- 0:15[SPEAKER_02]: It is that time of week, suitors on a side podcast.
- 0:18[SPEAKER_02]: Fire and up here on a Wednesday.
- 0:21[SPEAKER_02]: We've almost hit the midpoint of October.
- 0:24[SPEAKER_02]: And I don't know what it's like out there where you're listening to your listener, but we are almost to fall.
- 0:31[SPEAKER_02]: which is right on time considering Oklahoma has made their way north from Dallas a massive massive victory that we were you capped on the pod here and we will continue to talk about and what it means for the rest of the season right chap and here joined by the usual pod crew we've got our dinner belleter john Hoover up in Tulsa whoover in the nine one eight at least nine one eight whoo how you beat uh everything's good here man great great weather
- 1:00[SPEAKER_02]: Yeah, it was the show this morning.
- 1:02[SPEAKER_02]: It was dump in rain.
- 1:03[SPEAKER_02]: I was like, this is glorious.
- 1:04[SPEAKER_02]: And the great night down's checked in.
- 1:07[SPEAKER_02]: Ethan's pops.
- 1:08[SPEAKER_02]: And he was like, it is flooding in Hydro.
- 1:09[SPEAKER_02]: And I was like, well, be safe guys.
- 1:11[SPEAKER_02]: And I was like, I'm sorry.
- 1:12[SPEAKER_02]: It's a light rain for me.
- 1:13[SPEAKER_02]: Be safe.
- 1:14[SPEAKER_02]: Be safe and deed.
- 1:15[SPEAKER_02]: Ryan Aber has made his way back up.
- 1:18[SPEAKER_02]: Aber, how you'd be?
- 1:19[SPEAKER_02]: Did you survive the week, which was just a lot of sitting next to me in a car, which as Carson knows, is always a dangerous place to be.
- 1:27[SPEAKER_03]: It was a little touching go for a little bit, but we made it through and nice to experience the weather today.
- 1:35[SPEAKER_03]: It was a little raining a little bit heavier than where you experienced it, but at least we didn't have the flooding.
- 1:44[SPEAKER_02]: Well, as you know, as someone who peruses some of my old stomping grabs, avoid 19th street today, because that bridge that we under one need to say today, just avoid 19th street, you know, fair, very, very fair.
- 1:59[SPEAKER_02]: Also have our man, Carson Field, Carson, how you'd be, and everything good as we are ready to fire this thing back up.
- 2:06[SPEAKER_02]: And you're going to have to carry a crack on a jacket or two after getting the sunblock in the cotton bowl.
- 2:11[SPEAKER_02]: You're going to get a jacket on
- 2:14[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah, no kidding.
- 2:15[SPEAKER_00]: The golf course I love on the course down in Norman.
- 2:17[SPEAKER_00]: It is it's pretty flooded.
- 2:19[SPEAKER_00]: The roads aren't too bad, but man, the course.
- 2:21[SPEAKER_00]: It's not going to be playable for a while.
- 2:23[SPEAKER_00]: That's a bummer about looking forward to the cooler temperatures.
- 2:26[SPEAKER_00]: It looks like a high in the low 60s for that game.
- 2:28[SPEAKER_00]: So excited to be putting a jacket on, opposed to the short sun block that we've had to deal with for the last month plus.
- 2:36[SPEAKER_02]: Amen to that.
- 2:38[SPEAKER_02]: As we know, we go.
- 2:39[SPEAKER_02]: We burn our butts off and Dallas.
- 2:41[SPEAKER_02]: They'll be come back and we usually get fall.
- 2:43[SPEAKER_02]: And it's going to be an easier start to fall for everybody in Norman, 27, 24.
- 2:48[SPEAKER_02]: I know the team has had to turn the page, but this has been a week of continuing to look back at the iconic Red River rivalry contest that we all took in on Saturday.
- 2:58[SPEAKER_02]: Whove, I got to say, I'm sorry.
- 3:01[SPEAKER_02]: We sent you out with a just objectively terrible
- 3:05[SPEAKER_02]: you opt to stay back, hang back, help us out, pull the strings behind the scenes, and the red river shoot out delivers an instant classic.
- 3:13[SPEAKER_02]: What's going on there?
- 3:15[SPEAKER_01]: Well, just first of all, I'm so proud of the staff that I've hired you guys are all incredible.
- 3:21[SPEAKER_01]: Great people, great workers, and know your stuff when it comes to owe you football, and we proved all of that last week when you guys are in Dallas.
- 3:30[SPEAKER_01]: Interrupted my streak of 22 consecutive OU Texas games just feel like at this stage it's kind of you know best if I Start to throttle back a little bit maybe not grind like our usual grind to to the
- 3:46[SPEAKER_01]: every game and back like you guys are going to be doing.
- 3:50[SPEAKER_01]: So yeah, we had what for in the for in the press box at the end of the game.
- 3:53[SPEAKER_01]: But three in the box one on the field you guys kicked ass man.
- 3:56[SPEAKER_01]: It was a super proud of y'all.
- 3:59[SPEAKER_01]: I didn't mind missing my street boys.
- 4:00[SPEAKER_01]: I had a good Saturday night.
- 4:03[SPEAKER_02]: I thought you were about to say, John, that we approved our knowledge Welcome to football by the CSUNS side staff having a clean sweep of picking Texas doing the football game and then Oklahoma goes out there.
- 4:13[SPEAKER_02]: They get a pump block, they get a pick six, another quarterly gillary pick, Louis to Vaughn with a 42 yard rush out of nowhere.
- 4:20[SPEAKER_01]: And we're trying to tell you the same thing, yeah.
- 4:23[SPEAKER_01]: Are we experts on the on your football or something who who could have seen that offensive line come to life like it did who could have seen the running a pop off 86 or 85 yards in the second half I mean seriously That's impressive and then who would have seen John material go an entire four quarters without a turnover that was something that none of us not and I mean nobody in the media as I recall saw that
- 4:44[SPEAKER_02]: It was outstate at least we didn't have like a 557 hanging out there like bludds or inside taxes or whatever it was, chat up catch let's dive in talking to the guys on Monday night Carson I think one of the big thieves obviously any time you have a game like this part of it is going to be
- 5:02[SPEAKER_02]: Texas hangover, if you lose the game, it takes his beat.
- 5:05[SPEAKER_02]: You twice, if you win the game, that was great.
- 5:07[SPEAKER_02]: And it was an incredible moment, but it can't just be a moment in this season.
- 5:12[SPEAKER_02]: That's always going to be an angle of it.
- 5:14[SPEAKER_02]: But I really get the vibe and for the offense, it's like, that really needs to be the start of something.
- 5:19[SPEAKER_02]: And not that that means they go out and score 50 points in 600 yards or anything crazy like that.
- 5:23[SPEAKER_02]: I can still talk to you.
- 5:24[SPEAKER_02]: But just the confidence that, like, jomits here talked about, and no a best talked about on Monday night.
- 5:28[SPEAKER_02]: They can come from a game like that.
- 5:31[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah, we've talked about this before, but the offense just needs to be passable with how good this defense is, how good the special teams can be and obviously were at the cotton bowl late in that game.
- 5:42[SPEAKER_00]: Um, so this offense doesn't have to all the sudden turn into one of the best units in the SEC.
- 5:47[SPEAKER_00]: It just has to avoid the cosplay turnovers.
- 5:49[SPEAKER_00]: They have to run better than they have.
- 5:51[SPEAKER_00]: through the first five games of the season, they did that, they put together a strong ear performance, I wouldn't even say a strong performance, but Lloyd Avant had some nice touches, Tory Blaylock also got himself involved.
- 6:03[SPEAKER_00]: There were plenty of things to build on their genre tier, wasn't great, didn't put up flashy numbers, but he did the most important thing which was avoiding a turnover, that's something that he can certainly build on against
- 6:20[SPEAKER_02]: It's something to the, it's not just, you got a great defense.
- 6:25[SPEAKER_02]: Don't break them over the Coles basically, Ryan, we talked to Doug Deacon on Monday night.
- 6:30[SPEAKER_02]: The special teams coordinator, which first off, if they just want to make Doug Deacon of it, I know we've said this before, but anytime Doug Deacon wants to come speak to us, Doug Deacon comes speak to us, what a fantastic interview.
