hire, is offensive line coach if
- 13:55Speaker 3: this is what they're gonna be.
- 13:56Speaker 1: So he was here.
- 13:58Speaker 5: I think it's important anyway. I don't care who is
- 14:01Speaker 5: the OC. They need good coaching for the offense.
- 14:04Speaker 1: And I'm encouraged, Like we you and I talked on
- 14:07Speaker 1: Thursday and unfiltered Fred and I kind of felt like
- 14:09Speaker 1: it was going to be Clem. I'm encouraged by the
- 14:11Speaker 1: fact that that report was out there, that Mike threw
- 14:13Speaker 1: out there about Andy Dickerson, not necessarily because of him
- 14:17Speaker 1: because he was here. I don't I don't, you know,
- 14:19Speaker 1: but just that they're looking Yeah, I thought they were
- 14:21Speaker 1: sort of married to Clem. I like the fact that
- 14:23Speaker 1: they're saying, well, we have Clem if we want them,
- 14:25Speaker 1: but what are other options. I like the fact that
- 14:29Speaker 1: you explore a little bit.
- 14:30Speaker 6: Yeah, yeah, now it's it's coming together. I mean, should
- 14:33Speaker 6: we talk about the other two guys too?
- 14:34Speaker 7: Are we already down there?
- 14:35Speaker 4: Well?
- 14:35Speaker 5: Yeah, we can, you know.
- 14:37Speaker 7: I mean it's just how it's all come together.
- 14:38Speaker 1: Yeah, the other two guys too, and the rest.
- 14:41Speaker 6: But now, I just you know, with Belichick and Steve
- 14:43Speaker 6: Belichick interviewing with with Jetfish and stuff, I mean, I
- 14:45Speaker 6: think it offers, you know, maybe a little bit more
- 14:47Speaker 6: clarity of what direction that's going. So you know, I'm
- 14:50Speaker 6: just I'm curious because as we're starting to get in
- 14:52Speaker 6: the draft stuff. And of course Evan, I mean he
- 14:53Speaker 6: just came back from the Senior Bowl.
- 14:54Speaker 7: He was in Alabama yesterday.
- 14:56Speaker 6: You know, it's it's now, it's it gives you a
- 14:58Speaker 6: sense of what kind of play am I looking for. I mean,
- 15:01Speaker 6: he talked about Drake may where you know yesterday it's
- 15:03Speaker 6: and even with Evan's piece with mac Grow where you know,
- 15:06Speaker 6: with the uncertainty of who your coordinators are going to be,
- 15:09Speaker 6: how do you how do you how do you scout
- 15:10Speaker 6: these guys? So plug for Evan, gonna go read what
- 15:13Speaker 6: Macro had to say. But now I think you're starting
- 15:16Speaker 6: to get a little bit of clarity, and you know
- 15:18Speaker 6: it's it's I like that the continuity's going to remain
- 15:21Speaker 6: on the defensive side of the ball now that you
- 15:23Speaker 6: know we have that that part of its set.
- 15:24Speaker 7: I think Covington will do a good job.
- 15:26Speaker 5: Yeah.
- 15:26Speaker 3: A big part of the next couple of weeks before
- 15:28Speaker 3: the combine is Macro, Cameron Williams, Elliott Wolf getting with
- 15:33Speaker 3: Alex van Pelt and saying what do you need, like,
- 15:35Speaker 3: what kind of players do you need to fit this offense?
- 15:38Speaker 3: Because you know, this is who we have the list
- 15:41Speaker 3: of guys that we feel like fit what you want
- 15:43Speaker 3: to do. And that's what they told me was that
- 15:46Speaker 3: we have guys that we feel like fit in a
- 15:48Speaker 3: man blocking scheme, we have guys that fit zone, we
- 15:50Speaker 3: have guys that fit spread under center, whatever. And then
- 15:53Speaker 3: we get with the coach and then we say, what
- 15:55Speaker 3: do you want? These are the ten guys that we
- 15:57Speaker 3: think fit that mold. And I that that's what the
- 16:00Speaker 3: next couple of weeks will be about going into Indy
- 16:03Speaker 3: so that they can start to put together their interview
- 16:05Speaker 3: list and do all that.
- 16:07Speaker 6: I think one other interesting thing too, just to t
- 16:09Speaker 6: Evan Up was talking about mac Jones in this offense and.
- 16:12Speaker 3: Oh yeah, no, no, yeah, no. I mean you talking
- 16:16Speaker 3: about a guy that he needs to get outside the pocket,
- 16:20Speaker 3: needs to throw the ball down the field vertically. No,
- 16:23Speaker 3: but I think that you look at the places that
- 16:26Speaker 3: you need. They need a quarterback no matter what we know,
- 16:30Speaker 3: that offensive line now becomes I think an even bigger
- 16:33Speaker 3: need than it maybe even was already a major need before.
- 16:37Speaker 3: And that explosive David and Joku type tight end is
- 16:41Speaker 3: also I think a big part of what Cleveland has
- 16:44Speaker 3: been able to do recently. It's probably too rich to
- 16:48Speaker 3: take it in the first round with brock Bauers, but
- 16:50Speaker 3: like a guy like Jatavian Sanders from Texas that's built
- 16:53Speaker 3: a lot like in Djoku, you know, just watching their
- 16:56Speaker 3: film over the last twenty four hours since the high
- 17:01Speaker 3: David and Joku was a massive part of that offense
- 17:04Speaker 3: last year, and his ability to stretch the field vertically
- 17:07Speaker 3: off of all that run action was a huge part
- 17:10Speaker 3: of why they hit so many big plays with Joe
- 17:11Speaker 3: Flacco at quarterback. And he's he's a really really good
- 17:14Speaker 3: tight end, and I think that that's something that now
- 17:16Speaker 3: becomes a big need.
- 17:17Speaker 1: Good athlete the last half of the year. He took
- 17:20Speaker 1: it to a different level in Joku, and that is
- 17:23Speaker 1: coinciding with Flacco.
- 17:26Speaker 3: Everybody was speaking of Flacco. He is a free agent.
- 17:33Speaker 3: I'm just saying Flacco. Jacoby Brissette was there the year
- 17:36Speaker 3: before with Van Pelt. Like those guys now as bridge
- 17:40Speaker 3: backup quarterbacks are totally in play, I would think retirement.
- 17:45Speaker 5: Is there any chance, you know now that the Patriots
- 17:49Speaker 5: don't pick a quarterback with their selection?
- 17:53Speaker 7: I think so. I mean, Evan laid it out.
- 17:55Speaker 1: I mean there's always a chance if they don't, But
- 17:57Speaker 1: I think they will.
- 17:58Speaker 6: I mean, are you saying in the like just generally
- 18:00Speaker 6: seven rounds, no quarterback?
- 18:02Speaker 1: Oh no, no, no, at three you're saying that threat three. Yeah,
- 18:05Speaker 1: I think they will.
- 18:06Speaker 5: But is there any chance that they don't pick a
- 18:08Speaker 5: quarterback and they don't pick Marvin Harrison?
- 18:10Speaker 3: Yes, I think that there's a really good chance that
- 18:13Speaker 3: they take one of these tackles three. I was when
- 18:15Speaker 3: I was at the Combine or the Combine, the Senior Bowl.
- 18:19Speaker 3: There's so many tackles in this class.
- 18:21Speaker 5: So then don't take one of three, so they don't
- 18:23Speaker 5: have my sheet.
- 18:24Speaker 3: Then there's a chance. I think that you can take
- 18:26Speaker 3: a tackle in the beginning of the second round at
- 18:28Speaker 3: thirty four, let's say, and take them. But if you
- 18:31Speaker 3: start to talk about scheme fit at quarterback, if you're
- 18:34Speaker 3: not getting Drake May and you really don't think you're
- 18:37Speaker 3: you're my thinking and don't think that the other two
- 18:40Speaker 3: guys are fits in this type of offense, then some
- 18:42Speaker 3: of the guys that maybe be available a little bit
- 18:45Speaker 3: later in the draft might be better fits, like JJ McCarthy,
- 18:49Speaker 3: Michael Pennix, Bo Nicks. You know, those types of guys
- 18:52Speaker 3: might be better off in this type of offense than
- 18:54Speaker 3: somebody like Jayden Daniels.
- 18:56Speaker 5: If Alex Van Pelt was sitting here right now, would
- 18:59Speaker 5: he say, wait a minute, just because this is the
- 19:01Speaker 5: offense that we ran doesn't mean I can't run another offense.
- 19:05Speaker 3: Well, Cleveland didn't think he could. Yeah, but I'm not
- 19:08Speaker 3: I'm not disagreeing with you, but there.
- 19:11Speaker 1: And I also think that in general terms, and I
- 19:13Speaker 1: get what Evan's talking about with Deshaun Watson and Flacco,
- 19:17Speaker 1: but I I also think that it was getting better
- 19:20Speaker 1: with Watson when he got hurt. And if Cleveland thought
- 19:25Speaker 1: that those guys wouldn't be able to do it. I mean,
- 19:27Speaker 1: you look at their quarterback death chart. What did they have?
- 19:31Speaker 1: They had Watson, they had a rookie in dt R,
- 19:34Speaker 1: and they had Matisse's guy, Jay Walker, who's the PJ
- 19:42Speaker 1: PJ Walker. Jay Walker is the college analyst. I just
- 19:47Speaker 1: pulled a fred So I don't think any of those
- 19:50Speaker 1: three would be considered that kind of Flacco. You know,
- 19:53Speaker 1: misdirection under center, got their spread. They're spread guys that
- 19:56Speaker 1: want to, you know, make plays with their legs and stuff.
- 19:59Speaker 1: So cle One didn't necessarily think that that offense couldn't
- 20:02Speaker 1: work with a different kind of quarterback. So I don't
- 20:05Speaker 1: dismiss it that you can make some adjustments to your
- 20:08Speaker 1: scheme and figure out how to be successful. I think
- 20:11Speaker 1: they lost so much personnel Cleveland last year they had
- 20:15Speaker 1: to find something, some kind of a niche that they
- 20:17Speaker 1: could be successful with and to turn out to be flaccoah,
- 20:20Speaker 1: you know, throwing play actions.
- 20:21Speaker 5: I'd hate to be a coordinator in this league defense
- 20:23Speaker 5: or offense and be pegged as this is what I do,
- 20:27Speaker 5: and this is only what I do.
- 20:28Speaker 1: You know, Yeah, I mean that's I wouldn't mind it
- 20:30Speaker 1: if I did it.
- 20:31Speaker 5: Well, yeah, well that's a good point.
- 20:32Speaker 6: But everybody's got their thing right that they believe in
- 20:34Speaker 6: and what they've come up and how they've learned it,
- 20:36Speaker 6: you know, And that's and that's I mean.
- 20:37Speaker 5: You can't but like work pretty well from mcvehish and
- 20:40Speaker 5: all of a sudden you're on a team with Caleb Williams.
- 20:42Speaker 5: Maybe you need to believe in something else.
- 20:43Speaker 1: Yeah, you know what I'm saying.
- 20:44Speaker 7: Yeah, of course, yeah, And you got to evolve.
- 20:45Speaker 6: And I mean I think that's probably what's going on
- 20:48Speaker 6: now with Mayo and him and you know, and and
- 20:50Speaker 6: grow and and you know, they're all coming together and
- 20:52Speaker 6: trying to figure out what what is this offense going
- 20:54Speaker 6: to be because I mean, it's not going to be
- 20:56Speaker 6: just he's going to come in and just run his offense.
- 20:58Speaker 6: I mean, I think they're going to have to have
- 20:59Speaker 6: some input from the coaches, some collaboration.
- 21:03Speaker 1: That's my point though about the personnel, fred I would
- 21:06Speaker 1: hate to be a coordinator that said, no, I don't
- 21:09Speaker 1: want Caleb Williams. He doesn't fit my system.
- 21:12Speaker 5: Right.
- 21:12Speaker 1: You have a bad system if you can't adapt it
- 21:14Speaker 1: to the guy who has the most talents coming out
- 21:16Speaker 1: of come on out of college, you know, I know,
- 21:20Speaker 1: Patrick mahomes will not work and this, I mean, that's stupid.
- 21:24Speaker 1: I wouldn't want to be pigeonholed like that. But if
- 21:26Speaker 1: I have a system that works and good players can
- 21:30Speaker 1: adapt to my system, like like I said, McVeigh and
- 21:34Speaker 1: Shanahan have very specific you know, it's it's very similar
- 21:38Speaker 1: that you know, it's kind of the same offense, just
- 21:40Speaker 1: out of like different personnel groups, right, you know, like
- 21:44Speaker 1: like the Rams use a lot of three receiver Yeah,
- 21:47Speaker 1: I was, you know, less full back when just watching
- 21:50Speaker 1: it since last night, I would say that this Brown's
- 21:53Speaker 1: offense mimics more like what the Lions are doing in
- 21:56Speaker 1: Detroit than what the Shanahan tree is doing.
- 21:59Speaker 3: Okay, because of how much power scheme they run. They
- 22:03Speaker 3: run a lot more counter trap you know, tackle wrap duo.
- 22:09Speaker 3: Like it's not as much of the wide zone stuff
- 22:12Speaker 3: as it was a couple of years ago with Stefanski.
- 22:15Speaker 3: But you can adapt it to Jaden Daniels. I just
- 22:18Speaker 3: think that now you're adapting it, right, and now they're
- 22:22Speaker 3: kind of outside their comfort zone. The quarterback is the
- 22:24Speaker 3: coordinator is sort of learning a new thing as well.
- 22:27Speaker 3: I mean, the easiest way to adapt it is what
- 22:31Speaker 3: the Dolphins have done with Tua, which is running pistol
- 22:34Speaker 3: and you run all the same boot actions, but you're
- 22:37Speaker 3: running it out.
- 22:37Speaker 1: Of which is what they started to do with Watson
- 22:39Speaker 1: when he finally started to play well.
