- 1:00It tells the tale of how a simple bodyguard job leads to the greatest dilemma
- 1:04in the life of one private investigator. Is available for the Kindle and also
- 1:10as an audiobook through audible dot Com or the iTunes store. Well, now
- 1:14it's time for us to take a listen to today's episode of The Saint.
- 1:19This one there was one lost episode between last week's show and this week's.
- 1:23The original air date August fourteenth of nineteen forty nine, and the title Greed
- 1:30Causes Murder. The Adventures of the Saint starring Vincent Price, the same based
- 2:00on characters created by Leslie Choker, wits unknown to millions from books, magazines,
- 2:05and motion pictures. The Robinhood of Modern crime has now transcribed for radio,
- 2:09starring Hollywood's brilliant and talented actor Vincent Price as the sin Hey, what's
- 2:24going on here? This is my car? No, no, no,
- 2:30hey, cut it out? What's the idea? And I let that man
- 2:32alone? Oh? You keep by this buddy album. Oh it ain't the
- 2:37same. It's your pronic but slightly ungrammatical Mac. Now what's the disturbance?
- 2:42They drew a prolong shot in my car, him and the other fellow.
- 2:45They should get out. They were taking your car. Bryan Mack wouldn't do
- 2:49a thing like that, now, would you? Man? No, of
- 2:51course not. No man's nuts. What Mac would do if he coveted his
- 2:53neighbor's JEALOPPI is plug him with a piece of lead pipe and drive off so
- 2:59the knife gets Wait, Max, you could satisfy my curiosity a little.
- 3:02Why should you want to steal this gentleman's old automobile when you've got nicer,
- 3:07newer ones to choose. Yes, mister Ashim, Yeah, ask me saying
- 3:12go ahead, and I'm gonna satisfy a little curiosity of my own. I
- 3:15didn't think you had any Mac. What shape did it take? I always
- 3:17wondered how you would look good good night, good night night, be seeing
- 3:23you too? You let him go? Yes, he convinced me that I
- 3:27should for now. There's nothing like a thirty two in the pocket of a
- 3:30known thug for winning an argument. Did you say there was another fellow in
- 3:35him? Yes? Run off when he heard you coming. It was a
- 3:38shame. Fellow tried to buy my car yesterday? Someone tried to buy this
- 3:43car. Oh sure, this fellow tried to buy it, and there was
- 3:46a woman made to offer too. You mean you actually refused? I ain't
- 3:51shelling until I find out why they want to buy it? Too bad?
- 3:53This fellow who tried to buy the car? Do you know his name?
- 3:55No? He he looked like a gentleman? And too? Did you found
- 3:59it concerting with felonous intent? With our just a parted friends? Eh?
- 4:03Tell me? Was he well dressed? An annoying little mustache place just over
- 4:08the sneer he wears for a mouth? She? How did you work?
- 4:13Our friend Mac does piecework for him? Fancy Dan Turner is his current alias?
- 4:17And that I think you don't keep up with such things. You're going
- 4:20to tell the police later, perade or something? To tell them right now?
- 4:25I've got a great thirst that needs quenching. First for knowledge, huh.
- 4:30Yeah, what's your name? And where do you live? Colline three,
- 4:34All two East eighth Street. Put your car and cold storage, old
- 4:40time and take care of yourself. Something tells me this is rats night out.
- 4:59Hello, mini back making book. I see you got the wrong joint,
- 5:02Saint, take a look around. I run a pool room. Interested
- 5:06in the horse. No, No, a man like I said, Saint,
- 5:10you got the wrong joint. His name is Mac. He hangs out
- 5:12here. Know where is he in the back room? I am the three
- 5:15monkeys, Saint, deef, dumb and blind. The only Mac I knows
- 5:18a truck. And if you don't mind, I'd like to look in your
- 5:21back room and see if he's parked there. I mind, but you won't
- 5:25even know. Smitty, you're a deef, dumb and blind. Oh have
- 5:28a hard Saint, I ain't got no back room. Besides, last time
- 5:31you dropped in my place, a lot of my customers started patronizing elsewhere,
- 5:35including you, Smitty. Remember I've only been back from the great Place a
- 5:40week and I ain't forgetting it. Oh, come on, Saint, be
- 5:43a good guy. Beat it. Huh say let him stay. Hello,
- 5:46Mac, I was hoping you were smart enough to go home and get some
- 5:48sleep. How could I sleep with you out roaming the streets? Mack?
