- 0:01Speaker 1: Hey, discos, need a little more Disgraceland in your life,
- 0:05Speaker 1: just to touch to get you through.
- 0:07Speaker 2: Yeah me too. This is the podcast that comes after
- 0:10Speaker 2: the podcast.
- 0:11Speaker 1: Welcome to Disgraceland, the after Party. Welcome to the Disgraceland
- 0:29Speaker 1: bonus episode, a little thing we like to call the
- 0:32Speaker 1: after party. This is the show after the show, the
- 0:34Speaker 1: party after the party, the bridge to get you from
- 0:37Speaker 1: one full episode of Disgraceland to the other. The backyard,
- 0:40Speaker 1: to dig into the dirt, our mission to uncover the truth,
- 0:43Speaker 1: to confront the myth, to reclaim the story. On this
- 0:45Speaker 1: bonus episode, all the things that annoy you about the
- 0:48Speaker 1: rock and Roll Hall of Fame. So we're starting our
- 0:50Speaker 1: own rock and Roll Hall of Fame, and we're getting
- 0:52Speaker 1: into your answers to the question of the week from
- 0:54Speaker 1: last week that's spun out of our Grace Jones episode,
- 0:57Speaker 1: and previewing our next new episode on Depeche Mode, your emails, comments, dms,
- 1:03Speaker 1: and as always, a whole lot of Rosie. This is
- 1:06Speaker 1: the podcast for the musically obsessed, the outsiders, the independent
- 1:09Speaker 1: thinkers who.
- 1:10Speaker 2: Know that the best history is the history that gets buried.
- 1:13Speaker 1: Disgraceland is where I tell the stories they didn't want
- 1:15Speaker 1: told the kind you'll end up telling someone else. All right, discos,
- 1:19Speaker 1: let's get into it. Greetings, Disgraceland listeners. Happy to be
- 1:35Speaker 1: talking to you today because it was announced this week
- 1:38Speaker 1: that Oasis along with Wu Tang Clan, are being inducted
- 1:43Speaker 1: into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in twenty
- 1:45Speaker 1: twenty six. And I mentioned both of these groups, both
- 1:49Speaker 1: of these nominees up front because I feel like of
- 1:53Speaker 1: all the inductees, these two artists might have the most
- 1:56Speaker 1: appeal to Disgraceland listeners. Actually, Joy Division Slash new Or
- 2:00Speaker 1: was also inducted. I probably should have mentioned them up
- 2:04Speaker 1: up front as well. Phil Collins, Billie Idol, Shade, Iron Maiden,
- 2:09Speaker 1: and Luther Vandros are also going into the Rock and
- 2:12Speaker 1: Roll Hall of Fame this year. The list of artists
- 2:15Speaker 1: nominated who were not inducted, who aren't being inducted the snubs,
- 2:21Speaker 1: if you will, is the following Black Crows, Jeff Buckley,
- 2:26Speaker 1: Pink Shakira, Lauren Hill, Mariah Carey, and Melissa Ethridge. This process,
- 2:33Speaker 1: the nomination process, the inductee process for the Rock and
- 2:37Speaker 1: Roll Hall of Fame is a head scratcher every year.
- 2:41Speaker 2: It feels like.
- 2:41Speaker 1: Someone's always upset, and I'm usually one of these people
- 2:44Speaker 1: who's always upset. This constant source of frustration around rock
- 2:49Speaker 1: and Roll Hall of Fame inductees is for me, not
- 2:52Speaker 1: so much who gets in and who gets snubbed. It's
- 2:56Speaker 1: more about what is and what is in rock and roll.
- 3:01Speaker 1: Now some people and no offense, but mainly really old people,
- 3:04Speaker 1: people who came of age listening to rock and roll
- 3:07Speaker 1: sort of before punk rock and before hip hop. A
- 3:11Speaker 1: lot of these folks, not all of them, but a
- 3:13Speaker 1: lot of them, often argue against inductees being nominated whose
- 3:18Speaker 1: styles don't align to the more traditional guitar based rock
- 3:21Speaker 1: and roll of the seventies, the sixties, the fifties, your
- 3:24Speaker 1: Led Zeppelin's Eagles, that sort of thing, you know, more
- 3:28Speaker 1: traditional guitar based rock and traditional R and B and
- 3:31Speaker 1: soul like your Otis Redding's, Aretha Franklin's, etc. So most
- 3:36Speaker 1: of these folks don't think that hip hop or punk artists,
- 3:39Speaker 1: or heavy metal artists like Iron Maiden, than any of
- 3:42Speaker 1: these folks should be.
- 3:43Speaker 2: In the Hall of Fame.
- 3:45Speaker 1: Never mind pop artists who have been inducted, like Madonna
- 3:49Speaker 1: or George Michael but I don't necessarily agree with that
- 3:54Speaker 1: at all. My definition of who should and shouldn't be
- 3:57Speaker 1: in the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame doesn't so
- 4:00Speaker 1: much to do with genre or style. I don't think
- 4:02Speaker 1: that shouldn't matter. Rock hip hop, pop, R and B
- 4:07Speaker 1: quote unquote, rock and roll, rock and roll. It's not
- 4:12Speaker 1: just two guitars and like a long haired front man
- 4:16Speaker 1: up there singing on stage making records. It's to me,
- 4:20Speaker 1: rock and roll is more just about popular music that
- 4:24Speaker 1: young hip counterculture kids listen to rock and roll from
- 4:28Speaker 1: its earliest days. It's an outdated term now, sure, but
- 4:31Speaker 1: from its earliest days it was all about counterculture and
- 4:35Speaker 1: the best of it.
- 4:36Speaker 2: No matter how.
- 4:37Speaker 1: Popular it was, it always adhered to this definition, this
- 4:41Speaker 1: sort of combative anti authority type of thing. And if
- 4:46Speaker 1: you were a combative anti authority type of kid, that's
- 4:49Speaker 1: what you gravitated toward. So if you're listening to Wu
- 4:52Speaker 1: Tang Clan when they first hit, or Nirvana or Madonna earlier,
- 4:56Speaker 1: or the Fujis, yes, these artists were massively pop popular,
- 5:00Speaker 1: but they were also a little bit dangerous, a little
- 5:02Speaker 1: bit subversive, and young. Like I said, young hip kids.