- 6:39[SPEAKER_02]: But if you watch Brent's coaches show the video version of it on Sunday, he talked about
- 6:49[SPEAKER_02]: uh... we got to talk to dug deep in on monday night and uh... abraid it's not just a protect the defensive if you can just pick up a couple first downs here and there and work with the defense to put yourselves in spots like that you've got a special to use you to the wants to stand up and try and win you football games too
- 7:07[SPEAKER_03]: Yeah, no kidding, and they did an incredible job on Saturday.
- 7:12[SPEAKER_03]: It making those plays, not only the block punt that obviously has been talked about a lot with the Golden Hat play, but the punt coverage has been really good.
- 7:23[SPEAKER_03]: Brady, Trantham wrote about that.
- 7:25[SPEAKER_03]: And then obviously, I think a big thing moving forward is just take Sandell and the,
- 7:34[SPEAKER_03]: The addition of confidence to him after missing three kicks in a row, including the first one against Texas, he comes back, hits a couple of really big ones and gets back to kicking the way.
- 7:47[SPEAKER_03]: Not only the fact that it went through, but also kicking the way he was early in the season and dating back to last year with his form and things like that.
- 8:02[SPEAKER_03]: And then, you know, like we've all said, the offense doesn't have to be just out of this world.
- 8:09[SPEAKER_03]: If they can do what they did on Saturday, avoid turnovers, make the plays when you really need them.
- 8:16[SPEAKER_03]: And I'm talking about some of the Lloyd Avant runs, especially in the third quarter.
- 8:20[SPEAKER_03]: And then the obviously the two catches by Isaiah, Satan, you late.
- 8:24[SPEAKER_03]: That's going to win you a lot of football games, you know, maybe not get you where you want, but it's going to take a significant step forward compared to where they have been.
- 8:34[SPEAKER_02]: It's a massive spot that Oklahoma finds themselves in here, John.
- 8:38[SPEAKER_02]: And I don't know.
- 8:40[SPEAKER_02]: It's kind of like two paths.
- 8:41[SPEAKER_02]: If you want to go back to the last time that Oklahoma beat Texas on our Brent Venables, you did not get the response that you needed.
- 8:47[SPEAKER_02]: You went into a by week, and then on the other side of that, a pretty mediocre UCF team came to Norman.
- 8:53[SPEAKER_02]: they needed to repel two point conversion to avoid at least like an over time situation.
- 8:58[SPEAKER_02]: And then after that, you had the losses at Kansas and the losses at Oklahoma State or last at Oklahoma State to really tank a season that should have put you in the Big Tall Championship game.
- 9:08[SPEAKER_02]: Maybe Texas, you should go to the Big Tall Championship game.
- 9:10[SPEAKER_02]: A year ago, it's not the Texas game, though.
- 9:13[SPEAKER_02]: It is
- 9:14[SPEAKER_02]: You have a Tennessee big massive win by week.
- 9:17[SPEAKER_02]: You go to Tuscaloosa, big massive win.
- 9:19[SPEAKER_02]: You come out and still have to close that against Missouri and LSU.
- 9:23[SPEAKER_02]: You didn't get awesome showings, but I thought that was more of just like poor decisions specifically by geometry as opposed to like a big hangover things like that.
- 9:32[SPEAKER_02]: As you kind of trace through it this week, John, for the website, we'll see us on aside.com.
- 9:37[SPEAKER_02]: But what you kind of find, what you dig up as far as like local home in this spot and their ability to not have a hangover from the Texas game is what they're going to need with a good Kentucky team coming in.
- 9:47[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, it's not, there's not a lot of data to work with in Brimvenville's career, you know, this is season five and only once has his team defeated Texas.
- 9:57[SPEAKER_01]: So what did they do afterwards?
- 9:58[SPEAKER_01]: You just mentioned it almost lost the use could have lost the UCF.
- 10:03[SPEAKER_01]: Certainly could have gone over time like you said, and then drop those two road games you lose at At Kansas and at Oklahoma State and there were mistakes up and down the field offense defense Special teams and especially coaching in those two losses and there's you know We didn't pin it back then In 2023 on a Texas hangover
- 10:29[SPEAKER_01]: But that top it came up over the during the three weeks ban.
- 10:32[SPEAKER_01]: Hey, you guys, you know, still okay from that super emotionally high charge win.
- 10:36[SPEAKER_01]: I mean, you guys remember the Danny Stuttman's smoke in the cigar and he's selling T-shirts the next day, you know?
- 10:42[SPEAKER_01]: It's like...
- 10:43[SPEAKER_01]: this this is the new college football you know guys can can sell their name image and likeness and and make a couple of a few thousand dollars several thousand dollars and I think it was just it was a weird kind of a period of time where things were happening kind of faster than everybody could keep up with.
- 11:01[SPEAKER_01]: So maybe maybe there's a little bit play there but the whole three week stretch or four week stretch and even maybe looking back on it at the end of the season
- 11:09[SPEAKER_01]: did not buy into the idea that there that was any that those losses were anything to do with the Texas hangover.
- 11:15[SPEAKER_01]: They almost won all three games had had they won either of the two that they lost.
- 11:20[SPEAKER_01]: They would have been in the big 12 championship game, possibly college football playoff, but you know couldn't take care of business and then you've spin it forward to this week.
- 11:30[SPEAKER_01]: and you've got you know the the Monday morning football writers associated comes out names Oklahoma the pop-tarts national team of the week by golly okay that's cool whatever pick six maven he's the he's the new understate i don't know he's he's the best pick six out of guy in the country i think right now payton bow and he gets the gym thought forward for the national defensive back of the week
- 11:55[SPEAKER_01]: And the only line could get some random girls worth for the walk on her former walk on the week and then take sandals one of the three grows out of ward stars of the week.
- 12:03[SPEAKER_01]: Everybody's handing these guys right now their plodits in their laurels and hey we love you everybody loves you you're really good look how good you're the team of the week you're the bet and that's like the worst thing you talk about rat poison that's the worst thing break I'll be dealing with right now is
- 12:19[SPEAKER_01]: You know, uh, I don't know, and I owe stuff popping up again, you know, the, the block punt or the, this pick six or something, you know, crazy stuff like that, um, like the dating, it starts with T-shirt situation, but everybody's got the, everybody got the worth of golden hat, right?
- 12:37[SPEAKER_01]: Everybody got a bit, and maybe that was, I mean, it was a great little moment, but maybe that needs to be that moment and don't let it trickle into this week.
- 12:47[SPEAKER_02]: everybody including the volleyball team on Sunday.
- 12:49[SPEAKER_02]: It's something Carson that you look at and I think that Oklahoma probably has faith and this little bit is that that team a couple years ago, that was a defense still in flux.
- 13:00[SPEAKER_02]: It was not quite the label.
- 13:02[SPEAKER_02]: I think that you would put on Brent Minimal's defense.
- 13:04[SPEAKER_02]: It was just year two.
- 13:05[SPEAKER_02]: Certainly what you've seen these last
- 13:07[SPEAKER_02]: two years and you look to a year ago, Hailing the Alabama win on the back of the, the Bobby can the Tennessee win.
- 13:14[SPEAKER_02]: The touch would go against Missouri and LSU had nothing to do with the defense.
- 13:19[SPEAKER_02]: All right, they're putting terrible spots over and over again.
- 13:22[SPEAKER_02]: They repell Missouri, they repell LSU and those defensive leaders like Peyton Bowen as was talked about this week was the immediate guy that before they even left the fairgrounds is like, this is awesome.
- 13:33[SPEAKER_02]: Take care of business next week.
- 13:35[SPEAKER_02]: Is this a group that has the veteran leadership has been in the SEC a couple of your stuff that they may not go out and win on Saturday, but it's not because they're still thinking about the Texas law.
- 13:43[SPEAKER_02]: It won't.
- 13:45[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah, you would think so.
- 13:46[SPEAKER_00]: I think they've learned a lot from those last two kind of ugly wins, like you mentioned.
- 13:49[SPEAKER_00]: I don't think both review our Michael Van Buyer and ever want to hear the name David Stone ever again.
- 13:54[SPEAKER_00]: The defense dominated those games really responded well after those big wins against Tennessee and Alabama, like you said.
- 14:02[SPEAKER_00]: And I think this defense has the leadership has the talent to do so again.
- 14:06[SPEAKER_00]: Are there things to clean up from the Texas game?
- 14:08[SPEAKER_00]: Absolutely.
- 14:09[SPEAKER_00]: They made the longhorns made some big plays.
- 14:12[SPEAKER_00]: Cam Coleman showed the freak athlete that he can be down the field.
