- 0:08to the Simply Christ podcast hosted by Leon Martin, along
- 0:11with Aaron Keaton, Melvin Martin, Andrew Schrock and Dan
- 0:15Blatz. Let's get right to it.
- 0:18All right, here we are ready for another Bible study just like
- 0:22usual on a Monday night, 7:00. Well, here in Iowa it is 8:00
- 0:27for some of you early folks. All right, we're going to be in
- 0:32chapter 3 of Colossians tonight. Going to be starting in verse 5.
- 0:38But before we do that, I'll have Bellwood kick us off with a word
- 0:44of prayer. Let's pray.
- 0:46Father, we bless you tonight. We thank you that we have the
- 0:50opportunity to get together here in this way and look into Your
- 0:54Word. Father, guide us with Your Word
- 0:56for Your Spirit as we go through Your Word.
- 0:59And that your word is powerful, sharper than any 2 edged sword
- 1:05the the scriptures say. And so Father, we're going to
- 1:09stay in your word and help us to stay in context, Father.
- 1:13And that you could be edified and glorified.
- 1:17That I'm sorry we could be edified and you could be
- 1:19glorified because ultimately it's about you and it's not
- 1:23about us and what we have to say, but it's about you and your
- 1:28word and your Kingdom. We thank you for giving us your
- 1:31Son Jesus to redeem us with the blood and on the cross, and that
- 1:36we can put our faith in that and in that alone we thank you and
- 1:41glorify you in Jesus name, Amen. Amen.
- 1:45Amen. That's right.
- 1:48Yeah. So we'll get a running start
- 1:50here. But before we do that, I saw on
- 1:52Facebook that, well, Andrew Shrock, the Shrock's there in
- 1:56Ohio. They have their family camp that
- 1:59they have there or whatever they call it, I guess twice a year.
- 2:02And I saw he's doing some dirt work around there, putting in
- 2:06some pickleball courts. So Andrew, tell us about your
- 2:08event there. Yeah, it's coming right up and
- 2:12it'd be in in two weeks or a little less than two weeks if
- 2:17you want to. You want to join us for a great
- 2:20weekend of fellowship and just meet a bunch of godly families.
- 2:26That is always a good connections.
- 2:28A lot of good connections have been made through these camps
- 2:31where families that we barely know, but they know families
- 2:35that they met maybe in their area that they didn't know
- 2:37existed. And now they're they're back and
- 2:40forth. They have this fellowship.
- 2:42It's it's way I'm finding out it's way bigger than just people
- 2:46meeting here and having a great time.
- 2:49People meet each other here and then all of a sudden they're
- 2:51doing stuff where they're at and they're hanging out and finding
- 2:55out that there's a lot more like minded people around them than
- 2:58they realize. But for what we're doing here is
- 3:01just we're having time of just great fellowship.
- 3:06And I think we have 4 sessions of teaching and a lot of sitting
- 3:14around doing fellow shaping and getting to know each other.
- 3:18And also there's a lot of activities for the young people
- 3:21and also older people. So we put in a pickleball court,
- 3:26A2A double. So it it's, it makes for a great
- 3:32time of getting to know each other.
- 3:35If you don't, if you're, you want to get to know a young
- 3:39person, play a comparative game of volleyball or pickleball and
- 3:44you get to know if his he has his body in subjection or not.
- 3:49So we, we. So yeah, I people from all over
- 3:56the states join us and we have a great time.
- 3:58I don't know what else to say except I think you're missing
- 4:01out it don't join some of these. Yeah, it's it's a great time.
- 4:05There's basketball, there's volleyball, there's a water
- 4:07slide, there's going to be pickleball.
- 4:09I think there's, what do you call that disc golf baskets
- 4:13around there maybe too. But.
- 4:16Water slide didn't what's that? The water slide just you
- 4:22mentioned the water slide that has become a hit man for these
- 4:26kids. There's so many families that
- 4:29talk about where they go to events, but there's just really
- 4:32nothing for the 234510 year olds like a 2 year old.
- 4:39You should see their faces light up when they get on that water
- 4:41slide. I mean, it's just they jump out
- 4:43of the bottom of that thing and they just one bee line back up
- 4:47that hill. It's way more work than they
- 4:50would ever do working. But man, they just it's a steep
- 4:53hill and as soon as they're out at the bottom, some of them are
- 4:57already getting up before they stop to jump out to run back up
- 5:01the dude again. I mean, just on and on and on.
- 5:04So bringing up the water slide, I forgot that that, but that is
- 5:10very family friendly. And then there's the gaca ball.
- 5:14That's what they like. So there's activities for the
- 5:18very little ones and then there's a youth activities that
- 5:24the teenagers are gonna do. That flag thing again, I don't
- 5:28know if you're familiar with it. I'm not don't know enough about
- 5:31it to really say too much about it.
- 5:33But it's, I think four teams that team up with the young
- 5:36people and they have difficult challenges to overcome.
- 5:41They have to find they have to find hidden messages and they
- 5:46have to then interpret the message and find where the next
- 5:49clue. They find the clues and then
- 5:52that takes them to the to the next clue.
- 5:55And all four teams have to different clues to take them to
- 6:01this once final mystery where they're getting to.
- 6:07Well, whichever team wins, they get this great flag and it's a
- 6:11big deal. So that's where the youth and
- 6:15then there's also a race where they're running like AI, think
- 6:18it's like AI don't know how many.
- 6:21What do you see? Say they're like a 3K or
- 6:23whatever it is. Or 5K, Yeah.
- 6:27Yeah, a lot of stuff. Almost stuff.
- 6:33One thing that one thing that I really enjoyed about your camp,
- 6:36Andrew, is that it's not packed full of sessions and stuff where
- 6:40like there's plenty of time to fellowship and be able to visit
- 6:44with people and just organically things happen, you know, I,
- 6:48that's what I appreciate about. But some places you go, it's
- 6:52just like, you know, they have session after session that
- 6:55you're sitting in sessions all the time.
- 6:56And that's what I like about yours.
- 6:58It's more open, more family friendly.
- 7:02Yeah. We've been talking about it
- 7:05like, man, are we cramming too much stuff where it kind of
- 7:08takes that relaxing away 'cause I enjoy sitting down and
- 7:13fellowshipping with people and that's available.
- 7:15That's there for you to do. You don't have to participate in
- 7:19all the activities. If you would participate in all
- 7:22of the activities, you wouldn't have any relaxing.
- 7:26It's a lot of stuff planned. Where did that scoop noodle
- 7:29thing that that Leon started over there?
- 7:31That's contagious now. So now everybody's got to do it
- 7:34over here too now. So we got to do scooping.
- 7:38Oh, that's good. So.
- 7:41And, and, and the new one is we're doing 30 minutes before
- 7:46each session. One of the families from church
- 7:50really thought this would help a lot of young people and just
- 7:54people in general is they want at before each session a couple
- 7:59to share how they met and the whole thing, their little love
- 8:03story there. So again, it's just something
- 8:06that for those that are interested, it's no pressure for
- 8:08anyone to that's it like to be there, but just available for
- 8:11those that want. There you go.
- 8:15Sounds good. Stephanie.
- 8:17You can put the link to Andrew's website or the registration
- 8:21form, Facebook, whatever there it is in the comments.
- 8:25So if you want to register, there's usually a couple 300
- 8:28people there. So good time.
