- 0:00Speaker 1: That's impossible let me tell you what i believe but
- 0:03Speaker 1: your weakness.
- 0:04Speaker 2: Is not your technique don't think you are no you.
- 0:11Speaker 1: Are the impossible life podcast.
- 0:14Speaker 2: You're sitting on a winning lottery.
- 0:15Speaker 3: Ticket an idea that is fully formed fully understood that sticks.
- 0:22Speaker 4: This is the impossible life podcast because Nick and I
- 0:26Speaker 4: are attempting to live impossible lives. What we know is
- 0:30Speaker 4: that nothing is impossible. So instead of using impossible as
- 0:34Speaker 4: an excuse to not try, we'll use the pursuit of
- 0:37Speaker 4: impossible as an accelerant for greatness. If something's never been
- 0:42Speaker 4: done before, that just means it's unexplored. If they tell
- 0:46Speaker 4: you it's too hard, it's just waiting to be simplified.
- 0:50Speaker 4: Impossible is a default label, used by uncourageous people, unwilling
- 0:55Speaker 4: to take a risk.
- 0:56Speaker 3: The real truth is this.
- 0:58Speaker 4: The solution to any impossible task starts with this question.
- 1:03Speaker 3: If I had to, what would it take?
- 1:05Speaker 2: Welcome to another episode of the Impossible Life Podcast. I'm
- 1:13Speaker 2: your co-host, Nick Surface, and I'm looking across at a
- 1:15Speaker 2: man so fearless, he has a pet grizzly bear named Chompy.
- 1:18Speaker 2: That's right, friends, the former Navy SEAL. Garrett Unklebach, a
- 1:24Speaker 2: man who takes dominion seriously. Well done.
- 1:29Speaker 3: I would absolutely have a grizzly as a pet. You
- 1:35Speaker 3: can't do it. There's other large animals that would be
- 1:37Speaker 3: cool pets, like lions or tigers, but you can't trust cats, bro.
- 1:40Speaker 3: You can't trust them. Yeah. I'm with you.
- 1:43Speaker 2: We're all in on the dog family.
- 1:45Speaker 3: There's a few magicians who have something to say about that.
- 1:48Speaker 3: But bears are big dogs. I feel like you could
- 1:51Speaker 3: totally domesticate a grizzly. However, I did not expect that response.
- 1:55Speaker 3: Really tragic stories of people who tried to do so
- 1:57Speaker 3: and became friends with the grizzly until the grizzly decided
- 2:00Speaker 3: it wasn't so domestic anymore.
- 2:01Speaker 2: So, well, there's also some terrible stories about people who
- 2:05Speaker 2: raise monkey, like raise certain types of apes. And then, yeah, anyways,
- 2:08Speaker 2: we're getting distracted. Okay. Today's episode G it's three, it's
- 2:13Speaker 2: the 343rd episode. And we had we had one of
- 2:16Speaker 2: our listeners reach out on Instagram, shout out to all
- 2:18Speaker 2: our firefighters out there. Cause we know that three 43
- 2:20Speaker 2: is a massive number. I didn't know this personally. Of course,
- 2:24Speaker 2: Garrett already knew it, but I did not. So there
- 2:26Speaker 2: was 343 firefighters that died in 9-11, which we celebrated
- 2:30Speaker 2: the 25th anniversary of that literally a week ago today
- 2:33Speaker 2: as we record this. By the time this comes out,
- 2:35Speaker 2: it'll have been almost two weeks. But man, you talk about,
- 2:40Speaker 2: I remember obviously where I was at 9-11. And I
- 2:44Speaker 2: also remember the thought process. It didn't make sense to
- 2:47Speaker 2: me at the time of guys rushing into a building
- 2:49Speaker 2: and Knowing full well it was very likely they were
- 2:51Speaker 2: going to die, but that was what was required of them.
- 2:54Speaker 2: And I remember the outpouring. It was great to see
- 2:57Speaker 2: it again on the 25th anniversary to capture some of
- 2:59Speaker 2: that spirit again of when we rallied around what really makes,
- 3:03Speaker 2: in my opinion, men and America great, is that you
- 3:06Speaker 2: would die for something that's much bigger than you and
- 3:09Speaker 2: that you would do the right thing even in the
- 3:11Speaker 2: face of overwhelming adversity. And so we want to do
- 3:14Speaker 2: an episode today where we really look at the attitude
- 3:17Speaker 2: of going into death, obedient to death, to capture that mindset.
