Transcript
- 0:51SPEAKER_00: Hello everyone and welcome back to Eden Haddock Total Talent.
- 0:56SPEAKER_00: I am your host, Eden Haddock, Head of Talent and People Experience at Movember.
- 1:02SPEAKER_00: And today, yeah, we'll we'll do something a little bit different.
- 1:07SPEAKER_00: Because this isn't just another episode of Eden Haddock Total Talent.
- 1:11SPEAKER_00: This is the final episode of series three.
- 1:14SPEAKER_00: And what a series it's been.
- 1:16SPEAKER_00: We've challenged the way we think about recruitment, talent acquisition, people experience, technology, leadership, and the future of work.
- 1:27SPEAKER_00: We've had some uncomfortable conversations.
- 1:30SPEAKER_00: We've challenged a few sacred cows.
- 1:33SPEAKER_00: And hopefully, well, it's made us all think a little bit differently about the profession we all work in.
- 1:42SPEAKER_00: But today, I want to talk about something much bigger than recruitment, something much bigger than HR technology.
- 1:50SPEAKER_00: And quite frankly, something much more important than any job title, workforce strategy, or artificial intelligence platform.
- 2:00SPEAKER_00: I want to talk about men's health.
- 2:03SPEAKER_00: Because on the first of November, this podcast is going to do something it has never done before.
- 2:11SPEAKER_00: We're launching series four, season four.
- 2:16SPEAKER_00: And we're doing it with a pretty ambitious challenge.
- 2:22SPEAKER_00: Thirty days, thirty episodes, one mission.
- 2:27SPEAKER_00: Thirty consecutive days of podcasting.
- 2:31SPEAKER_00: Thirty opportunities to start conversations.
- 2:36SPEAKER_00: Thirty opportunities to grow an audience.
- 2:39SPEAKER_00: And then hopefully thirty opportunities to make a genuine difference to men's health.
- 2:47SPEAKER_00: And there is a target attached, it's quite ambitious.
- 2:51SPEAKER_00: $20,000.
- 2:54SPEAKER_00: That's right.
- 2:55SPEAKER_00: I want to raise twenty thousand dollars for Movember.
- 3:00SPEAKER_00: And well, I'm going to need your help.
- 3:05SPEAKER_00: So why Movember and why does this matter?
- 3:09SPEAKER_00: Many of you know that I work for Movember.
- 3:12SPEAKER_00: I introduce myself that way at the start of every episode.
- 3:15SPEAKER_00: I'm incredibly proud to be the head of talent and people experience for an organization that is genuinely changing lives.
- 3:26SPEAKER_00: But this campaign isn't something I'm doing because it's my job.
- 3:30SPEAKER_00: I'm doing it because I believe in the mission.
- 3:35SPEAKER_00: Because men are dying too young.
- 3:38SPEAKER_00: And that is simply not good enough.
- 3:42SPEAKER_00: Think about that for a moment.
- 3:45SPEAKER_00: Around the world, a man dies by suicide every minute.
- 3:51SPEAKER_00: Every single minute.
- 3:56SPEAKER_00: By the time you've listened to this episode, more men will have lost their lives to suicide.
- 4:03SPEAKER_00: And behind every one of those lives is a family, a friendship group, a workplace, a community.
- 4:13SPEAKER_00: People left wondering what they could have done differently.
- 4:18SPEAKER_00: Then there's prostate cancer, one of the most significant health challenges facing men around the world.
- 4:27SPEAKER_00: And testicular cancer, which disproportionately affects younger men.
- 4:33SPEAKER_00: These aren't abstract statistics.
- 4:37SPEAKER_00: They're our fathers, our brothers, our partners, our sons, our friends, our colleagues, and sometimes they're us.
- 4:53SPEAKER_00: I think one of the biggest challenges we face is that men are still remarkably good at not talking about what is happening in their lives.
- 5:04SPEAKER_00: We're good at saying we're fine.
- 5:07SPEAKER_00: We're good at pushing through.
- 5:10SPEAKER_00: We're good at putting off the doctor's appointment.
- 5:14SPEAKER_00: And we're sometimes spectacularly bad at asking for help.
- 5:20SPEAKER_00: Now, of course, these are generalizations.
- 5:24SPEAKER_00: But there are real social and cultural expectations around masculinity that influence how men approach their health.
- 5:34SPEAKER_00: And those expectations can have devastating consequences.
- 5:39SPEAKER_00: So that's why Movember exists.
- 5:42SPEAKER_00: Not simply to grow moustaches, not simply to raise money, but to fundamentally change the face of men's health.
- 5:53SPEAKER_00: So where does the money actually go?
- 5:56SPEAKER_00: This is the part I really want you to understand.