- 5:51You know how I wor it? Yeah? Yeah, too much? What
- 5:56does he wants to you? Why I want to talk with Fancy Dan Turner?
- 6:02What about that? Let's not be coy, Mac, it doesn't become
- 6:04you. I want to ask Tanna why he's trying to steal a gelope from
- 6:09an old man. Well, what do you know? I got a surprise
- 6:14for you, Saint. I'll take it to him. The boys say you're
- 6:31looking for me, Saint. The boys are right, So you found me.
- 6:35So I understand you're interested in a certain old car. So what probably
- 6:41the smile and irishman is too? I've broken down nineteen twenty nine to Dan.
- 6:45Seems a little glow for a fast man like you, Fancy Dan.
- 6:48Well, maybe I'd like to go slow enough to read the billboards when I
- 6:51drive. What's it to you, Saint? That depends on what it is
- 6:55to you Turner? What's on the fire? You are the handle with Churis
- 7:00on this deal, and I don't want just anybody cutting in. You're a
- 7:02fouler upper. He've been stepping high in fancy free too long. Tenny,
- 7:06you're beginning to irritate me the feelings. Likewise, Saint, only I got
- 7:11more than fingers in my fist, and you haven't a nice gun. You're
- 7:14so bravely wearing turning. It must be a pretty big part to change a
- 7:17small time con artists like you into a fire breathing gunman. Big potatoes huh
- 7:24yeah, plenty, big saint, so big, I wouldn't hesitate to shoot
- 7:29at the slightest move, Am I clear? It couldn't be clear if you
- 7:31were a day ordered by the Chamber of Comings. Good. Oh, I
- 7:35ain't a palace, Saint, It's just a backroom of a pool porter.
- 7:39But please stay and be my guest, well for a little while. Anyway,
- 7:44where are the boys out? And they're wasting their time? Alan don't
- 7:47tell his old wreck some old men as stubborn. Colin seems like a hard
- 7:51man to intimidate. It all depends on who's doing the intimidating, Saint.
- 7:57Now, Max a chowderhead, and Smithy's even worse. But with the two
- 8:00boys together and you get a jab of work done, then I've adopted old
- 8:05man Collins as a friend. How big are you? You know how I
- 8:09feel about people who push other people around, Turner, especially when the guy
- 8:13getting the shoving is a friend. If I had a glass of beer,
- 8:16I'd cry into it. Sit back and relax, Saint. The boys will
- 8:20be back with what they want after soon enough, and maybe then I'll let
- 8:24you go home. You mean they're coming back with the car, Well,
- 8:26maybe not the whole car. Sit back and relax. Relax. Hey,
- 8:33hey, what are you doing sitting back with my chair to the wall?
- 8:35Turner? You want me to relax, don't you? Yeah? Hey,
- 8:39let go that your stay. As my old grandmother used to say, Turner,
- 8:46there's nothing as relaxing as a game of pool, particularly with a hoodlum's
- 8:50head as the cue ball. Colin's Colin's open up. You wouldn't be even
- 9:11the police knew, would you. No? No, I'm no more a
- 9:15policeman than you are. Old man Colin. Come in and be where it's
- 9:18come dead. Where's Colin? The old man? You see it? Where
- 9:24behind the sofa? If you have a mind to look at him, Nike
- 9:26is a quick look then very how every way beaten, stabbed and tortured,
- 9:33maybe even shop for all I know. Listen, for all I know,
- 9:37maybe you've got a gun with an empty chamber, for all I know.