- 5:05Speaker 1: No matter how suburban or normy. They may have been,
- 5:08Speaker 1: or should I say we may have been. We were
- 5:11Speaker 1: listening to cool bands, both mainstream and alternative. Okay, Nirvana
- 5:18Speaker 1: super mainstream, also alternative. Madonna too, super mainstream, also super subversive.
- 5:26Speaker 1: Both those bands, Nirvana and Madonna, despite guitars or pop music,
- 5:30Speaker 1: whatever it is, they were listened to broadly across the
- 5:35Speaker 1: counterculture in the same way that I don't know Elvis
- 5:39Speaker 1: Presley and Aretha Franklin were decades prior. It's the same
- 5:44Speaker 1: thing to me now. I love Phil Collins and Shade,
- 5:49Speaker 1: two artists who are going in this year, but.
- 5:52Speaker 2: Rock and roll. Come on, they're not rock and roll.
- 5:56Speaker 1: When I was a kid listening to again Nirvana, Madonnaanah
- 6:00Speaker 1: Wu Tang, Phil Collins and Shade, that was music that
- 6:05Speaker 1: my parents listen to, not me. Okay, you get it.
- 6:08Speaker 1: This is my definition. I know you guys get it,
- 6:10Speaker 1: you're smart, but that's just me. I want to know
- 6:13Speaker 1: what you guys actually think specifically, Okay, I want you.
- 6:17Speaker 1: I want to know who do you think should be
- 6:19Speaker 1: in the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame that is
- 6:21Speaker 1: not six one seven nine h six six sixty three
- 6:23Speaker 1: eight call me, leave me a voicemail or send me
- 6:25Speaker 1: a text. Email me at Disgrace lamp Pod, hit me
- 6:28Speaker 1: on the socials at Disgrace Lampod on Instagram, and what
- 6:31Speaker 1: I want to do. Listen, Let's start our own rock
- 6:34Speaker 1: and roll Hall of Fame, our own alternative indie millennial
- 6:38Speaker 1: gen x with awesome classic boomer case of music, our
- 6:42Speaker 1: own utopian rock and roll Hall of Fame. Okay, let's
- 6:45Speaker 1: just use the rock and roll Hall of Fame criteria,
- 6:47Speaker 1: just this one of having to have released your first
- 6:50Speaker 1: music twenty five years ago to be nominated. Okay, that's
- 6:54Speaker 1: that's their benchmark. And I like that benchmark twenty five
- 6:57Speaker 1: years since your first release. And let's induct music that
- 7:01Speaker 1: we listened to when we were skipping school and we
- 7:03Speaker 1: were drinking up by the railroad tracks and we were
- 7:05Speaker 1: cruising around in our Volkswagen Jettas or in our cool
- 7:08Speaker 1: friends uncle's muscle car or.
- 7:11Speaker 2: You know whatever.
- 7:12Speaker 1: This should be the criteria by which we are judging
- 7:15Speaker 1: our rock and Roll Hall of Fame inductees. Okay, as
- 7:17Speaker 1: well as music that we bought on little plastic compact
- 7:20Speaker 1: discs and cassettes and tower records that we read about
- 7:24Speaker 1: and spin that we maybe read about for first before
- 7:27Speaker 1: we read it, and Spin we read about them, and
- 7:28Speaker 1: Maximum rock and Roll that we watched on Beavis and
- 7:31Speaker 1: butt Head.
- 7:31Speaker 2: We watched vis about it to make fun of these artists.
- 7:33Speaker 1: We watched them on one hundred and twenty Minutes Headbangers Ball,
- 7:36Speaker 1: heard them on Beverly Hills nine O two one oh
- 7:39Speaker 1: or later on Dawson's Creek whatever it is.
- 7:41Speaker 2: You know the type of music I'm talking about.
- 7:42Speaker 1: Okay, let's induct the awesome musicians who aren't yet in
- 7:46Speaker 1: the rock and Roll Hall of Fame and create our
- 7:48Speaker 1: own little rock and roll Hall of Fame. I'll go
- 7:49Speaker 1: first my first nominee. Okay, right here, Fugazi. Their influence
- 7:53Speaker 1: is undeniable, and they'd probably insist on tickets for the
- 7:57Speaker 1: ceremony being no more than five bucks and make it
- 8:00Speaker 1: all ages event as conditions for their appearance. So this
- 8:03Speaker 1: one would be subversive and just like I said, completely influential.
- 8:07Speaker 1: They deserve to be in there now. Next thing I
- 8:09Speaker 1: want to do, I want to write this year is
- 8:11Speaker 1: wrong right off the bat, and I want to put
- 8:13Speaker 1: Jeff Buckley and.
- 8:14Speaker 2: Lauren Hill, who were both snubbed this year.
- 8:15Speaker 1: I want to put them in our Rock and Roll
- 8:17Speaker 1: Hall of Fame again, both massively influential artists. If Coldplay,
- 8:22Speaker 1: I swear to god, if Coldplay gets in before Jeff
- 8:25Speaker 1: Buckley and if Shakira gets in before Lauren Hill, we
- 8:29Speaker 1: are in trouble people. But that's just my own smart
- 8:33Speaker 1: ass gen X bias. So Joy Division slash New Order.
- 8:38Speaker 1: Despite how much I can't stand the hybrid nature of
- 8:41Speaker 1: the nomination, I get it, I understand it, and I
- 8:45Speaker 1: love both. I mean it's really the same group, just
- 8:47Speaker 1: different singer. I love Joydvision slash New Order. So score
- 8:50Speaker 1: one for the eighties deserve they should be in.
- 8:53Speaker 2: Okay?
- 8:53Speaker 1: Can we score one for the nineties now though, and
- 8:56Speaker 1: put Jane's Addiction in three all time classic no soh
- 9:00Speaker 1: skip albums from Jane's Addiction plus the band's frontman started
- 9:04Speaker 1: a music festival that defined pop culture in the early
- 9:08Speaker 1: nineteen nineties, and in a lot of ways, it's still
- 9:10Speaker 1: defining pop culture.
- 9:12Speaker 2: You know why Jaan's Addiction is not in?
