- 0:17Speaker 1: Welcome to the jag Zam today, brought to you by
- 0:19Speaker 1: public Ed had Nannie Stevens, Mark Doctor, and John Oser
- 0:21Speaker 1: are with me today. So we're gonna talk a little
- 0:23Speaker 1: bit about rookie mini camp that kicked off last week,
- 0:26Speaker 1: and of course the Offite's in program continues now with
- 0:28Speaker 1: everybody in house, as everybody can work together and start
- 0:31Speaker 1: getting ready for the season. Let's go over our big
- 0:33Speaker 1: thing today. Big Thing number one is gonna be as advertised.
- 0:36Speaker 1: Liam Cohen out there with his rookies, talked a little
- 0:39Speaker 1: bit about what he saw out of his second round
- 0:40Speaker 1: tight end.
- 0:43Speaker 2: You can tell he's got a common confidence about him,
- 0:47Speaker 2: extremely locked in in the meeting room setting. You know,
- 0:51Speaker 2: I knew some guys at Nebraska, and I've talked to
- 0:54Speaker 2: some guys at A and M, and you know in
- 0:56Speaker 2: the weight room, the way he attacks things, the way
- 0:59Speaker 2: that he works, very serious about his craft, very serious
- 1:03Speaker 2: about playing football and getting better. So I think he
- 1:07Speaker 2: fitts right in. And you know, guys like Strange and
- 1:10Speaker 2: those guys in that room already that have our workers
- 1:13Speaker 2: and wired that way I think will only help John.
- 1:18Speaker 1: I think a lot of people are surprised they went
- 1:19Speaker 1: with the tight end, but so far, Liam Cohen's pretty
- 1:21Speaker 1: excited about the second round pick they made.
- 1:23Speaker 3: Yeah, and the storyline sort of reminds you of what
- 1:26Speaker 3: two or three years ago when a guy named Brenton
- 1:28Speaker 3: Strange was drafted in the second round. No Jaguars fans
- 1:31Speaker 3: and you know, not many draft analysts knew much about him,
- 1:36Speaker 3: and from day one Brenton didn't play that much. Early
- 1:40Speaker 3: you could sort of tell he was an NFL tight
- 1:42Speaker 3: end and belonged. To me, this feels the same. I
- 1:46Speaker 3: think if Jaguar's had a first round pick, there'd be
- 1:49Speaker 3: a lot less focused on this second round pick. But look,
- 1:53Speaker 3: the whole idea of them bringing in tight ends revamping
- 1:56Speaker 3: that spot makes a lot of sense to me. I'm
- 1:58Speaker 3: not going to pretend to look at him on Saturday
- 2:01Speaker 3: and say he's going to be an all pro.
- 2:02Speaker 4: I don't know that.
- 2:03Speaker 3: Yet, but duff, he looks the part, and he looks
- 2:07Speaker 3: like he can do what they want him to do,
- 2:10Speaker 3: which is be sort of the balance to Strange.
- 2:12Speaker 4: Be able to block and be able to receive. That's
- 2:14Speaker 4: the key for this thing.
- 2:15Speaker 5: Hey, John, I was really impressed with him. I mean,
- 2:17Speaker 5: I liked his movement skills. I liked his length. I
- 2:20Speaker 5: mean he's a fluid athlete. He's not just a big
- 2:23Speaker 5: lumbering guy that can go down the field. I mean
- 2:25Speaker 5: the guy had shake about him, had fluid movement, as
- 2:28Speaker 5: I mentioned. And then other thing I liked about him
- 2:30Speaker 5: is both Nate and Tanner the other rookie tight end,
- 2:34Speaker 5: stayed out afterwards and caught balls and worked, and so
- 2:38Speaker 5: I was impressed with what I saw. I didn't know
- 2:40Speaker 5: that i'd see quite the athlete that I saw in
- 2:42Speaker 5: the field, and so impressed by.
- 2:44Speaker 1: That good first start for both tight ends. And our
- 2:47Speaker 1: second big thing today going to be group effort. Liam
- 2:49Speaker 1: Collen talked about the importance of rolling the rookies into
- 2:52Speaker 1: the off season program this week and having the veterans
- 2:55Speaker 1: teach the new guys.
- 2:58Speaker 2: We're all starting off so fresh at that time, and
- 3:01Speaker 2: you look at that was exactly what I mentioned to
- 3:03Speaker 2: the vets on Thursday with them, was, Man, when these
- 3:06Speaker 2: guys get in here on Monday and get integrated with
- 3:09Speaker 2: you all, I need you all to set the standards
- 3:13Speaker 2: and show these guys what our standards are of how
- 3:17Speaker 2: to operate in the meeting room settings and walk throughs
- 3:20Speaker 2: in practice because we need them. We need them to
- 3:23Speaker 2: come along as fast as possible. You saw it last
- 3:27Speaker 2: year with the amount of rookies that played for us
- 3:29Speaker 2: and made an impact and contribution. So yeah, they're competing
- 3:33Speaker 2: with each other for spots, but man, we need every
- 3:35Speaker 2: single guy duff.
- 3:38Speaker 1: This time last year, Liam Cohen was teaching staff and
- 3:41Speaker 1: players his system. Everybody was learning. But now that's their
- 3:44Speaker 1: second year. Round is a little bit easier because you
- 3:46Speaker 1: can kind of rely on some of the Vets to
- 3:47Speaker 1: help teach the.