- 9:39Bless me. No mean business doesn't allow it. That's what sort of business
- 9:45are you? In? Irish? A name so brilliant. When the job
- 9:48is pulled and the police go after the boy, so pull it, I
- 9:50make an end run and go after the swag, or at least part of
- 9:54it. I think, what's the swag? Here Colin's wallet and les there's
- 10:00four hundred grand in Now I'm afraid you'll find the old man a few cents
- 10:05short? Who killed him? Not I? How do I? Now?
- 10:09You don't hear? Right? I brought you here? Why I'm here about
- 10:13the old tar? Of course you want to buy it? Certainly, don't
- 10:16you say? Maybe you're not being cute? Maybe you really don't know about
- 10:22it? A bad one. Now, I'm greatly relieved. When I first
- 10:28saw you come through that door, I said to me, said, O'Brien,
- 10:33here comes some more competition. They see you're not I relieved, Laddy
- 10:37greatly relieved. Turner is competition and not eh. Yes, but Turner and
- 10:41his ugly ducklings are nothing compared to it. Who time I got here just
- 10:50a minute before you, Laddy, the old man was dead when I arrived.
- 10:52Beyond that, I know nothing. Get down for Brian Bray competition getting
- 11:03worse all the joy. I'll call a doctor. No, no, no
- 11:09thanks, lady. They they off this frolic. They can get you next.
- 11:15You're gonna jo you, mister. You're gonna friend the old man the
- 11:20car. But well, I guess I'll have to try another angle. This
- 11:28one pretty dead. I awakened mister Richards, you requested, mister Temple.
- 11:45You'll be right now, thank you. I hope the fire isn't too serious,
- 11:48serious enough to awaken mister Richard. Which plants is the fire? I
- 11:54think is the damage? Oh, the fire isn't in any plant, mister
- 11:56Richie. Aside of me, I'm burning up and I need your help out
- 12:01there. You sneak your way in here three o'clock in the morning by telling
- 12:03me there's a fire. Okay, who are you, Diamond Templar? Oh
- 12:07yeah, the saint. I've heard of you. If you have business with
- 12:11me, mister Templer, i'd suggest you form my secretary for an appointment.
- 12:15Meanwhile, there's no subject on earth can keep me from going back to bed,
- 12:18not even the subject of four hundred thousand dollars. Mister Richie, what
- 12:22do you know about it? Nothing other than there were stolen from you,
- 12:26mister Ritchie. That happened seven years ago. The criminal John Quayley was caught,
- 12:30tried and convicted. Now your pardon, I Claily worked for you.
- 12:33I believe he was my head accountant, and the money was never found.
- 12:35No, Quairley drew twenty years in the penitentiary. He never revealed where the
- 12:39money was hidden until the day he died. Died, Yes, two weeks
- 12:43ago in prison. And now, mister Templar, if you don't mind,
- 12:48I need my rest, I won't detain you much longer, mister Richie,
- 12:52just one or two more questions. Well, did Craily have a wife?
- 12:54Yes, he did, if he knew he were dying in prison. It's
- 12:58quite possible he made an ey had to give word to her to tell her
- 13:01whether money was hidden. He may have made the attempt, but he couldn't
- 13:03possibly have succeeded. He was too closely watched her. After all, four
- 13:07hundred thousand dollars there's a lot of money, A lot of money yes,
- 13:11she could almost buy a second hand car with it. If I hadn't been
- 13:15fully covered by insurance, my firm would have gone under in the face of
- 13:16a loss that large. And now, mister Temple, if I might ask
- 13:20a question, why this sudden urgency is three o'clock in the morning business?
- 13:26An old man was tortured to death. Then a fellow named O'Brien, who
- 13:30came calling on the old man, was shot to death, but the story
- 13:33was killed. O'Brien told me he was tracking down four hundred thousand dollars that
- 13:37had been stolen. Oh, I see, yeah, Irons, and checking
- 13:39back over how many people have ever had that amount stolen from you? To
- 13:43me? And I wonder what I've led you to, mister Temper. I
- 13:48wonder, mister Richard, I wonder, Yes, what is this, missus
- 14:07Quayling? What do you want? Several things, missus Quayley, like what
- 14:11a murderer, You've got the wrong apartment, mister, an old automobile,
- 14:15no sale anything else. Maybe you'll buy this, missus Quayling. Colin's was
- 14:18murdered a little while ago. Colin, Oh, the old man. Why
- 14:22someone wanted his car? Someone who evidently couldn't wait any longer for the newer
- 14:28miles. So I thought, Colin's car in your garage, missus quaynn,
- 14:31maybe you better come in as ross coming careful. I don't like you,
- 14:39mister kneling together a frame and you're trying to put my picture into its.
