- 0:06Well, I hope you're all set now for the ballgame with plenty of the crisp, refreshing Valentine beer.
- 0:12See for yourself why over 5 million glasses of Valentine beer are enjoyed every day.
- 0:18We're all set now for the Yankee baseball game, so let's go down and pick up the starting lineup.
- 0:39Those are the batting orders for the first game. Copeland has just been removed from the playing field.
- 0:48Several of the members of the ground crew are doing a little work on the infield.
- 0:54There's been some scattered rain in the area, just a touch here.
- 1:00But right now it isn't raining, so there's a better rain.
- 1:06Remember there's no threats when we ask you to buy some Valentine beer.
- 1:11Just a suggestion. As a matter of fact, just take the word threat and take the age out.
- 1:21That's what it amounts to. Treat.
- 1:28Swallow and everyone to follow. Tell you why over 5 million glasses of Valentine beer are enjoyed every day.
- 1:39Got some Winston Bonk.
- 1:49Some hoes to be our game.
- 1:59Any other use of this play-by-play description without the express consent of the Yankees is prohibited.
- 2:10After a lap, about two days in the schedule, we resume today with a schedule double-headed.
- 2:18There'll be a night game tomorrow night with the A's at 8 o'clock.
- 2:22The Minnesota Twins are in Friday night at 8, Saturday afternoon.
- 2:26This will be a ladies' day and a double-header on Sunday.
- 2:30Now there'll be a night game with Los Angeles next Monday night at 8 o'clock.
- 2:36And next Tuesday night at 8, next Wednesday and Thursday afternoon is the 9th and 10th.
- 2:42The Yankees go away for three days and return to the stadium for three games on Tuesday night for 15 for the White Sox, Wednesday and Thursday afternoons for 16th and 17th.
- 2:53And that'll be all the baseball at Yankee Stadium until September the 1st.
- 2:58So you see the season is moving rapidly downhill.
- 3:05You start moving uphill about the Fourth of July or a little after that.
- 3:13In other words, when you get to the midway point, then you start running downhill in the sense that time is beginning to run out.
- 3:22Of course, maybe you ought to have a different conception of it.
- 3:25Maybe it's going uphill.
- 3:28Sometimes it seems that way when you're in the lineup race fighting for top honors.
- 3:34But the main point is that there's little time left for you to see these crucial games as the team buys for the pennants.
- 3:44And I do hope you'll make it.
- 3:49The Yankees today enter the pennant race, a resumption of the pennant race, with a game and a half lead over Detroit, a record of 65 and 36.
- 4:03The Tigers 64 and 38.
- 4:06The Orioles projected themselves back into the picture with a double win over the Yankees on Sunday.
- 4:13Eight and a half out, but 10 on the loss side.
- 4:16And 11, 101, 61 games yet to go.
- 4:27So that as far as the Yankees are concerned, the Orioles played a few more games, 14, 104, and 58 to go.
- 4:37So there's plenty of time for a lot of things to happen.
- 4:42So we'd suggest that you get your tickets on these big games coming up.
- 4:48And I might as well tell you, September the 1st, the Yankees do return after the current home stand, Friday, Saturday, and Sunday.
- 4:57They're playing Detroit.
- 5:00So why wait? Now's the time for all good men to come to the aid of themselves.
- 5:10Today, there are doubleheaders everywhere. Minnesota, Baltimore, Twineye, Los Angeles, Boston, an afternoon doubleheader.
- 5:19Washington, Detroit, a twineye doubleheader. Chicago, Cleveland, afternoon doubleheader.
- 5:24The National League.
- 5:30Philadelphia, Cincinnati, playing a twineye doubleheader. Pittsburgh, St. Louis, a night game.
- 5:38Only one, San Francisco and Los Angeles, playing one night games.
- 5:42Milwaukee, Chicago, an afternoon doubleheader.
- 5:47This game will be just a few minutes tardy and starting due to the fact it started to rain a bit here at a time when the pitchers were delayed and starting to warm up.
- 6:05So if any questions you folks would like to ask, oh no, we can't do that, can we?
- 6:10You know, years ago, Russ Hodges, he's working, we used to do a show in which we'd allow people to call us up before the regular game, and we'd do that once a week.
- 6:28But unfortunately, we had one bad aspect to it. There were too many people who couldn't get through.
- 6:37In other words, in 15 minutes, half a dozen people or so got through. Hundreds and hundreds couldn't, so you'd make more enemies than friends.
- 6:45That's easy to do in this business, without trying, I mean.
- 6:51Like someone the other day mentioned, the other day we forgot when we asked the fans to stand, old timers say, to remember all those players that passed on.
- 7:05Inadvertently, we lucked out the name of Mel Ott, although we had mentioned it a year ago, but we were not trying to mention everyone's name.
- 7:14But that was the only thing they could remember the whole day.
- 7:18So, in any case, the point of it was, it was not an intentional omission.
- 7:24Otto was one of my best friends. I was master's ceremony years ago.
- 7:30At a Mel Ott night at the Polo grounds, and we used to do the home games of the Giants as well as the Yankees.
- 7:37So, you see.
- 7:42And looking, we see Hank Bauer at Yankee Stadium for the first time as a manager. And coming out to home plate representing the Yankees is Frank Crissetti.
- 7:52As you know by now, Ralph Houch has been suspended for five days for a run-in with umpire Ed Hurley after the game on Sunday.
- 8:04I'm far Hurley charging this, uh, Houch bumped him.
- 8:12Near the, uh, his weight of the dugout.
- 8:16The story, uh, actually was seen on TV, Yankees take the field.
- 8:28And it remained for people to make up their own minds about that, uh, situation. I just talked to Ralph. He's going to watch the game.
- 8:36He's allowed to put on a uniform and be with the players until the start of the game.
- 8:40Now he's in the clubhouse taking off the uniform. He's going to sit there and watch it on TV.
- 8:44And right now he'll be listening to our national anthem.
- 8:59All rights due to the U.S. Department of State, state, and current noise protection authorities...
- 9:44Yo-Yo White brought down to third base coaching position and going down to first base, Dario
- 10:03Lodajane.
- 10:04The Yankees and the A's.
- 10:07Jim Archer will be doing the pitching, the battery for Kansas City Archer and Zignitano
- 10:17and for New York, Ford and Howard.
- 10:21And the best batter in all, baseball and Valentine.
- 10:25Whitey today is seeking his 20th victory.
- 10:30He's won 19 and lost 2.
- 10:32This will be his 26th start.
- 10:35He has never become a 20-game winner.
- 10:38He has won 19 before, he won 18, never a 20-game winner.
- 10:44Now, I think that when you make that statement, the statement should be qualified.
- 10:50There were times he might have been, but there were years when he was used as a spot pitcher to this extent.
- 10:57They would save him for the top team, large, not exclusively, but largely.
- 11:04This year, Ralph Houser decided to start him every four days.
- 11:09Wherever it didn't make a difference who it was, whenever his turn came up, that was it.
- 11:18So, we're set to go.
- 11:22Ford is bringing nothing against the A's this year.
- 11:29Ready to pitch to little Dick Houser, batting 266, right-hand batter.
- 11:32The windup, the first pitch of the game is in there.
- 11:35Black one, call.
- 11:38Joe Paparotta for the right-hand.
- 11:39Ed Rungamp firing at first.
- 11:41Sam Carrigan in second.
- 11:42Cal Drummond at third.
- 11:45Houser, quick.
- 11:47Right-hand batter.
- 11:48The pitch is swung on and popped up into short.
- 11:52The center, Kubek goes out.
- 11:53Mandolin, Kubek makes the catch and is a ball away.
- 11:59Now, Wing Cosby, batting 310.
- 12:06Left-hand hitter.
- 12:08Last year was Vancouver, batted 265.
- 12:17Kubek Gardner comes over to talk to Whitey Ford for a moment.
- 12:26Sleep Boyer jammed a thumb on Sunday.
- 12:29It stayed on in anyway.
- 12:32That's the game.
- 12:38Whitey gets that.
- 12:39Swings for the windup, the pitch of the left-hand batter is swung on,
- 12:42a bouncer at out to second.
- 12:43And played by Richardson over the first ten times.
- 12:49He had to play it on that tricky in-between hop.
- 12:52He had to get rid of the ball in a hurry because he moves quickly.
- 12:55Two down and up comes Leo Posada, hitting 255.
- 13:05Norm Seabron on deck.
- 13:07Serve, Mandolin, Maras in the outfield.
- 13:11Ford goes to the windup and the pitch is a ball that bounces into the dirt.
- 13:17It's the place, ball one.
- 13:19One-nothing count.
- 13:28One ball, no strikes.
- 13:32Now the windup and the pitch.
- 13:34Fastball is a little high ball, too.
- 13:37Right off of it.
- 13:41Leo Posada.
- 13:45This fellow can hurt you now and then.
- 13:53The two-nothing takes the right-hand batter, and there's strike one, two and one.
- 14:01Two balls, one strike.
- 14:12Two-one delivery. Fastball is hung on and missed.
- 14:15Strike two.
- 14:16I believe that was a slider.
- 14:17I'll take that back.
- 14:18Came up there looking like a fastball, but it slid.
- 14:25Two balls, two strikes.
- 14:37The two-two pitch.
- 14:39Fastball is hung on and missed. Strike three.
- 14:42The guy is retired.
- 14:43No runs, no hits, no errors, no one left on.
- 14:47And at the end of the first half, the first inning, Kansas City nothing, New York coming to bat.
- 14:54Take it all to six-back.
- 14:56Jolly, jolly, take it back.
- 14:58Take it all to six-back.
- 15:00A ball down the line will have one back.
- 15:02Six-pack a beer, six-pack a beer, so quickly, reflecting any time. Valentine, Valentine, so nice.
- 15:11Valentine, just right, it's a great, great, great Valentine.
- 15:17Happy on that man's holy Valentine can.
- 15:21Take the jolly six-pack, jolly, jolly six-pack home today.
- 15:27Next time, take along a six-pack, a jolly six-pack of Valentine beer.
- 15:33It carries with ease, cools in a breeze.
- 15:36And best of all, it gives you six icy cold cans of the crisp refresher.
- 15:42Take the jolly six-pack, jolly, jolly six-pack of ice cold Valentine beer.
- 16:00The last half of the first inning.
- 16:04Bobby Richardson, Tony Kubek, and Roger Maris coming up.
- 16:08Six-foot, 190-pound, 28-year-old left-hander Jim Archer with a record of seven and five.
- 16:16He can be a troublesome guy, but his sharp breaking stuff goes to the windup and the pitch.
- 16:22Low outside, ball one.
- 16:24Gives you a lot of that slow stuff.
- 16:26He mixes in the fast from now and then.
- 16:32Beat the Yankees in the stock 4-3 this year.
- 16:36Now the pitch, long on, lined over third.
- 16:38Down the left field line, it's a fair ball.
- 16:40Bounding out along the line, Bobby turns first, flies to second, and goes in with two bases.
- 16:50The throw-in gets away from Cosby, but backing up a big maternal.
- 16:54It's a double for Richardson.
- 16:59Bobby's tenth double.
- 17:03I get a kick out of watching Bobby run for an extra base.
- 17:07You got both arms out to...
- 17:09Blowing out like the wings of an airplane for ballast.
- 17:16Here's Tony Kubek batting 287.
- 17:20He's shortened up at third.
- 17:26Jim Archer to the stretch.
- 17:29And the pitch.
- 17:31Bow to the right of the plate, strike one on a half swing.
- 17:36You see the object of a hit or falling, a man who opens with two bases.
- 17:43To try, if possible, to hit the ball on the ground to the right side of the infield back.
- 17:48To move the man over to third where he can score on out.
- 17:52He doesn't try to always give himself up as such unless he just is up at the front.
- 17:57Archer ready.
- 17:58Swung on, it's grounded to the right side in through the right field for a base hit.
- 18:03Richardson around third, comes on in to score.
- 18:06Come to nothing, New York.
- 18:26Tony Kubek singles to the right for a score of Bobby Richardson and it's 1-0 in New York.
- 18:38Roger Maris steps up batting 280.
- 18:47Man on deck.
- 18:52Jim Archer's beaten the Yankees twice actually and there's two strikes against him.
- 18:57End of the stretch, looks over at first.
- 18:59The pitch to Rod, just swung on, grounded to Seabrook, steps on first.
- 19:03Both the second attack, double play on a great play by Seabrook.
- 19:09Norm didn't get off the bag too far.
- 19:13As Maris Wong had a hard shot inside the bag.
- 19:18Seabrook ducks back, spirit of steps on first, threw down the Hauser to double up Kubek.
- 19:27Throw there two down, up comes Mantle batting 329.
- 19:36Jim Archer now with two down, nobody on, concentrate on the hitter completely.
- 19:41The pitch is in there for a strike, nothing in one.
- 19:50Seabrook is just starting to dance off, he has danced off about another foot, that ball would have been a double.
- 19:57Here's the one strike pitch to Mantle, swung on, bow back, they threw him a change up, nothing in two.
- 20:06No balls, two strikes.
- 20:16Two strikes, two outs, nobody on.
- 20:20Archer into the wind, up around comes the left arm and the pitch is low outside.
- 20:25He showed him a fast ball, the waste pitch.
- 20:33One, two counts.
- 20:38Now let's see what he tries to make him hit, or not hit.