- 8:31Central Ohio kind of would be the location close.
- 8:35You can click that link and see the details there.
- 8:38All righty, thanks for that, Andrew.
- 8:41It's been a real blessing for us.
- 8:42We've been there many times and the kids always look forward to
- 8:45it as their parents do as well. All right, chapter 3,
- 8:50Colossians, let's get in the word.
- 8:52Verse 5 says mortify. Therefore, your members which
- 8:57are upon the earth, fornication, uncleanness, inordinate
- 9:01affection, evil, concupiscence and covetousness, which is
- 9:07idolatry, for which things sake the wrath of God cometh on the
- 9:14children of disobedience in the which ye also walked sometime
- 9:19when ye lived in them. That is the full sentence.
- 9:23You can comment on just verse 5 Dad, if you want, but we were
- 9:28talking a little bit before, but a lot of people will read this
- 9:33mortify as put to death. But if you if you are critical
- 9:38of the context here, you will notice that 2 verses prior to
- 9:42this in verse three, he said for ye are dead.
- 9:47So let's talk to our listeners about what that it what how that
- 9:52could be that we are called dead and yet he calls us to mortify
- 9:57therefore our members which are upon the earth and we didn't
- 10:02script this. This is I'm I'm looking forward
- 10:04to hearing each one of uses. Idea of how that goes?
- 10:08Yeah, so the context of Colossians in chapter 2 in
- 10:12particular, he told us not to allow philosophy or vain deceit
- 10:17to rob us, to cheat us of our reward, voluntary humility and
- 10:23neglecting of the body, a touch, not taste, not handle, not style
- 10:27of Christianity. So the the idea even behind
- 10:31false teaching like that is how do we stop sinning?
- 10:35How do we stop giving into this body of flesh?
- 10:39Some would respond to the criticism of the touch, not
- 10:42taste, not handle, not concept and then say we don't need to
- 10:45worry about what we touch or what we taste or what we handle.
- 10:48That should even be our concern. We're we're free.
- 10:50We are, you know, spirit filled as we can do whatever we want.
- 10:53All things are lawful and they have that mentality where they
- 10:56use the grace of God as Lasilia, as the book of Jude warns
- 11:00against and here he's teaching us now.
- 11:03So if we're not supposed to live based on a touch, not taste, not
- 11:07handle, not type of Christianity, if we're not using
- 11:11principle based concepts to control our flesh and to neglect
- 11:16this the drives of the flesh, how then do we as Christians, we
- 11:20claim that we have superior teaching, How then do we walk
- 11:24free from the lust of the flesh? Cause clearly we ought not to be
- 11:27walking after the flesh. And so he gives us the theology
- 11:31behind why we're free and how we're free.
- 11:35He tells us a truth about us that seems contradictory to our
- 11:39life, to our existence, to our realities.
- 11:42This concept, like he explains in Romans chapter 6 very
- 11:45extensively here he just touches on it a little bit.
- 11:48He says if you're risen with Christ, then seek those things
- 11:52which are above. Why as though living in the
- 11:55world are you subject to ordinance?
- 11:56He said in the previous verse, this set your affection on
- 11:59things above where Christ is. Seek out the right hand of God,
- 12:02for ye are dead. So this is this is the starting
- 12:06point of freedom from sin. Some people don't like it
- 12:09because it doesn't give them something to do.
- 12:11And so when it gets to this mortify, people jump on that
- 12:15because it feels like, ah, here we go now I can do something.
- 12:19And instead of reveling in and enjoying the grace of God and
- 12:23the freedom of sin that we have through Christ, they turn verse
- 12:275 right back into Colossians 2 and touch not, taste not, handle
- 12:31not. And they do it by trying to put
- 12:33to death their own body, when the context has been abundantly
- 12:37clear. For ye are dead, and your life
- 12:41is hid with Christ and God. Start there.
- 12:44Recognize that your body and all of its drives and lusts.
- 12:47We talked about this so many times already.
- 12:49Galatians says that our flesh with its affections and lusts
- 12:53has been crucified. And so start at that point, if
- 12:57you're understanding that concept, I have been crucified,
- 13:00I was baptized into him, I was buried with him, I was raised
- 13:03with him. I'm seated together with Christ
- 13:05in heavenly places. So when it says mortify,
- 13:08therefore your members, what's he saying?
- 13:10Is he telling us like all the modern translations would say,
- 13:13put to death, therefore your members?
- 13:16I can understand the desire because let's say a temptation
- 13:19to lust comes along and you want that thing to be dead.
- 13:24But instead of reckoning like Romans 6 says, reckoning, hey,
- 13:27my body is dead. The members have been crucified
- 13:30and its affections and lusts have been crucified.
- 13:33Instead it feels like, OK, then here's something I can do.
- 13:36I can fight against it. I can fast, I can pray, I can
- 13:39cold shower. I can do all these things to put
- 13:42to death my members when the text says clear, clearly mortify
- 13:49the way that you would treat a dead body.
- 13:51Like my hand is no longer alive to stealing.
- 13:55My eyes are no longer alive to lusting.
- 13:57I'm going to treat them as a mortician might treat them.
- 14:00I'm not going to be putting things to death in the morgue.
- 14:04I'm going to be dealing with something that's already dead
- 14:07and gone. So much more can be said.
- 14:10There's a couple passages that I know Melvin, I mean Leanne had
- 14:14already mentioned two different places where this word is
- 14:17translated from, but I'm sure the other guys will likely
- 14:19mention those. Edra.
- 14:26Yeah, this is, like you already said, a place where we finally
- 14:32feel like we get guidance of how to subdue this whole body and
- 14:36how to justify our evil actions. You know, I just didn't die
- 14:42enough today. I need to work on that.
- 14:45And that's not what he's saying. But he he is telling you what to
- 14:51do, though. He is telling you something that
- 14:53you can do. And that is to based on the fact
- 14:56that your reality in the spiritual realm in heavenly
- 15:01places is that you're there by faith and the old man is
- 15:08circumcised off of you. It's dead, it's cut off, it's
- 15:12buried, it's gone and it's destroyed.
- 15:15The body of sin is destroyed by the death of Jesus Christ.
- 15:19When Christ died, we died with him.
- 15:22And that destroyed the body, this flesh of sin, it destroyed
- 15:25it. And based on that reality and
- 15:28that authority, he's saying we're free from sin.
- 15:33We're dead to sin and now we have something that is better
- 15:38than the law. Remember the law was weak.
- 15:41It couldn't make the commerce perfect.
- 15:44It fell short. Now he's saying we have
- 15:47something that didn't fall short.
- 15:49There's someone that without spot was offered to God and he
- 15:54perfected forever them that are sanctified.
- 15:57And in perfecting us, He also dealt with this old man, the
- 16:01flesh. Well, now he's telling us, if
- 16:03you want to do something, believe that.
- 16:06Believe that you are dead. When sin pops up, don't allow
- 16:10it. Neutralize it based on the
- 16:13authority that you are dead. So it's like kill it with the
- 16:19authority of being dead. It makes sense, it sounds
- 16:23contradictory, but it's not. If, how could I say this?
- 16:30The only reason that we're still allowing sin in our lives is
- 16:33because we don't. We're not living and believing
- 16:36the authority and the reality that's happened on the cross
- 16:392000 years ago, and instead we're always trying to get Jesus
- 16:43Christ to stand up. You don't remember how many sat
- 16:45down on the right hand of God. It's because it was done.
