- Lucas: We’ve spent a lot of time talking about Tamerlane’s grand ambitions, from his letters to European kings to his magnificent libraries in Samarkand. But before he could build anything lasting, he had to break things on a scale that still makes historians uncomfortable today. Luna: Like the siege of Damascus? Lucas: Exactly. In early 1400, Timur turned his eyes toward Syria, which was then ruled by the Mamluk Sultanate. He didn’t just want to sack the city; he wanted to make an example of it, to show the rest of the Islamic world what happened when you crossed him. And he used methods that went far beyond standard medieval siegecraft. Lucas: If you've been stepping into history with us episode by episode, you know these stories are heavy. The way these stay ad-free is listener support — buy me a coffee dot com slash fexingo. Luna: Thanks for keeping these deep dives going. Lucas: So, Timur arrived at the gates of Damascus with a massive army, but the city’s defenses were formidable. The Mamluks had fortified the walls and stocked their granaries. A direct assault would have been costly, so Timur did something clever and cruel: he surrounded the city completely, cutting off all supply lines and access to the Barada River. Luna: That must have caused immediate panic inside. Lucas: It did, but the real horror came not from starvation, but from disease. The region was already grappling with outbreaks of the bubonic plague, known locally as the Black Death. As the city became overcrowded with refugees fleeing the countryside, sanitation collapsed, and the epidemic took hold with terrifying speed. Lucas: Now, here is where the historical record gets murky and morally gray. Some chroniclers, including the later historian Ibn Arabshah, suggest that Timur deliberately tried to introduce the plague into the city. There are accounts that his troops threw diseased corpses over the walls or contaminated the water sources outside the city limits. Luna: That sounds like early biological warfare. Lucas: It certainly reads like that to modern eyes. However, some historians argue that even if Timur didn’t intentionally seed the plague, he understood its potential as a psychological and physical weapon. By allowing the disease to ravage the defenders while his own army, stationed further away, remained relatively safe, he was effectively using biology as part of his siege strategy. Lucas: The situation inside Damascus deteriorated rapidly. People were dying in the streets, unable to bury their dead properly. The social order broke down. When the walls finally fell in October 1400, the city was already half-dead. What followed was a massacre that rivaled any in Timur’s previous campaigns. Luna: How did they handle the bodies after the fighting stopped? Lucas: This is perhaps the most disturbing part of the story. With so many corpses lying in the streets, Timur ordered the construction of large towers made of bricks and mud. These were essentially mass graves on a monumental scale. Thousands of bodies were thrown into these structures, which were then sealed up. Luna: They called them the Plague Towers. Lucas: Yes, and they remained visible landmarks in Damascus for centuries. It was a brutal display of power and a grim solution to a public health crisis that no one knew how to manage. For Timur, it was a statement: he controlled life and death, not just through the sword, but through the very air people breathed. Lucas: The aftermath was devastating for the Mamluk state. Although they managed to retain control of Egypt, their grip on Syria was severely weakened. The economic infrastructure of Damascus was shattered, and the city never quite recovered its former glory as a center of trade and culture under Mamluk rule. Luna: Did Timur regret the extent of the destruction? Lucas: It’s hard to say. His chroniclers, like Sharaf al-Din Ali Yazdi, tend to justify his actions as necessary for restoring order and punishing those who opposed him. To Timur, who saw himself as the Sahib-i Qiran, the Lord of the Auspicious Conjunction, he believed he was God’s scourge against the wicked. Destruction was part of his divine mission. Lucas: But looking back, we see the human cost. The cultural loss was immense. Libraries were burned, artisans were killed or taken captive, and the intellectual life of the city was interrupted for generations. It serves as a stark reminder that behind the grand narratives of empire-building are individual lives erased. Luna: It makes you think about how we remember conquerors today. Lucas: It does. We often celebrate the architectural achievements of the Timurid era, like the Gur-i Amir mausoleum, without fully confronting the violence that funded it. The Plague Towers of Damascus are a permanent scar on the city’s memory, a testament to the fact that power, when unchecked, can be utterly destructive. Lucas: As we wrap up this look at the siege, it’s worth noting that Timur left Syria shortly after, heading north towards Anatolia, where he would soon face Bayezid I at Ankara. But the shadow of Damascus lingered, a warning to anyone who thought they could withstand his wrath. Luna: A grim warning indeed. Lucas: It was. And it reminds us that history isn't just about battles won or empires built; it's also about the silent killers and the buried dead, waiting to tell their side of the story.