- 22:41Speaker 3: I would figure that as soon as that was a
- 22:45Speaker 3: big thing that McDaniel started to do when he got
- 22:47Speaker 3: to Miami, because Tua's doesn't love being under center. He's
- 22:50Speaker 3: a shorter quarterback. He doesn't love being under center, and
- 22:52Speaker 3: so they put him in the pistol. And now you
- 22:55Speaker 3: can still make the same bootleg stretch sort of action
- 22:59Speaker 3: and turn your back to the line of scrimmage, but
- 23:01Speaker 3: you're doing it from a more comfortable spot than than
- 23:04Speaker 3: under center for the quarterback. So maybe that it's as
- 23:06Speaker 3: simple as that, and and now you have a solution.
- 23:09Speaker 3: But it's a problem I'd love to have with Jayden daniels. I.
- 23:12Speaker 3: I just if you told me, like, who's the most
- 23:14Speaker 3: ideal quarterback to have in this offense, it's it's not
- 23:17Speaker 3: Jayden Daniels.
- 23:18Speaker 5: So I was listening to UH one of Paul's stations
- 23:21Speaker 5: last night and old friend Andy Hart was on with
- 23:27Speaker 5: Keith and Andy.
- 23:30Speaker 1: Hated hated, doesn't really.
- 23:34Speaker 5: He wanted he wanted Josh McDaniels.
- 23:36Speaker 1: Oh, I thought he wanted Nick Kayley wanted but he said,
- 23:42Speaker 1: I think that's his first choice.
- 23:43Speaker 5: But I think, you know, he would have rather have
- 23:46Speaker 5: Josh McDaniels than I don't want the.
- 23:48Speaker 7: Full to come back as.
- 23:51Speaker 1: They use a little bit of.
- 23:54Speaker 5: He hated this, and like you, I think it was
- 23:58Speaker 5: I think it was just a little bit nied. But listen,
- 24:01Speaker 5: I'm encouraged that they went out of their comfort zone
- 24:04Speaker 5: me too. You know, interviewed a lot of people, settled
- 24:07Speaker 5: out a guy who hasn't been here before, although he
- 24:10Speaker 5: does have the connection perhaps to Elliott Wolf. But that's great.
- 24:15Speaker 5: And it sounds like they're looking at other positioned coaches
- 24:19Speaker 5: as well on offense, which is you know double great.
- 24:22Speaker 6: Yeah, well, seems like the running back coaches coaching, you know,
- 24:24Speaker 6: is this interviewing with Washington too?
- 24:26Speaker 7: Right now?
- 24:26Speaker 6: So you know what's gonna happen with Troy Brown who
- 24:28Speaker 6: was down in the Senior Bowl.
- 24:29Speaker 7: Is he gonna you know, stick around?
- 24:30Speaker 6: So I mean it's I guess that's you know, as
- 24:32Speaker 6: Evan said, I think the offensive line coaches is a
- 24:34Speaker 6: big one coming up. Is there going to be a
- 24:36Speaker 6: quarterback coach maybe coming with him or is he going
- 24:38Speaker 6: to serve in that dual role. But that's you know,
- 24:41Speaker 6: we're kind of checking boxes going down the line right now.
- 24:44Speaker 5: But now that the that the coordinators are in place,
- 24:46Speaker 5: hopefully the other stuff will happen quick.
- 24:48Speaker 6: And is it going to be a big staff, you know,
- 24:50Speaker 6: Like that's what I'm wondering now, like they you know,
- 24:52Speaker 6: we're notoriously a small staff with Bill. Are they going
- 24:55Speaker 6: to get away from that? Are they going to try
- 24:56Speaker 6: to expand a little bit and bring more guy?
- 24:58Speaker 1: I think it'll look bigger because I think Mayo told
- 25:00Speaker 1: you that at his press commence that titles do matter
- 25:03Speaker 1: to him. So I don't think you're going to have
- 25:04Speaker 1: four or five guys behind the scenes doing stuff that
- 25:07Speaker 1: you don't know. I think there'll be someone, you know,
- 25:09Speaker 1: I don't know.
- 25:10Speaker 7: What it'll be coach wide receiver.
- 25:12Speaker 1: They'll have that like everybody else does, but control coach. Yes,
- 25:17Speaker 1: maybe they'll have those which that they never really they
- 25:20Speaker 1: just have like these random coaching assistants because they don't,
- 25:23Speaker 1: you know, because Bill never believed. Yeah, he never believed
- 25:26Speaker 1: in the titles.
- 25:27Speaker 3: And I think, yeah, I think you look at a
- 25:30Speaker 3: lot of the staffs around the league. That was like
- 25:32Speaker 3: quality control coaches or whatever. Some teams just call them
- 25:35Speaker 3: offensive defensive assistants that are just there to hand the handle,
- 25:39Speaker 3: like the spillage. You know, just what what's left over that,
- 25:42Speaker 3: you know, not all these guys and all that kind
- 25:47Speaker 3: of stuff when you start talking about all that kind
- 25:50Speaker 3: of stuff, like should the wide receiver coach really be
- 25:52Speaker 3: doing that or is there bigger things, you know, bigger
- 25:55Speaker 3: fish to fry for these position coaches?
- 25:57Speaker 5: At times you might know the seven is patting plays
- 26:02Speaker 5: something that the Patriots only do or do all teams do?
- 26:04Speaker 5: I think all teams do it, but they made it
- 26:06Speaker 5: like it was like something they invented.
- 26:08Speaker 3: It's a it's a massive Belichick thing.
- 26:10Speaker 1: Oh is it? It's amazing he spent in the length.
- 26:13Speaker 1: He's been gone for less than a month now.
- 26:14Speaker 5: But but you say all teams do it.
- 26:16Speaker 3: I'm sure all teams have some sort of system. But
- 26:20Speaker 3: Bill was notoriously picky too, Like if you had a
- 26:25Speaker 3: guy that you had him at the seven technique instead
- 26:29Speaker 3: of the nine technique, you're getting chewed out right, Like
- 26:32Speaker 3: it was like that detailed, and I think it was
- 26:35Speaker 3: this like the manner in which it was recorded, like
- 26:38Speaker 3: as technology improved, he wanted it done the same way.
- 26:43Speaker 3: According to some of those guys that, like I told you,
- 26:46Speaker 3: I used to you know, that was one of the
- 26:47Speaker 3: original features I did. Was with Josh and Brian Dable
- 26:51Speaker 3: when they were doing that right, and you know, we're like,
- 26:55Speaker 3: we try to tell him, like, you know, there's there's
- 26:57Speaker 3: more like computerized weight.
- 26:58Speaker 1: No, he wanted it. I haven't just said by hand
- 27:02Speaker 1: and exact Yeah, but I love I loved though, like
- 27:07Speaker 1: say like that they like invent everything.
- 27:09Speaker 5: Oh now we can say that. I guess obviously, padding
- 27:12Speaker 5: plays it makes you kind of learn because you're down
- 27:14Speaker 5: in the weeds. But there are electronic ways to do
- 27:16Speaker 5: it a lot faster.
- 27:17Speaker 1: I would think, Yeah, now I don't know how they
- 27:19Speaker 1: do it now. That was that was quite a while ago,
- 27:21Speaker 1: but I know that Bill was sort of that it
- 27:24Speaker 1: needed to be.
- 27:25Speaker 5: He had one of our videos that had I forget
- 27:29Speaker 5: who it was one of the older coaches that came
- 27:33Speaker 5: decided to become a coach at like forty or something
- 27:36Speaker 5: like that. It was a big discussion with his wife,
- 27:38Speaker 5: forget his name. We did a do your Job on
- 27:39Speaker 5: him and he was talking about Patting plays. Who was
- 27:43Speaker 5: that guy just last year? I think we did it
- 27:46Speaker 5: just last year. Yeah, one of our coaches that he
- 27:50Speaker 5: decided to become a scout or you know, at an
- 27:53Speaker 5: older age. No, no, no, this hope for you. No,
- 27:58Speaker 5: I'll have to It was a it was a you know,
- 28:01Speaker 5: a mini do your job about this guy. Oh no,
- 28:03Speaker 5: he might have been part of a bigger one. He was.
- 28:06Speaker 5: He was part of the scouting And there was a
- 28:08Speaker 5: segment about this guy who you know, made this decision
- 28:12Speaker 5: that I want to do this. I'm gonna have to
- 28:14Speaker 5: make sacrifices. I talked to my wife, We're gonna have
- 28:17Speaker 5: to downsize, but this is what I really want to do.
- 28:21Speaker 6: You don't call his name acall all right?
- 28:23Speaker 1: Not recall all right? Doesn't.
- 28:26Speaker 5: I'm sure one of our listeners will will educate me
- 28:28Speaker 5: on our own content. All right. Eight five five PATS
- 28:31Speaker 5: five hundred is our ace ticket hotline web radio at
- 28:34Speaker 5: pages dot COM's the email address. The phone lines are stacked,
- 28:37Speaker 5: emails are coming in. Wow, so uh yeah.
- 28:41Speaker 7: They are stacked.
- 28:42Speaker 6: I thought that they were empty, but they're actually completely full.
- 28:46Speaker 5: So let's start with Arthur in New York. What's up, Arthur?
- 28:50Speaker 4: Hey, how's it going. Fred told me to call back,
- 28:53Speaker 4: So I had a couple of things I wanted to say.
- 28:55Speaker 4: The first thing was actually to Evan though, when he
- 28:58Speaker 4: was talking about this offense under Van Pelt has Drake
- 29:02Speaker 4: May written.
- 29:02Speaker 5: All over it.
- 29:03Speaker 4: It fits him like a glove. This screams Drake May.
- 29:06Speaker 4: We got to run the card to the to the
- 29:08Speaker 4: pedestal or whatever it's called.
- 29:10Speaker 3: Well, my question is.
- 29:11Speaker 4: He spent more time odium thank you, He spent more
- 29:15Speaker 4: time in the Green Bay organization than he did in Cleveland.
- 29:19Speaker 4: So to assume that everything he's learned is just this
- 29:21Speaker 4: Thefanski offense, I don't think that we know that. And
- 29:24Speaker 4: also he spent more time in the Buffalo organizations than
- 29:27Speaker 4: he did in you know, Cleveland as well, and he
- 29:29Speaker 4: spent time in Tampa Bay and Cincinnati. And if we're
- 29:31Speaker 4: hiring a new OC, we got to hope that this
- 29:33Speaker 4: guy has his own bright ideas and then he's his
- 29:35Speaker 4: own mastermind, and that it's not just a copy and
- 29:37Speaker 4: paste the Fanski offense. But like you know, he's just
- 29:40Speaker 4: some sort of offensive genius like a Ben Johnson or
- 29:43Speaker 4: a Sean McVay or one of those.
- 29:44Speaker 3: Guys, you know, when you guys that run similar offenses.
- 29:48Speaker 4: But like, so I'm saying, how do we know that?
- 29:51Speaker 4: We just got to go get Drake May and he's
- 29:52Speaker 4: the ideal fit and it's not you know, Jayden Daniels
- 29:55Speaker 4: could be a better fit because we don't really actually
- 29:57Speaker 4: know what Alex van Pelts all about. He's been in
- 30:00Speaker 4: five six different organizations, learning under five six different coaching staff.
- 30:03Speaker 3: It's a fair point. I just I'm going off of
- 30:05Speaker 3: what I know, what we know, and what's the most
- 30:07Speaker 3: recent I mean, I don't know what I'm supposed to
- 30:10Speaker 3: do other than that, I can't. If you want to
- 30:12Speaker 3: go back ten years and look at his offense in
- 30:14Speaker 3: Green Bay, then we can do that, But it's what
- 30:18Speaker 3: has he been doing recently? What is his mo Mike
- 30:22Speaker 3: McCarthy also runs a more West Coast based system that's
- 30:26Speaker 3: similar to this, So that's what they're doing in Dallas
- 30:29Speaker 3: right now. So like, look, I every scheme can be
- 30:33Speaker 3: adapted to everybody can fit everything to an extent. But
- 30:36Speaker 3: I'm just telling you what I think, and that is
- 30:38Speaker 3: that if you had to pick a quarterback out of
- 30:40Speaker 3: this class that fits what they do the best, it
- 30:43Speaker 3: would be Drake Made Does that mean that Jaden Daniels
- 30:45Speaker 3: would fail in this system automatically, No, of course not.
- 30:48Speaker 5: Well you adapt the system a little bit to him.
- 30:50Speaker 1: Right, Yeah, And I would agree, Arthur, just that you
- 30:55Speaker 1: would more likely go to what a guy has been
- 30:57Speaker 1: doing most recently. You know, I know he's been in
- 31:00Speaker 1: a lot of systems, but I'm not really sure what
- 31:03Speaker 1: the buffalo from But you know, let me tell you
- 31:06Speaker 1: about twenty years ago would have to do with what
- 31:08Speaker 1: he's going to do now.
- 31:10Speaker 4: That was the one time he actually did a call plays. Yeah,
- 31:13Speaker 4: it was Ryan Fitzpatrick, who is the quarterback who's the
- 31:15Speaker 4: opposite of West Coast. Ryan Fitzpatrick's gunslinger. Let's throw it,
- 31:18Speaker 4: let's go.
- 31:18Speaker 1: Crazy, right, and he hasn't done that in fifteen years,
- 31:21Speaker 1: So what does that tell you about his mentality?
- 31:23Speaker 4: But he's learned in four different other offenses, So to
- 31:26Speaker 4: just assume that it's the fanski I think is yeah, No.
- 31:29Speaker 1: You're right, definitely, You're right. We won't we don't want
- 31:32Speaker 1: to just assume. But I'm just asking what do you
- 31:34Speaker 1: think is most likely that he wants to be a
- 31:36Speaker 1: gunslinger throwing it all over the place, or he likes
- 31:39Speaker 1: this kind of a system that he's been in the
- 31:41Speaker 1: last four years.
- 31:43Speaker 4: Most likely is that a guy like Evan is an
- 31:46Speaker 4: up and coming reporter and until he sits down with
- 31:48Speaker 4: Alex van Felt and has a conversation that we don't know.
- 31:51Speaker 1: So you know, that's something I want to I want
- 31:54Speaker 1: to embrace the like the conflict. But he's just so snarky, like.
- 31:59Speaker 5: All right, thanks, Arthur.
- 32:00Speaker 3: He's a Jaden Daniels guy, if I remember.
