- 0:04Speaker 1: Mark Marquez sealed his ninth world title, Peger Banoya finally
- 0:08Speaker 1: remembered what the top step feels like, and Juan Mayn
- 0:10Speaker 1: Honda not only finished a race, but actually landed on
- 0:14Speaker 1: the podium. Yes, folks, miracles do happen in Moto GP.
- 0:18Speaker 1: Pit Talk is proudly sponsored by Shannon's Insurance. I'm your host,
- 0:21Speaker 1: Rinita Vanmulan. Alongside me is the statman, mister Matt Clayton.
- 0:27Speaker 1: But today we've got a very special guest. He's one
- 0:31Speaker 1: half of the Oxley Bomb Podcast, Championship winning data technician
- 0:34Speaker 1: and crew chief turned journalist Extraordinary. I hope I've given
- 0:38Speaker 1: you enough of an intro with that, Ladies and gentlemen,
- 0:42Speaker 1: Peter Bomb. Peter, welcome to the Fox Sports Pit Talk Podcast.
- 0:47Speaker 2: Well, thanks, Anita, you really made an there. I don't
- 0:50Speaker 2: know how to bag that out, but no, thanks, thanks,
- 0:52Speaker 2: happy to be here with you guys and Rinda.
- 0:55Speaker 3: I thought the funny part about your intro was when
- 0:57Speaker 3: you said Juan Mirron miracle. I thought you were going
- 1:00Speaker 3: with the pun headline there that he was actually on
- 1:02Speaker 3: the podium, So it was an unintentional comedy with the
- 1:05Speaker 3: Miracle Podium version one in Japan, But there you go.
- 1:08Speaker 3: I thought that was intentional, but maybe not.
- 1:10Speaker 1: Well oh well, I mean, look, I don't know about
- 1:12Speaker 1: you guys, but when I saw obviously marketing the Championship
- 1:15Speaker 1: Pecker out front, there was the smoke, there was the drama,
- 1:17Speaker 1: and then all of a sudden, it's a Honda Andersjuan
- 1:19Speaker 1: Mere and he's on the podium. I was like, really,
- 1:23Speaker 1: what are we living in right now, because this is
- 1:25Speaker 1: not on my twenty twenty five bing go card at all.
- 1:27Speaker 1: And Matt, I know it wasn't on yours either.
- 1:30Speaker 3: No, definitely not. You know, it's it's been a long
- 1:33Speaker 3: time since someone's been on a podium where you're thumbing
- 1:35Speaker 3: through several pages going hang on, was it twenty twenty three? No,
- 1:39Speaker 3: it was tweet that was twenty one, and you're going
- 1:41Speaker 3: back so far to the Suzuki days at the end
- 1:44Speaker 3: of twenty twenty one. It really has been that long.
- 1:46Speaker 3: But one of those weird ones in that you would
- 1:49Speaker 3: have thought at the start of this season if he
- 1:50Speaker 3: was going to end up on a podium it was
- 1:51Speaker 3: because it rained or everyone crashed or had technicals or
- 1:54Speaker 3: what have you. But it was completely on merit and
- 1:57Speaker 3: looked pretty convincing to me. But I'm sure we'll get
- 1:59Speaker 3: onto that in the next thirty to forty five minutes
- 2:01Speaker 3: or so.
- 2:02Speaker 1: Definitely, I think obviously the major talking point Mark Marquez, like,
- 2:08Speaker 1: what can you say about it? Is one of the
- 2:10Speaker 1: best comebacks that we've seen in sport, Matt. We've spoken
- 2:13Speaker 1: about it on previous episodes. It's like comparing Michael Jordan
- 2:17Speaker 1: coming back and then the fact that we have two
- 2:20Speaker 1: brothers and the top one into in the championship. Compare
- 2:22Speaker 1: that to like Venus and Serena, Like, we're witnessing something
- 2:26Speaker 1: that we're probably only gonna witness once in our lifetime.
- 2:29Speaker 1: But that's the entertainment side of it. Put Away, Peter,
- 2:34Speaker 1: I want to hear from you something we've spoke about.
- 2:37Speaker 1: Matt wrote an article for Fox Sports about is this
- 2:40Speaker 1: his best championship that he's ever won? What's your thoughts
- 2:45Speaker 1: on this year? Is it Mark being on the best
- 2:47Speaker 1: bike or is it No, We're really witnessing greatness here.
- 2:52Speaker 2: The stars out aligned. It was bound to become a
- 2:55Speaker 2: championship and not as convincing as this one.
- 2:57Speaker 4: If it's his best year. Ah gee.
- 3:02Speaker 2: I was hugely, hugely impressed with Mark when he jumped
- 3:05Speaker 2: from the one to five on the Motor two and
- 3:07Speaker 2: only the second year that Motor two existed and should
- 3:10Speaker 2: have won the championship. It was Mark again, he being
- 3:14Speaker 2: his own biggest problem every now and then and showing
- 3:17Speaker 2: it away. I mean, lucky for me because my rider
- 3:19Speaker 2: we became world champion, but we have to be honest
- 3:22Speaker 2: that it was really because he went completely mental too
- 3:25Speaker 2: many times and then couldn't even see strade anymore and
- 3:27Speaker 2: decided okay, showing the towel for today. That was very impressive.
- 3:31Speaker 2: Next year, obviously he claimed the title like it was
- 3:34Speaker 2: a walkover. Then he goes to Motor gip immediately wins
- 3:36Speaker 2: the championship. Man, you were hard posh to choose whone
- 3:40Speaker 2: was more special. But the Mark for now is a
- 3:43Speaker 2: change character. He is a change wrider and that helped
- 3:47Speaker 2: him a lot, a lot. He needed to calm down
- 3:52Speaker 2: a little bit. He survived all his madness and then
- 3:56Speaker 2: being over thirty, riders changed. I used to say every
- 4:00Speaker 2: year after thirty that your competitive is a given year,
- 4:03Speaker 2: don't count on it. But nowadays riders some riders, especially
- 4:08Speaker 2: the intelligence riders, have a longer life span, long longer
- 4:12Speaker 2: window that they that they can be on top of
- 4:14Speaker 2: things because the game has become so complicated that you
- 4:17Speaker 2: can compensate more than before with your experience once you're
- 4:21Speaker 2: over thirty. So he's thirty two. He used to be
- 4:24Speaker 2: the youngest kid on the in the media center, in
- 4:26Speaker 2: the press room, but now he's usually the oldest guy
- 4:29Speaker 2: on the on the on the press conference. But this year,
- 4:33Speaker 2: I don't know about you, guys, I enjoyed it hugely,
- 4:36Speaker 2: although before the first race we were already not sure,
- 4:39Speaker 2: but pretty sure that championships is. It's just a matter
- 4:42Speaker 2: of how long it's going to take. But I enjoyed
- 4:44Speaker 2: it hugely. And you have to tell me if you
- 4:48Speaker 2: if it sounds familiar to you, But I love seeing
- 4:50Speaker 2: greatness in action. If there was another guy winning all
- 4:54Speaker 2: the races coming in. Every year we have a champion,
- 4:56Speaker 2: and not always they win as convincingly as this one,
- 4:58Speaker 2: but some of the years have been maybe in nomals wise,
- 5:02Speaker 2: it's easy or normal wise more interesting, but I found
- 5:06Speaker 2: this usually interesting to see somebody doing such clever intelligence
- 5:10Speaker 2: wise and also amazing things on a motorbike at the
- 5:13Speaker 2: right moment of the weekend, in the right session, through
- 5:15Speaker 2: the right either every everything was super high level. That's
- 5:19Speaker 2: what's this is so so interesting to watch. But yeah,
- 5:22Speaker 2: point wise, it was not. It was not a very
- 5:25Speaker 2: difficult to prediction from the World champing.
- 5:29Speaker 3: Yeah, you made an interesting point there, Peter, in that
- 5:31Speaker 3: you you mentioned, you know, watching greatness or watching perfection
- 5:35Speaker 3: is intoxicating to watch, but you combine that with a
- 5:38Speaker 3: nostalgic element too, and that's what's been them such the
- 5:41Speaker 3: interesting part about this and that you know, you mentioned
- 5:43Speaker 3: when he won that first verto GP World Championship, it's
- 5:46Speaker 3: twelve years ago. We've not seen a career like this,
- 5:49Speaker 3: and we probably didn't think we didn't think that we
- 5:52Speaker 3: were going to see a second act of this career
- 5:54Speaker 3: because of what had happened in twenty twenty and the
- 5:57Speaker 3: amount of time is between twenty and twenty and now
- 5:59Speaker 3: that this didn't seem possible. You're watching the perfection element.
- 6:03Speaker 3: You're watching a maybe a different rider with the same name,
- 6:07Speaker 3: and that he's achieving these championships but doing it maybe
- 6:09Speaker 3: differently to the way he did it in the past.
- 6:11Speaker 3: But there's also this nostalgic element about it in that
- 6:14Speaker 3: the three that I've likened it too in other sports,
- 6:18Speaker 3: I'm old enough and have another exports experience. I covered
- 6:21Speaker 3: the Michael Jordan years, so I saw the gap between
- 6:25Speaker 3: the two Jordan eras and how he was a different
- 6:27Speaker 3: basketball player with the same name and played the game very,
- 6:30Speaker 3: very differently in the second stint that he had. And
- 6:32Speaker 3: the other two ones for me Monica Sellis whose career
- 6:36Speaker 3: was obviously cut short because of a horrible act and
- 6:39Speaker 3: then came back in one Grand Slams as an older player,
- 6:42Speaker 3: and the other one is Tiger Woods because of just
- 6:43Speaker 3: the sheer gap between the big successes that he had,
- 6:46Speaker 3: and he had a few self inflicted wounds as well.