- 9:14Speaker 1: This is my theory. The Hall does not want to
- 9:16Speaker 1: have to deal with Perry Ferrell. Perry Ferrell is a lot, Okay,
- 9:22Speaker 1: He's a handful, and I think They just feel like
- 9:24Speaker 1: he's going to show up with like the Jim Rose
- 9:26Speaker 1: circus in tow and like three methed out edm DJs
- 9:29Speaker 1: trailing behind him when he.
- 9:30Speaker 2: Goes up to accept his award. That's what I think
- 9:33Speaker 2: is going on here.
- 9:33Speaker 1: There's no excuse for why Jane's Addiction is not in
- 9:37Speaker 1: the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame compared to the
- 9:41Speaker 1: other artists that are in, even Oasis, who I love,
- 9:43Speaker 1: and I'm happy they're in there, but still Jane's addiction
- 9:46Speaker 1: way just way more influential on pop culture, all right.
- 9:49Speaker 1: In twenty twenty two, a Lotis morris Set declined an
- 9:54Speaker 1: invitation to perform at the Rock and Roll Hall of
- 9:56Speaker 1: Fame induction ceremony, claiming that she didn't want to be
- 9:59Speaker 1: part of an event that reduced women. And this is
- 10:02Speaker 1: the exact reason Alanis Morissett needs to be inducted into
- 10:05Speaker 1: the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. What's the first
- 10:08Speaker 1: rule of rock stardom? What's the first rule of being
- 10:12Speaker 1: a rock star? The first rule of being a rock
- 10:14Speaker 1: star is to be a rock star. Okay, I think
- 10:18Speaker 1: I just made that up, but you know what I'm saying,
- 10:20Speaker 1: We should be celebrating the anti heroes in rock and roll.
- 10:23Speaker 1: We should be celebrating the truly subversive as opposed to
- 10:27Speaker 1: the boot lickers who are campaigning for votes behind the scenes. Next,
- 10:31Speaker 1: Bikini Kill, because if you're going to nominate Melissa Ethridge
- 10:34Speaker 1: and recognize the whole Lilith Fair influence on nineties pop culture,
- 10:39Speaker 1: then you have to recognize the Riot Girl influence on
- 10:42Speaker 1: that same decade.
- 10:44Speaker 2: And Bikini Kill is the.
- 10:45Speaker 1: Sonic boom of that moment. New York Dolls, New York Dolls,
- 10:50Speaker 1: New York Dolls. I should have led with New York Dolls.
- 10:53Speaker 1: New York Dolls might be of all the artists I've mentioned, yet,
- 10:57Speaker 1: they might be the most influential.
- 10:58Speaker 2: Who is not in the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame.
- 11:00Speaker 1: You don't get punk rock, guys without the New York
- 11:03Speaker 1: for Dolls, and without punk rock, you don't get grunge,
- 11:06Speaker 1: and you don't get whatever the hell it is we're
- 11:07Speaker 1: listening to nowadays.
- 11:08Speaker 2: Okay, New York Dolls need.
- 11:10Speaker 1: To be in the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame
- 11:12Speaker 1: full stop. Also, I'm from Boston, so forgive me Jay
- 11:15Speaker 1: Giles band.
- 11:16Speaker 2: What are we doing? No love for Boston? Why? Why
- 11:20Speaker 2: I'm biased. I know I am, but just listen.
- 11:23Speaker 1: You know how you got artists from your hometown and
- 11:27Speaker 1: you know they're big, but you're so clouded by the
- 11:30Speaker 1: context of being so close to them your whole life
- 11:34Speaker 1: that you can't tell how big they are. That's what
- 11:35Speaker 1: the Jay Giles Band is from me. On the one hand,
- 11:40Speaker 1: they seem huge. I mean, Peter Wolf was married to
- 11:44Speaker 1: Faye Dunaway, Okay, and at a time when Faye Dunaway
- 11:48Speaker 1: was like, you know, at the absolute you know, pinnacle
- 11:52Speaker 1: of the zeitgeist. So I don't know, I mean, but
- 11:56Speaker 1: I still see, like you know, if you're from Boston,
- 11:59Speaker 1: you know you run into Peter Wolf all the time. Anyhow,
- 12:02Speaker 1: I just think Jay Giles Band, like, just okay, just
- 12:05Speaker 1: try this for a test. Put the Jay Gaales Band on.
- 12:08Speaker 1: Next time you and your friends are hanging out partying,
- 12:11Speaker 1: drinking you know, beer, shitty beer out of red solo
- 12:14Speaker 1: cups and playing quarters or whatever. Put Jay Guiles on,
- 12:17Speaker 1: Put centerfold on or freeze frame or must have got lost,
- 12:20Speaker 1: and try not having a good time.
- 12:21Speaker 2: You cannot. It's impossible.
- 12:24Speaker 1: These these songs were stone cold hits, and these hits
- 12:28Speaker 1: like number one hits, by the way, came after the
- 12:31Speaker 1: band already had a decade of blowing faces out touring
- 12:35Speaker 1: across America with the Stones, Thin Lizzie, Stevie Wonder and others.
- 12:39Speaker 2: Just put Jay Giles in the Rock and Roll Hall
- 12:40Speaker 2: of Fame. Make Peter Wolf happy.
- 12:42Speaker 1: Okay, Let's make the rock and roll gods happy here
- 12:44Speaker 1: and induct the Replacements and Big Star on the same ballot.
- 12:48Speaker 1: Ram went into the Hall in two thousand and seven.
- 12:51Speaker 1: They wouldn't have even have been a band without the
- 12:53Speaker 1: Replacements or Big Star. And while we're at it, Eric
- 12:57Speaker 1: being rocking an Iced Tea both need to be in.
- 13:01Speaker 1: It's This is like a New York Dolls saying these
- 13:03Speaker 1: guys they need to be in like last week.
- 13:05Speaker 2: It's hard. I can't imagine.
- 13:07Speaker 1: Nineties hip hop without either of these hip hop artists,
- 13:11Speaker 1: and and any hip hop that came after these these,
- 13:14Speaker 1: after Eric B and Rock.
- 13:15Speaker 2: Him and after Iced Tea would not be the same. Okay.
- 13:18Speaker 1: Their influence is massive, different types of influence completely. I
- 13:23Speaker 1: can make an argument for Tri Tribe cloll Quest as well.
- 13:26Speaker 1: Those those three records were everywhere. They were everywhere everywhere
- 13:29Speaker 1: you went in the nineties. You would hear tribecloll Quest.