- 20:41And the pitch, swung on and bow back, smoke curve.
- 20:51Look at the kids find the popcorn.
- 20:55Double feature today, one ball, two strikes.
- 21:07Jim Archer into the wind, up around comes the left arm, the pitch and Mantle swings and misses out of thanker.
- 21:13Track three, Dodger dies.
- 21:18One run, two hits, no errors and no one left off.
- 21:22And that's the end of the first inning, New York won, Kansas City, nothing.
- 21:29The batteries are delayed.
- 21:34In Boston it must be raining up there too.
- 21:45New York, we have a night game here tomorrow night with Kansas City.
- 21:56At eight o'clock Minnesota Friday night, Saturday afternoon, ladies and gentlemen, a doubleheader Sunday.
- 22:01And a make-up game with Los Angeles next Monday night.
- 22:06Appears as an open date on most of your schedules, except some of the new revisions have been sent out.
- 22:12Night game with LA next Monday night.
- 22:16Tuesday night, regular schedule night game and Wednesday afternoon the ninth, Thursday afternoon the tenth.
- 22:27Norm Sebring leads off in the second inning for Kansas City.
- 22:34It seems to be a little bit in the air when you're playing a team that's down on the standings, but those are the teams that can hurt you most.
- 22:47The team's fighting for pennants as they try and gear up against them.
- 22:52Forward to the wind, up the pitch to Sebring.
- 22:55Inside, ball one.
- 22:58Norm hitting 295. Lumpy and Darren Johnson to follow.
- 23:05Wides to the wind, up and the sidearm pitch is swung on and hits foul on the first base line.
- 23:10Strike one, one and one.
- 23:16A line drive that landed foul beyond first base called by Ed Runge at once.
- 23:26Fastball, one strike.
- 23:35No understanding, pretty far away from the plate.
- 23:37Forward, six and overhand fastball that's in there.
- 23:40Strike two, one and two. We've got the inside corner.
- 23:43A one and two count.
- 23:51Now let's see if he comes sidearm with a curve.
- 23:54He's into the wind up, the sidearm curve is swung on and grounded to second.
- 23:59Forward gets over, takes the toll from Richardson.
- 24:02In time, Moose had gone wide to the right.
- 24:09You can see a pattern every once in a while.
- 24:11Forward gets two strikes on a left-hand batter.
- 24:14He's still frequently, especially if he comes with an overhand pitch for the second strike,
- 24:18he'll come sidearm with a sweeping curve.
- 24:23Now he may not continue that the next time he were to get a sweep and two strikes.
- 24:28He might, he depends on the type hitter.
- 24:31He might change the pattern on him.
- 24:33Right now here's Jerry Lumpy batting 290.
- 24:42The delivery fastball swung on and missed, strike one.
- 24:48No balls, one strike.
- 24:55Outfield straight away for Jerry.
- 25:01Gardner shortened up at third.
- 25:04Forward into the wind up and the pitch is swung on and bounced foul down the first base line.
- 25:10Whitey came in with about a three-quarter motion, somewhere between an overhand and sidearm.
- 25:16He's picked up a few new tricks this year.
- 25:18We watched him.
- 25:23Motion is so much a part of pitching.
- 25:25Takes Stu Miller.
- 25:29There's a lot of guys, of course you would.
- 25:32He gets you out on that motion.
- 25:34They just swing at that motion and the ball isn't up the plate yet.
- 25:38Comes side delayed, male.
- 25:40Here's the pitch and it's inside.
- 25:43Or did it hit the bat?
- 25:44I couldn't tell. It hit the end of the battery at the ground.
- 25:49I see some fingers, Mr. Ompire.
- 25:57Go board has nothing in two.
- 25:59Did you think it hit the end of the bat?
- 26:05Yeah, I couldn't tell. It hit the end of the middle of the bat.
- 26:10Forward into the wind up and the pitch.
- 26:13It's over the inside corner for 12-track 3, overhand fastball.
- 26:18That overhand fastball is something these fellas haven't seen yet.
- 26:22Whitey has been coming up for that since last he saw.
- 26:30Here's Darren Johnson.
- 26:34He's at 14 out of 102.
- 26:41Whitey has 150 strikeouts now for the season.
- 26:44Pitch to the right hand batter, swung on and hit the foul.
- 26:47Right of the plate, out of play.
- 26:54That's his career high for total strikeouts in the season.
- 26:59At 145 in 1958.
- 27:03One to nothing, New York, second inning.
- 27:08Darren Johnson, who's got a lot of power, he can't make a mistake with him.
- 27:11Forward to the wind up and the pitch is a change up, swung on, hit high to left.
- 27:16There goes serve back to get under it.
- 27:19And he has it at the running track.
- 27:22Drive's retired.
- 27:24No runs, no hits, no errors and no one left on.
- 27:28At the end of an inning and a half, New York won, Kansas City nothing.
- 27:33The C-R-I-S-T, the Crispy Fresh Year.
- 27:41To be crisp of ear must be icily light.
- 27:45The Crispy Fresh Year is icily light.
- 27:48With true lager flavor is icily right.
- 27:51The Crispy Fresh Year is icily right.
- 27:54Lively golden, crispily clear.
- 27:57The Crispy Fresh Year, Crispy Fresh Year.
- 28:00Valentine, Valentine, year.
- 28:03With your first swallow and everyone to follow, today's Valentine delivers a sunny, mellow taste that really refreshes.
- 28:10Since people know quality when they taste it, over five million glasses of Valentine beer are enjoyed every day.
- 28:17So clap your hands, clap your feet, clap your fingers.
- 28:23And that's the last one, Valentine, the Crispy Fresh Year.
- 28:28Valentine, Valentine, year.
- 28:32Since 1840, America's finest.
- 28:41In the last half of the second inning, Elston Howard leads off, Gower on deck serve to follow.
- 28:49Howard batting.351.
- 28:51Left handed Jim Archer's pitch is over the inside corner, strike one.
- 29:00Outfield straight away.
- 29:04Archer's next delivery.
- 29:06Outside, ball one, one and one.
- 29:10A one and one count on Howard.
- 29:15Wind is blowing in from right out toward left up high.
- 29:19Now the pitch, swung on and fouled back, strike two, one and two.
- 29:34One ball, two strikes.
- 29:36Archer to the windup and the pitch.
- 29:39The slow pitch is swung on and fouled off to the right of the plate, out of play upstairs.
- 29:51Looking warm to throw the sinker.
- 29:57Archer again to the windup and the pitch.
- 30:00Swung on and missed as he crowded him with a fastball.
- 30:04He knows how to pitch, I'll tell you that.
- 30:09I'd say the Yankees are in for an interesting ball game, the looks of him.
- 30:14Here's Phil Scow.
- 30:18Hitting 273.
- 30:29Archer into the windup and the pitch.
- 30:32Down there, strike one, getting out in front of him.
- 30:45Down the left hander into the windup, delivers.
- 30:48Slow pitch is swung on and grounded off the second.
- 30:51Nice shot by Lumpy to throw the first inside.
- 30:55Garron tried to hit the curve to right field, almost got it through the hole.
- 30:59Swung to his left quickly, ranged far and came up for the ball.
- 31:04Two down, here's Bob Serves, heading 222.
- 31:24Archer pitches to Bob, low curve over, strike one.
- 31:27He's got a lot of pitches, low curve, sharp breaking pitch, rider, sinker, fastball.
- 31:35He uses them all.
- 31:37And the pitch, fastball inside, one and one.
- 31:43One ball, one strike.
- 31:49And the one and one pitch.
- 31:52Inside, ball two, two and one.
- 32:03Two balls, one strike.
- 32:12The two one pitch to Big Bob.
- 32:14Swung on, lined over Serves down the left field line.
- 32:18Garron chases it, Serves turns first, he's heading for two, here's the throw and Bob slides and he is safe.
- 32:25Ball actually got by Lumpy and hit Serves as he came in.
- 32:33Double the left for Bob Serves.
- 32:39His seventh double.
- 32:41And that's the only pitch and he may discard that one or except move it over, different position.
- 32:47Richardson hits that slow curve, it hung inside and slapped it over Serves for a double, as did Serves just now.
- 32:55Here's Billy Gardner batting 243.
- 33:03Billy hits all fields.
- 33:06He looks for the curve, it's out away from him, he'll try and go to right field, otherwise he'll pull.
- 33:11Archer's pitch, over the outside corner, strike one, nothing and one.
- 33:23Two down in the second inning, one to nothing, New York.
- 33:31Jim Archer again to the stretch and the pitch.
- 33:35Swung on and hits foul down the right field line out of play, strikes two, nothing and two.
- 33:51Now Fowler's bringing Darren Johnson in a little bit in right field.
- 33:56Figures, as we were saying to you before, if he tries to get the base at the right he had a better chance than throwing Serves out of the plate.
- 34:05No ball, two strikes and the pitch.
- 34:09It hits him on the elbow.
- 34:12It's inside and Gardner is hit by a pitch ball.
- 34:19He's where he wanted to be, Whitey Ford's coming up, he wants a chance to drive the run in.
- 34:30Now they're trying to get Posada's attention in left field, Bauer.
- 34:37And Glick David's come in.
- 34:42That's a good count in the daisies out there, this is your forward stop, you have to play back at the fence.
- 34:50Two down, the pitch.
- 34:52In there, strike one, nothing and one.
- 34:58It was a different gesture than just the easy motion of Fowler and he just made that quick gesture.
- 35:08Indicative of an orange to some degree.
- 35:11Here's the pitch and it's over, strike two, nothing and two.
- 35:16Two on, two out, two strikes.
- 35:20One nothing, New York, last to the second.
- 35:24Ford with 12 hits in 25 games, fighting 179.
- 35:30Nothing and two to count on Whitey and the pitch.
- 35:34No runs, ground ball hits the second. Lumpy up with it, throws on to Seabrook and the side's retired.
- 35:42No runs, one hit, no errors and two left on.
- 35:46At the end of two innings, New York one run, three hits, no errors, two left on.
- 35:51The A's three up and three down.
- 35:54New York is a summer festival.
- 35:57And the A's come to baseball games at Yankee Stadium, a part of the panorama that is the summer festival of New York.
- 36:08We pause for a festive station identification.
- 36:23Yankee baseball exclusively yours over 1460 radio, WOKO Alton in New York.
- 36:29In 30 seconds, one minute past two.
- 36:36Elsewhere, Los Angeles and Boston have scored at the ten of an inning and a half.
- 36:40Donahue and DeLock in their first game.
- 36:43And Chicago, Cleveland double-hitter, by the way, will be denied.
- 36:47All the rest of the action tonight.
- 36:50The National League, Milwaukee, Chicago, first game be Willie against Hobby.
- 37:01Now in the first of the third, Vickentano, Delgret Co, Archer coming up.
- 37:09Bottom third of the order.
- 37:13And the fourth, trying to get his 20th of the year for the first time in his career.
- 37:23Goes to the windup and the pitch, the right-hand batter is inside, ball one.
- 37:33Vickentano batting 263.
- 37:37Outfield straight away.
- 37:39The windup and the next pitch is a fastball over, strike one, one and one.
- 37:48One ball, one strike.
- 37:53The one-one pitch.
- 37:55And the next pitch is going on a foul off out of play upstairs, one and two.
- 38:03One ball, two strikes.
- 38:12Thirteen's leading of the year between these two teams.
- 38:15Yankees are one-nine, the A's three.
- 38:17Yankees are five and one at home against them and four and two away.
- 38:23Forward to the windup, the one-two pitch, curve is swung on, hits deep to left, serve.
- 38:28He's got it at the running track and has it.
- 38:34Now Bobby Delgrecco.
- 38:41Came to the A's from the Phillies.
- 38:44West Covington going to the Phillies and the A's.
- 38:51Delgrecco, ten for 51, batting one-nine-six.
- 38:56That was with the Yankees briefly at one time.
- 38:58Here's the pitch, swung on a grounded foul, strike one.
- 39:01They had him for defensive purposes.
- 39:05He can go get the ball.
- 39:11Nothing and one to count on, Bobby.
- 39:18Whitey goes through his windup and the next pitch is low and inside, ball one, one and one.
- 39:24The wind is picked up.
- 39:26Going out toward left is pretty good pace.
- 39:35The one-one pitch to the right-hand batter, swung on and foul,
- 39:38backstrike two, one to nothing, New York leading, third inning.
- 40:00One ball, two strikes.
- 40:05Whitey swings through the windup, here's the pitch, fastball swung on,
- 40:08it's a high fly ball and a short left.
- 40:12Little bit to left center, serve under it, has it, and they're two away.
- 40:17He's made the last three footouts.
- 40:21All right-hand hitter is hitting to left field.
- 40:23Now Jim Archer is coming up, two for 33.
- 40:29The Cows are to follow.
- 40:44Cows are popped out.
- 40:45Rather, Archer up right now, takes a strike.
- 40:48The Cows are on deck.
- 40:51Nothing and one to count on, Archer, right-hand hitter.
- 40:55Gardner shortens up a little at third.
- 40:59Forward into the windup and the pitch is a curve, foul off.
- 41:02Ball bounced up and hits the pitcher and kicked off into third territory.
- 41:06Nothing and two.
- 41:09One to nothing, New York, it's the third inning.
- 41:23Serve and left, Madeline center, Maris and right.