- 14:16[SPEAKER_00]: It wasn't a perfect outing by any stretch of the imagination.
- 14:19[SPEAKER_00]: And oh, you still have to face plenty of good wide outs running backs quarterbacks later on the year.
- 14:24[SPEAKER_00]: but this defense looks like they have has what it takes to at least put together a winning season after after at least what we saw at the cotton ball maybe they don't win every game maybe they only get to about seven wins but
- 14:37[SPEAKER_00]: from where we were just about a week ago, this, the outlook's so much better and that comes down to where this defense is, how we've seen them be able to respond to both victories and losses for the past couple of years.
- 14:50[SPEAKER_00]: And I think this defense has continued to get better and better underbrent, then it was that, they can bend a little bit in a game like they did against the long horns gave up those big plays to Wingo and Coleman.
- 15:01[SPEAKER_00]: But ultimately they turned it on, played their absolute best football 8 in the game.
- 15:05[SPEAKER_00]: Very few missed tackles, a guy like Owen Heineck, who's missed a lot this year, was really sharp in the second half, had one notable one against Hollywood's smut.
- 15:14[SPEAKER_00]: Hollywood's smothers, that was a game-changing kind of play I felt like.
- 15:18[SPEAKER_00]: So this deepens, I think what encourages me about them is they just,
- 15:23[SPEAKER_00]: Settle into games that are worst football is usually earlier in the games than it is later in the game, which I think sets them up well for responding to this win in the right way.
- 15:33[SPEAKER_02]: Yeah, Ryan, I think that the fate of the rest of the season is going to lie in the hands-up.
- 15:37[SPEAKER_02]: Was the offense able to find something and build confidence?
- 15:41[SPEAKER_02]: They could get a massive piece back here pretty soon.
- 15:44[SPEAKER_02]: Obviously, we've been monitoring Michael Fassucy, waiting and waiting and waiting,
- 15:51[SPEAKER_02]: will certainly find out a lot more information Wednesday night as you listen to this the first availability report of the week.
- 15:59[SPEAKER_02]: He's been doubtful on every single one of those initial availability reports and then obviously downgraded.
- 16:04[SPEAKER_02]: Brent Venibals does not often talk injuries.
- 16:07[SPEAKER_02]: He usually refers those availability reports but it was a positive update.
- 16:12[SPEAKER_02]: A head coach was also trying to be like, please don't yell at me if this doesn't come through this week.
- 16:15[SPEAKER_02]: I'm telling you it's getting better and better but
- 16:22[SPEAKER_03]: Yeah, no doubt about it.
- 16:23[SPEAKER_03]: And just the fact that he answered the question, I think is a positive development when you look at the possibilities of Michael Fassucci getting back and I think
- 16:34[SPEAKER_03]: Saturday was a step forward for this offensive line.
- 16:36[SPEAKER_03]: Not a big step forward.
- 16:39[SPEAKER_03]: A little bit of a step forward.
- 16:40[SPEAKER_03]: I thought that guard play was better on balance than it's been with ethosided and no a best.
- 16:46[SPEAKER_03]: I thought it's especially no a best played his best game to the season.
- 16:52[SPEAKER_03]: And the tackles, well not perfect, at least made a couple of plays each that you noticed, which is saying a lot given where this offense of line has been over the last few weeks.
- 17:07[SPEAKER_03]: I think it's really going to be interesting to see how everything shakes out once Michael Fassuzzi comes back.
- 17:12[SPEAKER_03]: where does Ryan Fogey fit in?
- 17:14[SPEAKER_03]: Does he slide back into one of those guard spots taking the place of either Besterosida or does he slide into the right tackle spot where a Mary on Harris has been and struggled for most of the year?
- 17:27[SPEAKER_03]: So I think you get Fassucy back in a lot,
- 17:32[SPEAKER_03]: uh... it can improve with that group it's not going to be perfect you know they're not going to be the uh... as i mentioned in the the story of road in the running game today they're not going to go back to twenty fourteen were samajie p-run was just run all over people but if you can run for you know even a hundred fifty yards a game that's a massive improvement over where they've been
- 17:54[SPEAKER_01]: I love how he put it to, I'm sorry Ryan, I love how he put it when he said he's just about ready like I've got it some brisket cooking in the other room.
- 18:03[SPEAKER_01]: It's just about ready.
- 18:05[SPEAKER_01]: Turkey, Turkey for things is just about ready.
- 18:08[SPEAKER_03]: Well, my, my reaction is just about ready for about eight weeks.
- 18:12[SPEAKER_03]: Yeah.
- 18:13[SPEAKER_02]: My take reaction was he's got another hurdle or two to clear.
- 18:15[SPEAKER_02]: I was like, why are the office?
- 18:16[SPEAKER_02]: Well, I'm doing hurdles, but that's what I'm an idiot.
- 18:18[SPEAKER_02]: Uh, it's, uh, we'll, we'll see, it seems like that hurdle is just going to be like the final full contact clearance.
- 18:24[SPEAKER_02]: Um, of course, I know that we've been down there, scoping out, looking at it.
- 18:28[SPEAKER_02]: You could tell noticeable difference from just like,
- 18:30[SPEAKER_02]: him merely walking around against Mexico to microvisu see trying to go through like his non-contact but his warm up in the inzone and Athens and then him actually striking a little bit and actually allowing like
- 18:46[SPEAKER_02]: Pads to touch his arm and his shoulder by extension against it.
- 18:50[SPEAKER_02]: It's one of the things that like he is clearly doing more and more each week in pre-game and it's not like a I'm not trying to pick on anybody but the Nick Anderson I remember that were like he would start to your little bit more and then it was just kind of like okay now He's just standing out there and and doing the hey they make the guy stress and hang out type thing It's certainly gotten more and more active as every pre-game has gone out of his past couple of weeks
- 19:13[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah, definitely has.
- 19:14[SPEAKER_00]: I mean, he's been present since the Michigan game, which was the first game that he missed.
- 19:19[SPEAKER_00]: He's been full pads out there, but like you said, he was participating in some of the walkthrough stuff before the Texas game, even though he was ruled out well before that game.
- 19:27[SPEAKER_00]: So that's obviously an encouraging sign.
- 19:30[SPEAKER_00]: And I mean,
- 19:31[SPEAKER_00]: It was always, this has always been a big issue since he suffered that injury, like they need him back this line, struggling, fissuces, a firestore talent, certainly showed a lot of that potential last year.
- 19:42[SPEAKER_00]: But I think some of the noise about, oh, this guy's quietly sitting out so he can transfer after the year, I've never gotten that vibe.
- 19:48[SPEAKER_00]: He's always been very active on the sidelines, whether the team's playing well, poorly and now,
- 19:54[SPEAKER_00]: seeing him go through walkthroughs before the game, hearing venibles say that he's very close to coming back.
- 20:00[SPEAKER_00]: That's got to be encouraging to sooner fans, curious to averse point the what the offensive line.
- 20:06[SPEAKER_00]: Oh, I admit, looks like when he does come back because there are more good things than we've seen in any of the first four games of the season against Texas, even guys that.
- 20:15[SPEAKER_00]: Struggled mightily against Georgia, Michigan, like Noah Best, like he Mario and Harris put together better, not great, maybe not even good, but better showings.
- 20:24[SPEAKER_00]: So that's going to need something some figuring out from the coaching staff, but anytime you can get a guy like Michael Fassousey back, that's obviously a huge lift.
- 20:34[SPEAKER_02]: a piece of that tool just be if the running backs to get going John I think that there's two things that play here first off.
- 20:41[SPEAKER_02]: We'll be saw by whether it be by Xavier Robinson listed as out on the report a week ago and then the fact that Tory play luck got banged up midway through
- 20:51[SPEAKER_02]: the contest there in Dallas, you basically will do yourself down to whether you liked it or not, it was Lloyd Avant and Jonathan Patton Jr. and two guys that you could try to get into a little bit of rhythm and while none of those guys are so much a PR and as you said, right?
- 21:04[SPEAKER_02]: If they'd like to turn into so much a PR and they'd take it.
- 21:06[SPEAKER_02]: Bye.
- 21:07[SPEAKER_02]: It's a spot where I think that the running game might find a little bit more rhythm on one hand just because it's like you got two guys You're probably working with at least until Tory Black it's cleared, but then John the the other bit of it and something that you know Barry Tramel asked both Ben Arbuckle and Brent Venables about
- 21:22[SPEAKER_02]: Expectedly neither coach really bit on this because it could be the perceived disrespect toward your opponent, but the fact of the matter is Open was played Michigan, they've played Georgia, they've played Texas, three of the best defenses in the country.
