- 0:04Speaker 1: And we're back to the Craig Way Show.
- 0:07Speaker 2: Have a message for Craig, share it by using the
- 0:09Speaker 2: talkback feature on the Ihearts Radio. WHA.
- 0:17Speaker 3: All right, here we go again the It's the Big
- 0:25Speaker 3: Twelve conference. This was a something that was tweeted out
- 0:28Speaker 3: by a guy who covers BYU for the desertt News,
- 0:31Speaker 3: Jay Drew and said, here's his quote, The Big said that.
- 0:37Speaker 3: Head coach Kalani Sataki says, the Big Twelve is quote
- 0:41Speaker 3: unquote looking into end quote everything that happened last Saturday
- 0:46Speaker 3: against Arizona State, including the video that has been leaked
- 0:50Speaker 3: from BYU's locker room in halftime. So what was in
- 0:56Speaker 3: the video? Yeah, I mean like halftime instructions maybe or something.
- 1:01Speaker 3: The uh yeah.
- 1:05Speaker 2: Now if it's leaked, like is he talking about like
- 1:07Speaker 2: an aired on ESPN, Because even if it's leaked.
- 1:11Speaker 3: Like no, no, no, like that. What I drew from this
- 1:15Speaker 3: is what he's saying is that there was video from
- 1:18Speaker 3: some halftime instructions going on in the BYU locker room
- 1:21Speaker 3: that then got passed into the Arizona State locker room.
- 1:24Speaker 3: That's gonna be a pretty quick turnaround. I know. If
- 1:27Speaker 3: that's the case, I don't know. A lot of people
- 1:30Speaker 3: are saying it's the audio from BYU locker room. Yeah, yeah,
- 1:33Speaker 3: a lot of people saying it's a mess. Somebody else
- 1:37Speaker 3: tweeted out and said that the Big twelve is the
- 1:40Speaker 3: spirit airlines of conferences.
- 1:43Speaker 2: So okay, so BYU camptain Tyler Batty, Yeah, gave a
- 1:47Speaker 2: speech in the locker room at halftime. That audio was
- 1:51Speaker 2: leaked on social media. So they're trying to figure out
- 1:54Speaker 2: basic they get out who leaked Okay, So all right, okay, yeah,
- 1:58Speaker 2: so it's not I guess it wasn't like he was
- 2:00Speaker 2: given the Arizona state. I mean, yeah, what's the let's
- 2:02Speaker 2: see what the really the huge deal is unless you know,
- 2:06Speaker 2: it's just probably some ga or something like that recording
- 2:09Speaker 2: on his phone, you know, and send it to a
- 2:11Speaker 2: buddy who of course probably runs the barstool account for
- 2:14Speaker 2: BYU and then they post it, you know. So no,
- 2:17Speaker 2: I don't see anything here. Also, it's a big total
- 2:21Speaker 2: investigating it. Yeah, who knows what you're gonna get from that?
- 2:23Speaker 2: Satacky right?
- 2:24Speaker 3: Our friend Anwir Richardson from Orange Bloods as a photo
- 2:28Speaker 3: of es Chaytan Blue. Did you see Jay when he
- 2:31Speaker 3: was holding the football during his media session, so he's
- 2:34Speaker 3: keeping it high. Head coach Steve Sarkisan tried to knock
- 2:37Speaker 3: it out a few minutes ago when Blue held on.
- 2:40Speaker 3: So there's that, and and sark was asked about that,
- 2:45Speaker 3: you know, so let's hear some more from the Longworts
- 2:50Speaker 3: head coach from Steve Sarkisian his his uh from the
- 2:55Speaker 3: weekly news conference and move forward on it. He was
- 3:03Speaker 3: asked about how often does he go to a high
- 3:07Speaker 3: school football game and then see somebody else? He did,
- 3:11Speaker 3: He wasn't really intending to watch, but that guy ended
- 3:16Speaker 3: up impressing him more.
- 3:17Speaker 4: Pretty often, quite frankly, Yeah, you go to high school
- 3:20Speaker 4: games and you're there to see, like I said, a
- 3:23Speaker 4: particular player. A lot of times a player on the
- 3:26Speaker 4: opposing team or two players on the opposing team can
- 3:29Speaker 4: get your attention. For a younger player on the team
- 3:32Speaker 4: of the player that you're looking at gets your attention.
- 3:35Speaker 4: But very rarely do you go to a game just
- 3:37Speaker 4: to see one player. There's always I always got a
- 3:40Speaker 4: little bit of a list of targets to look at
- 3:43Speaker 4: to get an evaluation on. So but it's it's pretty
- 3:47Speaker 4: fairly common that you find more than just the one
- 3:49Speaker 4: guy that you're there to see.