- 14:43Colin sold me that car when night. I could have bought a Cadillac for
- 14:48cheaper, mister, but I wasn't in any position to haggle. I know
- 14:52what do you know what I want to find out? I know that Colins
- 14:54cars. The car is worth about twenty dollars, but it's something else.
- 14:58It's worth in the neighborhood four hundred thousand dollars. And you know that's an
- 15:01awfully nice neighborhood. Nice and exclusive chiselers aren't invited to move in. I've
- 15:07been gathering that impression all evening. Well, yeah, I'm a settle in
- 15:13Torch. Well there's mask a few chisels, your hammer deal wires. Either
- 15:18you've gone to work for Henry Kaiser as a hand that customarily rocks the cradle
- 15:22is going in for rocking a space. I had to go into a hardware
- 15:24store to make a phone call, and I just couldn't leave without buying a
- 15:28few things. Fortunate you didn't make your call in an establishment to sell steam
- 15:33rollers. See you have a set of licenses, you see too much from
- 15:37Colin's giloppe, aren't they lie? So that's how queerly smuggled out is.
- 15:43You're getting off the close to a bullet in your head. Mister, give
- 15:46me those places. Better not take the license plates with you. Yes,
- 15:56this is quin, It's just he got to play them. Don't let him.
- 16:10Oh suh? Where where when Johnny work chap chop? Of course squee
- 16:26uh Colin O Brian And now now I have three reasons for wanting to meet
- 16:33a certain party back. See he don't stop sometimes when it's so early in
- 16:56the morning, saying because I run the way back to the garage. What
- 17:00brings you out early? Mac? Looking for a drunk to row? Just
- 17:03looking for you, saint, just looking for you. See here what I
- 17:06got in my head? Oh they're going to that coy steak and you again,
- 17:10Mac? All right, throw at the gun. Well what did you
- 17:11want me to do? Come go? Turned handsprings quote Shelley played the thin
- 17:15You have to speak for it, Mac, very funny look out. It
- 17:18shouldn't speak for itself. Saint. I in the gun one. You should
- 17:22get in that dear car. You have a most persuasive way of offering a
- 17:25fellow a lift. Mac. Yeah, yeah, a lyft right now to
- 17:29lift. Later on it may grow into a ride. Come on, where
- 17:33are we going? Mac? Back to our little gray home. In the
- 17:37rear of the pool room, Saint fancy Dan Turner wants he should thank you
- 17:41for showing him a new trick. Oh, it really is necessary. He
- 17:44feels like it is, sat He feels like it is. He's got a
- 17:48couple of tricks. He wants to show you Black farm in a curt him
- 17:52turns waiting. He's got very little patience. Nice to have you back with
- 18:11a Saint. I mischief from the looks of that bandage on your skull,
- 18:15Turner, I bet you wish I'd missed you. Not now, I don't,
- 18:18Saint. It's a nice feeling having you here, knowing that I owe
- 18:22you something. I pay my debt, Saint, I pay off that.
- 18:26I know O'Brien was paid off, though with missus Quayley paid off with lead
- 18:30checks. Oh when I say that innocent expression for the jewelry. Turner,
- 18:36you need everything you've got. Well, when were they killed, Saint?
