- 0:03This is Living Waters of Grace, the teaching ministry of Clark
- 0:08Wofford, senior pastor of Calvary Chapel of Westmoreland,
- 0:12County of Greensburg, PA. Now here's Pastor Clark as he
- 0:16continues teaching through God's Word.
- 0:37They were convicted about the things they were reading, the
- 0:39things they were studying, and they brought their books
- 0:42together and they burned them as sight of all.
- 0:44So all the people in Ephesus, there's a big deal going on
- 0:48here. People are magnifying the Lord.
- 0:50People are confessing their sins.
- 0:52They're bringing all their garbage and they're pouring and
- 0:55whatever it might be and they're going to burn it.
- 0:58And it says they counted up the value of them and a total of
- 1:0250,000 pieces of silver in today's money.
- 1:05That could be between 1:00 and $5 million.
- 1:08Imagine a community coming out in the open about all their
- 1:11deepest secrets and hidden pleasures.
- 1:14What if people were exposing all the porn they'd been looking at,
- 1:18or all the books of a sexual nature that some had been
- 1:21indulging in behind closed doors?
- 1:24Well, this is what was happening in the city of Ephesus as Pastor
- 1:28Clark is going to fill you in today.
- 1:30There was true conviction happening in the hearts of these
- 1:34people. Guess what, By taking an action
- 1:37and moving away from sin, God was glorified.
- 1:40Now here's Pastor Clark in the book of Acts Chapter 19 with
- 1:44today's edition of Living Waters of Grace.
- 1:48Paul's in this city that is predominantly Pagan.
- 1:51There's very few Christians. There's not even a church at
- 1:53this time. So visualize yourself.
- 1:56Your friend of Paul, he wants to have some Bible studies.
- 2:00He rented a facility from a guy that had some real estate that
- 2:05wasn't using it at certain hours of the day, between 11:00 and
- 2:094:00 in the afternoon. And he invited people like us at
- 2:12the time that were in the community to come and study the
- 2:15Bible, study the word. Of course, it would have been
- 2:18primarily the Old Testament Scriptures, but he was writing
- 2:20letters. So he was using things that the
- 2:22Holy Spirit had been giving him that were eventually codified in
- 2:26what we call the day our Bible, 66 Books of the Bible.
- 2:30So as he's teaching these people that the things of the Spirit,
- 2:35people like you and me, we're sitting there and we're getting
- 2:38changed. We're hearing the word.
- 2:40So all these things are happening and they're learning.
- 2:42And so they're going out from this Bible study every day.
- 2:46Can you imagine being in a Bible?
- 2:48It's one thing to be in a Bible study with me.
- 2:50I ain't anywhere near Paul. OK, I'm lip syncing what Paul
- 2:53wrote. This is all what he, you know,
- 2:55Luke translated this and put it into this book, the book of the
- 2:58Acts. But these these are the this is
- 3:00the life of Paul, his ministry. But to be able to sit with an
- 3:03apostle for six hours a day, five days a week for over almost
- 3:08three years, he would be really grounded.
- 3:10You'd really know what the Bible was all about, but not any of
- 3:14that. They were going out and in the
- 3:17power of the Holy Spirit. They were impacting the
- 3:19community and the provinces around the area that Paul was
- 3:25ministering in at the time and Acts.
- 3:27So the purpose of the church and in our church to hear is to
- 3:31explode on the outside so that people that don't know Jesus
- 3:35begin to hear about him and want to know about him and they end
- 3:39up maybe coming here to hear more about him.
- 3:41OK, or or another Bible church, whatever.
- 3:44And so this is impacting the whole known world at the time
- 3:48the gospel was going out and the power of the Holy Spirit.
- 3:52And so Paul, not any was preaching because the gospel in
- 3:57and of itself is the power of God and the salvation to
- 4:00everyone that believes, to the Jew 1st and also to the Greek.
- 4:03So I don't need to have a miracle in front of me before
- 4:06I'm a Christian to believe that Jesus is the Christ, the Son of
- 4:10the living God. The Holy Spirit does the miracle
- 4:14in my heart to cause me to believe the message of the
- 4:17gospel. And then when I believe that
- 4:20message, then my life is dramatically transformed.