- 6:00SPEAKER_00: Because when you donate to my campaign, when I ask you to donate to my campaign, I really want you to know what you're supporting.
- 6:09SPEAKER_00: It is so important.
- 6:12SPEAKER_00: Movember has raised more than 1.8 billion Australian dollars since the movement began.
- 6:20SPEAKER_00: And that funding has supported more than 1,300 men's health projects around the world.
- 6:28SPEAKER_00: Let that sink in.
- 6:30SPEAKER_00: More than 1,300 projects.
- 6:34SPEAKER_00: Research, treatment, prevention, education, community support, and advocacy.
- 6:47SPEAKER_00: And according to our published funding information, right, it's out there.
- 6:52SPEAKER_00: Almost seventy-nine cents of every dollar raised globally goes towards supporting our key cause areas.
- 7:03SPEAKER_00: So what does that actually look like?
- 7:05SPEAKER_00: Well, let's start with mental health.
- 7:09SPEAKER_00: Movember funds initiatives that help men build stronger social connections, recognize when they're struggling, and then access appropriate support.
- 7:22SPEAKER_00: And importantly, it's not just about waiting until someone reaches crisis point.
- 7:29SPEAKER_00: It's about prevention.
- 7:32SPEAKER_00: It's about understanding what contributes to poor mental health in the first place.
- 7:39SPEAKER_00: It's about equipping communities, professionals, and individuals with the tools to have better conversations.
- 7:49SPEAKER_00: Movember is even helping develop mental health guidelines for community sport and competitive online gaming.
- 7:58SPEAKER_00: Think about that.
- 8:00SPEAKER_00: Meeting men where they actually are, in their sporting clubs, in their online communities, in the environments where they already spend time, rather than simply expecting them to find their own way into traditional support services.
- 8:20SPEAKER_00: It's a pretty powerful approach.
- 8:24SPEAKER_00: And then there's prostate cancer.
- 8:26SPEAKER_00: Movember supports research into better treatments, improved outcomes, and the quality of life for men living with the disease.
- 8:37SPEAKER_00: One example is True North, which is a program helping men navigate life following a prostate cancer diagnosis.
- 8:47SPEAKER_00: Because surviving cancer is one thing, living well afterwards is another.
- 8:54SPEAKER_00: Treatment can have enormous physical, emotional, and relationship impacts.
- 9:02SPEAKER_00: And those impacts don't simply disappear when someone finishes treatment.
- 9:07SPEAKER_00: Movember's work recognizes that.
- 9:11SPEAKER_00: And then there's testicular cancer.
- 9:15SPEAKER_00: Movember supports research and resources that help men understand the disease, navigate treatment, and manage life beyond diagnosis.
- 9:27SPEAKER_00: Because when a young man is diagnosed with cancer, the consequences can extend well beyond the immediate medical treatment.
- 9:38SPEAKER_00: And then there's the research and advocacy work.
- 9:42SPEAKER_00: Understanding men's health inequalities, challenging systems that aren't delivering the outcomes men need.
- 9:53SPEAKER_00: Building evidence that influences health care and public policy.
- 9:59SPEAKER_00: This is serious long-term work.
- 10:03SPEAKER_00: And it takes serious long-term investment.
- 10:08SPEAKER_00: So when somebody asks me where the money goes, that's what I want them to understand.
- 10:15SPEAKER_00: It goes towards creating a world where men live healthier, longer lives.
- 10:21SPEAKER_00: And that is something worth getting behind.
- 10:26SPEAKER_00: So what am I actually doing, right?
- 10:29SPEAKER_00: Let's talk about this slightly ridiculous challenge I've set myself.
- 10:34SPEAKER_00: Because apparently producing one podcast episode a week wasn't enough.
- 10:40SPEAKER_00: I decided that 30 consecutive days would be a fantastic idea.
- 10:47SPEAKER_00: I'm sure somewhere around November the 17th, I might be questioning that decision, maybe earlier.
- 10:54SPEAKER_00: But here's the concept.
- 10:57SPEAKER_00: For 30 days, starting November the 1st, I'm releasing a brand new episode of Eden Hadectodal Talent every single day.
- 11:08SPEAKER_00: And I've spent months preparing for it.
- 11:12SPEAKER_00: Meeting with innovators, exploring emerging technology, looking at products and services that are changing the way we work.
- 11:23SPEAKER_00: Having conversations with people who are building some genuinely fascinating things across the talent and people experience ecosystem.
- 11:33SPEAKER_00: And then taking all that research and turning it into episodes.
- 11:39SPEAKER_00: Some will be deep dives into technology.
- 11:43SPEAKER_00: Some will challenge the way we think about our profession.