- 16:48A full victory was done to reconcile us back to God and to
- 16:51seat us in heavenly places and He crucified the flesh.
- 16:55It's done the challenge for us until the day of redemption,
- 16:59until we will be changed like First Corinthians 15 says, we
- 17:02will all be changed in the moment, in the twinkly of an
- 17:04eye. But until then, we can be
- 17:07changed according to our faith. And that's the challenge we
- 17:11don't like. We don't.
- 17:12We want God to just do something.
- 17:15Well, he already did something and asking us to believe it.
- 17:17And the more we believe it, the more that you believe that you
- 17:20are dead when sin, when temptation pops up and you're
- 17:23wanting to have a bad attitude. He lists a whole list of sins
- 17:26there, and we like to just pick them out and.
- 17:29Go, oh, I don't do that. I'm not going to do that and I'm
- 17:31going to put myself the desk to that, but I've learned that it's
- 17:36way deeper than that. The law was trying to deal with
- 17:40individual like what we call the big sense.
- 17:43But I'm telling you, when you're led by the spread and you have
- 17:45the love of God and the appreciation of Jesus Christ in
- 17:48you, you nail down these bad negative attitudes in the
- 17:53family. You don't allow it.
- 17:56In my family, there's more disciplines when it comes to
- 17:59attitude than anything. Their perspective, the way they
- 18:02think, the way they respond to their siblings, the way like how
- 18:07they. Yeah, their attitude, if they're
- 18:10negative, if they're there's downcast or beat up.
- 18:12We don't do this belittling thing.
- 18:16All things that are not lost, that are not written and why am
- 18:19I saying this is to help us understand that being
- 18:24spiritually minded and led by the Spirit is far greater than
- 18:27some law. And that is what Jesus Christ is
- 18:29trying to tell us is that the old man, the flesh is done away.
- 18:34Walk in the Spirit and be this new creature, this heavenly
- 18:39mindset, this guy that sets his affections and thinks about
- 18:42things that are pure. If there's any good thing to
- 18:44think on, think of those things that are pure.
- 18:46Think of the things that are. Just don't allow this negative
- 18:50atmosphere in your home that will destroy families.
- 18:53It's just not good. Yes, Don't lie, don't steal,
- 18:57don't kill, don't do all these things, all the sins that were
- 19:00listed there. You are free from it, but I
- 19:03don't want to focus in on I see so many Christian families
- 19:05wondering why their kids are there's no joy in there and
- 19:08there's no happiness in the families because you allow a
- 19:10whole bunch of this negative beat down atmosphere in your
- 19:15home and it's just not edifying. You're all miserable and you
- 19:20just think more complaining it's going to somehow make it better
- 19:23No and somebody needs to just stand up and say that's it.
- 19:26We're not having this negative attitude and if I see that
- 19:29coming again, there's going to be consequences.
- 19:31We're we're going to be families that won't tolerate this
- 19:35negative, belittling, shaming, none of that.
- 19:39We're going to walk in the victory.
- 19:41That doesn't mean that one you. I also don't like this idea of
- 19:44like, oh, your kids can't do anything wrong.
- 19:47Like, oh, you're so sweet. You try.
- 19:49I mean, call something good that is not good.
- 19:52I'm brutally honest with my family where people will be
- 19:55like, oh man, that guy's just rude.
- 19:56But you know what? This world is rough and I want
- 19:59my kids to be able to go wherever they go and if they
- 20:02don't perform, they know that they're going to have
- 20:05consequences. If they get old and they go work
- 20:08for somebody and they don't do it the way they're supposed to,
- 20:11they're going to get yelled at. Why can't I train them that way
- 20:14right now that not by yet. I'm not yelling at them, but
- 20:19let's train up our children in a way that is when they go work
- 20:22for somebody, they go like, man, where can we can find more kids
- 20:26like this? And it's.
- 20:28Possible when we believe the gospel, when we believe that we
- 20:32are dead to all sin and we don't have this works minded mindset
- 20:36where we're picking and choosing these little sins and then say,
- 20:39oh, we're going to attack this one.
- 20:41I don't know. I'll be going.
- 20:42It's. A good path.
- 20:45You're all though Velvet well. To me, there's there's a couple
- 20:50issues that come into play when we look at these verses like
- 20:55this and we try and say that we're going to have to somehow
- 20:59dead in our flesh or kill or mortify our flesh that we have
- 21:04to do that because there's one of the issues is, is this is
- 21:09that how do you know if you're dead?
- 21:10Like how do you know when you when you're trying to mortify or
- 21:14trying to kill your flesh or be dead to whatever it is lost or
- 21:19whatever you're dealing with, How do you know when you're
- 21:21dead? Are you going to check your
- 21:23pulse or I mean, how do you know?
- 21:27Well, Christ already has done this for us, right?
- 21:30And so to me, it's much safer to reckon ourselves or to believe
- 21:36that by faith, like you were saying, Andrew, it, it's a faith
- 21:40issue, right? And so another thing that came
- 21:42to my mind that if we're trying to kill ourselves, that's like
- 21:48suicide, right? I mean, why are you, why are you
- 21:51trying to somehow dead in your flesh?
- 21:54And so there's 2 verses or a few verses I would like to read that
- 21:59really kind of point this out. Because the simple fact is, is
- 22:04that if we think that we have to somehow put our flesh to death,
- 22:09that we have to do that, then all these verses don't mean
- 22:15anything. Like in Romans 66 where he says,
- 22:18knowing this, that our old man is crucified with him and that
- 22:22the body of sin might be destroyed, that henceforth we
- 22:26should not serve sin. For he that is dead is freed
- 22:30from sin. So a verse like that, it can't
- 22:33be true, right? If I think I have to somehow
- 22:37mortify my flesh or or or make it dead, when indeed Christ has
- 22:42done that for us, and then 813. I like what it says there.
- 22:47Romans 813 it says, For if we live after the flesh, ye shall
- 22:50die, but if ye through the Spirit do mortify the deeds of
- 22:55the body, ye shall live. For as many as are led by the
- 22:59Spirit of God, they are the sons of God.
- 23:02So if we are believing in the finished work of Christ and that
- 23:08Christ has indeed we are crucified with Christ, if we
- 23:12believe that, then we are actually being led by the
- 23:15Spirit, right? And but that's the whole issue I
- 23:19guess that I see is that it's just whether we're walking in
- 23:23the Spirit or we're walking in the flesh or we're walking by
- 23:27faith. Not necessarily that I'm trying
- 23:30to somehow kill my flesh or mortify my flesh somehow,
- 23:35because that already has been done obviously.
- 23:38Or the verses that we read previously in the three and four
- 23:41two chat or two verses back would not be true either.
- 23:44So yeah, yeah, that's that's right.
- 23:49Dan mentioned a couple other verses that I don't know if this
- 23:52will bless everybody, but for somebody that's that likes the
- 23:56words at the meeting of them. If you look at the the Greek
- 23:59word that this word mortify was it was derived from the Greek
- 24:04word is necru and it is used three times in the Bible and the
- 24:10other two times the phrase that it that they used when they
- 24:14selected the English word to use use is now dead.
- 24:20And that's in Romans 419 says, and being not weak in faith, he
- 24:25considered that not his own body now dead when he was 100 years
- 24:29old. And the other one is in Hebrews
- 24:3211/12 where it says therefore sprang there even of 1 and him
- 24:36talking about Abraham as well and him as good as dead.