- 13:32Speaker 1: Everyone listened to them, not just hip hop kids. The
- 13:34Speaker 1: band truly crossed over. And if we're gonna have the
- 13:36Speaker 1: Beastie Boys in the rock and roll Hall of Fame,
- 13:38Speaker 1: and we absolutely should, we should have a tribe call
- 13:40Speaker 1: Quest as well as well as Iced Tea and Eric
- 13:42Speaker 1: being rock him. So what do you think of our
- 13:44Speaker 1: little gen X millennial great taste in boomer music rock
- 13:48Speaker 1: and roll Hall of Fame that we got going here?
- 13:50Speaker 1: I think it's shaping up pretty well. But then again,
- 13:53Speaker 1: I don't really care because I'm a disaffected, latch key
- 13:56Speaker 1: kid who's just, you know, riddled with apathy and indifference
- 13:59Speaker 1: and whatever. Never mind, No, I do care. I'm kidding,
- 14:03Speaker 1: and I want to know what you guys think.
- 14:04Speaker 2: Seriously.
- 14:05Speaker 1: I think that nineties music right now, there's already been
- 14:10Speaker 1: a resurgence, but I think that resurgence is going to
- 14:12Speaker 1: get even greater. I think the influence of nineties on
- 14:15Speaker 1: popular culture it's it's really I think this is the
- 14:19Speaker 1: beginning of its peak. But we got a ways to go,
- 14:22Speaker 1: and I think we're going to start to see more
- 14:24Speaker 1: music that I listened to as a kid in junior
- 14:28Speaker 1: high and in high school and in college. I think
- 14:31Speaker 1: we're going to start to see more of that influence
- 14:34Speaker 1: on modern day pop culture. And I think a lot
- 14:37Speaker 1: more of these artists are going to go into the
- 14:38Speaker 1: Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in fairly short order, hopefully.
- 14:41Speaker 1: But again, I want to know what you guys think.
- 14:43Speaker 1: Six one seven nine oh six six six three eight.
- 14:46Speaker 1: Leave me a voicemail, semi a text, and you might
- 14:48Speaker 1: hear yourself and your answer on next week's after Party

- 15:48Speaker 1: Jones is not in the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame,
- 15:51Speaker 1: but she is the newest subject of Disgraceland because she
- 15:55Speaker 1: was not just a multiiphon icon of the nineteen eighties,
- 15:59Speaker 1: she is also a walking true crime. Her story is scary,
- 16:04Speaker 1: it's harrowing, it's surprising. I didn't know a lot of
- 16:09Speaker 1: this going into this story. It's also inspiring, and you
- 16:12Speaker 1: can hear it now if you haven't already, as it
- 16:14Speaker 1: is the latest episode in your feed right before this
- 16:17Speaker 1: here bonus eep that we're doing right now that you're

- 16:35Speaker 1: to make. Well, you need to listen to this classic
- 16:37Speaker 1: episode of Disgrace Slam and that's going to hit your

- 16:44Speaker 1: that's on Depeche Mode. It's gonna be coming your way
- 16:46Speaker 1: on Tuesday. Debauchery, excess, near death experiences in some of
- 16:50Speaker 1: the sexiest music evert that all hits next week. Guys,
- 16:55Speaker 1: I'm gonna have myself a little depeche Mode weekend. Actually,
- 16:57Speaker 1: in preparation, I'm gonna listen Violator on CD, Yes on CD,
- 17:02Speaker 1: because it sounds incredible. It's one of the best sounding
- 17:05Speaker 1: albums of all time. Depeche modes Violator, It's just incredible.
- 17:11Speaker 2: And what else.
- 17:12Speaker 1: There's a recent depeche Mode live like concert film. I
- 17:18Speaker 1: think it's called M Mode. Depeche Mode M is it
- 17:23Speaker 1: called M I'm looking here and I can't quite tell, but.
- 17:26Speaker 2: I've seen it.
- 17:26Speaker 1: It's easy to get and it's great, and these guys
- 17:28Speaker 1: are super old and they lost nothing nothing. And there's
- 17:33Speaker 1: also the Depeche Mode one oh one, which I think
- 17:36Speaker 1: that's the more classic depeche Mode concert film.
- 17:38Speaker 2: I don't know.
- 17:39Speaker 1: I'm gonna get in someto depeche Mode concert films this weekend.
- 17:43Speaker 1: Delve into some proper rock stardom to get ready for
- 17:45Speaker 1: Tuesday's episode. When you're listening to our new depeche Mode story,
- 17:49Speaker 1: be thinking about their song Personal Jesus. Great song, A
- 17:54Speaker 1: song that upset my mother to no end. That video,
- 17:58Speaker 1: Oh my goodness, it it just drove her nuts. I
- 18:02Speaker 1: still don't know why. When you're listening to depeche Mode
- 18:05Speaker 1: and you're thinking about Personal Jesus, think about not their version,
- 18:10Speaker 1: think about the Johnny Cash version.
- 18:13Speaker 2: It's such an.
- 18:14Speaker 1: Unlikely cover song. I remember when that came out, we were.
- 18:17Speaker 2: Like, what what the fuck?
- 18:21Speaker 1: It made no sense, But then again quickly it made
- 18:25Speaker 1: all the sense in the world. My point is that
- 18:28Speaker 1: it's a very unlikely cover, and I love unlikely covers,
- 18:31Speaker 1: and I love the conversation around unlikely covers. And that's
- 18:36Speaker 1: gonna be our new question of the week. That's gonna
- 18:39Speaker 1: be we're gonna be talking about next week. So call
- 18:40Speaker 1: me six one seven, nine oh six, six sixt three
- 18:43Speaker 1: eight and let me know what songs you've come across
- 18:46Speaker 1: in your music listening experience that are great unlikely covers.
- 18:52Speaker 1: Marilyn Manson's Uh Sweet Dreams by the Rhythmics comes to mind,
- 18:58Speaker 1: Beck covering rat Bury Beret. There's a whole bunch here.
- 19:02Speaker 1: Let me know some of your favorite unlikely cover songs.
- 19:06Speaker 1: You know which familiar song did you hear covered by
- 19:09Speaker 1: an artist that made you go Six one seven nine
- 19:12Speaker 1: oh six six six three eight. Leave me a voicemail
- 19:14Speaker 1: with your answers. Text me with your answers. Email me
- 19:17Speaker 1: at Disgrace Lampod at gmail dot com with your answers.
