Transcript
- 0:25[SPEAKER_02]: What's up everybody, and welcome to another episode of Scouting the Finns right here on the 3-arch for Carrie, Godcast, also part.
- 0:32[SPEAKER_02]: Other five reasons sports network, I'm Rikovos, who sound Patel and joining me are both Eric's finally for the start of the NFL season, gentlemen.
- 0:47[SPEAKER_04]: I thought Eric was gonna go first, usually does.
- 0:49[SPEAKER_01]: I thought Eric was gonna go first, too.
- 0:52[SPEAKER_04]: I see we get two Eric's on here and everything just,
- 0:54[SPEAKER_04]: falls apart.
- 0:56[SPEAKER_04]: You know, glad to be on with both you guys again as always.
- 0:59[SPEAKER_04]: I know we got to talk a little bit about what happened last week, but you know, I think that I'm a little more optimistic than most, so I'm kind of looking forward to to moving forward and get to the part we're talking about the Patriots.
- 1:12[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, I mean, I'm I'm
- 1:15[SPEAKER_01]: I'm looking forward to being talked off the ledge a little bit this evening, so you know any any steps in those directions.
- 1:22[SPEAKER_01]: I'm I'm very willing to take turn the page on the quotes and let's see if there's a better effort here against knowing the way we have to talk about this game just a little bit because we have to talk just just grow a little bit like they lost to the quotes.
- 1:39[SPEAKER_02]: Obviously not what everyone had expected.
- 1:42[SPEAKER_02]: uh, the offense struggled specifically to a ton of my lower uh, some routes were a little bit questionable as well.
- 1:50[SPEAKER_02]: We talked about in the vetted stage show as part of the 3-arch precarious discord.
- 1:55[SPEAKER_02]: You guys can go ahead uh, subscribe to that for 99 and a month for all access.
- 2:01[SPEAKER_02]: I believe it's five or six dollars.
- 2:03[SPEAKER_02]: I'll have to definitely correct me.
- 2:05[SPEAKER_02]: on that, I'm in their coaches in their area because also in their as well, we go ahead and break down a little bit more film review tool was bad bad bad bad but what was much more disappointing was the defense.
- 2:20[SPEAKER_02]: I mean,
- 2:22[SPEAKER_02]: The defense blitz blitzed almost 57% which was the highs in the NFL in week one finished 30th and pressure rate coach you and I talk I mean Eric you and I talked about this in our review show where they needed to get after Daniel Jones, but Daniel Jones flipped the script and just completely shredded them in the short zone, especially with the linear pass catcher the weapons he had.
- 2:54[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, I mean, I think credit to Indianapolis and Shane Steiken, I think they had a really good game plan for getting the ball out quickly and a lot of those instances, you know, I think you can definitely see early on Anthony Weaver's kind of apprehension about the corner back group.
- 3:13[SPEAKER_01]: Um, you know, in terms of wanting to play those guys a little bit further back maybe not get beat over the top, um, but, you know, it kind of led to a death by a thousand cuts kind of approach by the Indianapolis Colt here and
- 3:29[SPEAKER_01]: You know, when the defensive line really did get their opportunity to genuinely, you know, Russian and not have the ball come out in two seconds, there just wasn't the push that was anticipated with this group and, you know, kind of the the arsenal that the dolphins have at their disposal in terms of past rush, at least on paper.
- 3:55[SPEAKER_01]: So that was probably one of the more disappointing things, although I do think that a lot of it had to do with a good game plan by Indie.
- 4:03[SPEAKER_02]: Coach, do you think, go, Lou and Aruma will found the blueprint against Miami's passing offense, or was this just a very wonky week one?
- 4:15[SPEAKER_04]: I mean, the biggest thing was it was a wonky week one.
- 4:19[SPEAKER_04]: I was less concerned.
- 4:21[SPEAKER_04]: about the the offensive game plan that I was about the defensive game plan, you know, air he said death by a thousand cuts and to me that felt like it was kind of the opposite that instead of sitting back and trying to let that front for get after the quarterback that weaver was trying to compensate too much.
- 4:40[SPEAKER_04]: And and a rumor or a striking was just ahead of weaver.
- 4:44[SPEAKER_04]: Like the opening script that striking out was way better than what weaver had because
- 4:49[SPEAKER_04]: felt like every time the Dolphins blitz, Daniel Jones was getting the ball out to the hot receiver and they were picking up chunk yards out of it.
- 4:57[SPEAKER_04]: The game was a failure in all aspects.
- 5:00[SPEAKER_04]: The offense was not good, right?
- 5:02[SPEAKER_04]: And it goes squarely back to it.
- 5:05[SPEAKER_04]: He wasn't the only thing that was wrong, but when you're quarterback plays that poorly, it's going to be tough to win many games.