- 3:23Speaker 2: We talked about it with Dr. Robbie recently about, you know,
- 3:26Speaker 2: you said people bring different things into death. You've obviously
- 3:30Speaker 2: faced death and unfortunately lost men that you were very
- 3:33Speaker 2: close to. And you said some guys come out of
- 3:36Speaker 2: it and they're traumatized. Because what you bring into it
- 3:38Speaker 2: determines how you deal with it and what you come
- 3:40Speaker 2: out of it. So we want to give people a
- 3:41Speaker 2: bulletproof mindset, truthfully a Christian eternal mindset about death.
- 3:46Speaker 4: Yeah.
- 3:47Speaker 3: So for one, send this to any firefighters you know
- 3:51Speaker 3: and tell them, thank you. This isn't just a 9-11 episode,
- 3:54Speaker 3: but this episode, 343, is an honor and a tribute
- 3:58Speaker 3: to firefighters and their service. Not just New York firefighters,
- 4:01Speaker 3: but all firefighters who serve and put their lives at
- 4:05Speaker 3: risk to help keep us safe. So thank you to
- 4:08Speaker 3: all the firefighters out there. I know there's plenty of us.
- 4:11Speaker 3: And what we want this episode to be about today is,
- 4:13Speaker 3: and Nick covered it, this is how to have a
- 4:15Speaker 3: right relationship with death. You know, 9-11, it's what it was.
- 4:19Speaker 3: This is my personal term for it. I call them
- 4:22Speaker 3: mortality moments, okay? And mortality moments can happen in any
- 4:27Speaker 3: way for you, but it's just something that snaps you
- 4:30Speaker 3: back to the reality that I'm going to die one day. Okay.
- 4:34Speaker 3: 9-11 was, it's a mortality moment for people. You can,
- 4:38Speaker 3: people have different levels of sensitivities to it and how
- 4:40Speaker 3: you respond to it. And like Nick talked about it, yes,
- 4:42Speaker 3: what you bring into it is how you respond to it.
- 4:44Speaker 3: And that's not just a Navy SEAL thing. That's everyone.
- 4:47Speaker 3: Mortality moments can happen. You know, say for a lot
- 4:50Speaker 3: of people, it's like when the first time someone close
- 4:53Speaker 3: in their family dies, your grandparents die or something like that.
- 4:55Speaker 3: And that's a nice, gentle movement into a sense of
- 4:59Speaker 3: mortality when a grandparent dies. You have a friend in
- 5:02Speaker 3: high school die in a car accident. You, or you
- 5:06Speaker 3: even pass a car accident on the road that, you know,
- 5:10Speaker 3: you can, you know, when there's a fatality in a
- 5:12Speaker 3: car accident because there's 37 police officers there and the
- 5:15Speaker 3: entire road shut down and it's a nasty looking accident.
- 5:18Speaker 3: And you realize that somebody just died there. These things
- 5:21Speaker 3: make people think about death. And so I want to
- 5:24Speaker 3: just give some of my personal views as it relates
- 5:26Speaker 3: to this. And then, and then, you know, as kingdom-minded people,
- 5:30Speaker 3: how we should be equipped to think about this. Because
- 5:33Speaker 3: what Scripture says is, oh, death, where is your sting?
- 5:36Speaker 3: What Scripture says is, put your mind on things that
- 5:40Speaker 3: are above, not on things of this earth. Death should
- 5:43Speaker 3: not be scary to you. I've talked about it on
- 5:45Speaker 3: this show before, how it is one of the superpowers
- 5:48Speaker 3: of people who think this way. It's a superpower that
- 5:51Speaker 3: I walk with. Like, hey, I don't just walk around
- 5:54Speaker 3: thinking I'm invincible, but I do walk around understanding that
- 5:57Speaker 3: I'm eternal and there's a difference. But mortality moments, I
- 6:01Speaker 3: think this is a personal view from having experienced a
- 6:04Speaker 3: lot of it, been around a lot of it. Some
- 6:07Speaker 3: people are very afraid of death. I think what has
- 6:10Speaker 3: to do with that is what your relationship with death
- 6:12Speaker 3: has been your whole life. One of the things, if
- 6:14Speaker 3: you study warriors, if you study warriors, Warriors, this is
- 6:19Speaker 3: the one that I've spent a lot of time looking
- 6:20Speaker 3: at is the Spartan and the Gogi culture. But many
- 6:23Speaker 3: of the great warrior cultures in history had a very
- 6:26Speaker 3: strong and personal relationship with death. The Samurais is a
- 6:29Speaker 3: huge part of their culture. From the very beginning of
- 6:32Speaker 3: their training, they thought about their death. They thought about
- 6:35Speaker 3: how they would die. They weren't afraid of their relationship
- 6:38Speaker 3: with death. They almost looked forward to it. They knew
- 6:41Speaker 3: it was coming. And they wanted to meet it correctly.
