- 0:00Chapter 14 from the book of Jeremiah.
- 0:04Let's get started with a prayer and to read another part of
- 0:08scripture that really is all about why we read scripture.
- 0:12The verse comes from Second Timothy chapter 3 verse 16.
- 0:19All Scripture is God breathed and is useful for teaching,
- 0:24rebuking, correcting and training in righteousness.
- 0:30This is something we should Well it continues in 17 so that the
- 0:35servant of God may be thoroughly equipped for every good work.
- 0:41So the outcome we can see from here is that God wants those who
- 0:47read scripture to be equipped to do good work.
- 0:52So God wants to take all of this information that we're reading
- 0:56and bring about something within us that will be good for people,
- 1:02for us. So dear Lord, please let the
- 1:06Holy Spirit work within us and be with us.
- 1:10As we read through Jeremiah chapter 14, we ask this in Jesus
- 1:14name, Amen. This is the word of the Lord
- 1:19that came to Jeremiah concerning the drought.
- 1:23So look at this already. It's there's a drought that
- 1:27happened and that's a natural occurrence.
- 1:31But all of a sudden the word of the Lord came to Jeremiah and it
- 1:35was regarding this drought. So it was about the drought,
- 1:39like probably why it came about. And we have to remember that God
- 1:44is in control of everything. Ultimately, He allows some bad
- 1:51things to happen and all I've found in Scripture, and if
- 1:56anybody else wants to challenge me and find another reason why
- 2:01God does things, then I'm open to it because I've, I've been
- 2:05looking at Scripture, you know, again, to learn from it and and
- 2:10to learn like why do that's a question that everybody asks.
- 2:13Why do bad things happen? Well, bad things certainly
- 2:18happen because of evil. God allows evil because of free
- 2:23will, because he's given free will to those in the heavenly
- 2:28realm as well as people. So all these beings have free
- 2:34will and can choose to do evil. So it's because of the choice
- 2:40that's available, the decision that people make and that
- 2:44spiritual beings make, that evil can happen in our world today.
- 2:50In God's future Kingdom, there will be no evil.
- 2:53It will be isolated from, it'll be separated from.
- 2:57And that's what all of this that we are experiencing right now is
- 3:01leading us to. When Jesus returns and the
- 3:04Kingdom of God is present on earth, then, well, there still
- 3:11will be during Jesus's reign, there still will be some evil
- 3:15occurring. But after that period, there's
- 3:181000 years still in the future where there will be some evil
- 3:22present. But after that there will be no
- 3:27evil, but you'll have Jesus reigning and there's going to be
- 3:29peace on earth. So I think there's still going
- 3:32to be some people who are not doing things the right way, but
- 3:37they're learning during that time, but it won't be as bad as
- 3:41what it is right now. So anyway, not to get too far
- 3:44down the path on that, which I already did, but let's just
- 3:49remember that God is ultimately in control of everything that
- 3:55happens. And He either allows it to
- 3:57happen, He stops it from happening sometimes.
- 4:02But when he does allow it to happen, what I found in
- 4:05Scripture is that there were two things.
- 4:07It was #1 it was a consequence of someone's decision or it's,
- 4:15it's a consequence of an action, you know, something that
- 4:20somebody did. So that's why it happens.
- 4:23So God allows it to happen. He doesn't necessarily make it
- 4:27happen, but sometimes he does make it happen.
- 4:29Or sometimes he uses people's desires that are evil to bring
- 4:36judgement upon something. So sometimes bad things happen
- 4:40as consequences to decisions, but then other times God does
- 4:47test us. It tells us in Scripture that he
- 4:50tests us to, I guess, find our true motivation.
- 4:54God certainly knows he doesn't he, he knows everything.
- 5:02So it's not like he needs to find out what we're going to do,
- 5:07but it's almost like for us, like we need to see, I don't
- 5:12know. I guess it's, I don't know if
- 5:15that all makes sense to me either as I say it, but there is
- 5:20a testing, there's a testing here while we are on earth and
- 5:24we get choices and God gave us free will and we can either do
- 5:30what we can. Either our actions will either
- 5:34be within God's will or outside of God's will and God allows it
- 5:41to be either way. And and that basically
- 5:46solidifies where we end up in eternity by the decisions we
- 5:52make, the choices we make, the actions we take.
