Transcript
- 0:00Now we're back at the Dunken Music Lounge here in iHeart headquarters in Hartford.
- 0:04But yukom men's basketball coach showed Stan Hurley with us and a good crowd on
- 0:09hand. Coach, we're still getting over less less spring. I mean,
- 0:12man, it was perfection the way it went. And I heard everywhere we
- 0:17went from high level analysts in this game, and you know a lot of
- 0:22them they just loved watching Yukon play. It was a beautiful thing. And
- 0:26when this game's played like that, sharing the ball, moving it and just
- 0:30getting five people involved in the same goal, there's nothing better than that.
- 0:34And a lot of people recognize that. Yeah, it takes, you know,
- 0:38talent, It takes you know, the right type of people. You
- 0:42know, people that want to go and win in college and the game,
- 0:46it's gotten crazy. You got the portal, you got nil, you know,
- 0:50you got the NBA, which is almost becoming like a third thing you
- 0:54don't even stress as much about, so it's even harder to get. You
- 1:00know, like the young people in basketball to like to be about the place
- 1:06and to be where their feet are and care about winning and value that over
- 1:11Instagram followers and likes and clicks and and il stuff, so we attract I
- 1:18think, you know, beautiful, beautiful guys that like are all about the
- 1:22right stuff, and you know they share the game with each other, and
- 1:26you know, it's just we got a good formula right now. Yeah,
- 1:30there's no question about it. And I got to meet the freshmen over the
- 1:34last few weeks the Blue White Night. Those guys are impressive. I mean,
- 1:38they're smart dudes, they care. You can tell they're all about the
- 1:42team. And you can't find guys like that sometimes it's hard today in this
- 1:48environment we live in. How do you get down to the nuts and boltzer
- 1:51guys like that and find guys like that? I mean, you just you
- 1:55got to hold out for the combination of like the talent you need and want
- 2:00then to pedigree, you know, like really good families, like smart guys,
- 2:07like just trying to get good traits, you know, like work,
- 2:12ethic, competitiveness. You know, there's basketball stuff, like you got to
- 2:15be athletic enough. You've got to be tall enough for your position. You
- 2:17know, nowadays in today's game, you really need to be able to pass
- 2:23and shoot. But like we're looking for like families that are gonna let us
- 2:27coach them and let us be honest with them, because a lot of parents
- 2:30now that you know that, they're not as accountable and the first time that
- 2:36they hear know if it's from me in their life, especially how hard I
- 2:40coach, because I don't say it no like this in practice, I say
- 2:45it way louder. Yeah, I'm sure, way more animated, you know.
- 2:47So, Yeah, we try to you know, like I don't get
- 2:52text messages during the season from a parent saying like, you're you're doing a
- 2:58bad job with my son. Get text message during the season from parents saying
- 3:01like, my son's got to be better for you guys, And that's when
- 3:05you know you've got it where you want to have it. Yeah, that's
- 3:07that's crucial, no question. Just wrapping up our discussion about that tournament last
- 3:12year. Yeah, you played the fast paced I own a Gales Round one.
- 3:15You get Saint Mary's. Now, that was a dark and good team
- 3:17from the West Coast Conference. They were excellent. One of their guys got
- 3:22hurt in that game. I think that hurt them. But you were able
- 3:24to beat a different kind of team, you know, two days after beating
- 3:27Iona, So that goes back to your coaching staff and scouting and knowing what
- 3:31you can do. Tell me about that, because that's not easy. You
- 3:35get twenty four hours. You got to figure it out. You really haven't
- 3:38seen them in person. I mean it's a process. So the staff is
- 3:43critical. You know Tom, who's you know, Tom Moore, who brings
- 3:47like just the experience and head coach experience and personality wise. He's a lot
- 3:53different than me. So it's good. You don't want all if it was
- 3:55all just people like me, that could be a prop. It would be
- 4:00just you need a mix. And you know, so Tom is just a
- 4:04you know, he's in his late fifties. I don't call him an elder
- 4:08statesman. You know, no jokes on the show by the way, No
- 4:12sorry, sorry Tolland Connecticut. That's that's Tom spot Kamani and Luke, it's
- 4:19you know, I've been lucky to have some great coaches coach with me over
- 4:23the course of my career. And you know, Luke and Kamani are as
- 4:27good as any in terms of, uh, the recruiting, the game prep.
- 4:30I mean they split the scouts. They do so much in recruiting,
- 4:35they so much so much. Positionally, Kamani works with the perimeter people.
- 4:40Luke works with the front court players. You know. Kamani helps a lot
- 4:44with like defensive type of ideas and strategy. Luke helps with the offensive strategies
- 4:49and different things. So it's just it's a great staff. You got to
- 4:55the second weekend, you had Arkansas that that is a bunch of guys ready
- 5:00for the NBA, according to their game notes. I think I told you
- 5:03that. I said, Dan, do you realize in their game notes they're
- 5:06they're putting down the level of draft positions their players are going to be right
- 5:11in the game notes. I felt like this might sound a little strange,
- 5:15but I felt like we had them right where we wanted them. Because they
- 5:16were worried about that, we're worried about taking care of it right now.
- 5:19Yeah, that really talented players. You know, a lottery, you know,
- 5:24two first round picks one in a lottery, two more. I think
- 5:27we're picked. But you know the level we were playing at there and then
- 5:32getting out of that first weekend, that's a real thing at Yukon, Like
- 5:36that first game in the tournament is it's heavy, you know, because of
- 5:41the history. Then when you get through that first game, you start to
- 5:46feel like you're supposed to make a run when you put on the Yukon jersey.
- 5:48But yeah, it's a the first game. Now, I don't feel
- 5:53like that. It feels like you're wearing a weighted vest. You win that
- 5:58first game and it's like, this is what Yukon does, and then it
- 6:00becomes a weapon. So after Arkansas Gonzaga, I mean, how many final
- 6:06fours? Mark few twenty plus years winning his conference every year? Final four
- 6:12type material? I mean, you really put it to them. I never
- 6:15forget this. At halftime, I left the broadcast here, I went in
- 6:18the back for am and it came back. They were coming out of their
- 6:20locker room. I'd never seen a team slumped and not energetic about coming back
- 6:27for a second half. I mean, you took a lot out of that
- 6:29team in the first half. Yeah, I mean, listen, if we
- 6:30play harder than you and we're more connected, and then we play we have
- 6:36a better offense than you, a better defense, and we out rebound you,
- 6:41it doesn't matter where the game's played. You know. It's like,
- 6:44so for us, it's how dominant we were. We're a high assist team,
- 6:48so the you know, the ball moves were where the game was played
- 6:53in Vegas. And obviously when you see the bracket drop, you see uc
- 6:57LA and Gonzaga, and you're saying yourself, were gonna have to beat one
- 7:00of them in Vegas where you know they're going to have a, you know,
- 7:02a more of a home court type of feel to it, and they
- 7:06did. By the way, there were a lot of UCLA and Gonzaga fans
- 7:11know uh that Duke Well, Kobe said it right, Kobe Bryant to Lake,
- 7:15Kobe Booze, don't block donks, you know all right? Dan hurdles
- 7:19with us, you con men's basketball coaches show. We took a quick break.
- 7:23We'll be back after this onlear Field