- 3:50Speaker 3: All right. He was also asked about how long did
- 3:53Speaker 3: it take him to appreciate what this rival was, given
- 3:56Speaker 3: the fact that when he came in, they weren't playing
- 3:59Speaker 3: each other, and then, of course it became obvious when
- 4:01Speaker 3: they learned that later that some of they'd be back
- 4:03Speaker 3: in the same conference. So how long did it take
- 4:05Speaker 3: him to have a better understanding of what this rivalry
- 4:08Speaker 3: has been and what it continues to be all about?
- 4:11Speaker 3: Not long?
- 4:12Speaker 1: Not long.
- 4:12Speaker 4: Didn't take long, you know, But you got to remember,
- 4:15Speaker 4: as a kid growing up, I watched this game on Thanksgiving.
- 4:18Speaker 4: I mean it was like, that's that's how I fell
- 4:21Speaker 4: in love with Texas from the very beginning.
- 4:23Speaker 3: You know.
- 4:24Speaker 4: It was the uniforms, the helmets. And then I knew
- 4:26Speaker 4: that the rivalry was what it was, you know, because
- 4:29Speaker 4: what did you do as a kid, You watch football,
- 4:31Speaker 4: you know, and that's and that's that's what I did.
- 4:35Speaker 4: And then getting here and knowing the rivalry and what
- 4:37Speaker 4: it was about it getting presented and some of the
- 4:41Speaker 4: really cool recruiting battles we've been in with them, and
- 4:43Speaker 4: you win some, you lose some, and so we know
- 4:45Speaker 4: a lot of their players pretty well. They know a
- 4:47Speaker 4: lot of our players pretty well that you quickly find
- 4:52Speaker 4: out households are divided and the states divided.
- 4:54Speaker 1: And but that's the fun part.
- 4:56Speaker 4: That's what that's what this last game of the regular
- 4:58Speaker 4: season is supposed to feel like.
- 4:59Speaker 1: And I've been a part.
- 5:01Speaker 4: Of some great ones, and I'm just I'm really grateful
- 5:03Speaker 4: and thankful that this one is revived and humbled and
- 5:06Speaker 4: honored that I get to be part of it. Really,
- 5:08Speaker 4: I've been I've been watching this game since since I
- 5:10Speaker 4: was this big, you know, so it's pretty cool.
- 5:12Speaker 3: All right. Then he was asked about his players being
- 5:14Speaker 3: obsessed with the details of winning and how they get
- 5:17Speaker 3: one another involved in that.
- 5:19Speaker 4: You know, the one thing that I feel like our
- 5:22Speaker 4: players an example of it would be we do a
- 5:25Speaker 4: situational Masters meeting every Friday morning for twenty minutes, and
- 5:30Speaker 4: it's it's really living examples of a lot of the
- 5:34Speaker 4: things that we worked on in training camp and in
- 5:37Speaker 4: the summer of small details, two minute drills on side kicks,
- 5:42Speaker 4: hail Mary's, you know, all the little stuff that sometimes
- 5:45Speaker 4: players can take for granted.
- 5:47Speaker 1: Of you know, why don't We're gonna.
- 5:50Speaker 4: Work on this again. You know, why is the running
- 5:52Speaker 4: back have to run and fall down before he scores
- 5:54Speaker 4: a touchdown?
- 5:54Speaker 1: Like? Why do we call that?
- 5:55Speaker 3: No? Moss?
- 5:56Speaker 1: Like what?
- 5:57Speaker 4: And then as the season goes, I start showing exams
- 6:00Speaker 4: samples of why it's supportant why it's support, and why
- 6:02Speaker 4: it's important. What I love what I see now is
- 6:06Speaker 4: our players are talking about that stuff and they'll they'll
- 6:09Speaker 4: come to me, coach, did you see that playing the
- 6:11Speaker 4: game last night? We got to show that in Situational
- 6:13Speaker 4: Masters meeting. So the buy into raising the football IQ
- 6:18Speaker 4: and the little things that matter to winning and losing,
- 6:22Speaker 4: to me is where I notice it. You know, things
- 6:25Speaker 4: have definitely come up in game, and off the top
- 6:27Speaker 4: of my head, I can't I can't think of all
- 6:29Speaker 4: of those those those little things. But what I do
- 6:32Speaker 4: know is we're talking about football, and we're talking about
- 6:35Speaker 4: not just the guy making the one hand and catch
- 6:37Speaker 4: last night, but hey, did you see them you know,
- 6:40Speaker 4: screw the clock up at the end of the game
- 6:42Speaker 4: and they didn't get the field goal off and what
- 6:44Speaker 4: could they have done different? So that's the conversations that
- 6:48Speaker 4: I like hearing. That tell me we've got a team
- 6:50Speaker 4: that's thinking about winning and they're trying to figure out
- 6:53Speaker 4: the best ways to put themselves in position to win.