- 6:49Speaker 4: But you combine.
- 6:50Speaker 3: Greatness and nostalgia, it makes it pretty interesting. And your point, then,
- 6:54Speaker 3: if you know anyone else, if Pecko had a season
- 6:57Speaker 3: like this here Jojey Martin was fit enough to have
- 6:59Speaker 3: a season like this, If anyone had had a season
- 7:01Speaker 3: like this, I don't think we would be remembering Dominance
- 7:04Speaker 3: as fondly as this now. If he goes and does
- 7:07Speaker 3: this again in twenty twenty six, maybe we're not going
- 7:09Speaker 3: to be as enthusiastic about it because we've already seen that. Yeah,
- 7:12Speaker 3: but we've seen the fairy tale story before. We might
- 7:14Speaker 3: be having a very very different podcast chat any year
- 7:16Speaker 3: from now. But to my mind, because of what he'd
- 7:21Speaker 3: gone through to get back to the top, I think
- 7:23Speaker 3: that makes this one a little bit more special. Not
- 7:26Speaker 3: difficult because he was in control the whole way through,
- 7:29Speaker 3: but the fact that he's now the second oldest rider
- 7:31Speaker 3: on the grid and he was able to come back
- 7:33Speaker 3: and do this, I think this is what makes this one.
- 7:36Speaker 3: We'll look back at it and go, wow, that really
- 7:38Speaker 3: was something pretty special. Irrespective of the fact that he
- 7:40Speaker 3: was clear on the you know, he was the best
- 7:42Speaker 3: rider on the best bike at the time.
- 7:44Speaker 2: Even the best bike well maybe Notti, I mean, don't
- 7:50Speaker 2: even think. Yeah, definitely not the best bike on the
- 7:53Speaker 2: two riders on the twenty twenty five Cutties. That's pretty still.
- 7:58Speaker 2: I have to talk about back at some point in
- 7:59Speaker 2: this podcast.
- 8:00Speaker 4: You want to do a now a lot, Yeah, let's
- 8:02Speaker 4: do it.
- 8:03Speaker 1: Just go with what Okay, first of all, what happened
- 8:07Speaker 1: this weekend? How did he all of a sudden just
- 8:09Speaker 1: revert to this old pecker? What did they change? And
- 8:11Speaker 1: then also explain the smoke and everything that was happening
- 8:15Speaker 1: to during the race.
- 8:16Speaker 4: Oh yeah, that's that's the other.
- 8:17Speaker 2: I mean, there was so many storylines in last weekend,
- 8:20Speaker 2: in last sum you can't make that up, you know,
- 8:22Speaker 2: Like we said that, there's yeah, every almost every ride
- 8:25Speaker 2: everything that there's something special there. Let's first get back. Obviously,
- 8:29Speaker 2: you guys are so read. Everybody wanted to know what
- 8:32Speaker 2: changed on Peckers back. We don't know, so I'm not
- 8:37Speaker 2: claiming that I know, but all I can say it's
- 8:41Speaker 2: either illegal or it's really really late, And obviously I
- 8:45Speaker 2: go for the last thing. It is really fucking late.
- 8:49Speaker 2: You can't do that. Oh this brings me. It must
- 8:53Speaker 2: be legal. It must be legal. It's probably the whole
- 8:55Speaker 2: twenty twenty four bike, which they were telling us all
- 8:58Speaker 2: the time it's not possible. So when they say it
- 9:00Speaker 2: was not possible, we, like some of the insiders concluded
- 9:05Speaker 2: that the twenty twenty five engine has probably different engine
- 9:08Speaker 2: mounts than doesn't fit in the frame. But you have
- 9:10Speaker 2: your engine homologated, not your Sashi, and you're dead. But
- 9:13Speaker 2: maybe it wasn't like that. The thing that makes me
- 9:16Speaker 2: think it is probably complete twenty twenty four, or it
- 9:19Speaker 2: has the main thing that made it twenty twenty four
- 9:21Speaker 2: different from twenty twenty five, which is the whole right
- 9:24Speaker 2: high device construction.
- 9:26Speaker 4: What makes it plausible is.
- 9:27Speaker 2: That Gigidlingya rules to Cuttikosa in a near perfect way.
- 9:33Speaker 2: But it also means he has to be very very straight,
- 9:36Speaker 2: black and white and probably even rootless withits his riders.
- 9:39Speaker 4: Every now and then you can't ninety percent of the riders.
- 9:42Speaker 2: You can't follow them all the time in their wishes,
- 9:45Speaker 2: their commands, their feelings. I missed that feedback. You can't
- 9:47Speaker 2: do that all the time. We are in an area
- 9:50Speaker 2: where computers say no on motorgip. Unfortunately, it's it's getting there.
- 9:56Speaker 2: So if they did all the mouths and all the
- 9:57Speaker 2: calculations and the twenty twenty five, in all all the
- 10:00Speaker 2: simulations they were running, is better on every seventy twenty
- 10:03Speaker 2: twenty four. Then if you're at Yamaha or in Aprelia
- 10:07Speaker 2: and you don't like it, you go back. But when
- 10:09Speaker 2: you're in Gigi's team, when you're in Dukati, which has
- 10:12Speaker 2: a lot of response, I mean, the whole weight of
- 10:14Speaker 2: Italy is on the shoulders of Gigi basically so if
- 10:17Speaker 2: something you and also it brought him where he is
- 10:22Speaker 2: by being really firm every now and then. There is
- 10:25Speaker 2: a similarity with Lorenzo when he.
- 10:27Speaker 4: Was a Ducati.
- 10:28Speaker 2: Yes, that's an interesting story, and it took way too
- 10:31Speaker 2: long and finally clicked, and apparently it was like the
- 10:35Speaker 2: support from the fuel tank, which in a way horror.
- 10:38Speaker 2: Lorenzo started to introduce them because, let's be honest, wasn't fit.
- 10:42Speaker 2: He hated training. He wasn't yes, and the forces you
- 10:45Speaker 2: got on these bikes nowadays are huge, so you need
- 10:47Speaker 2: to train. Has it didn't train, so he wanted more
- 10:51Speaker 2: support from the fuel tank to not get you know,
- 10:53Speaker 2: pushed over the deshbots of his bike when he was
- 10:55Speaker 2: breaking and by finding the right playing a lot with
- 10:58Speaker 2: trying to find the bike the best position on the bike.
- 11:01Speaker 2: He didn't gain a lot initially, but in the end
- 11:04Speaker 2: when everything clicked, he claimed it was that and Chig
- 11:06Speaker 2: hated it. You cannot pitch Gig more often saying that
- 11:10Speaker 2: was the sea support from the Dugatti that brought horror.
- 11:12Speaker 2: I mean there was a lot of stretching in Dugatti
- 11:14Speaker 2: at that time. Chiji brought Lorenzo and they never had
- 11:16Speaker 2: it ride as expensive as horror. Lorenzo it was a big,
- 11:19Speaker 2: big risk, and he didn't perform, so that there was pressure, there,
- 11:23Speaker 2: a lot of pressure. He started to perform just one
- 11:27Speaker 2: two weeks too late, and then the damage was already
- 11:29Speaker 2: done because like the famous Ben Bostrom told me once
- 11:32Speaker 2: when I was one year with him and he was
- 11:34Speaker 2: effectively cutted to gut the superbike ride, he said, well,
- 11:37Speaker 2: when you disappoint them, you really disappoint them. Italian team
- 11:42Speaker 2: Dugutti there is no hanging around. So so it has
- 11:46Speaker 2: some similarities with the situation that Lorenzo. It also didn't
- 11:50Speaker 2: got for quite some time. What do you wanted? Because
- 11:52Speaker 2: Chigi or his team of engineers believe that's not the
- 11:55Speaker 2: way to go.
- 11:56Speaker 4: All the other Dugatti don't have that.
- 11:58Speaker 2: You don't you want something that's out of the cu oppilations,
- 12:00Speaker 2: out of the norm too far, we don't get that,
- 12:02Speaker 2: And I think it's something like that that must have
- 12:05Speaker 2: happened here because he's most angry as well.
- 12:07Speaker 4: Back away he didn't well.
- 12:08Speaker 3: Yeah, that was interesting when he said after the race,
- 12:11Speaker 3: I'm happy and I'm angry, and you could see that
- 12:14Speaker 3: coming through. But Peter pick up on something you just
- 12:16Speaker 3: said then that you said that it's late. That was
- 12:18Speaker 3: the word that came out there. So is this because
- 12:20Speaker 3: there's some sort of tugger war with Pecko saying I
- 12:24Speaker 3: need this and do catty because of Gigi are just
- 12:26Speaker 3: being stubborn and saying, no, you've got this. You know,
- 12:29Speaker 3: computer says it's better, all the testing says it's better.