- 5:57And I'm not saying this is a works based how we get into the
- 6:02Kingdom of God. Jesus was very clear though,
- 6:05that said that, and no one, unless you were born again, you
- 6:10cannot enter the Kingdom of God. So we need the Holy Spirit on
- 6:15our own. This is a good reason to say
- 6:18like why we can't do it by ourselves because we can keep
- 6:23trying and we might be good for a while and then we'll, you
- 6:25know, fall down. We, you know, we don't, we're
- 6:27not successful in what we're attempting to do, but the power
- 6:32of the Holy Spirit of God is what enables us to do the things
- 6:38that we can't do on our own, to abide in God's will, to do God's
- 6:45will. We may not be capable of it on
- 6:48our own, but when we invite the Holy Spirit of God to dwell
- 6:53within us and we ask for this help from God, from Jesus, Jesus
- 7:00will receive the Holy Spirit from the Father and will give it
- 7:03to us. He gives it to whomever he
- 7:04pleases. And as Jesus said, I am the way,
- 7:08the truth and the life, and no one comes to the Father except
- 7:11through me. That's, you know, how we get
- 7:14received. The Holy Spirit is through Jesus
- 7:17and Jesus determines who he will give the Holy Spirit to.
- 7:20And it depends on our sincere desires.
- 7:26Do we really want to do God's will or is it just lip service
- 7:30to God? And Jesus sees that, He knows
- 7:33that, and that's how he, well, I'm not going to say that's how
- 7:38he decides because I don't know how Jesus decides.
- 7:41But it, it is definitely sincerity that people can go
- 7:47through all the actions outwardly so, but their hearts
- 7:51are not changed and they don't receive the Holy Spirit, but
- 7:56people who are very sincere do. And that's supported through
- 7:59evidence in the Bible. So anyway, let's go back.
- 8:03I went way off on a tangent again.
- 8:05But these things are important to and out from Scripture.
- 8:10But again, this is about drought that comes.
- 8:13And a word of God comes to Jeremiah about the drought.
- 8:17Judah mourns her city's languish.
- 8:20They wail for the land. A cry goes up from Jerusalem.
- 8:26The nobles send their servants for water.
- 8:29They go to cisterns but find no water.
- 8:32They return with their jars unfilled.
- 8:34Dismayed and despairing, they cover their heads.
- 8:38The ground is cracked because there is no rain in the land.
- 8:43The farmers are dismayed and cover their heads.
- 8:46Even the dough in the field deserts her newborn fawn because
- 8:51there is no grass, while donkeys stand on the barren heights and
- 8:56pant like jackals. Their eyes fail for lack of
- 9:00food. Although our sins testify
- 9:05against us, do something, Lord, for the sake of your name, for
- 9:11we have often rebelled. We have sinned against you.
- 9:15You are the hope of Israel. It's saviour in times of
- 9:20distress. Why are you like a stranger in
- 9:24the land, like a traveller who stays only a night?
- 9:28Why are you like a man taken by surprise, like a warrior
- 9:32powerless to save? You are among us, Lord, and we
- 9:36bear your name. Do not forsake us.
- 9:40This is what the Lord says about the people.
- 9:44They greatly love to wander, they do not restrain their feet,
- 9:48so the Lord does not accept them, and he will now remember
- 9:53their wickedness and punish them for their sins.
- 9:58Then the Lord said to me, Do not pray for the well-being of this
- 10:02people. Although they fast, I will not
- 10:05listen to their cry. Though they offer burnt
- 10:08offerings and grain offerings, I will not accept them.
- 10:12Instead I will destroy them with the sword, famine and plague.
- 10:19Now I notice that a lot of times what happens in the Old
- 10:24Testament happens again in the future.
- 10:27Like God does these same things. There's very strong or similar
- 10:33patterns. So the end times have the same
- 10:37thing as the seals get open there, there's war, then there
- 10:44is, it sounds more to me like inflation or scarcity.
- 10:49So that could be famine too. And then there is, you know, the
- 10:53death that follows and the sword, you know, the sword is
- 10:57war, and drought is the result of no rain, which brings about
- 11:03no food, which brings about famine.
- 11:05So God uses these naturally occurring events to humble
- 11:13people, to make, you know, people then realize that they
- 11:18are not in the control of all this and that they need God.
- 11:23And so hopefully, I think, you know, with all these things, it
- 11:27seems very clear in Scripture that God does these things as
- 11:32punishment, but also, and more importantly so, to bring people
- 11:38to repentance because God doesn't want this to happen to
- 11:42people. He cares very much for people
- 11:45and he doesn't want this to be the outcome.
- 11:48But people get so hard headed and so much in their own ways
- 11:53and not submit it to God that he needs to do something big to
- 11:58shake him up. And if people don't respond to
- 12:02that, it you know that that's you know, this is like God's
- 12:06calling his his his final calling to some people.