- 6:43Speaker 3: They wanted to meet that. Now, that is a right
- 6:46Speaker 3: relationship with mortality. It's a wrong relationship with anything if
- 6:50Speaker 3: you're closing your eyes and pretending it will never happen.
- 6:52Speaker 3: It's eating ice cream and hoping that you won't get
- 6:54Speaker 3: fat because of it. It's a delusional relationship. And delusion
- 7:00Speaker 3: sets you up for disaster. And this is how when
- 7:03Speaker 3: you don't have a right relationship with death, you have
- 7:06Speaker 3: what Tecumseh talks about in his so famous poem. that
- 7:10Speaker 3: many get to the end of their life and they
- 7:12Speaker 3: wish that they had done it differently, praying and weeping
- 7:16Speaker 3: for a little more time so they could go back
- 7:19Speaker 3: and do it over again. That's not where you want
- 7:22Speaker 3: to be when you die. You're going to be like
- 7:24Speaker 3: my friend, Charlie Keating. I say his name as many
- 7:28Speaker 3: times as I can. Died May 3rd, 2016 with a
- 7:31Speaker 3: smile on his face. Charlie didn't die with a smile
- 7:33Speaker 3: on his face because his family received a $ 400, 000 death benefit.
- 7:37Speaker 3: Excuse me, got something in my throat. Charlie died with
- 7:41Speaker 3: a smile on his face because he realized he had
- 7:44Speaker 3: given his life to something that was worth fighting for.
- 7:48Speaker 3: I'll come back to that in a little bit. But really,
- 7:51Speaker 3: mortality moments are anytime you have an encounter and it
- 7:55Speaker 3: either reminds you of, hey, I'm living my life for
- 7:58Speaker 3: the right thing. Or if you have been delusional, you
- 8:02Speaker 3: have this encounter, you have a mortality moment and it
- 8:05Speaker 3: breaks your delusion and it's very difficult for you to handle.
- 8:09Speaker 3: And if you want to understand what your relationship with
- 8:12Speaker 3: death is, how do you respond? What changes in you?
- 8:15Speaker 3: What sort of emotions do you feel when you experience death?
- 8:19Speaker 3: Not your own, but when you experience somebody else's. Just
- 8:22Speaker 3: lost a friend, just saw a car accident, just this
- 8:25Speaker 3: big tragic event. Do you realize like, yeah, I'm living greatly?
- 8:30Speaker 3: Or does it make you say like, man, I got
- 8:31Speaker 3: to change all these things in my life. So this
- 8:35Speaker 3: episode isn't about mortality moments. It is about what's your
- 8:38Speaker 3: relationship with death is. And I'm using mortality moments as
- 8:42Speaker 3: just kind of this first launching off point of every,
- 8:44Speaker 3: we've all experienced one of these. If you're more than,
- 8:47Speaker 3: you know, 10 or so years old, you've probably experienced
- 8:50Speaker 3: some form of a mortality moment. And I'll just say
- 8:53Speaker 3: on the, on the age thing there really quick, my
- 8:55Speaker 3: dad was, this is, this is my views, take it
- 8:58Speaker 3: or leave it. I see people who do both. Here's
- 9:01Speaker 3: my very strong opinion. I will not protect my children. Um,
- 9:06Speaker 3: trying to help them think that death doesn't exist. Okay.