- 41:26Outfield shortens a little for Archer.
- 41:29Here's the two-strike pitch, fastball swung on and missed strike three.
- 41:35Ward records his third strikeout as 151st of the season.
- 41:39He retires the A's in order over the first three innings.
- 41:43No runs, no hits, no errors, no one left on.
- 41:47At the end of two and a half innings, New York won, Kansas City nothing.
- 41:51And now coming to you live from Yankee Stadium,
- 41:55I've thought about two very important things that go into a truly fine beer.
- 42:00The first is lightness.
- 42:02The second, flavors.
- 42:04To really refresh, a beer must have lightness plus a lot of beer flavors.
- 42:09And that's where the Chris Professor Valentine beer comes in.
- 42:13Of course, it actually comes into the stadium through our truck to deliver it here.
- 42:18But I mean, you know, you know what I mean.
- 42:24If you don't, you ought to try and find out.
- 42:28Valentine combines the best of both, talking about lightness and flavor,
- 42:34to deliver the taste you've been searching for in beer.
- 42:38So call off that search. Call in Valentine.
- 42:45Taste, get that taste, sunny, mellow, as crisp and refreshing as all outdoors.
- 42:52If lightness alone won't do for you, if you want a beer with flavor too,
- 42:56then make the good old three-ring sign and ask the man for Valentine.
- 43:00People know quality when they taste it.
- 43:02And that's the reason why over five million glasses of the Chris Professor enjoy it every day.
- 43:07Valentine beer, top of the New York order, last of the third.
- 43:11Bobby Richardson swings with the high fly ball in the short left center.
- 43:16And the ball is being caught by Leo Posada.
- 43:20With Del Grecco suddenly slowing up,
- 43:23out of the shortstop going out, suddenly slowing up.
- 43:26They hollered Leo, I guess, and he kept coming.
- 43:29Looks for a moment, if all three were offstop.
- 43:34Bobby flies the short left center through left feet of Leo Posada.
- 43:40Bobby is doubled in the first inning and scored on Kubek singles.
- 43:44Tony up night in 289. Jim Archer is picked low outside, ball one.
- 44:01The one nothing delivery, swung on and missed, grounded him with a fast ball, one-one.
- 44:16One ball, one strike.
- 44:19And the one-one pitch.
- 44:21Third ball is swung on and grounded to second.
- 44:24Lumpier for this, flips on the three-ring and they're two away.
- 44:29Now Roger Merritt, who's hard grounder, was turned into a double play by Ciber in the first inning, batting 279.
- 44:43Archer to the windup and the pitch, high ball one.
- 44:51The Yankees have really been getting the left-handers thrown at them.
- 44:56They will as often as possible.
- 44:59And the pitch, swung on and missed, strike one, one-one.
- 45:15Now the one-one pitch hits outside.
- 45:31The next delivery swung on and grounded foul on the first base line, 2-2.
- 45:36Since the White Sox came in last Tuesday, the Yankees have gotten at least four on the right field line out of play.
- 45:49Low curve.
- 45:55The Yankees generate more power against the right-hand pitchers because they can put more power on the lineup among left-hand batters.
- 46:05So they throw left-hand pitchers against them.
- 46:10A 3-2 delivery, swung on foul back out of play, which is what I would do if I was managing against them.
- 46:22Left-hand pitchers and off-speed pitchers like Kenny Brown, Wilhelm, are right-hand pitchers.
- 46:29That also helps neutralize their power.
- 46:39Three balls, two strikes, two outs.
- 46:41Third inning, one-up in New York.
- 46:43Jim Archer's picked on the way, swung on and popped foul.
- 46:47Back to Stignato, but the ball is out of play.
- 47:02Four counts.
- 47:13At the end of the wind-up, here's the pitch. Look out, it's inside ball four.
- 47:18Marathwa.
- 47:21Tried the sidearm pitch and almost hit him with it.
- 47:25Brings up the mantle, hitting 3-28.
- 47:28Stuck out in the first inning.
- 47:30Nick has suddenly gone into a slump.
- 47:34He hasn't had a hit in a few times fast and consecutively.
- 47:41Thinks it's about Saturday.
- 47:46Two away.
- 47:50And the pitch.
- 47:52Outside, ball on. One ball, no strikes.
- 48:02One-to-nothing New York, third inning.
- 48:07Jim Archer's stretch and the pitch. Swung on, grounded to score.
- 48:11Up over to Hauser, flips on over to Lumpy.
- 48:14And that forces Marathwa, and the side is retired.
- 48:19No runs, no hits, no errors, and one left on.
- 48:24Struck him out on a sinker in the first inning, made him hit one here in the third.
- 48:28At the end of three innings, New York one run, three hits, no errors, three left on.
- 48:33And the A's zero all the way around. Mantles at one out of twelve.
- 48:39As you will know if you watch the score, long enough, all hitters have their moments and suddenly they cool off and they get hot again.
- 48:49Saying the words of the manager is he hopes they're biting through off at the same time.
- 48:56However, when you're warm, we all hope that you cool off all the time with Valentine.
- 49:01And a thirst will be happier when you take along six packs of Valentine beer.
- 49:08Los Angeles and Boston scoreless end of two innings, Donahue and DeLon.
- 49:17And that's all we have to report right now, except Milwaukee, Chicago will be willing against Bobby.
- 49:28Short of the fourth inning is the top of a Kansas City order, shortstop coming up, Dick Houser.
- 49:35I can think. No better foul to tell you about what a shortstop does than shortstop Phil LeZou, though.
- 49:44Oh, okay, now the first pitch to Dick Houser is on the outside corner, strike one, call.
- 49:56Houser pops with a shortstop in the first inning, Whitey Ford ready.
- 49:59Fastball hit on the ground is short, Kuvac to his right, he's up with it, the long throw is high and Houser's off the space.
- 50:05The throw pulls Scharren off the bag and Houser, who can go down that line, beat it out.
- 50:10It's an error charged to Kuvac.
- 50:14Tony went far to his right, came up with the ball, seemed to hesitate a moment, then tried to put a little extra on it.
- 50:21And the ball was high enough that Scharren had a leap in the air, Moose got his glove on it to knock it down, but Houser was across the bag.
- 50:29And there's the first baserunner for the Kansas City A's.
- 50:32After Ford had retired the first nine men that he faced, here's Wayne Corsi, bounced the second base in the first inning.
- 50:40The Yankees lead 1-0, stretched by Ford, picked up Corsi as a curve aside, ball one.
- 50:56Billy Gardner way in the third base, Kuvac trading the left-hand headed short second.
- 51:01Ford's fastball hit deep to right field, way in the corner, and it's a fair ball, a home run for Wayne Corsi.
- 51:21A short hit off Whitey Ford, a line-line home run that just got in the front row of field, just in fair territory in the right field corner.
- 51:33Ford Corsi has fought home run of the year, and the Yankees take a 2-1 lead.
- 51:39Tony Err with Corsi, brings up Leo Posada, struck out in the first inning.
- 51:48Here's the windup by Whitey, the curve is over, strike one, call.
- 51:54Corsi got out in front of Ford's side-on fastball, and he hit a bullet right in the right field corner.
- 52:03One strike quick, the ground ball to the right side, Richardson was left up with it, throws to Skahn, one away.
- 52:12That brings up Norm Steben, who bounced out the second base in the second inning.
- 52:24Steben leaving the club in RBI's with 65.
- 52:32Big ball, left-hand hitter.
- 52:36This to Steben is a low-denise ball one, on deck Jerry Lumpy.
- 52:50One-nothing curve, long away, ball two, two-nothing.
- 52:59Nice, cool day at the stadium for this double-header, sure a lot different than it was Sunday.
- 53:07And it was close.
- 53:12There's a two-nothing pitch for Steben.
- 53:14It's over, he checked his swing, but the curve out of the play.
- 53:17Two balls, one strike.
- 53:38Now the 2-1 delivery.
- 53:40Curve ball is on the outside corner again, strike two, two-and-two.
- 53:44Ford gulps off two dandy curve balls for Steben.
- 53:58Here's the 2-2 delivery, another curve, this one just outside, Howard started to fire the ball down the third base.
- 54:04Now this time Joe Paparello stood a little outside, L.E. poked out on Norm Steben.
- 54:09One out, nobody on, the A's leading 2-1 in the top of the fourth.
- 54:18Now the playoff pitch for Steben, curve ball, it's strike three, again Steben checked his swing, but the curve was over.
- 54:26The whitey gets strike out number four.
- 54:29He's had one in each inning, giving a total of 152 on a year.
- 54:38Here's Jerry Lumpy who was called out on strike in the second inning.
- 54:49Whitey's off the line to the left field of base hit.
- 54:53There's a jump of it, and Lumpy went the opposite way that time and drilled a single pass.
- 54:59Tony Kubek and Tony tried to backhand that hot smash.
- 55:04That's the second hit off Whitey.
- 55:07That brings up Derren Johnson who's tied deep to left field in the second inning.
- 55:14Now holding first against Lumpy, two away.
- 55:20On deck, Joe Pignapano.
- 55:25That's my whitey.
- 55:27There's a low inside ball one.
- 55:36And Derren wants Joe Papparello to take a look at the ball.
- 55:40Joe does then find it okay.
- 55:55Again, whitey sets.
- 55:57Lumpy leading away.
- 55:58Their ball is over this time, one and one.
- 56:15Whitey sets.
- 56:17The fastball is low, ball two, two and one.
- 56:29The home run by Wayne Crosby was the 14th home run served up by Whitey Porth this year.
- 56:40Ready for the two-one delivery.
- 56:42Hit on the ground on the third, Gartner's up with it, goes to second base with a four-time Lumpy sliding in.
- 56:50So 40A's in the top of the fourth, they come up with two runs on two hits, one Yankee error, one man left.
- 56:57The score at the end of three and a half, Kansas City two and the Yankees one.
- 57:02A case of all the big backs, jolly jolly big backs, a case of all the big backs, across the bounce line, you have one back.
- 57:12The fear, three back, the fear, took the three, we're backing 89, battle, one, battle, nine, two, nine, battle, nine, just whitey's in fifth, three, play your bounce line.
- 57:26The score at the end, only a bounce line, and a case of all the big backs, jolly jolly big backs, of today.
- 57:35Next time, take along a six-pack, a jolly six-pack of Valentine beer.
- 57:41It carries with ease, cools in a breeze, and best of all, it gives you six icy cold cans of the crisp refresher.
- 57:50It carries along with a six-pack, jolly jolly six-pack of Valentine beer.
- 57:57Elston Howard leads off for the Yankees here on the bottom of the fourth, New York trailing two to one.
- 58:23The Yankees are in the lead with a 3.65 batting out of it.
- 58:27Howard takes the two ball outside, ball two, two and nothing.
- 58:31On deck, Bill Stauer.
- 58:40Watch his serve is low inside, ball three, three and nothing.
- 58:52He takes right in there, strike ball.
- 58:54Joe Papparello calling balls and strikes.
- 59:01He comes back in a hurry with a fast ball, it's low, it's time, ball four.
- 59:07Howard walks, and that's the first second base on balls given up by Arthur.
- 59:13He walks now, it's in the third inning.
- 59:17Bill Stauer who bounced the second base in the second inning.
- 59:25Pitch to the Moors who's in there, strike one, called.
- 59:33Stephen holding first against Howard.
- 59:39Left-hander Pitch, the pitch to the ground ball, the third, causey.
- 59:42To Lumpy for one, back to first, and Stephen drops it in the second hole with a throw within the dirt.
- 59:47It will not be an error for Stephen.
- 59:49Lumpy's throw bounced in the dirt, and Stephen got his glove on it and then dropped it.
- 59:54No error on the play, it'll go as a fourth play.
- 59:57From third to second, Lumpy hurried his throw, he went quite a bit of time.
- 1:00:02And Stauer is safe at first.
- 1:00:04It'll be a bounce to Herb who doubled in the left-field corner in the second inning.
- 1:00:14Run away.
- 1:00:19Pitch to serve, it's Blaine, and a missed strike, one, and serve, had a good cut of that one.
- 1:00:32Down with a short lead off first, the pitch is low, one-on-one.
- 1:00:52Watch the strikers.
- 1:00:54On one delivery, he hits his bat as he tried to check his swing.
- 1:01:00One ball, two strikes.
- 1:01:13Ready for the one ball, two strikes, pitch.
- 1:01:15Lumpy is in there, strike three, call, serve, take it, with his bat on his shoulder.
- 1:01:21Strikeout number three for Archer.
- 1:01:26Here's Dlingle Billy Gardner who was hit by a pitch ball in the second inning.
- 1:01:30Two outs, down at first, two-one, Kansas City lead.
- 1:01:34All stand for the fourth inning.
- 1:01:38Let's pitch to Gardner, ground ball to third, cause the uppercut,
- 1:01:41flips to Lumpy for the fourth on Sharon.
- 1:01:46For the Yankees in the bottom of the fourth inning, no runs, no hits, no Kansas City errors.
- 1:01:50One man left.
- 1:01:52The score at the end of the fourth full inning, Kansas City two runs, two hits, no errors.
- 1:01:55The Yankees have one run on three hits and one error.
- 1:02:01Now this is Bob Delaney and we're on the go again with the rest of the game
- 1:02:04brought to you by the Atlantic Refining Company and your Atlantic dealer
- 1:02:08who offer you Atlantic Imperial, the gasoline that cleans your carburetor and keeps it clean.
