- 0:13to the night sky for the week starting August
- 0:16the 10th to the 16th. This week the Perseids
- 0:20peak Mercury returns Jupiter and Venus cozy up
- 0:24and in the second half of our show We turn our
- 0:28noses to the sky and learn what space smells
- 0:32like Whether you're tuning in from the backyard
- 0:35the balcony or just your imagination. I'm glad
- 0:38you're here So find a cozy spot. Let your eyes
- 0:41adjust and let's see what the sky holds for us
- 0:44this week We're coming off the bright and bold
- 0:48sturgeon moon, which peaked just before this
- 0:51week began. That means we start with a waning
- 0:54gibbous, and as each night passes, the moon shrinks
- 0:58and rises later, giving us a little more breathing
- 1:01room for darker skies. By week's end, we'll reach
- 1:05last quarter. This half -moon phase rises around
- 1:09midnight and lingers through the early morning.
- 1:11So while the moon's brightness will wash out
- 1:14the fainter stars and objects for a few nights,
- 1:17conditions improve dramatically midweek for stargazing
- 1:21and meteor hunting. Speaking of meteor showers,
- 1:25this is the one. The Perseids are peaking this
- 1:28week, officially on August 12th and 13th. Normally,
- 1:32this would be a real showstopper with upwards
- 1:35of 100 meteors per hour under ideal conditions.
- 1:39But we've got a problem. The bright waning gibbous
- 1:43moon is going to be hanging out near the radiant
- 1:46point, Perseus, and flooding the sky with light.
- 1:50That doesn't mean you won't see anything, but
- 1:53it will cut the number of visible meteors way
- 1:56down. Expect perhaps a dozen or so per hour,
- 2:00and mostly the brightest ones. Your best bet?
- 2:04Get out during the predawn hours of the 13th,
- 2:07find a spot with a clear view of the sky, and
- 2:10try to block the moon with a building or a tree.
- 2:13And here's a wild card, the Kappa signids. They're
- 2:17a minor shower that also peaks around August
- 2:20the 16th, and while they only deliver a few meteors
- 2:23per hour, they're known for occasional fireballs.
- 2:27If you're out late anyway, it's worth keeping
- 2:29an eye out. Their origins are still a bit mysterious,
- 2:33just the way we like it. Now, let's talk planets,
- 2:37because this week brings one of the prettiest
- 2:40planetary pairings of the year. In the pre -dawn
- 2:43eastern sky, look low near the horizon around
- 2:47August 11th and 12th, and you'll spot Venus and
- 2:50Jupiter just a single degree apart. That's close
- 2:54enough to cover with your fingertip at arm's
- 2:57length. Venus is the brighter of the two, but
- 3:00both will be striking, especially if you're up
- 3:03early. And there's more. Mercury ends its retrograde
- 3:08on August the 11th, and while it's still tricky
- 3:11to see, it's starting to climb back into the
- 3:14dawn. Meanwhile, Saturn rises in the southeast
- 3:17just after midnight and is beautifully placed
- 3:20for telescope viewing by the wee hours. Neptune
- 3:24is hanging around nearby too, but at magnitude
- 3:277 .8, you'll need binoculars or a scope. Still,
- 3:32it's fun to know you're staring at a planet nearly
- 3:343 billion miles away. It's August, so you'll
- 3:39still see the summer triangle this week. Vega,
- 3:42Deneb, and Altair holding court high overhead.
- 3:46But let's talk about some underdogs. First up,
- 3:50Sagitta, the arrow. This one's tiny, just four
- 3:54stars forming a narrow spear below Volpecula,
- 3:58but it punches above its weight in charm. Its
- 4:02brightest star, Gamma Sagittae, is an orange
- 4:05giant that's quietly burning out in the background
- 4:08of the Milky Way. Another one worth your time
- 4:11is Draco, the dragon. It winds its way around
- 4:14the Little Dipper and never really sets for those
- 4:17of us in the Northern Hemisphere. Hidden within
- 4:20its coils is the Cat's Eye Nebula, one of the
- 4:23most complex planetary nebula we know of. If
- 4:27you've got a scope and good skies, go check it
- 4:30out. We've talked about the Ring Nebula before,
- 4:33but what about its louder cousin? Check out the
- 4:36Dumbbell Nebula, also known as Messier 27, hanging
- 4:41out in Volpecula. It's a planetary nebula about
- 4:451200 light years away. formed when a dying star
- 4:48blew off its outer layers. You'll find it nestled
- 4:52within the summer triangle, and it's bright enough
- 4:54to spot with binoculars under dark skies. If
- 4:58you want a challenge, go after the cocoon nebula
- 5:01in Cygnus. It's a beautiful combination of reflection
- 5:05and emission nebula with a dark tail of dust
- 5:08called Bernard 168. That makes it look like a
- 5:13tiny comet with its hair on fire. And, if you
- 5:17have a telescope and a dark, southern horizon,
- 5:20you might just catch a glimpse of the Helix Nebula
- 5:23in Aquarius, sometimes called the Eye of God.