- 21:37[SPEAKER_02]: They've also played
- 21:47[SPEAKER_02]: good, good unit there, not that anyone left on the schedule is a bad defense by any means, but when you're looking at just like total defense rankings, the next one is Missouri currently in the 40s, A&M, just a little bit behind that, and then you kind of ticked down, down, down, down, down from there, as opposed to a bunch of top 15 units of three of the first four, four, the first five, excuse me, games, not including YouTube, sorry to the miners, but it's a
- 22:14[SPEAKER_02]: Maybe this thing can meet in the middle somewhere, right, John of the defenses come down a little bit.
- 22:20[SPEAKER_02]: Oklahoma's offense comes up a little bit and you get to a serviceable passable spot as long as you're not turned the ball over like crazy.
- 22:27[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, we saw last week.
- 22:30[SPEAKER_01]: To me, 51 nothing against you, tap, right?
- 22:34[SPEAKER_01]: To open the season.
- 22:36[SPEAKER_01]: we saw the best of offense by far of any stretch in any game last week against Texas since my easily since the U-Tip game, maybe even consider the opponent maybe since last year sometime.
- 22:48[SPEAKER_01]: That was impressive.
- 22:50[SPEAKER_01]: Whatever they did in that off season, whatever they said at halftime, the whole thing, you know, about turning it around and let's get it going offensive line, you can do it and come on running back, you've got whatever was said, whatever was coached,
- 23:03[SPEAKER_01]: need to try to bottle that because it worked well against Texas.
- 23:08[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, you're right.
- 23:09[SPEAKER_01]: I don't think.
- 23:10[SPEAKER_01]: Anybody on the rest of the schedule here, we're going to just run down a real quick, Kentucky at Mississippi State, South Carolina at Florida, Ole Miss, Texas A&M at at Missouri.
- 23:20[SPEAKER_01]: I think the only teams that could be considered on that level, Ole Miss, maybe Missouri, maybe, and then maybe at Florida, if they're swinging the clubs while that day, you know, because they have been all, all those teams have been like this, except for
- 23:38[SPEAKER_01]: less of a roller coaster, but yes, that's the SEC nowadays.
- 23:41[SPEAKER_01]: You see scores in your lightweight mid.
- 23:43[SPEAKER_01]: And that team just beat the crap out of that team?
- 23:45[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, well, how did that team beat the crap out of that team?
- 23:47[SPEAKER_01]: No idea, because it's the SEC in 2026.
- 23:50[SPEAKER_01]: So to me, everything's on the table.
- 23:52[SPEAKER_01]: You've got two losses, if you're OU, you've got two losses.
- 23:55[SPEAKER_01]: You don't have six, right?
- 23:57[SPEAKER_01]: You don't have nine, like some of us were saying, oh my god, this is gonna be an online loss season.
- 24:02[SPEAKER_01]: you've got two losses moving forward.
- 24:04[SPEAKER_01]: What are you going to do with them?
- 24:06[SPEAKER_01]: And I think this league is getable this year.
- 24:07[SPEAKER_01]: The rest of this schedule, as we've said, I mean, who knows how a team's going to play on a given day.
- 24:12[SPEAKER_01]: We've seen that from week to week.
- 24:14[SPEAKER_01]: But I think the rest of this schedule is very, very getable.
- 24:16[SPEAKER_01]: If they go 10 and 2 with this schedule, with this especially friend loaded like that, we'd look at it and play off, maybe, probably possibly.
- 24:25[SPEAKER_02]: a long way from that got to go week by week as well, especially with geometry at the helm as uneven as it gets, but we don't see you know, many people just rolled their eyes, this was a playoff, are you talking to playoff?
- 24:39[SPEAKER_02]: I rolled by eyes at Ryan Ryan, they can get there, they did it a year ago, but mathematically, red no people were jumping up.
- 24:46[SPEAKER_02]: It's the same.
- 24:46[SPEAKER_02]: It's the same.
- 24:47[SPEAKER_02]: There's a chance.
- 24:49[SPEAKER_02]: They've just going to take the last year's run and double it because it's just a longer run.
- 24:53[SPEAKER_02]: It's a long way to go.
- 24:55[SPEAKER_02]: As we've seen Carson, like teams can seize momentum, can tuck you to one of those teams that is writing high, that the way of momentum, it's got to be the time for John material to find that momentum.
- 25:03[SPEAKER_02]: Right.
- 25:03[SPEAKER_02]: Those two passes right at the end.
- 25:06[SPEAKER_02]: Especially because teams you go back ahead of that.
- 25:10[SPEAKER_02]: the throw that kind of hit off Colin Simmons elbow to Satanin that could have been like the that's the killer he's not able to complete it and then you see on the replay okay well our man goes stuff like that but he did rock it off of someone's elbow so you can see that like but the they did every day to him those last two drives and if you get a little bit more running game so job materials not doing everything is this the moment where it starts to click in and we just see a geometry that's not second guessing himself over and over again like we saw so much
- 25:41[SPEAKER_00]: I think it really comes down to just not playing hero ball or trying to play hero ball, because I mean, as turnover free, he was clean against Texas, didn't make the back-breaking mistakes, but he was close a couple of times, like you said that throw behind Satania, obviously coughing up the football on the first drivo, you very lucky to get that one back, heck of a play by Ryan Fogey to snatch that away from Colin Simmons.
- 26:04[SPEAKER_00]: He just needs to be another version of just kind of, I know it's a label quarterback.
- 26:07[SPEAKER_00]: So don't want to get, but a game manager kind of quarterback.
- 26:11[SPEAKER_00]: This guy's not going to win the high as men.
- 26:13[SPEAKER_00]: We've seen the lows and what they can be.
- 26:15[SPEAKER_00]: I think this version of John material.
- 26:17[SPEAKER_00]: He's not going to be this superstar quarterback that Oh, he was kind of accustomed to having between Baker Mayfield, Kyla Murray.
- 26:24[SPEAKER_00]: even really good quarterbacks like Dylan Gabriel.
- 26:26[SPEAKER_00]: So I mean he's probably not even going to be that.
- 26:29[SPEAKER_00]: He just needs to avoid the backbreaking mistakes.
- 26:32[SPEAKER_00]: You guys were right.
- 26:33[SPEAKER_00]: The defense is going forward.
- 26:34[SPEAKER_00]: Aren't quite as good as Georgia, Texas, Michigan, all nine of the remaining or all
- 26:40[SPEAKER_00]: Excuse me, seven of the remaining defenses have some really dang good athletes defensive backs, linebackers, so it's not easy by any stretch of the imagination either, couple that with John Matiers in consistency, he still needs to avoid the hero ball trying to do too much, obviously like you said Ryan, getting the run game more comfortable, more involved,
- 27:00[SPEAKER_00]: Even just more comfortable getting those second and two second and threes, which they were able to do more efficiently against Texas.
- 27:07[SPEAKER_00]: I think that's big, so he doesn't need to turn it into this Heisman Candidate Superstar.
- 27:12[SPEAKER_00]: He just needs to be able to manage these games, but the run game make plays, that is receivers make plays, obviously let the defense and special teams make plays.
- 27:20[SPEAKER_00]: And I think this team can really build off that and individually material can, too.
- 27:25[SPEAKER_02]: It's an entry spot to Ryan just because as much as we just talked about special teams, we'll get to you talk about special teams to rest of the year.
- 27:32[SPEAKER_02]: This could be a game where the complimentary football is a little bit more direct between the offense and the defense and it's because of what Kentucky likes to do.
- 27:41[SPEAKER_02]: You're seeing Will Stein, the first year head coach and
- 27:45[SPEAKER_02]: deservedly so that the two point conversion attempts and the aggressive nature on that side of things is kind of caught the headlines for Kentucky and when you walk off the South Carolina and LSU wins that way, you're going to get there, but it's something else that you look at, this Kentucky team heading into this week of college football, they were tied for fifth nationally in just going for it on fourth down, attempted fourth down conversions and
- 28:09[SPEAKER_02]: It's something that while it's not new to college football, it's not new to football in general in the analytics world and things like that.
- 28:16[SPEAKER_02]: It does create some interesting opportunities for maybe some shorter fields for the Oklahoma offensive.
- 28:22[SPEAKER_02]: Britvittables, defense can go out there and execute and the way that they've played thus far this season.