- 3:48Speaker 5: Rookies, no question about it. And that's so valuable, so
- 3:51Speaker 5: valuable on the field, in the classroom, in the locker room,
- 3:53Speaker 5: even outside of the building in terms of things that
- 3:55Speaker 5: they want to get accomplished. So I think that the
- 3:58Speaker 5: Vets actually kind of looked for in some respects that
- 4:01Speaker 5: showing the way, much like they got shown when they
- 4:03Speaker 5: were rookies. And so I see that being a real
- 4:06Speaker 5: good mix right now, the veteran leadership the young guys
- 4:09Speaker 5: in learning how to beat jaguars, how to do things
- 4:11Speaker 5: a Jaguar way, if you will.
- 4:13Speaker 3: Yeah, that's particularly true if the Vets figure out that
- 4:16Speaker 3: a they're good kids and b that they're here for
- 4:19Speaker 3: the right reasons, meaning that they're going to fit in
- 4:22Speaker 3: my sense, the way these guys draft, most of these
- 4:24Speaker 3: guys will fit.
- 4:25Speaker 1: That.
- 4:26Speaker 3: To me, this is the It's the major story of
- 4:30Speaker 3: the off season, and it's not that sexy to talk about, meaning,
- 4:35Speaker 3: you know, how does culture, how do these guys fit in?
- 4:38Speaker 3: How does the year two thing really help the team?
- 4:42Speaker 3: I think it'll help them immeasurably next year. It's hard
- 4:45Speaker 3: on a show like this to hey, what did you
- 4:48Speaker 3: see different out there on Saturday that shows you that's happening.
- 4:51Speaker 3: I don't know if there's anything tangible. I think it's
- 4:53Speaker 3: going to run through the entire building and you know,
- 4:56Speaker 3: how this team is in year two. If it feels
- 4:59Speaker 3: like a program moving forward, if it's consistent, I think
- 5:02Speaker 3: we'll show a lot about where the franchise is for
- 5:06Speaker 3: the long haul next four or five years. Well.
- 5:08Speaker 5: Shoot, having the opportunity to watch that rookie mini camp
- 5:11Speaker 5: practice on Saturday, here's what I saw. I saw Crisp.
- 5:14Speaker 5: I saw organization. I saw the coaches doing you know,
- 5:17Speaker 5: moving and doing drills in a great, great way. That
- 5:20Speaker 5: didn't look like a team kind of just getting started.
- 5:22Speaker 5: It looked like they've been out there a while, and
- 5:23Speaker 5: this was just maybe their second practice I think on Saturday.
- 5:27Speaker 6: So I saw.
- 5:28Speaker 5: Crisp, upbeat, energetic practice going on with coaches and players alike.
- 5:33Speaker 5: Work and I love what I saw.
- 5:35Speaker 1: I can bring this into our final big thing today,
- 5:37Speaker 1: which is quick learners. We talked about that, bringing the
- 5:40Speaker 1: rookies into this program and getting them acclimated to this culture. John,
- 5:44Speaker 1: the players they picked this year, a lot of them
- 5:46Speaker 1: played significant amount of time in college football.
- 5:48Speaker 4: They're older players.
- 5:49Speaker 1: They're expecting them to get into the fold and get
- 5:51Speaker 1: ready to play right away.
- 5:53Speaker 3: Yeah, I'll defer to death a little bit on this one,
- 5:55Speaker 3: because he's been around guys, we bring him in, I
- 5:58Speaker 3: would since and what I've been told over the years
- 6:01Speaker 3: age difference. I meaning, if you're a twenty four to
- 6:05Speaker 3: twenty five year old duff who have been all the
- 6:07Speaker 3: way through college, especially with these nil guys who've switched programs.
- 6:13Speaker 4: A little bit, you would think they would.
- 6:15Speaker 3: Know how to practice, how to be pros, how to prepare,
- 6:19Speaker 3: how to come into a situation and sort of be ready.
- 6:22Speaker 4: You know, you have to warm up the car very long, right, you.
- 6:25Speaker 5: Know, so many of the guys, as you said, are
- 6:27Speaker 5: already older. They've got more plane reps, they've got more
- 6:31Speaker 5: academic reps, if you will, and they've been to different programs.
- 6:34Speaker 5: They've had to adjust. They've come in and had to
- 6:36Speaker 5: deal with new coaches, new locker rooms, everything, new drills
- 6:40Speaker 5: and everything else. So I think the arrival and the
- 6:43Speaker 5: fit is going to be much cleaner, much much better.
- 6:46Speaker 5: And frankly, again, the selection of the players, the character,
- 6:49Speaker 5: the leadership that you see, the guys that were captains,
- 6:52Speaker 5: guys that were MVPs, guys that had lauded careers. All
- 6:57Speaker 5: this fits in to make the personality for it to
- 6:58Speaker 5: be a pretty smooth transit.
- 7:01Speaker 1: All right, say with Aaron Jagsa, I'm coming up after
- 7:03Speaker 1: the break, we'll hear from some of those new rookies
- 7:05Speaker 1: from Rocky Mini Campus last weekend.
- 7:19Speaker 7: I'm super excited. Mostly I've said it before. I'm just
- 7:22Speaker 7: ready to go learn from these guys, these older guys.
- 7:25Speaker 7: They have a lot of time in the NFL in
- 7:26Speaker 7: their belt, and I'm ready to go learn. Obviously, I'm
- 7:30Speaker 7: new to this, so I'm gonna just keep my ears open.
- 7:34Speaker 1: Snap Barkature, So he's excited to go learn from the
- 7:36Speaker 1: other Vets, but he did say it was a little
- 7:39Speaker 1: different practice atmosphere compared to Texas, A and M. The
- 7:41Speaker 1: humidity I think was getting to them early. They all
- 7:44Speaker 1: dealt with it fine. I just think it's funny when
- 7:46Speaker 1: everybody has their first practice and do all and they're like, oh,
- 7:48Speaker 1: it's different.