- 32:02Speaker 1: Yeah, oh yeah, he yelled at me yesterday for suggesting
- 32:06Speaker 1: that Jayden Daniels is a little bit of a project
- 32:08Speaker 1: in terms of a passer.
- 32:09Speaker 3: How dare you? But no, I understand what he's saying,
- 32:13Speaker 3: And no one's saying that Alex van Pelt doesn't have
- 32:15Speaker 3: the chops to like switch his offense or in a
- 32:17Speaker 3: Jaden Daniels. But I'm still saying that if they had
- 32:21Speaker 3: the choice, and they had the number one pick in
- 32:23Speaker 3: the draft, and they could choose any quarterback, and they
- 32:25Speaker 3: told me that this is this is your coordinator, I
- 32:28Speaker 3: would think that this would be the way that he
- 32:29Speaker 3: would gravitate towards. That's all.
- 32:31Speaker 1: And I'm also not saying that Jaden Daniels shouldn't be
- 32:33Speaker 1: taken because this guy's system is different. I would say,
- 32:36Speaker 1: adapt your system to Jayden Daniels. If you think Daniels
- 32:39Speaker 1: is worth that pick, well.
- 32:40Speaker 5: Hopefully we'll have Jerrad on the show at some point.
- 32:42Speaker 1: And you keep promising that.
- 32:44Speaker 5: Yeah. One of the questions that I want to ask
- 32:47Speaker 5: is with these coordinators, what's the one or two things
- 32:49Speaker 5: about each guy that convinced you that they're the guy?
- 32:53Speaker 5: You know? And when he gets Alex van Pelt, I
- 32:54Speaker 5: wonder what that is, you know, because obviously they must
- 32:57Speaker 5: have talked about kind of offense. Are you most comfortable
- 33:00Speaker 5: with what players? You know, blah blah blah. And then
- 33:03Speaker 5: at some point maybe they said to him, here's our
- 33:05Speaker 5: board or you know, I guess, and here's the quarterback
- 33:10Speaker 5: that we think we want to take. What do you
- 33:12Speaker 5: think about that? You know?
- 33:14Speaker 3: Yeah, I look, I have to go by what they
- 33:17Speaker 3: told me. I don't know how much of it was
- 33:18Speaker 3: lip servers or not. But Macro and Cam Williams insisted
- 33:22Speaker 3: that there is no board yet because you still because
- 33:26Speaker 3: you still have Senis Moore to go far enough in
- 33:28Speaker 3: terms of interviews, combine measurables, you know, testing numbers. Obviously
- 33:33Speaker 3: they have a film grade on everybody right?
- 33:35Speaker 1: Would you ask when the board is done if they
- 33:37Speaker 1: could forward that.
- 33:39Speaker 3: I asked for the PDP. They turned me to just
- 33:43Speaker 3: go and take a picture of it, but I yeah that.
- 33:45Speaker 3: So a lot of this I think is to to
- 33:48Speaker 3: be determined of what they you know, A big part
- 33:51Speaker 3: of it is leadership. Obviously it's a leadership position, so
- 33:54Speaker 3: a big part of it is mental makeup and leadership
- 33:56Speaker 3: and all that kind of stuff. But it's also football.
- 33:59Speaker 3: Iq Ski even fit all that stuff too, So there's
- 34:01Speaker 3: a long way to go.
- 34:02Speaker 5: Let's go to Zach in Pennsylvania. What's up, Zach?
- 34:07Speaker 8: Hey, guys, how you doing good? Hey?
- 34:10Speaker 5: Good?
- 34:11Speaker 8: First of all, just first time caller, and I was
- 34:14Speaker 8: a little bummed yesterday when we heard the news break
- 34:16Speaker 8: two hours after last week's show, So I'm really happy
- 34:19Speaker 8: to hear that we're also doing an emergency pod today,
- 34:21Speaker 8: But just wanted to give my first main takeaways about
- 34:25Speaker 8: Van Pelt would mainly just be his experience with the quarterbacks.
- 34:28Speaker 8: I think it's huge and fourth them in his actual
- 34:31Speaker 8: play calling experience. I'm willing to look past that just
- 34:34Speaker 8: because he's also been an assistant for so long in
- 34:37Speaker 8: the NFL. That those two things together just give me
- 34:40Speaker 8: some relief and some optimism. Optimism that no matter what
- 34:43Speaker 8: we do at quarterback, whether it's a bridge guy or
- 34:46Speaker 8: in the draft, that like, we're going to have someone
- 34:47Speaker 8: who can can handle a quarterback maybe from start to finish,
- 34:50Speaker 8: or just get someone up to speed fast enough to
- 34:53Speaker 8: maybe move this along a little faster than maybe what
- 34:56Speaker 8: we were thinking two days ago. But my main question
- 34:59Speaker 8: for the group just done and then I'll take it
- 35:01Speaker 8: off the air, is you know, even yesterday we interviewed
- 35:05Speaker 8: twelve people and you know, with a list was dwindling
- 35:08Speaker 8: and kind of wasn't feeling so great about who was
- 35:11Speaker 8: left on the board. And then all of a sudden, this,
- 35:13Speaker 8: you know, Van Pelt guy comes out of nowhere, and
- 35:16Speaker 8: we hear about all this experience and how well respected
- 35:18Speaker 8: he is. So just thinking about how we were feeling yesterday,
- 35:21Speaker 8: and you know this the excitement that we have about
- 35:24Speaker 8: him today Van Telt coming like looking at that list
- 35:27Speaker 8: and Van felt like, do we think that this is
- 35:29Speaker 8: maybe the best that we could have gotten given the
- 35:32Speaker 8: situation just yesterday? It seems like a really good hire
- 35:35Speaker 8: and kind of excited to see what he does and
- 35:37Speaker 8: compared to the guys left on the board, like Kyley
- 35:39Speaker 8: and maybe this Angstrand guy, like even the San fran guys,
- 35:44Speaker 8: kind of looking forward to seeing what he can do.
- 35:46Speaker 8: So what are your thoughts on that?
- 35:47Speaker 5: Well, I think, you know, that's it's a tough question
- 35:50Speaker 5: to answer. It's just the best they could have done.
- 35:52Speaker 5: You know, maybe they could have thrown all the money
- 35:55Speaker 5: in the world and Ben Johnson would leave an lateral move.
- 35:58Speaker 5: You know, I don't know. Could they have done better? Maybe,
- 36:01Speaker 5: But what I like about Van Pelt is he's actually
- 36:04Speaker 5: worked with quarterbacks before, you know, and we talked about,
- 36:09Speaker 5: you know, you're gonna have, you know, hopefully a rookie
- 36:12Speaker 5: quarterback that's going to have to be nurtured and brought up,
- 36:16Speaker 5: and it's not enough to have just been in oc
- 36:19Speaker 5: you know, you have to have worked with quarterbacks. And
- 36:22Speaker 5: we talked about experience. There's not a lot of experience
- 36:25Speaker 5: on this staff. This guy has it. He's been around
- 36:28Speaker 5: the block.
- 36:29Speaker 1: I think it's similar with a lot of the different
- 36:31Speaker 1: kid But those are the things that I put on
- 36:33Speaker 1: the plus side for Van Pelt. Yeah, now I would
- 36:35Speaker 1: put other things on the plus side of some of
- 36:37Speaker 1: the younger guys.
- 36:38Speaker 5: Just out of curiosity that tight pants.
- 36:40Speaker 1: Well, I wanted a tight pants guy. We got literally
- 36:42Speaker 1: the only one that doesn't wear tight pants. What would
- 36:46Speaker 1: you guys have thought if it was like a Kingsbury
- 36:49Speaker 1: or Frank.
- 36:50Speaker 7: Reich, I would have.
- 36:51Speaker 1: Been someone like that. A lot of experience. So I
- 36:56Speaker 1: like to say it was like the best they could
- 36:58Speaker 1: have done. I kind of do with you, Fred, It's
- 37:00Speaker 1: a hard question to answer. Yeah, I did like the
- 37:02Speaker 1: idea of like the Detroit guy Engstrom and he worked
- 37:07Speaker 1: with quarterbacks, and I thought it was all signs were
- 37:10Speaker 1: pointing to it. He was going to get that coordinator
- 37:13Speaker 1: job if Ben Johnson went to Washington. Obviously that didn't
- 37:17Speaker 1: work out. And I'm not telling you I would I
- 37:19Speaker 1: would feel better if it was him. I'm just saying
- 37:21Speaker 1: it would be different, you know, similar but different.
- 37:24Speaker 6: They all kind of have those I mean, all that
- 37:26Speaker 6: group of that, the guys that they interviewed, they all
- 37:28Speaker 6: were Kayley like, they all had some of these warts
- 37:30Speaker 6: of you know, and I mean I think what appeals
- 37:32Speaker 6: to me like with Kaylee was just like he was
- 37:34Speaker 6: not here for one year, Like how much Jiff different offense?
- 37:37Speaker 5: Right, And that's why I really interesting to hear from Mayo.
- 37:40Speaker 5: What's the one thing about Alex van Pelt that said, okay,
- 37:43Speaker 5: he's my guy? Yeah, Like, what was it? Yeah?
- 37:46Speaker 3: I think you look at it what the bands have
- 37:48Speaker 3: done recently. I kind of agree with you.
- 37:55Speaker 5: I was just joking.
- 37:56Speaker 6: I mean, let's speak about six fifteen hours.
- 37:59Speaker 5: Absolutely, yeah, I'll take it. Free coffee for life, I'll
- 38:03Speaker 5: take it.
- 38:04Speaker 3: I mean, Kingsbury, you mentioned who I love.
- 38:08Speaker 1: I know you were high.
- 38:10Speaker 5: I remember that coming here, Kaylee.
- 38:12Speaker 3: I think there's a story there that we're not gonna tell,
- 38:14Speaker 3: but there's there's something going on there. I think the
- 38:20Speaker 3: biggest thing is is that those guys come from systems
- 38:22Speaker 3: that use a lot more of like the modern tricks
- 38:24Speaker 3: like motion and things like that. So, second to last
- 38:28Speaker 3: team in the league last year in motion rate, the
- 38:31Speaker 3: Cleveland Browns.
- 38:33Speaker 1: How long are we hiding that from? Now?
- 38:35Speaker 5: We got another year?
- 38:36Speaker 3: You mopen the Cleveland Browns. I can't take this now,
- 38:40Speaker 3: I will say. I'll give him credit, he posted on
- 38:42Speaker 3: our po so's the motion that they do use is
- 38:47Speaker 3: well thought out motion. But they they're not like the
- 38:50Speaker 3: Niners tree or they're not They're not just running motion
- 38:53Speaker 3: on every single motion. Right, So they don't do they
- 38:56Speaker 3: don't do motion.
- 38:57Speaker 5: Uh.
- 38:57Speaker 3: They're not a they're not a big they run a
- 39:01Speaker 3: lot of eleven personnel. But they do love their jumbo
- 39:04Speaker 3: packages like they love they love to tight end.
- 39:07Speaker 5: Uh.
- 39:07Speaker 3: They love having alignment eligible who is actually listed on
- 39:11Speaker 3: the roster as a full back slash center. So a
- 39:15Speaker 3: guy named Nick Harris who is actually a free agent. Uh,
- 39:18Speaker 3: so he could go get him, he could be here. Uh.
- 39:21Speaker 3: He he plays like a jumbo package type of role
- 39:24Speaker 3: for their offense. So they're they're heavy group, you know,
- 39:28Speaker 3: heavy group, heavy personnel group for the most part, you know,
- 39:32Speaker 3: and especially their base offense. And and they're a stagnant group,
- 39:35Speaker 3: which i is what the Patriots were with McDaniels and
- 39:39Speaker 3: O'Brien and like that. That's it's not a it's not
- 39:42Speaker 3: this like Mike McDaniel. There's one guy going this way,
- 39:45Speaker 3: one guy going that way, and blockers blocking from odd
- 39:48Speaker 3: angles and stuff like that. It's not as much of that.
- 39:51Speaker 1: Yeah, And just so people know my little comment about
- 39:55Speaker 1: the full million that yesterday on one of my stations, Fred,
- 39:59Speaker 1: they threw out the there was evidently according to Jimmy's
- 40:04Speaker 1: phone on Felger and maz he was looking for. Nick
- 40:08Speaker 1: Cayley was looking for four million dollars, to which I said,
- 40:11Speaker 1: peace out, bro Like first time coordinator ever, never even
- 40:17Speaker 1: coach quarterbacks, let alone coordinated an offense, and he's looking
- 40:20Speaker 1: for more money than like Bill O'Brien was making.
- 40:23Speaker 5: Yeah, well I heard, didn't Jimmy say a lot of
- 40:27Speaker 5: it had to do with moving, Like he wanted to
- 40:30Speaker 5: stay in the West Coast, but in order to decide
- 40:32Speaker 5: to move, like that's what he needed Jimmy.
- 40:36Speaker 1: Jimmy likes Elaine h Jesse in Houston?
- 40:40Speaker 5: What's up Jesse? Jessey up.
- 40:50Speaker 1: Show?
- 40:50Speaker 9: And I won't take my head off just this.
- 40:55Speaker 1: It's a suggestion.
- 40:55Speaker 9: I guess if Night is the guy for this off
- 41:01Speaker 9: and they're not sold on Daniels and Williams isn't available,
- 41:06Speaker 9: so they try and traight up, they can't get it.
- 41:09Speaker 9: Are we looking at the possibility of another year Mac Jones?
- 41:14Speaker 9: And then you know, I mean, if Mac Jones is
- 41:16Speaker 9: as bad as everybody's saying years, then we're really picking
- 41:21Speaker 9: high again next year anyways, regardless if we take Marvin Harrison, Junior,
- 41:25Speaker 9: jaw whoever.
- 41:28Speaker 5: Yeah, Okay, so thanks Jef, you'll take that off the air.