- 5:12[SPEAKER_04]: But then when you compound that by a defense that couldn't get off the field and even
- 5:20[SPEAKER_04]: You're right back on there, play later, because you run into the punner, right?
- 5:23[SPEAKER_04]: Or you have your two returners, your two deep guys, almost competing to catch the ball instead of having one of them blocking.
- 5:32[SPEAKER_04]: Just felt like a lot of that stuff was happening, but trying to talk, people off the ledge, like what I would say about that game is that most of the stuff that you saw happen, that snowballed into the 30-point spread before the dolphin scored,
- 5:48[SPEAKER_04]: Most of it's very fixable, right?
- 5:50[SPEAKER_04]: It's Jonas Vainaya, Miss and a block.
- 5:53[SPEAKER_04]: It's Devon H and a little too wide on his own run.
- 5:57[SPEAKER_04]: It's two of who has been historically very accurate, not sailing a pass on the first third down of the game.
- 6:06[SPEAKER_04]: Defensively, they found, I felt like they found a little more success later as they kind of backed off and let the front seven do their thing.
- 6:15[SPEAKER_04]: So I think there are,
- 6:17[SPEAKER_04]: things to take away from it.
- 6:18[SPEAKER_04]: But overall, like my feeling is that you get a few crazy week one games every single week, right, or every single year.
- 6:28[SPEAKER_04]: And it's not great.
- 6:31[SPEAKER_04]: Nobody should feel great right now.
- 6:32[SPEAKER_04]: But I'm still kind of in a wait and see mode because I feel like what we see in week two is going to say a lot more about the team overall.
- 6:40[SPEAKER_04]: If they come out and do this again,
- 6:47[SPEAKER_04]: If they can bounce back this week, then I think there are a lot of people that are going to step back from that ledge pretty quickly.
- 6:53[SPEAKER_02]: Well, the game was just bad.
- 6:55[SPEAKER_02]: Just bad, bad, bad, and this actually came to my mind.
- 7:00[SPEAKER_02]: My mind just now, if any of you guys listen to Reggaeton specifically, Bad Bunny, the song, whoever you'll just, his towards the end of the song, he goes, bad, bad, bad, bad, bad, bad, bad, bad, bad, bad, bad, bad, bad, bad, bad, bad, bad, bad, bad, bad, bad, bad, bad, bad, bad, bad, bad, bad, bad, bad, bad, bad, bad, bad, bad, bad, bad, bad, bad, bad, bad, bad, bad, bad, bad, bad, bad, bad, bad, bad, bad, bad, bad, bad, bad, bad, bad, bad, bad, bad, bad, bad, bad, bad, bad, bad, bad, bad, bad, bad, bad, bad, bad, bad, bad
- 7:22[SPEAKER_02]: But that's all gone now.
- 7:25[SPEAKER_02]: We're on to week two, onto the New England Patriots.
- 7:28[SPEAKER_02]: Now this is a, there's gonna be quite a story for the narratives on here.
- 7:35[SPEAKER_02]: Two is undefeated up against the New England Patriots.
- 7:39[SPEAKER_02]: And Mike Raeble is undefeated when he plays to a tongue-of-a-law, gentlemen, when,
- 7:47[SPEAKER_02]: When we watch the Patriots that offense and defense of Clips and some of the data points we have, what's your first general takeaway about this team led by my group?
- 8:01[SPEAKER_01]: My first general takeaway with the Patriots right now is that it's still
- 8:06[SPEAKER_01]: work in progress with them.
- 8:09[SPEAKER_01]: I think maybe some people kind of expected it to be a quick fix with my variable coming in and while I do think that he's going to come in and he's going to establish some of that culture that he was known for establishing in Tennessee and what he brought from his days in New Zealand.
- 8:27[SPEAKER_01]: I think he's going to bring that in but in terms of
- 8:30[SPEAKER_01]: You know, the structure isn't fully set in yet with the variable Patriots at this point.
- 8:38[SPEAKER_01]: And I think that the team you see in week two this week is going to be very different from the team that you see, you know, down the line in in week 18 versus the Patriots up in Foxboro.
- 8:49[SPEAKER_01]: And that's where you need to kind of take advantage.
- 8:52[SPEAKER_01]: You know, if you're the Miami Dolphins, Drake May is still kind of falling into the same young quarterback traps that he did last year a little bit, although I think he'll continue to get more comfortable as season progresses.
- 9:11[SPEAKER_01]: You know, it's a very, the Patriots are not, I don't think there's that leap that a lot of people were anticipating, at least not yet to this point.
- 9:22[SPEAKER_01]: And I think that there are some cracks that the dolphins can rightfully take advantage of when I think the data kind of speaks to that.
- 9:32[SPEAKER_01]: But it's really going to be about I think this week because I think when you look at the two teams on paper even last week.
- 9:40[SPEAKER_01]: I don't think 33 to 8 was indicative of the talent level of both teams.