- 18:38Okay, i'll do it for you. They were killed an hour or two
- 18:41after I so abruptly left you before. Oh well, I'll have to find
- 18:45another pigeon, Saint my alibi? Fat? How fat? Turner City Hospital,
- 18:51having remember the Saint embroidered where acoustic hit me, and Smitty and Mack
- 18:56were there too to see me through it. Hospitals have record, Saint,
- 19:00we're clean, We're clean. Then you've got a competitor you don't know about,
- 19:04Turner. Yeah, looks that way. For a job that was supposed
- 19:08to be as simple as this one, I got too many competitors. Wonder
- 19:11how come who fingered the job for you? Turner? Who told you Quayley
- 19:15got word out to his wife about where the money was? I got nothing
- 19:18for you, Saint Smitty, wasn't it? Smitty just finished a stretch up
- 19:22the creek. My guess is he ran into Quayley. Maybe he shared to
- 19:26sell with him. Now. But in the jail hospital they met, Smitty
- 19:30worked there. Willie was dying off his nut. Smitty made him talk.
- 19:34Yeah, and Smitty not being mentally suited for solo works. Throwed the pitch
- 19:40to you, Turner, for the price, of course, for money on
- 19:41the line. Yeah, hen geez to buy in on a four hundred thousand
- 19:45jobs. Well what are you driving at? What are your picking Smitty's bones
- 19:48for? I was just wondering, Turner, how much O'Brien tad Smitty for
- 19:52his life of this exclusive information and how much your other competitors shelled out the
- 19:57one who happily goes around killing people? What do you mean, you ask
- 20:00me? Tourney your palace, NITTI is the sort of rap that even rats
- 20:03On wraps. He saw Crailey's secret three times that we know. Thanks for
- 20:08a handicapping it for me, sat If you're really grateful, Turney, you
- 20:12can return the favorite by telling me what time. It's just five fifteen in
- 20:18the morning, Saint, But you ain't going nowhere. I have a date
- 20:19to keep afore six, Turney with your competitive Yeah, Saint, that's what
- 20:22you're saying. Maybe not Danny, What do you say we play a little
- 20:26pool while we're waiting for the board. Get away from that pool table.
- 20:29I ain't playing any games with you saying maybe pool was the wrong game.
- 20:32How about a game of pitch and cat what I pitch like it and you
- 20:37catch it like that? Hate to leave you all by yourself there in the
- 20:41side pocket, but like I said, I have a date to keep.
- 21:00Well, mister Ritchie, get enough sleep. Despite my interruption, I wasn't
- 21:07really asleep, and you're called on me, mister Templar. I know,
- 21:08mister Ritchie, your hair was a little too carefully combed for a man who's
- 21:11been suddenly awakened and told he's having a fire. You're very clever, mister
- 21:15TEMpl not clever enough to catch you before you committed three murders. Well,
- 21:19you're a Smitty's silent partner. See what low company's gotten you into, Richie.
- 21:25Yes, I see four hundred thousand dollars buried in the siding of this
- 21:29elevator shaft. And for the help of this a settlement torch, it'll be
- 21:32all mine. A very ingenious fellow, Quilly, and I think the money
- 21:37never left this building, the place where Johnny was. Yes, he was
- 21:42ingenious. He's very smart of him to use his prison job making automobile license
- 21:48plates as a means of smuggling out the information to his wife. How did
- 21:51he do it? Richie, very simple template. There's an extra piece of
- 21:53thin metal in this particular plate, forming a sort of pocket. An inside
- 21:59the pocket a note on se red paper telling poor missus Quayley how to get
- 22:02the money. Of course, once he managed to tell her the number of
- 22:04the license plate, well the rest was easy, wasn't it. Yeah,
- 22:07all poor missus Quayley had to do was ask the Motor Vehicle Bureau to whom
- 22:11the plate was a sign mister Collins in this instance, or old fellow,
- 22:17mister Temple, would you mind joining me here in the chaft Piez, Yes,
- 22:22right on top of the elevator. I'd like to keep an eye on
- 22:23you while I finished burning out this metal petition. You see, I've only
- 22:27until six o'clock when this elevator is switched on downstairs. Oh well, I
- 22:32come, come in the shaft Fez. Well really, I have a gun,
- 22:34mister Templer. Oh well, that makes it official. Here we are,
- 22:41Temple. Mister Templer, I wouldn't want anything to happen to you,
- 22:45anything accidental, that is. You know, it's funny. I've known you
- 22:48such a short time, and I have exactly the same sentiments towards you.