- 28:28[SPEAKER_02]: While Kentucky may have some success in those moments, I think that we would all be stunned if it's a situation where there's like,
- 28:35[SPEAKER_02]: four moments and Kentucky goes three for four on four downs or something like like I think Oklahoma's gonna get a handful of short fields, ball it midfield, things like that where as we saw when Oklahoma's defense was able to give them field position or especially they were really good at kind of caching on those chances against Texas.
- 28:53[SPEAKER_03]: Yeah, it's going to be fascinating to see the way that Willstein approaches this, does that thinking change at all with what Oklahoma's defense has been?
- 29:02[SPEAKER_03]: It doesn't seem like that's the kind of person that Willstein is.
- 29:05[SPEAKER_03]: He likes to be who he is and roll up there and take his chances.
- 29:11[SPEAKER_03]: But yeah, if Oklahoma can get a stopper to there and Britain, the animals talked about the challenges of that,
- 29:17[SPEAKER_03]: because it changes your third-down thinking.
- 29:19[SPEAKER_03]: If you're well-stined calling the plays offensively, and it changes your third-down thinking, if your Brent Vittables and OU and how you defend that, when teams can be in 4-down territory all over the field.
- 29:33[SPEAKER_03]: But,
- 29:34[SPEAKER_03]: As we saw on Saturday, you know, if you give your offense a short field position, there's a much greater chance that they can take advantage of that, especially when you've got a kicker like Tate Sandell, if you don't move the ball very much, you've still got a chance to at least convert it into points, but we saw on Saturday,
- 29:52[SPEAKER_03]: Certainly, the drive that ended in the Lloydovont touched down run specifically, you know, they were able to take advantage of that and, you know, really sort of roll that into the result.
- 30:07[SPEAKER_03]: So it's going to be really interesting to see that match up and if OU is able to come to up with some fourth down stops and what that does for the offense, depending on where they are on the field.
- 30:19[SPEAKER_02]: can't wait to break down the OU defense against Kentucky's offense.
- 30:23[SPEAKER_02]: It's one of the, I think, premiere matchups right now.
- 30:25[SPEAKER_02]: The way that Kentucky offense is coming.
- 30:26[SPEAKER_02]: But first, I want to tell you about our good friends over at Kessler Dental.
- 30:30[SPEAKER_02]: You wouldn't send your starting line up onto the field without taking care of them.
- 30:34[SPEAKER_02]: Your teeth deserve
- 30:35[SPEAKER_02]: the same treatment, Kessler General provides comprehensive dental care for the whole family, right here in East Edmund after a weekend full of football, wing, sodas and game day snacks.
- 30:44[SPEAKER_02]: Your teeth might need a little attention too.
- 30:46[SPEAKER_02]: You can throw in some great fried food there after we're our trip to the state fair.
- 30:50[SPEAKER_02]: If you need that, go ahead and schedule your next pleading with Kessler Dental in East Edmund, the right of 535, incredibly easy to get to easy access, easy parking, all that fun stuff.
- 31:01[SPEAKER_02]: You might be tough enough.
- 31:02[SPEAKER_02]: to play through an injury, but don't try to play through a toothache if something doesn't feel right.
- 31:07[SPEAKER_02]: Call Kessler Dinnom in East Edmund, John.
- 31:11[SPEAKER_02]: It's something that Brit Vittables was quick to talk about on Sunday in the moment where he was turning the page and looking at Kentucky.
- 31:18[SPEAKER_02]: He talked about it Monday night on his coach's show.
- 31:21[SPEAKER_02]: He was still in the franchise.
- 31:22[SPEAKER_02]: He talked about it Tuesday with us.
- 31:25[SPEAKER_02]: He has a ton of respect and a ton of praise for this Kentucky offensive line.
- 31:30[SPEAKER_02]: It's a unit that Kentucky put together through the portal by going and plucking players from big-time programs who have played Power 4 Football, who are veterans who have played Power 4 Football, and he was like, look, this is me talking now, not Brent Vennel's is me paraphrasing Britt Vennel's Britt.
- 31:47[SPEAKER_02]: I know that I tell you that every team is good even when the ones that are.
- 31:50[SPEAKER_02]: He said nice things about UTEP, but he's like, this is Britt Vennel's talking now.
- 31:54[SPEAKER_02]: How did I want the team to get the attention I showed the clips of the Kentucky offensive line to the entire team in the meeting on Monday?
- 32:02[SPEAKER_02]: Basically like you think that I say they're good.
- 32:05[SPEAKER_02]: Well, you guys evaluate it.
- 32:06[SPEAKER_02]: Put those clips up on the board.
- 32:08[SPEAKER_02]: It's going to be a really, really, really fun matchup for just an entire Kentucky offense that is really pieced together with a
- 32:16[SPEAKER_02]: It kind of mirrors what Will Stein's program has become.
- 32:18[SPEAKER_02]: Right, Chad, they were aggressive in the portal.
- 32:20[SPEAKER_02]: They went out and spent some money.
- 32:21[SPEAKER_02]: They went out and got some experience.
- 32:23[SPEAKER_02]: And it's been a really, really strong unit so far for the Wildcats.
- 32:26[SPEAKER_01]: building an offensive line through the transfer portal a dangerous game as Oklahoma has found out over the years Brent referenced that several times this season already.
- 32:34[SPEAKER_01]: But yeah, you're right, man.
- 32:35[SPEAKER_01]: The Wildcast did it.
- 32:37[SPEAKER_01]: Will Stein has done it.
- 32:38[SPEAKER_01]: It would appear that those guys are the kind of the the heart and soul of that of that offense, which is of course the steam engine of the whole team.
- 32:47[SPEAKER_01]: But huge guys,
- 32:51[SPEAKER_01]: but also big, what was it?
- 32:52[SPEAKER_01]: 6, 6, 330 was their average height and weight.
- 32:55[SPEAKER_01]: You got that stand in front of you.
- 32:57[SPEAKER_01]: Even if you're, you know, David Stone and J.J. Jackson, and you're 6, 3, 6, 4, 300, 3, 0, 5.
- 33:03[SPEAKER_01]: You look over there and you see guys that outweigh you about 25, 30, 40 pounds.
- 33:07[SPEAKER_01]: That's when you know, okay, we'd better tighten up the chin strap.
- 33:10[SPEAKER_01]: One more buckle here, and then let's get ready to hit some.
- 33:14[SPEAKER_01]: Hit some knocks some skulls.
- 33:16[SPEAKER_01]: Cracks of skulls is, as the system principal would say.
- 33:20[SPEAKER_02]: It's what they're going to need to do here, and it's going to start with something that has been a strength of Oklahoma's here, certainly, these last couple of years, Carson.
- 33:27[SPEAKER_02]: You look at TJ Baxter, kind of one of the engines that makes this thing go at the backfield 87 carries for 484, that's a 5.6 average per carry, eight touchdowns.
- 33:40[SPEAKER_02]: I know it's been pointed out all across the board, across Texas, Twitter, which is
- 33:48[SPEAKER_02]: Uh, the, the, the opponent for Oklahoma makes it's way that, hey, they brought in Holly's feathers.
- 33:52[SPEAKER_02]: They brought in really brown.
- 33:53[SPEAKER_02]: Texas kind of here and there to run the ball and CJ Baxor is the engine that just keeps going.
- 33:58[SPEAKER_02]: Uh, it's going to be massive because, uh, men she has been super, super efficient.
- 34:03[SPEAKER_02]: Doesn't really turn the ball over.
- 34:05[SPEAKER_02]: It's 11 to one.
- 34:06[SPEAKER_02]: His touchdown interception ratio.
- 34:07[SPEAKER_02]: But,
- 34:08[SPEAKER_02]: in these games he's not yet been forced to do it all himself because Kentucky was able to find success on the ground against South Carolina, uh, certainly against LSU.
- 34:18[SPEAKER_02]: This could be one of the keys to to make him into you look a little bit different than what he's looked like so far this year car such as putting behind the chains over and over again.
- 34:26[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah, absolutely, Kentucky's running games good, but we've seen as you alluded to how good OU's defense is at stopping really good running backs to white Phillips from Georgia had a really solid game, so in a chance he bowins a couple weeks ago.
- 34:39[SPEAKER_00]: But overall, they've done a pretty good job, Bryce Underwood also had a good game, but Kenny mentioned he doesn't really offer that threat with his legs, or at least he has it yet, only 11 yards through the first six game.
- 34:49[SPEAKER_00]: So he's not your true dual threat, kind of quarterback.