- 24:41And those are the, those are the only three places that this
- 24:44Greek word is used. And then the third place of
- 24:46course is here in Colossians where it's uses the word
- 24:48mortified. So you could deduct even by
- 24:51those two, both of those are a past tense death, you know what
- 24:58I mean? So I, I think it's pretty clear
- 25:02that it that it's not asking us to put to death, it is asking us
- 25:06to render useless that which has been put to death, right.
- 25:11In other words, count it useless.
- 25:13Don't, don't. We're.
- 25:14Looking to those members for the strength to overcome this sin.
- 25:18Don't go there because that's not where your victory is.
- 25:21The victory lies in the blood of Jesus and his promise to us
- 25:25through Christ. That's where the victory is.
- 25:28Yeah. I just.
- 25:29I just thought that was interesting that that it's not.
- 25:32It's clearly not put to death, which is what almost everybody
- 25:36would treat it as, yeah. You said that really well.
- 25:41Go ahead. Yeah, that was very well.
- 25:46Yeah, that was the that was I think you hit the I think you
- 25:49hit the thing that is the confusion.
- 25:52You cleared it up. I don't know if you meant to do
- 25:53that, but that was really good is to count it useless.
- 25:57That's what it's saying like follow through with the idea
- 26:01that you're dead. Follow through with it.
- 26:03Act on that, act on it. Don't just say it or whatever.
- 26:09Don't try to die. No act on that deadness.
- 26:12Like when when the thing wants to pop up and you act on it
- 26:16like, no, I'm dead to that. I'm free from it.
- 26:18Jesus Christ made me free from it.
- 26:20You're acting on it. And I would just like I was just
- 26:23going to say it one more thing. Most people will then ask
- 26:27questions like, well, does this work for you?
- 26:29So you're saying you don't sin anymore.
- 26:33I'm ready to say that's besides, why do you ask?
- 26:36You have a better plan. You just are looking for ways
- 26:39and disagree with God like this is God's plan.
- 26:44If you want to try something else, go for it.
- 26:46But you will not be doing it God's way and you will not be
- 26:49following God's wisdom. It'll be man's wisdom and your
- 26:53own at that point. But no, go knock yourself out.
- 26:55God is like that. He will let you go do something
- 26:58stupid. But if you want to do it God's
- 27:01way, believe that you're dead. I think probably where a lot of
- 27:05the confusion comes in is a failure to recognize flesh as
- 27:09flesh and members as part of the flesh, because this book, this
- 27:13passage here says that our members ought to be mortified.
- 27:17And so we look at our members, and members in the Bible are
- 27:21always hands, nose, mouth, you know, sex organs.
- 27:24Those are our members. And they are clearly when we
- 27:27look at them, everybody knows they're not dead.
- 27:29And so then they reinterpret all the dead passages as something
- 27:33alternative. It's not the flesh, it's some
- 27:36spiritual reality. So based on your spiritual
- 27:40death, now you need to try to apply it to physical realities
- 27:44and pretend or act like or try to put to death like the spirits
- 27:48been put to death like this. It gets a really jumbled mess.
- 27:51But we've gone through all the passages so we don't need to
- 27:53reiterate them. And, and Melvin just read some
- 27:55of them again, knowing this, that our old man is crucified,
- 27:59that the body of sin might be destroyed, that you shouldn't
- 28:01live after the flesh, flesh body of sin, old man, it's all one in
- 28:05the same. And so your members are the
- 28:08things that want to lead you back into sin, the things that
- 28:11you want to touch, that you want to taste, that you want to put
- 28:14in your mouth, that you want to, you know, copulate with all
- 28:17those things are our members and now we're supposed to treat them
- 28:21as render them as useless. And I think again, we're one of
- 28:26the confusing things comes in and Melvin quoted this too is
- 28:29Romans 813 where it says mortify the deeds of the body.
- 28:33That's a different Greek word. And if you look other places
- 28:36where it's translated like Matthew 10/21, it says be put to
- 28:42death. And so they feel like it's a
- 28:44valid interpretation of valid translation to be rendered or to
- 28:48be put to death. And I was telling Leon this
- 28:51before. In German, the Greek, the the
- 28:54word for murder or kill is mort. And in English we get our word
- 29:00murder from that same root word. So there is some valid reasoning
- 29:05behind mortifying something is to like render it useless,
- 29:08render it dead, to put it to nothing.
- 29:11And so there is that concept. But within the context both in
- 29:15Romans 8 he and here in Colossians 2 and Romans 6, he's
- 29:18telling us the body has been dead, has been crucified, is
- 29:23dead now, therefore now treating.
- 29:26I think the reason why King James translators use the word
- 29:29mortify was for that exact reason.
- 29:31So when your members hands, nose, mouth, sex organs want to
- 29:35do things contrary to the spirit, render them useless,
- 29:39treat them as good as dead, right?
- 29:42Like we have the exact opposite challenge of what Abraham had.
- 29:45Abraham felt dead, his body was as good as dead and he was
- 29:49supposed to count it alive and able to produce seed.
- 29:53We have a a live body ready and willing to sin and we're
- 29:57supposed to count it as dead and unable to sin.
- 29:59Slaves to to righteousness, right?
- 30:01So the concept is the same. Count something the opposite of
- 30:06what it is. That's right.
- 30:07Amen. I like that.
- 30:08That's, that's a good point. I think that's good, Dan.
- 30:11Oh, that, that's really good. Another thing, another thing I
- 30:15would like to, I just got one more thing.
- 30:18I would like to say that a question is, do you really want
- 30:23the responsibility of putting off the old man?
- 30:27Is that what you want? Like do you think that that's
- 30:30going to work out for you? Like you want to go to heaven
- 30:34and go to God and say, you know what?
- 30:36I put off the old man. You're going to go up there and
- 30:39disagree with him right in his face and say, I put off the old
- 30:43man just like you told me. And then God's going to have to
- 30:46say, you know what? Actually, I did that.
- 30:48You know, I put off the old man. I crucified.
- 30:51I'm the one that died. You didn't die.
- 30:54Do you really want that responsibility?
- 30:56Think about when you stop and think about it, you don't want
- 30:58that responsibility. Stop bragging about it like you
- 31:00can do this and that. You're going to.
- 31:02It's such a spiritual, godly thing.
- 31:04It's actually quite arrogant, yeah.
- 31:10That's right. All right.
- 31:13So verse 6 we haven't. Yeah, I was just going to say we
- 31:16haven't touched any of the actual sins yet, right?
- 31:19Fornication, uncleanness and all that.
- 31:22Yeah, is is anyone want to talk about any of that or the
- 31:25remainder of this sentence which would be verse six and seven for
- 31:30which things sake the wrath of God cometh all the children of
- 31:32disobedience in the which he also walked sometime when you
- 31:37lived in them. Yeah, that any other?
- 31:40I think it it is well worth our time probably to just expand and
- 31:44expound on some of these particular sins.
- 31:47Fornication is a like a junk drawer for all types of sexually
- 31:52illicit sins. Anything that says outside of
- 31:54the covenant of marriage, if you're using your members for
- 31:58sex with your eyes or with your body parts, you are in
- 32:02fornication apart from the the sanctified redeemed covenant of
- 32:09marriage, right? That's where fornication is, is
- 32:12completely. I mean, it's not fornication
- 32:14then. So fornication includes all of
- 32:16that premarital sex and pornography and the masturbation
- 32:19seems to fit in there and adultery and the list goes on.