- 12:32Speaker 3: And so has it come to a point where Pecko's
- 12:34Speaker 3: almost broken them down and they've relented to what it
- 12:37Speaker 3: is that he wants. Or is there a psychological element
- 12:41Speaker 3: to this because Pecko, you know, we've described Peko as
- 12:44Speaker 3: a precision instrument on this podcast before. When Pecko has
- 12:48Speaker 3: things exactly the way he wants them, he can ride
- 12:50Speaker 3: races like he did last weekend at Motegi. It's round seventeen.
- 12:53Speaker 3: It's taken us so long to get to this point.
- 12:56Speaker 3: So is this Gigi relenting and giving Pecko what he
- 12:59Speaker 3: wants or or they just thrown their hands in the
- 13:01Speaker 3: air and said, we can't change any more things on
- 13:04Speaker 3: this now. We're just going to give you something that
- 13:07Speaker 3: you're comfortable with to see if that makes the difference.
- 13:10Speaker 3: So this to become a is it a psychological issue
- 13:13Speaker 3: for Bagna or is it a physical issue with the
- 13:16Speaker 3: bike that he's riding, Because that's a different answer for
- 13:18Speaker 3: every rider. I wonder if it's more in Peco's head
- 13:20Speaker 3: than anything else.
- 13:22Speaker 2: No, it's not more in his head. You can't make
- 13:24Speaker 2: that step in your hat. So whether what did push
- 13:28Speaker 2: Jiji to finally give backo something that.
- 13:36Speaker 4: Was bah what?
- 13:40Speaker 2: I really think he is more or less on the
- 13:41Speaker 2: twenty twenty four bike now it must be legal in
- 13:45Speaker 2: any way. So technicians, especially of his level and his ego,
- 13:50Speaker 2: don't like to go back to all the things. They
- 13:52Speaker 2: make a new bike that's better, so we forget about
- 13:55Speaker 2: the old bike. And it happens before many many times
- 13:59Speaker 2: that the new bike wasn't better. But usually that's not
- 14:01Speaker 2: a drama. In the really old years, especially Honda, I
- 14:04Speaker 2: had a tendency to do that. Honda loved to make
- 14:07Speaker 2: a new bike every complete year because it was like we,
- 14:11Speaker 2: even if the bike was already winning everything, we need
- 14:13Speaker 2: to make a new bike every year to train our
- 14:15Speaker 2: engineers to keep a sharp So it has happened a
- 14:18Speaker 2: couple of times, especially in home does case in the
- 14:20Speaker 2: five hundred Shega times that he needed to go back
- 14:22Speaker 2: to the literally the museum or the entrance from from
- 14:24Speaker 2: the headquarters, to go back to the last year's back
- 14:27Speaker 2: and finally start winning again because the new bike was
- 14:28Speaker 2: totally crapped. Now, if you're on another, if you're on
- 14:32Speaker 2: Yamaha and Aelia as an example of KTM, and something
- 14:34Speaker 2: doesn't work, you go immediately back. It's not even a
- 14:37Speaker 2: five minute discussion with Chichi came pretty far by believing
- 14:41Speaker 2: his numbers and his calculations and any similar. He got
- 14:44Speaker 2: pretty pretty fucking far with that. Now, it's the only
- 14:47Speaker 2: I think twenty twenty three was not better than in
- 14:49Speaker 2: twenty twenty two, because twenty five is not better than
- 14:52Speaker 2: twenty twenty four. So you don't want to you don't
- 14:54Speaker 2: want to go back. You don't want to do that
- 14:56Speaker 2: because it really is. It hurts because everybody he knows
- 15:00Speaker 2: except you and me at the moment, we will all
- 15:02Speaker 2: hear it at some point. But that that's that that
- 15:05Speaker 2: must have heard for Gigi to go back to something
- 15:07Speaker 2: that that was and then yeah, Pecko, immediately, I mean everything,
- 15:11Speaker 2: the pole position, to sprint the whole race, there is
- 15:16Speaker 2: a little you have to stop. I'm not I don't
- 15:20Speaker 2: know the English word. I'm I'm not too over Antisa
- 15:23Speaker 2: yet that he is completely back and maybe even can
- 15:25Speaker 2: challenge Mirke because this is.
- 15:26Speaker 4: A very very special track.
- 15:27Speaker 2: On this track, everything worked and it's only competitive or
- 15:31Speaker 2: only two competitors. Mark was just having one thing on
- 15:33Speaker 2: his mind, getting the championship done and dusted, and Alex
- 15:36Speaker 2: was having a complete off weekend.
- 15:37Speaker 4: Because this track is special.
- 15:40Speaker 2: So what works on this track is not automatically work
- 15:43Speaker 2: on your track, for example, total opposite, total opposite. But
- 15:47Speaker 2: somehow it's too convincing, it's too much of a different
- 15:50Speaker 2: Pecko is back, but where he is back, I mean
- 15:54Speaker 2: the beginning of the year he was finishing third, third, third,
- 15:56Speaker 2: maybe one second, third, third, fifth, that was it, and
- 15:58Speaker 2: then he started to really follow the cliff. Whether he's
- 16:01Speaker 2: back to third or even can be second and maybe
- 16:04Speaker 2: close to Mark. I'm keen to wait for the next
- 16:07Speaker 2: week to see what was coming up.
- 16:10Speaker 1: You said that the track was special, and then that
- 16:13Speaker 1: makes me think, you know, we saw the hondas strong here.
- 16:16Speaker 1: We know it's the Honda test track. Is that why
- 16:19Speaker 1: Juan does this circuit just seem to suit him in
- 16:21Speaker 1: his riding style.
- 16:24Speaker 4: Yes, but there will be too much. That will be
- 16:27Speaker 4: too easy to say that.
- 16:28Speaker 2: You have to put praise on Hondaw a little bit
- 16:31Speaker 2: more and on Joah Mehd too. I mean, I have
- 16:34Speaker 2: to be careful to choose my words here because I
- 16:35Speaker 2: was going to say I don't rate Mayor a lot.
- 16:37Speaker 2: That's that's pretty hard from because honestly, in a way
- 16:41Speaker 2: he's far from a complete rider. But what is good
- 16:44Speaker 2: from Joe a mehre and that's why he That's why
- 16:46Speaker 2: Honda at the moment has a super team on the
- 16:49Speaker 2: Repsos side. Even if they don't win any championship, they
- 16:51Speaker 2: got a guy you can develop a bike with. I
- 16:54Speaker 2: love listening to lu Combrini even when he finished twenty,
- 16:56Speaker 2: sometimes even more when he finished twenty. You get the
- 16:58Speaker 2: whole depri if you get the Youngervaralentine or Roshi unbelievable
- 17:01Speaker 2: clear explaining how everything.
- 17:03Speaker 4: Worked, what did you do?
- 17:04Speaker 2: And then you got Joe on Mehroud basically has no idea,
- 17:07Speaker 2: I think, but when you put something under his ass
- 17:09Speaker 2: that works, he will open the total. He will, no doubt.
- 17:12Speaker 2: So Honda arrived with the base setting that was immediately there.
- 17:15Speaker 2: From Friday morning on, they were there moteg is very
- 17:18Speaker 2: specially if you're on Friday morning not there, there is
- 17:21Speaker 2: seventy percent you're not going to be there all weekend.
- 17:23Speaker 2: You don't make that up over night. It's such a
- 17:25Speaker 2: special track. So the Hondow came with a good base setting.
- 17:29Speaker 2: That says something about the home that there were three
- 17:31Speaker 2: Homedows in the top ten inchally as Harko was going
- 17:33Speaker 2: for the good result as well, Marini had some troubles
- 17:36Speaker 2: had to come in. But already, I mean stuff happened
- 17:38Speaker 2: at the start always in motaken that had an influence.
- 17:41Speaker 2: But the Hondos are there, they are there, are there
- 17:43Speaker 2: on this kind of track. But it also means that
- 17:46Speaker 2: the Home does still has a lot of the old
- 17:48Speaker 2: DNA in it, meaning it's very nimble. You can flick
- 17:51Speaker 2: it really late completely on its side and do a
- 17:54Speaker 2: lot of turning on low speed, but fast corners, long
- 17:57Speaker 2: heart acceleration with banking not so sure that they still
- 18:00Speaker 2: have like a relatively old school motorbike. When like when
- 18:04Speaker 2: Mark Arquez was was riding the HOMEBA, it was a
- 18:06Speaker 2: complete different end was like a fast motor two super
- 18:08Speaker 2: fast more the two with a turbo on it and
- 18:11Speaker 2: motajped bikes now are boring. Let's be honest. The way
- 18:13Speaker 2: that Mark what Mark did was last year I learned
- 18:16Speaker 2: to ride an unnatural motorbike, learned to ride a half
- 18:19Speaker 2: form of one car with two.
- 18:20Speaker 4: Wheels because it looks boring.
- 18:21Speaker 2: Every time he lost his temple last year and tried
- 18:24Speaker 2: to push again, he was either slow or crashing or bolts.
- 18:27Speaker 2: So we really learned to ride a Dukatti who says
- 18:30Speaker 2: two wheels on the ground, no spectacular, mostly in line,
- 18:33Speaker 2: not spectacular at all, but that's the way to go
- 18:35Speaker 2: fast at the Gatti on his age. Learning to ride
- 18:37Speaker 2: a complete new motorbike is already something John hasn't hasn't
- 18:42Speaker 2: done that yet. He's still on a bike that is
- 18:45Speaker 2: like like a KTM a little bit.