- 41:31Speaker 3: It's a fair question. I really would be absolutely blown
- 41:35Speaker 3: away if Mac Jones is the quarterback of this team
- 41:37Speaker 3: next year, whether it's a bridge guy in free agency,
- 41:40Speaker 3: I think the one guy we really should be paying
- 41:42Speaker 3: attention to is Baker Mayfield. I think that if he's
- 41:46Speaker 3: somehow gets out of Tampa Bay or that turned sour,
- 41:49Speaker 3: that situation. Yeah, you know, Van Pelt was obviously with
- 41:53Speaker 3: him in Cleveland, so I would look at it.
- 41:56Speaker 5: It's kind of sad, you know, and you hate to
- 41:58Speaker 5: say this about anybody, but Mac's time up here I
- 42:03Speaker 5: think is done. And it's not even just about his
- 42:06Speaker 5: playing ability. I think that I don't want to call
- 42:10Speaker 5: him toxic, but there's a locker room you have to
- 42:13Speaker 5: worry about futurod Mayo and I don't have time. You can't.
- 42:19Speaker 5: I don't have time to be, you know, refereeing and
- 42:24Speaker 5: you know, talking for Matt say, hey, you know he's
- 42:26Speaker 5: a good you know, he's either he's either leading this
- 42:29Speaker 5: locker room or he's not. And I think that ship
- 42:32Speaker 5: has sailed. And I hate to say it, and I
- 42:35Speaker 5: hope Mac does well. Good kid, I wish him the best,
- 42:39Speaker 5: but I think his time here is done, and it
- 42:43Speaker 5: has probably less to do about his playing ability than
- 42:46Speaker 5: all the other stuff.
- 42:47Speaker 6: I agree so much, Fred, I've been thinking a lot
- 42:49Speaker 6: about that over the last couple of weeks. And you know,
- 42:51Speaker 6: there's always this little voice in the back of your
- 42:53Speaker 6: head of like Alex Van Peltz got a great reputation
- 42:56Speaker 6: with quarterbacks, you know, regardless of fit, Like you know,
- 42:59Speaker 6: could he possibly league?
- 43:00Speaker 7: You know, there's are some.
- 43:01Speaker 6: Skills that you still hear people say Mac Jones, you know,
- 43:04Speaker 6: if he gets But I'm with you. I think that's
- 43:06Speaker 6: what it comes down to. It's not even about the
- 43:08Speaker 6: on the field stuff. It's just a hard sell to
- 43:10Speaker 6: the defense. And you know, to Juwan Bentley and guys
- 43:13Speaker 6: like that, who have had two years of watching Mac
- 43:15Speaker 6: Jones turn the ball over consistently, doesn't really seem like
- 43:19Speaker 6: they love the way he presents himself to the team.
- 43:21Speaker 6: We talked about his leadership and you know, I'm gonna
- 43:23Speaker 6: run my race, and you know, I I on PC agree.
- 43:27Speaker 1: It's on field, off field, and I think if they
- 43:30Speaker 1: got stuck quote unquote, they don't like the guy at
- 43:34Speaker 1: three you know that, you know they, let's face it,
- 43:38Speaker 1: they have no control over the other two picks, right,
- 43:40Speaker 1: so if they don't like the third one that's left
- 43:42Speaker 1: for them and they couldn't move up to get the
- 43:44Speaker 1: one they wanted, and every option in free agency, because
- 43:48Speaker 1: I mean, I still think if that were to happen,
- 43:51Speaker 1: you get a bridge guy, like we'resett or something, a.
- 43:53Speaker 5: Bridge guy draft a quarterback in the fourth or fifth.
- 43:56Speaker 1: But if you get stuck and you don't have anybody,
- 44:00Speaker 1: I still am trading Mac Jones. Yeah, and I'll let
- 44:03Speaker 1: Bailey Zappy play like if I get stuck and I
- 44:06Speaker 1: have absolutely nobody. I don't think Zappi is as sort
- 44:09Speaker 1: of polarizing as Mac is right now in the locker room.
- 44:15Speaker 3: I still think that there's a very viable path. There's
- 44:18Speaker 3: gonna be some end of the first round, second round
- 44:20Speaker 3: quarterbacks in this class ye that have are going to
- 44:23Speaker 3: have starter grades, maybe not high end starter grades, but
- 44:26Speaker 3: are gonna have starter grades.
- 44:28Speaker 5: You know.
- 44:28Speaker 3: I think Michael Pennix is going to be a guy
- 44:30Speaker 3: that's going to go right in that twenty five to
- 44:33Speaker 3: thirty five range, probably end of the first round, just
- 44:36Speaker 3: to get the fifth year option. A bow Nicks, JJ McCarthy,
- 44:39Speaker 3: like those guys are going to be in that territory
- 44:42Speaker 3: that if you want to go Olofushanu Joel Marvin Harrison
- 44:47Speaker 3: at the top of the draft, you might have an
- 44:49Speaker 3: opportunity to get one of those.
- 44:50Speaker 5: Yeah, I say it in a very respectful way. You know,
- 44:53Speaker 5: Mac needs to go find his way somewhere.
- 44:56Speaker 6: Yeah, you know, it's hard to see it happening here.
- 44:58Speaker 6: And like, as much as you like can imagine a
- 45:01Speaker 6: world maybe where they just look at a blank slate,
- 45:03Speaker 6: but you got to compete. You're not not the starter.
- 45:06Speaker 6: And he goes out there and he plays well and
- 45:08Speaker 6: he starts, you know, he re earns people's respect. As
- 45:11Speaker 6: much as I want to sell that story to my
- 45:12Speaker 6: I can't buy it. I can't buy it.
- 45:14Speaker 5: It's more important. Will the remnants of last year buy it?
- 45:19Speaker 6: Yeah?
- 45:19Speaker 7: No, And that's the whole thing.
- 45:21Speaker 6: That's the whole thing is you know, I think it's
- 45:23Speaker 6: the last kind of vestige of what the problem was
- 45:26Speaker 6: last year. And yes, it wasn't all Max's fault, but
- 45:29Speaker 6: he was part of the problem too.
- 45:30Speaker 5: When it's time, Yeah, let's go to Matthew in Texas.
- 45:37Speaker 5: What's up, Matthew? Matthew and Texas, are you having us
- 45:44Speaker 5: on mute. No, Matthew, Matthew, he's there, but he just
- 45:49Speaker 5: won't speak. Okay, we'll go up to the top of
- 45:52Speaker 5: the stack to Dominic in New York. Hey, Dominic.
- 45:55Speaker 9: Hey.
- 45:57Speaker 6: Yeah.
- 45:58Speaker 10: So, you know, when I first started to Alexandill hiring,
- 46:02Speaker 10: and obviously, like many others, had no idea really what
- 46:05Speaker 10: he's done or what he did. But going to Zac's
- 46:07Speaker 10: point with him just being so good at quarterbacks, and
- 46:11Speaker 10: you know, Aaron Rodgers gave him, you know, a nice
- 46:14Speaker 10: glow of you know, respect and admiration. It's kind of
- 46:16Speaker 10: nice knowing that we have someone experience, especially with how
- 46:19Speaker 10: young our defensive coordinator is. Jerry Springer's a young rising coach,
- 46:22Speaker 10: you have to rod So it feels good because you
- 46:24Speaker 10: guys did mention. It kind of feels nice to let
- 46:27Speaker 10: the offensive offensive coordinators do what he does best, right
- 46:30Speaker 10: and not really think about it too much, not worry
- 46:31Speaker 10: about it too much, especially with as much experience that
- 46:34Speaker 10: he has, So it feels like a safe tick. I'm
- 46:36Speaker 10: honestly feeling better about this than if we picked up
- 46:38Speaker 10: an unknown in Nick Kaylee. You know, even if he's
- 46:40Speaker 10: enticing coming from asadamic bay Tree. But you know, the
- 46:44Speaker 10: one thing here is Mac has been ruined, his confidence,
- 46:48Speaker 10: you know, broken. It's kind of nice knowing no matter
- 46:50Speaker 10: who we have it, even if it's a bridge quarterback
- 46:52Speaker 10: or someone knew that the culture is really what Ja
- 46:54Speaker 10: Rob Mayle was going for here. And then that's something
- 46:56Speaker 10: that you know, will help hopefully motivate the players to
- 46:58Speaker 10: play as hard as they can. You know, we see
- 47:00Speaker 10: what motivation can do with certain teams and that's really nice.
- 47:03Speaker 10: So you know, well, let's see how that goes. And
- 47:06Speaker 10: one other thing I'm hoping for is that we see
- 47:08Speaker 10: in this offense. I hope we see a return of
- 47:10Speaker 10: the fullback. I've missed that, miss that we use them.
- 47:13Speaker 10: I've seen how the team's down in Miami, San Francisco, Baltimore,
- 47:16Speaker 10: your name, and how they use them. So I really
- 47:17Speaker 10: hope they incorporates some real full back in the offense.
- 47:21Speaker 5: So yeah, all right, thanks Domin. You know, it's I
- 47:24Speaker 5: hate to harp on the pass, but I don't think
- 47:28Speaker 5: you can underestimate the damage last not last year, but
- 47:31Speaker 5: the year before UH was caused by bringing Patricia and
- 47:36Speaker 5: Judge and putting them in charge of the offense. I think,
- 47:40Speaker 5: you know, I think things were salvageable after you know,
- 47:43Speaker 5: they got to the playoffs the year before, but you know,
- 47:46Speaker 5: the season was going downhill. But I think that killed
- 47:49Speaker 5: a lot of things. That was a that was a
- 47:51Speaker 5: really bad move in whether it was morale and the
- 47:54Speaker 5: coaching staff or morale in the locker room among your
- 47:58Speaker 5: you know, you know for your quarterback that that had
- 48:02Speaker 5: a lot of that did a lot of damage.
- 48:04Speaker 6: What do you think could have been done? Like I'm
- 48:05Speaker 6: just asking this, like, like is there a you know,
- 48:07Speaker 6: it's hard to go because Josh is Josh, and I
- 48:09Speaker 6: feel like there's no real like second option behind Josh
- 48:13Speaker 6: to teach Josh's offense. So like it just seems like
- 48:16Speaker 6: no matter what decision you made, you were going to
- 48:18Speaker 6: switch the offense on Mac Jones, like you were going
- 48:20Speaker 6: to lose any kind of continuity.
- 48:22Speaker 5: But not switching the offense is one thing, But doing
- 48:25Speaker 5: it with guys who have never done it before, No, Yeah,
- 48:29Speaker 5: just doubled the frustration for a lot of people. And
- 48:33Speaker 5: it wasn't fair. I stand by what I've said all along.
- 48:37Speaker 5: It wasn't fair to Matt Patricia. You know, I still
- 48:40Speaker 5: say he deserves thanks for giving it a go. It
- 48:44Speaker 5: wasn't his fault and he was trying to learn too,
- 48:48Speaker 5: But just the decision to do that had long lasting
- 48:52Speaker 5: effects throughout that season, and it trickled into the next season.
- 48:55Speaker 3: That's where I feel like the losing started to permeate
- 48:58Speaker 3: the locker room. Yeah, the morale, the mopiness and all that,
- 49:03Speaker 3: the frustration, that's where it really started. And I think
- 49:07Speaker 3: they were caught in between a little bit because Nick
- 49:10Speaker 3: Keyley was probably not quite ready yet to take the
- 49:13Speaker 3: offensive coordinator job on. But they couldn't get to Bill
- 49:16Speaker 3: O'Brien yet, so that wasn't really there.
- 49:18Speaker 1: It's easy have just done this.
- 49:21Speaker 3: Yeah, and there wasn't a ton of options in hindsight.
- 49:25Speaker 3: Should they have probably just lived with the growing pains
- 49:27Speaker 3: of a young staff with Nick Kayley. Maybe, but that's
- 49:30Speaker 3: easy to say now, I suppose.
- 49:32Speaker 5: Right, right, But you know, and and part of it,
- 49:35Speaker 5: you know, once it happened, then Mac didn't handle it well,
- 49:39Speaker 5: you know, and his lack of I think leadership made
- 49:43Speaker 5: that situation even worse.
- 49:45Speaker 7: It's just snowballed.
- 49:46Speaker 6: And I mean, to Evan's point, you know, it's I
- 49:48Speaker 6: even hear the guys saying, like, we don't have the answers.
- 49:50Speaker 6: And I think that's got to be a hard way
- 49:52Speaker 6: to enter a football game knowing that they throw curveball
- 49:55Speaker 6: at us today, were in trouble, you know, and that
- 49:59Speaker 6: that just going into a game, you feel like hand
- 50:02Speaker 6: and so.
- 50:02Speaker 5: Many you know, when you hear it in a lot
- 50:04Speaker 5: of different stories, that writers right, it's you know, it's
- 50:07Speaker 5: probably true, but you heard they didn't have answers, you know.
- 50:11Speaker 5: And these guys are dogs. They you know, they're all
- 50:14Speaker 5: alpha dogs. But somebody's got to be the alpha dog
- 50:17Speaker 5: and they need to be led, you know. And when
- 50:21Speaker 5: they think that you don't have answers, you're not putting
- 50:23Speaker 5: them in the best spot to succeed. You're screwing with
- 50:26Speaker 5: their career. You've lost them. You've lost them.
- 50:29Speaker 6: That's the worst thing as a coach. Yeah, you know,
- 50:30Speaker 6: if you don't, if you can't help your players put them.
- 50:33Speaker 5: I'm a player. My time in this league is limited.
- 50:36Speaker 5: I don't have time to waste seasons on you learning
- 50:38Speaker 5: how to do offense right. You know, I underestimated that
- 50:41Speaker 5: I thought that a head coach in this league could
- 50:45Speaker 5: adapt down to pretty much anything. I was wrong when
- 50:48Speaker 5: it came to specifically play calling, but going from a
- 50:51Speaker 5: different side of the ball and leading it up, I
- 50:54Speaker 5: guess it's not that easy.
- 50:56Speaker 1: Well, and you know, I think Bill admitted the same thing.
- 51:01Speaker 1: And it was a story that was relayed to me
- 51:03Speaker 1: that happened in Vegas that year, the infamous lateral game,
- 51:06Speaker 1: the Jacobe Myers Lateral game. That before that game, someone
- 51:11Speaker 1: told me there was a conversation between Bill and Josh,
- 51:14Speaker 1: and Bill told Josh I underestimated how much, how much
- 51:19Speaker 1: you know, went into it, you know, went into running
- 51:22Speaker 1: an offense.