- 5:27It's one of the closest planetary nebula to Earth,
- 5:30and also one of the most haunting. For an added
- 5:34challenge, try finding V Sagittae, a star in
- 5:38the Sagittae constellation I mentioned earlier.
- 5:41It's a binary system destined to merge and explode
- 5:44in a nova sometime around 2083. When it does,
- 5:49it'll briefly rival Sirius in brightness. For
- 5:53now, it's just another humble spec, but you'll
- 5:55be able to say, I saw it before it blew. While
- 6:05you're out watching the Perseids this week, consider
- 6:08this. Back on August 10th, 1972, something extraordinary
- 6:13happened. In broad daylight, a massive fireball
- 6:17streaked across the skies of the western United
- 6:20States and Canada. Not at night, in daylight.
- 6:24It was so bright, it cast shadows. It triggered
- 6:27sonic booms, and it scared the hell out of anyone
- 6:31who happened to be looking up. Known as the Great
- 6:35Daylight Fireball, it entered Earth's atmosphere
- 6:38at a shallow angle, about 35 miles above Utah,
- 6:42and traveled northward at hypersonic speed, eventually
- 6:46exiting back into space somewhere over Alberta.
- 6:50That's right, it didn't burn up, it bounced off
- 6:53our atmosphere like a cosmic skipping stone.
- 6:57Scientists called it an earth -grazing fireball,
- 7:01and this one was big, estimated to be the size
- 7:03of a small car, and moving at nearly 9 miles
- 7:07per second. Had it entered at a steeper angle,
- 7:10it could have struck with the force of a small
- 7:12nuclear device. Instead, it just gave us a show
- 7:16and left behind an eerie contrail that lingered
- 7:19in the sky. The entire event was photographed,
- 7:22filmed, and even tracked by US military satellites.
- 7:27In a time before smartphones, it still managed
- 7:29to go viral, at least by 1972 standards. Before
- 7:34we head on, I want to pause for a moment to remember
- 7:37Commander Jim Lovell, who passed away last week
- 7:41at the age of 97. Lovell flew on Gemini 7, Gemini
- 7:4612, Apollo 8, and of course, Apollo 13. These
- 7:51were missions that carried humanity to new heights
- 7:54and, in one case, brought a crew safely home
- 7:57against staggering odds. He was there for Earth's
- 8:01first journey around the moon, and he was the
- 8:05calm center during Apollo 13's long, dangerous
- 8:08return. His legacy isn't just written in mission
- 8:12logs, it's in the way he showed us that even
- 8:14when things go wrong, ingenuity and teamwork
- 8:17can carry us through. Coming up, astronauts can't
- 8:22take their helmets off to catch a whiff of outer
- 8:25space, but we do know what it smells like. That's
- 8:29after the break. Stay with us. Today I want to
- 8:44talk about something that's just a little out
- 8:46of left field or out of the airlock really Something
- 8:50that you've probably never associated with astronomy.
- 8:54Let's talk about the smell of space and Now I
- 8:58know you're thinking space doesn't have an atmosphere.
- 9:01So how can it have a smell and that is true?
- 9:05Space is a vacuum and a vacuum doesn't carry
- 9:08scent the way air does But if you talk to astronauts,
- 9:12especially those who've done spacewalks outside
- 9:15the International Space Station, they'll tell
- 9:17you otherwise. In fact, some have remarked that
- 9:21when they come back in from the void, their suits,
- 9:24even the airlock, carry a distinct smell. One
- 9:28they often describe as metallic, burnt, like
- 9:31welding fumes, or seared steak, or ozone after
- 9:36a lightning storm. So basically, space stinks.