- 18:47Speaker 4: I love them.
- 18:48Speaker 2: I love to see a KTM at Honda being fast
- 18:50Speaker 2: because you see somebody fast. I actually I was watching
- 18:53Speaker 2: the race alone, but if I wasn't alone, I would
- 18:55Speaker 2: have bet with the other guy in the room. Mirror
- 18:58Speaker 2: is not going to finish the race because the first
- 19:00Speaker 2: four or five laps, every lap two times he was
- 19:02Speaker 2: out of the sheet harv or out of line.
- 19:04Speaker 4: But that's the way to be fast.
- 19:05Speaker 2: To be to Honda. I love it, but unfortunately it's
- 19:07Speaker 2: a desided dinosaurs from what you at the moment.
- 19:10Speaker 3: Yeah, yeah, every time he every time he came down
- 19:13Speaker 3: the end of the back straight there intoternal avenue, just
- 19:15Speaker 3: go you sort of stand back from the screen a
- 19:17Speaker 3: little bit. It's like, oh boy, he's definitely coming off there.
- 19:19Speaker 3: But that point that you mentioned before was so interesting
- 19:22Speaker 3: in that they have almost sort of inadvertently stumbled across
- 19:25Speaker 3: a really good lineup for where Honda sits in the
- 19:28Speaker 3: pecking order at the moment, because Marini will explain why
- 19:31Speaker 3: things do and don't work, and Mia is going to
- 19:34Speaker 3: try harder than just about anybody else. So you're going
- 19:36Speaker 3: to find the limits of what it is that Lucas
- 19:38Speaker 3: says does and doesn't work, because Mea is either going
- 19:41Speaker 3: to finish on a podium occasionally or he's going to
- 19:43Speaker 3: crash a lot, and that tends to be the way
- 19:45Speaker 3: those two riders roll. But Peter, the interesting thing for
- 19:47Speaker 3: me is that if Honda, we used to talk about
- 19:51Speaker 3: Honda and Yamaha sort of being on the same plane
- 19:53Speaker 3: and that they were down the back. It was the
- 19:54Speaker 3: Japanese Cup and that sort of stuff. Honda has kicked
- 19:57Speaker 3: clear this year of Yamaha, and we'll probably get into
- 19:59Speaker 3: Yama a bit later on, but it's getting to the point.
- 20:02Speaker 3: It's getting to the point now where Honda, if Honda's
- 20:05Speaker 3: going to take that next step, you would suggest there's
- 20:08Speaker 3: going to have to be another rider other than Marini
- 20:11Speaker 3: or Mia to help them take the next step, because
- 20:13Speaker 3: they don't have that a lister. And that's where you
- 20:16Speaker 3: wonder who's going to shake who's going to shake free
- 20:19Speaker 3: for twenty twenty seven, and who's going to take an
- 20:23Speaker 3: educated gamble to try and be at that place as
- 20:26Speaker 3: it rises up at the right time to take the
- 20:28Speaker 3: benefit of what these two guys bring. It's a really
- 20:30Speaker 3: interesting little subplot for next year.
- 20:32Speaker 2: I think, just speaking about all the rooms for next year,
- 20:36Speaker 2: where's the monitor right that they're going to get on
- 20:37Speaker 2: their back. They have the perfect riders for where they
- 20:41Speaker 2: are now, but not to become world champion. Yeah, correct,
- 20:44Speaker 2: we need a little more aliens because if you don't
- 20:46Speaker 2: have enough to get any manufacturer at least one, yes
- 20:50Speaker 2: are It's an interesting situation. But cerdainly, I Meanzeki doesn't
- 20:54Speaker 2: suddenly turn an alien. Horra Matin was never an alien,
- 20:57Speaker 2: but I rated him higher. But I'm drifting away for
- 21:00Speaker 2: and what I want to say, Yama has Harvey Quadrado.
- 21:02Speaker 2: That is for me, it's a full full alien on
- 21:05Speaker 2: the sort of let go because they are too deep
- 21:07Speaker 2: in the ship to to even can use an alien.
- 21:09Speaker 2: They would only demoralize him. But they're looking now on
- 21:12Speaker 2: the on the on the Motor two and on other
- 21:14Speaker 2: especially Motor two guys. And you look for a guy
- 21:16Speaker 2: that shows enough of the signs from being special that
- 21:20Speaker 2: not necessarily the guy that wins everything in a row.
- 21:23Speaker 2: I mean, would be quite handy if your Muto two winner,
- 21:25Speaker 2: But it depends on more things in your character and
- 21:29Speaker 2: and your family, your friends, your background, especially how you
- 21:33Speaker 2: came here and how you work with your crew the way.
- 21:36Speaker 2: I had an interview with Akiio when Sapang earlier this
- 21:38Speaker 2: year about the steps from Motor three, from European Championship
- 21:42Speaker 2: to Motor three to Multitude to moltigip what you look for,
- 21:44Speaker 2: because you know you have to speak to Akiyo. He
- 21:46Speaker 2: knows everything, and he said, we we look, we look obviously,
- 21:51Speaker 2: we look at the results. You've got to be a
- 21:52Speaker 2: bit special for your age. Already very young. But then
- 21:55Speaker 2: we start to look at everything around it, he said, honestly, Peter,
- 21:59Speaker 2: but we paid it of aa costa. We barely speak
- 22:03Speaker 2: about the bike. He does a couple of many bit
- 22:04Speaker 2: poult travata, and then the other guy's about the bikes.
- 22:07Speaker 2: But we have more work at the moment to pay
- 22:08Speaker 2: the costa. Keeping his head straight, keeping him normal, keeping
- 22:11Speaker 2: his feet on the ground. You're protecting him from all
- 22:14Speaker 2: weird influences from managers and shit and journalists and people
- 22:17Speaker 2: that tell him is the best you know, if you're
- 22:19Speaker 2: that young, if you're seventeen, eighteen ninety years and everybody
- 22:22Speaker 2: has already told you for five years, you're the best
- 22:24Speaker 2: thing since Mark mcas you're a new Mark Marquest. At
- 22:27Speaker 2: some point you believe it. You can't even blame them.
- 22:29Speaker 2: So if you come in the box, you look on
- 22:31Speaker 2: the TV screen j on screen number two, then for
- 22:33Speaker 2: sure something's wrong with the bike, because I'm the next
- 22:35Speaker 2: marquess and that stops your development. You have to have
- 22:39Speaker 2: your feed on the ground and say no, no, no, that
- 22:41Speaker 2: wasn't really that great.
- 22:41Speaker 4: The way paid, of course, has started the year.
- 22:44Speaker 2: For sure, Okay had spent some time, needed to spend
- 22:47Speaker 2: some time with him and bring him down on the ground.
- 22:48Speaker 2: Come on, that's not enough. This Acosta was good this week.
- 22:52Speaker 2: Is definitely put his ship together again and riding the
- 22:54Speaker 2: wheels of the thing. That's not competitivele enough, But anyway,
- 22:57Speaker 2: I give it everything. So I want every many factor
- 23:00Speaker 2: have an alien. But we're running out of aliens.
- 23:03Speaker 3: We need more aliens. Ronda, I know you've got something
- 23:06Speaker 3: cueued up here. I want to just say stay on
- 23:07Speaker 3: one point here, Peter, you mentioned Quasarro before. He, to
- 23:11Speaker 3: my mind, is the second best rider in motor GP
- 23:14Speaker 3: if you were to line them all up and pick
- 23:15Speaker 3: them like picking football teams in the school yard. I guess.
- 23:19Speaker 3: So we discussed before about Honda having kick clear of Yamaha.
- 23:23Speaker 3: Kuatatero is right now Yamaha's biggest asset. It's the greatest
- 23:27Speaker 3: asset that manufacturer has. Where are Yamaha falling behind? What
- 23:32Speaker 3: do they need to do? Because there is a ticking
- 23:34Speaker 3: clock here with quashurero in that if he doesn't see
- 23:37Speaker 3: a level of development and progress that he thinks is acceptable,
- 23:41Speaker 3: then Yamaha run the risk of seeing their greatest asset leave.
- 23:45Speaker 3: What do Yamaha need to do to get back into
- 23:48Speaker 3: this and there's no magic bullets in motor GP. But
- 23:50Speaker 3: is the V four something close to being what he
- 23:54Speaker 3: needs to see to actually commit to them longer term.
- 23:56Speaker 2: It's pardof development. There's not enough they need to pick
- 23:59Speaker 2: up the speed. It takes them too long. The V
- 24:02Speaker 2: four looks beautiful and it looks very, very promising, but
- 24:06Speaker 2: it's too late. The bike that arrived shield of arrived
- 24:09Speaker 2: months ago already with that pace and then improving it
- 24:12Speaker 2: takes them all the time. Everything takes them too long
- 24:15Speaker 2: in Yamaha, which is a surprise because Yama is a
- 24:18Speaker 2: manufacturer in my eyes that historically already was working a lot,
- 24:23Speaker 2: a lot, a lot really together with the Europeans, instead
- 24:27Speaker 2: of we do everything in Japan, send it europe has
- 24:29Speaker 2: to be good.
- 24:30Speaker 4: If it's not good, send it back.