- 51:23Speaker 5: See for Bill, I think all this is easy. Yeah,
- 51:26Speaker 5: I think he could call it. I think he could
- 51:28Speaker 5: call a game on offense with without a play sheet.
- 51:30Speaker 3: Well you're just called lead isoh no, but everything's in it.
- 51:34Speaker 5: I think he knows. I don't know.
- 51:35Speaker 1: It's a deep dive.
- 51:36Speaker 5: But but that's that's a that is a nerd joke,
- 51:41Speaker 5: but it's a very good nerd Yeah, running leak?
- 51:48Speaker 1: How hard is it? All that time on three?
- 51:50Speaker 5: Okay, all of Evan's fandom like, that's the best line ever.
- 51:53Speaker 1: I've given you my high school power, all right, twenty
- 51:56Speaker 1: two lead it's on one and every once in a
- 51:58Speaker 1: while we really got wild power. I left twenty three
- 52:01Speaker 1: leads on one, but all on.
- 52:04Speaker 6: What never first sound. I love the first sound. First sound.
- 52:07Speaker 1: That was the only goal line.
- 52:08Speaker 5: Yeah yeah, but I that.
- 52:11Speaker 1: Was how I scored first sound.
- 52:15Speaker 5: All right, let's go to Todd in North Carolina. I
- 52:19Speaker 5: hate Todd.
- 52:21Speaker 11: Hey, gentlemen, Hey, hey, I'm actually kind of excited about
- 52:24Speaker 11: this because I feel like, just looking at his history
- 52:27Speaker 11: and doing a little bit of research, he doesn't just
- 52:30Speaker 11: hop around. He's not like McDaniel's. You know, I need
- 52:32Speaker 11: to get that HC. I need to be the head
- 52:34Speaker 11: cover somewhere. I think he'll stick around, and I think
- 52:36Speaker 11: that's what we need because really Mac was a disaster
- 52:39Speaker 11: because of the continuity, just the lack of you know,
- 52:43Speaker 11: putting stuff in. Do I think that he fell below
- 52:45Speaker 11: his you know, his initial floor. Yeah, I think he
- 52:47Speaker 11: got just he just he went back to maybe high
- 52:50Speaker 11: school level or something. And that's because there's no consistency.
- 52:53Speaker 11: So I don't want to know if you guys feel
- 52:55Speaker 11: like this guy's going to stay around, because if van
- 52:57Speaker 11: Pelt stays around, we get a new cube.
- 52:59Speaker 5: Well, you can argue the other one. Why hasn't If
- 53:01Speaker 5: he's that good, why hasn't.
- 53:02Speaker 1: He would be my argument, right, I just I've never
- 53:04Speaker 1: heard his name mentioned in coaching, sir.
- 53:07Speaker 3: Now, maybe if he starts to call plays and is
- 53:09Speaker 3: successful with that, he could, but I, like, I would
- 53:13Speaker 3: think that he's not on that track.
- 53:15Speaker 6: Just be good, Like I don't really care, like, just
- 53:17Speaker 6: be good, like if he if he's.
- 53:19Speaker 1: Good, I mean, that's obviously the bottom line. But I don't.
- 53:22Speaker 1: And I heard this a little bit on the other station,
- 53:24Speaker 1: not Mine Your Morning, This Morning.
- 53:29Speaker 5: Ninety five is your for all your station, Paul Radio.
- 53:34Speaker 1: There was an argument then, that was the argument and
- 53:36Speaker 1: they were saying, you know, it worries me that he's
- 53:39Speaker 1: never you know, like like that they think he's going
- 53:41Speaker 1: to stay and like and I would fall on that, like, yeah,
- 53:46Speaker 1: it'd be great if he really bangs it out of
- 53:50Speaker 1: the park and he's content to be a coordinator. That's
- 53:52Speaker 1: a perfect world. But that's rare that Like, if he
- 53:56Speaker 1: knocks it out of the park and he has like
- 53:58Speaker 1: all of a sudden he turns this offense, or in
- 54:00Speaker 1: two years from now we're talking about him having one
- 54:02Speaker 1: of the best offenses in football and he doesn't have
- 54:05Speaker 1: any aspirations to do anymore, that would be really rare.
- 54:08Speaker 1: That would be great. I agree Todd's right. If that happened,
- 54:11Speaker 1: that would be awesome. But more likely he hasn't really
- 54:15Speaker 1: been getting any of these opportunities because no one has
- 54:19Speaker 1: been clamoring for him. That's the most likely scenario.
- 54:22Speaker 3: Yeah, I just think when you look at a guy
- 54:23Speaker 3: like that too, he's kind of missed the boat if
- 54:26Speaker 3: he was wanting to make that jump. Because now the
- 54:28Speaker 3: Bobby slow x and the Ben Johnson's like those are
- 54:30Speaker 3: the hot names now on the offensive side of the ball,
- 54:33Speaker 3: so on once your time has kind of skipped over.
- 54:36Speaker 3: But if I'm Girodd as a defensive minded guy, I'm
- 54:39Speaker 3: really mindful of succession plans on that side of the ball.
- 54:42Speaker 3: Not just because Van Pelt could go to head coaching job,
- 54:45Speaker 3: but maybe he ends up leaving to go someplace else
- 54:47Speaker 3: because he likes it.
- 54:48Speaker 1: And I want a guy who's kind of looking at
- 54:51Speaker 1: it as a stepping stone because he thinks if I
- 54:54Speaker 1: do the Bobby slowick and I go and I knock
- 54:56Speaker 1: it out of the park.
- 54:57Speaker 7: Yeah, I want to do great things.
- 54:58Speaker 1: That's good, but that's good for my team. Like I
- 55:01Speaker 1: never understand this. Right now, Boston College, we're going to
- 55:04Speaker 1: talk about this. You know again, they lost their coach
- 55:07Speaker 1: and they don't look at their job as a stepping
- 55:09Speaker 1: stone school, and I think they should. I think they
- 55:12Speaker 1: should embrace it because that would be good for them.
- 55:15Speaker 1: But they want a guy who comes home, you know.
- 55:17Speaker 1: They want a guy to come in and stay. Yeah,
- 55:21Speaker 1: they don't want another Coughlin.
- 55:23Speaker 3: They want Bill O'Brien, you know, Jared and Vermon.
- 55:27Speaker 1: I think Bill O'Brien would be crazy to take that job.
- 55:29Speaker 1: I really do.
- 55:30Speaker 3: Let's see what really wants to stay here.
- 55:31Speaker 6: Evan did a little sleuthing today because I might see Billy.
- 55:34Speaker 7: O'Brien getting getting the jersey mics today.
- 55:37Speaker 5: Oh yeah, oh yeah, I might have number.
- 55:39Speaker 3: I don't know.
- 55:39Speaker 5: I didn't.
- 55:40Speaker 3: I wasn't that much of a weirdo fred. But I
- 55:43Speaker 3: went to go up to the shelf that the takeout shelf,
- 55:45Speaker 3: grab my sandwich, and there my sandwich is sitting here.
- 55:48Speaker 3: There's a sandwich sitting next to it with the tag
- 55:50Speaker 3: that says Bill O'Brien.
- 55:52Speaker 1: And then you start looking around and I was like,
- 55:54Speaker 1: I thought, he's gonna how long do I How long
- 55:55Speaker 1: do I wait? Did you think of it? And You're
- 55:58Speaker 1: like the meeting was coming out.
- 55:59Speaker 3: I waited like a beat. I wasn't. I wasn't. I
- 56:02Speaker 3: wasn't because who I am? So like if you walk
- 56:04Speaker 3: through the door, like you know, absolutely and so like
- 56:07Speaker 3: I was like, all right, I'll wait like ten seconds
- 56:10Speaker 3: extra the normal, just to scond.
- 56:12Speaker 5: He's gonna wait an anything.
- 56:13Speaker 3: And then I was like, no, all right, I gotta go.
- 56:15Speaker 5: And then all of a sudden, this big chin comes.
- 56:17Speaker 5: It just sucks it into a hole.
- 56:20Speaker 1: Another one, another guy.
- 56:24Speaker 3: I would have loved to have had a conversation with.
- 56:26Speaker 5: Well, so yeah, he might even talk to you, yeah,
- 56:31Speaker 5: Jared writes in wants to take a shot at the media.
- 56:34Speaker 5: Cool He says, eleven offensive coordinator interviews and nobody reported
- 56:38Speaker 5: the guy they hired was even in consideration. What gives
- 56:41Speaker 5: that came in yesterday?
- 56:43Speaker 1: I was hired Boom bang bang.
- 56:45Speaker 3: Yeah, that that is fair, though, I mean it was.
- 56:48Speaker 3: I think Reese had the report yesterday that it was
- 56:51Speaker 3: cooling on Nick Kayley.
- 56:53Speaker 1: Yep, oh, I didn't see that these guys can be
- 56:55Speaker 1: convinced that it was Kaylee on the show. No.
- 56:57Speaker 3: I think yesterday Reese had a report on one of
- 56:59Speaker 3: your show, Paul, that that Nick Keley the last couple
- 57:03Speaker 3: of days that sort of had died down, but nobody
- 57:05Speaker 3: had Alex van Pelt in terms of.
- 57:06Speaker 5: The name Chad in Atlanta. While it's not the flashiest signing,
- 57:10Speaker 5: it may be a signing that was needed. Obviously, Van
- 57:12Speaker 5: Pelt isn't vying for a head coach position anytime soon,
- 57:15Speaker 5: so this may be a long term move to solidify
- 57:18Speaker 5: the OC position. That way, the next young quarterback doesn't
- 57:21Speaker 5: have to worry about changing ocs after a few years
- 57:24Speaker 5: like mac Jones did, especially since most of the available
- 57:27Speaker 5: and hired OC candidates are looking to be head coaches eventually. Uh,
- 57:32Speaker 5: a VP has the offensive experience that I think Mayo
- 57:36Speaker 5: will need in an OC moving forward.
- 57:39Speaker 3: I agree with that.
- 57:39Speaker 1: I like the experience partner, and I love the.
- 57:42Speaker 3: A v P. That's definitely gonna stay a VP. Yeah,
- 57:46Speaker 3: it's just easier to say.
- 57:47Speaker 5: So does Lion does he?
- 57:49Speaker 4: Is?
- 57:49Speaker 5: He gonna bring his kids Linus and Lucy? With him?
- 57:52Speaker 6: Oh right? Good? Fred didn't work on.
- 57:54Speaker 1: The text yesterday?
- 57:56Speaker 12: I did.
- 57:57Speaker 5: You don't know?
- 57:58Speaker 1: Oh no, I didn't get it. It was over my head.
- 58:00Speaker 5: You know, peanuts.
- 58:01Speaker 1: No, I had no idea what you were talking about.
- 58:04Speaker 5: You don't know, peanuts.
- 58:04Speaker 1: Yeah, that's what Matt's children.
- 58:08Speaker 3: I mean, yeah, but I was really young.
- 58:10Speaker 5: Lucy and Lionis they were brother and sister and their
- 58:13Speaker 5: last name was Van Pelt.
- 58:15Speaker 6: Okay, it sounds like they come from money, and I
- 58:17Speaker 6: just I never really saw that line up with like
- 58:19Speaker 6: Linus and the Blanket and you know, like the Van Pelts,
- 58:22Speaker 6: like they sound like you know what stra money?
- 58:24Speaker 5: Right?
- 58:24Speaker 1: They like from money?
- 58:26Speaker 3: Well, mister Hollywood's got to think about this.
- 58:30Speaker 5: Eric was so against the Peanuts remember that. No, oh no,
- 58:33Speaker 5: it wasn't Eric was Andy.
- 58:34Speaker 7: Andy didn't like I don't like stuff.
- 58:36Speaker 5: They're not funny.
- 58:36Speaker 7: They're not funny, but it's not funny.
- 58:38Speaker 6: But you just put on the Halloween one and Halloween
- 58:41Speaker 6: and the Christmas one at Christmas and maybe the Thanksgiving one.
- 58:46Speaker 6: Was it every funny? I mean Pepper and Patty's inviting
- 58:48Speaker 6: herself over and stuff. I mean, sorry, it's an emergency podcast.
- 58:50Speaker 5: I can't talk serious. They chuck coming over.
- 58:53Speaker 6: I'm bringing Marcy too, like like, come on, what are
- 58:55Speaker 6: you doing?
- 58:56Speaker 5: Christian says, did we forget? Did we forget? A VP
- 59:01Speaker 5: also coached Aaron Rodgers Rogers was actually we forget?
- 59:04Speaker 1: Everybody says he's so great with quarterbacks. That's the only
- 59:06Speaker 1: one he ever had that had any accomplishment.
- 59:08Speaker 5: Rogers was actually up to we forget wow. Rogers was
- 59:13Speaker 5: actually upset and spoke with the media when they let
- 59:16Speaker 5: him go. I would trade up for number one and
- 59:18Speaker 5: get Caleb Williams.
- 59:19Speaker 3: I don't know how those two things are related, but sure,
- 59:22Speaker 3: I mean it could be a bad sign that he
- 59:26Speaker 3: didn't talk to me.
- 59:27Speaker 1: So I like that with a lot of quarterbacks mostly
- 59:32Speaker 1: sort of average at best, ones like Trent Edwards and
- 59:36Speaker 1: Ryan Fitzpatrick and Andy Dalton after his like good years,
- 59:40Speaker 1: I'll give him credit a little bit for Baker.
- 59:42Speaker 3: Baker was pretty good at the beginning.
- 59:44Speaker 1: That's where I said, I'll give him a little credit
- 59:45Speaker 1: for Baker's But you know, Aaron Rodgers is like the
- 59:48Speaker 1: only quarter I mean, let's face it, do we give
- 59:51Speaker 1: him Alex van Pelt credit for Aaron Rodgers or are
- 59:53Speaker 1: we just gonna assume Aaron Rodgers is pretty good?
- 59:56Speaker 6: That's all Alex Pelton, Okay, in my book told me
- 59:59Speaker 6: experience in.