- 32:22And uncleanness seems like it's an expansion of that same type
- 32:26of sin, right? It's still this illicit sexual
- 32:30use a lot of times or uncleanness was in in reference
- 32:33to idol worship in the Old Testament, which and then
- 32:39inordinate affection. I wouldn't mind hearing from
- 32:41Andrew. I know last time he expanded on
- 32:43an inordinate affection a fair bit already.
- 32:48Yeah. Go ahead, Andrew, with any
- 32:50thoughts on it. Yeah, I also wanted to talk
- 32:54about fornication. In the Bible, he uses the word
- 32:57fornication in the light of sexual immorality, but he also
- 33:02uses it as far as children of Israel go on a horn after other
- 33:07gods, after other leaders, after other things.
- 33:11And he calls it fornication that they're fornicating their their
- 33:14fornication just kept rising up and to the point where God's
- 33:18anger and wrath was well over. So I think that's what he's
- 33:22saying. Like you were at one point the
- 33:25children that experienced the wrath of God in all their
- 33:30uncleanness and their fornication going after other
- 33:33gods. You were that.
- 33:35Why are you now? You're acting like those that
- 33:39you were, you know, act your age.
- 33:45You've been redeemed, you've been crucified.
- 33:48You've been made free from sin. Put this away.
- 33:51You were darkness. You're now light.
- 33:54Walk as children of light. Stop still representing your
- 33:58past. Stop still representing unbelief
- 34:02represent belief, faith in God and have a change life.
- 34:07Don't be enticed with uncleanness, but you're no
- 34:09longer in that camp. You're no longer in the camp of
- 34:13darkness. Walk in who you are now
- 34:16righteousness. Stop living the old life you
- 34:19were that you're not now and he's not telling.
- 34:23He's not losing confidence in the finished work of Jesus
- 34:25Christ here. Many people will teach it in
- 34:28that way of like you know what we're all reading.
- 34:30Isn't that good news? But look here, it's time we deal
- 34:34with sin. You know what he's saying when
- 34:36you're just acting out of character when you're sinning as
- 34:39a believer. It doesn't make sense and you're
- 34:42doing the thing that the wrath of God comes on the children of
- 34:46disobedience. You were that don't do it now
- 34:49and for an occasion and uncleanness and in order and
- 34:52affection you can have. I don't know.
- 34:55There's, you know, there's such a broad blanket like in order
- 34:59and affection. Homosexuality is a strong
- 35:05inordinate affection. It's out of order.
- 35:08It's it's horrible child children.
- 35:13Like pedophilia is inordinate affection to its highest level,
- 35:21to the point where God says if somebody does that, the best
- 35:26thing to do a rope and a brick and some water, that'll take
- 35:31care of that problem. And I think we need to do that
- 35:33again. I think that should be the
- 35:35American law, that if you mess with a child, you get dunked and
- 35:40you don't come back, you become shark food.
- 35:43And the, the reason is, is that we have all these bad marriages.
- 35:47Why? Because these children were
- 35:49molested when they were young and now they're married and they
- 35:53hate their spouse because to them they're reliving rape every
- 35:58time he wants to Make Love. That hate that they have towards
- 36:02their predator gets turned right directly to their spouse and
- 36:06it's hell on earth for that couple.
- 36:09And it's we we have to be get more vocal about this.
- 36:15We don't like to talk about these inordinate, unclean,
- 36:18secret sexual immorality that happens with children in these,
- 36:22some of these very conservative, religious and everywhere.
- 36:26It's just happening and we have to speak out about it.
- 36:30It has to be addressed because it's not doing us any favors.
- 36:33Those people need to be imprisoned, which is the highest
- 36:36level you can do in America without going to jail.
- 36:39I'm pretty sure if I would find a pedophile in the act and I'd
- 36:41go drown him, I'd probably go to jail.
- 36:43So I don't want to do that. I don't want to go to jail, but
- 36:45that's what needs to happen. But the best we can do is get
- 36:48him locked up and when that needs to happen.
- 36:51I was just talking today about a guy.
- 36:54She hates him when it comes to sex.
- 36:57She can't do it and she was molested when she was young.
- 37:02If you've been molested, deal with it before you get married.
- 37:08Get your victory and become clean in Christ Jesus.
- 37:11Believe that you're circumcised with the circumcision made out
- 37:14mate without hands. You feel unclean, you feel
- 37:17scared, you feel violated. That old body was cut off and is
- 37:23buried in the sea. It's like in a dead Egyptian.
- 37:27And you can view yourself clean, perfect, purified, unblameable,
- 37:32unreprovable before God. That's God's view of you as a
- 37:36believer. Stop feeling dirty, stop feeling
- 37:40unclean, and embrace your husband if you're married.
- 37:44If you're not married, get a grip before you.
- 37:46Don't. Don't lie about it.
- 37:49Don't withhold it. It destroys families.
- 37:52I know that's kind of off topic, but it's such a thing that we
- 37:56don't talk about and it's just a whole list of this sins is get
- 38:02get a grip that you are now light.
- 38:04The victory is 1. You are dead.
- 38:06Put these off. Don't act like you did prior.
- 38:11Yeah, that's right, says evil concupiscence.
- 38:16That basically just means more of the same kind of what you
- 38:19were already saying just, you know, unlawful or irregular,
- 38:24irregular desire of sexual pleasure.
- 38:28Looked it up. That's you know, so it fits
- 38:30right along with that. Then course covetousness, that
- 38:33could be a sexual as well. I think it's broader than that
- 38:36in general, but definitely, definitely includes that.
- 38:42All of which is idolatry. And so it's, it's a serious
- 38:47thing and it's not something that, you know, it lists these
- 38:51things here. The context isn't to point out
- 38:53these sins necessarily. The context is on how we would
- 38:56overcome these sins. You know, that that's what he,
- 39:00what he's talking about is how that we escape these, that these
- 39:03sins. That's what he's talking about.
- 39:07But he's asking us. To put how far do you want to go
- 39:08with this? Oh, sorry, how far do you want
- 39:11to go with this in order and affection thing?
- 39:14I I would go as far as to say it's when you're married and
- 39:18your wife has to have these lady meeting things.
- 39:21That's an inorder affection. When she needs a support group
- 39:24of women to be her to go out and to have to somehow cope with her
- 39:29family. She needs that if she needs that
- 39:33woman of like that. There's these women's power
- 39:38empowerment groups. There's these things that, you
- 39:40know, the women just think they need each other in order to cope
- 39:42with their family. That's an inordinate affection
- 39:45in my mind. I know that it's going to step
- 39:47up a lot of toes, but you need to be resolved in the finished
- 39:51work of Jesus Christ and your husband.
- 39:54Anything out of that I think is an inordinate affection because
- 39:59you think it's pure and innocent and it's helping your marriage
- 40:01and stuff, but it's I don't think it is.
- 40:04You're getting emotional support, emotional, you're
- 40:07drawing out emotional and a mindset from these groups away
- 40:12from your husband. He's not there and you bring
- 40:16that home and your family. It's it's not it's not good.
- 40:20And the same way with men like the guys have these have these
- 40:23guy things. I just don't do it.