- 6:56Speaker 3: All right. Next, I was asked about Jane Blue about
- 7:00Speaker 3: the thing about the fumble, and uh, you know, and
- 7:04Speaker 3: that's and and uh we were just talking about them.
- 7:07Speaker 3: He was holding the football out in that And then
- 7:13Speaker 3: you'll hear uh Sark asked about this. You know, how
- 7:16Speaker 3: do you deal with the physical side of the running
- 7:20Speaker 3: style of Jayden Blue versus the mental side with the fumbles.
- 7:24Speaker 4: Well, I think it's there's muscle memory and repetition there,
- 7:28Speaker 4: and I think it's okay, why did the fumbles occur?
- 7:32Speaker 3: You know what?
- 7:32Speaker 1: What what happened?
- 7:33Speaker 4: From a technical standpoint, How can we fix that? And
- 7:37Speaker 4: then how do we emphasize that moving forward throughout the
- 7:40Speaker 4: week and work on a few things and then through success. Right,
- 7:43Speaker 4: It's like anything anybody who's struggling a batter in baseball,
- 7:47Speaker 4: a pitcher in baseball, a three point shooter.
- 7:50Speaker 1: We've talked all about that kind of stuff.
- 7:51Speaker 4: It's the physical ability is there, the confidence to execute
- 7:56Speaker 4: it is what our jobs as coaches is to make
- 7:59Speaker 4: sure that they're in the right frame of mind to
- 8:00Speaker 4: get that done. And so but that's why they calls
- 8:03Speaker 4: coach right, and that that's our job to get that done.
- 8:05Speaker 3: Now. Somebody when I was tweeting out these quotes and
- 8:09Speaker 3: I tweeted out that quote a Twitter guy, guy on
- 8:16Speaker 3: the next name is his Twitter handle? Is that spilled whiskey?
- 8:21Speaker 3: But he says, good answer from Sart, But at some
- 8:23Speaker 3: point it is what it is. I love the vision
- 8:25Speaker 3: and hard running a blue, but he can't be trusted
- 8:27Speaker 3: any longer in critical situations. The ball is too precious
- 8:29Speaker 3: to keep letting it go as he does. I hear
- 8:32Speaker 3: what you're saying, Cuter. I appreciate your appreciate your perspective,
- 8:36Speaker 3: but you don't make that call. The coach does, and
- 8:37Speaker 3: the coach thinks he's going to be okay. So I
- 8:40Speaker 3: guess we're all just, you know, we're going to listen
- 8:43Speaker 3: to what the coach says of it. He's he believes
- 8:45Speaker 3: and Jade and Blue has done an awful lot for
- 8:47Speaker 3: this football team. But he has lost some fumbles. And
- 8:50Speaker 3: I agree with you, Couter, I understand where you are
- 8:53Speaker 3: in terms of the dangerous nature of what can happen.
- 8:57Speaker 3: Sart appreciates it every bit as much all of us,
- 9:00Speaker 3: if not more so. But he believes in Blue and
- 9:04Speaker 3: he believes that Jay and Blue can get it done
- 9:05Speaker 3: without fumbling. We'll see, you know, But that's that's going
- 9:09Speaker 3: to be his decision to make those kind of calls
- 9:11Speaker 3: on that. Another thing, what does it mean to be
- 9:13Speaker 3: in the same company of dk R mac Brown's Our
- 9:16Speaker 3: friend Brian Davis asked this question back to back ten
- 9:20Speaker 3: win seasons. Mac had nine consecutive seasons of ten and
- 9:24Speaker 3: more wins, ten straight of nine or more wins, and
- 9:26Speaker 3: nine straight of ten and more wins. They included eight
- 9:30Speaker 3: and nine. The only other coach to do it, Dearrel Royal,
- 9:33Speaker 3: had the back to back ten win seasons in sixty
- 9:36Speaker 3: nine and seventy, and he was asked if he knew
- 9:40Speaker 3: that and what the importance of that is.
- 9:42Speaker 1: I mean, I don't think.
- 9:43Speaker 4: In my opening press conference, I said, hey, I want
- 9:46Speaker 4: to I came to the University of Texas to win
- 9:48Speaker 4: ten games, you know.
- 9:49Speaker 1: We came here to win championships, you know, And that's that's.