- 1:00:00Speaker 5: The ground up Jason and Saint Petersburg. For everyone complaining
- 1:00:04Speaker 5: about Van Pelt getting fired from Cleveland and being a
- 1:00:07Speaker 5: bad hire, weren't you the same people begging for Mike
- 1:00:10Speaker 5: Rabel to be the head coach and he got fired
- 1:00:12Speaker 5: from Tennessee.
- 1:00:13Speaker 1: Yeah, Andy Harri absolutely, that's directed write it in all right,
- 1:00:17Speaker 1: not one because both of those are true.
- 1:00:19Speaker 5: No one down has been played, and we don't know
- 1:00:21Speaker 5: what the draft of free agency looks like. So please
- 1:00:24Speaker 5: chill out. Let's just see what happens. PS. Love the show,
- 1:00:27Speaker 5: and you guys and gals are great. Keep up the
- 1:00:29Speaker 5: good word.
- 1:00:29Speaker 3: I don't think any we're not freaking out about no
- 1:00:31Speaker 3: a VP. I'm going to sell that. But also Mike Rabel,
- 1:00:34Speaker 3: who happened to have a run in with him yesterday.
- 1:00:37Speaker 6: Yeah, did he say hi to you back?
- 1:00:38Speaker 7: Did you say hello?
- 1:00:39Speaker 1: Yeah?
- 1:00:39Speaker 3: We said hello to each other.
- 1:00:40Speaker 7: Yeah.
- 1:00:40Speaker 5: Yeah. John in La wants to know the show.
- 1:00:44Speaker 1: What do we need to fix that?
- 1:00:47Speaker 5: The Rabel thing?
- 1:00:49Speaker 1: Do we talk about that on the show yesterday?
- 1:00:51Speaker 5: What?
- 1:00:52Speaker 1: No? Okay? Evidently we didn't go ahead, move along, proceed
- 1:00:55Speaker 1: all not for air.
- 1:00:57Speaker 5: Well.
- 1:00:58Speaker 1: I was wondering if we were talking about that on
- 1:00:59Speaker 1: the air yesterday Mike Rabel, because I knew that they
- 1:01:03Speaker 1: had and I thought we might have talked about that.
- 1:01:06Speaker 5: On Oh no, we talught that they were on the plane.
- 1:01:08Speaker 1: Right, but not the one to Boston. Evidently not the one,
- 1:01:12Speaker 1: So I think that changed. So we did talk about
- 1:01:14Speaker 1: it on the air. Yeah, so that to me, that
- 1:01:16Speaker 1: changes the concept the concept on the plane. We got
- 1:01:20Speaker 1: that information telephone, the game of telephone.
- 1:01:23Speaker 3: No, I got a funny story for about it. But
- 1:01:25Speaker 3: I'll tell you.
- 1:01:26Speaker 5: John in La says Arthur brought up this possibility. I
- 1:01:29Speaker 5: wanted to ask about the reality. What are the odds
- 1:01:31Speaker 5: we'll get us sit down with Van Pelton Evan for
- 1:01:33Speaker 5: Pages dot com video or article. I they could be
- 1:01:36Speaker 5: fascinating to learn where a VP is scheme wise and
- 1:01:39Speaker 5: what Evan has to say about it.
- 1:01:40Speaker 3: Okay, so who wrote this email?
- 1:01:43Speaker 5: John and La? John and La.
- 1:01:44Speaker 3: Fantastic question John in l A and one that I
- 1:01:47Speaker 3: was planning on asking these two about as soon as
- 1:01:50Speaker 3: we're done question.
- 1:01:52Speaker 6: We're not legally allowed to let Evan within fifty feet
- 1:01:55Speaker 6: of anyone in the coaching staff right now.
- 1:01:57Speaker 5: Listen, No, we talked about called an r O.
- 1:02:01Speaker 3: We just want to talk about the ball, that's it.
- 1:02:03Speaker 1: And you talked about Mayo and getting you on the show.
- 1:02:06Speaker 1: We're also going to do our best to get some
- 1:02:10Speaker 1: time with all three of the coordinators. Yes, you know,
- 1:02:13Speaker 1: for some, for some on camera stuff has written, So
- 1:02:17Speaker 1: what do you think of r pos?
- 1:02:19Speaker 5: Yeah, but I think in in depth with evan interview
- 1:02:24Speaker 5: might might be good.
- 1:02:26Speaker 7: Get up on the board.
- 1:02:27Speaker 5: It's not for people who like football.
- 1:02:29Speaker 1: Or anybody else. It's people like it's people who like football.
- 1:02:37Speaker 5: Let's see a lot of emails. Jordan writes in thank
- 1:02:43Speaker 5: God for the Emergency Pod. There's a lack of Patriots
- 1:02:46Speaker 5: media on Fridays and that has been starving for information.
- 1:02:50Speaker 5: I just have a message to Patriots Nation. Justin Fields
- 1:02:53Speaker 5: is not the answer. I don't know where this erroneous
- 1:02:56Speaker 5: notion came from, of seeking a washed up ten to
- 1:02:59Speaker 5: twenty eight.
- 1:03:01Speaker 1: Ten and twenty eight his records tenant tenant sounds about right.
- 1:03:06Speaker 5: Yeah, I don't know is the answer for a rebuild.
- 1:03:08Speaker 5: He's not good. He's an okase he had an okay season.
- 1:03:11Speaker 5: You're not going to get the most out of him.
- 1:03:13Speaker 5: He's already given everything he has and it's not good enough.
- 1:03:16Speaker 5: Him and M HJ are not the answer. Please please
- 1:03:20Speaker 5: stop suggesting this. I can't handle hearing that take anymore.
- 1:03:24Speaker 5: Your guys were.
- 1:03:24Speaker 6: Saying, Yeah, your guys you guys, Marvin Harris, Marvin Harrison.
- 1:03:31Speaker 1: That then that's junior think bugs me too, that's the path.
- 1:03:34Speaker 5: But yeah, your guys, Felger, we're all over that plan.
- 1:03:38Speaker 1: Yeah, they don't want to do that.
- 1:03:39Speaker 5: No, they want they want to get Harris and get.
- 1:03:44Speaker 3: Justin Field just because Felger is terrified of taking a quarterback.
- 1:03:47Speaker 1: Now, I just don't understand why you can roll the
- 1:03:49Speaker 1: dice and take a tackle at three or Marvin Harrison
- 1:03:52Speaker 1: at three, but if you take a quarterback, you know
- 1:03:53Speaker 1: the world's gonna end.
- 1:03:55Speaker 3: I also don't understand. Isn't Justin Fields a huge roll
- 1:03:57Speaker 3: of the dice just equal.
- 1:03:58Speaker 1: To Yeah, I think so, But I would strongly push
- 1:04:02Speaker 1: back on that, Like he's played three years and that
- 1:04:04Speaker 1: means he stinks and he will forever stink and that's
- 1:04:07Speaker 1: that's it. Like I I've seen guys get better, and
- 1:04:10Speaker 1: I think that he has incrementally gotten better. I think
- 1:04:13Speaker 1: he was better in the second half of the season
- 1:04:14Speaker 1: last year than he was in the first half. You're
- 1:04:16Speaker 1: at the point now, am I gonna like put all
- 1:04:18Speaker 1: my eggs in the Justin Fields basket?
- 1:04:20Speaker 4: No?
- 1:04:20Speaker 5: I'm with Evan, No way, you got a big role you.
- 1:04:23Speaker 6: Gotta beat every bush you can. You have to be creative.
- 1:04:25Speaker 6: You can't rule anything out. You have to take the
- 1:04:28Speaker 6: chances you do. I mean, I'm not you know, we
- 1:04:30Speaker 6: can talk about Justin Fields, but like, just generally, I.
- 1:04:32Speaker 3: Don't hate the idea of Justin Fields, but if you're
- 1:04:34Speaker 3: giving up like a third round pick for Justin Fields,
- 1:04:37Speaker 3: I would mud if it's gonna take that much, and
- 1:04:39Speaker 3: you can't then use another top one hundred pick on
- 1:04:41Speaker 3: a quarterback because now you're using your second and your
- 1:04:44Speaker 3: third round.
- 1:04:45Speaker 7: And that was kind of as they were flirting with that.
- 1:04:47Speaker 3: Yeah, I don't want If I could steal Justin Fields
- 1:04:50Speaker 3: from the Bears because they want nothing to do with him,
- 1:04:53Speaker 3: and then I'm drafting Justin Fields, I'm taking Justin Fields
- 1:04:56Speaker 3: for nothing, and then drafting Bo Nicks in the second round,
- 1:05:01Speaker 3: and then one of those two guys ends up being
- 1:05:03Speaker 3: my guy. Then I guess I could get behind it.
- 1:05:05Speaker 3: But if you're already making a big leap for Justin
- 1:05:09Speaker 3: Fields and that's your guy, like that's the guy.
- 1:05:11Speaker 1: Yeah, I don't want it. I don't want another quarterback
- 1:05:13Speaker 1: if I'm making a trade, right, he's the guy.
- 1:05:17Speaker 3: It is weird, though, he's only justin Field's only twenty five.
- 1:05:20Speaker 1: Well, and that's my point about I'm just understand why
- 1:05:22Speaker 1: his story is completely done written. That's it.
- 1:05:24Speaker 3: He's like a year older than some of the quarterbacks
- 1:05:27Speaker 3: in this draft because and he's played three years in
- 1:05:30Speaker 3: the NFL.
- 1:05:31Speaker 1: Especially this draft, like these guys have played six years
- 1:05:33Speaker 1: of college football, like some of these guys Daniels. I
- 1:05:38Speaker 1: mean they've had like long, they've been in college.
- 1:05:41Speaker 3: For six years, twenty five years old, already there fifth
- 1:05:45Speaker 3: and sixty year seniors.
- 1:05:46Speaker 5: Yeah. Yeah. Tyler says he heard the rumor about Bill
- 1:05:49Speaker 5: O'Brien going to Boston College.
- 1:05:51Speaker 3: It's all over the X machine.
- 1:05:53Speaker 5: And l from Wisconsin says, I haven't snorted in a while,
- 1:05:56Speaker 5: but hearing Fred bring back the Bill could call a
- 1:05:59Speaker 5: game without play sheet line really got me. That's not
- 1:06:02Speaker 5: a joke. I really believe it's true.
- 1:06:05Speaker 7: I thought she was gonna say Evans.
- 1:06:06Speaker 5: Yeah, uh, let's see. You know those people aren't on here,
- 1:06:10Speaker 5: they're on substack. Evans people.
- 1:06:13Speaker 1: That's true.
- 1:06:14Speaker 5: The Liz armyla Ours.
- 1:06:18Speaker 3: Carl Weathers died.
- 1:06:23Speaker 1: He was just on the.
- 1:06:24Speaker 5: Commercial car with Gronk Creed. Carl Weathers, he was just
- 1:06:31Speaker 5: on the the Draftings commercial with Gronk like it's running
- 1:06:35Speaker 5: right now, that's AFL Like you must have had like
- 1:06:37Speaker 5: a heart attack or something. I don't know, but I
- 1:06:40Speaker 5: mean that sucks.
- 1:06:42Speaker 6: I mean Predator, Yeah, happy Gilmour right.
- 1:06:49Speaker 3: Predators are underrated action movie.
- 1:06:52Speaker 5: Not bad?
- 1:06:53Speaker 3: Yeah?
- 1:06:53Speaker 7: What was his name?
- 1:06:55Speaker 5: No, that's how this emergency podcast someplace to go get
- 1:06:59Speaker 5: a week.
- 1:07:00Speaker 1: I gotta find something to eat at some point though. Oh,
- 1:07:02Speaker 1: the schedule was not conducive to lunch today.
- 1:07:05Speaker 5: Well, we'll go to three, We'll do twenty more minutes.
- 1:07:07Speaker 5: Mark's in Connecticut. What's up, Mark, it's going on today?
- 1:07:11Speaker 11: Guys, love your show.
- 1:07:12Speaker 1: Thanks Mark, Thanks so Evan.
- 1:07:15Speaker 2: How does Joe Milton look? This kid out of Tennessee
- 1:07:18Speaker 2: is really intriguing because he's like a Josh Allen. I
- 1:07:21Speaker 2: feel like replica. I feel like you can pick Marvin
- 1:07:24Speaker 2: Harrison at three and pick Joe Milton in eath of
- 1:07:27Speaker 2: the second or third round. I want to do guys
- 1:07:29Speaker 2: stake on how he looked sable?
- 1:07:31Speaker 5: Right?
- 1:07:32Speaker 3: Yeah, so he looked pretty good in practice. Joe Milton
- 1:07:34Speaker 3: is is definitely a project. Though he's someone that at Tennessee.
- 1:07:40Speaker 3: It took him a while to even get the starting job,
- 1:07:42Speaker 3: and then he had some just accuracy decision making issues.
- 1:07:47Speaker 3: I compare him more to like Day three Anthony Richardson
- 1:07:51Speaker 3: than Josh Allen. I think that Josh Allen was a way, way,
- 1:07:54Speaker 3: way better player than Joe Milton. But Anthony Richardson, when
- 1:07:59Speaker 3: you talk about size, tools, athleticism, arm strength, not quite
- 1:08:05Speaker 3: as polished as Richardson. Obviously, that's why he's he's kind
- 1:08:08Speaker 3: of like the discount version of that. But if you're
- 1:08:10Speaker 3: talking about him as like a double dip quarterback, or
- 1:08:13Speaker 3: they have Baker Mayfield and you're just taking a flyer
- 1:08:15Speaker 3: on a guy in like the fourth round, then Joe
- 1:08:18Speaker 3: Milton is a is an interesting tally was like, what,
- 1:08:22Speaker 3: he looks huge, He's like six six huge.
- 1:08:25Speaker 6: He looked like I was kind of calling him wish
- 1:08:26Speaker 6: Cam Newton, like he looked like, you know, kind of
- 1:08:28Speaker 6: like the budget Cam Newton version.
- 1:08:30Speaker 1: And there are times where you watch him play and
- 1:08:32Speaker 1: you're like, there it is, you can see it.