- 40:25I it's me and my wife. We're one and it's me and my
- 40:30wife and Jesus Christ and the church.
- 40:32And I don't know what more I need.
- 40:34Like if I need to be influenced by some other men to somehow
- 40:38figure out I, I feel like there's a lot more problems.
- 40:41So I think a lot of those little group things are not really
- 40:45helping us. I think it's another form of
- 40:47that inordinate affection where you're not resolved in your
- 40:51family. Now you can shoot that down if
- 40:54you want, or balance it out or balance it out, you know.
- 41:03Mel would go ahead with what if you had it resolved, Yeah.
- 41:07Dan is speaking. I think, yeah, Dan.
- 41:09You go ahead, Melvin. All right, I, I was just
- 41:13thinking about that, that, yeah, I, I agree what you're saying to
- 41:16some degree, Andrew, I would say that I think depends on
- 41:21obviously the context. I mean, so I think of maybe like
- 41:25a verse that comes to my mind is a verse where it talks about,
- 41:29you know, iron sharpening iron, I think where men have the
- 41:37ability to sharpen one another, where I don't know that your
- 41:42wife can sharpen you in that way.
- 41:44And so I guess that'd be one of the things that comes to my mind
- 41:47that I would kind of push back on something like that.
- 41:49But I think where there is a group like of men or women,
- 41:54where in that group? If you are.
- 41:58Talking about your wife in a negative way or your husband any
- 42:03negative way, then that is a problem in my mind.
- 42:07And that's not the way it should be because men shouldn't be
- 42:12getting together and, you know, crying on each other's shoulders
- 42:15about their wives necessarily or women vice versa.
- 42:21But I do think I don't know if they, if we could put all of
- 42:25that in that same box, I guess is kind of the pushback I would
- 42:30put on that. I, I, I don't know, but that's
- 42:33just my thought on it. Deb very valid.
- 42:37I was going to say that this whole list of sins, fornication,
- 42:41uncleanness, inordinate affection, evil, concupiscence,
- 42:45they all seem to be trending towards this debauched,
- 42:49irregular, disorderly, disorderly, immoderate way of
- 42:54using their drives and their lusts.
- 42:56So not limited to certain rules or regulations, just doing
- 43:00whatever I want. Unusual, you know, no usual
- 43:03bounds, no way of stopping something, excessive drive for
- 43:07things that are not allowed. I saw a one definition.
- 43:10Romans 126 says vile affections. Even their women did change the
- 43:16natural use. You know, like that's a vile
- 43:18affection. That's a disordered way of
- 43:20thinking. That's not the way that your
- 43:22body was made to be. It's an inordinate affection and
- 43:26it's there's another one that says that a little bit of quote
- 43:31it now without natural affection, Paul says and
- 43:34Timothy, I believe so that one to me is much more where women
- 43:37don't have a lot of the natural affection they should have to
- 43:40their husband and to their children, but they'll go out and
- 43:42be affectionate with their sisters groups and their Bible
- 43:45study groups. I totally understand that.
- 43:47But to me the context here is probably a little bit more in
- 43:50the vein of this illicit Dr. and and misuse of your bodily
- 43:55functions and things like that, right?
- 43:57But. I guess one of the things that
- 43:59would give you that clue and that kind of stood out to me was
- 44:02on the end there of our six where it says which is idolatry.
- 44:08And so in my mind, like if something is idolatry, it's
- 44:12something that you're putting in front of God or in front of
- 44:16Jesus. And so it's pretty extreme,
- 44:19right? I mean, but it, it, it just that
- 44:23just really stood out to me that these things are actually
- 44:27considered as idolatry. I noticed both of you, Melvin
- 44:31and Leon, both said that all of these things are adultery.
- 44:34I've always just connected idolatry to the last one.
- 44:37Covetousness, because covetousness is is almost like
- 44:40worshipping something, right? Wanting something you don't
- 44:43have, longing for that thing. But are you guys saying that all
- 44:47of those things together are all covet, are all idolatry?
- 44:50Or is it just covetousness which is idolatry?
- 44:54I would have put it in as one, I guess, but I guess that's just
- 45:01what I would not because in my mind, like fornication and
- 45:06inordinate affection and evil concussions is if it is a deep
- 45:11sexual desire or, you know, outside of marriage and and
- 45:15outside of the context of marriage, then it's like, in
- 45:19other words, it's almost like idolatry in my mind.
- 45:21But that's a I'm going to have to think about that when I would
- 45:24have lumped it all together, I guess, in my mind.
- 45:28But. Yeah, that, that's a good
- 45:30question because if you read the, if you read it the way it
- 45:33says, it says which is, which is singular idolatry.
- 45:39So if it would be all of them, it would say which are idolatry.
- 45:43I think, you know, so, so textual textually, yes, in a
- 45:50sense, I guess. And I said it that, that, you
- 45:54know, it comes under the flies, under the flag of idolatry.
- 45:57I I'm kind of with Melvin on that.
- 45:59You know, I would, I would almost put it, put them all in
- 46:01there to some degree because you're, you're discounting
- 46:06Christ and your accounting, your natural affections, you know, so
- 46:09it's the sin itself is something that you're chasing rather than
- 46:14Christ. But yeah, that's a stretch as
- 46:16far as the actual text goes. Yep.
- 46:19And thanks for bringing that out, Dad.
- 46:21I appreciate that. So I got more thoughts on what I
- 46:26was trying to say earlier about the groups.
- 46:29There's clearly a place for the women, elderly women to teach
- 46:32the younger and the men. Like we got our role models.
- 46:36I don't want to knock that. It was just really annoying me
- 46:39and it would fall, I think, in the in the category of what you
- 46:42guys are saying here is if my wife was constantly texting and
- 46:46like, who you texting? Oh, there's this guy that he
- 46:48means like we're just friends, but he he has he helps me a lot
- 46:54and you know, he kind of, you know, the opposite sex and also
- 46:58women like they're just constantly texting and texting
- 47:00and texting and they get emotionally involved.
- 47:04That's kind of what I'm I see that happening a lot.
- 47:06Well, so and so said this and when are you going to Take Me
- 47:09Out for some flowers? This guy just did that and man,
- 47:13it was just so sweet and they try to guilt trip you into doing
- 47:16what other people did. That's I think that form of
- 47:20inorgan affection and idolatry because she's texting like even
- 47:25the young people, I don't think it's healthy for the young
- 47:28people to be constantly texting the opposite sex.
- 47:32You say it's innocent. Most of the young people say
- 47:34it's innocent, but I don't care who you are, if you're a male or
- 47:38a female, you got a text from the opposite sex and some chick
- 47:42or some dude. If you're a girl or whatever,
- 47:44there's something that goes on in your emotions that it's not
- 47:49quite innocent. Maybe it's something that you
- 47:51can enjoy while you're single. To a certain extent.
- 47:54I get that, but there's a lot of baggage and bondage that I just
- 47:59want to put my finger on there. That will carry in a lot of
- 48:02times into marriage unless you really address it.
- 48:05Then if you're just so comfortable communicating and
- 48:08texting and having these relationships with all these
- 48:12people opposite sex while you're single, and then also carry that
- 48:17into your marriage, I think it's it's a form of idolatry.
- 48:21And that's kind of what I was trying to say.
- 48:22Yeah, I thought. Yeah, go, go ahead.
- 48:27Sorry, this whole idea of covetousness and worship.