- 9:44[SPEAKER_01]: So I think it's going to come down to really the dolphins level of execution more than anything.
- 9:51[SPEAKER_01]: Because if you execute at the level that you did last week, you're going to be all in too.
- 9:58[SPEAKER_04]: Yeah, I agree with that.
- 9:59[SPEAKER_04]: I think the Patriots roster still has a lot of holes on it.
- 10:08[SPEAKER_04]: You know, a pool of talent, but there are, there are good pieces in there, right, as I'm watching the game, you see the chemistry that Drake may has with 100 Henry at Titan, you have some really good draft picks and trivia on Henderson who
- 10:25[SPEAKER_04]: You know, played well, and I know that it seems like Patriots fans want to see him get a larger share, you know, combined with Remandre Stevens and there will Campbell had a solid first week looks like another another good pick there defensively Milton Williams big time, you know, free agent pick up and he had a good week.
- 10:54[SPEAKER_04]: the Patriots had are things that are fixable, right?
- 10:57[SPEAKER_04]: Even though there's not a ton of talent there, right?
- 10:59[SPEAKER_04]: The Patriots in their heyday were known for not making the big mistakes.
- 11:05[SPEAKER_04]: And I think that that's the culture that Vrable is trying to instill, but I think that on both sides of the ball like that, you know, made to me still seems a little bit hesitant in throwing the ball as he kind of has to see the receiver versus, you know, throwing
- 11:22[SPEAKER_04]: anticipation, but I think that something that as he gets more comfortable and Josh McDaniel's scheme, right?
- 11:29[SPEAKER_04]: I think that we're going to see an improvement there in the same thing defensively.
- 11:32[SPEAKER_04]: Like you see some of these blitzes getting home and creating big place for the defense, but you also see some of them that are
- 11:41[SPEAKER_04]: are not getting home and because they're taking those risks are resulting in big plays, but those are the type of things that I think will improve for the Patriots as they move forward throughout the season.
- 11:53[SPEAKER_04]: So, you know, it is a good opportunity to get the Patriots in week two where they're still working through some new schemes and getting used to the coaching staff there.
- 12:03[SPEAKER_02]: All right, let's go down to the game plan.
- 12:07[SPEAKER_02]: What's talk about the Miami Dolphins offense?
- 12:09[SPEAKER_02]: Where's the Patriots defense?
- 12:11[SPEAKER_02]: There's not a lot of whole good we can talk about.
- 12:14[SPEAKER_02]: This Dolphins offense, especially coming off that week one loss.
- 12:18[SPEAKER_02]: So this is going to be more so geared towards that Patriots defense.
- 12:23[SPEAKER_02]: They have two main pass rush threats.
- 12:25[SPEAKER_02]: Milton Williams, a big signing out for agency, top five pass rush grade and win rate.
- 12:32[SPEAKER_02]: Per PFF, Hero Glandry had two and a half sex, primarily that came off of stunts and twist.
- 12:39[SPEAKER_02]: There's a little bit of offensive line concern there, specifically with Austin Jackson and James Daniel being out.
- 12:46[SPEAKER_02]: It was going to be the right side of the offensive line to his blind side.
- 12:49[SPEAKER_02]: That's specifically where Hero Glandry lines up and got.
- 12:55[SPEAKER_02]: both of his sacks on those stunts and twists.
- 12:59[SPEAKER_02]: Millets of William sometimes is going to play the note, sometimes he's going to play the one tech, or sometimes with three tech as well.
- 13:07[SPEAKER_02]: The coverage profile, and there you go, you see the sacks right there, right on the screen, the coverage profile file for the Patriots secondary.
- 13:18[SPEAKER_02]: There were 29th and EPA when they played zone coverage.
- 13:25[SPEAKER_02]: Man coverage heavy teams so expect them to play a little bit of man, but we'll talk about what we think what's going to happen when the dolphins face the Patriots defense.
- 13:37[SPEAKER_02]: There were the second best defense in cover one last week, the Colts were the top defense.
- 13:46[SPEAKER_02]: Been the numbers were inflated because of the tulipic.
- 13:49[SPEAKER_02]: against cover one.
- 13:51[SPEAKER_02]: The Patriots had a 77% defensive success rate.
- 13:55[SPEAKER_02]: However, they allowed six yards per attempt in six yards per completion, which was 13th.
- 14:04[SPEAKER_02]: in the NFL.
- 14:05[SPEAKER_02]: They have a little bit of weakness in the secondary.
- 14:08[SPEAKER_02]: None of the defensive backs were top 50 in grades Marcus Jones, their primary slot guy, allowed 34 yards and the slot we will see if Christian Gonzalez actually plays this game.
- 14:21[SPEAKER_02]: He did not practice Thursday, he did not practice Wednesday.