- 34:52[SPEAKER_00]: So a lot of it is going to come down stopping CJ Baxter, Jason Patterson, old friend Javante Barnes, maybe makes a couple of appearances in there.
- 35:01[SPEAKER_00]: But they've run it well and a lot of that's a testament to how good their offensive lines been.
- 35:05[SPEAKER_00]: Texas has some really good backs with some others and brown, but their stats aren't great this year because the run blocking hasn't been amazing.
- 35:13[SPEAKER_00]: Kentucky's run blocking on the other hand has been really good against really good.
- 35:17[SPEAKER_00]: defensive lines like LSU, South Carolina and Texas A&M.
- 35:21[SPEAKER_00]: So they're going to see another good one and arguably better one from Oklahoma.
- 35:25[SPEAKER_00]: But there's nothing that says that Kentucky's not going to be able to break off at least some long runs.
- 35:30[SPEAKER_00]: But if they can contain that make ministry throw up, I think you're right.
- 35:33[SPEAKER_00]: That is probably the best path towards success, but they do have some weapons on the perimeter.
- 35:38[SPEAKER_00]: Primiter, freshman Kenny Darby's been out standing for before star guy,
- 35:43[SPEAKER_00]: Once was an LSU commit, then found his way at Kentucky.
- 35:46[SPEAKER_00]: They're tied in, Willie Rodriguez.
- 35:49[SPEAKER_00]: One of the best if not the best titans in this league.
- 35:51[SPEAKER_00]: So it's kind of weird that we're saying Kentucky's one of the more complete talented offences in this conference, but they really are.
- 35:58[SPEAKER_00]: And it's been pretty remarkable to see Will Steinwork is magic this quickly.
- 36:03[SPEAKER_02]: Yeah, it's a group that, um, Oklahoma does have a ton of familiarity with Kentucky Aper, three matchups ever.
- 36:07[SPEAKER_02]: The last one was a home in home in the 80s.
- 36:09[SPEAKER_02]: Obviously, not a lot translates and by not a lot, I mean, not a darn thing translates from any of that.
- 36:16[SPEAKER_02]: Uh, it was kind of adjacently.
- 36:19[SPEAKER_02]: connected but not really to Oklahoma for years via the conduit of markstoop so you had that go on but there even removed from there but the familiarity that does exist like it's bits and pieces Taylor wine talked about on Monday night that he faced off against Lance heard a year ago so that's like a heads-up matchup that they know Javante Barnes and the game just hit her bounced around they they popped up and have had
- 36:43[SPEAKER_02]: small moments here.
- 36:44[SPEAKER_02]: They're not like key cogs in this offense, but they're certainly players that would like to come back to Owen Field and have a really, really big day.
- 36:52[SPEAKER_02]: When you look at everything in this match at, like, what is the most important thing or the most important couple things that Oklahoma needs to do to make sure that they're putting the kind of stress on Kentucky.
- 37:02[SPEAKER_02]: They've not really felt so far this year.
- 37:05[SPEAKER_03]: Yeah, I think the biggest thing is find ways to create turnovers because Kentucky has been really good at limiting turnovers themselves offensively and also really good at forcing turnovers with their defense and their turnover margin is one of the best in the country.
- 37:22[SPEAKER_03]: I think they forced multiple turnovers in each of the last five games I believe it is so the.
- 37:29[SPEAKER_03]: the offense.
- 37:30[SPEAKER_03]: Oh, you offense has to limit turnovers.
- 37:32[SPEAKER_03]: We talked about that all year, but that defense really needs to keep creating some of the turnovers that we've seen them finally break through over the last couple weeks.
- 37:41[SPEAKER_03]: If they're able to do that, it becomes a lot easier, a lot more realistic to knock off this team and keep the momentum rolling.
- 37:50[SPEAKER_03]: But if you don't, you know, get some
- 37:57[SPEAKER_03]: of making you pay and making you pay pretty severely because they've got weapons as y'all have mentioned across the board and a pretty good offensive line to protect their quarterback and open up holes for that running game.
- 38:12[SPEAKER_02]: Seems to be like a much more comfortable swap for somebody offense to take on Kentucky this week, then maybe a couple weeks ago, didn't really think that the tackling issues that had persisted in the first half some of those early games had really popped up even against Georgia or certainly tackling against Georgia.
- 38:28[SPEAKER_02]: And certainly it's Texas.
- 38:29[SPEAKER_02]: I think it's Texas you saw.
- 38:32[SPEAKER_02]: I think that second drive, the first try to choose me the second half, is a spot that Oklahoma's probably going to need to replicate and John at something that we had talked about going into the game is.
- 38:43[SPEAKER_02]: What is the big play?
- 38:45[SPEAKER_02]: Is it a 41-yard or a 42-yard completion to Cam Coleman for a touchdown?
- 38:50[SPEAKER_02]: Is it a 35-ish yard pass to Ryan?
- 38:53[SPEAKER_02]: That's what we saw in the first half, right?
- 38:54[SPEAKER_02]: Did the big plays were touchdowns for Texas?
- 38:57[SPEAKER_02]: Or is it you come out?
- 38:58[SPEAKER_02]: You start off the second half Wingo has the tight rope down the sideline for 21 yards, and then immediately the next three plays, Texas is sitting out the punk team, because Oklahoma's deepens is able to rally.
- 39:09[SPEAKER_02]: I think that's even more important.
- 39:11[SPEAKER_02]: this Saturday because even if Kentucky gets that play on a deep into their side of the field or anything like that, it's going to be a, hey, if they're set up near the 50 yard line and if they're set up in a third and five Kentucky might be like, we just need a couple yards here because we're going to be in Go mode, which is kind of what Stein and what we talked about John has been part of this Kentucky.
- 39:31[SPEAKER_02]: I didn't think that's gotten them here to be in a one last team role to Norman.
- 39:35[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, and I think Brett has established that even his best defenses, you know, like last year, certainly this one's gotten off to a good start, but his best defenses are going to give up plays because he takes risks with blitzes and he takes risks with hiding coverage, and things like that, trying to confuse a quarterback.
- 39:53[SPEAKER_01]: And if a quarterback can get up to the line of scrimmage and see what's going on, understand, comprehend, and then react to it.
- 40:01[SPEAKER_01]: There are going to be vulnerabilities in the defense, and that's I think a little bit of what we've seen so far this year where the defense itself as a whole is working great But also there's a like you said a crack 42 yard touchdown or you know, I mean we saw
- 40:15[SPEAKER_01]: shoot Michigan hit a couple of plays and Michigan's offense has just been, you know, right right behind Oklahoma is just in terms of not being able to move the football consistently, but they could get a big, a couple of big plays here and there.
- 40:29[SPEAKER_01]: But yeah, that's that's something that I think is is, oh, you fans, venibles, the assistant coaches, the players, people are just going to have to live with the idea that this is a, it's not a high risk, high reward, there's
- 40:44[SPEAKER_01]: But it's there's going to be rewards for the for the Kentucky offense, especially a Kentucky offense that we've seen can move the football like this one.
- 40:52[SPEAKER_02]: Yeah, it's something that's helped here.
- 40:54[SPEAKER_02]: I think along the way is as you've seen some bumps and bruises kind of take over, feels like that depth that Brent Vennables talked about so much developing all last season.
- 41:03[SPEAKER_02]: It's kind of getting there a little bit, of course, there was the big play right at the end of the first quarter, it was shrimp Wilson, who's able to come up with the big sack and a couple plays later, Tara Wein gets his big sack tack for loss and then suddenly that's when Golden Hat and the punk block is on.
- 41:17[SPEAKER_02]: Tristan Haynes, a guy that we talked about a ton on the post game pod on Saturday, just stepping up and plugging a hole for Eli Bowen.
- 41:25[SPEAKER_02]: If those guys can manage like Eli Bowen can get back and like we said, we'll see you on the availability report on Wednesday evening and certainly throughout the rest of the week.
- 41:34[SPEAKER_02]: It's a spot where
- 41:36[SPEAKER_02]: How great does Lamar Morgan have to feel about?
- 41:38[SPEAKER_02]: Oh, hey, Eli Bowen might be back, but with that ankle, which was taped like a cast almost.
- 41:44[SPEAKER_02]: It's one of the biggest tape jobs I think, Avery, I have ever seen for a guy that was just a spray in type situation or just a rolled ankle, but it's a spot where...