- 19:20Speaker 1: Hit me on Instagram and Facebook and elsewhere at Disgrace
- 19:24Speaker 1: Lampod with your answers. I will be back right after
- 19:28Speaker 1: this with you got it your answers to last week's
- 19:31Speaker 1: question of the week. All right, guys, six one seven
- 19:53Speaker 1: nine oh six six six three eight. You know where
- 19:55Speaker 1: I'm at, Iam in the phone booth. It's the one
- 19:56Speaker 1: across the hall. I'm hanging on the telephone with all
- 19:58Speaker 1: your beautiful Disgraceland listeners. This goes last week's question of
- 20:01Speaker 1: the week in relation to our most recent episode on
- 20:04Speaker 1: Grace Jones was which musicians do you love who made
- 20:08Speaker 1: the transition to acting or which actors do you love
- 20:12Speaker 1: who made the transition to music. Let's hear from Amy in.
- 20:15Speaker 2: The four one four.
- 20:17Speaker 3: Hey, Jake, this is Amy. I'm calling to tell you
- 20:20Speaker 3: that my favorite actor slash musician is Tom White and
- 20:26Speaker 3: he popped. There's two of them. They're both profees of
- 20:29Speaker 3: Jim Jarmush, who is one of my favorite directors. I
- 20:32Speaker 3: love the work that Tom White has done, and by
- 20:35Speaker 3: love that Bill Die I think it is and other things,
- 20:41Speaker 3: Oh dractul love he was amazing.
- 20:43Speaker 4: And Dracula.
- 20:43Speaker 3: He was actually the best actor in the nineties Dracula
- 20:46Speaker 3: because really nobody else is very.
- 20:47Speaker 5: Good in it.
- 20:48Speaker 3: I think that answers your question, So have a great night.
- 20:51Speaker 2: Bye, Amy, Thank you for your message. I love Tom
- 20:54Speaker 2: Waite so much.
- 20:55Speaker 1: You know, when I was making music back in the day,
- 20:58Speaker 1: my dream was that if we ever got a big
- 21:00Speaker 1: record deal, like a huge record deal. You know, this
- 21:02Speaker 1: is the nineties when they spent millions of dollars on
- 21:04Speaker 1: videos and we had a gigantic you know, if we
- 21:09Speaker 1: were giving a gigantic video budget, my dream is to
- 21:11Speaker 1: hire Tom Waits to act in our video sadly though
- 21:16Speaker 1: it never happened.
- 21:16Speaker 2: But I am with you, I hear you.
- 21:19Speaker 1: I love Tom Waits and well for basically everything, but
- 21:23Speaker 1: I love you mentioned a couple good roles, but I
- 21:25Speaker 1: love him in The Outsiders as well. It's a brief,
- 21:28Speaker 1: brief role, Buck Merril. He's also great as the limo
- 21:32Speaker 1: driver in Robert Altman's shortcuts. Basically, anytime the guy comes
- 21:36Speaker 1: on screen, I like you get excited.
- 21:38Speaker 2: So thank you for your call. Appreciate you.
- 21:41Speaker 1: Let's check out Abby from the five oh five on
- 21:44Speaker 1: our question of great music memoirs.
- 21:47Speaker 5: Hey, Jake Tabby call in from the five oh five
- 21:51Speaker 5: talking about great biographies. Of course, Keith richards autobiography is
- 21:57Speaker 5: phenomenal and the all time classic Hammer of Gods led Zeppelin,
- 22:03Speaker 5: and I really also enjoyed Zayan's conversations with Tom Petty
- 22:08Speaker 5: oldies but goodies keep him coming.
- 22:11Speaker 1: Thanks Abby, thanks for the call. Keith Richard's life fantastic
- 22:16Speaker 1: and all timer. In all the conversation however, that we've
- 22:19Speaker 1: had over this week and last about great music memoirs,
- 22:22Speaker 1: you are the first to bring up Hammer of the Gods,
- 22:25Speaker 1: which what a controversial book when it came out. I
- 22:29Speaker 1: think I was, I don't know, fourteen when I read
- 22:33Speaker 1: that book. I should not have read it at fourteen.
- 22:36Speaker 1: I hope my kids don't read it at fourteen. That's
- 22:39Speaker 1: a great one.
- 22:40Speaker 2: And I love I love, love love.
- 22:43Speaker 1: Tom Petty the book he did with Warren Zan's. It's fantastic.
- 22:47Speaker 1: It's so good. Thank you for those recks. Let's hear
- 22:52Speaker 1: from the four to eight.
- 22:54Speaker 4: Oh hey, Jake, this is Sue and Georgia responding to
- 22:59Speaker 4: your requests for how we listen to podcasts. What podcasts
- 23:04Speaker 4: we listen to. I prefer a storytelling podcast. I want
- 23:08Speaker 4: to be told a story, a good story. My first
- 23:12Speaker 4: was This American Life, and from there I have accumulated
- 23:16Speaker 4: the number. I went to my favorite murder, which is
- 23:20Speaker 4: How I found You several years ago, so Disgrace Plan
- 23:25Speaker 4: and then Hollywood Land through that great storytelling. I enjoy them.
- 23:30Speaker 4: I'm way old. I'm in my seventies, so I don't
- 23:34Speaker 4: know all the bands that you talk about, but I
- 23:36Speaker 4: looked them up and I checked them out. You know,
- 23:39Speaker 4: I had different takes, way different tastes. I'm a child
- 23:44Speaker 4: of the sixties, so a lot of pop anyway, enjoy
- 23:48Speaker 4: your show. Glad to have you on exactly right now
- 23:51Speaker 4: and look forward to future stories. Take care soon.
- 23:57Speaker 2: Thank you, thank you for your message.
- 23:58Speaker 1: And yeah, we welcome fans of all music, of music
- 24:03Speaker 1: from every generation. Sue, I want to I want to
- 24:06Speaker 1: hit on this American life and the storytelling type of
- 24:09Speaker 1: podcasting that we do here and that they do it
- 24:13Speaker 1: exactly right and that we all love. And I think
- 24:17Speaker 1: in a way, this American Life it was teaching us
- 24:21Speaker 1: all how to tell stories. That podcast was and iraglass
- 24:25Speaker 1: was before many of us even knew that this is
- 24:27Speaker 1: what we would end up doing. So it's no surprise
- 24:31Speaker 1: to me that our listeners, the great listeners like you,
- 24:34Speaker 1: love this American life. It's it's it's kind of the
- 24:37Speaker 1: big bang of storytelling podcasting.