- 24:31Speaker 2: We make something better to work a lot with European engineers,
- 24:34Speaker 2: technicians and workshops and stuff. But somehow it you know,
- 24:39Speaker 2: you know, the Japanese culture probably better than me. But
- 24:42Speaker 2: they like check cross check check again because you're always
- 24:44Speaker 2: very fucking responsible for something on the line went wrong
- 24:47Speaker 2: and you signed it, so you take your time to
- 24:49Speaker 2: sign and this delays everything. Gig flies home and has
- 24:52Speaker 2: an id. The next morning, the three D printer is rolling.
- 24:55Speaker 2: The day after that, piro Vision Magello riding around think
- 24:58Speaker 2: about Honga. I spoke to Alex Bomgarten from Colix when
- 25:01Speaker 2: he was working for Hondo when he designed the sashis before.
- 25:04Speaker 2: He's very very uh discrete, so he didn't say any sicket,
- 25:09Speaker 2: but he told me without telling it me, he told
- 25:11Speaker 2: me how long the process was. So he has all
- 25:15Speaker 2: the dimensions, makes the sashi, then has to send it
- 25:19Speaker 2: to Japan. There it has to go to two three departments,
- 25:22Speaker 2: then it comes back to Europe to be tested. That's
- 25:24Speaker 2: already Sashi in number five for every Hony manufacturer, So
- 25:27Speaker 2: Honda was always in delay at that time. The Honda
- 25:30Speaker 2: got that ship together by buying a European manager and
- 25:32Speaker 2: giving him enough freedom from Auprelia to work in the
- 25:36Speaker 2: in the European way. That's what they did. That makes
- 25:39Speaker 2: the difference in Honda and Yama.
- 25:41Speaker 4: They have also, I.
- 25:42Speaker 2: Mean they bought Gigi's brother more or less young brothers as.
- 25:45Speaker 4: Well, so that's cool.
- 25:47Speaker 2: But somehow in the whole culture this this Max Bottolini
- 25:52Speaker 2: probably doesn't have enough freedom to really forge things to speed.
- 25:57Speaker 1: Up.
- 25:58Speaker 2: When Jiji first was asked for CUTI, he didn't got
- 26:01Speaker 2: the free hand completely as you wanted it, so he
- 26:02Speaker 2: stayed in Noala, and then they come back for him again.
- 26:06Speaker 2: He said, but you can only do that job properly
- 26:10Speaker 2: if you got a complete free hand.
- 26:11Speaker 4: There will always be some director.
- 26:13Speaker 2: From some department that's very fucking important and interesting and
- 26:16Speaker 2: makes it and makes your decision. Stop has to check
- 26:19Speaker 2: it as well first, and then you're gone. You know,
- 26:21Speaker 2: racing is a very fast moving it's not about being
- 26:24Speaker 2: so much smarter than the other by keeping a little
- 26:26Speaker 2: adventage all the time over the competition. That's only done
- 26:29Speaker 2: by quick decisions, hardworking quick decisions, especially quicker reactions to
- 26:34Speaker 2: what happens. Him at the CUTI is the master, you
- 26:36Speaker 2: tell him it, but purely also approved this year by
- 26:40Speaker 2: by improving so much during the season that they understand
- 26:42Speaker 2: that as well. KTM is all sorts of other troubles
- 26:47Speaker 2: and Yama for me, if you come back to Yama
- 26:49Speaker 2: for me, it all takes just too long. They kept
- 26:51Speaker 2: on working on the inline for it. They made thousand engines,
- 26:54Speaker 2: one hundred exhaust and it was always worse, and finally
- 26:58Speaker 2: they found an inline for it was just a little
- 27:01Speaker 2: bit more faster and then didn't destroy the whole riding
- 27:06Speaker 2: capacities of the Yama for the first time only the
- 27:08Speaker 2: last engine was not destroying the Sashi. Well, that's a
- 27:12Speaker 2: very worrying thing. That took them way too much. But
- 27:15Speaker 2: from what you can see from the outside, the V
- 27:17Speaker 2: four look beautiful and the riders that we were allowed
- 27:21Speaker 2: to speak to were all like what you expect them
- 27:25Speaker 2: to say, you know, I expect the jack to say.
- 27:27Speaker 4: The jacks professional, he knew what to say.
- 27:29Speaker 2: Fabio Cottrado is also professional, but he has a different agenda.
- 27:32Speaker 2: He's not injectious. He is in a different party in
- 27:34Speaker 2: his career. He is still I think Fabi is till
- 27:36Speaker 2: twenty six somethings, really really young. Yeah, so he just
- 27:40Speaker 2: says it's crap, it's ship, it's crap, it's nothing.
- 27:43Speaker 4: You know.
- 27:44Speaker 2: He doesn't even want to say anything good about the bike,
- 27:47Speaker 2: but that's his agenda. He's putting pressure on Yama. It's
- 27:50Speaker 2: not a negative guy. He doesn't have a negative outlook
- 27:53Speaker 2: on life. Fabia Coatrado. He just tries everything he can
- 27:57Speaker 2: to force Yama to speed up the development. These guys,
- 28:01Speaker 2: they know a lot more than they can tell us.
- 28:02Speaker 2: They and they all speak with each other as well.
- 28:05Speaker 2: Factors can be neighbors. You know, they go cycling every
- 28:07Speaker 2: day in under each other. Yeah, there is a lot
- 28:11Speaker 2: more information flowing going on on that level than we
- 28:14Speaker 2: think it is. Especially after that I either realized it's
- 28:16Speaker 2: probably a next year in this team or for sure
- 28:19Speaker 2: I'm next year in that other team. Then you know,
- 28:22Speaker 2: there's a lot that is very little secrets. There's only
- 28:24Speaker 2: us that are the latest people to hear something, and
- 28:28Speaker 2: then because we love it so much. But that is
- 28:31Speaker 2: a whole different amount of layers of what really is
- 28:34Speaker 2: happening in MONTI tip was a long answer. I promise
- 28:38Speaker 2: you to be sure, sorry to cut me short.
- 28:41Speaker 1: No, no, no, I loved it.
- 28:42Speaker 2: I loved it.
- 28:43Speaker 1: You mentioned Jack there, and that was my next thought
- 28:45Speaker 1: that I wanted to ask you because I know you
- 28:47Speaker 1: and Matt spoke to Jack recently. We heard that interview
- 28:50Speaker 1: come out on your podcast. We only see what we
- 28:53Speaker 1: see on the TV. And I spent a little bit
- 28:55Speaker 1: of time with Jack and I think it was in
- 28:56Speaker 1: Aragon earlier this year, but I don't know the ins
- 28:59Speaker 1: and outs. I was just seeing Jack as the person.
- 29:02Speaker 1: In your opinion, is he doing enough to be helping
- 29:06Speaker 1: that the Yamaha and grow and get the results, because
- 29:11Speaker 1: you know, we saw obviously the chain incident on the weekend,
- 29:14Speaker 1: we've seen Jack go from reasonably good results and then
- 29:18Speaker 1: other weekends. Is ship to say it nicely, what's your
- 29:22Speaker 1: thoughts on Jack this.
- 29:22Speaker 2: Year, Yamma, I should hold of Jack because his feedback
- 29:26Speaker 2: is gold. He's an old school writer that knows way
- 29:28Speaker 2: too much about the motorbike, which usually is a problem.
- 29:30Speaker 2: And there is no way too much. It usually is
- 29:33Speaker 2: a problem because then they once you understand a couple
- 29:36Speaker 2: of things, you conclude other things and then cuddainly' you've
- 29:39Speaker 2: become a Sashi engineer. You know. No, no, no, I don't
- 29:41Speaker 2: want to pivot there. I want to pivot here, I
- 29:43Speaker 2: want to swing. I'm like this, I want central graffty there.
- 29:46Speaker 2: Otherwise doesn't that that's that's that's Jack knows a lot,
- 29:49Speaker 2: But at the same time he says, I leave it
- 29:51Speaker 2: to the engineers to do something with it. I just
- 29:53Speaker 2: tell how it feels to me and what I would
- 29:55Speaker 2: have done to other bikes or what I've done in
- 29:57Speaker 2: the past with other bikes. That helped me a lot
- 29:59Speaker 2: and then leave it to you guys. He is very
- 30:02Speaker 2: very sensitive, so at the moment is very important for
- 30:05Speaker 2: the Yama project in my eyes.
- 30:08Speaker 4: But yeah, that's it.
- 30:10Speaker 2: At the moment is I don't even understand why it
- 30:13Speaker 2: took them so long to the side, and that's probably
- 30:15Speaker 2: proof of that everything takes the long on Yama. It's
- 30:18Speaker 2: no brain to hire check. It's also no brain to
- 30:22Speaker 2: to start making Vivo very fucking quickly.
- 30:24Speaker 4: But they didn't.
- 30:25Speaker 2: The bike wasn't The bike looks beautiful from the outside,
- 30:28Speaker 2: but I was close to one of the bikes actually
- 30:31Speaker 2: to Jacks, the bike that was waiting in Jeck side
- 30:33Speaker 2: of the garage in Misiano on Monday, there was not
- 30:36Speaker 2: a finished bike that that was not a finished bike.
- 30:40Speaker 4: It wasn't It wasn't bad.