- 14:24[SPEAKER_02]: We have to see what the Friday report comes out.
- 14:27[SPEAKER_02]: In terms of motion,
- 14:30[SPEAKER_02]: We know is primarily dedicated based on motion.
- 14:35[SPEAKER_02]: New England was the fourth best defense versus motion in week one coach you and I talked about this invented.
- 14:44[SPEAKER_02]: We need efficiency in the motions, not just running for the heck of it.
- 14:50[SPEAKER_02]: Yeah, you can do motions all they want, but are they creating the leverage?
- 14:54[SPEAKER_02]: Like we saw the cool stew with Tyler Warren, Josh Downs, and some of the other playmakers of the dolphins need to find leverage with Devon Hain, with Tyree Kill.
- 15:06[SPEAKER_02]: I don't know if they can do it with, you know, Tanner Connor or Julian Hill this week.
- 15:14[SPEAKER_04]: Yeah, I think that, you know, we talked about this for a couple of years now that these motions, you know, I think that when they run the motions, the motions are always used to gather information.
- 15:26[SPEAKER_04]: But I feel like the motions that the dolphins try to use are being used to gather information for the coaches more than the players on the field.
- 15:34[SPEAKER_04]: And when you have a player like to out there that, you know, is supposedly very cerebral, you know, supposedly
- 15:42[SPEAKER_04]: control the entire playbook at the line of scrimmage.
- 15:44[SPEAKER_04]: I feel like you need to reduce those motions.
- 15:48[SPEAKER_04]: And get him out there with one motion, trust your scheme, a little more than what we have.
- 15:55[SPEAKER_04]: Get him out there with one motion, let the motion come across to be a coverage indicator, and then let two work from there, whether it is to
- 16:04[SPEAKER_04]: You know, call multiple plays into the huddle where he's got a run pass option that he can check to or just to, you know, allow him to have more freedom at the line of scrimmage, but if you're going to give him that freedom to manipulate the defense, then you need to give him the time to do it.
- 16:21[SPEAKER_02]: So, you know, I think that there need to be is always going to be in the huddle, you need to give him more than 10 to 12 seconds after the huddle.
- 16:33[SPEAKER_04]: Yeah, that's, you need to get out of the hospital earlier.
- 16:35[SPEAKER_04]: You need to get them in more time at the line of screen.
- 16:37[SPEAKER_04]: You need to get them up there.
- 16:38[SPEAKER_04]: You need to have that motion done with, you know, eight, 10 seconds left so that we can make a quick change, right?
- 16:45[SPEAKER_04]: So that we're not, we're not stuck with whatever pass routes are called so that we can have three motions, so that the guys upstairs can see what's going on.
- 16:53[SPEAKER_02]: The guys upstairs, are you listening?
- 16:55[SPEAKER_02]: Are you listening?
- 16:56[SPEAKER_02]: What's coach is saying?
- 17:03[SPEAKER_04]: Yeah, I just overall, I think that they need to cut down the pre-stant motions and allow the players to play, allow the guys that you're supposed to be trusting with this scheme to be able to execute on the field and not hold their hands so much that you're basically handcuffing them by not being able to get through everything until you got five seconds left on the flock.
- 17:28[SPEAKER_02]: of apologies for the rant and how do you off-coach?
- 17:32[SPEAKER_02]: Just very passionate about motion.
- 17:34[SPEAKER_01]: Absolutely.
- 17:36[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, I think that there's a little bit of an angle to this too where when the motion is used as much as the dolphins use it, I mean, listen, we've been saying, you know, everyone knows what motion is meant to do.
- 17:51[SPEAKER_01]: Opposing defensive coordinators,
- 17:57[SPEAKER_01]: And at a certain point, and this is where the dolphins, and we see to a kind of get in trouble with some of this stuff occasionally, is with those presnap reads, you know, if good defensive coordinators are going to manipulate the manipulation, where.
- 18:19[SPEAKER_01]: You know, they're showing a specific reaction to the motion in order to invoke a certain read that might not actually be their post-nap, and you know, I think that when you, it's just the natural kind of Evan flow.
- 18:37[SPEAKER_01]: where, you know, if you overuse something to the point where it becomes just kind of what you do, you lose a little bit of the novelty of it, you lose a little bit of what it provides you.
- 18:49[SPEAKER_01]: You know, I'd really like to see them kind of get back to more of a meat and potatoes game plan today, or on Sunday.
- 18:57[SPEAKER_01]: And I think that that's going to have to get back to the basics of the run game, you know,
- 19:06[SPEAKER_01]: They were really, I mean, like top of the league in EPA per rush week one in a 33 to eight loss.
- 19:14[SPEAKER_01]: And I think that you look at the Patriots in terms of their past rush and you're going to have to try to mute that a little bit.
- 19:21[SPEAKER_01]: I know Mike McDonald spoke to wanting to get Ollie Gordon a little bit more involved in week two.