- 24:39Speaker 2: It's fantastic.
- 24:40Speaker 1: Six one seven nine oh six six six three eight.
- 24:43Speaker 1: You can call in like Sue and leave a message.
- 24:45Speaker 2: You can also text. All right, Let's check out this
- 24:47Speaker 2: text from Miranda in.
- 24:51Speaker 1: The eight five six, Hey Jake, Miranda from South Jersey here.
- 24:55Speaker 1: I don't know why people do this, but they do it,
- 24:57Speaker 1: so I did. I just came across this website. I
- 24:58Speaker 1: thought you'd appreciate it. Www Dot.
- 25:01Speaker 2: What should I read? Next dot com.
- 25:03Speaker 1: I know you're a reader as am I and always
- 25:05Speaker 1: looking for recommendations, and I found the concept interesting. My
- 25:09Speaker 1: personal favorite book is The Lake of Dead Languages by
- 25:12Speaker 1: Carol Goodman. It's a thriller with a wild twist, and
- 25:15Speaker 1: I think you'd like it. Also, I watched Tiller Russell's
- 25:18Speaker 1: Waco doc. Hands down one of the best put together
- 25:20Speaker 1: documentaries I've ever seen in my life. The parts with
- 25:23Speaker 1: the helicopter footage showing the events and the story of
- 25:25Speaker 1: the survivors we're describing it is wild. Thank you for
- 25:28Speaker 1: making the best podcast on the planet, truly, and congratulations
- 25:31Speaker 1: on the exactly right.
- 25:32Speaker 2: iHeart team up. That is amazing. Eight five six, Miranda,
- 25:37Speaker 2: thank you so much. I love this resource. What should
- 25:39Speaker 2: I read next? It looks cool.
- 25:41Speaker 1: I can't wait to delve into it a little more fully.
- 25:43Speaker 1: The Lake of Dead Language is by Carol Goodman, a
- 25:46Speaker 1: thriller with a wild twist. Right up my alley. This
- 25:49Speaker 1: sounds awesome, And yes, Tiller's Waco doc on Netflix is
- 25:54Speaker 1: absolutely incredible.
- 25:57Speaker 2: It's did you use.
- 25:58Speaker 1: The word harrowing so we used to describe it that
- 26:02Speaker 1: that feels accurate If you didn't, That's how that's what
- 26:04Speaker 1: I'm going to say about that. I'm kind of thinking
- 26:07Speaker 1: about it now. I'm losing my thought here. Back to
- 26:11Speaker 1: the text messages. Trip me up there, Miranda, appreciate you.
- 26:16Speaker 1: Let's check out the four to one two. Hey, Jake,
- 26:20Speaker 1: this is Heather the Yinser and I kind of have
- 26:23Speaker 1: a first world problem. I've been off work the last
- 26:26Speaker 1: several weeks and haven't had a chance to listen to
- 26:29Speaker 1: see if you read any of my reviews on Spotify.
- 26:32Speaker 1: I usually listen to all your podcasts going to and
- 26:34Speaker 1: from work, so that hasn't happened, and I'm about a
- 26:36Speaker 1: month behind. And now I feel like Mickey Mouse and
- 26:38Speaker 1: the fucking Fantasia. There's so many episodes to catch up on,
- 26:41Speaker 1: so much of a good thing. Can you tell me
- 26:44Speaker 1: if you read any reviews from Heather the y Inser
- 26:47Speaker 1: or Coropolis peeps, that's my old Spotify name. I'm dying
- 26:50Speaker 1: to get my hands on a double Elvis T shirt
- 26:52Speaker 1: or hat. Thanks in advance and rock a rolla. Heather
- 26:55Speaker 1: appreciate you as always. No, we did not read one
- 26:59Speaker 1: of your reviews, but you know what, Heather, email me
- 27:03Speaker 1: or just respond here via text. Your shirt size I'll
- 27:06Speaker 1: see what we got, and I will just take you
- 27:08Speaker 1: at your word that you left a review, and I'll
- 27:10Speaker 1: send you something good. Peoples, what what is this? What?
- 27:14Speaker 4: Wait?
- 27:14Speaker 2: What's happening? People are getting stuff in the mail? What's Yeah?
- 27:17Speaker 1: Well, occasionally you guys leave reviews on Apple podcasts, and
- 27:21Speaker 1: if I read the review here on the show and
- 27:26Speaker 1: you hear your review, you get in touch six one
- 27:29Speaker 1: seven nine oh six six six three eight via text
- 27:31Speaker 1: or voicemail and send me your shirt size. Not saying
- 27:34Speaker 1: you get a shirt. You might get a pin, you
- 27:35Speaker 1: might get a sticker. Sometimes I send shirts, sometimes I
- 27:38Speaker 1: send signed books. And the reason I do this is
- 27:40Speaker 1: because the reviews help power discovery of the show. Super important.
- 27:45Speaker 1: Lou two four oh seven on Apple Podcasts, great content,
- 27:48Speaker 1: Enjoy the pod, love the format.
- 27:50Speaker 2: Hey, Lou, get in touch. We'll get you some merch.
- 27:53Speaker 2: See how easy that was.
- 27:54Speaker 1: Just go to Apple Podcasts and leave a review for
- 27:56Speaker 1: disgrace sand and hold on, hold on. Some of you
- 27:58Speaker 1: are saying, but wait, I left review and I haven't
- 28:00Speaker 1: gotten anything in the mill yet. Alison, Marie Spencer and
- 28:05Speaker 1: Rob McLean, You've got stuff coming your way shortly. Anyone
- 28:08Speaker 1: else who left a review and heard it read back
- 28:11Speaker 1: on the pod. Get in touch and we'll get you
- 28:13Speaker 1: some merch. If you haven't left review, go for it
- 28:15Speaker 1: and we'll get you some merch.
- 28:16Speaker 2: All right.
- 28:17Speaker 1: A two eight text in Hey Jake, this is Arwin
- 28:19Speaker 1: from the eight to eight two answers for this week
- 28:22Speaker 1: Crossover Artists answer. Tom Waits is my favorite crossover artists.
