- 0:10Podcast I' ll leave the links in the description and comments. We just
- 0:16started. My name is Jacinto. I am currently eighty years old and I
- 0:24think that at my age I have lived from everything and there are few things
- 0:28I have not heard or seen, but among all the stories I have to
- 0:33tell there was one in particular that causes me nightmares to this day. It
- 0:36is something that not only relates a paranormal case, but as far as human
- 0:41evil can go. It all started when I was about thirty- five years
- 0:46old. At that time I felt trapped in the social expectations that dictated that
- 0:52at my age I should have a home, my own, wife and children.
- 0:56However, my reality was completely different. Labour and economic instability forced me
- 1:03to live in rented rooms, far from complying with established standards. In spite
- 1:10of external pressures, what I was really passionate about was technology. From a
- 1:17young age, he enjoyed disarming mechanical things to find out how they worked.
- 1:21I had read numerous books about radios and music players of the time, but
- 1:26what captivated me the most was television. I couldn' t understand how in
- 1:32a small box there were all those images and sounds that made up my window
- 1:37into the world. I remember clearly the day I found a tiny television in
- 1:42the dump, with effort and dedication, I managed to repair it and finally
- 1:47fulfilled my dream of having. My own TV was black and white. It
- 1:52included radio and, although modest, it was a treasure to me. However,
- 1:57the arrival of color TV to m IEl changed everything. That small television
- 2:02became a constant reminder that it possessed the most modest model in the market.
- 2:08My new goal was to get a color television, but the people who could
- 2:14afford that luxury belonged to a high economic status, something unattainable to me.
- 2:21At that time, technology was advancing rapidly and as my desire for a color
- 2:28television grew, my economic situation was not improving. Social pressures continued to increase,
- 2:35but my focus was on finding a way to acquire that longing object of
- 2:39desire. After a few years, my longing to possess the color television of
- 2:45my dreams had not yet come true. However, my life had taken a
- 2:51more positive turn. I had become better known in my neighborhood because of my
- 2:57work as a Albañil' s assistant. Although the days were heavy and long,
- 3:01I found satisfaction in following the line that society marked for the first time.
- 3:07The possibility of obtaining better stability was much closer and, in addition,
- 3:12it was acquiring skills in a trade that could be useful in the future.
- 3:17A particular project marked a point in my career as a Mason. The task
- 3:23was to build a small guest house in the garden of a wealthy person.
- 3:30This project required several months of hard work, but finally the construction was successfully
- 3:36completed. The person who owns the house, whom I will always remember as
- 3:42a genuinely kind individual, decided to celebrate the achievement with a generous meal for
- 3:47all workers. It was a tradition that gave us a well- deserved rest
- 3:53every time we finished a job of that magnitude. On the day of the
- 3:58farewell, when everything was getting in the truck to leave, I realized that
- 4:02I had forgotten my belongings inside the house. My keys were there and since
- 4:09we wouldn' t go back to that house, I had no choice but
- 4:13to go back. However, the hurry of the owner of the truck,
- 4:16who was supposed to pick up his children, made me tell them that they
- 4:21could leave without me while picking up my things, thanked the owner of the
- 4:27house again and started my way down the street to get out of the neighborhood.
- 4:31As I walked in my thoughts, my eyes met with a wonderful scene
- 4:36In a corner, a TV apparently in excellent condition was resting next to other
- 4:44garbage bags. Curiosity took over me when I realized it was a color TV.
- 4:51Without a doubt, my heart was beating with emotion as I imagined the
- 4:57possibilities of finally having such a device longing for the object seemed to have no
- 5:03visible problem. I examined it carefully after making sure there was no one around
- 5:10I decided to take it. As I lifted it, I noticed that,
- 5:15although it was considerably larger than any other TV that had seen its weight,
- 5:19it was larger than I imagined. I interpreted it as a sign of quality.
- 5:25The emotion of that finding initially made weight not a problem. Convinced that
- 5:30he had won the lottery that day and although I thought it would be easy
- 5:35to get home with that gigantic television set, it turned out to be an
- 5:41exhausting task that consumed many hours of extra effort. My body was completely exhausted
- 5:45by weight. I almost immediately connected it, but to my misfortune, it
- 5:50didn' t ignite. I had to fix it, but I had left
- 5:55my tools at my mom' s and I would have to go get them
- 5:59to tell the truth. It would be a twenty- minute road in the
- 6:02dark, not to mention how tired I was for taking the television there.