- 9:41Well, maybe that's a little harsh, but there's
- 9:43definitely a smell. NASA astronauts like Peggy
- 9:47Whitson, Thomas Jones, and Chris Hadfield have
- 9:50all reported it. When the cabin repressurizes
- 9:53and they crack open the hatch, they say there's
- 9:56a unique lingering odor that clings to their
- 9:59suits. Hadfield described it as a rather pleasant
- 10:03metallic sensation. like sweet -smelling welding
- 10:07fumes. Others have likened it to the smell of
- 10:09gunpowder, burnt metal, or a hot engine. One
- 10:13astronaut even said it reminded him of the air
- 10:16after a fireworks display. So what causes it?
- 10:20Although space doesn't have an atmosphere like
- 10:23Earth, it does contain trace elements, free -floating
- 10:26atoms, ions, solar particles, and cosmic dust.
- 10:30Most of the time, they're too sparse to notice,
- 10:33but in certain conditions, especially outside
- 10:36a space station where machinery is exposed to
- 10:38a vacuum, UV radiation, and the solar wind, interesting
- 10:43things happen. One of the main suspects behind
- 10:47the so -called space smell is a group of molecules
- 10:50known as polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons. These
- 10:55are complex carbon -based molecules formed when
- 10:58carbon atoms bond together in ring shapes. You'll
- 11:02find them here on Earth in things like grilled
- 11:04meat, car exhaust, forest fires, and industrial
- 11:08fumes. Basically, anything that's been burned
- 11:12or scorched probably released these hydrocarbons.
- 11:16And, as it turns out, they're pretty common in
- 11:18space too, especially in places where stars are
- 11:22forming or dying. So when an astronaut goes for
- 11:25a spacewalk, their suit gets bombarded by high
- 11:29-energy particles. The materials of the suit
- 11:32and the station itself interact with oxygen and
- 11:35ultraviolet radiation, triggering subtle chemical
- 11:38changes. When they return inside, the sudden
- 11:41reintroduction of air allows these altered particles
- 11:45to react, and that's when the smell kicks in.
- 11:49It's not space itself that has a scent. It's
- 11:52what space does to the things we send into it.
- 11:56Now, let's take a deeper look or smell. These
- 11:59aromatic hydrocarbons I mentioned, they are found
- 12:02in vast clouds of gas and dust throughout the
- 12:06galaxy. In fact, when we peer into the nebula
- 12:09with space telescopes like the James Webb or
- 12:12the old Spitzer infrared telescope, we often
- 12:15detect these hydrocarbons by the light they emit.
- 12:18These molecules are ancient. Some scientists
- 12:22believe that they could have played a role in
- 12:24the origin of life on Earth. They're carbon rich,
- 12:28complex, and durable. Three things that life
- 12:32tends to like. So when astronauts say space smells
- 12:36like burnt steak or welding fumes, they're literally
- 12:40catching a whiff of star stuff. Cooked carbon.
- 12:44the chemical echoes of dying stars and expanding
- 12:48galaxies, its cosmic perfume. And speaking of
- 12:52perfume, NASA actually commissioned a chemist
- 12:55and a perfumer named Steve Pearce to recreate
- 12:59the smell of space back in the early 2000s. They
- 13:02wanted to use it in astronaut training simulations,
- 13:05so space rookies wouldn't be surprised when that
- 13:08burnt metal smell hit them post -EVA. Pierce
- 13:12worked with astronaut reports and chemical analysis
- 13:15to design a fragrance that mimicked the effect.
- 13:19He even worked on a scent profile for the moon.
- 13:22It was something like spent gunpowder mixed with
- 13:25dust and dry minerals, as described by Apollo
- 13:29astronauts. Years later, these scents were released
- 13:33commercially in limited fashion under names like
- 13:36Ode to Space and Moon Smell. I'd caution against
- 13:41trying these as date night fragrances unless
- 13:44your date is into planetary science, in which
- 13:47case you've probably hit the jackpot. While we
- 13:50think of the universe as cold, empty, and silent,
- 13:53it's also textured, tangible, and even aromatic.
- 13:57We tend to think of smell as something grounded
- 14:00and earthly, baking bread, fresh rain. hot asphalt,
- 14:05but space has its own language of scent through
- 14:08the chemistry of combustion and radiation and
- 14:11through the invisible fingerprints of molecules
- 14:14drifting across the cosmos. Space may not smell
- 14:18like roses, but it smells like creation. If the