- 4:24I'm saved, I become born again. I have new eyesight, I have new
- 4:28vision, new passion, new desires and my my life is is brand new
- 4:33and yours is too. When you come to faith in Christ
- 4:36and that is the miracle of miracles.
- 4:38You know of someone becoming born again, passing from death
- 4:42to light, from darkness to light.
- 4:44And now our followers of God as as opposed to followers of the
- 4:49devil in his lies. And so not any though the
- 4:52preaching at the time, but Jews require a sign, it said.
- 4:57So signs are real important to the Jewish people.
- 5:00The Greeks seeked after wisdom. Jews seek a sign.
- 5:02So in order to authenticate the message that Paul is proclaiming
- 5:06that Jesus is the Messiah to a predominantly Jewish population
- 5:11at the time these miracles occurred.
- 5:13And so these handkerchiefs and these weren't like things he was
- 5:17blowing his nose on. These were sweat bands he put
- 5:20around his head when he was doing his tent making.
- 5:22The apron were the made out of leather.
- 5:24And he used this to put his tools in whenever he was making
- 5:28his living as he was preaching the gospel and and making tents.
- 5:32And So what happened was I don't know who came up with the idea.
- 5:35I know it wouldn't have been Paul.
- 5:37He wouldn't have said we'll take this and put it on someone sick
- 5:40and, and they'll be okay and they'll be healed.
- 5:43No, that wasn't the way it worked.
- 5:44Somehow the Spirit of God, this ended up getting some of this
- 5:47stuff out into these different places.
- 5:50And when it touched the bodies of some of these people, it says
- 5:54that they were delivered from their sickness.
- 5:56Diseases left them and, and, and not any of that evil spirits
- 6:00went out from them automatically just by the touching of this
- 6:05point of contact of a man who is highly anointed of God.
- 6:09It wasn't anything in and of Paul.
- 6:11It was Christ in Paul that enabled this to actually occur.
- 6:15Now, you don't really read about this in any other part of the
- 6:18Bible. You have to realize that the
- 6:20miracles in the Bible started with Moses primarily, and then
- 6:24they were Elijah and Elijah and then they were Jesus and the
- 6:28apostles. Those were the three stages of
- 6:30the ages of miracles in in church history and in the Bible.
- 6:35There's less than 100 miracles codified or quantified in detail
- 6:40where we can read and study them tells us and John Jesus did many
- 6:44other miracles that there wouldn't have been enough books
- 6:47in the world to contain everything he did.
- 6:49But God felt that it was necessary to give us enough
- 6:52indication that he does work within the miraculous realm.
- 6:57Now today I could RIP part of my sweater off here If you had a
- 7:01headache and and tell you to put it on your forehead, nothing's
- 7:04going to happen. These charlatans on TV that sell
- 7:09these things and tell you to send money in and they prayed
- 7:12for them and and they soak their sweat in them.
- 7:15If you send 50 bucks and they'll send you this cloth.
- 7:17I mean, it's just nothing but con artists and RIP off.
- 7:20This happened one time and you know, and other times, if you
- 7:24read church history documents from way back in the early days,
- 7:28there has been miracles that occurred that there was no
- 7:30explanation for. People have laid hands on me and
- 7:34prayed for me. And when I've been sick or
- 7:36having a problem and I've done the same thing for other people,
- 7:39and sometimes God shows up and brings healing and other times,
- 7:44OK, you take the medicine, right?
- 7:46That's just the way it is. I prefer to get the healing and
- 7:49not take the medicine. But you know, if I got to take
- 7:51the medicine, I take the medicine.
- 7:53And you do too. But there's nothing wrong with
- 7:56seeking God for a touch supernaturally.
- 7:59There was a true story and I saw the movie and I read the history
- 8:04and it was authenticated that this guy, Nectarius was his name
- 8:09and he was a very godly, monastic kind of guy, praying
- 8:15all the time, a very holy man, very saintly man.
- 8:18And Mickey Rourke, the guy played in that movie, that
- 8:21boxing movie, he played the part of this drunk coal miner that
- 8:27was living at the time that Nectarius was living on this
- 8:30particular island. And he somehow, I think he had a
- 8:33drinking problem and he fell off a Cliff and paralyzed himself.