- 1:08:34Speaker 6: But yesterday I was watching Little and they're on seven
- 1:08:38Speaker 6: or seven, and he just threw it right to like this,
- 1:08:40Speaker 6: like just the guy was standing there, just threw it
- 1:08:42Speaker 6: right to the.
- 1:08:42Speaker 1: I was just talking about like the Tennessee games, like
- 1:08:44Speaker 1: you could see it like at times, like they would
- 1:08:47Speaker 1: play and they'd be really competitive because they weren't a
- 1:08:49Speaker 1: bad team Tennessee. And then you know, they put together
- 1:08:54Speaker 1: a drive and then the other team will get on
- 1:08:55Speaker 1: to score, and then they put together a drive and
- 1:08:57Speaker 1: then all of a sudden, like he looked totally different,
- 1:09:00Speaker 1: and before you know it, they're you know, they're punting
- 1:09:02Speaker 1: like four times in a row in the games over. Yeah,
- 1:09:04Speaker 1: you just couldn't seem to put full games together.
- 1:09:07Speaker 3: His his arm talent is extremely enticing. And I think
- 1:09:11Speaker 3: that going to the Senior Bowl practices coming off of
- 1:09:14Speaker 3: year watching Mac Jones and Bailey Zappi for six months
- 1:09:17Speaker 3: and then seeing a guy that can actually drive it
- 1:09:19Speaker 3: between two defenders fifteen yards down the field, You're like,
- 1:09:23Speaker 3: all right, that that I don't normally see that in Foxborough.
- 1:09:26Speaker 1: So that was nice.
- 1:09:27Speaker 3: Spencer Rattler Small, that was the one on because if
- 1:09:31Speaker 3: I had to say who was the most consistent down
- 1:09:34Speaker 3: in Mobile this week, it probably would have been Spencer Rattler.
- 1:09:36Speaker 3: But he's a shade under six to one.
- 1:09:38Speaker 1: Yeah, and I don't I didn't really love med Oklahoma
- 1:09:41Speaker 1: and I didn't loved South Carolina either, but I saw
- 1:09:46Speaker 1: some people saying that the Patriots had some interest there,
- 1:09:49Speaker 1: and I.
- 1:09:49Speaker 3: Just, well, he worked with the team that you know.
- 1:09:54Speaker 3: I think Spencer Rattler probably had the most consistent week.
- 1:09:58Speaker 3: I know a lot of the teams. We're really impressed
- 1:10:00Speaker 3: with Michael Pennix in the interviews and just sort of
- 1:10:03Speaker 3: his his gravitas and his leadership.
- 1:10:05Speaker 1: And his u on the field. Eldred yelled at me
- 1:10:08Speaker 1: because I thought that I had heard people saying that
- 1:10:10Speaker 1: he kind of struggled a little bit, and he said, no, no, no, no, no.
- 1:10:14Speaker 3: Second day one was it was a little bit of
- 1:10:17Speaker 3: an issue for him. I thought that he didn't he
- 1:10:20Speaker 3: was right down the middle.
- 1:10:21Speaker 12: To me.
- 1:10:21Speaker 3: Didn't help his stock, didn't hurt his stock. He just
- 1:10:24Speaker 3: had a fine week. Bone Nicks probably heard his stock
- 1:10:27Speaker 3: a little bit, and then Rattler and Milton probably helped there.
- 1:10:30Speaker 5: What do you think of Rattler.
- 1:10:32Speaker 3: I just think he's small, Like I think he throws
- 1:10:34Speaker 3: a nice ball. I think he's got some moxy to
- 1:10:36Speaker 3: throw the ball down the field and some arm talent
- 1:10:38Speaker 3: to do it. But I'm just so out on short quarterbacks,
- 1:10:41Speaker 3: like I just need somebody that that can tools he
- 1:10:43Speaker 3: that Yeah, that's a guy A little bit more to him.
- 1:10:46Speaker 5: Diana writes in She's from New Hampshire. First time written,
- 1:10:49Speaker 5: longtime listener, nice look forward every time listening. I was
- 1:10:53Speaker 5: just wondering what you thought of Baker Mayfield with Alex
- 1:10:55Speaker 5: Van Pelt. As soon as Pelt was hired, I immediately thought
- 1:10:59Speaker 5: of Baker Mayfield and how he was really good this year,
- 1:11:02Speaker 5: his year with the Bucks. This year with the Bucks,
- 1:11:04Speaker 5: Baker would be a great fit. I would think with
- 1:11:07Speaker 5: Pelt and we could select Marvin Harrison at third from Pelton,
- 1:11:11Speaker 5: and second round we could select a good tackle. I
- 1:11:14Speaker 5: would roll the dice with and draft a quarterback later,
- 1:11:17Speaker 5: or maybe trade several picks to move up and get
- 1:11:19Speaker 5: a quarterback. What do you think? My feelings won't be
- 1:11:22Speaker 5: hurt if you disagree. Just thought it would be a
- 1:11:24Speaker 5: viable option.
- 1:11:25Speaker 1: I think I think Mayfield is a viable bridge option.
- 1:11:28Speaker 5: But he's gonna want money.
- 1:11:29Speaker 6: Yeah, yep, he'll have to pay him little bit, I think.
- 1:11:31Speaker 7: I mean Evan said it, this is he gonna get
- 1:11:32Speaker 7: away from Tampa Bay.
- 1:11:33Speaker 6: It just seems like usually those situations where teams like
- 1:11:36Speaker 6: that find a little bit of gold and a veteran
- 1:11:38Speaker 6: quarterback that can play for them.
- 1:11:39Speaker 7: They usually do their best at to hang on them
- 1:11:41Speaker 7: and not let.
- 1:11:42Speaker 5: Them get away. Tom writes in with a VP's higher
- 1:11:45Speaker 5: could this be a better fit for cold Strange. I'm
- 1:11:48Speaker 5: by no means saying he was a good pick, but
- 1:11:50Speaker 5: could the new run schemes be a better fit for him?
- 1:11:52Speaker 5: And also, signing on when you to a new contract
- 1:11:55Speaker 5: has to be number one priority. Not re signing him
- 1:11:57Speaker 5: would be malpractice. We have so many holes to fill
- 1:12:00Speaker 5: on this team, and we need to use cash to
- 1:12:02Speaker 5: fill some of them.
- 1:12:04Speaker 3: Yeah, I'm not too concerned about I think we're gonna
- 1:12:07Speaker 3: get a lot of these questions of like which lineman fits,
- 1:12:10Speaker 3: I'm not like that concerned about it. I think one
- 1:12:12Speaker 3: of the good things about what the Browns were able
- 1:12:13Speaker 3: to do is they were very game plan oriented in
- 1:12:16Speaker 3: the run game, so they called plays based off of opponent,
- 1:12:19Speaker 3: and I think that they could probably do anything to
- 1:12:22Speaker 3: fit if they had to, like really adjust it because
- 1:12:25Speaker 3: they have a three hundred and forty pound tackle Like,
- 1:12:27Speaker 3: I'm not worried about that as much as as maybe
- 1:12:30Speaker 3: the quarterback position.
- 1:12:32Speaker 5: Let's see back to the phones Willem and Philam. What's up? William?
- 1:12:36Speaker 4: Thanks?
- 1:12:37Speaker 5: Greg? How you doing all right? All right?
- 1:12:40Speaker 10: Questions forever? Well, I'll just say this first, go, I
- 1:12:43Speaker 10: want Drake May on our team though, but if we
- 1:12:46Speaker 10: can't get Drake May, I take Marvin Hamerson any day period.
- 1:12:51Speaker 10: So I just wanted to say something that in tours
- 1:12:53Speaker 10: of him and Alex Bark they were talking about, Okay,
- 1:12:57Speaker 10: there's there's like ten more other receivers in the draft
- 1:13:01Speaker 10: or not. My push back to y'all this okay, Uh,
- 1:13:04Speaker 10: the Patriots passed on many receivers, correct.
- 1:13:08Speaker 5: They passed that over the years. Yes, yeah, yeah, yeah,
- 1:13:11Speaker 5: So you.
- 1:13:13Speaker 10: Know, I'll just say, man, we need so much man,
- 1:13:17Speaker 10: Bill left this team so much in the shamble.
- 1:13:19Speaker 2: Man, it's so bad.
- 1:13:21Speaker 10: Man. But but my take is just you have a
- 1:13:25Speaker 10: chance to get the number one receiver. But yes, we
- 1:13:27Speaker 10: need a tackle. I'm with you, We need to we
- 1:13:29Speaker 10: need a quarterback. I'm with you. Haven't we need everything.
- 1:13:32Speaker 10: I understand it. But were talking, man, Marvin Harrison, this guy,
- 1:13:37Speaker 10: I don't know if he's going to be that dude.
- 1:13:39Speaker 10: I don't know, you know, just like Paul was saying
- 1:13:43Speaker 10: at one point, I don't know.
- 1:13:44Speaker 9: I don't know what he's gonna be. But yeah, man,
- 1:13:47Speaker 9: I just I.
- 1:13:48Speaker 10: Just want the guy and I take him. But if
- 1:13:50Speaker 10: we got to, I'm all over the place right there.
- 1:13:53Speaker 5: But it is not a better chance. There's a better
- 1:13:57Speaker 5: chance than not that he is immediately a top ten
- 1:14:00Speaker 5: quarter wide receiver, Mars Marvin Harrison. True or false? I
- 1:14:05Speaker 5: think true. I have no idea top ten receiver better
- 1:14:11Speaker 5: chance than not.
- 1:14:13Speaker 7: With any quarterback there.
- 1:14:14Speaker 5: Yeah, with any quarterback I don't know.
- 1:14:16Speaker 1: Is Garrett Wilson one, Yeah.
- 1:14:18Speaker 3: Garrett Wilson.
- 1:14:18Speaker 5: I think he is in the top ten.
- 1:14:20Speaker 1: I was looking at paper.
- 1:14:24Speaker 5: Yeah, I was thinking about that the other day, and
- 1:14:25Speaker 5: I was like, yeah, I think Garrett Wilson would be
- 1:14:27Speaker 5: in the top ten.
- 1:14:27Speaker 1: I mean I would put like Jefferson, Jamar Chase killed
- 1:14:32Speaker 1: jam Chase Adams, A J.
- 1:14:35Speaker 5: Brown, I put it, I put, I put Deebo Samuel
- 1:14:38Speaker 5: up there, I put I wouldn't I put the kid
- 1:14:41Speaker 5: from San Francisco in there? No, the other way.
- 1:14:46Speaker 1: I'd put a UK ahead of Deebo Samuel for sure.
- 1:14:48Speaker 1: But I don't know if he's a top ten receiver either.
- 1:14:52Speaker 5: I mean, there's a lot of good receivers, but I
- 1:14:53Speaker 5: think Barbara.
- 1:14:54Speaker 3: I think that's the point, right, is that there is
- 1:14:56Speaker 3: a lot of good receivers, and it's a really good class.
- 1:14:59Speaker 3: There's receivers around the league.
- 1:15:01Speaker 1: It just if you.
- 1:15:02Speaker 3: I like Marvin Harrison Junior as much as everybody else does.
- 1:15:06Speaker 3: I think he's a can't miss prospect, and I don't
- 1:15:09Speaker 3: throw that around too easily. Whether he's a Hall of
- 1:15:13Speaker 3: Famer like his dad, I'm not sure, but he's going
- 1:15:15Speaker 3: to be a good player in the league no matter what.
- 1:15:17Speaker 3: I agree, And I think that the bottom line is
- 1:15:20Speaker 3: those that you have to think about allocating resources and
- 1:15:23Speaker 3: where are the most important resources.
- 1:15:25Speaker 5: I know they have to like it's it's NFL twenty
- 1:15:28Speaker 5: twenty four wide receiver, right. The hun're a huge and
- 1:15:32Speaker 5: you know, over the last few years we've worried about
- 1:15:35Speaker 5: the Patriots hitting on one pick, so at least we
- 1:15:38Speaker 5: know that their first pick will be a good player.
- 1:15:41Speaker 1: I don't know that any more than anything else. I
- 1:15:43Speaker 1: don't know why you always.
- 1:15:43Speaker 5: Say that, but you can't know for certain, for anything exactly.
- 1:15:47Speaker 1: But that's exactly right. But that's but everybody's treating this
- 1:15:51Speaker 1: particular pick like it is.
- 1:15:52Speaker 5: Because absolute, because the odds. I don't understand the odds
- 1:15:55Speaker 5: are that he's going to be good.
- 1:15:56Speaker 1: I agree, Okay, I agree, the odds are that it's
- 1:15:59Speaker 1: going to be good, just like the odds are that
- 1:16:01Speaker 1: Caleb Williams is going to be good.
- 1:16:04Speaker 5: Yeah, but he might not be. But we we're not
- 1:16:05Speaker 5: going to get him.
- 1:16:06Speaker 1: No. I'm just saying, like the odds are, the best
- 1:16:09Speaker 1: player on the board at those positions are gonna be good, right,
- 1:16:12Speaker 1: But it doesn't always work out that way, I know.
- 1:16:14Speaker 5: But we never get to take the best player on
- 1:16:16Speaker 5: the board. We finally do have that chance to do it.
- 1:16:18Speaker 5: So if somebody says you got to take Marvin Harrison,
- 1:16:21Speaker 5: I'm not arguing.
- 1:16:22Speaker 1: So listen, take Marvin Harrison and I think that they
- 1:16:25Speaker 1: will have taken.
- 1:16:26Speaker 5: Go ahead, go ahead, William Kenn.
- 1:16:28Speaker 10: I just want to say, look when you had when
- 1:16:30Speaker 10: we had the greatest quarterback of all time, Okay, and
- 1:16:33Speaker 10: we passed up on all the receivers from free agency
- 1:16:36Speaker 10: to draft because you know who. But that's me to here.
- 1:16:39Speaker 10: But now you have a chance to get that, you
- 1:16:42Speaker 10: know what I'm saying, Like, look look at if you
- 1:16:44Speaker 10: look at the history of how many receivers we passed on.
- 1:16:47Speaker 10: I mean, I can name many, okay, from free agency
- 1:16:50Speaker 10: to the trand and this is regidulous too.
- 1:16:51Speaker 11: And these were blue ship players.