- 9:10Speaker 3: Certainly as a believer, that's not my view, right? Death,
- 9:16Speaker 3: where is your sting? The destruction of death, Christ robbed
- 9:20Speaker 3: that on the cross. Christ took that away, right? So
- 9:23Speaker 3: as believers, we should have great hope in that. Again,
- 9:26Speaker 3: I am going to die one day, right? My life
- 9:29Speaker 3: here on earth will end, but I'm eternal. I'm going
- 9:32Speaker 3: to be in heaven with Christ and And I'm going
- 9:35Speaker 3: to continue to go on after that. I'm not afraid
- 9:38Speaker 3: of death. Don't teach your children to be afraid of
- 9:40Speaker 3: death and don't put the, and I'm not saying you
- 9:42Speaker 3: got to like teach this to your three-year-old, but don't
- 9:44Speaker 3: have the delusion either that like, oh, I don't want
- 9:47Speaker 3: them to hear about death. You know, don't want them
- 9:49Speaker 3: to hear about a family member died. Don't want them.
- 9:51Speaker 3: I remember when I was six years old, when I
- 9:54Speaker 3: killed a deer for the first time, and this is,
- 9:56Speaker 3: this is how my, my parents were with me. And
- 9:58Speaker 3: this is how my dad, I think they're a right
- 10:00Speaker 3: way to introduce it. The same way talking to your
- 10:02Speaker 3: children about sex. Don't just hide from it and pretend
- 10:05Speaker 3: it's not there. There's a right way to talk about it.
- 10:08Speaker 3: Talk like, talk about it, how it's real. And this,
- 10:11Speaker 3: and what, here's what God created it for. And this
- 10:12Speaker 3: is how children are made. And this is a part
- 10:14Speaker 3: of mommy and daddy's intimate relationship. But don't just pretend
- 10:18Speaker 3: it's not there because you set your children up for disaster.
- 10:21Speaker 3: When I was six years old, when I shot a
- 10:24Speaker 3: deer for the first time, and I remember at six
- 10:28Speaker 3: years old, standing there with my dad and the rifle
- 10:31Speaker 3: and the deer that I just shot. And my dad
- 10:33Speaker 3: reminded me, he says, it was both a firearm lesson
- 10:36Speaker 3: and a life lesson. He said, just a few moments ago,
- 10:39Speaker 3: this deer was alive and breathing. And now it's not, right?
- 10:42Speaker 3: This is what a firearm can do. And this is
- 10:44Speaker 3: the understanding of what life is. You can die and
- 10:48Speaker 3: life is over. Right. And so you want to make
- 10:51Speaker 3: sure you introduce this right relationship to your kids, because
- 10:55Speaker 3: if you give them this delusion until they're too old,
- 10:58Speaker 3: it becomes very scary for them. And I've watched the
- 11:00Speaker 3: same thing happen in adults where they maybe they had
- 11:04Speaker 3: a mortality moment, but they didn't read. They didn't remove
- 11:08Speaker 3: their delusion. They went through a hard time post delusion
- 11:11Speaker 3: and then they just returned to their delusion. And then
- 11:14Speaker 3: you have a health scare at 45, 50 years old
- 11:17Speaker 3: and it snaps you awake and you realize you haven't
- 11:19Speaker 3: been living your life correctly. Right. Yeah.
- 11:22Speaker 2: And I think this is where like, we have to
- 11:24Speaker 2: be reminded of the foundational truths. And, you know, when
- 11:30Speaker 2: we say this, it's, it sounds like, Oh yeah, of course.
- 11:32Speaker 2: But one of the things I've observed in you and
- 11:34Speaker 2: in Navy SEALs, like I don't want this to be
- 11:36Speaker 2: the Navy SEAL pedestal because I think sometimes people can
- 11:39Speaker 2: put it on, put Navy SEALs on a pedestal or, or, and,
- 11:42Speaker 2: obviously you on this podcast, but like, Oh, well that's
- 11:44Speaker 2: because he's a Navy seal as if somehow your genetics
- 11:47Speaker 2: are different and like pain doesn't affect you the same way.
- 11:50Speaker 2: It's like, no, what I've, what I've observed, there's never
- 11:53Speaker 2: a time for where, where there, the circumstances are right
- 11:57Speaker 2: to do the wrong thing. What that means is we
- 11:59Speaker 2: always do the right thing.
- 12:01Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 12:01Speaker 2: But you know, cause so many people, it's like, well,
- 12:02Speaker 2: we go to church. Oh man, you know what?
- 12:05Speaker 3: Like, you know, you know, you know where that comes from, Nick,
- 12:08Speaker 3: it's very similar to the mortality thing. The reason is,
- 12:12Speaker 3: that SEALs know we must do the right thing is
- 12:14Speaker 3: because what training does to SEALs is it breaks your
- 12:18Speaker 3: delusion that you're going to be able to get away
- 12:19Speaker 3: with it.