- 8:37So he's in bed and he can't move.
- 8:40And Victarius is in bed with prostate cancer.
- 8:43And this is what always fascinated me.
- 8:46Here's Paul. Able to do miracles, right?
- 8:49People getting healed, delivered.
- 8:51Paul had a physical affliction, the thorn in the flesh.
- 8:54He asked God three times to take it from him.
- 8:58He didn't like RIP off his shirt and put it on his wherever it
- 9:01was hurting and to say, OK, make it happen.
- 9:04He had to suffer it. And then the Lord said, hey, I'm
- 9:07not going to answer the prayer. My strength is made perfect in
- 9:10your weakness at the power of Christ would rest upon you.
- 9:12So Paul had to deal with the illness and the affliction that
- 9:16he had. Everybody's going to die of
- 9:18something. Even after Lazarus was raised
- 9:21from a dead miraculously, guess what?
- 9:23He eventually died physically. We all have to die physically.
- 9:26But so anyway, this, this nectarious guy, he's laying in
- 9:30bed and and Mickey Rourke, the actor, he's laying there.
- 9:33Why would God allow me to have this problem?
- 9:37I can't move. What good am I going to be to my
- 9:39wife and my kids? I can't make a living.
- 9:41He's depressed, he's complaining and nectarious just sort of
- 9:44laying there in agony and pain. He just smiles as well.
- 9:47Maybe God will surprise you. That's all he said.
- 9:50Well, this is wild. So Nectarious dies, they come
- 9:54in, the nurses are taking the shirt and everything off.
- 9:56They throw the shirt on the bed to the guy, Mickey Rourke, the
- 10:00actor laying there in the bed. And within several minutes he's
- 10:03completely healed and he's able to walk.
- 10:06His body's restored. Now.
- 10:08You can't re enact the stuff you you can't figure it out.
- 10:11I mean, even when Jesus did healing, they were always
- 10:13different. Sometimes he'd spit on the, the
- 10:16dirt and get the mud and rub it in someone's eyes or some other
- 10:20time a woman would touch the hem of his garment.
- 10:22I, I all I know is that God is able to do the miraculous and we
- 10:27can pray and ask him to do that. And sometimes we experience
- 10:31that, but there's no guarantee. There's no man.
- 10:34You can go to some woman that it's a holy person to ask him to
- 10:38pray. And just because it's them,
- 10:39they're going to be able to do something for you.
- 10:42It's only the Lord, and He does everything after the counsel of
- 10:45his own will, even the gifts of the Spirit.
- 10:48He gives them out severally as He wills.
- 10:51The idea of faith healers is not biblical, but the the idea of
- 10:56the gift of healing is biblical. But even the people that have
- 11:00been used by God to pray for people and their health, and
- 11:04there's been evidence of maybe a higher percentage of people
- 11:06being healed doesn't mean that everybody's going to get healed.
- 11:10But anyway, this this instance of this occurring in here was to
- 11:14get the attention of these Jewish people.
- 11:17And it did in verse 13, and some of the itinerant Jewish exorcist
- 11:22took it upon themselves to call in the name of the Lord Jesus
- 11:25over those who had evil spirits, saying we exercise you by the
- 11:30Jesus whom Paul preaches. Also there were seven sons of
- 11:33Skiva, a Jewish chief priest who did so.
- 11:36So these Jewish people at the time, unbelievers, had some kind
- 11:42of capacity because they did believe in the God of Abraham,
- 11:45Isaac and Jacob. So there was some anointing
- 11:48authority in their lives and I guess they had experiences at
- 11:51times where they were used and God worked through them to
- 11:55deliver people from demonic possession or oppression.
- 11:58But their minds are thinking and they're not even believers yet.
- 12:02Well, like Paul prays in Jesus name and there's, there's
- 12:07miracles that occur. So let's try this.
