- 0:00The mind has a tremendous power to influence the physical body
- 0:04for good or I'll in some cases. Mental ideas can lead to
- 0:09extraordinary imbalances in the body which can lead to weakness,
- 0:14illness, and even the death of the body.
- 0:18Many times we will push the body beyond its limits without
- 0:21concern for the effects this will have or even how we go
- 0:25about doing this. We also can put the body into
- 0:29extremely precarious situations with extremes of environment
- 0:33that can tax the body's resources.
- 0:37There is even a saying that whatever does not kill you makes
- 0:40you stronger. Unfortunately, while this is a
- 0:44mental conception that is widely accepted, it does not always
- 0:49bear itself out in practice. Sometimes pushing beyond and
- 0:53into the extremes does not immediately kill the body, but
- 0:57it may cause lasting harm and injury that has long term
- 1:02consequences. Recently, a friend recounted her
- 1:06experience that illustrated this concern precisely.
- 1:10She was an advanced practitioner and teacher of Hata Yoga.
- 1:13Under the guidance of a well known Hata Yoga master, he
- 1:17instructed the advanced students to undertake a particularly
- 1:21strenuous exercise of splits suspended on ropes without any
- 1:26warm up or preparation or guidance on how to do it.
- 1:30As she attempted this practice and followed the normal protocol
- 1:34of relaxing into the pose, she experienced a serious pull on
- 1:39her hamstring muscle. This so weak in the muscle that
- 1:43some years later, when she went to step over a short obstacle,
- 1:47the muscle detached from the bone and she spent over a year
- 1:51recuperating without being able to exercise or otherwise strain
- 1:56the affected tissue. We frequently impose upon the
- 2:01body with extreme diets and pressures, including extreme
- 2:04sports, challenging the body to exceed itself.
- 2:09If not done with proper preparation, attention, focus,
- 2:13and discipline, the results can be harmful over time.
- 2:18However, humanity has found that the mind can also provide
- 2:23tremendous benefits to the development of the body, aiding
- 2:27it in the healing process when it is imbalanced or
- 2:30systematically developing its capacities beyond its existing
- 2:34limitations with disciplines that have been worked out
- 2:37through time and experience. When the will is focused on the
- 2:42development of the body, therefore, it must be combined
- 2:46with an approach that takes into account the circumstances, the
- 2:50current status of the body, the intended development and the
- 2:54steps that it will take to accomplish that, as well as an
- 2:58appraisal of the time needed so as to allow the development
- 3:02without breaking down the process.
- 3:06The will may start as a mental focus or intention, or it may
- 3:10channel higher energy still, and this provides us an insight into
- 3:15the future evolution of the body as the forces that reside in
- 3:19domains above the mind begin to make themselves felt and
- 3:23undertake to remake the body to be able to hold those forces and
- 3:28pressures. Just as the mind has changed the
- 3:31body and its functioning to meet its own needs, the mother
- 3:37observes quote. The basis of all these methods
- 3:41of physical culture is the power exercised by the conscious will
- 3:46over matter. Usually it is a method which
- 3:49someone has used fairly successfully and set up as a
- 3:52principle of action, which he has taught to others, who in
- 3:56turn have continued and perfected it until it is taken a
- 4:00somewhat fixed form of one kind of discipline or another.
- 4:04But the whole basis is the action of the conscious will on
- 4:08the body. The exact form of the method is
- 4:11not of primary importance. In various countries at various
- 4:16times one method or another has been used, but always behind it
- 4:22there is a canalised mental power which acts methodically.
- 4:27Of course, some methods try to use a higher power, which would
- 4:31in its turn transmit its capacity to the mental power.
- 4:36If a power of a higher order is infused into the mental method,
- 4:40this method naturally becomes more effective and powerful.
- 4:44But essentially all these disciplines depend above all on
- 4:49the person who practices them and the way he uses them.
- 4:54One can, even in the most material ordinary processes,
- 4:58make use of this altogether external basis to infuse into
- 5:02them powers of a higher order, and all methods, whatever they
- 5:07may be, depend almost exclusively on the person who
- 5:11uses them, on what he puts into them.