- 12:21Speaker 2: Well, yeah, but okay. Then that's so good because I
- 12:24Speaker 2: think people don't connect the consequences. You get quick consequences
- 12:27Speaker 2: in your training. A lot of times that by the
- 12:29Speaker 2: time that.
- 12:29Speaker 3: We experience consequences, which is why you discipline your children,
- 12:33Speaker 3: by the way, right?
- 12:34Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 12:34Speaker 3: Discipline your children when they're young so they can understand
- 12:37Speaker 3: the relationship to poor decision consequence and So that later
- 12:41Speaker 3: on in life, when life disciplines harshly, harsh discipline is, oh,
- 12:47Speaker 3: you did this wrong thing. That's okay. Keep going. Keep
- 12:49Speaker 3: running down the road. Keep running down the road. I'll
- 12:51Speaker 3: catch you tomorrow, right? Good parenting is, hey, you did
- 12:55Speaker 3: this small thing. Life wouldn't punish you on this for
- 12:57Speaker 3: a while. I'm going to give you a small punishment
- 12:59Speaker 3: so you learn. Right, exactly.
- 13:03Speaker 2: And so you say that and it sounds like, okay, yeah,
- 13:05Speaker 2: that's really good for disciplining your kids. But for us,
- 13:08Speaker 2: we have to understand, We are called, like, I don't
- 13:11Speaker 2: look at that Navy SEAL, like, obedient unto death, where
- 13:13Speaker 2: you guys will literally, you know, you guys will do
- 13:16Speaker 2: the right thing, even if it kills you. I don't
- 13:18Speaker 2: look at that and go like, oh, that's cool for
- 13:19Speaker 2: Navy SEALs. I think for Christians, this is how we
- 13:22Speaker 2: are all called to be about our adherence to the
- 13:25Speaker 2: truth of scripture. You said something recently that I've quoted
- 13:27Speaker 2: so many times, and I love it. It said, if
- 13:29Speaker 2: you don't structure your life around truth, pressure will structure
- 13:32Speaker 2: your life around circumstances. And when you said that, I
- 13:36Speaker 2: was like, man, it jumped out when you said that.
- 13:40Speaker 2: And it was like a highlighter in my mind. Structuring
- 13:42Speaker 2: your life around truth is the word of God. It
- 13:44Speaker 2: is so clear. And I think it's a shocker that
- 13:47Speaker 2: we forget this. Jesus Christ, the most important event in
- 13:51Speaker 2: the history of all of human timeline, that Jesus Christ
- 13:54Speaker 2: was crucified and resurrected. And because we have nice Easter
- 13:57Speaker 2: plays and because we all hear it so many times,
- 13:59Speaker 2: we get desensitized to it. Do not be the person
- 14:02Speaker 2: that loses the severity, the adherence to truth, the absolute
- 14:06Speaker 2: hanging on to the hope of glory. Every single person
- 14:09Speaker 2: that we read about in the New Testament, the one
- 14:11Speaker 2: thing that they were convinced about was who Jesus was
- 14:14Speaker 2: and that he really did rise. You can go through
- 14:16Speaker 2: all the stories and it was always like, man, he
- 14:18Speaker 2: really did rise. So who was he? That is the
- 14:21Speaker 2: crux of everything we believe. So if we have that
- 14:24Speaker 2: adherence to truth, our view of death is so different
- 14:29Speaker 2: because it's just part of eternity. It's entering into eternity.
- 14:32Speaker 2: And this is what we see. Paul talks about this
- 14:33Speaker 2: heavily in 1 Corinthians 15. He says, but if it
- 14:36Speaker 2: is preached that Christ has been raised from the dead,
- 14:38Speaker 2: How can some of you say that there is no
- 14:40Speaker 2: resurrection from the dead? If there's no resurrection of the dead,
- 14:43Speaker 2: then not even Christ has been raised. And if Christ
- 14:45Speaker 2: has not been raised, our preaching is useless. And so
- 14:49Speaker 2: is your faith. Literally, the entirety of our Christianity, if
- 14:53Speaker 2: you want to call it that, I'm going to say
- 14:54Speaker 2: our faith, the way that we live, is hinged on
- 14:57Speaker 2: the fact that Jesus was the firstborn of many, that
- 14:59Speaker 2: he would have many brothers, as Paul mentions, I believe,
- 15:01Speaker 2: in Romans. we are literally, this is the central point.