- 28:25Speaker 1: His music and acting they are fantastic. That's two for
- 28:30Speaker 1: Tom Waits, guys. Arwin goes on to say, when do
- 28:33Speaker 1: I listen to podcasts? I often listen twice, once when
- 28:35Speaker 1: I have insomnia and need to listen to True Crying
- 28:37Speaker 1: to fall asleep, and then I listen again sometime in
- 28:40Speaker 1: the next few days because I want to hear the
- 28:42Speaker 1: episode while fully awake. I wonder if anyone else does this, well, Arwen,
- 28:47Speaker 1: I'll tell you. I oftentimes fall asleep when I'm reviewing
- 28:53Speaker 1: the mixes of Disgrace Land, and uh then I wake
- 28:58Speaker 1: up and I finished the review.
- 29:00Speaker 2: It's the first time admitted that to anyone. Matt there
- 29:05Speaker 2: you go. Don't take that personally.
- 29:07Speaker 1: Okay, who else we got here? Let's do a couple
- 29:09Speaker 1: more of these texts. The nine oh seven rights in Hey, Jay,
- 29:13Speaker 1: congrats to you and all the team at Double Elvis
- 29:15Speaker 1: for joining with Exactly Right Media. It was Karen and
- 29:17Speaker 1: Georgia the guided me to Disgraceland in the first place.
- 29:20Speaker 1: How exciting to see what happens with my two favorite
- 29:23Speaker 1: podcasts joined forces. Keep doing what you do in Lisa
- 29:25Speaker 1: from the nine oh seven, Lisa, appreciate the support.
- 29:28Speaker 2: Thank you.
- 29:28Speaker 1: We are psyched on our partnership with Exactly Right and
- 29:31Speaker 1: with Karen and Georgia from my favorite murder Ato three
- 29:34Speaker 1: texts in Hey, fucking phenomenal Patti Smith episode. The way
- 29:37Speaker 1: you told her story was just as badass as she
- 29:40Speaker 1: is rock on. Thank you eight oh three. That was
- 29:43Speaker 1: nice of you to say. Three two three Rights and
- 29:45Speaker 1: Jake Jeff from the three two three The bar has
- 29:47Speaker 1: been raised with the Patti Smith episode. You guys knocked
- 29:50Speaker 1: it out of the park. You mentioned Jim Carroll a
- 29:52Speaker 1: few times. Hopefully you have an episode brewing on Jim.
- 29:55Speaker 1: He's put out some great punk records and not to
- 29:57Speaker 1: mention his book then the film Basketball Diaries. Yes, definitely
- 30:01Speaker 1: have a Jim Carroll episode in the works, or at
- 30:04Speaker 1: least on a list that'll be coming.
- 30:06Speaker 2: Thanks Jeff, appreciate you guys.
- 30:08Speaker 1: You knowwhere else is coming me and your emails and
- 30:11Speaker 1: some recommendations on the other side of this break.
- 30:29Speaker 2: All right, guys, we are back, and I've sort of made.
- 30:30Speaker 1: A pledge in the last few weeks to do more recommendations,
- 30:33Speaker 1: both here in the after Party music recommendations, we'll do
- 30:38Speaker 1: some film and TV rex as well, but also with
- 30:41Speaker 1: zath Over in his rap party episode in the Hollywood
- 30:45Speaker 1: Land Feed. And we got into a really interesting discussion
- 30:48Speaker 1: this week on great theme songs from films, which is
- 30:52Speaker 1: a harder question.
- 30:53Speaker 2: To answer than you might think.
- 30:55Speaker 1: Excuse me, Matt, give the people a little bit of
- 30:58Speaker 1: a taste of that conversation.
- 31:01Speaker 6: So let me jump on my picks here. My first
- 31:02Speaker 6: one is I'm going to go the route that you
- 31:05Speaker 6: try to avoid I think a little bit here, and
- 31:08Speaker 6: I'm going to choose the song Weird Science by Oingo Boingo.
- 31:11Speaker 2: That's a great one actually from John Hughes. I would listen.
- 31:14Speaker 2: I would listen to that on purpose. I would this.
- 31:17Speaker 6: I mean it comes so it's on that it was
- 31:18Speaker 6: written for that movie, the John Hughes movie, but it's
- 31:21Speaker 6: also on Oingo Boingco's Dead Man's Party, which I fucking
- 31:24Speaker 6: love that album. That's God.
- 31:25Speaker 2: I don't know that record.
- 31:27Speaker 6: Oh you don't know what has dead Man's Party, which
- 31:29Speaker 6: is awesome. Just Another Day is on that stay. It's incredible,
- 31:33Speaker 6: It's incredible.
- 31:33Speaker 2: You need that in life, all right? All right?
- 31:35Speaker 6: I think I don't think it was their last I
- 31:37Speaker 6: think it was like midway through. But for those who
- 31:39Speaker 6: don't know, Oingo Boingo is Danny Elfman's band from the eighties.
- 31:44Speaker 6: This like strange. How would you define them? They're like
- 31:47Speaker 6: an art pop kind of bands.
- 31:48Speaker 1: Exactly like in the world of Talking Heads, but weirder
- 31:51Speaker 1: and more more kind of dance oriented and just.
- 31:54Speaker 6: Even more so than Talking Heads.
- 31:56Speaker 1: Yeah, and weird Science is fantastic. I'm so pissed. I
- 31:59Speaker 1: didn't think of that. That movie is so so.
- 32:02Speaker 2: Huge in my in my formative years that I bombed.
- 32:04Speaker 4: I didn't think of that.
- 32:05Speaker 6: I picked up this really cool box set recently called
- 32:08Speaker 6: Life Moves Pretty Fast. It's like five records and it's
- 32:10Speaker 6: all the songs from John Hughes movies. So it's like
- 32:13Speaker 6: Ferris Bueller, Breakfast Club sixteen, everything wow, and including like
- 32:18Speaker 6: they famously never released an official soundtrack for Ferris Bueller,
- 32:21Speaker 6: which has a bunch of cool shit on it. So anyways,
- 32:24Speaker 6: shout out to that. All right, My next song here
- 32:26Speaker 6: is that thing you do, the theme to the nineteen
- 32:32Speaker 6: ninety six Tom Hanks film about the fictional band The Wonders.