- 1:16:53Speaker 10: That could have did them for our team. And now
- 1:16:55Speaker 10: we have a chance to do that, Fellas, we have
- 1:16:58Speaker 10: a chance. Now you know what I'm saying. I'll just
- 1:17:00Speaker 10: leave it, so all.
- 1:17:02Speaker 5: Right, thanks William.
- 1:17:04Speaker 1: I just would ask Evan, who do you think is
- 1:17:06Speaker 1: the best receiver in football?
- 1:17:10Speaker 5: Kill?
- 1:17:10Speaker 1: Okay, So is the difference between Tyreek Hill and say,
- 1:17:17Speaker 1: Amari Cooper really good receiver but not top five really
- 1:17:23Speaker 1: good player? You know, I'm just using him as an example.
- 1:17:26Speaker 1: You can probably come up with a better one. Is
- 1:17:28Speaker 1: that difference bigger, more important, less important than the difference
- 1:17:33Speaker 1: between Patrick Mahomes potentially and you know some run of
- 1:17:41Speaker 1: the mill starter Baker Mayfield. I think that's the point, right,
- 1:17:44Speaker 1: That's what I'm trying to get at, Like, there are
- 1:17:47Speaker 1: a ton of really really talented receivers I don't need
- 1:17:52Speaker 1: justin Jefferson what I want him, absolutely I would love
- 1:17:56Speaker 1: to have them. But the difference between even even in Cincinnati,
- 1:18:01Speaker 1: difference between Jamar Chase and t Higgins is there's a difference.
- 1:18:06Speaker 1: There's one's better than the other, yes, but it's not
- 1:18:10Speaker 1: as big of a difference between a really good quarterback
- 1:18:12Speaker 1: in an average quarterback.
- 1:18:14Speaker 5: Correct.
- 1:18:14Speaker 1: That's way bigger correct to me. And there are way
- 1:18:17Speaker 1: more t Higgins out there than there are good quarterbacks.
- 1:18:21Speaker 5: And if Andrew Luck was there, I would say you
- 1:18:23Speaker 5: got to take him. You know, he's he's I would
- 1:18:26Speaker 5: say there's more chance than not that he's going to
- 1:18:28Speaker 5: be a top ten call.
- 1:18:29Speaker 1: What I'm saying is, I'm fine if I don't get
- 1:18:31Speaker 1: Marvin Harrison Junior, if I end up getting a Doonsa
- 1:18:35Speaker 1: or neighbors. I don't think that. I don't think they're
- 1:18:38Speaker 1: the same. I don't think they're I don't think that
- 1:18:41Speaker 1: they as good as Harrison. I'm not suggesting that they are.
- 1:18:44Speaker 1: But I think there are a lot of good receivers
- 1:18:46Speaker 1: I know you can get that are really good place.
- 1:18:49Speaker 5: I agree, but I like and I don't know. I'm
- 1:18:50Speaker 5: just going by what the Nudnicks say. I agree with,
- 1:18:53Speaker 5: you know, and I haven't heard this much clatter about
- 1:18:57Speaker 5: you know, there's been clatter about wide receivers.
- 1:18:59Speaker 1: But don't you think that a little something to do
- 1:19:00Speaker 1: with his name?
- 1:19:03Speaker 3: I don't know, I do would say the last time
- 1:19:05Speaker 3: this much hype for receivers. Jamar Chase, I was, I.
- 1:19:08Speaker 5: Didn't even hear it this much about Jamar Chase.
- 1:19:10Speaker 3: Honestly, well, Jamar Chase was like, I can't mat like
- 1:19:13Speaker 3: he was the same in the same boat. It was
- 1:19:15Speaker 3: this this type of of guy.
- 1:19:17Speaker 5: I just I don't once you started playing he was,
- 1:19:19Speaker 5: you know, I just.
- 1:19:20Speaker 3: Think that it's when it comes to roster building, it's
- 1:19:24Speaker 3: building it backwards, like you're you're starting with the shiny
- 1:19:28Speaker 3: toy when you don't have an offensive line, you don't
- 1:19:30Speaker 3: have a quarterback to get him the ball, but you
- 1:19:32Speaker 3: have this this, this Ferrari on the outside.
- 1:19:36Speaker 1: It's like what what?
- 1:19:37Speaker 5: But all those things you just talked about, you're not
- 1:19:38Speaker 5: gonna get those all in the first pick anyway.
- 1:19:40Speaker 3: But but those things contributes, in my opinion, are more
- 1:19:44Speaker 3: conducive to winning.
- 1:19:45Speaker 5: But all right, so it's one guy, one pick. You
- 1:19:47Speaker 5: know you can only you can only solve one problem.
- 1:19:52Speaker 5: I just wouldn't build.
- 1:19:53Speaker 1: I guess what my point is, if I have my
- 1:19:55Speaker 1: choice and you can't do it this way either, I
- 1:19:58Speaker 1: realize this is flawed. But if I have my choice,
- 1:19:59Speaker 1: what Let's just say that Drake may is number three
- 1:20:03Speaker 1: and he hits he's good. I'm not talking about Patrick Mahomes,
- 1:20:06Speaker 1: but he's really good. I'd rather have that than the
- 1:20:08Speaker 1: best receiver in football.
- 1:20:09Speaker 7: Correct, Yeah, I wish.
- 1:20:11Speaker 1: I even though I think that there's probably a better
- 1:20:14Speaker 1: chance that Marvin Harrison is really good. I think it's
- 1:20:17Speaker 1: way more important because now I can get Drake May
- 1:20:20Speaker 1: and in the third round, Drake May is gonna make
- 1:20:23Speaker 1: somebody better. Maybe the next year I can get a
- 1:20:26Speaker 1: first round wide receiver, you know, because I have Drake
- 1:20:28Speaker 1: May and he's making my offense better. I don't know
- 1:20:31Speaker 1: how much Marvin Harrison makes your offense better if you
- 1:20:34Speaker 1: don't have that situation settled.
- 1:20:37Speaker 3: It's bottom line as as it comes down to winning
- 1:20:39Speaker 3: football games and how much better does Marvin Harrison junior?
- 1:20:43Speaker 3: How many wins does Marvin Harrison Junior ad versus the quarterback?
- 1:20:46Speaker 3: And it's it's just not it's not apples to arm.
- 1:20:50Speaker 5: If you're asking me what position is more important than
- 1:20:52Speaker 5: the NFL, it's.
- 1:20:53Speaker 1: Quarterback, right, And I don't think you're in this situation
- 1:20:56Speaker 1: very often, a top pick in a year that the
- 1:21:01Speaker 1: quarterback position is deep.
- 1:21:02Speaker 5: Yeah, if I feel real good about Drake May, then
- 1:21:04Speaker 5: you picked Drake May if the.
- 1:21:07Speaker 3: Question is always in either or it's Marvin Harrison Junior
- 1:21:10Speaker 3: and Bo Nicks, which is what Dame Brugler marked the
- 1:21:13Speaker 3: mock to the Patriots a couple of weeks ago. Or
- 1:21:15Speaker 3: it's Drake May and Roman Wilson, who just had a
- 1:21:18Speaker 3: great week down at the Senior Bowl, And it's which
- 1:21:21Speaker 3: one do you would you rather?
- 1:21:22Speaker 5: And do you love Drake May? Yes, Okay, then it's
- 1:21:25Speaker 5: Drake May. But what if Drake May and whoever else?
- 1:21:28Speaker 6: Well, what if it's Jade and Daniels or you know,
- 1:21:30Speaker 6: like I mean, I think we all agree. But if
- 1:21:31Speaker 6: it's like I just think about they have a draft
- 1:21:33Speaker 6: board and you always hear them say stick to the board.
- 1:21:36Speaker 6: Now at third overall, is there a good chance that
- 1:21:38Speaker 6: Caleb Williams and Drake May go won two? Who should
- 1:21:40Speaker 6: be the number one guy on their.
- 1:21:41Speaker 5: Board right now?
- 1:21:42Speaker 7: So why shouldn't he be selected? And if you never.
- 1:21:44Speaker 1: Think that Marvin Harrison is substantially better than Jade and Daniels,
- 1:21:48Speaker 1: then you should take Harrison. I agree, Yeah, I wouldn't
- 1:21:51Speaker 1: just take the quarterback for the sake of taking a quarterback.
- 1:21:53Speaker 1: I don't believe in. And that's but can you Imagine
- 1:21:55Speaker 1: if this was like two years ago and the quarterback
- 1:21:59Speaker 1: draft class had Kenny Pickett, who some people thought might
- 1:22:02Speaker 1: be a first round pick, and that was the best
- 1:22:04Speaker 1: on the board, You'd be suicidal right now, right You're
- 1:22:07Speaker 1: not dealing with that. You're dealing with three guys that
- 1:22:10Speaker 1: a lot of people think are going to be the
- 1:22:12Speaker 1: first three picks.
- 1:22:13Speaker 5: Or it could be overrated.
- 1:22:14Speaker 1: No, Fred, there's always a chance. There's always a chance.
- 1:22:17Speaker 1: Last year, three of the top four were quarterbacks. One
- 1:22:21Speaker 1: of them was great, one of them was bad, and
- 1:22:23Speaker 1: one of them got hurt. Like that could happen.
- 1:22:26Speaker 6: But is it which is it fair to say that
- 1:22:27Speaker 6: there are probably two players in this draft class that
- 1:22:29Speaker 6: people are maybe considering his generational players, and it would
- 1:22:32Speaker 6: be Caleb Williams and Marvin Harrison Junior.
- 1:22:35Speaker 1: Like I said, I think that there's a lot of
- 1:22:37Speaker 1: that because of his name, Sure I could, but.
- 1:22:41Speaker 6: I think he's terrific, is a generational So it's just
- 1:22:45Speaker 6: like you know, and after after the last four years,
- 1:22:47Speaker 6: except for you just said, like three years ago, there
- 1:22:49Speaker 6: was a guy who was similarly thought of.
- 1:22:51Speaker 1: So how generational is its? Every year the top wide
- 1:22:54Speaker 1: receiver is like that? Not every year the top quarterbacks
- 1:22:57Speaker 1: after all.
- 1:22:58Speaker 5: These drafts of overthinking it. You know, for some people,
- 1:23:02Speaker 5: it's staring you right in the face.
- 1:23:03Speaker 3: Right, Well, and that's what like he five years ago
- 1:23:06Speaker 3: with Jamar Chase, like we're talking about so it was
- 1:23:09Speaker 3: it was he's drafted in twenty twenty.
- 1:23:11Speaker 1: He's so like, what are we talking? He's played four years?
- 1:23:16Speaker 5: Right?
- 1:23:16Speaker 6: Yeah?
- 1:23:17Speaker 1: So that so that's four years. Okay, that's not generational.
- 1:23:20Speaker 3: I mean then did you like use your whatever you
- 1:23:22Speaker 3: turn justin Jefferson?
- 1:23:24Speaker 1: Know what was he like a year before that? Like,
- 1:23:26Speaker 1: it's not a generational pick quarterback. I go back to
- 1:23:29Speaker 1: Andrew Luck. I haven't seen a prospect like Andrew Luck since.
- 1:23:32Speaker 3: A lot of people would say Trevor Lawrence was on that.
- 1:23:34Speaker 1: Level and he didn't hit right, and he didn't hit
- 1:23:36Speaker 1: He's not to that level, to that level, he's not
- 1:23:39Speaker 1: been that guy. That's my point.
- 1:23:41Speaker 5: I want to take another call. Devlin's been hanging on
- 1:23:43Speaker 5: for a while. He's in Florida. What's up, Devlin James?
- 1:23:46Speaker 9: Yeah, Yeah, what's up?
- 1:23:48Speaker 5: Guys?
- 1:23:49Speaker 13: I just wanted to go to back to Paul's point
- 1:23:51Speaker 13: about coordinators and kind of being a stepping stone or
- 1:23:55Speaker 13: this new England being a stepping stone for coordinators. Don't
- 1:23:59Speaker 13: you think we would need someone that can stay for
- 1:24:01Speaker 13: multiple years if you want to kind of have like
- 1:24:03Speaker 13: an established and run kind of similar to a dynasty.
- 1:24:07Speaker 13: Obviously we can't replicate what Tom Brady did. Yeah, but
- 1:24:11Speaker 13: just try to have a you know.
- 1:24:12Speaker 5: I mean, that's what Paul said in the Best of
- 1:24:14Speaker 5: Both Worlds. He does.
- 1:24:15Speaker 1: Really, I didn't say New England should be a stepping stone.
- 1:24:19Speaker 1: I think the coordinator positions should be stepping stones. I
- 1:24:21Speaker 1: don't care what organization you ran. Now, you should want
- 1:24:24Speaker 1: that guy to build a really good offense or defense
- 1:24:28Speaker 1: as the case may be, and he's generating interest, and
- 1:24:31Speaker 1: then you replace him because you have a system in
- 1:24:34Speaker 1: place and you've said, up, that's what they did in
- 1:24:36Speaker 1: the early two thousands. It was the same. The reason
- 1:24:38Speaker 1: why Tom Brady so effortlessly kept moving on is because
- 1:24:42Speaker 1: it was the same.
- 1:24:42Speaker 6: Offense, right, And that highlights the importance of hiring a
- 1:24:45Speaker 6: good staff that's deep.
- 1:24:47Speaker 1: That's what you want.
- 1:24:48Speaker 6: Hit like Detroit, they're looking at all, right, Ben Johnson's
- 1:24:50Speaker 6: gonna leave.
- 1:24:51Speaker 1: We got a guy waiting, And that's like whatever was
- 1:24:53Speaker 1: talking about, have that succession plan in place, and I
- 1:24:55Speaker 1: think that's what Detroit did.
- 1:24:57Speaker 5: And I gave Bill Belichick a lot of credit over
- 1:24:59Speaker 5: the years for having that structure in place with guys
- 1:25:03Speaker 5: in the waiting, and you know, finally the brain drain
- 1:25:06Speaker 5: caught up to them. All right, Thanks Devin. I got
- 1:25:09Speaker 5: to take care of some business. Do I have to
- 1:25:11Speaker 5: read these? Yeah? I guess so. Hey, Patriots fans, if