- 11:47SPEAKER_00: Some will explore innovation, capability, and the future of work.
- 11:53SPEAKER_00: And throughout the month, we'll keep coming back to the reason we're doing all of this: men's health.
- 12:02SPEAKER_00: Now, if you're a regular listener, thank you.
- 12:06SPEAKER_00: But you'll know that there are two things I take pretty seriously with this podcast: no guests and no sponsors.
- 12:14SPEAKER_00: That doesn't change.
- 12:17SPEAKER_00: Even though I've spent time with some brilliant technology providers preparing the content, they're not coming on to the podcast as guests.
- 12:25SPEAKER_00: And nobody is paying me to promote their products.
- 12:29SPEAKER_00: This is still my independent perspective.
- 12:32SPEAKER_00: My observations, my opinions, my take on what matters to our profession.
- 12:39SPEAKER_00: But for 30 days, that content is going to serve a much bigger purpose.
- 12:45SPEAKER_00: We're going to use this platform to raise awareness and money for Movember.
- 12:52SPEAKER_00: And hopefully have a bit of fun along the way, right?
- 12:56SPEAKER_00: It's fun.
- 12:57SPEAKER_00: Well, we'll see what I say halfway through.
- 13:00SPEAKER_00: I may have no voice.
- 13:03SPEAKER_00: So the$20,000 challenge.
- 13:07SPEAKER_00: Here's where you come in.
- 13:10SPEAKER_00: $20,000.
- 13:12SPEAKER_00: That's my fundraising target.
- 13:14SPEAKER_00: And yes, it's ambitious.
- 13:17SPEAKER_00: But I genuinely believe we can get there.
- 13:22SPEAKER_00: And I don't want anyone listening to think they need to make some enormous financial contribution to be part of this.
- 13:29SPEAKER_00: Because honestly, you don't.
- 13:33SPEAKER_00: If you can donate$5, brilliant.
- 13:37SPEAKER_00: $10, amazing.
- 13:39SPEAKER_00: $50 incredible.
- 13:42SPEAKER_00: And if you're listening from an organization that wants to get behind the campaign, I'd absolutely love to hear from you too.
- 13:50SPEAKER_00: But the other thing, and the most important thing, you don't have to donate to help this campaign succeed.
- 13:59SPEAKER_00: You can follow the podcast.
- 14:02SPEAKER_00: You can share an episode.
- 14:05SPEAKER_00: You can send it to a colleague.
- 14:07SPEAKER_00: You can post it in a professional community.
- 14:11SPEAKER_00: You can tell somebody about the campaign.
- 14:15SPEAKER_00: And that might feel like a small thing.
- 14:18SPEAKER_00: But think about how audiences grow.
- 14:21SPEAKER_00: One person tells another.
- 14:24SPEAKER_00: That person shares an episode.
- 14:27SPEAKER_00: Somebody else discovers the podcast.
- 14:29SPEAKER_00: And suddenly a conversation that started with a handful of people reaches hundreds.
- 14:36SPEAKER_00: Then thousands.
- 14:38SPEAKER_00: And somewhere in that audience might be someone who needs to hear a message about men's health.
- 14:45SPEAKER_00: Someone who needs encouragement to book a doctor's appointment.
- 14:50SPEAKER_00: Someone who needs to check in with a mate.
- 14:54SPEAKER_00: Someone who needs to know they're not alone.
- 14:58SPEAKER_00: Or someone who is in a position to make a donation that helps fund the next important piece of research.
- 15:06SPEAKER_00: That's the power of community.
- 15:09SPEAKER_00: And it's the reason I believe this campaign can work.
- 15:15SPEAKER_00: So I'm asking you for three things.
- 15:18SPEAKER_00: And I'm asking you that with emotion.
- 15:21SPEAKER_00: Please follow.
- 15:22SPEAKER_00: Please share.
- 15:23SPEAKER_00: Please donate.
- 15:26SPEAKER_00: Follow the podcast on Spotify or Apple Podcasts.
- 15:31SPEAKER_00: Share it with your networks.
- 15:34SPEAKER_00: And if you're in a position to donate, please do.
- 15:38SPEAKER_00: The donation link is in the episode description.
- 15:42SPEAKER_00: And you don't need to wait until November.
- 15:44SPEAKER_00: You can donate right now.
- 15:47SPEAKER_00: Let's get some momentum behind this thing before we've even released the first episode.
- 15:55SPEAKER_00: So why I'm so passionate about this?
- 16:00SPEAKER_00: Yes, it's touched me personally.
- 16:02SPEAKER_00: Yes, I've lost family.
- 16:06SPEAKER_00: But working at Movember has also given me a much deeper appreciation of what it takes to make meaningful change.