- 15:06Speaker 2: So when you understand that that's the central point, we
- 15:08Speaker 2: have a hope. Look, what we want to do is
- 15:11Speaker 2: we want to make sense of things. How does this,
- 15:13Speaker 2: this death feels so senseless. If someone dies young, we
- 15:16Speaker 2: really struggle with it because we have a timeline in
- 15:18Speaker 2: our mind of how death should go. And we want
- 15:20Speaker 2: to make sense of it. And here's the thing that
- 15:22Speaker 2: you have to, you have to do. You have to
- 15:24Speaker 2: let go of your desire to make sense of things
- 15:27Speaker 2: Because the truth of it is, we don't know what
- 15:28Speaker 2: happens in eternity. We live such a small sliver and
- 15:31Speaker 2: eternity is an unknown to us. We know we're going
- 15:34Speaker 2: to be with Jesus. We have slight glimpses of it,
- 15:36Speaker 2: but we have no idea what's going to happen. So
- 15:38Speaker 2: why don't we let God be God and be the
- 15:40Speaker 2: one who handles righteousness and justice and equity and all
- 15:43Speaker 2: the things that we want to make sense of with
- 15:45Speaker 2: our mind. So when you look at it like that,
- 15:47Speaker 2: whether it makes sense, whether it's tragic, whether it's a
- 15:50Speaker 2: great death as we would see it, whether it's a
- 15:51Speaker 2: bad death, just know it's just an entry point into eternity.
- 15:56Speaker 2: Because this is the victory that we can absolutely claim.
- 16:00Speaker 2: And understand, if someone dies, of course you're going to
- 16:03Speaker 2: miss them. But it's kind of like your friend moving
- 16:05Speaker 2: to a faraway country before we had all this technology
- 16:07Speaker 2: that you can still stay connected. It's like, man, I
- 16:10Speaker 2: don't know if I'll ever see that person again, but man,
- 16:12Speaker 2: I hope I do. Well, you know you will because
- 16:14Speaker 2: 1 Corinthians 15, 53 through 55, this is Paul talking
- 16:17Speaker 2: about what happens. And this is the conviction that we
- 16:20Speaker 2: all run with. For the perishable must clothe itself with
- 16:23Speaker 2: the imperishable. and the mortal with immortality. When the perishable
- 16:27Speaker 2: has been clothed, this is our bodies, with the imperishable,
- 16:30Speaker 2: and the mortal with immortality, then the saying that is
- 16:32Speaker 2: written will come true. Death has been swallowed up in victory. Where,
- 16:36Speaker 2: O death, is your victory? Where, O death, is your stink?
- 16:40Speaker 2: That is just the absolute victory of Christ that we
- 16:44Speaker 2: get to walk in. And when you have that mentality,
- 16:46Speaker 2: why would you ever be afraid of dying? If anything,
- 16:49Speaker 2: I hope that you would have the absolute fearlessness of
- 16:52Speaker 2: a person who, who is not concerned about anything and
- 16:55Speaker 2: knows that, man, we've got to run this race hard
- 16:58Speaker 2: because you're going to get one shot at it. And
- 17:01Speaker 2: amazingly to me, gee, Stoics grasped onto this. I don't
- 17:04Speaker 2: know how they grasped onto it without the understanding of
- 17:07Speaker 2: Christ's resurrection, but there's Epictetus has some epics quotes. I
- 17:11Speaker 2: guess that's why he was called Epictetus. I feel like
- 17:13Speaker 2: Bill and Ted there. But he said, I cannot escape death,
- 17:17Speaker 2: but at least I can escape the fear of it.
- 17:19Speaker 2: And it's like, oh yeah. Yeah. I don't want to
- 17:21Speaker 2: be a guy walking around controlled by fear of death.
- 17:24Speaker 3: What the Stoics, who were really a niche branch of
- 17:29Speaker 3: Greek thinking, what the Stoics had was they had captured
- 17:32Speaker 3: all of the principles, which reveal much of the glory
- 17:35Speaker 3: of God. You see much of the nature of God
- 17:38Speaker 3: through principles, through logic, through order. So they had caught
- 17:42Speaker 3: everything except the revelation of Christ. They caught everything except
- 17:46Speaker 3: the revelation of an eternal mindset. Yeah, so good. So good, man.