- 30:42Speaker 2: But Yama usually when they bring a new bike, it's
- 30:46Speaker 2: more refined, more details are already sort in a beautiful,
- 30:49Speaker 2: nice way like you can like you can push the
- 30:51Speaker 2: button and you make ten thousands of them to sell
- 30:53Speaker 2: them in Asia. That's normally prototype from Yama or Honda.
- 30:57Speaker 2: Not this one, not this one. To work a lot
- 31:00Speaker 2: on it, very very hard. It was still in the
- 31:02Speaker 2: stadium like, you shouldn't bring it to a test, you
- 31:05Speaker 2: should bring it still to you bring it with a
- 31:08Speaker 2: private test, and then right around with it. I think
- 31:11Speaker 2: they only brought it to you go back to the
- 31:13Speaker 2: to the to what you said. They what they're going
- 31:16Speaker 2: to do to keep Fabio Quadrao interested. So make sure
- 31:20Speaker 2: we have a couple of fee for us righting around
- 31:21Speaker 2: with it. Obviously you're going to tell the pressure you
- 31:23Speaker 2: hate it because you wanted to go faster. But anyway,
- 31:25Speaker 2: you have a taste of it, and the bike was
- 31:27Speaker 2: at least not slower than the in line, for which
- 31:30Speaker 2: is a good thing. It's not easy to be faster
- 31:32Speaker 2: than fully. I mean, the development cycle of the N
- 31:36Speaker 2: one is thousand years. It was very also very interesting
- 31:40Speaker 2: to hear him talk about in when we had the
- 31:42Speaker 2: injury with him. He said, it's immediately a nice, friendly bike.
- 31:46Speaker 2: You can sort of immediately smell and feel okay, there
- 31:49Speaker 2: is there is a lot of years of development in
- 31:52Speaker 2: this bike. Everything fits, everything is nice, everything works. But
- 31:55Speaker 2: it's also probably an end on the end, because bikes
- 31:57Speaker 2: on the end of there of the.
- 32:00Speaker 4: Life cycle are usually beautiful. I never buy a new
- 32:03Speaker 4: motorbike because it always is full of bucks.
- 32:05Speaker 2: But by the time they stopped that model, it's the
- 32:07Speaker 2: best moment to buy it.
- 32:08Speaker 4: So jejection on the bike.
- 32:10Speaker 2: There is the end of the of the life from
- 32:12Speaker 2: the M one in line and it's a beautiful, beautiful bike,
- 32:15Speaker 2: but it's it's a dinosaur as well. Multiv bikes shouldn't
- 32:19Speaker 2: be look like that and shouldn't be ridden like that.
- 32:21Speaker 2: We need other bikes because tires dictate the development, and
- 32:25Speaker 2: tires are so different, but they're already very different for many,
- 32:28Speaker 2: many years, and yama didn't pick that up well enough,
- 32:32Speaker 2: It's gone.
- 32:33Speaker 1: Sorry, Matt, I just was thinking then always even though
- 32:36Speaker 1: Fabruary is only ever ridden Yamaheimoto GP. We saw Mark
- 32:40Speaker 1: go from obviously Honda, did you Caddy, how difficult is
- 32:43Speaker 1: it for him to then go from the in line
- 32:45Speaker 1: to the V for Is he going to have to
- 32:47Speaker 1: change like his riding style or is it because he
- 32:49Speaker 1: is the alien like you guys are saying, it's going
- 32:51Speaker 1: to be simpler for him, and it's the bike that
- 32:53Speaker 1: needs to.
- 32:55Speaker 2: It's not going to be simple. Look, because remember what
- 32:57Speaker 2: I said about Mark, I was I was maybe the
- 32:59Speaker 2: most one of the most interesting thing I've seen Mark
- 33:02Speaker 2: doing for years is adopting himself in how less than
- 33:05Speaker 2: how he last already the Gatti, So you really have
- 33:09Speaker 2: to to change your approach. And he is a little
- 33:11Speaker 2: bit like Mark, like over aggressive over the front, you know,
- 33:14Speaker 2: top rack style into the car and you can't do that.
- 33:16Speaker 4: That's slow.
- 33:17Speaker 2: That's really really slow on a good motor t bike.
- 33:19Speaker 4: Don't do that.
- 33:20Speaker 2: So obviously we media as people that we are asking
- 33:25Speaker 2: this all the time. He knew he can see these
- 33:28Speaker 2: questions coming and he is is his reaction is faster,
- 33:32Speaker 2: and then then is then you know, it's really really
- 33:36Speaker 2: fast saying no, that's not a problem.
- 33:37Speaker 4: I don't need to change my riding style.
- 33:38Speaker 2: I will be immediately fast on if the v force good,
- 33:41Speaker 2: I will be fast. But these answers came so quickly
- 33:44Speaker 2: that he knew them. He knew them, he knows what
- 33:47Speaker 2: to say. He is using us to forge Yama, but
- 33:51Speaker 2: really like it's really good pointing it that he has
- 33:53Speaker 2: to prove something because you're only an alien alien if
- 33:56Speaker 2: you went to a completely different bike and adjusted to it.
- 34:00Speaker 2: Of course, the Yama is like the easiest bike. It's
- 34:02Speaker 2: still a fucking fast motortor bike. The real proper motorbike
- 34:06Speaker 2: st a multiviewbacks are pretty undergarded. They have to be
- 34:09Speaker 2: ridden very differently, very unnatural.
- 34:11Speaker 3: We see, No, that's we've Peter, we've touched on the
- 34:16Speaker 3: other four manufacturers. To my mind, across the last half
- 34:18Speaker 3: an hour or so, I did want to get to
- 34:20Speaker 3: a Prillier and just ask you to put your Massamo
- 34:24Speaker 3: Rivela hat on here. Imagine that you're managing that team.
- 34:27Speaker 3: What's the conversation with Jorge Martin like after what happens
- 34:30Speaker 3: on the first lap of the sprint at Motegi, Because
- 34:32Speaker 3: you've spent that much money on this guy this year
- 34:35Speaker 3: and he's had three major injuries already, and then we
- 34:38Speaker 3: saw what happened in the first quarter at Motegi. He's
- 34:40Speaker 3: out again, he's broken his right collar bone. He'll at
- 34:42Speaker 3: least miss Indonesia. Who knows when he comes back. But
- 34:45Speaker 3: if you're Masimo at this point, what's that conversation like,
- 34:48Speaker 3: Because it's got to the point now where JORGEI has been,
- 34:53Speaker 3: you know, the author of his own story this year,
- 34:55Speaker 3: and that so many of these injuries feel self inflicted.
- 34:58Speaker 3: How do you sit down with your rider and have
- 35:00Speaker 3: that chat at this point, that's a tough conversation is it.
- 35:03Speaker 2: I'm so glad I'm not him because I will be
- 35:05Speaker 2: way too much. I'm Dutch, so I'm straight. You know whatever,
- 35:09Speaker 2: you will know there was no there's no fucking around
- 35:12Speaker 2: or talking around it. We call us paper paid and
- 35:15Speaker 2: we love that. So I'm glad I'm not the guy
- 35:17Speaker 2: because Horror will be crying out of the the truck
- 35:19Speaker 2: and go home and never look at me again.
- 35:21Speaker 4: We can't do that.
- 35:22Speaker 2: So mas Mo Rivela has done miracles with Horror by
- 35:27Speaker 2: accepting and then turning the whole thing around what horr
- 35:29Speaker 2: Ho already inflicted on himself, you know, by trying to
- 35:32Speaker 2: sneak out to home, Diane Sonia, all the ship he
- 35:35Speaker 2: brought over himself, It's all down to him. Everything was
- 35:37Speaker 2: down to himself. Everything that went wrong was Horror matching
- 35:40Speaker 2: all the time. Whether you go out on the medium
- 35:43Speaker 2: tired that everybody knows you's a punkt as, don't even
- 35:46Speaker 2: look at it, don't even bring it in the grass.
- 35:48Speaker 2: We don't need that medium retired. It's fucking dangerous, it's
- 35:50Speaker 2: too coldish money.
- 35:51Speaker 4: We stay in the box.
- 35:52Speaker 2: One guys goes out, that's the same guy that told her,
- 35:55Speaker 2: told us the day before on the on the the
- 35:58Speaker 2: little on the press meeting, in the in the media
- 36:00Speaker 2: center span. We're obviously asking him, Okay, now you're leading
- 36:03Speaker 2: the development, how you deal with the pressure? Speaking of
- 36:08Speaker 2: speaking of questions, and he said pressure.
- 36:10Speaker 4: Pressure.
- 36:11Speaker 2: Last year was pressure. I was fighting for the championship.
- 36:13Speaker 2: Now I'm leading the development. That's easy for me. I
- 36:15Speaker 2: can lead the development. And next morning he goes out
- 36:17Speaker 2: when nobody wanted to go out on the wrong tie.
- 36:20Speaker 2: He crashes, immediately goes back to the bog, go out
- 36:23Speaker 2: again on the same tie which was down even colder,
- 36:25Speaker 2: and then really break something. Okay, that's a difficult start
- 36:29Speaker 2: of disease, but it wasn't the empty The whole sequence
- 36:32Speaker 2: of things that they all did to himself started from
- 36:35Speaker 2: there on. Yeah, he he has dropped a little bit
- 36:39Speaker 2: from where I put him last year. He's the guy
- 36:41Speaker 2: that is an example of if you put him in
- 36:43Speaker 2: a very stable situation like Pramr Dukatti is the best
- 36:46Speaker 2: team in the world for a rider to be because
- 36:48Speaker 2: he got all the advantage of a factory team without
- 36:50Speaker 2: the bullshit and without the pressure. Just these are just
- 36:53Speaker 2: a group of friends that love each other and go racing.