- 7:49Speaker 3: Yeah, and a couple of people we're talking about half
- 7:52Speaker 3: it wasn't as bad as this place and this place,
- 7:54Speaker 3: and I'm thinking, wow, it's not August yet, it's way
- 7:57Speaker 3: of August.
- 7:58Speaker 5: Let me tell you right now, it found a little
- 7:59Speaker 5: bit like ooks out there. I can tell you that
- 8:01Speaker 5: right now. I thought it was human as heck.
- 8:04Speaker 1: They don't do a ton stuff. We talked a little
- 8:06Speaker 1: bit about this since you know, probably ten fifteen years now.
- 8:10Speaker 1: They don't really get into it in regum any camp
- 8:12Speaker 1: just because they want to kind of get them back
- 8:13Speaker 1: in conditioning and whatnot.
- 8:15Speaker 4: But what did you see out there?
- 8:16Speaker 1: I know you said it was really clean looking, but
- 8:18Speaker 1: just from some of the tight ends wide receivers, felt
- 8:20Speaker 1: like there were some possibilities there.
- 8:21Speaker 5: Oh heck, yeah, I was impressed with I was watching
- 8:24Speaker 5: that group pretty explice, you know, exclusively, and I saw
- 8:28Speaker 5: all kinds of good drills. I saw a good movement.
- 8:32Speaker 5: In particular the two tight ends Tanner and Nate. I
- 8:35Speaker 5: saw guys that can go up and get the ball.
- 8:37Speaker 4: I saw length.
- 8:38Speaker 5: I said, when you consider the ability for them to
- 8:41Speaker 5: get up and go get balls contested balls, and they've
- 8:44Speaker 5: got the height advantage of the length advantage they got. Wow,
- 8:46Speaker 5: was impressive as heck. And I just liked again the
- 8:50Speaker 5: work ethic that they all saw. The coaches knew what
- 8:52Speaker 5: they were doing. It was well choreographed, if you will,
- 8:55Speaker 5: very productive. It was no standing around. I mean they
- 8:58Speaker 5: got a lot done during that practice, which I think,
- 9:00Speaker 5: I thought again was very impressive.
- 9:01Speaker 3: I thought it was significant that the tight ends and
- 9:05Speaker 3: the receivers too, but you expected from the receivers, made
- 9:09Speaker 3: catching and running routes look really easy. I guess it
- 9:13Speaker 3: is easy against air. Anybody watching this said, well it's nobody, Guarden.
- 9:15Speaker 3: Of course it's easy. But they looked the part. Again,
- 9:19Speaker 3: that's what you look for right now. You want guys
- 9:23Speaker 3: who you're not. I'm sure Duffin, at some point during
- 9:26Speaker 3: your career you walked off after a mini camp practice and.
- 9:29Speaker 4: Like told your buddy, I don't know about this. Yeah
- 9:32Speaker 4: you don't want that.
- 9:32Speaker 5: Yeah, No, and I didn't see that.
- 9:34Speaker 6: I didn't see that at all.
- 9:35Speaker 5: I mean, really, kudos to the players and coaches alike.
- 9:38Speaker 5: I mean, this thing was moving now. There was no
- 9:41Speaker 5: standing around, no taking time to instruct or to set
- 9:44Speaker 5: up drills. They were rolling. So the preparation for the practice,
- 9:47Speaker 5: the awareness I think the classroom worked that they had
- 9:50Speaker 5: prior to going in the field. They made every minute
- 9:52Speaker 5: of that practice count in terms of evaluation, in terms
- 9:56Speaker 5: of getting better, in terms of like you just shaid,
- 9:58Speaker 5: I mean, it looked like a mid season out there.
- 10:00Speaker 5: And so again a lot of great work by a
- 10:03Speaker 5: lot of people.
- 10:03Speaker 3: And I would think, I it'd be hard to quantify this,
- 10:07Speaker 3: but all the transferring with Nil, you do get a
- 10:12Speaker 3: vibe the last couple of years that college for a
- 10:18Speaker 3: long time has been professional, but that it really is professional.
- 10:24Speaker 3: Meaning when you go to a new place, when you're
- 10:27Speaker 3: in college, and some of these guys made three stops
- 10:31Speaker 3: in college, you learn pretty quickly, Oh, I've got to
- 10:35Speaker 3: hit the ground run and how do I learn? How
- 10:38Speaker 3: do I get up to speed quickly? Because you're sort
- 10:42Speaker 3: of a higher gun, if you will, in college, so
- 10:46Speaker 3: you've got to come in ready to go. There's not
- 10:49Speaker 3: as much time for this ramp up, and I would
- 10:52Speaker 3: think it. I think it's seven out of the ten
- 10:54Speaker 3: had been transfers out of this bunch, so that probably
- 10:59Speaker 3: serves them well. And I think around the league moving forward,
- 11:02Speaker 3: you'll probably see a lot more of an element of
- 11:03Speaker 3: that of these guys being more just pro ready because
- 11:07Speaker 3: they've already sort of been through that process before.
- 11:10Speaker 1: Another one of the people that played in multiple schools,
- 11:13Speaker 1: Jalen Husky, the safety, played at Bowling Green and transferred
- 11:15Speaker 1: up to Maryland, and uh, he talked to us yesterday
- 11:18Speaker 1: or on Saturday, excuse me a little bit about his
- 11:20Speaker 1: motivations when he takes the field.
- 11:23Speaker 6: Because I play with a chip on my shoulder. You know,
- 11:25Speaker 6: I feel like, uh, my entire life, I've been.