- 12:12You know, they're just about on the brink of death.
- 12:15Now. Are they going to turn to him or
- 12:17are they going to persist in their rebellion towards Him?
- 12:22Will there be any repentance? And this is kind of like the
- 12:25final call from God. Now going back to Scripture,
- 12:29verse 13. Well, actually I'm going to
- 12:32pause for a minute because there's some study Bible
- 12:34questions and answers. So I will read what it has.
- 12:38How did cisterns hold water? Cisterns were covered.
- 12:42Were covered pits cut into rock or clay to catch and store
- 12:47rainwater? They were critical for people
- 12:49living in arid regions and sometimes symbolized security.
- 12:54Jeremiah used this image before describing leaky cisterns that
- 12:58could not hold water to illustrate the preference the
- 13:03people had for false gods when they could have had the one true
- 13:08God who was like a spring of fresh water.
- 13:13Why did the people cover their heads?
- 13:15Covering one's head was an ancient Near East, Near Eastern
- 13:19expression of grief and may have come from a desire to mourn in
- 13:25private or to hide one's tears. It became a custom for people in
- 13:30mourning to cover their heads, just as mourners today wear
- 13:34black. Why did Jeremiah invoke God's
- 13:38name? Names were often used to
- 13:42describe a person's nature or character, not just to label or
- 13:47identify a person. Names could even be changed to
- 13:51reflect a major life change. Jacob, for example, became
- 13:56Israel. God, however, never changes.
- 14:00Those who blamed God for their problems were attack, attacking
- 14:04the character of his name, saying he was no longer
- 14:08faithful. Jeremiah prayed that God would
- 14:11act not according to what the people deserved, but according
- 14:16to all that his name said he was.
- 14:20If God was like a stranger, how was He among them?
- 14:24Judah's calamities made it seem to the people as if God was
- 14:28unknown. The real problem, however, was
- 14:30not that God had abandoned Judah, but that the people had
- 14:34distanced themselves from Him. Their sin had separated them
- 14:40from God through his, though His presence was among them in the
- 14:46temple and the ark of the Covenant.
- 14:50Is it sometimes wrong to pray? God told Jeremiah not to pray
- 14:55for the for the people because they had already been judged.
- 15:01They had refused to repent while they had the opportunity.
- 15:06Now it was too late. God emphasized his resolve by
- 15:10saying, in effect, I don't want to hear any more about it.
- 15:14My mind is made-up. So I think that's really
- 15:17important for us to think about as well as God does.
- 15:24You know, there's there's times where he will you know, he's
- 15:29given us enough, enough opportunities.
- 15:32How many more opportunities he is he going to get give us?
- 15:37And are we going to test God like that?
- 15:39Are we going to say, well, he always gives opportunities, So
- 15:41I'm just going to keep on doing this and help forgive me.
- 15:43He's forgiven before. That's what the Bible's all
- 15:45about forgiveness. Well, there's a certain point,
- 15:48you know, and God can, you know, that's kind of like pride, like
- 15:52a person who's, you know, that's thinking of, think about like is
- 16:00God, you know, it's pretty prideful if somebody would say
- 16:05God always forgives. And I'm not worried about it.
- 16:08I'll just ask for forgiveness and then, you know, receive
- 16:12forgiveness when I'm ready. That's that's kind of making
- 16:15yourself God and not respecting who God is.
- 16:21And God sees all those things. You know, we as people do not
- 16:24see that stuff with other people.
- 16:28So people can deceive us about where they are with God, but God
- 16:32knows the person's heart and that's all that matters, a
- 16:37relationship between God and a person and the only person you
- 16:42know, we're not to judge other people.
- 16:43We're all on different journeys, if you want to call it that,
- 16:48with God. Our relationship with God is a,
- 16:53a process. It's individual.
- 16:54We're not going to all come to the same level of our faith at
- 16:59the same time, and God knows that.
- 17:03And the most important thing is not necessarily how we're
- 17:08thinking other people are, but how we're looking at ourselves.
- 17:12Where are we with God? What are we doing?
- 17:15Because that's all. That's the only person that we
- 17:17have to answer for. We can't.
- 17:21We aren't responsible for anyone else.
- 17:23We are only responsible for ourselves.
- 17:26So the most important thing is where are we with God?
- 17:30And that's who we're going to have to answer for is all of our
- 17:34own actions. So I'm going to go back to
- 17:39verse, not go back to, but start again at verse 13.
- 17:43But I say a last southern God, the prophets keep telling them
- 17:48you will not see the sword or suffer famine.