- 1:02:14The Atlantic Refining Company.
- 1:02:3685, Joe Fignatana first up and Bob Adelzak on and then it's pitch to Gil Archer.
- 1:02:50It's a two-one ball game, Kansas City.
- 1:02:53Throwing in all the fouls that were on last inning and then Wayne Carr that landed just inside the foul pole and right.
- 1:03:01The Yankee run was the first two battles of the game, a double but let's just think about two bats.
- 1:03:0624 to run behind, Dunning for a 20th win.
- 1:03:11Pitchers on the outside, things up on it, ball one.
- 1:03:17Figgiton, oh, right-hand hitter.
- 1:03:19Pitching 262.
- 1:03:21Here's Brooklyn, boy.
- 1:03:25Wings and lines of the ball down the left field line and hooks it foul.
- 1:03:33Joe Fignatana with the Ben Brookson Dodgers and his basic reason was that he wanted to sign with the ball side where he'd be close to home.
- 1:03:42You know, soon they got in the group and they went to Los Angeles.
- 1:03:47Kansas City got in there and they won it.
- 1:03:55One-one-fifth high outside, ball two.
- 1:04:00Actually, I think if there's anything that is really like quicksand, it's trying to make a decision on something rather than you stay close to home because his life didn't work out that way.
- 1:04:12There's a high five ball down the left field corner and it is coming foul into the stands.
- 1:04:21Often you have kids say, well, I want to go to college in my home state because that's where I'm going to live, make a lot of friends.
- 1:04:28And he winds up a thousand miles away.
- 1:04:36Two off the strike.
- 1:04:38First find out, spinning five, fourth, 15-hour catching.
- 1:04:42Perry will be the Yankees' start in the second game.
- 1:04:48Two-two-fifth, going on to the high foul ball over by the Yankee dugout and behind it.
- 1:04:55Joe's going to.
- 1:04:58A little friend out, Dittmar, will start in the second game for Kansas City.
- 1:05:02This is the last time that the A's will be in this year. You begin to realize, in addition to the cooler weather today, that the summer is about to get away from us.
- 1:05:13So every team that now comes into the stadium is coming in to say hello and farewell.
- 1:05:22Minnesota are in Friday night, Saturday afternoon, later day and a double-headed Sunday.
- 1:05:27Then Los Angeles comes in Monday night.
- 1:05:30This is almost called strike three.
- 1:05:32Whitey got him just above the knee.
- 1:05:35That's a six-track out.
- 1:05:38He's been 153 for the year.
- 1:05:41He has a much more strike out this year than he ever has in any one season before.
- 1:05:51He's never won more than 19.
- 1:05:54He's going up to 20, but the A's lead him by one, two to one.
- 1:05:59Up at Del Greco.
- 1:06:02Just outside, Whitey changed slightly off the five ball.
- 1:06:06Del Greco first came up for the par.
- 1:06:08He was in his hometown and he started on his baseball travels.
- 1:06:12He was in the Yankees for the two-teens.
- 1:06:15Swings and hits a high five ball deep to the left penalty.
- 1:06:18A serve goes back. He gets under it now.
- 1:06:21Unhappy.
- 1:06:24Two up, two down.
- 1:06:30And puts a gym on him.
- 1:06:33He has a lot of breaking stuff and slow stuff.
- 1:06:36He's been wasting his time, and he's beaten the Yankees twice.
- 1:06:43They haven't beaten him.
- 1:06:49Speaking about breaking stuff and slow stuff,
- 1:06:52these big Yankee batters and American League batters are still unable to realize what
- 1:06:58the few miles a giant's get to to finish up that Boston.
- 1:07:03Such a blow for one.
- 1:07:17One ball, north side.
- 1:07:29Two down.
- 1:07:32Off to the right hand batter.
- 1:07:37Swing, fouls it all.
- 1:07:42One one. The Yankees have got two back back in their shorts.
- 1:07:47Now they've got their right, but they're missing Boyer.
- 1:07:54There's a butt effort for a base hit and a miss strike two.
- 1:07:59Boyer got hit severely on the thumb of his right hand and his going hand, Sunday.
- 1:08:09Sheldon, who had to retire on Sunday, second game,
- 1:08:15between the muscle and his pitching elbow, they find that he's all right.
- 1:08:19They don't think he's going to miss a turn.
- 1:08:21He threw today in the arm responded favorably.
- 1:08:25One two pitch, like three call, a little serve on the outside corner, does an end.
- 1:08:31Six blackouts today for Whitey.

- 1:09:45This is WOKO, Albany, New York.
- 1:09:51After the fifth inning, Whitey Ford first up, Archer gives them a still terrible look, we're called tight.
- 1:09:58Whitey bounce out second to first in the second inning.
- 1:10:03Got a dozen hits to most of any of the Yankee pitchers.
- 1:10:07Swings and there's his 13th.
- 1:10:10I drive with the right field for a clean face hit.
- 1:10:12So, Whitey puts the tying run on and the first of his 12th.
- 1:10:16Swings, finger to the right.
- 1:10:1813th hit.
- 1:10:20Well, Ferry notices that. I'm sure Ralph is back up with 11, and he's going to be the starting pitcher in the second game.
- 1:10:27They're putting a jacket on Whitey at first, and it's hard to say for the notification.
- 1:10:48Okay, now Bobby Richardson with one for two steps in.
- 1:10:52In the first inning, he doubled and two-backs caught him with a single.
- 1:10:56A-3, 2-1.
- 1:10:58There's a paint job right over for 12 strikes.
- 1:11:03This fellow has wonderful close-ups.
- 1:11:11Probably hitting 2 for 3-8.
- 1:11:17A-4 ball, there's so foul in the left-field corner.
- 1:11:21We've got a lot of the crowd out here today.
- 1:11:24And, folks, it's always hard in the triple-deck fans where we sit, we cannot be back under the nudge, you know, in the third deck except out in the corner.
- 1:11:34It's always hard to try and judge just how many people are here.
- 1:11:38But I would say that this crowd today will put the Yankees just about up the one million mark on home page.
- 1:11:45That's a foul ball all the way up the first base.
- 1:11:51The Yankees are going to this ball game today, beating 27,500 saves.
- 1:11:58It's a million mark at home.
- 1:12:05A-2 tomorrow night.
- 1:12:06So if we don't get it today, we'll nail it tomorrow.
- 1:12:08For sure.
- 1:12:09Tomorrow evening.
- 1:12:11A-2, strike six, going on in line to the third baseman.
- 1:12:15That's far to throw to first.
- 1:12:17And Whitey is back.
- 1:12:18He slid in there in time.
- 1:12:21He also slid into first baseman Stephen's right foot.
- 1:12:26Tom is looking at it a little bit.
- 1:12:29Ed Runge of the first baseman, part third.
- 1:12:31You want time for all to check your foot, and Stephen says no.
- 1:12:35The line's all right.
- 1:12:37He's going to the third baseman, one down.
- 1:12:50Tony Kuvak, one for two, hitting 288.
- 1:12:54He's got wings and lines.
- 1:13:08And the crowd is calling a parry.
- 1:13:31Nice.
- 1:13:32A top double play in the first inning, walk in the third, hitting 279.
- 1:13:38As you know, Ed's the most runs by today, the home runs in the big leagues.
- 1:13:41Runs the first and second, and field double play depth.
- 1:13:43Outfield left right, a slow curve is inside, almost above the knees, and it is ball one.
- 1:13:50Cezetti coaching at third base, Moses coaching the first.
- 1:13:54And the house on a five-day suspension during the actual play of the game.
- 1:13:58Cezetti is calling the shots, game runs along except for the pitching,
- 1:14:03which Johnny Stainwell handled as a slow curve or look what I call a strike.
- 1:14:10Still has a slow breaking stop.
- 1:14:18All right, one and one, forward, with his jacket on, leads off second.
- 1:14:22Kuvak with his second hip leads off first.
- 1:14:26Marist is not in the box, time is held.
- 1:14:29Archer didn't notice it, started the pitch,
- 1:14:32and was stopped by both the play down par and the catcher.
- 1:14:36Two to one, Kansas City.
- 1:14:40Marist hitting a metal to Benach.
- 1:14:46Archer pitches one and one, and has a ground foul, back of plate.
- 1:14:52On the ball, two strikes.
- 1:14:53Will Paparello back of the plate.
- 1:14:55Ed Runger first.
- 1:14:58Dan Sharigan down second.
- 1:15:00Sal Zummer, this third.
- 1:15:07All right, the foul ball is in the tree.
- 1:15:09A new racket is out of the mound.
- 1:15:18Taking the time, I want to have a check something with his pitcher.
- 1:15:20Now the catcher settles on his honking back of the plate, and we're ready to continue.
- 1:15:29Archer steps, delivers.
- 1:15:33There's a foul kick that the catcher is unable to hold as Marist checks his swing.
- 1:15:40That was a fast curve, sort of a flat on the outside.
- 1:15:45All right, two and two.
- 1:15:53Now it is two ball, it is one ball and two strikes.
- 1:15:56That is what play down par Paparello is showing.
- 1:16:01The pitcher, the full curve, oh, I've got an out of ball too.
- 1:16:07All right, two ball, two strikes.
- 1:16:17That's very much what right on Marist.
- 1:16:22That's how it delivers, strike three, a big, small curve, and Marist is in the foul.
- 1:16:29Well, Marist knows how that feels, because he's stuck him out the first inning.
- 1:16:34Mickey is off the two, hitting three-twenty-seven.
- 1:16:39Boy, this isn't a live sound today.
- 1:16:44Oh, yes, rooting up the song.
- 1:16:52All right, one of the first and second two now.
- 1:16:58That was a bad little set.
- 1:17:05Duret takes quite a while getting the sign.
- 1:17:10Mano hitting right-handed against the left-hander.
- 1:17:12There's a fast ball, low-end style, all-wise.
- 1:17:19The owner of the Athletics, Charlie Findlay is here.
- 1:17:24General Manager, Frank Wayne is here.
- 1:17:27And Bowers waving his step down to his full ten to get somebody ready.
- 1:17:42Such a... almost.
- 1:17:46That was a full change of pace that was thinking.
- 1:17:48He just seems to have some of the close stuff just to goof him up there.
- 1:17:53He's got a good one, Kansas City.
- 1:17:57Bowers has his full ten going.
- 1:18:04Two out.
- 1:18:11Arthur Deoh, the metal plane hit the top of the short, and it is knocked down.
- 1:18:17A metal plane by Dr. Stop Hauser.
- 1:18:23He was in front of the ball, and apparently it played him and hit him on the chest.
- 1:18:27So the bases are loaded, and that's the now.
- 1:18:29Dr. Hauser.
- 1:18:33Mano gets on to the other short.
- 1:18:39Duret moves to second, fourth and third.
- 1:18:45He doesn't know what happened.
- 1:18:47He's stuck out at war.
- 1:18:52Bowers hitting 350.
- 1:18:57That hand battle.
- 1:19:00Now, Arthur, instead of being out of the inning, is still in it, even deeper.
- 1:19:07Got one more on.
- 1:19:09Now it's clean and falls back.
- 1:19:12The guys leaden and threatening.
- 1:19:18We had some showers.
- 1:19:20It's a curtailed batting practice, and I've tipped the two teams of in-field practice.
- 1:19:25Had to cover.
- 1:19:27It seemed that started five minutes late.
- 1:19:30Thereby, the second one tipped Elston.
- 1:19:34There's a high foul out of play.
- 1:19:42I guess we should say how to play by the ball players is very much in play by the folks in the stands.
- 1:19:49And a lot of how they jump and dive.
- 1:20:02The two-stack set, low outside ball one.
- 1:20:06One ball, two strikes.
- 1:20:20Now, one who caught the bulk of the All-Star game Monday.
- 1:20:27Replace from Mano.
- 1:20:31Richard hit for Mano as soon as he could.
- 1:20:34And then with Maris, and so now it is.
- 1:20:40Elston steps back.
- 1:20:49A job by the Knights innings.
- 1:21:18One ball, two strikes.
- 1:21:24Two to one, Chancel City.
- 1:21:25Three on.
- 1:21:27Off to the fifth.
- 1:21:33Left hand of Deals.
- 1:21:36Enlist for the curve at the hands on the inside.
- 1:21:39And it is 12-4-2, and this one hurt Archer.
- 1:21:42He went all over the place.
- 1:21:48He thought he was out of the inning.
- 1:21:51Are you still in it?
- 1:21:56It was a concerted holler from the athletic dugout because Tuff Weller looked over there.
- 1:22:05The two-two pitch is a curve low inside ball three.
- 1:22:12Two outs, three and two, three on.
- 1:22:21Caparola is throwing three singles on his left, two on his right to everybody.
- 1:22:29Three and two.
- 1:22:34Back for the foul again and Howard steps out.
- 1:22:42All right, Kelly's in.
- 1:22:45Hobbs is ready.
- 1:22:46DeLavaux.
- 1:22:47So the line drive on the fourth and third run.
- 1:22:49Howard comes in with a high one.
- 1:22:51Two-bet comes in with the third run.
- 1:22:53The ball comes to third base and now the mix is there.
- 1:22:56Howard shows a first for the single and it is three-two New York.