- 41:54[SPEAKER_02]: That depth is coming along, which is what you need at this time of the year as the grind of the schedule takes over to continue to be able to respond as opposed to the one big play leads to five big plays and then it's a disaster, anything like that.
- 42:08[SPEAKER_00]: Without a doubt, and you're getting it from all three phases of the defense to you mentioned Trent Wilson.
- 42:13[SPEAKER_00]: I feel like he's been really good backing up David Stone and Jayden Jackson all season.
- 42:17[SPEAKER_00]: Obviously, he had that really big sack on Archmany.
- 42:20[SPEAKER_00]: Early in the game, right before the end of the first quarter, that was a big play, Jake Crel only a freshman.
- 42:25[SPEAKER_00]: He looks really solid on his limited snaps.
- 42:28[SPEAKER_00]: He doesn't need to be an ever-down kind of guy.
- 42:30[SPEAKER_00]: They have PJ, they have Taylor Wine, they have Daniel Koye.
- 42:34[SPEAKER_00]: So it's not his time to be a starter, but he looks like he is going to be the real deal once he does.
- 42:39[SPEAKER_00]: Eventually get that role, he's been great.
- 42:41[SPEAKER_00]: You mentioned Tristan Hayne certainly some moments that he'd want back from the game against Texas, but there are moments that every, I think every player on a used defense would like back from that game and that happens when you're playing guys as talented as Cam Coleman, Ryan Wingo, Relic Brown, whoever it may be on that offense.
- 42:59[SPEAKER_00]: Um, had some huge tackles, Tristan Haynes data late in that game, really good at stopping the run.
- 43:04[SPEAKER_00]: I felt like, so just people stepping up all over the place is huge for this Uber town to defense that has great starting line up, has the pieces you want on the top of the depth chart, getting more guys is going to help tremendously, James Nesta, certainly kind of a raw product at this point, but he made some big plays against Texas, did
- 43:27[SPEAKER_00]: Venables mentioned Danny Sili who knows how much of a role he's gonna play but maybe he gets a little more involved now that he's been on campus a little longer So sounds like Brent's really confident in the group that he has behind the starters and I mean just from what we've seen I think I don't think he's off bass for thinking that
- 43:46[SPEAKER_02]: Yeah, so it's certainly been rewarded both in just like snaps and playing time, but also production as well.
- 43:52[SPEAKER_02]: There is we step back and take the 10,000 foot view at this thing Ryan.
- 43:57[SPEAKER_02]: It feels like, you know, obviously, we've talked about it's week to week.
- 44:01[SPEAKER_02]: It seems that, you know, it's breaking animals.
- 44:03[SPEAKER_02]: All he said two years ago going to the SEC is it's a one possession week, it's the week to week league.
- 44:07[SPEAKER_02]: I think all we've seen is that that is rolling through.
- 44:10[SPEAKER_02]: When you look at it,
- 44:12[SPEAKER_02]: What is I think you go back to the rushing game for Oklahoma?
- 44:16[SPEAKER_02]: Is there a number that you're like, they need to hit this?
- 44:18[SPEAKER_02]: I don't think it's anything crazy.
- 44:20[SPEAKER_02]: 300 yards.
- 44:21[SPEAKER_02]: I think we'd all be a Gast and probably wondering what happened.
- 44:24[SPEAKER_02]: And I might get to like a shelter.
- 44:26[SPEAKER_02]: It's like, is everything okay out there, but it's a spot of
- 44:30[SPEAKER_02]: Is it just 150 that puts you as like a bang average rushing attack and it would be just 20 ish or so yards more than what Kentucky gets 15 if I could do my math there.
- 44:39[SPEAKER_02]: Give it up 135 rushing yards a game that that would put you in a spot that that feels like a realistic but also firmly in that it doesn't have to be perfect but a middle throat offense is all you need.
- 44:52[SPEAKER_03]: Yeah, I think that's exactly the number I was thinking of.
- 44:55[SPEAKER_03]: And yes, for what Kentucky's given up, it's not that much difference.
- 45:00[SPEAKER_03]: But heck, if you can do that, that's a big improvement for Oklahoma, who has had three consecutive sub-100 yard rushing games for the first time in more than 20 years.
- 45:17[SPEAKER_03]: If they can do that with the defense that they have, and avoid the turnovers the same thing that we've been talking about all game, then you can really start to feel good about some things.
- 45:27[SPEAKER_03]: I think obviously, Ben Arbuckle, I had some really good things to say about Lloyd Avant and not only the numbers that he was putting up, especially in the set well, in the second half, but also the way he was running the football, and if they're able to run for 150
- 45:45[SPEAKER_03]: that is a big, big improvement for Oklahoma and I think that will give them an excellent chance to win this football game.
- 45:54[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, so Oklahoma running for 150 yards seems a little bit ambitious to me, you guys.
- 46:00[SPEAKER_01]: talking about somebody who's under a hundred from three straight.
- 46:04[SPEAKER_01]: Look at the defenses that they did it against pretty good defenses.
- 46:08[SPEAKER_01]: I completely admit, Kentucky's run defense right now is averaging allowing 144 yards again.
- 46:15[SPEAKER_01]: 150 that would be, I think that would be an easy win if I'll come a rush for 150 yards.
- 46:19[SPEAKER_01]: I think that would be a dominating win.
- 46:21[SPEAKER_01]: If they could rush for 120, I think that would go a long, long way toward a comfortable victory.
- 46:27[SPEAKER_01]: If they get to a hundred,
- 46:29[SPEAKER_01]: If this team gets to 100 on the ground, they only have 86, I think, net yards against Texas.
- 46:34[SPEAKER_01]: If they get to 100, I think that's a, that's a number to shoot for.
- 46:37[SPEAKER_01]: Seriously, that's how bad this running game has been.
- 46:40[SPEAKER_01]: You get to 100 yards.
- 46:41[SPEAKER_01]: It means you're moving the change.
- 46:42[SPEAKER_01]: You're getting first down.
- 46:43[SPEAKER_01]: You're converting third down as you're keeping the football away from Kentucky a little bit.
- 46:48[SPEAKER_01]: You know, maybe you're not dominating possession, but you're keeping it away from them.
- 46:51[SPEAKER_01]: I think that goes a long way for this defense.
- 46:54[SPEAKER_02]: I think I've kind of started in a weird way and maybe it's not maybe it's because the offense has been stuck in the mud is I've started counting drives as opposed to rush cars and things like that and let's take the two minute drill and kind of put it off to the side row quick because it was you know two plays well executed but two plays they put together
- 47:13[SPEAKER_02]: four pretty good drives.
- 47:14[SPEAKER_02]: I would say Corson, one of them ended up in an MS field, but if they get to five or six drives, you just move the chains a little bit, position your defense, certainly put some points on the board.
- 47:25[SPEAKER_02]: Then I think that as you start counting drives, and that's kind of like the spot that this group is probably in confidence-wise as far as like having to build on that.
- 47:34[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah, I think holding on to the ball in sustaining drives is huge for just the availability of the defense the rest.
- 47:42[SPEAKER_00]: But again, the defense getting some rest.
- 47:44[SPEAKER_00]: We've seen that I think with some of the breakdowns this defense has had.
- 47:48[SPEAKER_00]: It seems like a lot of the times they've been a little bit gasped because the offense hasn't been able to sustain anything.
- 47:53[SPEAKER_00]: So if they can do that, like they did after.
- 47:56[SPEAKER_00]: After that long drive that they missed the field goal, they put together like you said, some really good drives, kept the defense off the field for a little bit, so they could play their best football later in the game.
- 48:07[SPEAKER_00]: I think that's a key when playing a team right Kentucky, because we've seen how quickly this Kentucky offense can move down the field.
- 48:13[SPEAKER_00]: So the run game simply being decent, the offensive line simply playing decent football, material avoiding the turnovers.
- 48:20[SPEAKER_00]: That's your way to at least move it.
- 48:22[SPEAKER_00]: move the chains a few times, turn this into a lower scoring kind of game.
- 48:26[SPEAKER_00]: I don't think any sooner fans would be upset about winning 13 to 10, a 16 to 13, whatever it might be.
- 48:32[SPEAKER_00]: It doesn't have to be pretty.
- 48:34[SPEAKER_00]: This would, any way they could get it.
- 48:36[SPEAKER_00]: This would be an impressive win for a team that we were talking about worst case scenarios a couple weeks ago.
- 48:41[SPEAKER_00]: Now we're like, okay, this team might have a legitimate chance against a ranked opponent.