- 19:26[SPEAKER_01]: I think he's going to have to get him a lot more involved this week.
- 19:31[SPEAKER_02]: I am so glad you brought up the running game, Eric, and I'm so glad that you're talking about EPA now.
- 19:38[SPEAKER_02]: We have a little nerd, a nerd fanboy club going on on this podcast, I was producing the three out of spare carry preview show as well.
- 19:48[SPEAKER_02]: Not that mentioned, EPR is successful, so hey guys, I think we're doing something right, something right here to compliment.
- 19:55[SPEAKER_02]: the three archer carry a team right there.
- 19:59[SPEAKER_02]: But look, it was only seven rushes and the game just got away from them, but they were successful.
- 20:05[SPEAKER_02]: I mean, they converted two, third and shorts.
- 20:10[SPEAKER_02]: That was probably the biggest success story out of that game, further dolphins, offense, and
- 20:18[SPEAKER_02]: I saw some of those motions in the run game.
- 20:21[SPEAKER_02]: It was more so mean potatoes.
- 20:22[SPEAKER_02]: It wasn't a lot of fancy, angled, coming inside, then looping around on an orbiter tirek, doing these fancy jet motions, no, it was basic.
- 20:33[SPEAKER_02]: And it worked primarily on the left side of the ball with Patrick Paul and Jonah Savana.
- 20:40[SPEAKER_02]: I coach, I want to shout out your boy, Patrick Paul.
- 20:44[SPEAKER_02]: He was.
- 20:46[SPEAKER_02]: the most elite offensive tackle in week one in terms of advanced metrics.
- 20:52[SPEAKER_02]: Why?
- 20:53[SPEAKER_02]: You may ask 0% pressures less than 0.5% blown blocks hats off to you Patrick Paul.
- 21:05[SPEAKER_02]: Make sure you do the same thing again against this New England Patriots.
- 21:08[SPEAKER_02]: pass.
- 21:09[SPEAKER_02]: Hopefully the Dolphins run a game can get going, a little bit more man concepts mix in a little bit of zone, but Coach I want to ask you this.
- 21:18[SPEAKER_02]: specifically for the passing game.
- 21:20[SPEAKER_02]: We saw defenses sit on Mimey's in Breaker's in week one and last season.
- 21:27[SPEAKER_02]: What are the answers this week against this Patriots passing defense more trips?
- 21:33[SPEAKER_02]: Outs seems a little bit more Devon H it in the passing game.
- 21:38[SPEAKER_02]: What's this all of here?
- 21:40[SPEAKER_04]: I mean, I feel like they did try to use Devon H in the passing early in the third quarter.
- 21:45[SPEAKER_04]: They went to a few.
- 21:46[SPEAKER_04]: swing passes to hammer in the flats.
- 21:50[SPEAKER_04]: If the Patriots continue to play as much man coverage as they did in week one, then I think the solution is to create some isolation.
- 21:58[SPEAKER_04]: The Patriots have their own questions in the secondary.
- 22:02[SPEAKER_04]: You have two very well compensated wider severs that you should be able to isolate in space and be able to create.
- 22:10[SPEAKER_04]: And that kind of goes back to the point of
- 22:12[SPEAKER_04]: giving to a time at the line right you almost want to get out there and just play some back yard ball where you know maybe you put trips to one side with tie reclined up to the other right any you know you have a couple of you know signals for two in tie rec to just you know so the sland is it a go right that we can just win one on one you know I think that there will be opportunities to run the ball against this defense but it will
- 22:42[SPEAKER_04]: The passing game, I think, has to be quick, because like the Patriots do a really good job of being able to isolate the man side of the slide protections.
- 22:52[SPEAKER_04]: You know, I guess the Raiders, they did a good job of showing pressure and getting the Raiders to slide one way and then bringing a twist or a stunt from the opposite side.
- 23:05[SPEAKER_04]: And I imagine that, I guess, the dolphins they are going to
- 23:08[SPEAKER_04]: You know, influence that slide to the left side.
- 23:11[SPEAKER_04]: And you kind of have to do it based off of pre-snap looks.
- 23:14[SPEAKER_04]: But that's going to put pressure on whoever is at right guard, whether that's, you know, Key on Smith, Dan Brunskill, or, you know, somebody else.
- 23:23[SPEAKER_04]: And likely there are very boring on that side.
- 23:25[SPEAKER_04]: It's going to put a lot of pressure on them.
- 23:27[SPEAKER_04]: So I think we're going to have to continue to see the ball get out quickly.
- 23:31[SPEAKER_04]: But again, isolation routes, I think using some natural picks
- 23:38[SPEAKER_04]: to create those quick completions, but I don't want to see to a sitting back there and having to go second, third, read against the blitz packages of the Patriots have.