- 11:28Speaker 4: A little overlooked or a little.
- 11:30Speaker 6: Overshadowed, and and I I can show that I can
- 11:33Speaker 6: produce too. You know, at every single stop, I produced,
- 11:36Speaker 6: and it's not gonna stop because I'm in the NFL.
- 11:38Speaker 6: You know, I plan to come here and and be
- 11:41Speaker 6: a great football player.
- 11:43Speaker 1: John, you always want to find what people's motivations are.
- 11:45Speaker 1: And I think when people always feel like they have
- 11:48Speaker 1: something to prove, they put that extra effort out there.
- 11:51Speaker 4: Well, teams and glads. Stony has talked about this a
- 11:54Speaker 4: little bit.
- 11:55Speaker 3: They like, especially in this nil time, a guy who's
- 11:58Speaker 3: done this path meaning bling Green to start, which is
- 12:01Speaker 3: not Big ten and then Maryland to finish, which is
- 12:05Speaker 3: so they like when they see that production continue at
- 12:12Speaker 3: the next level. I also think safety it is a
- 12:16Speaker 3: position where uh young players. It's rarer at that position
- 12:22Speaker 3: to a second contract guy, so Antonio Johnson, Jalen Husky,
- 12:28Speaker 3: these guys, it is going to be a position when
- 12:31Speaker 3: you're in the salary position of the Jaguars that it's
- 12:34Speaker 3: going to be.
- 12:34Speaker 4: Usually first through fourth year guy.
- 12:36Speaker 3: You're not gonna seeing Eric Murray around here moving forward,
- 12:40Speaker 3: meaning a tenth year guy. So it's gonna be young
- 12:42Speaker 3: players playing key roles, and I expect it would be
- 12:47Speaker 3: it would be a position that very much cycles moving forward,
- 12:49Speaker 3: rather than having what we had last year, which was
- 12:51Speaker 3: Dewey and Eric both on the field at the same time.
- 12:54Speaker 1: He's also that some versatility. I know he played cornerback
- 12:56Speaker 1: and safety in college. Coach, do you like when you
- 12:59Speaker 1: kind of have that versatile player where you feel like
- 13:01Speaker 1: you can play the multiplaces. I think they'll help play safety,
- 13:04Speaker 1: but just having that versatile.
- 13:05Speaker 5: Oh my gosh, guy, the value that he brings. You know,
- 13:07Speaker 5: this guy had over seven hundred snaps as a corner.
- 13:10Speaker 5: He had over one hundred snaps as a nickel, if
- 13:13Speaker 5: you will. And then the fact that he was a
- 13:15Speaker 5: ballhawk eleven interceptions, you know, in his career, had a
- 13:18Speaker 5: ton of them in high school as a corner and
- 13:20Speaker 5: as a player on defense. I mean, the versatility, that's
- 13:23Speaker 5: great value. You're getting a bang for your buck when
- 13:25Speaker 5: you've got a guy with this kind of experience. And
- 13:28Speaker 5: the other great thing about him. I thought the story
- 13:29Speaker 5: about he lost his sister. She passed away on February
- 13:34Speaker 5: I think twenty second, Yeah, twenty twenty two, And that's
- 13:37Speaker 5: why he's you know, dedicated wearing jersey number twenty two
- 13:41Speaker 5: in her memory. I saw a lot of real positive
- 13:44Speaker 5: things both in the character, not only the play and production,
- 13:47Speaker 5: but the character and the makeup of this player.
- 13:49Speaker 4: You can see why they like him.
- 13:50Speaker 3: You know, in the NFL these days, safeties can't be
- 13:55Speaker 3: linebackers anymore.
- 13:57Speaker 4: Yeah, they have to go around, they have to be
- 13:58Speaker 4: able to cover.
- 14:00Speaker 3: In fact, he's played corner, but brings this element that
- 14:04Speaker 3: camp talked about defense corinator Anythony Camp and Elly during
- 14:06Speaker 3: the draft of being able to hit, having played corner
- 14:11Speaker 3: being a big hitter is a rare combination.
- 14:14Speaker 4: And you know, I'm looking forward seeing this kid play.
- 14:16Speaker 3: I think their safety position has quietly become a strength.
- 14:19Speaker 1: I just know Camp is excited to coach him, and
- 14:21Speaker 1: I'm excited to see what he hits out of him
- 14:22Speaker 1: as well.
- 14:23Speaker 4: Yeah.
- 14:23Speaker 5: When you met with the first word out of his
- 14:25Speaker 5: mouth was hurt.
- 14:26Speaker 1: Hitter.
- 14:26Speaker 5: He's a hitter, yeah, you know. And the fact that
- 14:28Speaker 5: this guy is not afraid to get dirty and get
- 14:30Speaker 5: close to the box and make place again just adds
- 14:33Speaker 5: the value of the of the player.
- 14:35Speaker 1: We also got to speak to Emmanuel Pregnant, the guard
- 14:38Speaker 1: out of Oregon most recently, and he talked a little
- 14:40Speaker 1: bit about wanting to, you know, get in work with
- 14:43Speaker 1: some of the veterans and show them what he can
- 14:45Speaker 1: bring to the team.
- 14:48Speaker 8: I spoke to be honest, you know, to be with
- 14:49Speaker 8: those bits and and just learn from them. One of
- 14:54Speaker 8: my traits as a person is an honor and integrity.
- 14:57Speaker 8: So just coming in a room and being able to
- 15:01Speaker 8: get in with those guys that have played the game
- 15:02Speaker 8: for you know how uh so long. You know, all
- 15:06Speaker 8: those bets in there. I just want to be able
- 15:07Speaker 8: to learn to soak up everything I possibly can, so
- 15:11Speaker 8: I could become as great as they.