- 12:10Let's see if it works for us. Well, well, first of all, it's,
- 12:14it's humorous here. What's going to happen because
- 12:17these, these sons of the, the Jewish chief priests thought
- 12:21that maybe they could make some new kind of ministry going on
- 12:25here. And, and it says in verse 15,
- 12:27the evil spirit answered and said, Jesus, I know and Paul, I
- 12:32know, but who are you? Boy, that's scary, huh?
- 12:37They're in the house with this demonic person, the spirit.
- 12:40They think they're going to have an overcoming experience here
- 12:45and these demon demons going to be cast out.
- 12:48And this is what happens in verse 16.
- 12:51Then the man in whom the evil spirit was leaped on them,
- 12:55overpowered them and prevailed against them so that they fled
- 12:59out of that house naked and wounded.
- 13:01Wouldn't that be something? One guy, the strength of this
- 13:05person possessed by the devil was able to whoop 7 grown
- 13:09healthy young men and not any beat them up and tear their
- 13:13clothes off and and have them running out humiliated by what
- 13:17it was they tried to do. The devil's always trying to
- 13:20replicate or duplicate the miraculous.
- 13:25We remember Moses with the rod and throw it down it turns into
- 13:30a snake. Well, God allowed that to happen
- 13:32when the magicians were able to replicate certain degrees of
- 13:36those miracles, right? And so that's because there's a
- 13:38miracle that occurs, doesn't mean it's the Lord.
- 13:41The devil comes with lying signs and wonders, a matter of fact,
- 13:46in the last days when the Antichrist comes on the scene
- 13:50and the false prophet, they'll be all kind of miraculous.
- 13:53That will be occurring like we've never, ever experienced.
- 13:56And there'll be a lot of people thinking that he's the Christ
- 14:00and he'll be the Antichrist. And so this became known in
- 14:04verse 17 both to all the Jews and the Greeks dwelling in
- 14:08Ephesus, and fear fell on all of them.
- 14:11So we're in Greensburg here. It's in the newspaper.
- 14:16Channel 4 News is down there interviewing.
- 14:19We are all aware that something spectacular happened and scary.
- 14:23And so we know there's problems in Greensburg.
- 14:27There's demonic activity, there's demonic activity
- 14:30everywhere. There's satanic powers, there's
- 14:33a Oak Hall, there's astrology, there's false religion, there's
- 14:40all these kind of things that are happening in the day and age
- 14:42that we live. And these are the things that
- 14:44bind people into immoral lifestyles.
- 14:48Someone doesn't this one day wake up and say, well, I think
- 14:51I'm going to, I'm a guy, so I think I want to have some sex
- 14:54with a guy. I mean, that's that is demonic.
- 14:57It's not real. It's not, I don't care what any
- 15:00psychologist or what any kind of secular humanists or what
- 15:04they're trying to tell us in government now and all these
- 15:06things, these things are not normal.
- 15:10Matter of fact, Roman Empire fell because of the this
- 15:14promiscuity and this increased atmosphere of gay and lesbian
- 15:19lifestyle and abortion that eventually that nation was
- 15:23destroyed. And we are this close right now
- 15:25with testing God with what it is we're doing as a culture and
- 15:29people saying good is evil and evil is good.
- 15:33And we as Christians need This is why like we need to get out
- 15:36of the building, have conversations.
- 15:38We don't need to condemn people. We don't hate people.
- 15:40We need to love them enough to tell them, hey, what you're
- 15:43doing is sin and your sin will cause you to eventually be in
- 15:48hell. That's the bottom line.
- 15:51Now, I hope I'm not hurting anybody's feelings here today.
- 15:54But if you're living in a lifestyle that is not God's will
- 16:00and, and in his word, you're going to suffer consequences.
- 16:03You already are. The amount of people who are
- 16:05taking their lives that have tried this transgenderism and
- 16:08all this crazy stuff out there, sex changes and all this, it is
- 16:12unbelievable. You got to do the research, the
- 16:14statistics, and you know, and it isn't unloving.
- 16:17It's loving to tell people the truth.
- 16:19It's unloving to just say, well, it's OK, That's whatever you
- 16:22want to do, go ahead and do it. And so Paul wasn't that kind of
- 16:26guy. And nor are we these kind of
- 16:28people that this ignore these issues of sin today, even in our
- 16:32own time and our own culture. And So what happened was they're
- 16:37they're afraid now that the beginning of wisdom is the fear
- 16:40of the Lord and depart from evil.