- 36:55Speaker 4: That's product.
- 36:56Speaker 2: Even now with Yama, they love to go racing. They're
- 36:58Speaker 2: all these friends everybody. I mean, if you're not happy
- 37:01Speaker 2: in Primark, you're in trouble, you will maybe you know
- 37:04Speaker 2: you're the problem. Possible, that's impossible. So he got all
- 37:09Speaker 2: the stars aligned for a couple of years, and then
- 37:11Speaker 2: he did a really really good job by just beating Peko.
- 37:14Speaker 2: But now now it shows that he still has a
- 37:17Speaker 2: lot of learning to do. He's a bit of immaturity,
- 37:19Speaker 2: can be a bit of wild thinking left and right,
- 37:22Speaker 2: up and down. As I mean, on his days, it's
- 37:25Speaker 2: not believed. On his days he's a lot better than Pekabayaya.
- 37:29Speaker 2: On his days, then Horroratin's more special. But there has
- 37:32Speaker 2: to be too many stars aligned for too long to
- 37:35Speaker 2: keep him in line. I have a big respect for
- 37:37Speaker 2: Apprelia for not having already the whole relationship destroyed, which
- 37:41Speaker 2: he tried to do. But yeah, that that conversation must
- 37:45Speaker 2: have been happened. Must have happened. But I also point
- 37:48Speaker 2: a little bit to the technical regulations. If you listen
- 37:52Speaker 2: to our podcast a couple of times, we do that
- 37:53Speaker 2: every now and then. Yeah, because we shouldn't we shouldn't
- 37:56Speaker 2: arrive at turn one at multijip races with the bike
- 37:59Speaker 2: that front are rail loaded, stripped to the ground, cannot
- 38:03Speaker 2: move to left and right and accelerate quite easily all
- 38:07Speaker 2: the same, so you still arrive with the high speed
- 38:09Speaker 2: with the group completely. Look at all the races, how
- 38:12Speaker 2: people arrive at turn one, not as close a group
- 38:15Speaker 2: as they are now, and the bikes now when they
- 38:17Speaker 2: arrive at turn one, everybody is on a higher speed
- 38:20Speaker 2: than effort, and then they have to be to do
- 38:23Speaker 2: something very unnatural. They take the break, but not too
- 38:25Speaker 2: aggressive because first year bike have to go back into
- 38:28Speaker 2: the normal position. Then you break and juggle for opposition.
- 38:31Speaker 2: It's always the first road that does everything perfect because
- 38:34Speaker 2: they have easy life. Second lad tries to make up
- 38:36Speaker 2: second row, try to make up some places. If you're lucky,
- 38:39Speaker 2: dive in all that's it. But after the second row,
- 38:41Speaker 2: that's the jungle, that's where everything goes wrong. He came
- 38:44Speaker 2: from row four or five. He should have been more
- 38:48Speaker 2: patient and dive in a hole that exists as far
- 38:51Speaker 2: as you can still maneuver these things before you break,
- 38:54Speaker 2: but he was immediately. He was way too early out
- 38:56Speaker 2: of control. And then you're a passenger on current multipeed bikes.
- 38:59Speaker 2: Once decided to start your breaking action just two meters later,
- 39:03Speaker 2: and everybody else and he already knew what was going
- 39:06Speaker 2: to ship. And you're a passion You sit on the check,
- 39:09Speaker 2: goes to ride because you get pushed by somebody else.
- 39:11Speaker 2: Then you're on the door, Then you're locking the front,
- 39:13Speaker 2: then you have to open the front. Then you know
- 39:14Speaker 2: it's got its bowling time. So he took out only
- 39:17Speaker 2: one rider, but you don't make that shit up.
- 39:19Speaker 3: It's his teammates, the only the only person you don't
- 39:23Speaker 3: want to take it in that situation.
- 39:24Speaker 2: I don't want we don't want whole shot devices on bike,
- 39:27Speaker 2: really don't want them. They bring nothing but danger. We
- 39:30Speaker 2: get rid of them, but better yesterday than twenty seven.
- 39:35Speaker 1: So I think my takeaway from that is Pete's really
- 39:37Speaker 1: looking forward to twenty twenty seven.
- 39:39Speaker 3: Yeah, yeah, I think we all are.
- 39:41Speaker 2: Yeah, yeah, one hundred percent. Yeah right. They will change
- 39:45Speaker 2: everything everything because as all the riders tell us, all
- 39:48Speaker 2: we do is follow the tires. The tires are when
- 39:51Speaker 2: you draw a new motorcycle, you start with taking two
- 39:54Speaker 2: tires on your desk and then start to think what
- 39:56Speaker 2: to do with them, just these two tires, not because
- 39:59Speaker 2: anytime tied, it's really tired. It's mission I. Once you
- 40:02Speaker 2: understand your tires, everything is dedicated to understand and make
- 40:06Speaker 2: the best out of these tires. And Missilion's tires are
- 40:08Speaker 2: are very weird. They have a rear tire it's unbelievably
- 40:11Speaker 2: fucking beautiful and a front tiree that's difficult to say
- 40:14Speaker 2: the least, and then never change it. That's the DNA
- 40:16Speaker 2: of these tires. We go to other tires, which in
- 40:18Speaker 2: the end we also have their downfall because when you
- 40:21Speaker 2: push tires day and night, every minute to the limit,
- 40:24Speaker 2: you will feel something whoa, that's the way. It's reaction
- 40:26Speaker 2: on why he's doing that. But in the end the
- 40:29Speaker 2: tires will be so different, so it will be interesting
- 40:32Speaker 2: to sue you picks up what to do with the
- 40:34Speaker 2: new tires. The first my guess is new Kati, but
- 40:37Speaker 2: I don't say right.
- 40:39Speaker 1: Well, on that note, we still have twenty twenty five
- 40:42Speaker 1: to go and there is five more races, so we
- 40:45Speaker 1: are still in the fly aways. Indonesia is up next,
- 40:48Speaker 1: which is this weekend, but the same weekend as a
- 40:51Speaker 1: Formula one. So listeners, if you divide it between what
- 40:54Speaker 1: to watch Motor GP all the way, formula's a night racing.
- 40:58Speaker 1: It's not even two wheels too many, right, correct? But Peter,
- 41:02Speaker 1: thank you so much for be coming on the podcast
- 41:05Speaker 1: all that. If one, listeners are gonna like tune out now,
- 41:06Speaker 1: but thank you again for coming on the fit Talk podcast. Honestly,
- 41:09Speaker 1: every time I listen to you on on.
- 41:11Speaker 2: Already now we just thought. Now I feel a little
- 41:14Speaker 2: bit and I feel bad actually now because I'm like,
- 41:18Speaker 2: you know, I have no self control because you guys,
- 41:21Speaker 2: you guys. I feel like I'm trapped because you give
- 41:23Speaker 2: me a question that you know I really loved, and
- 41:25Speaker 2: then I give a more explanation about it, and then
- 41:28Speaker 2: you say something again and I'm like, oh, there was
- 41:30Speaker 2: a bit too much about me. Maybe, sure that they've
- 41:32Speaker 2: had more like a conversation that I feel think because.
- 41:36Speaker 1: They get enough of being Matt all the time, They're like,
- 41:38Speaker 1: what's a new voice on here? We get someone else
- 41:40Speaker 1: to listen to, so they're gonna love it. So listeners,
- 41:44Speaker 1: if we've had it, say a million times, go and
- 41:46Speaker 1: listen to the offstly Bomb podcast because me and Matt
- 41:49Speaker 1: do all the time and we learn so much from yourself, Peter,
- 41:52Speaker 1: But I need to tell everyone so Peter actually worked
- 41:56Speaker 1: with my brother back in the Super Sports?
- 41:58Speaker 2: Can it?
- 41:59Speaker 1: Can I speak of Of course she can, of course
- 42:02Speaker 1: she can.
- 42:02Speaker 2: Nah. I feel a little bit embarrassed when I'm with
- 42:05Speaker 2: you because all the time I want to speak because
- 42:07Speaker 2: I worked three years with Chris and you were just
- 42:10Speaker 2: a very little girl at the time, so we have
- 42:12Speaker 2: no real history. But every time I speak with you,
- 42:14Speaker 2: I want to speak about Chris, which is a bit
- 42:16Speaker 2: shit because it's more about you now at the moment. Yeah,
- 42:20Speaker 2: where to start about Chris? Like I so I worked.
- 42:25Speaker 4: I was lucky enough to after Chris.
- 42:26Speaker 2: Chris was in my first couple of years in racing
- 42:29Speaker 2: as a professional, and then later I had the fortune
- 42:31Speaker 2: and also had the misfortune to work with some very
- 42:33Speaker 2: very good sometimes very not so good writers. So after
- 42:37Speaker 2: many years I see more who he was at that time,
- 42:40Speaker 2: how he was quite specially many many ways. And I
- 42:42Speaker 2: start with the downside of Chris. Just not give him
- 42:45Speaker 2: too much praise, just to piss him off. He was scarred,
- 42:48Speaker 2: he was a pussy. He hated to crash, He really didn't.