- 15:12Speaker 1: Are getting another really versatile player in there into the
- 15:17Speaker 1: line room. John. I know they're excited about him potentially
- 15:20Speaker 1: getting some playing time quickly.
- 15:22Speaker 3: Yeah, and you know, I wouldn't even remotely pretend to
- 15:25Speaker 3: analyze an offensive lineman off of a padded practice, but
- 15:29Speaker 3: he the things he can't teach are s our size
- 15:33Speaker 3: and looking like an an offensive guard.
- 15:36Speaker 4: He has the size and he looks like an offensive guard.
- 15:38Speaker 3: So everybody after the draft believed that he's gonna be
- 15:43Speaker 3: a guy who pushed it out and if he starts this year,
- 15:46Speaker 3: but he's part of the offensive line in the future,
- 15:48Speaker 3: so we'll find out August second, and they put pads
- 15:52Speaker 3: on right.
- 15:53Speaker 5: No question about that, John. But this guy watched him
- 15:56Speaker 5: on tape, and this guy is a guy that can
- 15:57Speaker 5: knock people off the football. You know, we had a
- 16:00Speaker 5: chance to visit with him and we asked him, okay, well,
- 16:02Speaker 5: what's your favorite playing football? And the word he used
- 16:04Speaker 5: was duo right away came right out, Well, the duo
- 16:07Speaker 5: is a inline direct run where you're double team and
- 16:11Speaker 5: knocking people back into the linebacker's laps. And that's if
- 16:15Speaker 5: I'm a line coach, that's what I want to hear
- 16:16Speaker 5: this guy say. But I mean the versatility that he has,
- 16:19Speaker 5: the I mean, this guy is a great looking player.
- 16:22Speaker 5: I mean he's a three hundred and fifteen pound guy
- 16:24Speaker 5: that has no fat on him. I mean, I love
- 16:27Speaker 5: what I saw out of him, and I really like
- 16:28Speaker 5: to just as you both have said, his attitude of
- 16:31Speaker 5: the way he's anxious to learn. He's not coming in
- 16:34Speaker 5: here like he's mister big stuff, but he understands what
- 16:37Speaker 5: it's going to take. I think he's got all the
- 16:38Speaker 5: traits you want. I see this guy being in a
- 16:40Speaker 5: line pretty quickly, and.
- 16:42Speaker 3: We're seeing the as time goes on, you see what
- 16:46Speaker 3: the team wants to be. We talked a lot last
- 16:49Speaker 3: year about I thought the most overlooked part of this
- 16:54Speaker 3: team last year was their toughness and how physical they were,
- 16:58Speaker 3: because I think because they were so good at the
- 17:00Speaker 3: end of the year and Trevor was getting MVP mentioned,
- 17:03Speaker 3: all the focus was on offense.
- 17:05Speaker 4: Trevor in the passing game.
- 17:09Speaker 3: This team was really good at the end of last
- 17:11Speaker 3: year because they were the toughest, most physical team on
- 17:13Speaker 3: the field most of the time. I think the offensive line,
- 17:17Speaker 3: the commitment drafting reagis drafting him, I mean drafting reachs
- 17:21Speaker 3: in the defensive line, the.
- 17:22Speaker 4: Commitment to that. I think you saw subtly in the
- 17:25Speaker 4: draft this year.
- 17:27Speaker 5: Yeah, I think this guy brings so much. I really
- 17:29Speaker 5: do you know when you also look at the fact
- 17:30Speaker 5: that this guy, like I said, had the availability endurabuilding
- 17:34Speaker 5: fifty three starts I think at three different programs ranked
- 17:38Speaker 5: I think number two by Pro Football focuses in run blocking,
- 17:42Speaker 5: but also in the top five and pass protection, four
- 17:45Speaker 5: hundred and fifty pass snaps. I think one quarterback snap
- 17:48Speaker 5: and maybe five pressures. I mean, so you're getting a
- 17:51Speaker 5: guy I think we're gonna feel real quickly his impact
- 17:54Speaker 5: on the offensive line very exciting.
- 17:56Speaker 1: Stay with us here on Jagsam. We're going to go
- 17:58Speaker 1: over a little this or that as we look ahead
- 18:00Speaker 1: to what the roster might be at the end of
- 18:01Speaker 1: the year. This over that, Welcome back into Jagsam. We're
- 18:15Speaker 1: gonna do all this or that as we look at
- 18:17Speaker 1: the roster and some of the undrafted free agents. Liam
- 18:20Speaker 1: Cohen talking after rookie mini camp on Saturday. It was
- 18:23Speaker 1: really excited with what he saw out of rookie running back.
- 18:26Speaker 1: To Mary Taylor, the.
- 18:28Speaker 2: Word you said production when you looked at him against
- 18:32Speaker 2: some of the I guess you call it top backs
- 18:34Speaker 2: in the draft production against the same teams. And what
- 18:38Speaker 2: that looked like I thought was pretty impressive. Obviously, the
- 18:43Speaker 2: season that Virginia had a lot of it had to
- 18:46Speaker 2: do with his success and his ability to both affect
- 18:49Speaker 2: the game in the run in the past game as well,
- 18:51Speaker 2: so people just slipped, like bounce off of him in ways.
- 18:55Speaker 2: I mean, he forced a lot of mistackles and he's
- 19:00Speaker 2: super sharp.
