- Lucas: Hey Luna, welcome back to Learn Dutch with Fexingo. Luna: Hey Lucas, happy to be here. Episode 122, can you believe it? Lucas: I know, it's amazing. And today we're going to a place nobody wants to go, but sometimes we have to. Luna: Oh no, is it the dentist again? Lucas: No, no, it's the pharmacy. But this time, we're going to talk about symptoms. How to tell the pharmacist what's wrong. Luna: Oh, that's useful. I always get nervous when I have to explain in Dutch. Lucas: Well, today we'll fix that. Let's start with a very common one: Ik heb hoofdpijn. Luna: Ik heb hoofdpijn. That means 'I have a headache,' right? Lucas: Yes! Ik heb hoofdpijn. Say it again. Luna: Ik heb hoofdpijn. Lucas: Perfect. Now, if you have a fever, you say: Ik heb koorts. Luna: Ik heb koorts. That sounds like 'I have fever'. Lucas: Exactly. Now, what if you're coughing? Ik hoest. Luna: Ik hoest. That's a verb, right? 'I cough'. Lucas: Yes, exactly. So if you go to the pharmacy and you have a cough, you say: Ik hoest. Luna: Ik hoest. Good. Lucas: Then you can ask: Hebt u iets tegen hoesten? That means 'Do you have something for coughing?'. Luna: Hebt u iets tegen hoesten? That's a long one. Let me try: Hebt u iets tegen hoesten? Lucas: Perfect. And if you have a headache, you can ask: Hebt u iets tegen hoofdpijn? Luna: Hebt u iets tegen hoofdpijn? That's good. So if I have a headache, I can say 'Ik heb hoofdpijn' and then ask 'Hebt u iets tegen hoofdpijn?'. Lucas: Yes! You've got it. Let's practice a little dialogue. Imagine you walk into the pharmacy. You say: Ik heb hoofdpijn. Hebt u iets tegen hoofdpijn? Luna: Ik heb hoofdpijn. Hebt u iets tegen hoofdpijn? Lucas: Great. And the pharmacist might say: Ja, hier is een medicijn. Neem er twee per dag. Luna: Okay, so 'yes, here is a medicine. Take two per day.' Nice. Lucas: By the way, before we continue, a quick honest thing—Fexingo is funded by listeners like you. A handful of people chip in monthly through buy me a coffee dot com slash fexingo, and that's what keeps these episodes coming. Luna: Yeah, it's true. Luna: Ik heb koorts. Lucas: And if you're coughing? Luna: Ik hoest. Hebt u iets tegen hoesten? Lucas: Perfect. Let's do a full scene. You walk in, you have a headache and a cough. What do you say? Luna: Uhh... Ik heb hoofdpijn en ik hoest. Hebt u iets tegen hoofdpijn en hoesten? Lucas: Wow, that's great! Combining them. So: Ik heb hoofdpijn en ik hoest. Hebt u iets tegen hoofdpijn en hoesten? Luna: That's a lot of words, but I think I can manage. Lucas: You can. And remember, the pharmacist will understand even if it's not perfect. So today we learned: Ik heb hoofdpijn, Ik heb koorts, Ik hoest, Hebt u iets tegen hoesten?, and Hebt u iets tegen hoofdpijn? Luna: That's five phrases. Let me repeat them all: Ik heb hoofdpijn. Ik heb koorts. Ik hoest. Hebt u iets tegen hoesten? Hebt u iets tegen hoofdpijn? Lucas: Excellent! You did it. So next time you're feeling under the weather, you know what to say. Luna: Yes, and I'll remember to practice. Thanks, Lucas! Lucas: Thanks, Luna. And thanks to our listeners. Keep practicing these phrases, and we'll see you next time on Learn Dutch with Fexingo.