- 1:23:20So the one-run thing goes back and forth.
- 1:23:22First it was one-on New York and then it was two-one Kansas City.
- 1:23:26Now it is three-two to play for the Yankees.
- 1:23:29They all give the Yankees an extra out.
- 1:23:34Now I have Schellen.
- 1:23:38He's the seventh man to come up here in the fifth inning.
- 1:23:40He has off the two.
- 1:23:43Fitting 271.
- 1:23:48Howard gives him 43 RBI's.
- 1:23:52So the Yankees now lead three-two.
- 1:23:56Arthur goes to first base.
- 1:23:59He will return.
- 1:24:02Madeline third.
- 1:24:07John with a high five all out to center field about to go back off.
- 1:24:11He's waiting right in his track.
- 1:24:12Has it?
- 1:24:14So two runs, neither is earned on two hits.
- 1:24:19One error, little big one.
- 1:24:22And Fulton's at the end of five.
- 1:24:25Three runs, six hits and one error for New York.
- 1:24:28Two runs, two hits and one error for Kansas City.
- 1:24:32Now Lady Ford will go out to the mile for the second time with a one-run advantage.
- 1:24:39The service he can be used in today would be to pinch Ryan.
- 1:24:44Gaffield is third.
- 1:24:45Madeline Marisch.
- 1:24:47Dario Lodegianni coaching at first base to Kansas City.
- 1:24:51Jojo White at third.
- 1:24:53And Harry Thickhouse with a short stop.
- 1:24:55Right hand hitter.
- 1:24:57Second man in the league on stolen bases led only by Aparicio.
- 1:25:01Louis has got him by six.
- 1:25:05Howard choking up on the bat.
- 1:25:06Runs up.
- 1:25:07That ball up to first base.
- 1:25:09Ford feels it run to high and high and has it meet to the first.
- 1:25:15He plays that ball midway between the mound and first base.
- 1:25:19John left first base open going for it.
- 1:25:22And Ford getting off the mound straining was able to grab it.
- 1:25:25But Howard who can run had a half-step advantage on Whitey and beat him in the race.
- 1:25:31Howard is a bunch of singles to put the time around at first base.
- 1:25:38That's Madeline, the sixth inning.
- 1:25:40Hit number three.
- 1:25:44Houser's up there, 264.
- 1:25:46Here is Cawsey hitting 311.
- 1:25:48Looks about at the first of Baltimore.
- 1:25:51Wayne Cawsey, one of the first Baltimore bonus players, bonus babies they used to call him.
- 1:25:58He hit the two-run home run back to Scuback-Sherrod, housing the fourth inning.
- 1:26:04Number Houser's with the touch of steel.
- 1:26:05He's stolen 27 this year.
- 1:26:10Cawsey, left hand hitter.
- 1:26:14Takes the curve low, ball one.
- 1:26:22On board, no strikes.
- 1:26:31Gardner's up inside third looking for a bunt.
- 1:26:35Cawsey swings in third on a curve ball up around the letters and a good one-and-one.
- 1:26:45The wind is coming in from back of right field.
- 1:26:49We have had no rain since the game started, but we have had a constant flood of rain.
- 1:27:00Steady looking gray skies up above.
- 1:27:04A breaking ball in on the hands, ball two, two-and-one.
- 1:27:12Gardner at first, nobody out.
- 1:27:18Well, Houser's with the touch of steel.
- 1:27:21That's where it's considerably curtailed by the fact that Ford is...
- 1:27:27The Mastry had the reds that started warming up Ford.
- 1:27:29Well, Howard, who was on base, not in the last two runs, got the tools.
- 1:27:35Adelston's up there.
- 1:27:36We're ready to go.
- 1:27:37Whitey on the mound.
- 1:27:38Down at first base, Richardson at second.
- 1:27:40Scubackers at short third basement.
- 1:27:41It's Billy Gardner.
- 1:27:43Boy, is out with a bruise right side.
- 1:27:47The only service he can be used in today would be the pinch line.
- 1:27:53Gaffer the serve, Madeline Marich.
- 1:27:56Dario Lodegianni, coaching at first base for Kansas City.
- 1:27:59Jojo White at third.
- 1:28:01And Gary Dickhouse with the short stop, right-hand hitter.
- 1:28:05Second man in the league on a solid basis, led only by Al Perifio.
- 1:28:09Troy's got him by six.
- 1:28:12Howard choking up on the bat, runs up, munch the ball up to that first base.
- 1:28:16Dilton on the high and T, and Howard hits it to first.
- 1:28:22He plays that ball midway between the mound and first base.
- 1:28:26John left first base open going for it, and Ford getting off the mound straining was able to grab it.
- 1:28:33But Howard, who could run, had a half-step advantage on Whitey and beat him in the race.
- 1:28:38So it is a bunch single to put the time on at first base.
- 1:28:45Dilton on the short stop, Madeline, in the sixth inning.
- 1:28:48Hit number three.
- 1:28:52Houser's up there, 264.
- 1:28:54Harriet Crossey hitting 311.
- 1:28:56This is about the first of Baltimore.
- 1:28:58Wayne Crossey, one of the first Baltimore bonus players, bonus babies they used to call them.
- 1:29:05He hit the two-run home run back at two-back zero on Houser in the fourth inning.
- 1:29:11He's got the steal. He's stolen 27 this year.
- 1:29:16Sawdust left hand hitter.
- 1:29:20Takes the curve low, 4-1.
- 1:29:28On board, no strikes.
- 1:29:37Gardner's up in flat third looking for a bunch.
- 1:29:42Crossey swings and third on a curve ball up around the letters, and it is 1-1.
- 1:29:51The wind is coming in from back of right field.
- 1:29:55We have had no rain since the game started, but we have had a constant threat of rain.
- 1:30:05Dirty looking gray skies up above.
- 1:30:10A breaking ball in on the hand, ball two, 2-1.
- 1:30:18Runner up first, nobody out.
- 1:30:23While Houser's at left field, that threat is considerably curtailed by the fact that the poet is pitching and you can't get a lead on it.
- 1:30:32Nobody can.
- 1:30:34He's got a swing on, hits the right field for a face hit.
- 1:30:37There's now Gardner's way for third on the table, and Crossey holds it first with his second-stage safety.
- 1:30:44So, runners are at first and third.
- 1:30:49Nobody out.
- 1:30:53Now we have left fielder Posada, Leo Posada, right hand batter, followed by Stephen and Lumpy.
- 1:31:022-2, 2-2, 2-2, 2-2, 2-2, 2-2, 2-2.
- 1:31:04Stephen and Lumpy have the most hits on the long cloud, each having 106.
- 1:31:09So, Wiley now has got one foot in the pickle bat.
- 1:31:16It is 3-2, they were a four in the Yankees.
- 1:31:20Athletics threatening right back, infield double play there.
- 1:31:24There's a high-five ball out into left center field.
- 1:31:27Now, Maddell is moving under it. There is Howser tagging a third. Here comes the throw, and it's cut off at the mound to keep the runner at first place, and it's a tied ball game.
- 1:31:40That ball was plenty deep enough to get in and out, but we can move, it's not the first fly to the center fielder.
- 1:31:46So, it's made for Gardner at the mound, cut the throw off, Maddell had it low enough where it could be cut off.
- 1:31:52Here we are, 43-5, one down.
- 1:32:04There is Norm Steven over two, one from the Yankees, two from Kansas City.
- 1:32:11More D.O.'s low outside, all right.
- 1:32:21One and off.
- 1:32:32Speaking of coaches loaded, Gianna at first and White at third.
- 1:32:35The pitchers low outside of breaking ball ball, too. When Bow was named manager replacing Joe Gordon, he retained the coaching staff.
- 1:32:44The only change he made was the addition, he brought in Johnny Mize.
- 1:32:50Trying to help some of his hitters.
- 1:32:54And it was good to see Big John turn the dugout where the double-header started.
- 1:33:00There's a curve ball popped up in the short right field. Richardson is on Rick.
- 1:33:07How's it? Yeah, it's good.
- 1:33:13I said to Mize, I said, it's good to see you back in our baseball uniform again.
- 1:33:17Well, I guess I stayed out long enough.
- 1:33:20Now we have Jerry Lumpy who is one for two, single his last trip.
- 1:33:28He also works for the Yankees, Kansas City.
- 1:33:40Three-three ball game, 26. Quick curve over for all-time.
- 1:33:45One strike.
- 1:33:49In the second game, it'll be Terry.
- 1:33:53Went to the Yankees, Kansas City, then back to the Yankees again.
- 1:33:57And Dipmar, the star of the Kansas City, came to the Yankees and now back to Kansas City.
- 1:34:02Six, low inside.
- 1:34:10One ball, one strike.
- 1:34:14Runner at first, Wayne Causley.
- 1:34:22Absolutely back into left on Lumpy.
- 1:34:25Three-three tie.
- 1:34:30Whitey Deale, curve low outside, ball two.
- 1:34:38Good one.
- 1:34:40Wow, standing over there in the distance, I got leaning against the manager's post.
- 1:34:55Two-one-six, curve low outside, ball three.
- 1:34:59Good one.
- 1:35:01Two balls on strike.
- 1:35:16They might play a running hit.
- 1:35:22Whitey checking they do not.
- 1:35:24They just take it at the curve for a second strike.
- 1:35:27That's automatically on, three and two and two down.
- 1:35:37Ford has perfected a move over the first base curve.
- 1:35:40Nobody can just get a lead on him.
- 1:35:43Six is one on the ground ball while the first base.
- 1:35:46Cowan is up with it, goes over and makes the put-out unassisted.
- 1:35:50And it is one-run, two-hit.
- 1:35:53And at the end, five and a half innings first game, Kansas City three and New York three.
- 1:36:01If your car had a glass carburetor, you could see Atlantic Imperial Gasoline washing away the harmful dirt deposits that build up on the carburetor's lower wall.
- 1:36:11But since you can't see your carburetor work, we're going to do the next best thing and invite you to take Atlantic's clean carburetor test.
- 1:36:19Find out now just how good this fine gasoline really is.
- 1:36:24Here's how the test works.
- 1:36:26Use 100 gallons of Atlantic Imperial, then ask for a receipt with each purchase.
- 1:36:32If you're not satisfied that you're getting better performance from your car, just mail a receipt to the Atlantic Refining Company.
- 1:36:39We'll refund the average difference in cost between 100 gallons of Atlantic Imperial and the same amount of regular gasoline.
- 1:36:48Try Atlantic Imperial. It cleans your carburetor as you drive and keeps it clean.
- 1:36:55Last off, the fixer ring, it'll be Serbs, Gardner, and Ford against the standard Jim Archer at an error costing two runs last game, the 3-3 ballgame.
- 1:37:23That looks like a two ball on the outside and low on third one on it.
- 1:37:29Third doubled in the second inning and took the first back in the fourth.
- 1:37:37There's the third ball and he swings like two.
- 1:37:43The Kansas City three runs tour, the Kansas City three runs one.
- 1:37:54That's a deal. That was a knuckleball. That's something I've learned. Oh, you should see that one, John. Nice track out.
- 1:38:21The fixer started out in trouble on 55.
- 1:38:27Baltimore had him in the organization, but he never did pitch in the big time.
- 1:38:32Baltimore had him in Miami at 59 and 60.
- 1:38:43That's Billy Gardner who would go for one, just to the fifth. Swings it to five, foul, out of play alongside right field.
- 1:39:02Archer ready.
- 1:39:07There's a knuckleball on the outside. One and one. Oh, that one he threw to serve for the first time.
- 1:39:16It was really hopped up. Moses coaching out first base, Mike Corsetti coaching his third.
- 1:39:23This is one ballgame, a pitch inside ball too. Corsetti will not have to look into the dugout to get a sign.
- 1:39:34He and the pitching coach, Johnny Stain, are running things now for Manigault.
- 1:39:39There's a ground ball. Third base is up. The line up. All the way up.
- 1:39:47The knock is committed to be out here. So game time, then he has to go be in civilian form.
- 1:40:06Two, this is a fifth. Caught at the two run fifth inning. There by outside, ball one.
- 1:40:18Mighty going for win number 20. Outside, ball two. If this game doesn't take too much out of forward,
- 1:40:41pitches all up or strikes for the one. He should be pitching again, this rotation that Hoff suggested and that Ford acquiesced in.
- 1:40:52He should be pitching one of the ballgames of the doubleheader Sunday against Minnesota.
- 1:40:56Two swings with a curve ball, Mike Corsetti. Balls up around the shoulder. Two balls, two strikes. Two down.
- 1:41:14Two and Whitey strikes out. Six strikes out for Archer, six for Whitey.
- 1:41:30And the six innings total is 3-4-1 for Kansas City. 3-6-1 for New York.
- 1:41:44They play down by Joe Papparella. Most of the first base up by Ed Runge to get him halfway between first and fourth.
- 1:41:50Also another thing that Papparella was doing was he mostly yanked out on the playing field in a hurry.
- 1:42:01And I noticed he said something to Bauer on half an inning back in the same thing to Corsetti.
- 1:42:07And I think that what he told them both, told them all, that with this threatening weather this thing is going to matter,
- 1:42:13for goodness sake, don't stop to pick any Davies. Much less eat him.
- 1:42:18Now let's call for station identification.
- 1:42:22At 1460 on the radio dial, you're tuned to Quality Modern, WOKO, Albany, New York.