- 16:41That tells us in Proverbs, you're really catching on when
- 16:45you begin to fear the consequences of your sin.
- 16:50You don't play around with it anymore.
- 16:51You don't justify, you don't say, well, that's OK, and
- 16:55everybody's doing it. No big deal.
- 16:57It's a big deal. It's a big, big deal.
- 17:01And So what happened was these people are are are starting to
- 17:04get frightened. And whenever you have an
- 17:07encounter with God to such a degree over your sin, and you
- 17:10know you have one or two choices to make, you either continue in
- 17:15your sin and you perish, or you get right with God and you
- 17:18repent and you leave your sin. And this began to cause such a a
- 17:24move of God's spirit. And the city of Ephesus, it says
- 17:28that fear fell on them all and the name of the Lord Jesus was
- 17:31magnified. That's what we need to have
- 17:33happen today. At the name of Jesus, every knee
- 17:36will bow and every tongue will confess that Jesus Christ is
- 17:39Lord to the glory of God the Father.
- 17:41There is no other name given among men under heaven by which
- 17:46we can be saved or must be saved.
- 17:49Jesus is the truth. He's the way, the truth the
- 17:51life. No man comes to the Father but
- 17:54through him. And so Jesus was magnified.
- 17:57He said if he be lifted up, he will draw all men to himself.
- 18:00Pray for Pastor Lewis and myself that when we preach the Word,
- 18:03we're preaching the Word with the name Jesus involved in the
- 18:07Word. Because the Bible without Jesus
- 18:09is just a bunch of words, but the Bible with Jesus can turn
- 18:15the world upside down. And this is what was happening
- 18:18here. Now we'll read.
- 18:19Many are intimidated now they're fearful.
- 18:22And many who had believed came confessing and telling their
- 18:26deeds. Can you imagine Calvary today?
- 18:29Some of you guys are getting saved.
- 18:30Hey, I'm not leaving today until I tell you what God's delivered
- 18:33me from before I came here today, I was sleeping around
- 18:37with every, every woman I could find or whatever.
- 18:41I was chasing some guy down the street or some woman says, well,
- 18:45I'm sleeping with all the different girls out there in the
- 18:48community, you know, and the Lord convicted me and I couldn't
- 18:56live that way anymore and I repented.
- 18:59And I want to tell you guys what Jesus did for me, right?
- 19:03If you ever have a testimony, let me know.
- 19:06Because the more we hear what the Lord's done, the more he's
- 19:09glorified and the more people here they say, well, maybe he
- 19:12could do that for me. People are trapped in sin.
- 19:15People don't just decide one day that they want to be immoral.
- 19:19They start becoming immoral and then they're trapped.
- 19:22They don't know how to stop being immoral.
- 19:25And they're they're in bondage and they're under the influence
- 19:27of the devil and says. And so these people, they're
- 19:30confessing and telling their deeds.
- 19:32Also, many of those who had practiced magic brought their
- 19:35books together and burned them in the sight of all.
- 19:39Now, I've been a student of all kind of religions my whole life,
- 19:43and I was into Buddhism for a while and I was into, you know,
- 19:46reading whatever was esoteric or ocaldic, and I didn't even know
- 19:50what I was doing at the time. It just fascinated me.
- 19:53What makes the world go round and why is this happened?
- 19:56Why is that? And how far is the sky going?
- 19:58And what's truth? You know, until I came to know
- 20:00Christ, I had no idea what truth was.
- 20:03So I have a bunch of books. And there are a lot of them are
- 20:06in my garage now in a box. This, I don't know.
- 20:09What am I going to do with them? Maybe we should have a bonfire
- 20:11this summer somewhere. I'll bring my old books and you
- 20:14bring yours too, you know. But anyway, this is what was
- 20:17happening here, right? They were convicted about the
- 20:20things they were reading, the things they were studying, and
- 20:23they brought their books together and they burned them.
- 20:25A sight of all. So all the people in Ephesus,
- 20:28there's a big deal going on here.