- 17:52Indeed, I will give you lasting peace in this place.
- 17:56So again, God does promise some time in the future, but this is
- 18:02after Jesus returns and Jesus hasn't returned.
- 18:05So there isn't going to be a lasting peace, anything that any
- 18:10kind of peace that we see right now is only going to be
- 18:12temporary. And that's kind of probably
- 18:16disheartening to people. And the people who are behind
- 18:19these peace efforts probably don't want to hear that or maybe
- 18:24don't believe that, or maybe they do.
- 18:27And maybe it's all a deception too, but if you're counting on
- 18:32peace happening and you're relying on peace agreements so
- 18:38that everyone can live globally in peace and security, the Bible
- 18:44warns US against that. It's not going to happen.
- 18:46Jesus hasn't returned yet. But hopefully during the time of
- 18:52peace, people can turn to God, start changing their lives.
- 18:56The only way that we really will have peace is if every single
- 19:00person had the Holy Spirit reciting and residing within
- 19:04them. So, and that's not going to
- 19:07happen until eternity. There has to be a separation of
- 19:10evil, of good and evil. So we don't, we won't see this
- 19:16everlasting peace, even the until Jesus returns.
- 19:23And and then there's people you know who you know, they're going
- 19:26to quote Scripture and they're going to quote things about
- 19:29peace, but you have to know or understand or read the whole
- 19:34Bible to realize that that doesn't come until Jesus
- 19:40arrives. Then the Lord said to me, the
- 19:44prophets are prophesying lies in my name.
- 19:47I have not sent them or appointed them or spoken to
- 19:50them. They are prophesying to you
- 19:53false visions, divinations, idolatries, and the delusions of
- 19:58their own minds. Therefore, this is what the Lord
- 20:02says about the prophets who are prophesying in My name.
- 20:05I did not send them, yet they are saying no sword or famine
- 20:10will touch this land. Those same prophets will perish
- 20:15by sword and famine, and the people they are prophesying to
- 20:20will be thrown out in the streets of Jerusalem because of
- 20:23the famine and sword. There will be no one to bury
- 20:27them, their wives, their sons and their daughters.
- 20:30I will pour out on them the calamity they deserve.
- 20:35So again, this is where we, all of us, need to make sure that we
- 20:41are not being deceived. Anyone, especially anyone who
- 20:46claims to receive words from God.
- 20:50We truly need to pray about anything like that because I
- 20:58we've all recently seen a deception because there was
- 21:04September 23rd and 24th, there was this rapture that was going
- 21:09to occur. And this man said that Jesus
- 21:11told him that and he, he was so confident and he did appear like
- 21:19he was a faithful man of God in, in some, you know, of what I
- 21:24heard. And so it, you know, I wasn't, I
- 21:29was skeptical of what he said, but I didn't want to be prideful
- 21:32saying, OK, well, God couldn't do that.
- 21:34He could, but we'll see what happens.
- 21:36Well, it didn't happen. And, and I feel bad for the guy
- 21:40because he sincerely believed that it was going to happen.
- 21:46And, and there were many other people who also were saying, I
- 21:49got confirmation from God about the same thing.
- 21:51Like, you wouldn't believe the number of people that supposedly
- 21:55received confirmation from God about this.
- 21:59And that's really something that is probably very eye opening,
- 22:04people that they will now see that it didn't happen, it wasn't
- 22:10true. And if you receive confirmation
- 22:13from God, who did you really receive it from?
- 22:17Was it your own mind or was it some deceptive spirit that was
- 22:21giving this confirmation? And and it's, it's a, a call for
- 22:28all of us that we really need to, I would, I guess maybe not
- 22:34all of us. Well, yeah, for all of us.
- 22:36We, we can't be deceived by people who are saying they are
- 22:39hearing from God. We really need to get to a point
- 22:43in our own lives where we know the word of the Holy Spirit.
- 22:48We know when it's the Holy Spirit and and any time that we
- 22:53do get a word, we probably always need to be cautious about
- 22:58it because it could be our own mind, it could be deception and
- 23:04we just need to wait and see if it happens.
- 23:07But make sure that it aligns with what God says and do the
- 23:11right thing. The good thing like what would
- 23:13be God's will regarding this word?
- 23:17And I think that should be helpful for people just to
- 23:20really pray about it and also just think logically, like how
- 23:25would this benefit anyone if we shared this with anyone, what
- 23:32would God's intention be and and seek God for it.