- 1:42:27Your station for complete New York Yankee baseball. It's three minutes after three.
- 1:42:38There we go. In the seventh inning, John Johnson, Gil Pignatano, Bobbidil Drekker, and the pitchers.
- 1:42:43The pitchers are the saver back. Four pitchers low. Ball one. Three-three ball game.
- 1:42:56Dern Johnson, the ball, range your right hand hitter.
- 1:43:00He was regarded as quite a power hitting prospect for the Yankees.
- 1:43:05He went along with Zipmong and Bielka Bailey.
- 1:43:10So sir, we're going side ball two.
- 1:43:18Two balls, a strike.
- 1:43:25Now it's a time.
- 1:43:30By the deliverer, gets his golf ball good for a strike.
- 1:43:33Just doesn't even inside.
- 1:43:36Johnson hasn't been able to get his hitting squared around.
- 1:43:411-33.
- 1:43:45Swings and has a line drive, but he's just a left center field.
- 1:43:48And it is in the alley and through. That's the racer.
- 1:43:51Johnson is always late at second and he won't stop there.
- 1:43:53Malik comes up with the ball. Here comes his throw.
- 1:43:55And Johnson comes in two-thirds for a triple.
- 1:43:58And he comes in as Sandy.
- 1:44:01Well, he got his batting takeout on that one.
- 1:44:05That was a joke.
- 1:44:07And a bad ball game when you open up an inning with a three-maga.
- 1:44:13He had it hit right in the front.
- 1:44:16This is hit number five, O'Flaherty.
- 1:44:19And now it's got the Pignatano who is 0-2.
- 1:44:24The infield has to move in hoping for a play on the runner in third.
- 1:44:283-3 Tom, Pignatano hitting 2-61.
- 1:44:32O'Flaherty has it worked on that point.
- 1:44:40This is a breaking ball too long, ball one.
- 1:44:46On the ball and up front.
- 1:44:57High outside, ball two.
- 1:45:01And now hitting in the dugout, the third has ordered back to Dutty to move back.
- 1:45:07East Bay is now about a step behind the baseline.
- 1:45:20Slide forward, loaded to pitch 2-0.
- 1:45:22Infield gone in, delivers low ball three.
- 1:45:25Pignatano has refused to take these pitches, two of them very low.
- 1:45:32All right, 3-0.
- 1:45:35Now this is far from being an automatic strike set up.
- 1:45:40Pignatano has looked at what manager Ballard may have on.
- 1:45:44White is pushing well away.
- 1:45:46Pitchers and Joe swings it to go right back to one basket pitcher.
- 1:45:49Whitey holds it on the third, throws it to third.
- 1:45:53Joe Pignatano is off.
- 1:45:55One of these thank you ma'am.
- 1:45:57Backs back at him.
- 1:45:58And here is Bobby Del Grecco.
- 1:46:07He's got five balls to left field.
- 1:46:10Either one of which would have been deep enough to get intermanned from third.
- 1:46:14Now we'll see.
- 1:46:19They got Del Grecco from the Phillies, it's just as July for Covington.
- 1:46:25Oh, that's fantastic.
- 1:46:27Now Howard goes to the mound, they call in Billy Gardner.
- 1:46:30And the discussion is of course of Covington's topics is being on the alert for a squeeze.
- 1:46:37That has to be considered.
- 1:46:39And now third base coach JoJo White comes down and talks to the hitter.
- 1:46:45Now Gardner goes back over to play third base.
- 1:46:47Moya's out with a bad tom.
- 1:46:49He got hit on his Sunday.
- 1:46:51He just tuned in.
- 1:46:52Three, three, five.
- 1:46:55And now there's Paparola talking to White and to Del Grecco saying break up this conversation.
- 1:47:01So it looks really far up above.
- 1:47:04First game with double header.
- 1:47:05Now Cresetti is going out to the mound to talk to Whitey.
- 1:47:10And he's bringing Howard in and there's Paparola now trying to break this one up.
- 1:47:17Of course one of the responsibilities which can unpower Charles is the progress of a ballgame.
- 1:47:30It has been stated that Johnny Sane would handle matters pertaining to pitches but I see that Cresetti is out there talking to Whitey.
- 1:47:48Now Gene, let me see, wait a minute.
- 1:47:50This is Gene Seaman.
- 1:47:52Notfield are going down to third base to run for Dillon Johnson and they're going to deliberately walk Del Grecco.
- 1:48:01That's kind of what Cresetti went out there to say they were going to do.
- 1:48:04So Del Grecco is going to get a base on balls.
- 1:48:07We have a pitch runner, Gene Seaman.
- 1:48:09This is the fellow that used to be with the Red Sox.
- 1:48:13Seaman is running for Johnson.
- 1:48:19Ball three and here is ball four and Del Grecco is lost.
- 1:48:26Now let's see, Hank Powell has managed first and third.
- 1:48:29He's got his pitches putt coming up.
- 1:48:32And let's see what move that Hank makes.
- 1:48:44I believe he's going along with Archer.
- 1:48:49He is.
- 1:48:54This is Jim Archer.
- 1:48:59So the runner is a question third.
- 1:49:01And Ford is talking to Richardson.
- 1:49:05I think they want the infield in double play depth.
- 1:49:08But maybe they can't because of the stretch of this fellow makes iron squeeze.
- 1:49:12That's right.
- 1:49:14They're keeping third base from Gardner inside the bag and Skahn is right off first base.
- 1:49:18And the second shortstop combination, they're halfway out.
- 1:49:22Gene Seaman is at third.
- 1:49:25Right at pitchers and Archer swings and hits it down to third base.
- 1:49:28And Gardner comes to the plate and Seaman is hung up.
- 1:49:31There's Howard running it back to third.
- 1:49:33Gardner throws to Howard and Elston tags it out.
- 1:49:39Howard is now at first and stuck it.
- 1:49:42Looks it out.
- 1:49:44There's a third base into the cup here.
- 1:49:45Back to third base and back to the cup here.
- 1:49:50So Archer on the field of score.
- 1:49:52It's in third base.
- 1:49:58Seaman is hung up.
- 1:50:05It's still a 3-3 ball game.
- 1:50:07And now we have Dick Howard for the shortstop.
- 1:50:12So push to Montenby and beat it out 2-3 and the 6th inning he is 1-3.
- 1:50:24By 2-1.
- 1:50:27Remember the inning was for Gardner with a triple.
- 1:50:31Now they've got third base open.
- 1:50:32One is a first and second.
- 1:50:41The Bullets on the scoreboard pitching tomorrow night.
- 1:50:43Last time Kansas City's here to state in the field.
- 1:50:46The Yankees daily for Kansas City's Shaw.
- 1:50:49That's the ball you threw to the white box.
- 1:50:50Bob Shaw the ball from Long Island.
- 1:50:52Now the swings of a ground foul out of third base.
- 1:51:02Double off, good back.
- 1:51:08So Joe White kicking a kick on that third, the third base coach.
- 1:51:12He's mad.
- 1:51:14He's just as mad as going to go ahead and pull out in his nose.
- 1:51:19Good.
- 1:51:22You have your first time out tripling and all of a sudden you want to go out and then it's first and second.
- 1:51:28I think what he was doubly mad about was Stephen was getting off third base and getting caught in that run-up.
- 1:51:36All right, Ford led the pitch two strikes.
- 1:51:39Now let me see there, it's almost whitey taking a look back at second.
- 1:52:02He takes it.
- 1:52:13All right, one hit, two men left.
- 1:52:18And the four at the end of sixth and a half third game is tied.
- 1:52:28What does a truck driver think about as you drive?
- 1:52:31Well, a truck driver is a pretty good life.
- 1:52:34These sights to see all the time?
- 1:52:36Yeah, when you get back home after a long trip, they're waiting for you.
- 1:52:40Your own car all ready to go.
- 1:52:44Okay, lady, be my guest.
- 1:52:48Gosh, I'm glad that car of mine is running right again.
- 1:52:51Boy, remember how rough it used to idle?
- 1:52:53The way it stalled?
- 1:52:55That was a great day when Harry told me about Atlantic Imperial.
- 1:53:00You know, it's the same thing that cleans your carburetor as you drive.
- 1:53:03Yes, and keeps it clean.
- 1:53:05Now my little buggy drives like a dream.
- 1:53:13There's a man in a Winston exclusive.
- 1:53:15And it's what makes Winston America's best.
- 1:53:22I could figure it sure.
- 1:53:24Okay, Rick.
- 1:53:26Bill, let me ask you something.
- 1:53:30I noticed that the third base torch was staring up the grass.
- 1:53:33Do you think that Stevens overly committed himself to it now?
- 1:53:37I don't know, Red.
- 1:53:38As a rule, the manager says with runners on first and third and none of one out of the ball hits to the third base,
- 1:53:43they can go in and break up the doubles way.
- 1:53:47But they seemed a little upset, so maybe they had told them to stay there.
- 1:53:50I don't know.
- 1:53:55That's a good one, Penny.
- 1:53:57The Richardson, two back and now that's a three-three ball game.
- 1:54:03Well, that's a real talk of the town.
- 1:54:10I mean, one hit to three, I bet.
- 1:54:12That's a bunch to pick up outside, ball one.
- 1:54:21That's a good one.
- 1:54:26This one on there, they ball pass to the first base.
- 1:54:30Stevens passes to the fifth and every.
- 1:54:35Bobby slides in and kicks it for a base hit.
- 1:54:45Bobby straight in, went all the way out.
- 1:54:50That was just a shade late and breaking from the mound.
- 1:54:57All right, three-three ball game.
- 1:54:59Here's 20-2 back.
- 1:55:02Two singles out of three at bat, hitting 290.
- 1:55:11He was such a butt, took touches over, had it for a call strike.
- 1:55:17Well, here's up inside third.
- 1:55:22It is starting to rain, not too heavily, but it's raining, nevertheless.
- 1:55:28He's lunch and out there, up for the ball, goes to first base, two back is out.
- 1:55:32He's going to miss and want to cover it, but the back of the base are still bad.
- 1:55:47One down after the seven.
- 1:56:02That's foul outside third.
- 1:56:20Picks for the second base, one down.
- 1:56:23That's down to Jim Archadillo.
- 1:56:25Low outside, breaking ball, ball one.
- 1:56:30That's back into a double play on the first, Jimmy, walks in the third, and took out on the fifth.
- 1:56:47One-one delivery, a knuckle ball, put on a miss, right there.
- 1:56:58One and two.
- 1:57:12He delivers and has a knuckle ball down into the first base from Steven.
- 1:57:15Arch is over the first base plenty of time this time.
- 1:57:29That's a big miss on our side of the mound, talking to Arch.
- 1:57:55That's a big miss on the end.
- 1:57:59That'll suck out of the first inning, get into a fourth and a third, and hit the ground ball at the fourth stop in the fifth, which the hour was committed.
- 1:58:06That gave the Aggies an extra bat.
- 1:58:09That's a big miss on the end of the first inning.
- 1:58:25That's a big miss on the end of the first inning.
- 1:58:40That's a big miss on the end of the first inning.
- 1:59:01He delivers and it's high and tied ball three.
- 1:59:06Most of the folks who are in the box state still staying out.
- 1:59:10Let's tell you, it didn't rain that hard.
- 1:59:13Those that are out and have on balls have got them open.
- 1:59:18See nothing there. Knuckle ball is in there.
- 1:59:20He was taking no chances.
- 1:59:21It's three and one.
- 1:59:31Three balls, one strike.
- 1:59:35He works.
- 1:59:37Oh, not so far into the hand and making things on it and the count goes four.
- 1:59:41Three and two.
- 1:59:46Three balls, two strikes.
- 1:59:49This is going to third, two up.
- 1:59:54And the Yankees fail to get a man over.
- 2:00:10That's a big miss on the end of the first inning.
- 2:00:33That's a big miss on the end of the first inning.
- 2:00:45That's a big miss on the end of the first inning.
- 2:00:53It's going to be a big miss on the end of the first inning.
- 2:01:03What's the deal? What are you going to do?
- 2:01:06We've got a brand new ball game.
- 2:01:11Two innings, three, three going into the top of the eighth inning.
- 2:01:15On the scoreboard in the American League, the angels, nothing in the Red Sox,
- 2:01:19nothing at the end of five and a half.
- 2:01:20Down to you against the lot.
- 2:01:21Just one game going on now.
- 2:01:23They're watching Chicago to Cubs lead 1-0 at the end of 5.
- 2:01:26Willie against Hoppy Santo, Holman in the second.
- 2:01:34Wayne...
- 2:01:36Wayne Corsi, the batter, is...
- 2:01:39curve ball is outside to the left hand, hit a ball once.
- 2:01:42Corsi is 2 for 3, bounce the second, Holman with a man on his single right field.
- 2:01:54Next pitch is over, strike one, one on one.
- 2:01:57Corsi comes back with a slow curve, low and away.
- 2:02:09Two balls, one strike.
- 2:02:11On deck is Leo Posada.
- 2:02:23He's holding left center field for Corsi, mandolin right center, serve and straight
- 2:02:35away left.
- 2:02:36Serve is popped in the air.
- 2:02:37Tony Kubek, the shortstop, is right under it and makes the catch for the first out.
- 2:02:44The righty gets rid of a mandolin, pretty dangerous to him.