- 17:51Speaker 2: And you guys, I saw this quote, I thought it
- 17:53Speaker 2: was from the SEAL teams, but it's also from Epictetus.
- 17:55Speaker 2: It says, all defeat is psychological until death. Until death.
- 17:59Speaker 3: I love that so much, man. Well, it's a hard
- 18:02Speaker 3: dog mentality for sure, which is like, I didn't lose.
- 18:06Speaker 3: It's what you would call it, Monty Python. Oh, it's
- 18:10Speaker 3: a flesh wound.
- 18:12Speaker 2: Yeah, exactly. His arm's been chopped off. Well, all right, G,
- 18:16Speaker 2: give the bulletproof mindset. I think we've given it rooted
- 18:19Speaker 2: in scripture. And I hope that this is shifting some
- 18:22Speaker 2: perspectives for people because that's really what the outcome of
- 18:24Speaker 2: this episode is.
- 18:26Speaker 3: Well, this is such a great one to visit on
- 18:28Speaker 3: a short cast. We'll probably come around to some of
- 18:30Speaker 3: these thoughts in other larger episodes. But again, this is
- 18:34Speaker 3: about having a right relationship with death. The beginning of that,
- 18:38Speaker 3: which we've just covered, and I'm summarizing, the beginning of
- 18:40Speaker 3: that is don't hide from it. The things that you
- 18:43Speaker 3: hide from become monsters in your life. Don't hide from death.
- 18:47Speaker 3: Have a right relationship with it. especially, especially those of
- 18:51Speaker 3: you who have a relationship with Christ. What, what, what
- 18:55Speaker 3: measure of faith, what revelation of the gospel do you have?
- 18:59Speaker 3: If you have a relationship with Christ and you're afraid
- 19:02Speaker 3: of death, you're missing it. You're missing it. Okay. And
- 19:05Speaker 3: so I want to give just a couple of last
- 19:07Speaker 3: thoughts here on here's how you, this now that you
- 19:10Speaker 3: have that, well, you're, I'm assuming you have what we
- 19:12Speaker 3: just talked about of, I'm not afraid of death. I'm
- 19:15Speaker 3: not afraid of it because I know what happens after
- 19:17Speaker 3: I know who I am. I know where I'm going.
- 19:19Speaker 3: Once you have that, let me give you these last
- 19:21Speaker 3: two things of this is how to have a great
- 19:23Speaker 3: relationship with death for the rest of your life is one.
- 19:27Speaker 3: When you have that mortality moment, when you have that
- 19:30Speaker 3: perspective of I'm going to die one day, what you
- 19:32Speaker 3: realize is, you know, people say you're running out of time.
- 19:35Speaker 3: Time's infinite. Time actually goes on forever or until God
- 19:39Speaker 3: stops it. You're running out of life. The shot clock
- 19:43Speaker 3: is on your life. You'll die. Everything's going to keep going. Okay.
- 19:46Speaker 3: But you're running out of life every single day. You
- 19:48Speaker 3: have one life to live. Just one. What are you
- 19:52Speaker 3: going to do with it? Think about if anything I
- 19:55Speaker 3: gave you in your life. And I said, you have
- 19:58Speaker 3: one chance to see the Grand Canyon. I'm going to
- 20:00Speaker 3: take you to the Grand Canyon. You'll never get to
- 20:03Speaker 3: go again. This is your only time. How would you
- 20:06Speaker 3: treat it? Because I know if you've been to the
- 20:09Speaker 3: Grand Canyon, you maybe thought, oh, well, when I come back,
- 20:11Speaker 3: the next time I'll do this. And the next time
- 20:13Speaker 3: I'll do that. There's no next time for this life. Okay.
- 20:19Speaker 3: So you have to make sure you remind yourself of that.
- 20:23Speaker 3: It is one of the Stoic phrases, memento mori. One
- 20:26Speaker 3: day you will die. It's a reminder that Stoics said
- 20:28Speaker 3: to themselves, memento mori. One day you will die. And
- 20:32Speaker 3: it's reminding yourself, this is all that I've got. Have
- 20:35Speaker 3: the greatest marriage you could ever have. Live the greatest
- 20:37Speaker 3: life you could ever live. That's not some obscure definition
- 20:41Speaker 3: of what success is. It's making sure that you're the
- 20:44Speaker 3: greatest steward that you could be, that you chase and
- 20:46Speaker 3: have the greatest relationship with God that you could ever have,
- 20:49Speaker 3: that you have a deep relationship with him, that you
- 20:51Speaker 3: know who he is. Love your children well. Live your
- 20:54Speaker 3: life well. You have one life to live. If you
- 20:57Speaker 3: have the delusion that maybe there's going to be more time,
- 21:00Speaker 3: that maybe I won't die as soon as I thought,
- 21:02Speaker 3: you're wasting your life. And the second thing is this.