- 6:06I figured the device would still be there in the morning, so I went
- 6:12to sleep. As far as I remember, it was around eight o'
- 6:15clock at night, an hour before I used to sleep, but I was
- 6:19so tired that I fell asleep only minutes after bedtime. Something about me,
- 6:25at least up to that point, was that I didn' t believe in
- 6:30anything related to ghosts. If I had been asked about it at that time,
- 6:33I would tell you if I couldn' t see it, then I
- 6:38wouldn' t believe it. However, that night was different. I woke
- 6:43up suddenly without remembering what I had dreamed, although I could almost assure that
- 6:48it had been a nightmare. Given my reaction, I screamed in the dark
- 6:53and was also soaked in sweat. That was something that had never happened to
- 6:57me, not even as a child. At first I thought I might be
- 7:02sick, but then I just came to the idea that it had been a
- 7:06bad dream. However, that did not remove that suggestion from me because of
- 7:11the slightest noise I heard. While I was trying to get back to sleep,
- 7:16I looked at the time and it was almost midnight. I knew I
- 7:18should try to get some sleep, so even though I was still a little
- 7:24distressed, I closed my eyes and tried to go back to sleep. However,
- 7:28just as he was about to fall asleep, a strange sensation invaded the
- 7:32room. The cold took over the environment. I don' t know how
- 7:39to write it. It was as if the place was becoming a freezer,
- 7:43though by that time I was already falling asleep. I got lazy to get
- 7:48up for another blanket and all I did was cover myself from head to toe
- 7:54to try to ignore it, even though it was suddenly starting to work a
- 8:00succinct sound but in confusing broke the silence. It was like a heavy breath,
- 8:03but it sounded like the owner of the breath was right next to me.
- 8:09A chill ran all over my back and almost like a reflection, I
- 8:13popped out to see who it was. However, there was no one there
- 8:18and everything was very quiet. There wasn' t even a sound of insects.
- 8:22When I managed to calm down, I tried to downplay those strange sounds
- 8:28I had heard. After all, I lived in a small neighborhood and the
- 8:33noises of the neighbors often crossed the thin walls quickly attributed the breath to some
- 8:41sound of a neighbor and perhaps for being more asleep than awake. I had
- 8:46heard it closer than I really was. Despite my attempt to rule out the
- 8:52situation as one of those nights when sounds seem louder than they are, I
- 8:56realized that that breath was only heard when I was trying to go back to
- 9:01sleep. And not only that, but at one point not only did I
- 9:07hear it, but I felt clearly how the blanket passed over and hit me
- 9:11in the face right away. I opened my eyes and lit the light,
- 9:16but to my astonishment there was no one else in the room. I tried
- 9:22to calm down, repeating that what I was beginning to think could not be
- 9:26real and that it was the fault of fatigue and stress accumulated throughout the day.
- 9:31Convinced that everything could be the product of an exhausted mind, he decided
- 9:37to pay for the light again and close his eyes in the hope of getting
- 9:41a good sleep. However, my attempt to return to sleep was interrupted just
- 9:46a few minutes later, as a peculiar sound began to fill the room.
- 9:54Steps, but not just any of them were tiny steps, like kids running
- 9:58around. At first, I thought they came from outside, but as the
- 10:05minutes passed I realized that those steps were clearly heard inside my room. The
- 10:11panic took over me. I turned the light back on and though I expected
- 10:16to find a logical explanation. Once again, my room was empty and the
- 10:20steps were no longer heard. Not knowing who else to turn to or get
- 10:26to think of a logical explanation. Of all that, all I ever thought
- 10:30of doing was praying to try to calm me down. I think that night
- 10:35I said all the prayers I knew. After praying for about an hour without
- 10:41stopping, I managed to feel some tranquility, although the light still lit up
- 10:46the room and I didn' t dare turn it off, I decided it
- 10:50was time to try to sleep again, since by that time all I wanted
- 10:54was for that night to end even the idea of moving the next day and
- 11:01never coming back to that place crossed my mind this time the dream took hold
- 11:05of me in a different way. For the first time in what I was
- 11:09wearing that night, I remembered a dream. It was almost like watching a
- 11:13movie. I was on a street that was quite similar to the street where
- 11:18I had found the TV, only that the colors looked much more off.
- 11:24My steps led me to the sidewalk, where a little boy played carelessly with
- 11:30wooden carts and although the child was on his back, without even realizing my
- 11:35presence, he felt the need to draw his attention, to establish some kind
- 11:41of conversation with him. I remember as I walked, I tried to call
- 11:46him to turn, but my calls seemed to fall on deaf ears, for
- 11:52the child did not turn or show signs of realizing my presence. Determined to
- 11:56get your attention. I extended my hand to touch his shoulder. However,
- 12:01the moment my hand grazed him, a tearful cry filled the environment. At
- 12:07first it was barely saudible, but as the seconds went by, the crying
- 12:13was heard much louder, plunged me into a state of despair and confusion.
- 12:18It was a cry that seemed to be full of anguish and deep sadness.
- 12:24Besides, it seemed like I' d burst my ears at any moment.
- 12:28But in spite of that, almost as if something forced me into the dream,
- 12:31I knew I had to see that little boy' s face. So
- 12:35I kept shaking his shoulder until I got it and the boy turned to me
- 12:41revealing a face that left my heart frozen. His eyes didn' t shine.
- 12:46It was as if they were completely lifeless, as if they were dry,
- 12:50and they looked at me very coldly. His face looked more like a
- 12:54moving corpse than a child' s face was pale and oblivious with purple lips.