- 9:52Speaker 4: Been our goal. That's been the standard, and that's what
- 9:55Speaker 4: we keep striving for. And that's the end result, right
- 9:58Speaker 4: and so we always put that the end and then
- 10:01Speaker 4: are we doing championship work every day?
- 10:04Speaker 3: Right?
- 10:04Speaker 4: Are we championship coaches? Do we have championship schemes? Do
- 10:08Speaker 4: we have a championship weight program? Do we have a
- 10:10Speaker 4: championship nutrition program? Do we have a championship study hall?
- 10:14Speaker 4: Do we have a championship work ethic? Do we have
- 10:16Speaker 4: a championship culture? Do we have a championship locker room?
- 10:19Speaker 1: Right? That's like, yes, that's what we're.
- 10:22Speaker 4: Striving for and we're chasing that every day, but we
- 10:25Speaker 4: got to make sure the way we're chasing it every
- 10:27Speaker 4: day is at a championship level.
- 10:29Speaker 3: Okay, all right? Next, and by the way, when he
- 10:32Speaker 3: started off that answer, they said about DKR winning ten rodigoes.
- 10:37Speaker 3: I didn't think they even played ten games back then.
- 10:41Speaker 3: They actually were. This is really weird. In nineteen sixty
- 10:45Speaker 3: nine they played, if I remember correctly, they played ten
- 10:53Speaker 3: games in the regular season and then won the Cotton Bowl.
- 10:55Speaker 3: They finished eleven to zero. In nineteen seventy they won
- 11:01Speaker 3: ten straight. See, that wouldn't make that wouldn't make it. Right,
- 11:04Speaker 3: there won twenty in a row. I know with James
- 11:07Speaker 3: Street is starting quarterback. So anyway, the point is there
- 11:12Speaker 3: was back to back ten win seasons before they lost
- 11:14Speaker 3: to Notre Dame in the seventy win Cotton Bowl after
- 11:16Speaker 3: they'd already been crowned UPI National champions. On that that
- 11:19Speaker 3: was the back to back national titles and that was
- 11:21Speaker 3: the coaches fault. Okay, ze friend ed Clements asked his question.
- 11:28Speaker 3: He named off a bunch of historical facts about Texas
- 11:32Speaker 3: and Texas A and M. He talked about the Aggie's
- 11:35Speaker 3: eating Bevo by the way, that story, which is true,
- 11:39Speaker 3: but it wasn't them eating Bevo by themselves. Viva was
- 11:43Speaker 3: served as the main course of a dinner between the
- 11:48Speaker 3: two sides. It's like nineteen thirteen, I believe it is.
- 11:51Speaker 3: It wasn't the actual Bevo, right, it was. Yeah, he
- 11:54Speaker 3: was the first one. They just bought him. Well, they'd
- 11:57Speaker 3: had him and they served Yeah he was, he was.
- 12:03Speaker 3: They had a they had a really big cookout afterwards.
- 12:06Speaker 3: It was kind of a team dinner for both sides
- 12:08Speaker 3: to get together. It was the early twentieth century. They
- 12:10Speaker 3: did stuff like that back then. Yeah. Now you do
- 12:12Speaker 3: that and you have pita up your ey. Well, well,
- 12:15Speaker 3: not only that, think about this, think about the sanitation
- 12:19Speaker 3: element of it. I mean, this is right around the
- 12:21Speaker 3: time that Upton Sinclair wrote his you know, his incredible
- 12:26Speaker 3: book The Jungle right about the meat packing industry there.
- 12:30Speaker 3: So yeah, but he mentioned that, and then that also
- 12:33Speaker 3: mentioned things like the Aggi's watering down the field in
- 12:38Speaker 3: sixty three and it was a quagmire. And then there's
- 12:40Speaker 3: the long runs have captured kidnapped reavily before Vivo was
- 12:46Speaker 3: kidnapped again in sixty three, and then they swapped out
- 12:49Speaker 3: and so on and so forth. So he had all
- 12:50Speaker 3: of these things, and on top of it, it was only
- 12:53Speaker 3: ninety ninety five miles away. So how is start planning
- 12:56Speaker 3: to deal with all of that? With the logistics, We'll be.
- 13:00Speaker 4: D I'm gonna leave it at that. We'll be ready. Yeah, no, No,
- 13:07Speaker 4: pretty standard for us. You know, I'm not a big
- 13:08Speaker 4: get out of routine guy. So our normal routine will
- 13:11Speaker 4: be our routine will get in there Friday and we'll
- 13:13Speaker 4: be ready to play Saturday.