- 21:06Speaker 3: is that you would have an eternal perspective. Eternal perspective
- 21:11Speaker 3: is one, like this is the first part of like, look, yeah,
- 21:14Speaker 3: the death, where is your sting? Okay. That's great. That's
- 21:17Speaker 3: the first part of it. But really what it is,
- 21:19Speaker 3: what it's about is Paul in Romans 8 said, the
- 21:23Speaker 3: sufferings of this time are not worthy to be compared
- 21:27Speaker 3: with the glory, which shall be revealed. Okay. Such a
- 21:30Speaker 3: great verse. He said, Hey, your life, your life's hard
- 21:32Speaker 3: right now. Your life sucks. And by the way, this
- 21:34Speaker 3: is a guy who's been through what's way worse than
- 21:37Speaker 3: nearly every single person ever listened to show ever go through. Okay.
- 21:40Speaker 3: No one stoned you to death. No, you've not been
- 21:43Speaker 3: imprisoned wrongly. You've not been in prison for your faith.
- 21:46Speaker 3: And Paul ends up getting executed anyways. And I'm sure
- 21:49Speaker 3: he had a good attitude about it the day that
- 21:51Speaker 3: he died. Okay. The sufferings of this present time are
- 21:54Speaker 3: not worthy to be compared with the glory, which shall
- 21:56Speaker 3: be revealed. That's not Paul giving an opinion. This is scripture.
- 22:00Speaker 3: And what that means is, you know, life's tough sometimes. However,
- 22:04Speaker 3: the glory that's coming makes it all worth it. That's
- 22:08Speaker 3: if you live right. That's if you have an eternal perspective.
- 22:11Speaker 3: You can suffer and live wrongly for dumb things, okay?
- 22:15Speaker 3: But get your life focused on, I'm living for eternal glory.
- 22:19Speaker 3: I'm going to live a life that honors God, that
- 22:21Speaker 3: glorifies God. I'm not afraid of death. I'm afraid of nothing.
- 22:26Speaker 3: The only thing I fear, like Oswald Chambers says, when
- 22:29Speaker 3: you fear God, you'll fear nothing else. I fear the Lord.
- 22:32Speaker 3: I want to honor him. I'm going to live a
- 22:34Speaker 3: life that serves him and I'm afraid of nothing else.
- 22:36Speaker 3: And yeah, maybe it's going to hurt for a little while.
- 22:39Speaker 3: Maybe I'm going to take a few on the chin.
- 22:41Speaker 3: I don't care. It doesn't compare to the glory that's
- 22:44Speaker 3: going to be revealed. This is what an eternal perspective is.
- 22:47Speaker 3: You've got to start living your life understanding, not just
- 22:50Speaker 3: do I have this short time, but this short time
- 22:53Speaker 3: is preparation for what's to come. You know, if you
- 22:56Speaker 3: went through in the military, if you went through a
- 22:58Speaker 3: boot camp experience, if you went through a SEAL training
- 23:01Speaker 3: experience and you thought that was all that there was,
- 23:04Speaker 3: that would kind of suck. Right. Going through SEAL training like, hey, congratulations,
- 23:08Speaker 3: you completed the experience. Now go home. Right. Like, hold
- 23:12Speaker 3: on a second. I went through all this stuff because
- 23:15Speaker 3: I want to do the job, right? I didn't do
- 23:18Speaker 3: this because I just like suffering. I did this because
- 23:21Speaker 3: I believe in this country. I believe in the glory
- 23:24Speaker 3: of this nation. I believe in what it stands for.
- 23:26Speaker 3: I'm willing to suffer for it because it matters to me.
- 23:29Speaker 3: Now that I've been trained, deploy me. This is an
- 23:32Speaker 3: eternal perspective. God, use me. God, here I am. Send me.
- 23:36Speaker 3: I want to live a life that honors you, and
- 23:39Speaker 3: I'm preparing for what we're going to do in eternity.
- 23:41Speaker 3: That's an eternal perspective.