- 48:31There's a a very famous or fairly famous American
- 48:35University professor, His name was David Foster Wallace.
- 48:38He is apparently passed away now.
- 48:39He's like borderline genius, maybe a very, very smart guy.
- 48:43He eventually killed himself. But he said this in the
- 48:46day-to-day trenches of adult life.
- 48:48There is actually no such thing as atheism.
- 48:51And this guy was someone who did not believe in God.
- 48:53It wasn't a Christian. He said there is no such thing
- 48:55as not worshipping. If you're on on Instagram and
- 48:59you're on the Internet looking at homes and cars and trucks and
- 49:02planes and farms and whatever else, you're worshipping
- 49:05something. You're coveting something.
- 49:07So coveting wanting is like worship, He said.
- 49:09There is no such thing as we're not worshipping.
- 49:11Everybody worships. The only choice we get is what
- 49:15to worship and the compelling reason for maybe choosing some
- 49:18sort of God or spiritual type thing to worship, whether it's
- 49:22Jesus Christ or Allah or Yahweh or the Wiccan Mother goddess or
- 49:25the four Noble truths or some inviolable set of ethical
- 49:28principles is pretty much anything else you worship will
- 49:31eat you alive. He said if you worship money and
- 49:34things, if they are what you take tap meaning in life from
- 49:38then you will never have enough. You'll never feel like you have
- 49:41enough. It's the truth.
- 49:42Worship your body and beauty and sexual lure and you will always
- 49:46feel ugly. And when time and age starts
- 49:48showing, you would die a million deaths before they finally
- 49:51grieve you. And so he when he says that
- 49:54coveting is like worshipping, like idolatry, It's not.
- 49:59It's not a stretch like we think our society is free from idol
- 50:03worship, like we don't bow down to Fail or or Asherah, but we do
- 50:07like the same spirits are still at work in our world today as
- 50:12what we're in the world back then that offered their children
- 50:15the sacrifices and different things.
- 50:16Those same things are happening in our society today.
- 50:19And when you're living a covetous life, you're idolatry,
- 50:23you're idolatrous, you're worshipping some other gods, and
- 50:26so you're worshiping all the time.
- 50:29Where is your worship going towards, right?
- 50:31Whether you're an atheist or not, whether you're a Christian
- 50:33or a religious person or not, you are worshiping something.
- 50:37And if you're living an idolatry or a covetous life, you are
- 50:41living an idolatrous life. Yeah, First Corinthians 12/31
- 50:48says, but covet earnestly the best gifts.
- 50:52So, so coveting in itself is not necessarily sinful, but if
- 50:59you're coveting things other than Christ, if you're idolizing
- 51:03something other than Christ and God is that is that right?
- 51:07I mean, because here that here it uses it in a, in a good way,
- 51:11like it's telling us to cover those good gifts.
- 51:20We got time for one more, right? Let's see anything else on 6:00
- 51:26and 7:00 that that any of you, or when you do, we bounce to
- 51:29verse 8I think we got it pretty well covered.
- 51:33Yep. Verse 8 says.
- 51:35But now he also put off all these anger, wrath, malice,
- 51:40blasphemy, filthy communication out of your mouth.
- 51:45Yeah, Dad, go ahead, dig right in.
- 51:47Yeah, Ephesians chapter 5, verse 3, a very connecting type of
- 51:52passage. Paul wrote them both and he said
- 51:54there, but fornication and all uncleanness or covetousness, let
- 51:58it not be once named among you as becometh Saints.
- 52:03And then he says, and now put off also all these.
- 52:06And so here he's kind of doing the same type of thing.
- 52:08These, these inordinate affections and lusts and sinful,
- 52:12fleshly, sinful sexual things, uncleanness, you should never be
- 52:16doing those things. But he says now above and beyond
- 52:19that, like those are the things that a lot of even religious
- 52:23people don't do outwardly. They might be involved with
- 52:25secretly, but they wouldn't want to show you that they're doing
- 52:28them in any way publicly. But they might be OK with some
- 52:31of these next things. And the the wrath of God is
- 52:35coming upon the children of disobedience for that first
- 52:37list. But this second list is not a
- 52:39far, far away from that first list.
- 52:42People who live with this second list, anger, wrath, malice,
- 52:46blasphemy, and filthy communication.
- 52:48They're like on the doorstep of the bigger ones.
- 52:51You know, you, you might be able to control your sexual urge and
- 52:55not rape or not molest, but you're constantly angry on the
- 52:59verge of exploding and, and hurting people.
- 53:02Well, you're, you're kind of almost venturing into that same
- 53:05vein of sexual sin where your anger could explode to taking
- 53:10control of somebody's body and so on and so forth.
- 53:12So there's, there's a lot of crossover here.
- 53:14But in Ephesians he actually says these things should never
- 53:17be named and now put off also all these.
- 53:19So I think he's doing something similar here where Christians
- 53:22ought not to be angry, wrathful or desiring to hurt people.
- 53:27That's what malice is or wishing hurt upon other people and
- 53:31blasphemy. I think most people have a a
- 53:33fairly decent concept of what that is is as taking the holy
- 53:37and profaning it in some way and then filthy communication like
- 53:41Christians should be known for having a clean mouth.
- 53:44People who have their mood under control who don't allow external
- 53:49circumstances to dictate how they're going to feel.
- 53:52So real righteousness goes way down to your feelings.
- 53:57I I've heard recently that there's a quite a movement in
- 54:00the last 10-15 years to if going back to that first list of sins
- 54:05is say you have same sex attraction.
- 54:08They try to smooth it out by calling it same sex attraction.
- 54:12And some people will even say I'm a I'm a gay Christian, but
- 54:15I'm celibate. I don't ever touch it, I don't
- 54:17ever act on it. I stay far away from it.
- 54:20I'm just gay Christian. It would be like akin to saying
- 54:23I'm a pedophilia Christian. I'm a, a drunkard Christian.
- 54:27Like it doesn't, it doesn't make any sense.
- 54:29But because they want to be so accepting of the world's sin,
- 54:33they they put these labels on it and say, I understand what it's
- 54:36like to be tempted in this way. Therefore I am this kind of a
- 54:39Christian. And so those ones are obvious
- 54:42that like nobody should be a great gay Christian, but you
- 54:45should also be not known as an angry Christian or as a malice
- 54:50out full of malice. You should not be known as one
- 54:52who will RIP off someone in a business deal or someone who is
- 54:57slandering. Like all those little things
- 54:59should be of your concern as well, right?
- 55:02Yeah, that's that's really good. Dad.
- 55:04I appreciate you laying it out that way.
- 55:07And that is exactly why I believe that Andrew was talking
- 55:11earlier about bad, bad attitudes in your home, because, and, and
- 55:17I see that in plenty of people around us that, you know,
- 55:21they're Christian and everything until they smash their thumb or
- 55:24until their wife offends them or until they get bunched up in a,
- 55:28in a hurdle about their kids are too busy of a schedule.
- 55:32You know, until this thing happens.
- 55:34And then you can see, you know, like the glass that you know
- 55:37what, when you slosh a glass, whatever's in the glass, that's
- 55:39what comes out. You know, that kind of thing.
- 55:41That's why being cleansed and being being godly on the inside
- 55:48all the way through matters so much.
- 55:51And that includes your attitude for sure, Andrew.
- 55:56Yeah, it's interesting that anger is in there.