- 23:37So hold back any of those words of God unless it there's a
- 23:44really good stated purpose. We basically have everything
- 23:50that we need from as far as the word of God within Scripture and
- 23:55we really don't need outside things God does.
- 24:01I mean, I myself have experienced dreams and words
- 24:05that, you know, that I think are from God that are actually
- 24:08Scripture that's found in the Bible that have occurred in my
- 24:12dreams. And, and I have thought about
- 24:15like, why would God do that? And the response that happened
- 24:20with me was it increased my faith.
- 24:23It drew me closer to God. It created a sense of urgency
- 24:28within me that I needed to be within God's will.
- 24:33And I also felt a warning from God that time is getting closer
- 24:41to the return of Jesus. And I don't really know when my
- 24:45dreams actually alluded. That was really soon, which put
- 24:48me on this path of what I'm doing right now, why I created
- 24:51this podcast and everything. And we'll only see what happens.
- 24:57But it's never harmful to prepare ourselves for the
- 25:02eventual return of Jesus. We don't really know for sure
- 25:06when it's going to be. And I could have been deceived
- 25:10by my own thoughts or by a deceiving spirit that it's going
- 25:16to happen really, really soon. And again, there's other people
- 25:19who are thinking it's going to happen really, really soon.
- 25:22And thankfully I only have one more full year to wait.
- 25:27And then if it doesn't happen by then I'm, I'm good, then I can
- 25:30just go back to being, you know, a sin that follows God's staying
- 25:36in the word and, and just, you know, sharing the word of God
- 25:41being, I guess more normal about it.
- 25:44But I did really feel like the sense of urgency at the times
- 25:48that I was having dreams, which they actually just stopped a few
- 25:53months ago. I haven't had a dream for a
- 25:56little bit now, which they were occurring very, very regularly.
- 25:59And I had like 80 different dreams.
- 26:01So we'll see what happens. But the most important part is
- 26:08that any, every one of us has a, a positive relationship with God
- 26:14that we don't fear. If Jesus returns, we're not
- 26:19going to fear that we're going to welcome Jesus because we're
- 26:21going to know that our relationship with God is solid
- 26:24and that we don't have anything to fear because we are a child
- 26:28of God. That's where we all should be
- 26:30right now. So let's go back to verse 17.
- 26:35Speak this word to them. Let my eyes overflow with tears
- 26:39night and day without ceasing for the virgin daughter.
- 26:43My people has suffered A grievous wound, a crushing blow.
- 26:47If I go into the country, I see those slain by the sword.
- 26:52If I go into the city, I see the ravages of famine.
- 26:56Both prophet and priest have gone to a land they know not.
- 27:01Have you rejected Judah completely?
- 27:03Do you despise Zion? Why have you afflicted us so
- 27:07that we cannot be healed? We hope for peace, but no good
- 27:11has come for a time of healing. But there is only terror.
- 27:18Then there in the Bible it says, who were these false prophets?
- 27:23Most likely these false prophets were the prophets of Baal, whose
- 27:27worship was centered in Anathoth.
- 27:31That's within the tribe of Benjamin, which is where
- 27:35Jeremiah came from. Jeremiah's hometown.
- 27:39Who were true or were true prophets scarce in Judah?
- 27:43Yes, Judah had many false prophets who lulled people into
- 27:49complacency, causing them to doubt Jeremiah's valid warnings.
- 27:54Jeremiah said more about false prophets than anyone else in
- 27:58Scripture because false prophets did so much damage and distorted
- 28:04the truth of God's message back to Scripture.
- 28:10We acknowledge our wickedness, Lord, and the guilt of our
- 28:13ancestors. We have indeed sinned against
- 28:16You for the sake of Your name. Do not despise us.
- 28:20Do not dishonor Your glorious throne.
- 28:23Remember Your covenant with us and do not break it.
- 28:27Do any of the worthless idols of the nations bring rain?
- 28:31Do the skies themselves send down showers?
- 28:35No, it is you, Lord our God. Therefore our hope is in you,
- 28:41for you are the one who does all this.
- 28:44And that's the end of chapter 14.
- 28:47There's one more question in answer.
- 28:49Why did Jeremiah remind God of His promise?
- 28:52God doesn't forget his promises, and he doesn't need reminders.
- 28:57But Jeremiah was desperate. He knew he couldn't ask for
- 29:01God's help on the basis of Judah's faithfulness because
- 29:06Judah had broken the covenant. But he could appeal to God's
- 29:11character, which God had demonstrated through the
- 29:15covenant. Jeremiah hoped God's
- 29:18faithfulness alone might uphold the broken agreement.
- 29:24And that ends chapter 14.