- 19:02Speaker 1: Seems they always confined a running back that they like
- 19:04Speaker 1: some traits of we obviously going into last year they
- 19:06Speaker 1: had with Quinn Allen Bachiltoton who they loved, and they
- 19:08Speaker 1: ended up carrying four running backs going into the season
- 19:11Speaker 1: with Tank Bigsby still on the roster and Travesy Tan
- 19:14Speaker 1: as well. John, do you think they'll have four running
- 19:16Speaker 1: backs again on the active roster? Do you think that
- 19:18Speaker 1: might be might be a tough ask.
- 19:20Speaker 3: Well, Y, you could see how that could be the
- 19:23Speaker 3: position where they keep three up, because you're probably gonna
- 19:27Speaker 3: have to keep a tight end one more tight end
- 19:31Speaker 3: up than you usually did last year. Now, those are
- 19:33Speaker 3: things we talk about in the off season and during
- 19:35Speaker 3: the season. Those numbers can kind of bounce from week
- 19:37Speaker 3: to week.
- 19:39Speaker 4: But they clearly they have a way to carry four
- 19:43Speaker 4: into the regular season. UH.
- 19:45Speaker 3: I would think this year the uh Jamari Taylor would
- 19:47Speaker 3: be the guy who probably starts out on the practice squad.
- 19:50Speaker 3: UH and the twenty years ago, starting off the practice
- 19:54Speaker 3: squad meant you probably were never gonna make in the NFL. Now,
- 19:57Speaker 3: a guy like that starts out on the practice squad
- 19:59Speaker 3: and it's much more of a developmental position where you
- 20:02Speaker 3: could see him really mattering at some point during the season.
- 20:05Speaker 3: I can see him being one of those guys who's
- 20:07Speaker 3: practice squad to start and then by the end of
- 20:10Speaker 3: the season is one of your thirds, especially if somebody
- 20:13Speaker 3: gets hurt up front.
- 20:14Speaker 5: Well, I agree with you, John, I just I think
- 20:17Speaker 5: this was a great addition to the squad. I mean,
- 20:19Speaker 5: when you see what this guy did in college and
- 20:21Speaker 5: the impact he had at Virginia, I mean, in many
- 20:24Speaker 5: many circles, a truly draftable player. When you can get
- 20:27Speaker 5: a guy like this who had the impact he had
- 20:30Speaker 5: on his collegiate program as an undrafted free agent, A
- 20:34Speaker 5: great get and watching him just like we all said,
- 20:37Speaker 5: I mean, I was really impressed with him. Again, we're
- 20:38Speaker 5: not out there in pats, but moving skills, catching the football, cuts,
- 20:42Speaker 5: change the direction, all plus by this guy. So I
- 20:45Speaker 5: think he will have an impact, and I think he'll
- 20:47Speaker 5: start off like you talked about, but I think we'll
- 20:49Speaker 5: see this guy at some point being the roster.
- 20:51Speaker 3: It was also not considered a well is considered one
- 20:54Speaker 3: of the worst running back classes overall in the draft
- 20:58Speaker 3: in a long time. So from what you read and heard,
- 21:01Speaker 3: the position overall sort of got devalued where most teams
- 21:04Speaker 3: were thinking we can get them anytime. So as a result,
- 21:09Speaker 3: running beast can get pushed up. So there were more
- 21:11Speaker 3: guys available, But I'm with Duff. He strikes he as
- 21:14Speaker 3: a guy who could easily matter around here and contribute,
- 21:19Speaker 3: certainly during that first three or four year rookie contract period.
- 21:24Speaker 4: I wouldn't overlook him at all.
- 21:25Speaker 1: Find self a spot. Maybe. We also got a look
- 21:28Speaker 1: at Joey Aguilar, the quarterback formerly of Tennessee, and Liam
- 21:31Speaker 1: Cohen talked about what he saw when he looked at
- 21:33Speaker 1: Aguilar's tape.
- 21:35Speaker 2: Yeah, I think Joways did a nice job of learning
- 21:39Speaker 2: a lot of information in a short period of time,
- 21:42Speaker 2: especially so much different than he's used to right, just
- 21:47Speaker 2: from a cadence standpoint, that's something that he's had to
- 21:50Speaker 2: get used to doing over the last forty eight hours.
- 21:53Speaker 2: I think you did a nice job of running the show,
- 21:55Speaker 2: if you will, handling. I mean, these weren't all just
- 21:59Speaker 2: call and run and play either, like we had cans
- 22:01Speaker 2: and oscars in there. And I think he did a
- 22:03Speaker 2: nice job operating. I thought he threw it better today probably.
- 22:07Speaker 2: I mean he had never throw into these guys ever,
- 22:09Speaker 2: so it's hard when you're asking them to be perfect
- 22:13Speaker 2: and no balls on the ground and timing in rhythm.
- 22:15Speaker 2: And I think it'll be fun to see him open
- 22:18Speaker 2: it up a little bit with the guys next week.
- 22:21Speaker 4: Yeah, both both of us.
- 22:22Speaker 1: I think Agilar caught our eye. What were you most
- 22:24Speaker 1: impressed was? Was what you saw on Saturday.
- 22:26Speaker 5: I think a lot of what just coach just talked about.
- 22:28Speaker 5: I mean I liked he was very confident. He's got
- 22:31Speaker 5: good movement skills. Boy, he's put together six three about
- 22:34Speaker 5: two twenty five. I liked how his footwork was. I
- 22:38Speaker 5: watched him throw the deep ball. He looks like he
- 22:39Speaker 5: can make all the throws.
- 22:41Speaker 1: You know.
- 22:41Speaker 5: Keep in mind too, he ran an offense last year
- 22:44Speaker 5: at Tennessee that probably ran as many snaps, maybe more snaps,
- 22:47Speaker 5: than anybody in the country, So he's understanding temple. He
- 22:50Speaker 5: can make quick decisions, he can get that offense rolling.