- 16:14SPEAKER_00: And I'm incredibly fortunate to work alongside people who are genuinely committed to making the world a better place.
- 16:23SPEAKER_00: But Movember isn't just about the people who work there.
- 16:27SPEAKER_00: It's about the community.
- 16:29SPEAKER_00: The people who grow moustaches, the people who run, the people who walk, the people who host events, the people who have difficult conversations, the people who donate, and the people who show up for each other.
- 16:46SPEAKER_00: That's what makes this movement special.
- 16:50SPEAKER_00: And it's actually something I think connects beautifully with the themes we've explored on this podcast over the last three series.
- 16:59SPEAKER_00: Because we spend so much time talking about the future of work, the future of technology, the future of organizations, the future of talent.
- 17:11SPEAKER_00: But none of that means very much if we're not looking after the humans at the center of it.
- 17:17SPEAKER_00: We can build the most sophisticated technology in the world.
- 17:21SPEAKER_00: We can redesign organizations, we can revolutionize the way people work.
- 17:28SPEAKER_00: But if people aren't healthy, supported, and connected, what exactly are we building all this for?
- 17:37SPEAKER_00: And I think that's worth remembering, especially in our profession.
- 17:43SPEAKER_00: Because we have an opportunity to influence workplaces, to build cultures where people feel safe asking for help, where mental health isn't treated as an inconvenient conversation, where connection actually means something.
- 18:01SPEAKER_00: And where looking after people is more than a line in an employee value proposition.
- 18:09SPEAKER_00: So, yes, this is a fundraising campaign, but it's also an opportunity to remind ourselves while people matter.
- 18:18SPEAKER_00: And I can't think of a better way to launch series four.
- 18:23SPEAKER_00: So there we have it.
- 18:26SPEAKER_00: Series three of Eden Haddock Total Talent is officially coming to a close.
- 18:31SPEAKER_00: But we're not disappearing for long.
- 18:33SPEAKER_00: Because on November the 1st, we're turning everything up together.
- 18:39SPEAKER_00: 30 days, 30 episodes, one mission.
- 18:43SPEAKER_00: And$20,000 to raise for men's health.
- 18:48SPEAKER_00: I want to make some serious noise throughout November.
- 18:52SPEAKER_00: I want to grow this audience.
- 18:55SPEAKER_00: I want to introduce you to some brilliant innovation.
- 18:59SPEAKER_00: I want to challenge your thinking.
- 19:02SPEAKER_00: And most importantly, I want us to make a genuine contribution to changing the face of men's health.
- 19:10SPEAKER_00: So here's my challenge to you.
- 19:12SPEAKER_00: Don't just listen to this campaign.
- 19:14SPEAKER_00: Be part of it.
- 19:16SPEAKER_00: I've said we throughout this episode.
- 19:18SPEAKER_00: This is all of us.
- 19:20SPEAKER_00: Follow the show now.
- 19:22SPEAKER_00: Send this episode to five people.
- 19:25SPEAKER_00: Share the campaign with your professional networks.
- 19:28SPEAKER_00: And if you can spare a few dollars, head over to my Movember fundraising page and make a donation.
- 19:37SPEAKER_00: Every contribution matters.
- 19:40SPEAKER_00: Every share matters.
- 19:43SPEAKER_00: Every contribution, it matters.
- 19:47SPEAKER_00: And together, I reckon we can do something pretty special.
- 19:53SPEAKER_00: I'm doing this for my Uncle Gordon.
- 20:00SPEAKER_00: And it's a tribute to him for me.
- 20:06SPEAKER_00: To everybody who has listened, followed, shared, or supported Eden Haddock Total Talent throughout series three, thank you.
- 20:18SPEAKER_00: I genuinely appreciate it.
- 20:21SPEAKER_00: This little independent podcast has become something I'm incredibly proud of.
- 20:27SPEAKER_00: And I'm excited about where we're taking it next.
- 20:32SPEAKER_00: So, pulling myself together, that's a wrap on series three.
- 20:36SPEAKER_00: I'll see you on November the 1st.
- 20:39SPEAKER_00: And then every single day for the following 30 days.
- 20:45SPEAKER_00: Until then, look after yourselves, look after your mates, look after those you love.
- 20:53SPEAKER_00: Have the conversations that matter.
- 20:55SPEAKER_00: And let's raise$20,000 for November.
- 21:01SPEAKER_00: 30 days, 30 episodes, one mission.
- 21:05SPEAKER_00: Let's bloody do this.
- 21:07SPEAKER_00: I'm Eden Haddock.
- 21:08SPEAKER_00: This has been Eden Haddock Total Talent.
- 21:13SPEAKER_00: See you in November, and thank you.