- 48:46[SPEAKER_00]: Any way you could get it would be a big win for the Seniors.
- 48:50[SPEAKER_02]: Can I offer a, or can I roll out some hopeiam for everyone as we progress through?
- 48:56[SPEAKER_02]: I know that that is not my M.O.
- 48:58[SPEAKER_02]: Johnny worked for me for a, with we for a very long time.
- 49:01[SPEAKER_02]: You know, the teams that I love off, like with Chelsea.
- 49:05[SPEAKER_02]: It's like it's never hopeiam.
- 49:06[SPEAKER_02]: It's always doom and gloom.
- 49:08[SPEAKER_02]: As I pull up these SEC standings here today and look down, I do think that there is an interesting thing.
- 49:14[SPEAKER_02]: to be pointed out.
- 49:16[SPEAKER_02]: Georgia's leading the pack there at 4-0, Oklahoma has already played Georgia.
- 49:20[SPEAKER_02]: Obviously, we were all watching that or there, but an important thing that Georgia did was hang a loss on Alabama.
- 49:27[SPEAKER_02]: You would expect and you would hope for Georgia to potentially pull away from the rest of the SEC, at least in the
- 49:34[SPEAKER_02]: regular season conference standings as they try to look to head back to Atlanta.
- 49:38[SPEAKER_02]: They're home away from home, just a short trip over from Athens.
- 49:42[SPEAKER_02]: Here's the group of one lost teams.
- 49:44[SPEAKER_02]: And let me see if you guys can put your finger on something that is a three line for most of these teams.
- 49:50[SPEAKER_02]: Not all of them.
- 49:51[SPEAKER_02]: Alabama sitting at three in one in conference play this Kentucky team that's coming to Norman three in one in conference play Mississippi State coming off a buy there two in one in conference play we'll see far out Taylor's able to play there's some stuff about him maybe not be able to go down and back.
- 50:05[SPEAKER_02]: We're just speaking Mazoo two in one here in conference play Tennessee two in one in conference play Ole Miss two in one in conference play and the sooners at one in one then you've got Texas the other one last team down there at one in one
- 50:20[SPEAKER_02]: Kentucky, Mississippi State, Missouri, Ole Miss, those are like teams that we're going to see up close to the impersonal with the suitors.
- 50:29[SPEAKER_02]: It's a spot where I know we said it, it's still seven games.
- 50:33[SPEAKER_02]: It's two months give or take like you got to take it one week at a time.
- 50:36[SPEAKER_02]: But if you're looking for some upward mobility in the conference standings, if you're looking to
- 50:42[SPEAKER_02]: pocket some tie breakers when it comes to head to head if you're trying to truly rally turning this thing all the way around and getting the mix for something spectacular and incredible turning around.
- 50:52[SPEAKER_02]: Ryan, the good news is you do directly play a bunch of these teams that are left starting with these Kentucky Wild Gats.
- 50:59[SPEAKER_03]: Yeah, there's certainly got a chance that they can turn it around and they've got to continue making improvements on the offensive side.
- 51:06[SPEAKER_03]: They've got to continue to build depth on the defensive side, the special teams, all of that, and continue to head in the right direction.
- 51:15[SPEAKER_03]: But as we've seen, obviously with the video you did last year and as we've seen, you know,
- 51:22[SPEAKER_03]: if you can you know turn the tide then you at least give yourself a shot and they've got that now.
- 51:29[SPEAKER_03]: Now it's on them to keep doing it.
- 51:31[SPEAKER_03]: They've got a lot of games that
- 51:35[SPEAKER_03]: Yeah, there's not a lot of games that you know completely write them off at the rest of season and with their defense it's hard to write them up period, but there are a lot of really tough games and you could see them losing pretty much all of them.
- 51:50[SPEAKER_03]: Well, all of them, you know, given the talent that they're going to face on the other side, those results that we've seen, but if you can string together some wins.
- 52:00[SPEAKER_03]: build confidence you get the good geometry or not the bad one then you know there's at least a chance to make this a much much better season then a lot of us thought possible you know even a week ago.
- 52:13[SPEAKER_02]: Saturday night, the suitants will be under the lights and as all of us know, it's quite a different vibe when they are going to get the welcome of conquering heroes coming back in from everything that went down in Dallas and John I do think this will be interesting thing that again, we won't know until Saturday and I think a couple could play well loose this game so I think that Kentucky has shown that they are one of those teams that didn't it's currently in that middle class in the SEC of
- 52:38[SPEAKER_02]: At least for this season of they could go out there and win or lose kind of any given week to basically everyone but maybe Georgia or Arkansas punching up and punching down, but when you look at it is it does feel like I don't know coming off this Texas game it's a different vibe just because I think the offense.
- 52:53[SPEAKER_02]: merely going out there and winning that game on Saturday does not wash away the month of them being like very like honest and hand up of like yeah this has been bad the offices been bad we need to be much better and we need to make great improvements even the nature of how they beat Texas like I think you saw it with Ben Arbuckle on Tuesday he was still a little bit more stern than what he's been and certainly a year ago and and kind of maybe the juiced up Ben Arbuckle from you know week one or week two or things like that
- 53:22[SPEAKER_02]: As they handle success, they are taking a very realistic approach of, I don't think the coaches have to say much to be like, we still have to improve a lot on Monday and Tuesday Wednesday at practice.
- 53:32[SPEAKER_02]: I don't think this is a team that's going to be like running from that reality.
- 53:36[SPEAKER_01]: Now you're right, there's plenty of evidence on film even even if you just take those two get the Texas game and split it into two halves.
- 53:46[SPEAKER_01]: You got Oklahoma 69 rushing yards, I think
- 53:52[SPEAKER_01]: One rushing art in the first half.
- 53:55[SPEAKER_01]: We would know that and finished with the 86.
- 53:58[SPEAKER_01]: I think so just the simple fact that they were able to say something in locker room Recognize what's going on on a Texas defensive scheme find a whole find a and you know give it up to Lloyd Avant 42 yards on the one of his 72 came on one carry so But like said that's hasn't happened in the first four games
- 54:22[SPEAKER_01]: for six yards and eight yards on consecutive carries or whatever it was, hadn't happened in the first four games.
- 54:28[SPEAKER_01]: Been our buckle, there was a moment in that game in the third quarter where avant rushed for six yards and maybe eight yards and my wife said she said they're watching the game with me and she said
- 54:43[SPEAKER_01]: He that kind of needs to make people miss.
- 54:45[SPEAKER_01]: He just needs to make a move or something and I said it's probably not going to matter because after an eight yard run they're going to try and throw a pass.
- 54:53[SPEAKER_01]: And they did and I just want to see I mean that's and what happened on the past that I think they got to first down picked it up easy, but I was like.
- 55:02[SPEAKER_01]: It's it's easy to diagnose what this team this offense is going to do been our book is getting a little predictable.
- 55:07[SPEAKER_01]: And then the next like three times that situation came up he ran it again he ran it back to back and I was just like Mind blown he got he got me that time and you know who else he got he got the Texas defense so
- 55:21[SPEAKER_02]: It will be a ton of fun and it's going to be the Texas game was a crossroads right now.
- 55:27[SPEAKER_02]: It feels like this Kentucky game I feel dumb for being like that was a crossroads last week and now they're back at it again, but it's a little bit different, but it's all that positive momentum and goodwill can wash away if you don't come out and play well on Saturday night and they've got the number 15 ranked wildcats coming on and be sure you're headed to
- 55:48[SPEAKER_02]: tons and tons in tons of stories uh... courses taken full advantage of the rain washing out the golf he's got a ton of content up as well as a mary brady myself who have everybody over the suitors on a side dot com that's the place to be totally free all the time just great content flowing and flowing and flowing
- 56:06[SPEAKER_02]: If you want to check back to anything that was set on Tuesday at the press conferences or Monday night with the players, head to Hoos YouTube page John Hoover media.
- 56:15[SPEAKER_02]: That's where our post game wrap will be the post game pod.
- 56:18[SPEAKER_02]: All that fun stuff.
- 56:18[SPEAKER_02]: And for the podcast here, we will check back in with you on Saturday night.
- 56:23[SPEAKER_02]: Well, really Sunday morning.
- 56:25[SPEAKER_02]: early in the morning following the sooners in the wild cats of the be myself, Carson Abror and of course Brady will be in for the post game pod, but we will leave it there.
- 56:34[SPEAKER_02]: We'll see all of you at 6.30 on Saturday night and deep into the morning after that.