- 23:49[SPEAKER_02]: I think my worst fear is variables switching from man heavy to zone heavy and running a lot of cover 2 cover 4 stuff, Tampa stuff.
- 24:01[SPEAKER_02]: And we saw to a struggle again like that the last 2 seasons when playing up against variable and if that happens and if that's not corrected, it is going to be a very, very long week
- 24:19[SPEAKER_02]: We already are what these hard conversations are going to get a lot worse.
- 24:25[SPEAKER_02]: All right, before we head to the Dolphins defense versus the Patriots offense, we are going to head to Marine.
- 24:36[SPEAKER_02]: All right, guys, I'm feeling a little bit hungry as of late.

- 28:29[SPEAKER_02]: All right, getting back in season.
- 28:31[SPEAKER_02]: Getting back in season and hopefully the dolphins defense can get back into season form up against this Patriots offense and Drake make.
- 28:42[SPEAKER_02]: Drake may did not have a good showing of against Las Vegas Raiders.
- 28:46[SPEAKER_02]: At least his metrics.
- 28:48[SPEAKER_02]: Didn't show it.
- 28:49[SPEAKER_02]: 21st of EPA with a negative 0.0026 in success rate with 42% and 28th in third down conversion Too old was a little bit lower.
- 28:55[SPEAKER_02]: He was like 31st 30 second
- 29:05[SPEAKER_02]: The big thing, I think, was Drake made up against cover three, 22nd in EPA, 23rd in success rate, 21st in first down conversions.
- 29:19[SPEAKER_02]: Up against the blitz, Drake made sometimes struggles with that as we saw last season.
- 29:26[SPEAKER_02]: He was 19th in EPA, 20th in success, 15th in first down conversions.
- 29:36[SPEAKER_02]: if the dolphins can generate pressure if they blitz officially.
- 29:42[SPEAKER_02]: It's not about the amount of blitz is it's about the efficiency of the blitz and if they can get after him.
- 29:52[SPEAKER_02]: They're going to have to rely a lot on Remanders Stevenson or Travegan Henderson.
- 29:58[SPEAKER_02]: I think Travegan Henderson is going to play a little bit more snaps, specifically in the past game, if the Dolphins play more zone.
- 30:08[SPEAKER_02]: It feels like they're occurring secondary with Jack Jones, Resoul Douglas, stormed up brain-veying injured Jason Marshall Jr.
- 30:16[SPEAKER_02]: In the slot, they all have their strengths and weaknesses.
- 30:19[SPEAKER_02]: Resoul Douglas is a better hit for his own.
- 30:22[SPEAKER_02]: Jack Jones is a better in-man.
- 30:24[SPEAKER_02]: We still don't know what the leggings of Jason Marshall Jr.
- 30:27[SPEAKER_02]: is in the second there.
- 30:29[SPEAKER_02]: But there's a lot of question and that opens up all these short area completions that we saw Daniel Jones just absolutely destroy the dolphin's defense with.
- 30:40[SPEAKER_02]: I think Drake may is going to do the same.
- 30:44[SPEAKER_02]: However, there's a stat for you guys.
- 30:47[SPEAKER_02]: Drake may was pressured
- 30:51[SPEAKER_02]: around, it took him around 3.83 seconds to throw the ball in the clips that coach is showing right now.
- 31:02[SPEAKER_02]: You can see the offensive line, the offensive line of New England gets a little bit of push, but not enough.
- 31:09[SPEAKER_02]: And what happened is that Drake may have to move off his spot and run around, which is why he's extending the time.
- 31:18[SPEAKER_02]: If you get Drake made a do that, and if Chop Robinson, Jayla Phillips, Bradley, Bradley Chub, Zack Seeler, and Kenneth Drenn, if they're able to close on and get their hands on Drake, me, they're going to be successful in this game.
- 31:35[SPEAKER_02]: They did not do that, up against Daniel Jones, and the Indianapolis Coles.
- 31:43[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, I think the biggest thing with the New England Patriots versus, like, say, the Indianapolis quotes last week is.
- 31:52[SPEAKER_01]: Patriots offensive line is not the cold offensive line and I think that's a pretty big difference between these two teams.
- 32:01[SPEAKER_01]: You look at Drake may there's still a lot of early pressure coming at him.
- 32:05[SPEAKER_01]: Obviously, you know, they did the work to address the offensive line a little bit taking Campbell in the first round and you know, he's going to end up being a really good offensive line offensive lineman in the NFL, but
- 32:20[SPEAKER_01]: At the same time, there's still more work that needs to be done there in New England along the lines, so I think it's, it's got to be get pressure on Drake May and I'm hoping that there's a little bit more.
- 32:35[SPEAKER_01]: because maybe it's not as talented of a group past catchers in New England.
- 32:41[SPEAKER_01]: Obviously, they do have Stefan Diggs, although the jury's kind of still out us to whether he's the same guy that he has been the last two or three seasons.