- 42:51Speaker 2: He crashed very very often when he crashed. He looked
- 42:54Speaker 2: at us like something really really terrible just happened. I mean, fuck, man,
- 42:58Speaker 2: you're just crashed. Everybody does that all the time. He
- 43:00Speaker 2: crashed very very few. But it's also a testimony of
- 43:03Speaker 2: his unbelievable skills he had. He had super farst reflexes
- 43:07Speaker 2: I hand coordination. These reflexes are unbelievable. But he hated risk,
- 43:11Speaker 2: so you can also say this is unbelievable how far
- 43:14Speaker 2: you can get by taking very very little risk, even
- 43:17Speaker 2: if it looked unbelievably scary. What he did, like winning
- 43:20Speaker 2: wet multijip races, he was in control. He was in control.
- 43:24Speaker 2: That that is a testimony to his talent. But he
- 43:28Speaker 2: could have done a couple of championships, probably more if
- 43:32Speaker 2: he should have had less problem at putting things on
- 43:35Speaker 2: the line, making taking a little bit more risk. But
- 43:40Speaker 2: that's that's like a constructive It sounds too negative because
- 43:44Speaker 2: it also made him having a nice, good long life,
- 43:47Speaker 2: still having, you know, having having a good life. He
- 43:49Speaker 2: was always such a nice person because he didn't need
- 43:51Speaker 2: to destroy everybody. I've worked with some top riders that
- 43:54Speaker 2: looking back, yeah, we became world champion, But was he
- 43:57Speaker 2: a nice kind not at all.
- 43:58Speaker 4: He was actually an ashole. You know.
- 43:59Speaker 2: He was fully in his own don wanted to be
- 44:01Speaker 2: every five minutes, needed to prove it. He was faster
- 44:03Speaker 2: and clever than everybody else. Not Chris. Chris was just
- 44:06Speaker 2: but just your neighborhood guy that is just happy to
- 44:09Speaker 2: ride around on one wheel all day and be friendly
- 44:11Speaker 2: to everybody. You put him on a motorbike, he accident
- 44:14Speaker 2: it sort of wins it doesn't find it very special
- 44:16Speaker 2: and also not very just too natural. It was just
- 44:19Speaker 2: too natural at that time. Riding in the rain was
- 44:22Speaker 2: a different game. Rain tires were crap and we had
- 44:26Speaker 2: a crap tire. The first Pirellian rain tied all the
- 44:29Speaker 2: parly ties and beginning the super bike were unbelievably shit.
- 44:31Speaker 2: This saved his career a little because he was so
- 44:34Speaker 2: good in managing when there is almost like no grip.
- 44:37Speaker 2: So two short stories. We go to Laguna Seca the
- 44:40Speaker 2: first time with the superbike. I'm so happy to have
- 44:42Speaker 2: tick the box Lagunaseka because you need to be there,
- 44:45Speaker 2: and we go there with just like I think we
- 44:47Speaker 2: had four people and Chris. That's five people in total,
- 44:50Speaker 2: two small crates and we were neighbors with the Petrona
- 44:53Speaker 2: Superbike team from Foggy. They had twenty thousand crates, three
- 44:56Speaker 2: pit boxes, burning the midnight.
- 44:58Speaker 4: Oil, doing zero results.
- 44:59Speaker 2: We had two creates, one spare faring and one engine.
- 45:02Speaker 4: That was all we had.
- 45:03Speaker 2: All we had and a laptop, my laptop and Chris
- 45:06Speaker 2: put it on polem in both races. But all he
- 45:09Speaker 2: did was very early realizing. He came in the first
- 45:12Speaker 2: session in the middle of the first thing. He said, guys,
- 45:14Speaker 2: that is just it's not just little grip. There's just
- 45:17Speaker 2: no crypt. Okay, we go left, we go right, we
- 45:20Speaker 2: go up, we go down. Halfway the second session, we said, Chris,
- 45:23Speaker 2: on Friday afternoon, we will not fight grip, just deal
- 45:26Speaker 2: with it. And the CUTI was sending overnight stuff from
- 45:30Speaker 2: Bologna another link rage show for the shock for they
- 45:33Speaker 2: were doing everything to look for grip and never found it.
- 45:36Speaker 2: E when it's not there, it's better too earlier say
- 45:38Speaker 2: there is no grip and I just deal with it.
- 45:40Speaker 2: And he loved he should have won a moultijiped there
- 45:42Speaker 2: as well. Yeah, it's an unbelievable track. So he was
- 45:45Speaker 2: nobody knew who specially he was at that time because
- 45:48Speaker 2: that home now was not. We called it the ship
- 45:50Speaker 2: was just a stock pike. It was really a super
- 45:52Speaker 2: stock pike, an unbelievable thing. Next thing in the rain,
- 45:55Speaker 2: we were giving him another. He was already winning everything
- 45:57Speaker 2: in the rain. He was always fast. So but still
- 46:00Speaker 2: we've thought our bike had a lot of talk and
- 46:02Speaker 2: a little bit aggressive talk on the first opening of
- 46:05Speaker 2: the talk, so you break, you break away the traction
- 46:07Speaker 2: and then you have to always have to wait too
- 46:10Speaker 2: long before it comes.
- 46:10Speaker 4: Back and you lose your exits.
- 46:11Speaker 2: So we made him an a trottle trottle grip from
- 46:17Speaker 2: the handlebar that had like a not line yar motion.
- 46:20Speaker 2: So the first couple of degrees it was like you
- 46:22Speaker 2: move a lot with your hand, but the real butterflies
- 46:24Speaker 2: on the engine don't open a lot, and so on
- 46:25Speaker 2: and so on. You know, to give him more feeling
- 46:28Speaker 2: for first opening, he goes out with it super fast
- 46:31Speaker 2: with it in the wet and then comes back. So
- 46:32Speaker 2: now I don't want it, because yeah, it helps me
- 46:36Speaker 2: be by opening, but when I have a slide, I
- 46:38Speaker 2: also need more time to come back completely. I like
- 46:40Speaker 2: the short, aggressive trottle because I have the speed. So
- 46:44Speaker 2: there's two things remarkable in the first that he can
- 46:46Speaker 2: do that. He has these reflexes. But secondly he realized
- 46:50Speaker 2: what was happening with his hand, with his brain when
- 46:52Speaker 2: something happened. Now, I work with a lot of riders,
- 46:55Speaker 2: but not many riders have that level of know how,
- 46:58Speaker 2: what and why they do what they do. Chris was unbelievable.
- 47:02Speaker 2: That's why he started his debrief. We always asked him
- 47:04Speaker 2: because if there was little time after the race, we
- 47:07Speaker 2: always ask him because on Sunday after the race, you have,
- 47:10Speaker 2: you know, everything you wanted to throw on Friday, but
- 47:12Speaker 2: it's only after race and it's too easy to then
- 47:14Speaker 2: go on the plane, go home, and then two weeks
- 47:16Speaker 2: later we see each other or another track. So we
- 47:18Speaker 2: asked Chris to write down how a normal lap in
- 47:22Speaker 2: that race felt and what was good, what was bad,
- 47:24Speaker 2: And he always started with the same sentence when I
- 47:25Speaker 2: break for the first turn. But he was just writing
- 47:28Speaker 2: in the plane by hand, and it was an unbelievable
- 47:31Speaker 2: long story, which told me. For him to turn one
- 47:34Speaker 2: in Valencia, it doesn't take three seconds, it takes three hours.
- 47:38Speaker 2: The way he understands it, he has he is like
- 47:40Speaker 2: a super fast data recorder with a lot of channels
- 47:43Speaker 2: at the same time, and he kind knows where where
- 47:44Speaker 2: the keys of the temper are at the same time
- 47:46Speaker 2: while losing the front and correcting it. That feedback was
- 47:49Speaker 2: unbelievable always, that was very, very impressive. So yeah, if
- 47:53Speaker 2: it wasn't for him for being a little bit scared,
- 47:54Speaker 2: he would have two times Milia, what you will champion now,
- 47:57Speaker 2: just kidd just kidding. That was unbelievable. He was unbelievable
- 48:00Speaker 2: in that way.
- 48:01Speaker 1: I love that you said that, because sorry, man, I
- 48:04Speaker 1: was just like talking about Chris now. But I used
- 48:07Speaker 1: to ask him because I was so young, like you said,
- 48:08Speaker 1: I said, what is it? What is it like? Like
- 48:11Speaker 1: what does a race feel like for you? And he
- 48:12Speaker 1: said it takes so long because everything's like I could
- 48:18Speaker 1: see the seconds, like taking the time to take over.
- 48:21Speaker 1: And then hearing you say that, I'm like, yeah, yeah, yeah.
- 48:25Speaker 2: Everything happens in your emotion while in reality soon with
- 48:30Speaker 2: the special guys, and he's aware of it and knows
- 48:32Speaker 2: how to explain it. It was easy working with him.
- 48:35Speaker 2: We didn't look need to look a lot at the data.
- 48:37Speaker 2: Of course, his feedback was complete complete.
- 48:41Speaker 1: Well, just to let you know, we don't do family
- 48:43Speaker 1: game night at our house because he just has to