- 22:53Speaker 5: So I think again, another exciting addition, and see how
- 22:58Speaker 5: he you know, winds up not only fitting in the
- 23:00Speaker 5: quarterback room, but perhaps w working his way into being
- 23:04Speaker 5: a backup.
- 23:05Speaker 3: Yeah, it's it's Uh. I'd be surprised if this year
- 23:08Speaker 3: if Nick Mallins is in the backup so because of experience.
- 23:11Speaker 3: M uh, But I've been surprised before, so I I
- 23:14Speaker 3: wouldn't rule it out. It It strikes me that over
- 23:19Speaker 3: if Liam Cohen is a head coach in this year,
- 23:21Speaker 3: in this league forever long, he wants to be h,
- 23:25Speaker 3: I don't think he'll have any trouble getting this sort
- 23:28Speaker 3: of guy, meaning a a young quarterback. They're going to
- 23:32Speaker 3: want to go to where the offense is operating a
- 23:34Speaker 3: high level, with a qualities play caller with a reputation
- 23:39Speaker 3: for quarterbacks. So I'm sure, Uh, during underrafted free agency,
- 23:44Speaker 3: uh when his agent was trying to figure out.
- 23:46Speaker 4: Where to put this kid. M go play for this guy.
- 23:49Speaker 4: No matter what happens, you're gonna get a chance to develop.
- 23:51Speaker 4: And uh So I think it's a good situation for
- 23:53Speaker 4: Joey Gogua.
- 23:54Speaker 1: I think it's a good opportunity for him to if
- 23:56Speaker 1: he ser he clearly has the UH traits. He's able
- 23:58Speaker 1: to throw the football, he's smart with it. If he
- 24:00Speaker 1: can learn the system, he has an opportunity to move
- 24:02Speaker 1: up and then also maybe earn him self a starting
- 24:04Speaker 1: job somewhere else as well.
- 24:05Speaker 5: Yeah, I agree with that all the way. And again,
- 24:07Speaker 5: he just went from the UCLA system to the Tennessee system,
- 24:10Speaker 5: So all that change and all that adjustment is all
- 24:13Speaker 5: going to be a plus form, all right.
- 24:16Speaker 1: We also heard from Cohen who talked a little bit
- 24:18Speaker 1: about his first impressions of Emmanuel Pregnant.
- 24:21Speaker 2: Large man, you just some of that you can't coach, right,
- 24:25Speaker 2: and when you have big, strong hands and heavy hands
- 24:30Speaker 2: as an interior offensive lineman, I think is super helpful
- 24:34Speaker 2: to the cause, especially in past protection, to be able
- 24:37Speaker 2: to snap things off and then when you are putting
- 24:40Speaker 2: some one on one positions up front, being able to
- 24:43Speaker 2: not just get stalemates, but potentially move that person the
- 24:47Speaker 2: other direction.
- 24:50Speaker 4: Big man.
- 24:51Speaker 3: So sure, and I think what Liam was talking about
- 24:54Speaker 3: there was really key to what they're still trying to
- 24:57Speaker 3: get down the offensive line. This side of the line played
- 25:00Speaker 3: well for the most part last year.
- 25:03Speaker 4: They were coached well.
- 25:04Speaker 3: I thought they overall were very consistent, but I don't
- 25:08Speaker 3: think you could argue that they were the most dominant
- 25:12Speaker 3: physical offensive line blast teams.
- 25:14Speaker 4: Off the round. It's hard to do in this league.
- 25:16Speaker 3: I'm not criticizing the line, but I do think they
- 25:18Speaker 3: want to continue what Liam was talking about. Instead of
- 25:23Speaker 3: some stalemates, maybe win some of those one on ones
- 25:25Speaker 3: where you can. It's really hard in this day and
- 25:27Speaker 3: age to have to drive people off the ball. It's
- 25:30Speaker 3: a little bit of a missover, but they'd like to
- 25:32Speaker 3: be able to do it better than they did last year,
- 25:33Speaker 3: and be a little better in short yardage.
- 25:35Speaker 5: No question about it. Not only in short yardage, but
- 25:38Speaker 5: even in four minutes or wet it's got to have
- 25:41Speaker 5: that's probably short yard but when we have to control
- 25:44Speaker 5: the ball, we've got to get the one yard and
- 25:47Speaker 5: everybody in the stadum knows we got to run. We
- 25:49Speaker 5: do have to knock them off the ball, get some displacement.
- 25:52Speaker 5: And again, as you mentioned, Kay big man, I mean, cheez,
- 25:55Speaker 5: this is this guy you want to see coming off
- 25:56Speaker 5: the bush. I mean, it's exactly what you're looking for.
- 25:59Speaker 5: There's a big guy who's who's got power about him,
- 26:02Speaker 5: who we mentioned earlier, durability. I like where his mindset
- 26:05Speaker 5: is in terms of, you know, being a physical player.
- 26:08Speaker 5: Everything that I think they're trying to shape and put
- 26:10Speaker 5: together in terms of the line and the offense.
- 26:12Speaker 4: This guy represents John.
- 26:14Speaker 1: When you look at the O line this year, do
- 26:16Speaker 1: you think Week one, the starting five is going to
- 26:17Speaker 1: be the same or do you think it'll be different.
- 26:19Speaker 3: I think I think whyatt Mylon has has a good
- 26:22Speaker 3: chance to.
- 26:23Speaker 4: Push Patrick McCarry.
- 26:26Speaker 3: And when I say that, I think about how this
- 26:29Speaker 3: group wanted to line up last year. The staff thinks
- 26:34Speaker 3: that the offensive line really is eight or nine and
- 26:37Speaker 3: they like having that Cole van Landon type that they
- 26:40Speaker 3: can move all around.