- 32:51[SPEAKER_01]: I'd like to see this group in particular.
- 32:54[SPEAKER_01]: I think that this group with Jason Marshall and Russell Douglas and Jack Jones is probably the most physical corner combination we've seen.
- 33:05[SPEAKER_01]: Um, you know, to this date for for this dolphin steam.
- 33:10[SPEAKER_01]: Um, so I'd like to see them maybe get a little bit more physical with these patriots, receivers.
- 33:15[SPEAKER_01]: Um, and kind of just for some of that timing and allow the the.
- 33:20[SPEAKER_01]: the defense and wanted to actually work and get some of that pressure early on.
- 33:24[SPEAKER_01]: 100 Henry scares me.
- 33:28[SPEAKER_01]: That is my biggest concern.
- 33:29[SPEAKER_01]: I look at what Tyler Warren did week one and don't get me wrong.
- 33:33[SPEAKER_01]: I think Tyler Warren is really special, but,
- 33:38[SPEAKER_01]: I look at the chemistry that Drake may and Hunter Henry have, and Hunter Henry has quietly been a bit of a dolphins killer himself over the last couple years, so that's really my biggest concern in terms of the defense of game plan is, is how the dolphins contend with him over the middle.
- 33:59[SPEAKER_04]: Yeah, and so for me, right, some of the notes that I had down as I'm watching that Patriots
- 34:08[SPEAKER_04]: is that I don't think that the Patriots Office of Lines a hole is very good right now.
- 34:14[SPEAKER_04]: And we talk about the risk of Miami having Key on Smith and Larry Borham on the right side.
- 34:19[SPEAKER_04]: Well, the Patriots have two rookies on the left side.
- 34:22[SPEAKER_04]: They have Will Campbell, Left Tackle, and I'm drawing a blank on the name, but it was a center from Georgia, who was here on guard.
- 34:29[SPEAKER_04]: Jerry Wilson, who was a Wilson for some reason, I was thinking of Logan Wilson, Jerry Wilson, is it left guard, right?
- 34:35[SPEAKER_04]: So you have some of the same,
- 34:37[SPEAKER_04]: opportunities there on the other side of the ball.
- 34:40[SPEAKER_04]: One of the other things that I observed is that I feel like Drake may is much better scrambling to his right than he is to his left.
- 34:51[SPEAKER_04]: So I feel for me like my recipe against him would be to the same way that I talked about
- 35:02[SPEAKER_04]: sending a stunt to the man protection side.
- 35:04[SPEAKER_04]: I would find a way to influence the slide to the right side.
- 35:09[SPEAKER_04]: And I would make those two rookies earn their draft status.
- 35:13[SPEAKER_04]: I would try to beat them one on one with sealer and chop.
- 35:18[SPEAKER_04]: I would bring some twist there.
- 35:21[SPEAKER_04]: Maybe it's a, finally time to bring Willie Gayon and run some stunts and some twist there with him as well.
- 35:27[SPEAKER_04]: But if we can, you know,
- 35:30[SPEAKER_04]: Bring the pressure from the right side with the slide and force me to his left.
- 35:35[SPEAKER_04]: I think that's one way to create success as Eric said.
- 35:39[SPEAKER_04]: I feel like his chemistry with Henry is very good.
- 35:43[SPEAKER_04]: There was one particular kind of, unless he had back shoulder, there was more of a back hip throw, where Henry's running down the seam and the defender has inside leverage and may puts it on his left side hip and Henry is it,
- 35:59[SPEAKER_04]: knows exactly what's coming and is able to twist around and catch it as he's going down.
- 36:03[SPEAKER_04]: I think that was a third down conversion if I remember correctly later on in that clip.
- 36:08[SPEAKER_02]: That was unbelievable.
- 36:11[SPEAKER_04]: Yeah, that's a chemistry deal.
- 36:13[SPEAKER_04]: Right, you don't do that without a ton of practice and a ton of comfort.
- 36:18[SPEAKER_04]: And later in the game, it felt like May was trying to build that chemistry with Diggs, felt like there was more targets later in the game that went to Diggs.
- 36:29[SPEAKER_04]: seem like a solid strategy for him.
- 36:31[SPEAKER_04]: You know, another thing that we didn't see as much with Daniel Jones, I think that we'll see this week is if the Patriots are going to show Drake May as a threat in the running game, right?
- 36:40[SPEAKER_04]: He's not going to be a lot more Jackson, but there's going to be some zone reads where he has that option to keep the ball.
- 36:47[SPEAKER_04]: and to run as well, it's not Lamar Jackson.
- 36:51[SPEAKER_04]: I'm not worried about him running for a 70, 80 yard touchdown, but when we get into some key third or fourth-down situations, it's just one of those things that the defense is gonna have to keep their eyes open for.