- 13:14Speaker 3: Yeah. So there it is all right. And in case
- 13:17Speaker 3: you're wondering, yes, they are busting over. They are staying
- 13:19Speaker 3: at a hotel in College Station, which I don't think
- 13:22Speaker 3: a long team Quarrant team has done since nineteen ninety nine.
- 13:25Speaker 3: That was another thing that Ed pointed out was that
- 13:27Speaker 3: there was no breakfast for them when they got up
- 13:29Speaker 3: the next morning. That was that weird year. That's you know,
- 13:31Speaker 3: the tragedy of the bonfire and all that kind of stuff.
- 13:33Speaker 3: It all happened. Phone calls went to the player's rooms
- 13:36Speaker 3: all night long at the at the fashionable Ramada Inn
- 13:41Speaker 3: on Texas Avenue. I think. But anyway, yeah, they'll be
- 13:46Speaker 3: over there on Friday night and they'll go in. I'll
- 13:48Speaker 3: play on Saturday. He was also asked about having played
- 13:50Speaker 3: in a couple of those Holy Wars BYU against Utah.
- 13:53Speaker 3: One of them was in a blizzard, and how do
- 13:56Speaker 3: you prepare for a game Saturday where the temperatures are
- 13:59Speaker 3: going to be much more palatable.
- 14:01Speaker 1: It's funny.
- 14:01Speaker 4: I was talking to somebody about that this morning, that
- 14:04Speaker 4: second one, oddly enough, and I remember that game vividly,
- 14:07Speaker 4: and we talk about Rogers question about we not me
- 14:12Speaker 4: and playing for the next guy.
- 14:14Speaker 1: In that game, it was a blizzard.
- 14:17Speaker 4: I mean it was as white as you could see
- 14:19Speaker 4: any in any direction. And I was thrown for a
- 14:22Speaker 4: lot of yards that year, and in that game, I
- 14:25Speaker 4: was seven for twelve I think for like eighty yards
- 14:28Speaker 4: and we won thirty something to ten, and I was
- 14:30Speaker 4: probably more happy than anybody because the year before I'd
- 14:33Speaker 4: thrown four interceptions in the Holy Warm and we lost.
- 14:35Speaker 4: And so you know, again, you get in games like this,
- 14:39Speaker 4: what do I need to do to help the team win?
- 14:42Speaker 1: And I think when.
- 14:42Speaker 4: You go in with that mentality, you go in as
- 14:45Speaker 4: a as a group really together, composed and helping one
- 14:48Speaker 4: another and picking each other up, you put yourself in
- 14:51Speaker 4: the best position to perform of whatever task is asked
- 14:54Speaker 4: of you.
- 14:55Speaker 3: Yeah, okay. And then finally he was asked by Marcel
- 14:58Speaker 3: read the Texas A and M quarterback, how he can
- 15:01Speaker 3: cause problems?
- 15:02Speaker 1: Legitimate dual threat quarterback.
- 15:05Speaker 4: You know, they they do a nice job schematically, you know,
- 15:08Speaker 4: call and Cline coming from Kansas State going there now
- 15:11Speaker 4: the very detailed, you know, offensive system. They've got all
- 15:15Speaker 4: the normal run game, They've got all the zone read
- 15:18Speaker 4: run game that we've seen in years past quarterback runs,
- 15:22Speaker 4: they've got the passing game. But this guy is electric
- 15:25Speaker 4: quickness and speed and a real weapon.
- 15:28Speaker 1: I think that's why their red.
- 15:29Speaker 4: Zone numbers are so good, is because when they get
- 15:31Speaker 4: down there, you have to defend him running the ball
- 15:34Speaker 4: as well as throwing the ball. And I think they've
- 15:37Speaker 4: tailored an offense around him to his skill set that
- 15:41Speaker 4: make them and make him in particular, difficult to defend.
- 15:45Speaker 3: Okay, all right, so there you are with that. By
- 15:47Speaker 3: the way, on the x LI and C pal's talking
- 15:50Speaker 3: about Miami, he thinks they're gonna lose again, says their
- 15:52Speaker 3: defense is suspect to be polite. That may be true,
- 15:55Speaker 3: but their offense with cam Ward, one of the best
- 15:58Speaker 3: quarterbacks in the country, is incredibly explosive, and that they
- 16:02Speaker 3: have who I think is the best receiver in the country,
- 16:04Speaker 3: Xavier Estrepo. I think he's the best. So you're gonna
- 16:08Speaker 3: have to outscore him really to beat him. And it
- 16:11Speaker 3: could be done. And we'll see what SMU has for
- 16:13Speaker 3: them if they played him in the ACC Championship. More
- 16:15Speaker 3: coming up here in Sports Radio AM thirteen Under the Zone.