- 56:00You know that there's nowhere in the 10 commandments that be,
- 56:03don't be angry. It says don't kill.
- 56:05And then Jesus comes along and says you're angry, you've
- 56:09committed murder. And so it's very serious.
- 56:14And it's the one that bites all of us.
- 56:16I'm still working on that. It's hard for me to not get
- 56:21frustrated, you know, and get angry about things.
- 56:25And but it's, it's it's like Dan said, it's one of them sins that
- 56:29are bad. It shouldn't be among
- 56:31Christians. We should be able to have our
- 56:33cool. And there's a lot of people that
- 56:36are long minded, but I'm telling you what they don't have this
- 56:39one now only only reckoning yourself to be dead and being
- 56:46spiritually minded have a spiritual heavenly vision.
- 56:50Can you not get mad when in your mind the worst thing happened?
- 56:56You have to be completely have your affections set on things
- 57:00above to not respond with anger, frustration and you know the
- 57:04whole toxic environment. A lot of law minded people are
- 57:08have a lot of malice. They're into a lot of dishonest,
- 57:12shady business deals. You know, it's just something
- 57:16that the Spirit of God is superior to law.
- 57:19And so I'm just not impressed with the idea of law.
- 57:24And that's why God is doing this.
- 57:26He's telling us, look, the law of the Spirit and the life of
- 57:29Jesus Christ in you is so much more glorious than that which
- 57:33was Craven in stones and done away.
- 57:37Amen. Amen, Melvin.
- 57:39Yeah, I think one thing that came to my mind when I was
- 57:43reading this is that, well, two things.
- 57:46The first thing is, is that he is still, we have to remember
- 57:51he's still talking in the context of that we are dead in
- 57:55Christ, right? So we're we are dead to these
- 57:58things. Like it's like a lot of people
- 58:00read this and again, thinking that we have to somehow, you
- 58:04know, mortify this or or kill this, but we are actually dead
- 58:09to this. Now, whether we or believe that
- 58:11or not is the is the question. But and that's where we have to
- 58:17look at ourselves, I guess, and and see where we're at on this.
- 58:22If but the filthy communication out of your mouth, We read that
- 58:27and we think that that is just, you know, sit swearing or are
- 58:33using bad language. And it is it is part of that,
- 58:37but it's also speaking negatively about other
- 58:41individuals, gossiping about other people.
- 58:46That it to me in my mind is all included in that because there's
- 58:49a lot of law abiding people that would say, well, I, you know, I
- 58:56don't ever say, you know, poop or I don't ever say, you know a
- 59:00bad word. But then they're all the time
- 59:04gossiping or speaking negatively about others.
- 59:06And it's all in the same. It's filthy communication out of
- 59:10your mouth. Anything that is coming out of
- 59:12your mouth that is not positive or is not directed towards God
- 59:19is, is filthy communication. So I guess that's just what I
- 59:24thought of when I read this. But the main thing is that he
- 59:30says, but now ye also put off all these.
- 59:33He's not saying, he's not saying I, I want you to put these off.
- 59:37He said you have put these off. And so that's another thing.
- 59:41I want if he would read the very next verse, he would answer your
- 59:44question. It would, yeah.
- 59:46Yeah, that's right. If you're still a question man.
- 59:53Ephesians 426 does tell us, Be ye angry and sin not.
- 59:58Let not the sun go down upon your wrath, neither give place
- 1:00:01to the devil. I say, I think anger is what
- 1:00:04stops a man or what makes a man stop injustices like rape or
- 1:00:09molestation or abortion. You should be angry about those
- 1:00:12things, but don't allow it to consume you.
- 1:00:15You a just man, a righteous man. Will use anger appropriately.
- 1:00:20It will not gain control of him to the point where he loses his
- 1:00:24control. When someone loses control,
- 1:00:26anger turns to wrath very quickly.
- 1:00:28I have felt wrath on a couple occasions and it sounds silly to
- 1:00:32even talk about it but it's like this seething rage that comes
- 1:00:34over you. I had a dog that kept killing
- 1:00:37chickens and it just it just so enraged me that I lost control.
- 1:00:41I felt so ridiculous after, like how could a dog cause me to lose
- 1:00:45my control? But I felt like a, a murderous
- 1:00:48rage come over me for killing my chickens.
- 1:00:51Like I'm really, really upset. And and that's the progress,
- 1:00:54right? Like you're angry, but it's
- 1:00:56uncontrolled anger and it turns to rage and it just, it, it
- 1:01:00takes over your body. And this is where murder comes
- 1:01:02from, right? It, it's from that same like
- 1:01:05uncontrolled anger that just explodes and, you know, wrenches
- 1:01:09flying across the room and all kinds of stuff.
- 1:01:11That's that uncontrolled anger that I think he's referring to.
- 1:01:14Whereas in Ephesians 4, he says, you know, go ahead and be angry,
- 1:01:19But anger is a it's an emotion that comes from God, right?
- 1:01:22It's something that he feels. I remember once years ago, I was
- 1:01:25witnessing to a Co worker and we were talking about child
- 1:01:29molestation. And as we were talking about,
- 1:01:32you know, children being hurt this way, he was visibly be
- 1:01:35getting very, very angry. He had a 7 year old daughter at
- 1:01:38the time, I believe. And you just said, man, if
- 1:01:40somebody were to touch my girl, like you could just see in his
- 1:01:42mind he was going there right? And he was talking about what he
- 1:01:45would do to the man. And I said, you know, God feels
- 1:01:48the same way you do. And he looked at me kind of
- 1:01:51baffled. I said absolutely that that
- 1:01:53rage, that anger, that drive to murder, to kill the man who's
- 1:01:57doing this injustice. God feels that way.
- 1:01:59He's angry at the wicked every day.
- 1:02:01He, he's going to execute judgement upon those that are
- 1:02:05unjust. But our, our motives get mixed
- 1:02:09in there and we do wrong things. We, we come at it in a way where
- 1:02:12we wouldn't do it justly. And so we should not take
- 1:02:15vengeance, but we should allow our anger to motivate us at
- 1:02:19times. Just don't let the sun go down
- 1:02:21on your wrath. Yep, all right, time to close.
- 1:02:26I one thing real quick. We were in South Dakota at a
- 1:02:30church at a friend's house for the weekend and the pastor
- 1:02:34there, he said he made one comment about kind of on this
- 1:02:37subject. He said temptation, being
- 1:02:39tempted is not sin, giving into it is sin.
- 1:02:46So it is not wrong to have those feelings.
- 1:02:48It is wrong to give into those feelings.
- 1:02:51So don't be discouraged when you have strong feelings about
- 1:02:55something that is not the problem that is that is we know
- 1:02:59that is coming. We know that is what Satan uses
- 1:03:01or sometimes we bring it on ourselves, whatever, that's OK.
- 1:03:05What what is needed though, is that we understand how that we
- 1:03:08manage that, how we overcome that and that we don't give it
- 1:03:10to it. So with that, God bless you
- 1:03:14guys. Thanks for your time and your
- 1:03:15input on this. Appreciate it very much.
- 1:03:18We didn't get very far, but it was very good.
- 1:03:20So appreciate all that. So all right, next week, same
- 1:03:23time, same place, check out previous episodes
- 1:03:25simplychristministries.com and you'll be blessed.
- 1:03:30All right, God bless you. Have a good one.
- 1:03:31Thanks.