- 37:05[SPEAKER_02]: Yeah, you mentioned, you mentioned their offensive line not being good as the cults.
- 37:13[SPEAKER_02]: Now what happens if,
- 37:16[SPEAKER_02]: It's the same situation, come week one, where the dolphin's defensive line that was hyped up to be world beaters still can't do anything against this Patriots offensive line and Drake May is just killing them by death, by a thousand paper cuts, like is it?
- 37:36[SPEAKER_02]: There's a hashtag over for this dolphins team?
- 37:40[SPEAKER_02]: Yeah.
- 37:41[SPEAKER_04]: Yeah, if this front seven can not get pressure on Drake made with this offensive line, then we have severely overestimated this front seven.
- 37:50[SPEAKER_04]: And, you know, we, we said from the beginning, the only way that this defense is going to succeed is if that front seven can cover up the secondary.
- 37:58[SPEAKER_04]: So if they can't do that in week two, then that is a major red plaque.
- 38:05[SPEAKER_02]: All right, we're going to finish it off with some expactors of this game, and then we'll get to our predictions.
- 38:12[SPEAKER_02]: Gentlemen, which matchup is more important for the dolphins?
- 38:16[SPEAKER_02]: They're wide receivers up against this Patriot secondary, and to a hitting it in the right place, or the dolphins offensive line that right side up against that New England's stunt heavy pass rush.
- 38:32[SPEAKER_01]: for me it's definitely the the offensive line and I know I know I think I know where a coach is going to go with this one too but you know we've seen the dolphins kind of win.
- 38:49[SPEAKER_01]: and kind of operate a functional offense around the receivers not either not getting open or to a maybe not making connections with the receivers.
- 38:59[SPEAKER_01]: We've seen them kind of maneuver around that.
- 39:01[SPEAKER_01]: I don't think there is maneuvering around Harold Landry and Milton Williams living in the
- 39:14[SPEAKER_01]: kind of match up here is if you cannot mute that past rush for New England, you can't find ways to give to a time, then you're going to have a really tough time scoring a ball and it's going to be really hard to see them, you know, it's going to be hard to envision them winning in that scenario.
- 39:35[SPEAKER_01]: Whereas I can see a world where maybe Tyree, Killing, Jalen, Water, aren't the most productive, but the dolphins still find a way to have a function off and
- 39:45[SPEAKER_04]: see I'm kind of going to go opposite in that sense.
- 39:48[SPEAKER_04]: And the reason that I'm going to say it is because you know, always talk about continuity on the offensive line.
- 39:54[SPEAKER_04]: They didn't have that week one with James Daniels going out after the third or fourth play against Smith coming in.
- 39:59[SPEAKER_04]: He hadn't played guard very much in the pre-season since the early parts of it.
- 40:05[SPEAKER_04]: And then he get Larry Borham likely coming in for Austin Jackson.
- 40:09[SPEAKER_04]: So I'm
- 40:09[SPEAKER_04]: I'm worried about the chemistry there and I think that you're going to have to do a little extra to protect them, whether it is the play actions, whether it's sliding more protection that way.
- 40:20[SPEAKER_04]: So, you know, I think that's a given that you're going to have to protect them and that you're going to have to get the ball out quick.
- 40:27[SPEAKER_04]: So with that being the core philosophy,
- 40:31[SPEAKER_04]: for me, then the X factor for me is the receivers ability to win those matchups.
- 40:35[SPEAKER_04]: Like if you know that you're not gonna have much time, then you need guys that are gonna get it, that are gonna get open quick.
- 40:42[SPEAKER_04]: So I think that the ball's gonna have to get out quick no matter what and for the dolphins to be successful.
- 40:48[SPEAKER_04]: Offensively, I think you're gonna have to create some imbalance on the defense by being able to get some of those
- 40:55[SPEAKER_04]: quick completions get the line backers to sit back a little bit and then to be able to run the ball that's going to, you know, aid the offensive line right once you can keep keep yourself ahead of the chains, get into those second and medium and third and short situations, then you put yourself in a situation where the defense can't really guess what you're doing and that's how you protect that offensive line but I think that the receivers being able to win quickly is going to be a major
- 41:25[SPEAKER_02]: and to a not playing bad, bad, bad, bad, bad, bad couple of opening drives.
- 41:31[SPEAKER_02]: I think the first opening and the second opening drive with the dolphins can get there with the run game if they can run more on the left side and be successful.
- 41:43[SPEAKER_02]: If they can get at least a touchdown on the first drive and at least a field goal on the second drive, especially at home.
- 41:54[SPEAKER_02]: I think something can be done where it should not look like a slot fest of against the Indianapolis goals coach and Eric thank you guys for joining us and as always take with us here on scouting the fans part of the three-odged preparing podcast all support the five reasons sports network as always y'all go fans