- 2:02:50Wayne Corsi brings up Leo Posada, struck out bounce the second, and a sacrifice fly
- 2:02:55in the sixth inning.
- 2:02:573-3 ball game in the top of the eighth.
- 2:03:03Another ball game to go after this one.
- 2:03:09Righty hits the Posada's high ball once.
- 2:03:17Joe Pamperello takes a look at the ball and puts it out of play, puts a new one in play.
- 2:03:41Jack Norm Seaborn.
- 2:03:55One ball, no strike.
- 2:03:57On the A's left field.
- 2:04:03Wind up by Whitey.
- 2:04:05Serve is foul-tipped back of the plate, one-on-one.
- 2:04:19All glanced off Elston Howard's leg.
- 2:04:35Now the one-one delivery, third ball foul, back of the mezzanine.
- 2:04:51Four two strikes.
- 2:05:15All right, Whitey ready. Fastball, top foul going out of play down the right field line.
- 2:05:25Now holds it one ball, two strikes.
- 2:05:27Wow, nobody on.
- 2:05:29Top of the eighth inning.
- 2:05:31Kansas City three and the Yankees three.
- 2:05:37Good to see Johnny Mize back in baseball.
- 2:05:41New batting coach for the Kansas City Athletics.
- 2:05:49Whitey's touch is a curve, pop foul back in the upper deck.
- 2:05:55The big shot, as we used to call him, I feel, wearing uniform number 39.
- 2:06:17Whitey ready again. Fastball is inside, two and two.
- 2:06:29Kansas City managing in place of Ralph House today, and Kansas City will be managing through Sunday.
- 2:06:37The two-two pitch curve foul back in the upper deck again.
- 2:06:57Two strikes, wow.
- 2:07:15Now the two-two pitch. Swing and a miss, strike three.
- 2:07:23Fastball right on by, Posada that time.
- 2:07:33Eight strikeouts for Whitey.
- 2:07:40Brings up Norm Saban, bounce to second, struck out, popped to second.
- 2:07:44You out, nobody on.
- 2:07:48Whitey's curve is outside, ball one.
- 2:07:52Whitey's eight strikeouts today, giving a season total of 156.
- 2:08:02His previous time was 145 in one season.
- 2:08:06Air is over, strike one, one, one.
- 2:08:19Back in the upper deck, Jerry Lumpy.
- 2:08:26Another curve, foul back in the upper deck.
- 2:08:29One ball, two strikes.
- 2:08:41No one on.
- 2:08:49Whitey turning around now, looking back towards the outfield, hands on his hips.
- 2:09:08Now Whitey checks his time from Howard.
- 2:09:13Airs his one ball, two strikes head. Low outside, two and two.
- 2:09:26Two balls, three strikes, two out. Three-three ball game in the top of the eighth.
- 2:09:37Low again, ball three, three and two.
- 2:09:44Howard now rubs up the ball while Paparello does throw a home plate.
- 2:10:06Seeburn steps out of the bat as Fox. Whitey's taking a little extra time this inning.
- 2:10:19Now the left-hander's ready. Here's the playoff pitch to Seeburn.
- 2:10:39Still three and two on Seeburn. Whitey's throwing quite a few pitches for the last two hitters, but Shana and Seeburn keep calling them off.
- 2:11:05And Whitey's taking a little too much time for Seeburn, so he has to time steps out.
- 2:11:13Down on the back end.
- 2:11:16Again the three-two pitch. Curve hit on the ground on the right side. Skye ran up with it. Flips to Ford covering in time for the out.
- 2:11:26The A's get down in order in the top of the eighth inning. Nothing is crossed. The score at the end is seven and a half. The man's a city three and the Yankees three.
- 2:11:35Here's Oscar Howard leading off against Jim Archer. Helly takes the curve in there, strike one, four.
- 2:11:41Howard's drop out walk and then single with the bases loaded and two out in the fifth inning, a drive in, two runs.
- 2:11:47He's batting three-fifty-two.
- 2:11:52Watch his one-strike pitch. It's hit on the ground at third. Quasi. Bumps it down. He can't make a play.
- 2:11:59Quasi played that ball to the side. He stepped to the side, reached his glove out, knocked it down, and couldn't make a play. It's an error. It drives to the third baseman.
- 2:12:17Bill Scharren bounced the second, bounced the third, and flied to center. Three-three to score and the lead runners at first base.
- 2:12:31Jim Archer steps off the rubber. Once again he's striking. This is low ball one on deck box third.
- 2:12:57Outside ball two, Fred Barber tells us that Joe Paparola, the play down player, says that because of threatening weather, the second game was shot precisely 20 minutes after the first game has ended.
- 2:13:13The sixth is Scharren. His low ball three, three and nothing.
- 2:13:27Looks like they might be turning the lights on here at the stadium shortly. A three-nothing pitch is right in there, strike one of the most, three and one.
- 2:13:35The third is Ferris with nobody out. She's been now playing in back of the runner at first. Short tie three, three and the last half of the eighth inning.
- 2:13:47The college goes the ball is fouled back. Now it was running but Scharren fouled the pitch back and it's three and two now.
- 2:14:08Now the stretch ready for the payoff pitch. How it goes, the ball is popped in the air to short right center. Stevens coming over from right field, under it makes the catch.
- 2:14:19Stevens who took over for Darren Johnson. That's one away and here's Bob Sturr, third double left and then struck out twice. One away on deck Billy Gardner.
- 2:14:48That's by Otter, picked the third, is outside Bob ready to lay down the bunt. This was too far away from him.
- 2:14:56They've laid down a beautiful bunt the other day. He did out for the base then. Then the stretch. The pitch, ground foul outside of first, one and one.
- 2:15:12Otter's got a pretty good school ball. He's been keeping it low and away from the right hand hitters.
- 2:15:25He's headed to the one one pitch. He's hit on the ground a base hit up the middle. Now it's close to second base and holds up. Bob Sturr with that curve ball right on up the middle. His second base hit of the game.
- 2:15:44The eighth pitch for the Yankees and it brings up Billy Gardner. Billy was hit by a pitch ball, bounce the third and then line up third base. Wayne Cawsey making a fine leaping catch as his line drops.
- 2:16:02Lui Arroyo is on the bullpen, opening up for the Yankees. Bervitt first foul at a second with one out. Four side three three, Billy Gardner the batter. The stretch by Archer.
- 2:16:16Pitch is outside ball one. Ackbauer now waving James Stephen Jinn in right field. He's got most of the outfield moved in a few steps.
- 2:16:32It's going to be another charge for the shortstop. It is. It's second to the ball game. Now it's a perfect double play ball. Haser. Haser ball hit his step. He caught it as he saw the throw. He dropped it again.
- 2:16:47time for 30. He's into a manager for the Yankees while Ralph Houch is getting his suspension out. Ackbauer is coming out to the mound. He's off with Archer and his spatcher and the infield.
- 2:17:12He's in the second to the first. He's in the second to the first. He's in the third. He's in the fourth. Ford talking with Frank Cacetti. The A's have made three others in the ball. Game two of them here in the eighth inning.
- 2:17:38The Yankees are in the third. Ball is out on the mound with Pignacano and Archer. He's been standing alongside. Whitey has bounced the second, singled and scored and then struck out.
- 2:18:06The infields are broken up now. Whitey stepping in at the batter's box. And then Archer calls the third baseman Wayne Corsi over for another huddle.
- 2:18:22The A's have to be on the alert for a possible squeeze run by Ford. The infield is pulled in. The outfield is being called in too. And now Archer will pick from a stretched position. So it's not to allow Howard to get too big a jump at third in the event, but a squeeze play is called for.
- 2:18:44Here's a stretch by the left hander. A pitch to Whitey. Curve ball popped in the air off the third baseman. Two-match-a-match score. Now the Yankee 35-3.
- 2:19:05So after all those huddles, here's Archer through a beautiful curve ball to Whitey. Whitey hit it off the end of the box. But when the infields drawn in, it landed on its end part of the infield.
- 2:19:18But 24 enough to fall in there for a base hit, allowing Howard and third to score. Gardner moves to second. The Yankees now lead 5-3. One out.
- 2:19:36Bobby Richardson, who is 2-4, doubling the single up there, takes the two ball lower ball one. So Whitey has led by the day at the plate. He's singled and scored in the fifth inning. He has singled and driven in two runs here in the bottom of the eighth to put his team in front by 3.
- 2:19:55That's by Archer. Pitch fouled in front of the plate. It's a fail. Wait a minute. Caparola called it foul. Richardson did not run as the ball hit the end of his bat. Taking the count of jumped out, picked it up.
- 2:20:11And then Caparola made the fouls time. Gardner was at third and Ford at second. Now they go back. One and one on Richardson.
- 2:20:37Kubeck on deck.
- 2:20:42Bobby is hit out in the center field. El Jeco right there. Makes the pass. That's two away. None of the runs scored by the Yankees will be earned in this inning. Tony Kubeck the batter. Tony is 2-3. Single right, single left bounce to second and sacrifice. Kubeck has driven in a run and scored a run.
- 2:21:10Two off, two on, two in. Yankees lead by two by three here in the bottom of the eighth.
- 2:21:34That's by Archer. Pitch to Kubeck. Swing and a miss strike one.
- 2:21:52And the stretch. Pitch to Pitchfile outside of first strike two.
- 2:22:08On deck, Roger Maris.
- 2:22:29Ford leads off first. Gardner off second. This strike's pitch is within the air, the right side. Bobby the second baseman is calling for it.
- 2:22:40Jerry makes the catch. For the Yankees in the bottom of the eighth, two runs on two hits, two Kansas City errors, two men left. The score at the end of eighth for them, the Yankees five and the A's three.
- 2:22:59The scoreboard in the American League, the Red Sox two, the Angels nothing at the end of seven. Donahue against the Lots. Minnesota has Baltimore. Quineyter.
- 2:23:11And Chicago with Cleveland, Quineyter has his Washington at Detroit. And then actually Philadelphia, Cincinnati for Quineyter, Pittsburgh against St. Louis tonight.
- 2:23:21San Francisco at L.A. tonight and Milwaukee at Chicago for a fair. It's tied 1-1 at the end of sixth. Willie against Bobby. Sato, Holman in the second.
- 2:23:37Whitey Ford has not come out of the Yankee dugout as yet. And here comes Whitey now.
- 2:23:59For Kansas City in the top of the ninth, it'll be Jerry Lumpy. And then Gene Stevens due to be the batter and Joe Pignatown as the catcher.
- 2:24:09We'll wait and see if we're going to have a pink hitter for Stevens who was a left-hand hitter.
- 2:24:21Lumpy with call out on strike, singles and bounce to first base.
- 2:24:31Haywood Sullivan, the big right-hand hitting catcher coming out on deck. And he'll be hitting for Gene Stevens.
- 2:24:59And he's already running for his 20th win of the year.
- 2:25:26Ready to go here in the top of the ninth inning.
- 2:25:31Jerry Lumpy steps in at the batter's box.
- 2:25:38Lumpy takes a strike for his first pitch right in there.
- 2:25:53Wind up by Ford.
- 2:25:56One and a miss, strike two.
- 2:26:24There's a curve hit on the ground. Schall and the black team get it both underneath the club in the right field.
- 2:26:43And a big hit for Lumpy.
- 2:26:56That's the sixth hit of a whitey Ford.
- 2:26:59That brings up Haywood Sullivan batting for Gene Stevens.
- 2:27:04Sullivan batting 271. Has 11 doubles, 2 triples, 3 homers and 31 runs batted in.
- 2:27:11Darren Johnson's got it in right field.
- 2:27:14And now he's got the triple and reaches to the plate.
- 2:27:18Here's the stretch by Ford. Hits the Sullivan. A curve high, ball one.
- 2:27:24Lumpy now has two bases.
- 2:27:34Stretched my way.
- 2:27:36Hits the Sullivan. In there, strike one, called one-one. Billy Gardner guarding the left field line.
- 2:27:44Schall and holding first against Lumpy.
- 2:27:54There is the stretch.
- 2:28:18Haywood Sullivan in a curve ball, way back there in the right field.
- 2:28:25Ford Sullivan has 4th home of the year, gives him 33 runs batted.
- 2:28:32And the ball game's tied up at 5-5.
- 2:28:39And the batter is Joe Picknick-Kennel, who's off the 3.
- 2:28:45Hits high, ball one.
- 2:29:00Hits high, ball two, 2-0.
- 2:29:15Two balls, no strike on the 8th catcher.
- 2:29:18Hits, strike called. Picknick-Kennel fell away from the fastball, but it has a corner. 2-1.
- 2:29:362-1 curve. Hits the left field, down to the corner. Fair ball, not far from the wall. Picknick-Kennel's second curve, slow, not as fast.
- 2:29:48That ball just narrowed, and he just hit the whole line.
- 2:29:51The ball's the fence, and here comes Frank Cicetti. Cicetti is coming out to the mound.
- 2:30:06Here is a nice hitting with the Yankees leading 5-3.
- 2:30:09Frank's hitting Almert, and Picknick-Kennel doubles. And Cicetti is out on the mound, talking with Howard and Ford.
- 2:30:22And Frank takes the ball from Whitey Ford.
- 2:30:27And Louis Royale, the little left-hander, will be coming on.
- 2:30:36Louis hops the fence, and the fans recognize him immediately as Whitey Ford leaves.