- 22:52I've never been astride the top of an elevator before, Richie, and we're
- 22:56right near the top of the chef. Yes, I don't mean to worry
- 22:59you, Templar, but when this elevator power turns on in a few minutes,
- 23:03it will rise to the top before it descends. How's your treasure hand
- 23:07coming, Ritchie? Almost finished? One last strip of metal to cut away
- 23:11and the partition will come off. Then we'll decide. You're a fate,
- 23:14mister Templar, You're future. Here it goes a last blow. It's there,
- 23:25it's there. I see it. Four hundred thousand dollars in currency,
- 23:29Templar, think of it. Think of it. You think of it,
- 23:30Richie, and also think of how much blood was filled on it. Preaching
- 23:33Templar. You I never thought the elevator Richie. Maybe it came to work
- 23:38a little early today. My money, my money, Come on, Richie,
- 23:44come on, get off. No, there's still some money left here.
- 23:47I want it, I want it all all. Come on, we've
- 23:48got to get off. Jump Ritchie, jump out all my money. I
- 23:52want to see you fool all right. I yes, Richy, you saved
- 24:03your money, and you saved the States and money too. I'm sure you
- 24:07didn't plan on saving the cost of your execution. You have been listening to
- 24:19another adventure of the Saints, the robin Hood of modern Crime. Now Here
- 24:25is our star of Vincent Price. These immortal words of Avid, translated from
- 24:29the Latin, expressed quite well. Indeed the justice of our mister Ritchie's fate.
- 24:34Nor is there any juster law than that the contrivers of death should perish
- 24:40by their own contrivances. This is Vincent Price inviting you to join us again
- 24:45next week at this same time for another exciting adventure of the Saint. Good
- 24:49Night. Tonight's script of the Saint was written by Michael Kranwoy. Our cast
- 25:10included Loreene Tuttle, Barney Phillips, Tony Barrett, Bred Howard and Daniel Hurlehey.
- 25:14The music was composed and conducted by Harry Zimmermann The Saint of the James
- 25:18L. Safier production, and was transcribed and directed by Thomas A. Mcavini.
- 25:23All your Saints fans will be glad to know that the Saint's comic books
- 25:26are on. Say that, all New fans, you're announcer Merril Rodd.
- 25:32This is a mutual broadcasting system welcome back. Well, uh, not truly
- 26:00enjoyed this episode, and just a very enjoyable performance by Price, playing the
- 26:06Saint with equal parts humor, cleverness, and also a genuine concern for others.
- 26:12And this is one thing that does scent the Saint apart from most of
- 26:17the detectives we hear about. For most of them, crime is their business.
- 26:22For the Saint, it's generally going to be a personal interest in justice
- 26:27or righting wrongs, and they do a good job of taking us into the
- 26:32world. Now, one thing I did want to mention here, Well,
- 26:36first I should mention the previous episode, the lost episode was rare painting smugglers,
- 26:42but they've referenced both in this episode and in the last one. The
- 26:49Saint comic book. Now that comic book has actually fallen into the public domain,
- 26:57and if you like to read comics, you can download that from Digital
- 27:03Comic Museum dot com or just read it on the website. And I never
- 27:07read through the comics they have available there. And The Saint is actually a
- 27:11pretty interesting crime slash detective comic. And I'll post a link to it in
- 27:18the over at Great Detective's Facebook page. But the website is digital Comic Singular
- 27:30Museum dot com. And the Saint Comics were published by Avon and they were
- 27:37not to be confused with the Cosmetic Company. And there were twelve issues published
- 27:42between nineteen forty seven and nineteen fifty two, and there were a few comic
- 27:48book titles like that that were not published with regularity. Also find similar irregularity
- 27:56in the Abbot and Costello comic from Saint John Publishing. Well, that will
- 28:02do it for today. We will be back tomorrow with easy money, and
- 28:07then be sure and listen again next Monday for another episode of the Saint.
