- 0:11Hello friends, it's Sean here. It's Thursday, it's Maundy
- 0:16Thursday, it's the 17th of April and here we are remembering that
- 0:21day where as we have been for the last week, up in that upper
- 0:25room with Jesus and his disciples.
- 0:28This is the day where we remember that happening.
- 0:30And as though by some kind of miraculous event of incredible
- 0:35forward planning. Thank you to Pete and the team.
- 0:38Today's Bible reading does take us upstairs and then it takes us
- 0:42out into the night to see the events of that Maundy Thursday
- 0:47evening play out. And friends, even though this is
- 0:51hard to read and hard to hear, as we hear Jesus going through
- 0:55this terrible ordeal, this, this is the pivotal story of the
- 1:01universe. You can't overstate it.
- 1:04This is the story where the eternal God of the universe
- 1:09executes his plan to save us. Wow.
- 1:15Let's read this remarkable story together as we read together
- 1:19John chapter 18. After saying these things, Jesus
- 1:33crossed the Kidron Valley with his disciples and entered a
- 1:36Grove of olive trees. Judas the betrayer knew the
- 1:40place because Jesus had often gone there with his disciples.
- 1:44The leading priests and Pharisees had given Judas a
- 1:47contingent of Roman soldiers and temple guards to accompany him.
- 1:51Now with blazing torches, lanterns and weapons, they
- 1:55arrived at the olive Grove. Jesus fully realised all that
- 2:00was going to happen to him, so he stepped forward to meet them.
- 2:04Who are you looking for? He asked Jesus the Nazarene.
- 2:09They replied, I am He, Jesus, said Judas, who betrayed him for
- 2:16standing with them. As Jesus said I am he, they all
- 2:21drew back and fell to the ground once more.
- 2:25He asked them, Who are you looking for?
- 2:28And again they replied, Jesus the Nazarene.
- 2:32I told you that I am he, Jesus said, and since I am the one you
- 2:37want, let these others go. He did this to fulfil his own
- 2:42statement. I did not lose a single one of
- 2:45those you had given me. Then Simon Peter drew a sword
- 2:50and slashed off the right ear of Malchus, the high priest slave.
- 2:54But Jesus said to Peter, put your sword back into its sheath.
- 2:59Shall I not drink from the cup of suffering the Father has
- 3:02given me? So the soldiers, the commanding
- 3:06officer and the temple guards arrested Jesus and tied him up.
- 3:11First they took him to Annas, since he was the father in law
- 3:15of Caiaphas the high priest. At the time.
- 3:19Caiaphas was the one who had told the other Jewish leaders
- 3:22it's better that one man should die for the people.
- 3:27Simon Peter followed Jesus, as did another of the disciples.
- 3:32That other disciple was acquainted with the high priest,
- 3:35so he was allowed to enter the high priest's courtyard with
- 3:38Jesus. Peter had to stay outside the
- 3:41gate. Then the disciple who knew the
- 3:44high priest spoke to the woman watching at the gate, and she
- 3:47let Peter in. The woman asked Peter, You're
- 3:51not one of that man's disciples, are you?
- 3:54No, he said, I am not. Because it was cold.
- 3:59The household servants and the guards had made a charcoal fire.
- 4:03They stood around it, warming themselves, and Peter stood with
- 4:06them, warming himself inside. The high priest began asking
- 4:11Jesus about his followers and what he had been teaching them.
- 4:15Jesus replied. Everyone knows what I teach.
- 4:19I have preached regularly in the synagogues and the temple where
- 4:23the people gather. I have not spoken in secret.
- 4:26Why are you asking me this question?
- 4:29Ask those who heard me. They know what I said.
- 4:33Then one of the temple guards standing nearby slapped Jesus
- 4:36across the face. Is that the way to answer
- 4:38though, I priest? He demanded.
- 4:41Jesus replied, If I have said anything wrong, you must prove
- 4:46it. But if I'm speaking the truth,
- 4:48why are you beating me? Then Anas bound Jesus and sent
- 4:54him to Caiaphas the high priest. Meanwhile, as Simon Peter was
- 4:58standing by the fire, warming himself, they asked him again.
- 5:02You're not one of his disciples, are you?
- 5:05He denied it, saying No, I am not.
- 5:09But one of the household slaves of the high priest.
- 5:12A relative of the man whose ear Peter had cut off asked, Didn't
- 5:16I see you out there in the olive Grove with Jesus?
- 5:20Again? Peter denied it, and immediately
- 5:25a rooster crowed. Jesus.
- 5:30Trial before Caiaphas ended in the early hours of the morning.
- 5:34Then he was taken to the headquarters of the Roman
- 5:36governor. His accusers didn't go inside
- 5:40because it would defile them and they wouldn't be allowed to
- 5:43celebrate the Passover. So Pilate, the governor went out
- 5:47to them and asked, What is your charge against this man?
- 5:54We wouldn't be handing him over to you if he weren't a criminal,
- 5:57they retorted. Then take him away and judge him
- 6:01by your own law, Pilate told them.
- 6:05Only the Romans are permitted to execute someone.
- 6:08The Jewish leaders replied. This fulfilled Jesus prediction
- 6:12about the way he would die. Then Pilate went back into his
- 6:17headquarters and called for Jesus to be brought to him.
- 6:20Are you the King of the Jews? He asked him.
- 6:25Jesus replied. Is this your own question or did
- 6:29others tell you this about me? Am IA Jew, Pilate retorted.
- 6:35Your own people and their leading priests brought you to
- 6:38me for trial. Why?
- 6:41What have you done? Jesus answered.
- 6:45My Kingdom is not an earthly Kingdom.
- 6:48If it were, my followers would fight to keep me from being
- 6:52handed over to the Jewish leaders.
- 6:54But my Kingdom is not of this world, Pilate said.
- 6:59So you are a king, Jesus responded.
- 7:04You say I am king. Actually, I was born and came
- 7:09into the world to testify to the truth.
- 7:12All who love the truth recognise that what I say is true.
- 7:18What is truth? Pilot asked.
- 7:22Then he went out again to the people and told them he is not
- 7:26guilty of any crime. But you have a custom of asking
- 7:30me to release 1 prisoner each year at Passover.
- 7:35Would you like me to release this king of the Jews?
- 7:39But they shouted back, no, not this man, we want Barabbas.
- 7:45Barabbas was a revolutionary Jesus.
- 7:58It's almost without words that we read this with nothing to say
- 8:03but just awe for all that you went through out of love for us.
- 8:08And I can't help but feeling shame that I, like Peter so many
- 8:12times in my words and behaviours, deny you by the way
- 8:17I live. And that is the nature of our
- 8:20humanity, that this is what we do.
- 8:25Oh Jesus, forgive us, draw us back into you and replace our
- 8:33weak flesh with your strong spirit, our broken and selfish
- 8:38human nature with the fruits of your spirit, that we can always
- 8:43be pointing back to you. Jesus, we are humbled by your
- 8:49obvious acts of love for us in this Easter story.
- 8:57So change our hearts today as we reflect on all that you did for
- 9:00us so that we can just once again, with fresh awareness,
- 9:06know the enormous magnitude of your love for us.
- 9:11So we come before you in awe and wonder at all that you do, and
- 9:17pray all of this in your name. Amen.