- 2:30:48Whitey Ford will look like he was intent to pick up his flier's one of the year.
- 2:30:53Going into the top of the ranks with a 2-1 lead.
- 2:30:57After fixing 8-inning plus, didn't get anybody out here in the night. Ford has allowed 8-8 to see.
- 2:31:07He's walked through, struck out 8, and has allowed 5 runs. Picknick-Kennel is second.
- 2:31:10So Whitey's responsibility should he score.
- 2:31:26Louis Royale will be coming on.
- 2:31:34Louis making his 42nd up there into the air.
- 2:31:39He's 1-7 and lost 3.
- 2:31:52And a nice saving 21 ball game for the Yankees.
- 2:32:21Whitey Ford walked only one man.
- 2:32:24I said two before, but he walked just one and had one intense night.
- 2:32:28With Bobby Del Greco in his 7th inning.
- 2:32:42Royale will be pitching to Del Greco, who is strikes by the left, besides walking.
- 2:32:47Picknick-Kennel is second with a double. There's nobody out.
- 2:33:00Royale ready. Del Greco stepping into the batting spot.
- 2:33:07Yankees will have to look for the possible sacrifice now.
- 2:33:11With the score tied 5-5 and the top of the ninth, nobody out and the runner is second.
- 2:33:23Gardner in his third. Gollins in his third.
- 2:33:27Here's a stretch by Royale.
- 2:33:30The pitch is in there, strike one, fall.
- 2:33:35Royale's starting them off with a screwball.
- 2:33:50Del Greco steps out of the box, looks down at JoJo White coaching his third, flashing a few signs.
- 2:34:04Check the signs from Howard. Here's a stretch.
- 2:34:08Pitch, Del Greco clears the mound, takes it low, one-on-one. That time he was ready to bunch.
- 2:34:13Gollins was charging in from first base.
- 2:34:33Hignazano leading off second.
- 2:34:36Stretch by Royale.
- 2:34:39Pitch, foul, back on the screen.
- 2:34:43One ball, two strikes.
- 2:35:03High-five ball game here on the top of the ninth, nobody out.
- 2:35:08Oh, he's set. Pitch, he's in the air to short left field, the curve is coming in, he's under it.
- 2:35:15Makes the catch. Three signs, Del Greco's flying to left.
- 2:35:21Jim Archer is due to be the batter.
- 2:35:27And here comes Archer, he's struck out twice and bounced into a field of strike.
- 2:35:33Bounced at third base with a round third.
- 2:36:02Archer batting right-handed, that's the end of the batter's box.
- 2:36:06Royale goes back to the rosin bag.
- 2:36:13Here's a stretch.
- 2:36:16Pitch to Archer, outside ball one.
- 2:36:25Rebecca's playing Archer over towards the hole.
- 2:36:32Hignazano trying to move Hignazano back, Joe's got a pretty good lead at second.
- 2:36:36Royale stretches.
- 2:36:38Pitch is a base hit from upfield.
- 2:36:43And it helps. They hold him up.
- 2:36:45Dirk makes a beautiful throw to the plate, they had him, Dirk was playing yellow.
- 2:36:49Joe's your white shot at the center and Hignazano then held him up.
- 2:36:54And Archer rips a single between third and short, he hit that ball hard.
- 2:37:01First hit off of Royale.
- 2:37:03And a nice hit for the A's and now with runners at first and third and one out.
- 2:37:07The fourth side, five-five, Dick Hauser is the batter.
- 2:37:12Hauser has popped a short, reached down an error in score, beat out a bunch single in score,
- 2:37:16and then was called out on strike.
- 2:37:19Now the Yankee infield really has to be on the alert.
- 2:37:21Hauser a very good batter and very sweet of foot.
- 2:37:28He's very tough to double up on a ground ball.
- 2:37:31The infield is in.
- 2:37:36Hignazano at third, Archer at first.
- 2:37:53Royale pitching from a stretch position.
- 2:37:57Time is called.
- 2:38:00Hauser steps back out of the batter's box to look down at white again.
- 2:38:15Again a Royale set.
- 2:38:18White wants to bring him into the true ball.
- 2:38:32Now it walks halfway out to the mound to tell the Royale and the infield, look out for the squeeze.
- 2:38:41Here's a stretch by Lloyd.
- 2:38:44Here comes the runner. The ball is putted foul and back of the plate.
- 2:38:48All Hauser had to do was putt that ball on the ground to anybody and Hignazano would have scored.
- 2:38:54He was better than two-thirds of the way home when the ball reached on plate.
- 2:38:59So ours at guest light, the squeeze was on, but Dick Hauser fouled the pitch off.
- 2:39:05Normally a very good batter, but in a situation like this you're a little over-anxious.
- 2:39:11We've got Arroyo, Stalin, and Gardner charging down his float.
- 2:39:16Now snuffing in two on Hauser.
- 2:39:21Here's a stretch.
- 2:39:23The pitch strikes three-twenty.
- 2:39:26Now going after a bad pitch.
- 2:39:30Arroyo strikes out.
- 2:39:34What's pitching by Louis Arroyo? And here's Wayne Cawsey.
- 2:39:38That's the second halmed with a man on single right and top the short.
- 2:39:42Still tied 5-5 with runners at first and third and two out.
- 2:40:09Stretch by Arroyo. The pitch to Cawsey was fouled to place right wide.
- 2:40:24One strike on Cawsey.
- 2:40:27Two out and two on. Two in. Score tied 5-5.
- 2:40:33Cawsey fouled that ball down off his right foot.
- 2:40:38Now it's time to get set in the box.
- 2:40:46The high-pitchers are tied to it first, Pignastano at second.
- 2:41:09That is a 1-1 pitch. There it is. And it's hit on the ground.
- 2:41:16Krubeck over second up with his steps on the ball to the out.
- 2:41:20Krubeck played Cawsey perfectly.
- 2:41:23It looked like the base hitter went right over the middle of the line
- 2:41:26and right over second base, but Krubeck was there.
- 2:41:31Well Louis Arroyo from Gardner does her job.
- 2:41:34Forty-eight in the top of the ninth two runs on four base hits.
- 2:41:38No Yankees errors and two men left.
- 2:41:41And the score at the end of eight and a half innings.
- 2:41:44Kansas City five and the Yankees five.
- 2:41:55Awood Sullivan moves in to play first base for Kansas City.
- 2:41:59Noam Siemen moves to left field from first base.
- 2:42:03And Leo Posada moves from left field to right field.
- 2:42:07And WOKO passes for station identification.
- 2:42:10This is WOKO Albany, New York.
- 2:42:13Roger, hit it with a double play.
- 2:42:15Wark struck out and bounced to third.
- 2:42:17Go outside five-five, bottom of the ninth.
- 2:42:19Rogers, sixth on the third foul back of the plate strike one.
- 2:42:36Rogers, next big fastball foul back of the upper deck strike two.
- 2:42:41Nothing in two on Maris.
- 2:42:50So why do you pull it cannot be the winning pitcher in this ballgame.
- 2:42:53He was running for his 20th win of the year.
- 2:42:55He can either be the losing pitcher.
- 2:42:58Arroyo gets him out of a jam again.
- 2:43:01This to Maris, curve outside, ball one.
- 2:43:15This, right on curve, pocket into a center field and dropped in for Maris.
- 2:43:21Maris with that ball right off the end of the bat.
- 2:43:26Archer has made some real good pitches that have backed by it on the widey fourth in the eighth inning.
- 2:43:35Widey hit off the end of the bat.
- 2:43:38Here's Mickey Mantle.
- 2:43:40Mickey is 0 for 4.
- 2:43:42Struck out right, bounced to short, reached on an error.
- 2:43:51The winning run at first base.
- 2:43:53Nobody out.
- 2:43:55Struck by Archer.
- 2:43:57Hits the matto.
- 2:43:58A wide time.
- 2:43:59Fair ball.
- 2:44:01Off the right field wall.
- 2:44:03A ground rule double.
- 2:44:05A fair reach shot and touch.
- 2:44:16Well Mickey Mantle doubles Maris in third and with nobody else.
- 2:44:21Archer with a ball.
- 2:44:26Now it will be the bar and Arroyo will get an alley and take a walk.
- 2:44:41Getting somebody ready in the Kansas City bullpen.
- 2:44:45They're also moving the outfield in.
- 2:44:50They know that a long fly will score the run.
- 2:44:53But they're giving Howard an intentional pass.
- 2:45:10Bill Scott is on deck.
- 2:45:12Was there to follow.
- 2:45:17I can see that they get that similar situation in Sunday's second game.
- 2:45:22Yankees have the bases loaded, nobody out and Bill the score.
- 2:45:26Here comes Hank Farr out and that will be all for Jim Archer.
- 2:45:32Hank Farr coming out to the mound.
- 2:45:35And we'll have a new pitcher for Kansas City.
- 2:45:40Archer has picked a beautiful ball game.
- 2:45:43He's a victim of a little jabby support on the in-field.
- 2:45:52Not in this inning as Maris single and Mantle double when he walked out.
- 2:45:57In the eighth inning the A's made two errors.
- 2:46:00Two un-earned runs and in the fifth inning they made an error.
- 2:46:06That led to a run.
- 2:46:11Two un-earned.
- 2:46:19So we'll have a new pitcher coming in for the A's.
- 2:46:34Bill Scott will be the battle with the bases loaded, nobody out.
- 2:46:37Bounce the second, bounce the third, fly to center and fly to right.
- 2:46:48Jerry Stanley is coming on.
- 2:46:53Another sinker ball pitcher, D. Lutz.
- 2:46:58Stanley is making his 39th appearance of the year.
- 2:47:02He's won one and lost four.
- 2:47:06Six feet tall, 183 pounds from Vancouver, Washington.
- 2:47:15And Archer leads.
- 2:47:34Four of the five Yankee runs in this game have been un-earned against Jim Archer.
- 2:47:42And that's the first time that Archer has not completed a game,
- 2:47:46starting against the Yankees.
- 2:47:49Diron is being called back.
- 2:47:52And we'll have a ten-killer. The Yankees have Vera, Blanchard,
- 2:47:57Ferguson, Alexander Tinkitter, and Yogi Berra is coming out.
- 2:48:26And we see where Kansas City has come up with a duplicate glove.
- 2:48:33That's the one the Baltimore Orioles have, one of those oversized backing gloves.
- 2:48:39And Tinkitter is using it with Sally out of the mound.
- 2:48:52Yogi coming up is batting 280.
- 2:48:56At seven doubles, 13 homers, 41 runs, batted in.
- 2:49:01The bases are loaded, nobody out. The outfield and the infield both being called way in.
- 2:49:07So if Yogi hits a long fly ball, it'll be way over the outfield of his head.
- 2:49:15Jerry Stanley with a short windup.
- 2:49:17Now he doubles on it. This Yogi is a swing and a miss right front.
- 2:49:23He has a good through ball and an equally good knuckle ball.
- 2:49:31The water's brought to come in a relief. Bases loaded, nobody out.
- 2:49:35Facing Yogi Berra.
- 2:49:37Four-tide, five-five in the bottom of the ninth.
- 2:49:41Sally again in the windup. It's the Yogi lower, one-on-one.
- 2:49:58Now Greco is not too far behind second base. One-one pitch. A brown foul outside of first.
- 2:50:12Yogi went after that second. That was dragging Lauren away. One ball, two strikes in there.
- 2:50:38All three runners leading away. Sally into the windup.
- 2:50:43The pitch is hot to the air. The third baseman is getting under it.
- 2:50:47It's foul territory and he's got it for the out. Sally got better.
- 2:50:54Four to a low and breaking pitch and Yogi pops his foul.
- 2:50:58His box serve.
- 2:51:01Serve doubled, struck out twice and single. He scored one.
- 2:51:06The infield remains in and the outfield remains in.
- 2:51:11One away and the bases still loaded.
- 2:51:20Sally into the windup.
- 2:51:23That's a serve. Lower and away, ball one. Taking a chance to scoop that one out of the dirt.
- 2:51:39Again, Sally ready.
- 2:51:42Big swing and a foul, tip back, strike one on the side. Sally is keeping that ball right down around their knees.
- 2:51:50She doesn't want to get anything up. The batter can hit one up in the air a long way.
- 2:52:01One to one serve. Windup. Pitch low and away, ball two, two and one.
- 2:52:21Johnny Blankett is on deck.
- 2:52:25Ready to swing a bat for Billy Gardner if he's needed.
- 2:52:29Here's a two one pitch. Low ball three, three and one.
- 2:52:34Now Sally's got to come in here.
- 2:52:37Three and one pitch with one out and the bases loaded.
- 2:52:50Windup by Sally. The pitch. A ground ball to
- 2:53:20the right of the bat.
- 2:53:22The Yankees win the ballgame.
- 2:53:25Roger Maritz scores the third base.
- 2:53:30The Yankees win the ballgame 6-5 on the error by Big McTano.
- 2:53:35Billy picked great ball. He had Yogi pop one up and then serve it and slow ground to the third.
- 2:53:41But the big catch as well gave Big McTano trouble. So that's the first ballgame.
- 2:53:466-5 the totals in the game for the Yankees. Six runs, 11 hits, one error.
- 2:53:54World man left on base for the Kansas City Yankees.
- 2:53:595 on time, 4 on. Six man left on base.