- 26:41Speaker 4: I think McCary fits that he can do that.
- 26:44Speaker 3: Chuma can do that a little bit too, But I
- 26:47Speaker 3: think Mylon, the third round guy last year, who is
- 26:51Speaker 3: clearly a guy they think can start at the long term. Ideally,
- 26:55Speaker 3: what you want is drafting second, third, fourth round lineman,
- 26:59Speaker 3: letting them develop as needed depth for a year, and
- 27:05Speaker 3: then starting when they're ready. That would be your ideal
- 27:08Speaker 3: timeline for these guys. It'd be your ideal timeline for Pregnant.
- 27:12Speaker 3: So I think I think Pregnant. I think we talked
- 27:15Speaker 3: about it during the break. It seems like a guy
- 27:17Speaker 3: who could be very, very ready and don't pull a
- 27:20Speaker 3: Walley Pip on him.
- 27:22Speaker 5: I just liked how you explain that in terms of,
- 27:24Speaker 5: you know, the way this offensive line is put together.
- 27:27Speaker 5: I was highly impressed last year in the versatility that
- 27:30Speaker 5: they got with their players. They weren't just pigeonholed into
- 27:34Speaker 5: one position. They got guys that have a multiple position
- 27:37Speaker 5: flex if you will, position flex, and I like that mindset.
- 27:41Speaker 5: I think that served him well. And I think this player,
- 27:43Speaker 5: whether he plays left guard or right guard's gonna add
- 27:46Speaker 5: to that a couple with the players coming back.
- 27:48Speaker 1: All right, stay with you, we'll tell you what's coming
- 27:50Speaker 1: up the rest of the week. Let's take your season
- 28:03Speaker 1: to the next level. Of the Jaguars return to the
- 28:05Speaker 1: bank in twenty twenty six, become a season ticket number
- 28:07Speaker 1: and unlock exclusive access to ticket events, members only experiences,
- 28:11Speaker 1: and NFL Membership club perks and more. Availability is gonna
- 28:14Speaker 1: be limited, of course, so make sure you check things
- 28:17Speaker 1: out on Jaguars dot com slash season tickets to secure
- 28:20Speaker 1: your spot. I bring it the schedule on Thursday. I
- 28:24Speaker 1: know John's excited about that. Any predictions for you today.
- 28:29Speaker 4: Look I do.
- 28:31Speaker 3: I've been as long enough to know that any schedule
- 28:33Speaker 3: prediction always sounds great until the schedule comes out, and
- 28:38Speaker 3: then it's probably the most unpredictable part of the NFL offseason.
- 28:43Speaker 3: Everything's they're gonna get it. Everythinks they've got it. Then
- 28:45Speaker 3: it comes out and it's it's completely off. So I
- 28:48Speaker 3: think the things people are watching for obviously how many
- 28:51Speaker 3: primetime games where you open and I think people are
- 28:53Speaker 3: interested in in Uh, well, if they play on Thanksgiving
- 28:56Speaker 3: this year, I mean that's a big deal for fans
- 28:58Speaker 3: as team's never done it, you're playing at Dallas.
- 29:01Speaker 4: I don't have any feel for whether they will get that.
- 29:04Speaker 4: They didn't know this.
- 29:05Speaker 3: Covering a team that plays on Thanksgiving is really cool
- 29:08Speaker 3: because you get a short week going in and then
- 29:10Speaker 3: you're done. So it's I've only done it once, but
- 29:14Speaker 3: I enjoyed covering the game on Thanksgiving.
- 29:16Speaker 1: I don't want to burst your bubble, but I think
- 29:17Speaker 1: they already came out with the Thanksgiving We didn't get.
- 29:19Speaker 4: It, okay, all right, I thought, So.
- 29:22Speaker 1: You're safe and Sherry will have the day to celebrate.
- 29:24Speaker 4: I'm bad, sorry about that.
- 29:26Speaker 1: Cowboys Eagles, So that'll be a little more entertaining, I'm
- 29:29Speaker 1: sure for the rivalry fans there. But we're going back
- 29:32Speaker 1: to London. And then how quickly coached do you guys
- 29:34Speaker 1: get with the schedule and start looking at stuff and
- 29:37Speaker 1: how that plans out.
- 29:37Speaker 5: As a coach right away, you know, we already know
- 29:40Speaker 5: year to year who your opponents are going to be,
- 29:42Speaker 5: but you don't know the order, and so you know,
- 29:45Speaker 5: to do an intense study on team. You may play
- 29:48Speaker 5: in December or in late November. You know, you're not
- 29:52Speaker 5: quite as urgent to do that, but the team ship
- 29:54Speaker 5: you can expose your staff, to expose your players to
- 29:57Speaker 5: both in the OTAs and training camp. With the early
- 30:00Speaker 5: sh chronological order, that's important. So uh, I was always
- 30:04Speaker 5: couldn't wait to see it, you know, And so now
- 30:06Speaker 5: we can really focus in Okay, we gotta study boom
- 30:09Speaker 5: boom boom and get ready and impact start to input
- 30:12Speaker 5: those plays, those thoughts, their strategy into our practice brand.
- 30:16Speaker 1: Alright, we'll be back with you guys later this week,
- 30:18Speaker 1: once we get that schedule to have a schedule analysis
- 30:20Speaker 1: for you, and of course happy Hour and Thursday. I'm
- 30:22Speaker 1: sure we'll talk about it as well, but we appreciate you.
- 30:24Speaker 1: We'll see you next week on Jack's Am.