- 20:29People are magnifying the Lord. People are confessing their
- 20:33sins. They're bringing all their
- 20:35garbage and they're porn and whatever it might be, and
- 20:38they're going to burn it. And it says they counted up the
- 20:41value of them and a total of 50,000 pieces of silver in the
- 20:46days money. That could be between 1:00 and
- 20:48$5,000,000. I read back and that day that
- 20:51silver was worth about $10,000, which is a lot of money.
- 20:55It was enough for 150 people to make their livelihood for a
- 20:59whole year. That's how much was destroyed in
- 21:02this in this fire. And as a result of that, what
- 21:06happened? It says the word of the Lord
- 21:09grew mightily and prevailed. So we have a calm church here
- 21:14today. Usually I'm a calm pastor
- 21:19because a lot of you fall asleep when I teach.
- 21:21Hey, so you have a very nice voice.
- 21:23You know what a day my voice is a little bit more, you know,
- 21:28whatever you know, I don't know, but you know, you're not falling
- 21:30asleep today as much as you normally do.
- 21:35It's not that the message is any better, but the the text is
- 21:38better because we're reading about the Lord being magnified
- 21:42and and so as a result of the word, the message in the gospel
- 21:46is growing mightily. It's prevailing in the world.
- 21:48It's prevailing in the community.
- 21:50I find that as the Lord move in a small Pagan city, Ephesus at
- 21:55the time, with 95% and 98% of the people being unbelievers,
- 22:00all the sudden this one guy with some friends, the whole city is
- 22:04being turned upside down. So you and I might say, well,
- 22:07we're in a hopeless situation. We got a Pagan government, we
- 22:12got legislators or you know, sanctioning immorality.
- 22:17We, you know, they, they're doing this, they're doing, who
- 22:19cares what they do? We need to be doing what we're
- 22:21supposed to do. And if we do what we're supposed
- 22:24to do, we're not like bad mouthing people and putting them
- 22:28down or judging them. I mean, I'm no better than
- 22:31anybody else, but I know someone who's better than all of us.
- 22:33And his names Jesus. And he can save you from your
- 22:38sin. You got to repent.
- 22:41You got to turn. You got to turn to Jesus.
- 22:43And So what happens is when a city begins to do that and a
- 22:46community begins to do that, then all of a sudden we are salt
- 22:50and light. You know, we begin to impact and
- 22:52counter balance or counter attack all this movement toward
- 22:57this godless world. Like I think the problem with
- 23:01the church and Christians in general was we don't think we
- 23:03can do anything anymore. So we don't vote, or we don't
- 23:07witness, or we don't pray, or we don't intercede.
- 23:12There's all these options in the Bible of things that we can do
- 23:16as God's people that can begin to turn things the other way.
- 23:20And throughout the ages of time, God's work with the remnant of
- 23:24people who have been open to the Spirit of God that he could work
- 23:28in to turn things in a different direction again.
- 23:32And if we were ever at a point in our time and our history and
- 23:35our nation and our own lives and in our own churches as
- 23:38evangelicals, we need this movement of God.
- 23:41We need this freshness of God's Spirit.
- 23:43We need people to be raised up in the church with ministries
- 23:46and giftings and callings and abilities to let it all out and
- 23:51give it all for Jesus now. Amen.
- 23:53I mean, what are we waiting for? Thanks for joining us on this
- 23:58journey through Acts. On today's edition of Living
- 24:01Waters of Grace, Pastor Clark shares that one of the most
- 24:04remarkable things about the book of Acts is how it shows the
- 24:08disciples transformation. The followers of Jesus we meet
- 24:12here are very different from the often confused and fearful
- 24:17disciples in the Gospels. After Jesus's death and
- 24:21resurrection, and especially through the power of the Holy
- 24:24Spirit, the apostles experienced a profound change in their
- 24:29hearts and boldness. Their faith became unwavering,
- 24:33and they moved forward with courage to spread the gospel
- 24:36despite opposition and hardship. Acts reminds us that the same
- 24:41Spirit who empowered them is at work in US today, shaping our
- 24:46hearts and giving us strength to live boldly for Christ.