- 13:01A sense of horror took hold of me and at that moment I woke
- 13:07up suddenly in my bed. I tried to repeat to myself over and over
- 13:11again that everything had been a dream to try to take away the fear I
- 13:16felt when I suddenly realized something and it was that, despite being awake,
- 13:20I could still hear a child crying in exactly the same way as in my
- 13:26dreams. It was very strange, since I could almost swear that it sounded
- 13:31right next to my ear, but the light on did not reveal anyone'
- 13:37s presence. Still, the laments kept making me doubt my sanity. Desperate
- 13:43to explain all this, I got up and opened the door to my room,
- 13:46but the hope of listening to some crying child in the neighborhood faded away.
- 13:52When I met a dark and quiet corridor, everyone seemed to be deep
- 13:58asleep and the CDs reigned in every corner. But still, those cries kept
- 14:03listening to each other in my room. I remember at one point I remembered
- 14:09my mother' s advice on how to deal with spirits, and she always
- 14:13said that it was only enough to tell them that they were not welcome in
- 14:18a place to leave. I said firmly that I was not welcome, that
- 14:22I did not know who I was or why I was bothering, but that
- 14:28I had to leave my space and to my relief, the cries stopped immediately,
- 14:33causing my room to remain in total silence. And although at that time
- 14:37I thought I was done with that nightmare, I decided that the next day
- 14:43I would seek the blessing of my room to remove any negative energy. I
- 14:48didn' t want to go back to sleep anymore and I was just trying
- 14:52to think of anything to pass the time until dawn. In fact, if
- 14:56I had the necessary tools, I would have gotten up to fix the TV,
- 15:01but since I didn' t have them, I just had to wait.
- 15:05It was about half an hour before five in the morning and at that
- 15:09hour there was already movement. I felt that at that time I would no
- 15:13longer feel so lonely and I guess that thought led me to lower my guard
- 15:18and begin to sleep. And in one of those heads I was interrupted by
- 15:22an unexpected sound. A loud applause resonated near my ears and I was forced
- 15:28to open my eyes at once. I looked around, but there was no
- 15:33one a chill rolled through my back, which I thought was over. He
- 15:39wasn' t willing to leave me alone. I stayed awake until five in
- 15:45the morning, but I still didn' t hear movement, which was only
- 15:48despairing me more. Fifteen minutes passed before I heard the first door open,
- 15:54and that reassured me. However, that made him fall asleep again, but
- 16:00this time, to the point of beginning to dream again. The first thing
- 16:04I saw was the child in a fetal position, crying desperately and repeating a
- 16:11distressing plea for help. Every repetition of those words pierced my ears and the
- 16:15feeling of helplessness enveloped me and almost immediately. I woke up again this time
- 16:22listening to those pleas over and over again, but that' s not the
- 16:26only thing I noticed when I woke up. First of all, the light
- 16:30in my room was out and the glow that at first I thought was the
- 16:34light of the spotlight came from the television that had brought home a chill swept
- 16:40through my back as I realized that the screen was on, emitting a subtle
- 16:45light that cast shadows into the room. The vision on television was very frightening,
- 16:52because it was not only static, but projected images. He was the
- 16:59child of my dreams, dressed exactly as I had dreamed all night long,
- 17:03was reflected on the screen. I was paralyzed in my bed, unable to
- 17:08understand what was happening. The little one hit the TV glass begging with despair.
- 17:15Help me, the panic seized me as I watched the scene silently the
- 17:22image on the screen seemed to want to leave that place crying out for help
- 17:27with every blow. The confusion and fear were too much for me at the
- 17:33time. My mind struggled to accept the connection between my dreams and reality,
- 17:38and after a few minutes, the TV suddenly went out, plunged me into
- 17:44darkness. Again, the light in the room went on seconds later as if
- 17:49it was all over, but deep inside I knew it wasn' t like
- 17:55that. Intrigued, but terrified I approached the TV just to discover that the
- 18:00temperature was not even plugged in the room. It began to descend again and
- 18:07I felt a presence behind me. Afraid to face whatever might be there.
- 18:12I only dared to watch the reflection off the TV and, to my horror,
- 18:18the child of my dreams was right behind me. An icy sensation ran
- 18:25through my spine and before I could articulate a word, the child spoke open
- 18:30the TV without fully understanding why I decided to obey and with the few things
- 18:37at hand. I opened the TV. I remember even breaking the screen in
- 18:41the process just to face a terrifying truth within the immense apparatus lay the body
- 18:48of a little boy in the same clothes I wore in my dreams. I
- 18:55was visibly malnourished and the reality of the horror that was revealed before my eyes
- 19:00tormented me deeply without stopping me to process what I saw I ran out of
- 19:07the horrified room. I alerted the authorities. Initially, suspicion turned to me,
- 19:11but after a thorough investigation, they discovered the real man responsible, a
- 19:18wealthy man who had taken away the life of that child who used to help
- 19:22him with gardening work in his house. The truth is this is something I
- 19:29dream about from time to time and when I remember it, it still scares
- 19:33me. But the truth is, deep down, I' m glad that
- 19:36that kid had a proper funeral and could rest in peace or at least I
- 19:41think so, since I never saw him again. Story written and adapted by Lisa Hernández