- 32:37Speaker 6: This was written, of course by Adams slashing air. Debatable,
- 32:41Speaker 6: fountains of Wayne, Oh yeah, debatable, oh shit. All right,
- 32:47Speaker 6: So Mike Viola the great, one of the great voices
- 32:50Speaker 6: of all time. In my opinion, my humble opinion, Mike
- 32:52Speaker 6: Viola sings this song.
- 32:54Speaker 1: And had something it had something to do with the writing,
- 32:56Speaker 1: but it was incredit wasn't credited.
- 32:59Speaker 6: Totally, and there's some moments that totally feel like Mike
- 33:01Speaker 6: moments that.
- 33:02Speaker 1: Yeah, that songs great and thank you for reminding me
- 33:05Speaker 1: that I need to show my kids that movie, so
- 33:07Speaker 1: damn good. All right, guys, you're gonna want to hear
- 33:11Speaker 1: that convo with Zeth and I. It's some great theme
- 33:14Speaker 1: song recommendations over in the hollywood Land Rap Party, make
- 33:17Speaker 1: sure you're subscribe to hollywood Land and Apple podcasts, the
- 33:20Speaker 1: iHeartRadio app or wherever you get your podcasts. We're releasing
- 33:23Speaker 1: content over there. It's it's you know, it's music guys
- 33:26Speaker 1: talking about movies and true crime in Hollywood History, and
- 33:30Speaker 1: hollywood Land is helm by my partner in true crime,
- 33:34Speaker 1: Zeth Lundy. We got three episodes hitting every week over there,
- 33:38Speaker 1: and there's always a music connection to everything that we
- 33:41Speaker 1: talk about. To further fuel or as the manifestation I
- 33:45Speaker 1: should say, of the fuel that is our music in
- 33:49Speaker 1: movie fascination, Zeth and I have another podcast, a video
- 33:54Speaker 1: podcast exclusively video called This Film Should be Played Loud,
- 33:58Speaker 1: which looks at the greatest scores in soundtracks from music history.
- 34:03Speaker 1: The last one was on The Big Lebowski. The next
- 34:04Speaker 1: one is on High Fidelity. Go to disgrace lampod dot

- 34:19Speaker 1: All right, guys, let's play new song, old song. Speaking
- 34:23Speaker 1: of recommendations, the new song of the week recommendation. The
- 34:26Speaker 1: new song that I am recommending for old heads like
- 34:29Speaker 1: me is end of Beginning by Joe. That's DJO and
- 34:34Speaker 1: I'm not gonna Lie. I hated this song the first
- 34:37Speaker 1: time I heard it, but my kids wore me down.
- 34:40Speaker 2: They love it now.
- 34:41Speaker 1: My kids also love Harry Nilsen and Fugazi and Weird
- 34:44Speaker 1: Al and Mister Fantasy, so they got pretty great taste.
- 34:47Speaker 1: Joe the artist is also Steve from Stranger Things, the
- 34:52Speaker 1: actor Joe Keery. So this this recommendation makes perfect sense
- 34:55Speaker 1: for this week because of our Grace Jones episode. We're
- 34:58Speaker 1: talking about actors and who made the transition from acting
- 35:02Speaker 1: to music and vice versa. So Joe Djo end of beginning.
- 35:08Speaker 1: That is my new song recommendation for this week. The
- 35:12Speaker 1: old song that I'm recommending this week. Okay, the old
- 35:15Speaker 1: song is misunderstanding by Phil Collins for a couple reasons. One,
- 35:20Speaker 1: it was just announced that Phil Collins is going into
- 35:22Speaker 1: the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame this year. Two,
- 35:25Speaker 1: as lame as I thought Phil was as a kid,
- 35:27Speaker 1: I have late in life on set Phil Collins appreciation
- 35:30Speaker 1: disease and I love this damn song. I've probably listened
- 35:33Speaker 1: to this song more than any other single song in
- 35:35Speaker 1: the past twelve months, and that's saying something. Now listen,
- 35:38Speaker 1: I get it. Phil Collins is lame. Phil Collins is
- 35:41Speaker 1: shit that your math teacher listened to when he couldn't
- 35:43Speaker 1: find his lame ass. Jimmy Buffett CED's Phil Collins is
- 35:46Speaker 1: the dude who looks like your uncle Rick. If your
- 35:48Speaker 1: uncle Rick was even lamer than he already is. Phil
- 35:50Speaker 1: Collins was in Genesis, and the only thing lamer than
- 35:52Speaker 1: Genesis is Phil Collins. According to your twelve year old
- 35:56Speaker 1: MTV watching eyes, Phil Collins is even lamer than Peter Gabriel.
- 35:59Speaker 1: And that is no easy thing to do. But here's
- 36:01Speaker 1: the thing. What I'm saying, all these years later is
- 36:04Speaker 1: that Phil Collins is the shit, and this old song
- 36:08Speaker 1: needs to be listened to. With new years, new shit
- 36:11Speaker 1: has come to light. Dude, misunderstanding by Phil Collins, Give
- 36:15Speaker 1: it a spin. After end of beginning by Joe, got
- 36:17Speaker 1: a new song you want to recommend to me and
- 36:19Speaker 1: your fellow discos, how about an old song? Six one
- 36:22Speaker 1: seven nine oh six six six three eight, All right, listen,
- 36:25Speaker 1: Speaking of the Hall of Fame, the rock and roll
- 36:27Speaker 1: Hall of Fame, Zeth and I made some predictions and boy,
- 36:31Speaker 1: oh boy, it was a thing. And we get into
- 36:35Speaker 1: that in the exclusive section of this year after Party
- 36:37Speaker 1: coming up, go to disgrace slampod dot com to sign
- 36:39Speaker 1: up to become an all Access member. All right, guys,
- 36:42Speaker 1: we will be back right after this break. All right, guys,
- 36:58Speaker 1: we are back.

- 37:03Speaker 1: After Party. A lot of them are featured in Disgraceland

- 38:33Speaker 2: Together like you do. And well that's a disgrace.
- 38:36Speaker 1: Back on April eighth, nineteen eighty nine, the iconic Grace
- 38:41Speaker 1: Jones was arrested in Kingston, Jamaica. The Clampdown Baby. Here's
